MEN’S MASTERS

A major shake up

2 upsets, tight matches highlight Men’s Masters

ALEXANDRIA

The Resorters Men’s Masters Championship had two big upsets in the first round of match play Wednesday before weather postponed tournament matches for other divisions in the afternoon.

Paul Peterson, the No. 13 seed, knocked off the No 4 seed, Dale Womeldorf, 4-3, who was a trimedalist in qualifying with a 1-over 72. The two others with a 72 both rolled on – Mark Pokorney and Larry Novotny

The other upset was Peter Ancona, the 12th seed, defeating the fifth seed, Norty Blanchard, 1-up

The eight winners from Wednesday’s matches are scheduled to play on Thursday at times that

are yet to be determined.

Here’s a look back at Wednesday’s matches:

Pokorney def. Siddy, 6-4

Pokorney, a 1980 graduate of St. Thomas, playing in his 11th Resorters, drilled six birdies during Monday’s qualifying round. On Wednesday, he ran into some trouble in the early going against Steve Siddy, but settled down in the back nine to win.

Both golfers bogeyed No 1, and Pokorney’s double-bogey on No 2 gave Siddy the lead. After they bogeyed the next hole, Siddy’s bogey on No. 4 deadlocked the match.

Pokorney’s birdie on No 5 gave him his first lead and swung the momentum his way

Pokorney won Nos. 6 and 7 and put him 3-up. After swapping pars on No 8,

Inclement weather halts Wednesday round

Play resumes on Thursday at 6:30 a.m.

Mother nature made a big impact on Wednesday’s rounds at the 103rd Resorters Tournament at the Alexandria Golf Club

Dangerous, wind, lightning, and thunder caused play to be stopped at 1:25 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31.

Golfers waited at the course in hopes of a break in the weather to resume play, but Mother Nature didn’t cooperate, and play didn’t resume on Wednesday.

One area of the course that was hit hard was behind the 7th green and by the 8th tee box. A tree was knocked.

The Alexandria Golf Club is now focused on having the course ready for play on Thursday.

The Men’s Senior, Men’s Masters, and the Men’s Grand Masters

were the only divisions that completed play on Wednesday The Women’s Championship, Women’s Executive, Junior 13-15, Men’s Regular, and Men’s Championship began play on Wednesday but had to leave the course when the siren sounded.

The Men’s Executive division didn’t get to tee off on Wednesday, and the Junior 10-12 division had a scheduled day off.

Play will resume for all divisions on Thursday at 6:30 a.m. Golfers who began their round on Wednesday will pick up where they left off

Then, groups who didn’t tee off on Wednesday will begin teeing off at 6:40 a.m.

The Junior 10-12 division was scheduled to play on Thursday night, but that round has been postponed to Friday morning. Besides that,

MEN’S SENIOR

Top seeds tumble

Men’s senior division produces early fireworks

Not many divisions got halfway through their round, let alone finished their round on Wednesday at the Alexandria Golf Club, due to inclement weather in the afternoon.

But one division that did complete play was the Men’s Senior division.

The Men’s Senior division at the 103rd Resorters Tournament was full of surprises on Wednesday as four out of the top-six seeds were knocked off.

This includes the No 1, No. 2, and No. 3 seeds.

Heimsness def. Haugen, 3-1

Eric Heimsness pulled off a big upset early in the day by taking down the No 1 seed Chris Haugen. Heimsness, the No. 16 seed jumped out to a 2-up lead through three holes with pars on holes 2 and 3 (both par 4’s).

Haugen responded by winning holes 4 through 6 to take a 1-up lead. Haugen birdied the fourth hole (par 4) and the sixth hole (par 5).

Heimsness pared the seventh hole to tie the match.

Heimsness won hole 11 with a par, hole 12 with a birdie, and hole 17 with a birdie to win the match 3-up

McLeod def. Peterson, 4-3

No 25 seed Brant McLeod made the turn to the back nine well against the No. 24 seed Corey Peterson on Tuesday. McLeod led 1-up after eight holes but won

holes 9 through 13 to lead 5-up.

Peterson won hole 14, but McLeod’s lead proved to be too big as he defeated Peterson 4-3.

Ystebo def. Johnson, 6-5

Daniel Ystebo is the highest seed remaining in the bracket after a strong 6-5 win over the No. 20 seed Chad Johnson on Tuesday.

