Another year, another big 昀椀eld

ALEXANDRIA

It's that time of the year again. Hundreds of golfers are set to flock to Alexandria on July 28-Aug. 3 for the 103rd Resorters Tournament.

Many of the later matches of the tournament went down to the wire, creating a unique atmosphere at the Alexandria Golf Club.

And this year, as always, the goal is to recreate that atmosphere and build upon the success of the last tournament.

With a talented and deep field, the 2024 Resorters Tournament seems destined to be another great one.

2024 Resorters Tournament aims to build off thrilling 2023 tournament

Tournament features many returning champions. This includes Jacques Wilson, the winner of the Men's division in 2014 and 2023.

"It's always the goal to keep the tournament going in the right direction and to keep that

atmosphere going," Kyle Lee of the Alexandria Golf Club said. This year's Resorters

Wilson has picked up more titles since last August. Wilson won the South Carolina Match Play Tournament in June and shot 8-under to lead aU.S. Amateur qualifying event and qualify for the U.S. Amateur Championship, which runs from Aug. 12-18, 2024, in the Twin Cities.

Lee said that when Jerry Rose took over as the chairman of the event, the mission was to draw more of the best amateurs to the event.

The tournament has done just that.

"He (Rose) wanted to bring some of the top talents from around the country here and bring

them to this age-old tournament," Lee said. "Years ago, we transitioned from strictly flights to open up this men's championship division to have a cut that could've gone one of two ways: either people aren't going to come, or it's going to take it to the next level. It's working, obviously, because we're getting these kids from colleges to play. Jacques graduated college quite a bit ago and has been on many tours. He's back playing in the amateur ranks and is succeeding. Another guy, Gunnar Broin, who isn't playing this year, played last year and then in this year's U.S. Open. He went from playing at the Alexandria Golf Club to playing in front of millions at the U.S. Open in less than a

Jacques Wilson wins his second Men's title

Wilson outlasts

Lukas Bigger in a playoff

ALEXANDRIA -

Jacques Wilson trailed for a little over half of the Men’s Division Championship match at the 102nd Resorters Tournament at the Alexandria Golf Club against Alexandria native Lukas Bigger on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2023, but made a late push.

Wilson won holes 13 and 15 to tie the match, and eventually, the match needed an extra hole (the 1st hole) to decide a winner.

Both golfers drove their tee shot near the green, but it was Wilson who sank a birdie putt to win his second Men’s Division title.

“It feels really good, I really relied on my 2014 win to calm my nerves out there,” Wilson said. “Nine years is a long time, so I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous. Coming up on the 18th hole, I was a little squirrely. But to sink that final putt dead center felt really good.”

On the playoff hole, Wilson, the No. 9 seed in the bracket, drove his tee shot just short of and to the right of the No. 1 green and pitched his next shot to the center of the green to give himself a makeable birdie putt.

“I just played it two cups out to the right and hit it firm up the hill,” Wilson said about the

title-sealing putt.

On the 18th hole, Wilson drove his tee shot right of the fairway, while Bigger drove his shot just short of the green. Both golfers scored a par (4) on that hole to set up the playoff hole.

Wilson also birdied the first hole to begin the championship round as well.

Bigger took control of the match on holes 2 and 3 with back-to-back birdies and then won hole 4 with a par.

“I was hitting it good to start the day, and getting up on Jacques 2-up was a pretty good thing,” Bigger said. “It helped calm the mood down.”

Wilson later won hole 7 with a birdie, while Bigger won hole 10 with a birdie.

Wilson then won holes 13 and 15 to tie the match.

“I got a pretty good par there on 13 and 15 as well,” Wilson said. “If you get out of position out here, it’s easy to make bogeys. So you have to hit a lot of greens.”

Wilson played high school golf at Minnetonka and college golf at Kansas University and Charleston Southern University. Wilson turned professional for a bit but was able to regain his amateur status to play in top amateur golf tournaments such as the Resorters Tournament.

Bigger, a Minnesota State-Mankato alum, has played in 13 Resorters Tournaments and had a strong hometown following throughout the week.

