ADAMS BACK FOR ANOTHER RUN Resorters veteran joins two others in shooting 7-under in qualifying By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com ate Adams of Maple Grove has been playing at the Resorters Tournament in Alexandria since he was 9-years old. He is a three-time junior champion at the tournament and has been a consistent threat in the Men’s Championship Division since taking second in 2018 in a 1-up final against Brian Choe. Now in his 12th year playing the Resorters, Adams does not mince words when talking about what it would mean to him to finish on top of this men’s field. “More than anything in the world,” Adams said. “It chokes me up just talking about this event, just because I’ve been here with my family forever. It’s just so much fun. I love it here, and if I could ever have the honor of winning this tournament, my golf career would be complete.” Adams positioned himself to make another run at it this week as he heads into match play on Wednesday afternoon as the No. 1 seed. Gunnar Broin, a native of Chanhassen, and Gavin Cronkhite of Lakeville joined Adams in shooting 7-under through the two rounds of qualifying. Adams won a scorecard playoff between the three to earn the top seed. Braeden Sladek, 17, of Alexandria took the second seed as the defending

N

champion. Broin is the third seed, and Cronkhite is seeded fourth. A total of 11 players finished at under par through the two days. Lincoln Johnson, a University of Minnesota golfer and Resorters regular looking for his first Men’s Champ title, shot 5-under. The cut to make the championship flight was a 149. It just so happens that Nicholas Adams, Nate’s brother, won a playoff to grab the 32nd seed. They will play each other in the first round on Wednesday. Nicholas won two straight titles in the Men’s Regular Division before moving up to Men’s Champs this year. Nate Adams and Cronkhite are college teammates. They are part of almost half a dozen men’s golfers from North Dakota State University who are playing in this year’s tournament. Adams, who will play two more seasons at NDSU, has been a catalyst in getting more guys from the Bison to Alexandria each year. “Since I’ve been here for so long, guys have asked me on the team, ‘Do you like playing it? Is it a fun tournament? Should I play?’ It’s an easy, ‘Yes, you gotta play in the Resorters if you’re free.’ It’s so much fun,” Adams said. “Not just the golf, but everything else around it…It’s a serious golf tournament for us because we want to do well, but the fact that it’s such a relaxed vibe out here makes it a lot

Maple Grove native Nate Adams, second from right, shakes hands with Gavin Cronkhite of Lakeville after their Men's Championship Division qualifying round on Aug. 2, 2022. Adams and Cronkhite are college teammates at North Dakota State University, and both finished at 7-under 137 through the two days of qualifying at this year's Resorters. Lincoln Johnson, second from left, shot 5-under. All three figure to be in the mix to make a deep run this week when match play gets going on Wednesday afternoon. easier to play.” Adams shot a 66 during his first round of qualifying before finishing with a 71 on Tuesday. He carded a total of 11 birdies, and said a lot of that had to do with his familiarity at AGC. “If you can get off the tee well here, the course gets real easy just because you have so many shots from 60, 70 yards into these par fours,” Adams

said. “Players like us, we work on those religiously. It’s a very comfortable shot to have. I’ve always been so big on my putting, and the way these greens are, it’s hard to miss these putts. The greens are so true. They roll great, and I’ve been playing on them for so long now.” Cronkhite’s experience at AGC could not be any different

than Adams. Sunday was his first time playing the course, but his first round was a 5-under 67. The junior at NDSU came back with a 70 on Tuesday. He had 10 birdies throughout the two days. Cronkhite said he got some help navigating the course for the first time from Nicholas

