CLOSE CALLS ALL AROUND
Olsen upsets Herzog in a day of tight matches By Eric Morken and Sam Stuve Alexandria Echo Press
T
he competition level in the Women’s Division at the 2022 Resorters Tournament was on display on Wednesday afternoon. All eight matches in the field were decided by four holes or less. That meant some close calls for top seeds, but the majority of them survived into the quarterfinals. That includes top-seeded Emma Carpenter and defending champion Alayna Eldred. Carpenter won a 4-3 match, and Eldred persevered for a 3-2 win over another former champion in this field, Leah Herzog of Red Wing. The biggest upset of the day came with 14th-seeded MacKenzie Olsen knocking off last year’s runner-up, Madison Herzog of Detroit Lakes, in a 2-up match. The quarter finalists in the women’s field will tee off again on Friday afternoon to decide who will play in the semifinals on Saturday morning. Here is a look at how all of the first-round matches went on Wednesday afternoon.
Carpenter def. Bigger, 4-3
Emma Carpenter out of the University of Minnesota
withstood a challenge from Alexandria native Amanda Bigger to win 4-3. Carpenter took the first two holes with pars before Bigger had a nice up and down out of the sand on No. 3 to get a birdie win of her own. Carpenter shot back with a birdie win on the par-five 6th, but Bigger again responded with the next two wins — with par on 7 and a bogey on 10. That left things all square. Carpenter stayed patient and capitalized on a double bogey by Bigger at 10. A win there moved Carpenter to one up, and she used a par win at 13 to take final control of the match on her way into the quarterfinals.
Sommers def. Catherine Monty, 2-up
The No. 9 seed Catherine Monty and No. 8 seed Samantha Sommers were dead locked after nine holes. But with three holes won on the back nine, including the par 5 12th and 14th, Sommers came away with the 1-up win. Sommers got off to a good start with a birdie and par win at 1 and 2. Monty did not back down as she took 4 and 7 with pars before the two exchanged par wins over eight and nine.

Stockmoe def. Heinen, 19 holes
Alexandria’s Lauren Stockmoe held off 2020 champion Ale Heinen in 19 holes. Stockmoe led by four at the turn. She took Nos. 1, 5, 7 and 9 with pars around a bogey win at 4. Heinen got a par win at 6 to stay within striking distance, and then went on a run on the back nine. Heinen settled in to earn par wins at Nos. 11 and 12 and then added a birdie win at 14 to move within one. The two halved the next three holes, setting up Heinen to take 18 and force a playoff. She could not quite finish the job as Stockmoe bounced back to win on the first playoff hole and advance to Friday’s quarterfinals.
Skaar def. Larson, 2-1
With three pars that led to three holes won on the front nine, the No. 5 seed Leah Skaar had a 3-up advantage heading to the back nine over No. 12 seed Cora Larson. Larson did make a dent in Skaar’s lead, but Skaar held on to win 2-1. Skaar won holes 1, 5, 8 and 14, the latter of which she birdied, while Larson won holes 12 and 15. Both players halved Nos. 16 and 17 to end the

Cox downs defending champ Rest of top qualifiers advance By Eric Morken Alexandria Echo Press The round of 16 for the Men’s Championship Division is set with many of the top seeds advancing from the opening round. One exception to that is the defending champ. Alexandria’s Braeden Sladek fell in a 3-2 final to 31st-seeded Kyle Cox. Cox is a Carrollton, Texas native who plays for the University of Texas-Arlington. Here is a look at how the matches played out on Wednesday.
Nate Adams def. Nicholas Adams, 4-3
A battle of the Adams brothers went to top-seeded Nate as the NDSU golfer beat Nicholas in a 4-3 final. Nicholas led by one after taking holes 4 and 5 with a par and a birdie. Nate bounced back with a birdie and par win of his own at 6 and 7, but Nicholas was back to one up after he birdied both 8 and 9 going into the turn. Nate took control on the back nine. He birdied holes 10 and 11 to retake the lead and then added a par win on 12. Two more birdies on 14 and 15 put an end to the match.

Ryan Conn took control of his match against Noah Boraas near the midway point as Conn’s three straight wins with pars from 7-9 moved him to 3-up. A birdie win at 10 added to that lead, and he got another birdie win at the par-three 13th to secure the win after both players parred 14.