“It was amazing, honestly,” Bigger said. “I had never made it to the

championship Saturday afternoon before, but there were a lot of my friends and family around, so it was really fun. A lot of people came out here.”

To get to the finals match, Wilson defeated the No. 12 seed, Ryan Conn, 3-2, while Bigger defeated the No. 3 seed Nate Adams, 1-up.

In the qualifying rounds, Wilson shot 3-under par (142) and earned the No. 9 seed in the match play bracket.

Bigger meanwhile shot 4-under par (141) to earn the No. 7 seed.

Josh Galvin was the medalist in the division with a two-day total of 14-under par (131).

Wilson began the match play bracket on Wednesday, Aug. 2, with a 7-5 win over the No. 24 seed Mack Farley and then beat the No. 25 seed Spencer Hutton, 8-6, on Thursday to get to the quarterfinals.

Wilson then took down the No. 1 seed Galvin in the semifinals on Friday,

Aug. 4, 2023, 3-2, to get the final day of the tournament.

“I really putted the ball well all week,” Wilson said. “I kept talking to my caddy, Woody, and we kept saying, ‘We need to keep making putts and keep giving ourselves good opportunities.’’’

Bigger defeated the No. 26 seed, Lucas Feterl, 3-2, to start the tournament, then took down the No. 10 seed Nick Jarrett, 2-up, to advance to the quarterfinals.

Bigger then defeated the No. 31 seed, Will Harris, 1-up in the quarterfinals.

“I think I hit the ball pretty well,” Bigger said. “My short game was relatively good. I didn’t play the prettiest golf, but I just kind of scrapped around and got it in the hole.”

Through the Resorters and a mutual friend, Bigger, and Wilson have gotten to know each other pretty well.

WOMEN'S CHAMP

Hicks wins Women's title in 昀椀rst Resorters debut

NDSU

golfer beats out a tough field

ALEXANDRIA - Madi

Hicks had quite the freshman season for the North Dakota State women’s golf program in the 2022-23 school year.

She finished as the Summit League Newcomer of the Year for the 2022-23 season with the second-best stroke average on her team (75.66).

She continued to build her resume, with a Women's Division Resorters Tournament title in what was her first-ever Resorters Tournament appearance.

She defeated an old NDSU teammate, Madison Herzog, 5-3, in the Women’s Division championship match on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2023, at the 102nd Resorters Tournament.

“This feels really awesome,” Hicks said after her title win. “This is my first year playing in the tournament. It’s been a fun and amazing tournament to be a part of. And to win it is awesome.”

Hicks, who went to high school at Chanhassen, lost the first hole to Herzog but won holes 4, 5, 6, and 8 and led 2-up after the front nine.

She later won holes 11 and 12 to seal the win.

“I just stayed patient,” Hicks said. “In the second round (of the day), I got down, but I stayed with my game, and it ended up being enough.”

Hicks had to win some tough matches to get to the finals, including a semifinal match against Alexandria alum and future Montana State Bobcat Hannah Boraas, who was the No. 2 seed in the bracket.

This tournament field was loaded with college golfers, including four NDSU golfers.

Along with Hicks, Larson, and Skaar, NDSU’s Caroline Monty was also in this tournament field.

Larson, an Alexandria alum, is a sophomore in college and made it to the semifinals of this Resorters Tournament before falling to Herzog.

Monty just completed her senior year at NDSU and is from Stillwater. Monty was the No. 5 seed in the tournament and was eliminated from the tournament by Larson in the quarterfinals.

fun. Obviously, it’s tough running into your teammate during match play because you both want to win, but also both want each other to win. So it’s tough, but it’s been an awesome week being together.”

Mckenzee Sullivan, a 17-year-old from Florida, finished as the medalist for this division, as she led the qualifying round at even par (73) on July 31, 2023.

Mackayla Olsen, as the No. 16 seed, upset Sullivan, In 19 holes on Aug. 2, 2023, but was eliminated from the tournament two days later with a 1-up loss to Herzog.