Three finish at even par or better Gophers senior shoots 3-under in first time at AGC By Eric Morken Alexandria Echo Press Emma Carpenter had little trouble navigating the Alexandria Golf Club during her first round ever playing the course during the Women’s Division qualifying round on Monday afternoon. Carpenter, a Dekalb, Illinois native who plays in the Big Ten at the University of Minnesota, shot a 3-under par 70. She will take the top seed into match play that starts on Wednesday afternoon at 12:05 from the first tee box. “I was driving the ball well all day,” Carpenter said. “I wasn’t really able to capitalize on it on the back nine, but on the front I was able to hit some better wedges in there and take advantage of some more of those tee balls.” Carpenter started on the back and got her first of five birdies at the parfive 12th. She was steady the rest of the way, parring Nos. 13-16, along with 18, around a bogey at 17. Carpenter is good friends with Resorters regular Lincoln Johnson of Chaska, with Johnson also playing his college golf at the University of Minnesota. He joined up with Carpenter as her caddie near the middle of her round, and she credited him with helping her navigate the course for the first time. Carpenter converted more birdie opportunities

She took advantage of the par fives, birdying three of the four holes. “I shot even on that first nine with a threeputt. That was super disappointing because a lot of times I just had a little wedge into the green and wasn’t able to capitalize,” Carpenter said. “I think I just did a really good job of staying patient. JUNIOR 13-15

Top seeds cruise in opening round By Eric Morken Alexandria Echo Press Matches in the opening round of the Junior 13-15 Division went very much according to plan as far as top seeds moving on to the quarterfinals. Seven of the eight top seeds remain, with 14th-seeded Will Hacker being the lone higher seed to pull off an upset if one wants to call it that. Hacker has shown he can make deep runs in this tournament in years past after winning the Junior 10-12 Division title last summer and finishing second in 2020. Here is a look at how all of Monday’s matches played out before the quarterfinalists take to the 10th tee on Wednesday morning starting at 7:09 a.m.

O’Donnell was able to shave 13 strokes off her qualifying round of 88 last year. A quarter-finalist at last year’s tournament, O’Donnell played solid, consistent golf on Monday, knocking down nothing but pars through the first nine holes. She had to settle for a bogey on No. 10 but rebounded nicely with pars on Nos. 11, 12,

Last year, O’Donnell lost to Sullivan, who is also a multiple champion in the Women’s Division, in a hardfought quarterfinal match, 2-1. Many familiar names are back in the tournament, including last year’s runner-up, Molly Baker, who battled seven-time Resorters champion, Aldrich, through 16 holes before losing 4-2. There will be a new champ in the Women’s Executive Division this year because Aldrich qualified for the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur and will be playing in Alaska during the same week as the

MEN’S EXECS

Geoff Klein keeps knocking on the door Resorters regular positioned well after shooting 6-under Monday By Eric Morken Alexandria Echo Press Geoff Klein of St. Peter has been knocking on the door of capturing a Resorters title in multiple divisions over more than two decades of playing in this tournament. It may be just a matter of time before he breaks through. Klein was on his game during the Men’s Executive qualifying round on Monday morning. He shot a 6-under par 66 to pace the field heading into match play on Wednesday. Brian Hoops was the only other player under par at 1-under. “I think this is my 25th year of playing up here. It’s just a lot of fun. It would be great to win one,” Klein said. “I’ve played well enough up here a couple of times to win one, but you need to get a little bit lucky with who you’re playing and who you run into during those matches. I certainly would love to be going to that champions dinner sometime.” Klein started on the back nine and carded two birdies on 11 and 12 before his only bogey of the day on the par-5 14th. He bounced back nicely with a string of four straight birdies on holes 17, 18, 1 and 2. He added a seventh birdie on hole 4 before collecting pars the rest of the way. “I was able to drive it up by the green on 18, 1 and 2 and pitch it up there and make birdie on those three holes,” Klein said. “I made birdie on 17 too, so I was able to birdie four straight in the middle of my round. I hit a nice drive on 11 and had about 60 yards in. It was pretty much the driver that got me in position. Then the short game and putter were pretty good.” Monday morning featured great scoring conditions with pleasant temperatures and calm winds. “I think in this (qualifying) round, the hole locations are pretty for-

Geoff Klein of St. Peter reads his line before a putt at the Alexandria Golf Club during the finals of the Men's Executive Division during the 2020 Resorters Tournament. Klein finished runner-up that year to now four-time Execs champion, Troy Johnson. Klein shot 6-under during qualifying on Monday to take the top seed into match play for the Men's Executives this week.