Ystebo, who is the No 4 seed, started his round with a birdie on the first hole (a par 4) and went on to win the first four holes. He then won the sixth hole (a par 5) with a birdie. Johnson won the eighth hole with a birdie but Ystebo won the ninth hole with a par.

Ystebo won the 10th hole (par 4) with a birdie and went on to win 6-5.

Schultz def. Ramberg, 3-2

The No. 5 seed Cory Schultz held a slim 1-up lead through 12 holes, but with birdies, he sealed a 3-2 win over the No. 12 seed Chris Ramberg. Schultz birdies the 12th hole (par 3) and the 15th hole (par 4).

Earlier in the match, Schultz won holes 2, 4, 9

and 10.

Ramberg won holes 6, 7, and 11.

Larson def. Freeman, 3-2

The reigning champion, Jon Freeman, led 3-up through four holes against the No. 15 seed Mike Larson on Wednesday morning, but Larson didn’t back down from the daunting challenge of facing the reigning champion.

Larson cut his deficit to just one hole with wins on holes five and six.

After turning to the back nine, Larson took control of the match, winning holes 10 through 14. He birdied the par 4 10th hole and the par 5 12th hole Freeman, the No. 2 seed, won the 15th hole, but Larson went on to win 3-2.

Whitbeck def. Lindberg, 1-up

The match between the No. 10 seed Joe Whitbeck, and the No 7 seed Mark Lindberg went down to the wire as they were tied heading to the 18th hole

With a birdie on the par 4 18th, Whitbeck won

the match 1-up. Whitbeck also birdied the first and second hole. He won holes 12 and 15 earlier in the match.

Lindberg won holes 3, 7, 9 and 16.

Berg def. Howard, 2-1

The No. 19 seed, Steve Berg, held off a bit of a rally by the No. 3 seed Curtis Howard to win 2-1

in Wednesday’s match play round.

Berg led 4-up heading to the back nine, but Howard cut his deficit in half with wins on holes 10 and 11. Berg and Howard traded wins on holes 14 and 15, and Berg held on to win 2-1.

Berg won the first, sixth, and eighth hole with a birdie, and the

second hole with a par. Lehman def. Hjortness, 4-3

The No 22 seed, Jim Lehman, defeated the No. 6 seed, Eric Hjortness, by a 4-3 final on Wednesday morning. The official scorecard is not yet available.

5-under par

Black began his medalist round with three pars, had a rare miscue on No. 4, and settled for a bogey He parred No. 5 and got to even-par with a birdie on No 6.

From there, he stepped up his game, knocking down a par on the No. 7 Minnesota Green and followed that up with three straight birdies to go 3-under par.

Black made par on No 11 and sank another birdie, his fifth of the day, on the par-five No 12 to go 4-under. On No. 13, he ran into bogey trouble, but it was his last flub of the round. He made par on the next five holes for a 68 round – one stroke ahead of Matt Norgaard’s 69.

Other golfers who shot par or better in the Men’s Executive Division were Shay Conder with 70, followed by a trio of golfers

with 71 – Daryl Schomer of St. Cloud, Troy Johnson of Maple Grove, and Joe Sauer of St. Cloud. All those golfers are very familiar names in the division. Johnson won the division five times in a row, from 20182022. Schomer also has taken home the trophy five times (2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017).

Sauer qualified for the division last year and was seeded sixth. He breezed through his first match, 6-5, but lost to the 22nd seed, Cory Schultz, 1-up. Sauer made it to the final four in 2022.

Don’t forget about Dave Christensen of Elk River. As the defending Men’s Executive champion, he automatically received the No 2 seed. Last year, Christensen made a triumphant return to the Resorters – the last time he competed in it was 1998 – and defeated Schomer 2-1 in the final.

Other notables who

made the cut with qualifying rounds of 80 or better include two former runners-up in the division, Dan Johnson (2019) and Chad Hacker (2022). Johnson shot a qualifying round of 72 while Hacker carded a 78.

Three golfers tied with rounds of 80, which forced a playoff to determine the final two spots Chad Saice and Jonathan Rentz made the championship bracket, while Paul Martinson will be playing in the flights

The 80-cut mark was the same as the 2023 Resorters.