Boraas earned the No. 2 seed by being the automatic qualifier with her 2022 Resorters title win. Larson locked up the No. 4 seed with a qualifying round of 75 (2-over par).

Hicks defeated Boraas, 2-1, in Saturday’s semifinals.

“In that round, I made a lot of putts,” Hicks said. “I made some long ones that don’t necessarily drop in every round you play in. That kind off got me off to a hot start, and I just kind of continued things from there.”

In the quarterfinals on Aug. 4, 2023, Hicks beat the No. 14 seed, MacKenzie Olsen, 1-up. This was one of three matches that were decided 1-up, and the fourth, Boraas’ match against the No. 6 seed Leah Skaar, was decided by extra holes.

“I thought this field was amazing,” Hicks said. “There was so much good golf being played in the qualifying

“Obviously, it’s been so fun,” Hicks said about competing with her teammates at the tournament. “They’ve played in this tournament for years, and they encouraged me to come up and play in it. It sounded awesome. And now I see it’s really well run.”

Monty and Herzog faced off in the first round of the tournament in a match that was won in extra holes by Herzog.

“To be up here for a whole week with my teammates is great because we don’t really see each other that much in the summer except for some tournaments," Hicks said. "It was super

Hicks began the tournament with a 4-3 win over the No. 11 seed, Avery O’Donnell, on Aug. 2, 2023.

With this Resorters title to her name, Hicks is now ramping up for her sophomore season of college.

And the number one thing she’s trying to address before the start of the next season is consistency.

“I’ve had some less working on my game and making sure that I’m in good shape before the school year,” Hicks said. “I’m working on consistency, keeping it in play, and not having too many wayward shots.”

MEN'S SENIOR

Inspired by his father, Freeman wins Men’s Senior

Freeman wins his second trophy at the Resorters

ALEXANDRIA – Former Alexandrian Jon Freeman capped off his red-hot run in the Resorters Men’s Senior Division with another solid round to defeat Daniel Ystebo, 2-1, in the finals on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2023, at the Alexandria Golf Club.

He believes he may have had some help from up above – his late father.

“A couple of the key shots, I actually kind of thought to myself, ‘Hey, Dad, if you’re up there, I could use your help with this one,’” he recalled after his big win. “And I felt his presence all week. Ever since he passed a

few years ago, I’ve been wanting to win one of these in his honor, and it felt like this was going to be the week even before it started.”

His father played a big role in his success on the golf course over the years.

“He taught me everything about golf; I never took lessons,” Freeman said. “He was a great golfer at the time I was a kid, his whole life, so everything I learned about golf was from him…

He also taught us early on in golf that you’re going to lose a lot more than you win, so you need to learn to be a good loser and a gentleman – those are values he instilled in

me.”

Freeman qualified for the Resorters as the No. 12 seed with a round of 76. He edged Todd Schneiderhan, 1-up, in the opening round. He then upset the No. 5 seed, Chris Haugen, without dropping a single hole. In the quarterfinals, Freeman was 2-under par while defeating Michael Larson, and he followed that up with a 5-4 win over medalist, Mark Aldrich, in the semifinals. He was 5-under par when that match ended.

“It’s an unbelievable week,” Freeman said. “I’ve tried to explain it to people who haven’t been, who don’t know anything about it, but at the end of

the day, you can’t. You have to be here to experience it, and it just keeps getting better and better. And growing up here, it always felt like this was the biggest tournament in the world, and obviously it’s not, but it still means so much, especially to win.”

Freeman now owns two Resorters trophies – the 2023 Men’s Senior and the Men’s Executive title in 2010.

Freeman def. Ystebo, 2-1

Ystebo won the first hole with par, and they halved the next two holes. Freeman notched his first win with a par on No. 4 and took the lead with a birdie on No. 5. Ystebo

fired back with a birdie on No. 6, matched Freeman’s par on No. 7 but yielded No. 8 with a bogey that gave

Freeman the lead. Both golfers settled for bogeys on No. 9.