Winning this Men’s Executive field means going through some talented players to do so. Troy Johnson of Maple Grove is the front-runner until proven otherwise. He has won four straight Hoops Bloedorn Fischer O’Donnell titles in this division. Johnson shot a 1-over par 73 during this year’s qualifying round. His round was highlighted by birdies on Nos. 5, 11, 14, 17 and 18. Hoops, who is from Tempe, Arizona and plays amateur tournaments Schomer Marlow Olson Crosby nationally and internationally, ran into some trouble on the front, but was 3-under par on the back. He rebounded from a bogey on 10 to birdie 11, 15, 16 and 18 before adding a couple more birdies on Nos. 2 and 6 after Paulsen Noll Kvasager Heimsness making the turn to the front. Daryl Schomer of St. Cloud, a 4-time Men’s Execs champion and two-time runner-up, joined Shay Conder, Johnson, and Joe Sauer in shooting rounds of 73. Johnson Stout Bisson D. Klein Nick Paulsen and Chad giving, otherwise we may today.” Hacker are also top-five The cut to make the top seeds after both shot never get done with all the players,” Klein said. 32 into the championship even par. “Out here if you drive it flight was an 86. I Saice finished there, but Klein said. “Troy has won was just able to wedge Bell took the 32nd seed like 13 MGA titles. Schoit in there pretty good after winning a playoff. mer has won this thing

a bunch of times and finished second a bunch. You need to play really well to win the Execs. The final few matches, you’re going to have to play just as good as you are in the regular division.” Klein almost got a Resorters title in 2020 when he finished second to Johnson by a 1-up final in the Men’s Executive Division championship. Klein, 43, made the championship flight as the fifth seed of the Men’s Championship Division in the 2021 Resorters. Klein likes where his game is at coming into the Resorters. His summer tournament schedule included tying for 25th at the Minnesota Golf Association Amateur Championship July 18-20 at the Olympic Hills Golf Club with rounds of 75, 79 and 76. “I think I’m playing well enough,” Klein said. “You just got to make enough birdies out here, and I’ve been doing that this summer. I should have a pretty good chance.” The Men’s Executive Division will feature tough matches going forward, but that’s what makes it fun. Klein

is ready to see how his game holds up as he tries to be the one to break Johnson’s streak of four straight titles and capture that first Resorters championship. “It’s great having a good field. You want to have competition,” Klein said. “You do this because of the competition, so you want to have a chance to beat some really good guys to win it. That would make it even more satisfying.”

Resorters champ George Cliff named honorary starter Corky Krogstad honorary chairman By Sam Stuve Alexandria Echo Press ALEXANDRIA - Longtime Resorters participant George Cliff is back playing in the Grand Master Division at this year’s tournament, and the 2022 event comes with a special honor for him. Cliff is the honorary starter for this year’s tournament. Corky Krogstad is the honorary chairman. Krogstad is a 50-year member of the Alexandria Golf Club and has played an integral role in the Resorters behind the scenes. Cliff and Krogstad helped kick off the tournament on Tuesday during a ceremony off of the first tee box at 11:30 a.m. Cliff, who lives in Mankato, is a six-time Resorters champion. “It’s an honor,” Cliff said ahead of the tournament of being this year’s starter. “I’ve been going up there for at least 40 years. I think we started to come up with family vacations starting in about 1981. I’ve been there two other times, back in the 70s and in the late 60s.” Cliff has many memories from over the 40 years that he has played in the Resorters. “There’s so many of them,” Cliff said. “It’s unbelievable. The tournament is a time when

has two Resorters titles in this division from 2014 and 2021. Eldred enters match play this week as the No. 2 seed in the division as the defending champion, while Herzog got in as the 15th seed after shooting a 79 in qualifying. Lincoln Johnson shot 5-under through two rounds of qualifying to take the fifth seed into the Men’s Championship matchplay tournament. “I had heard really good things about (the Resorters) from those three people saying it was their favorite week of the summer,” Carpenter said. “They love it so much, and I typically go back to DeKalb for the summer,

you get to know all the players. They become like family. One of my best friends is (Alexandria’s) Dave Harris. I’m not sure how many times we’ve met each other, but we’ve battled lots of times. And there are some other ones in the past that have passed on and aren’t playing anymore. It’s just fun to come back and have some fun.” Cliff keeps coming back because of the fun atmosphere at the tournament. “Besides being up there for a family vacation, we’ve stayed at several resorts over the years,” Cliff said. “When we first started to come up, my kids were three and one. My wife was the best caddy in southern Minnesota. We lost her about 10 years ago this year. Both my sons did play, and after they got old enough, I’d be playing 18 holes and then I would go out and caddy for them at night. It’s some long days but lots of fun.” For Cliff and his family, golfing has been a mainstay throughout the years. “We’re a golfing family,” Cliff said. “I’ve been lucky enough to play reasonably well. I got to go to the section qualifier in Chicago for the 1976 Open Championship. One of my best buddies, who doesn’t play anymore, and I won the state-am in the state four-ball in 1976 at the Minneapolis Golf Club. I’ve been in a lot of tournaments over the years. Back in the old days, we

played in a lot of MGA championships.” Since 1984, Cliff has been an outstate director of the MGA and, at one time, was a section affairs committee person for the United States Golf Association. There are 10 divisions for this year’s Resorters Tournament — the Men’s Championship, Women’s Championship, Men’s Regular Flights, Men’s Executive (35+), Women’s Executive (35+), Men’s Senior (50+), Men’s Masters (65+), Men’s Grand Masters (75+), Junior 10-12 and Junior 13-15. Through the Resorters, Krogstad and Cliff have become friends. “I talk to George every year,” Krogstad said. “He’s become a great friend, he’s a great supporter (of the tournament) and he’s a great champion.” Krogstad, who lives in Alexandria, has been involved with the Resorters for decades. His work in helping the tournament run smoothly made him a natural fit as this year’s honorary chairman of the 101st Resorters Tournament. “I just feel honored,” Krogstad said. “The Resorters is a great family experience. It’s a very competitive, yet fun atmosphere. I started out as a caddy master, then moved into scoring and pairings when the carts came in.” Krogstad now helps

but this is my first summer staying up north. It worked out really well to go ahead and register for this event and spend the week up here with so many great people.” Carpenter adds to a talented women’s field at this year’s tournament. Detroit Lakes native Madison Herzog is playing well and searching for her first Resorters title after taking second in 2019 and 2021. Madison is the third seed after shooting a 2-under par 71 during qualifying. She had just one bogey and added birdies at Nos. 3, 6 and 11 around 14 pars on Monday. The cut to make the championship flight was an 80. Alexandria native Amanda Bigger carded that to earn the 16th seed

and the right to face Carpenter in the first round. Alexandria’s Lauren Stockmoe shot an evenpar 73 during qualifying to earn the fourth seed. Leah Skaar, a junior this coming year at North Dakota State University, shot 74 to round out the top five seeds. Carpenter has a better feel of the course now after playing it once as she heads into match play. She is ready to enjoy the week and see how far she can advance. “There’s no doubt that this field is really good this week,” Carpenter said. “It’s just going to be about me and the golf course, not necessarily about me and another player. I’m just going to enjoy the good company. All of these girls are great girls. I’m going to play