Christensen makes big splash in return to Resorters

Christensen wins Men's Execs title

ALEXANDRIA - Dave

Christensen of Elk River made the most of his return to the Resorters Tournament.

In his first time playing in the tournament since 1998, Christensen fended off 4-time Men’s Executive champion Daryl Schomer of St. Cloud, 2-1, to take home the Men’s Executive Division Championship at the 102nd Resorters Tournament at the Alexandria Golf Club.

“Being a Minnesota kid, this is certainly a tournament that you want to win,” Christensen said. “You want to call yourself a champion, so it's really gratifying to win this. And it was a hard week, and there were a lot of great matches, but it's really nice to come out on top.”

Schomer led 2-up after four holes, but Christensen flipped the script between holes 5 and 13.

In that stretch, Christensen won six holes, while Schomer won just one, and Christensen had a 3-up lead after 13 holes.

Three of the holes Christensen won in that stretch, he won birdies (holes 6, 11, and 13).

Schomer won hole 15 to cut into Christensen’s lead, but Christensen held on to win.

“I hit a pretty good shot on 11 through the trees and made a putt. Match play is just weird, and it comes down to putting,” Christensen said. “Daryl

is such as good competitor, and you feel like he’s never going to give up when you play against him, and he’s never going to just give you a hole. I just kept my head down and tried to make birdies.”

Christensen has found success at the Resorters before.

In 1994, he finished runner-up to Jerry Gruidl in the Men’s Championship.

Christensen was the No. 9 seed in the tournament, while Schomer was the No. 7 seed.

Christensen opened the match play portion of the tournament with a 3-2 win over the No. 25 seed Breton Stout on Aug. 2 and a 3-2 win over the No. 8 seed Andy Petersen on Aug. 3.

From there, Christensen pulled out a close, 2-1 win over the No. 17 seed Daniel Klein in the quarterfinals on Aug. 4, and another 2-1 win to begin the day on Aug. 5 in the semifinals over the No. 5 seed, Bryan Hoops.

Christensen said that consistency led him to win the title.

“My tee shots were pretty consistent,” Christensen said. “My putting was really good all week, which in match play is huge. In match play, you have to be able to hole your putts, or else you’re not going to get anything given to you. So all that was probably the biggest difference maker for me.”

Andrew Olson of Alexandria was the medalist in the division with his top finish in the stroke play qualifying round.

Olson shot 5-under par (67) in the qualifying round.

Troy Johnson came into the tournament as the winner of the last five Men’s Executive division titles but was upset in the first round by the No. 31 seed Bill Mulvahill, 4-3, on Wednesday, Aug. 2.

ALEXANDRIA – Jon Empanger may have to find more space to put his Resorters trophies.

He won his 10th one on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2023, edging Mike Herzog 2-1 in the finals of the Men’s Masters Championship at the Alexandria Golf Club. It was the closest match Empanger played in this year’s tournament. As the defending champion, Empanger automatically qualified for the tournament and then posted victories of 7-6, 5-3, and 6-4 to make it into the finals. His opponents were all Resorters’ veterans –Roger Ledebuhr, Steve Herzog, and Greg Mattson. Against Mattson, Empanger

Bull beats the defending champion

Krista Bull hadn’t played in a Resorters tournament since high school, long before she and her husband started transporting their three sons every which way for sporting events and school activities. And that busy life has kept her from returning. But in 2023 , the family blocked off the schedule and skipped out on a hockey tournament to make the trip to Alexandria Golf Club happen - a dream come true for her father, Roger Ledebuhr.

“My dad’s dream was for all of us to come back and for his kids and grandkids to play in the Resorters, so that’s why

She will also have to return to defend her title that she won in spectacular fashion after earning upset wins in all four rounds and defeating seven-time Resorters champion and former U.S. Women’s Amateur qualifier Betsy Aldrich in the final.

Bull had a chance to knock off Aldrich on hole 18 but missed the putt, so they jumped up to hole 1 for the tiebreaker. Bull drove the green on her tee shot and, after a long putt, had the chance for a birdie to seal the win.

MEN'S GRAND MASTERS

Skip Madsen takes home Grand Masters title

After his championship win on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2023, Skip Madsen asked for a copy of the paper. He needed it for his wife who was back home in San Diego. He’d told her he’d won.

“Prove it,” she’d said.

Well, here’s proof. Skip Madsen is the 2023 Resorters Grand Masters champion.

Madsen entered last week’s competition with a litany of titles under his belt, none that he’s more proud of than a North Dakota amateur state championship from 1980, but several years ago, he’d made a promise to himself to return to the Resorters for a crack at the Grand Masters title, a promise he kept,

despite a busy schedule at the private bank he runs back in California.

“Oh man, I had a hard time getting up here,” Madsen said. “I was making deals left and right because I know the window (to keep playing golf well) closes fast. It gets harder and harder as time goes on. Like Charles Barkley says, ‘No one beats Father Time.’”

And with that reality, Madsen is unsure if he’ll be back next year to defend his title, but he’s grateful to have been in Alexandria this past weekend.

“It’s a privilege to be here,” Madsen said. “The main reason I come up here is the people, oh the people. There’s nothing like this in the country. I’ve been all over the place, and there’s nothing

like this. This is a gift.”

Madsen has made it a habit of sending letters to the courses and staff of the tournaments he plays in to show his appreciation. His letter to the Alexandria Golf Course from a while back was posted in the pro shop.

Despite his many titles and years traveling, Madsen is always learning more from golf, a game

that has humbled him a time or two - a game “that will embarrass you” and forces you to “learn how to handle that.” In fact, just three years ago, he hired a PGA instructor who changed just about everything in his game.

“For six months, everyone kept saying, ‘What’s wrong with you?’ But I

Coatta captures his 昀椀rst title

Max Coatta has been coming to the Resorters for about fifteen years, but he’s never quite had a year like this one.

The Minnesota State University-Mankato graduate and current professional hockey player pulled off three upsets over the course of match play, including his win in the finals. But it was not an easy week.

“Golf is hard. I haven’t won too many matches up here, so it was stressful. I knew golf was hard, but the pressure and the stress was a lot,” Coatta said.

However, the 2023 Men’s Regular champion isn’t a stranger to intense competition.

On the ice, he played this past season for the Rapid City Rush out of South Dakota, for whom he appeared in 72 games, recording 17 goals and 24 assists. It was his second year with the Rush, which competes in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL).

The 29-year-old has been pursuing that dream for the past several years, playing for teams in Arizona, Idaho, and West Virginia, but he always makes time for the Resorters.

“I came up here with the Woodhull group (friends) 15-20 years ago and haven’t missed a year since,” Coatta said. “It’s a fun week with family and friends, surrounded by great people.”

One such person is his

girlfriend, Erin Nanne, who competed in the Women’s Championship division. Coatta credits her with helping him through Saturday’s championship round.

“It was a blast. It was a playoff that I won on 20 holes,” Coatta said. “We both birdied the first, and I parred the second, just made my putts. I had a great caddie; she gave me a lot of good reads,” Coatta said.

Coatta def. Banyai, 20 holes

Competing as the No. 12 seed Max Coatta capped his best-ever performance at the Resorters with an extra-hole win over the No. 7 seed Kendell Banyai in the finals on Aug. 5, 2023.

Mike Herzog follows through on a drive on the 1st tee during the Men's Masters Championship on Aug. 5, 2023, at the 102nd Resorters Tournament.

together.

“It’s such a family atmosphere," Empanger added. “The golf course is always in great shape. I love the layout.”

When asked to share his biggest memories of his 45 other Resorters appearances, Empanger, 68, said, “My greatest memory is probably my match with Tom Lehman back in 1982 or something. It was a spectacular match. I probably remember the losses more than I remember the wins, to be honest with you. Those have a tendency to stick with you better than the good things.”

Empanger was satisfied with his play during Resorters week. “It was a good week; I played really well, some of the best golf I’ve played in years,” he said.