Harris, Elton and Syverson are Resorters honorees from prior years. Rothfusz is the daughter of Gordy Anderson, who played in the Resorters Tournament for over 25 years, was an honorary chairman in 2019 and was the honorary centenarian starter during the 100th Resorters in 2021. He passed away on July 3, 2022, and was honored with a plaque, his signature cart, along with photos and signs on Aug. 2, 2022 at the 101st Resorters Tournament. with the tournament’s time management and with the pace of play. Krogstad said he’s seen the growth of the tournament that necessitated there being 10 divisions, as well as the passion the area has for the tournament. Krogstad has played in the Resorters twice himself when he’s been asked to fill in. One of Krogstad’s favorite things about the Resorters is the people

who play in it and the people that work at it. “It’s become a real family,” Krogstad said. “And we have people that are from three generations playing right now. There’s nothing more gratifying to see grandpa carrying the clubs of his 10-year-old grandchild.” At the ceremony on Tuesday, the late Gordy Anderson was also honored. Anderson played in

the Resorters for over 25 years and was an honorary chairman in 2019. Anderson passed away on July 3, 2022. Choe fends off Swedberg, others in Resorters Pro-Am By Eric Morken Alexandria Echo Press ALEXANDRIA — Brian Choe of Coppell, Texas has been a regular in the Men’s Championship Division at the Resorters Tournament in recent years. Choe won the 2018 title by a 1-up score over Nate Adams of Maple Grove during his college playing days. Now after dropping his amateur status after playing this past school year as a senior at Abilene Christian University, Choe can add a win in the annual Resorters Pro-Am to his resume in Alexandria. Choe was the low gross in the Pro Division among 18 golfers on Saturday at the Alexandria Golf Club. He shot a 5-under 67. He almost went even lower, but his only bogeys of the day came on two of his final three holes on Nos. 1 and 3 at AGC. Choe had a birdie in between there on No. 2, and added birdies on Nos.

5, 7, 10, 12, 13 and 15. He was 4-under on the back nine. That helped him hold off a field of three other pros who shot 4-under. Brady Swedberg, the tournament director at Geneva Golf Club in Alexandria, joined Thomas Campbell and Eric Chiles, both pros from the Twin Cities area, in shooting rounds of 68 during hot and windy conditions to start this year’s Resorters week. “It was a little bit tough out there with the wind,” Swedberg said. “The course was in perfect shape. The greens were great, so you felt like if you gave yourself some looks, you’re bound to make some.” Swedberg said his driver was just a bit off, which was making it harder to get the consistent looks at birdie that he was hoping for. “As many times as I have played out here, you feel like you should go around the course and

make more than four birdies, so a little frustrated,” Swedberg said. “I had a few at the end that felt like they could have gone in and they didn’t. That’s just the way it is. So a little disappointed, but at the end of the day, to shoot four under with no bogeys is OK.” Swedberg, who coached the Alexandria Area High School boys golf team to a third-place finish at the Class AAA state tournament this past spring, was three-under on the back with birdies at Nos. 12, 13 and 15. He added another birdie on the par-five sixth hole. “I could say it’s just another pro-am, but it’s always a little extra fuel,” Swedberg said of playing this event in his hometown. “I don’t even know how many rounds of golf I’ve played out here. A thousand, probably. I don’t even know, but it’s a lot. Growing up here and playing over 100 rounds a summer, so it’s pretty special out here

with the Resorters and all the memories out here. It is extra motivation to try to come out and win this golf tournament.” Swedberg won the Resorters Pro-Am in 2015. His second-place finish on Saturday was a continuation of some good golf that he has been playing after also winning a pro-am in Willmar earlier this summer. Alexandria’s Grant Hanson, who shot a 1-under 71 to tie for fifth on Saturday, has also been playing near the top of many of these oneday pro-ams around the state. Hanson is the director of golf at Geneva Golf Club. “It’s been a little up and down, but overall it’s been pretty good,” Swedberg said. “I played the Minnesota Open. I played OK there, made the cut, and then I’ve played seven or eight of these one-day pro-ams. I’m playing a little better than I played last year, and Grant has been playing