Empanger def. Herzog, 2-1

Empanger took a quick lead, winning the first two holes with a par and a birdie. They halved No. 3, and Empanger’s par on No. 4 put him 3-up. Herzog battled back, winning No. 5 on a rare Empanger miscue, a double-bogey. Herzog was able to match Empanger’s pars on the next two holes, and Herzog’s birdie on No. 8 narrowed the lead to one. Empanger parred No. 9 to take a 2-up lead at the

turn.

Both golfers parred Nos. 10 and 11. Herzog wasn’t done yet. He birdied the par-5 12th hole, and his par on No. 13 deadlocked the match. After halving the next hole, Herzog’s bogeys on Nos. 13 and 14 hurt his chances. Empanger was able to par both of them to go 2-up. Pars on No. 17 ended the match.

Echo Press records have Empanger winning five Men’s Executive titles (1993, 1997, 2004, 2007, 2008), three Men’s Seniors championships (2009, 2010, 2011), and now back-to-back Men’s Masters titles.

shocked when it goes in. And it really wasn’t that long of a putt, but I’m still just like, ‘Oh my, it went in,’” Bull laughed. “It was a great week; it really was. I did not expect this.”

Bull def. Aldrich, 19 holes

Bull, the No. 14 seed, led Aldrich, the No. 5 seed, for almost all of the

final. Bull opened proceedings with a portentous birdie on hole 1 and after swapping a few holes entered the back nine with a 1-hole lead. Bull added to the lead with a par on hole 11. But Aldrich clawed back late with pars on holes 13 and 17. The pair tied hole 18 and traveled back to hole one for extra holes to crown a champion, where Bull knocked in her second birdie to claim her first title.

division last year, and he won the Junior 10-12 tournament in 2020.

What did it take to successfully defend his title?

“It’s a lot of practice; I’ve been playing my whole life, just got to practice a lot,” he said.

Esterline was the No. 5 seed in the division. He defeated the No. 12 seed, Ehren Anderson, and the No. 13 seed, Blake Scholl, before knocking off the No. 1 seed, Will Thornburg, to advance into the finals.

Esterline’s favorite memory of the weekend: A second round chip in on No. 12 from behind the green.

Esterline, who just turned 15, qualified for the U.S. Kids Golf World

Championships at Pinehurst for the past 10 years and played in the World competition six times.

Esterline def. Denny, 2-1

Esterline took the first lead with a birdie on No. 1, but Denny answered with a par win on No. 2. They both halved the next two holes, going bogey, and birdie before Denny bounced in the lead with a par on No. 5. Esterline quickly erased the advantage with a birdie on No. 6 to tie the match.

Both golfers parred the No. 7 Minnesota Green, and Denny’s par took No. 8 to put him in the lead for the second time.

Denny, however, ran into double-bogey troubles on the No. 9 hole, which left the match deadlocked at the turn.

Denny took the lead

again with a par on No. 10 and matched Esterline’s par on No. 11. In a turning point in the match, Esterline made back-to-back birdies on Nos. 12 and 13 to surge into the lead. Denny won No. 14 to tie the match, but after that, it was all Esterline. He parred Nos. 15 and 16 to go 2-up and then sealed the victory by matching Denny’s par on No. 17.

When asked to reflect on hole 17, Esterline said, “That last putt I was standing over, and I knew I had to get good speed, and I couldn’t have hit it any better. [I remember seeing] all my friends and family that supported me; it was great.”

Esterline was 2-over par when the match ended, while Denny was 6-over.

The Grand Masters final featured the top two seeds, with Madsen, the qualifying medalist, as the the No. 1 seed and Michael Golden, the defending champion, as the No. 2 seed. The defending champion scored first by knocking in a par on hole 3, but Madsen tied the match up on the next hole and claimed the lead with a birdie on hole 5. Madsen

shot pars for the rest of the round and, in doing so, was able to win three more holes and the championship by hole 15.

Madsen was the top seed in the bracket posting a two-day qualifying round total of 158 (14-over par).

After an opening round bye, Madsen defeated the No. 5 seed Clayton Pike, 9-7, in the semifinals on Aug. 3, 2023.

calendar year away. It says our tournament is packed, and these kids are coming from all over. It's pretty special. The talent that's coming to the Resorters is just amazing."

A new contender has been added to the Men's division this year, Lunden Esterline.

Esterline is already a three-time Resorters champion, having won a Junior 10-12 title in 2020 and the last two Junior 13-15 titles.

Esterline, who lives in Alexandria in the summer, has also made a name for himself at the high school level in Kansas. The soon-to-be sophomore at Wichita Collegiate High School won the 2024 Kansas State High School Activities Association Class 3A individual state title with a 36-hole total of 140 (10-under par). He won the Kansas Class 3A individual state title by 10 strokes.

"He doesn't lose that often," Lee said. "Not only is he good as a teenager, but he's competing well against 25 to 30-year-old guys."

Esterline will try to replicate what Braeden Sladek of Alexandria did in 2021 by winning the Men's Resorters title as a high schooler.

With Esterline moving up the Men's Championship division, a new Junior 13-15 division champion will be crowned for the first time since 2021.

The Junior 13-15 division is bigger this year, as 16 spots were added to the tournament.

"It grew this year based on demand," Ashley Lee of the Alexandria Golf Club said. "I think it's really exciting, especially with where junior golf is heading and how excited the Alexandria community is about junior golf. We have a lot of great players in the state of Minnesota and from beyond coming to compete. I think those junior divisions are going to be some of the more exciting divisions to watch."

Another addition to the tournament this year is the expansion of the long drive contest on Wednesday night.

"We're trying to open up the long drive this year to an open division," Kyle Lee said on July 16. "You don't have

to be a contest of the Resorters to be in the long drive contest. What that looks like is kind of still up in the air right now. But we're going to have a qualifier for the open division."

In the Men's Grand Masters division, there will now be two qualifying rounds.

Other returning champs who are set to compete this year in the same division as they did last year are Madi Hicks (Women's Championship), Krista Bull (Women's Executive), Dave Christensen (Men's Executive), Jon Freeman (Men's Senior), Skip Madsen (Men's Grand Masters), and Jon Empanger (Men's Masters).

Garrison Johnson, the 2023 Junior 10-12 division champion, has moved up to the Junior 13-15 division this year.

Hicks led the North Dakota State Women's Golf team in scoring average (74.7) and was an All-Summit League Honorable Mention. Hicks is one of many college golfers in the women's championship division this year, including her college teammate, Cora Larson of Alexandria.

Another returning champion in the Women's division is former Alexandria Cardinal and current Montana State Bobcat Hannah Boraas, who won the Women's division in 2022 and the Junior 13-15 division in 2020.

These three and a few others competed in a tough tournament prior to this tournament. They

One of the holes at the Alexandria Golf Club could look a little bit different than it has in past tournaments. The 11th hole is being worked on, and instead of being a par 4, 320-yard hole, it could be shortened to a par 3 hole with the tee box being in the middle of the fairway.

“It is still a great surface, and there's not going to be too many implications of play,” Kyle Lee said.

Dannach O'Connor is the course's superintendent, and his assistant is Jake Fennow. They have been leading the efforts with the work that is being done on hole 11.

The 11th hole has been played as a par 3 of about 150 yards this summer. It is being designed by Jack Dredla, who has worked on many Tom Lehman-designed courses.

This has made the pace of play on the back nine quicker.

"That's going to be an interesting thing with the Resorters in terms of staggering the players accordingly," Kyle Lee said. "It's going to be a great hole. I think, overall, people will be interested in seeing it. It's gorgeous. Dredla did a great job this year."

This renovation is a part of a long term plan to make a sort of amphitheater on the back nine.

"It's not going be fully there this year, but in the backstage of the project, we're plotting an amphitheater so you can see holes 11, 12, and 17," Kyle Lee said. "It's going to be exciting to show that starting this year."