Sean Lehman beat Jim Lehman by a 2-1 final. No details of the match were kept through live scoring.
Jon Sauer jumpstarted his round with a birdie win on 3 that was part of three straight wins for Sauer. That helped him gain a lead he never gave back. Alec Heinen pulled back to within one with a par win at 6, but Sauer won with a par and a birdie on 7 and 8. His 3-up lead only grew once they got to the back nine. Sauer birdied the first three holes on 10-12 and won all of them. Both players then birdied the parthree 13th, and that was enough for Sauer to end things in a 6-5 final.
Brown def. Renner, 4-2
Last year’s runner-up, Kelly Brown, had three birdie wins on the back nine to put away Danny Renner in a 4-2 final. Brown birdied holes 12, 14 and 16. Things were close through much of the front nine as Brown won No. 1 with birdie and 4 with bogey. Renner’s wins came at 6 with an eagle and 8 with a bogey before his par at 13 moved his deficit back down to two. Brown responded immediately with the birdie at 14 to help swing the momentum again.

Zak Jones built a 3-up lead over Jack Johnson in his 4-3 win. Jones got birdie wins at Nos. 1 and 6 around par wins at 2 and 4. That fast start helped him secure the 4-3 win. Top seeds shine around Lambros’ upset By Eric Morken Alexandria Echo Press Rose Lambros got a big win in the Women’s Executive Division on Wednesday as the 14th seed took a 2-1 match from third-seeded Pam Marlow. Tenth-seeded Heather Steege also got a 4-3 win over seventh-seeded Colleen Boerboom. The rest of the matches went according to the seed line in this division. Here is a look at how all eight matchups played out before the quarter-finalists step to the first tee box at 12:36 p.m. on Thursday.

Lisa Sobba battled Jessica Kammann in a close match all afternoon, and Sobba came away with a 1-up win when it was all said and done. Caroline Monty recovered from an early two-hole deficit to beat Lauren Contreras 3-2. Contreras jumped out early with an eagle win at the par-five third hole and a par win at 4. Monty, a recent graduate from Stillwater, bounced right back, going par, birdie, par over her next three holes to win all three and take the 1-up advantage. That was the start of a big stretch for Monty.
She added par wins at Nos. 9 and 10 to move to three up. Contreras tried to climb back with a par win at 12, but another par from Monty at 14 helped her fend off the rally and move on.

The top upset of the day came in the matchup between 14th-seeded MacKenzie Olson and third-seeded Madison Herzog. Herzog, an NDSU golfer, Detroit Lakes native and two-time runner-up in this division, was one up at the turn, but Olsen controlled the back nine to secure a 2-up victory.

Olsen is a Stewartville native and plays her collegiate golf at Upper Iowa University. Olsen was steady on the back, parring Nos. 10 and 11 and birdying the par-three 13th to take a 2-up advantage. Two Alexandrians go head to head in final round of putting contest The event went until last light on Wednesday By Thalen Zimmerman ALEXANDRIA – As the sun tucked itself below the horizon, a sliver of last light illuminated the putting green at the Alexandria Golf Club when Lukas Bigger, 25, of Alexandria secured the win in the annual Resorters putting contest over fellow Alexandrian Aaron Johnson, 26, on Wednesday. “I think it’s a fun thing… Something to burn some time,” said Bigger. “Secure the dub. It’s always fun.” As far as the prize, he says he may give it to his brother-in-law as a tip since he’s been carrying Bigger’s golf bag around all week. Delays earlier in the day pushed the contest back as officials had to wait for contestants to arrive at the green. And as putters slowly

By Eric Morken Alexandria Echo Press Wednesday’s round of 16 in the Senior Division saw a few more matches go to the higher seeds as Lance Sunder (25th), Brant Mcleod (20th) and Eric Peterson (22nd) all continued their strong stretch of play to earn a spot in Thursday’s quarterfinals. Joining them there is 16th seeded Jeff Pederson, 12th-seeded Mike Herzog, defending champion and second-seeded Mark Lindberg, two-time division champ Chris Haugen, and third-seeded Tom Abrahamson. Thursday’s matches include a showdown between last year’s finalists in this division in Lindberg and Haugen. Lindberg won a 1-up match between these two last summer, and Haugen won the 2017 and 2018 championships in the Senior Division. Here is a look at how all eight players advanced before they step to the first tee box on Thursday.

Champion and medalist roll on in Men’s Executive But there were a few upsets By Al Edenloff aedenloff@echopress.com Four time division champion Troy Johnson of Maple Grove and this year’s medalist Geoff Klein breezed to quick victories during a windy Wednesday in the Men’s Executive Division. Both their matches were over after 14 holes. The second-seed, Bryan Hoops, who shot a 71 in qualifying, also had a short match, winning in just 11 holes. But not all the matches were lopsided. Ninth seeded Andew Petersen needed all 18 holes to defeat the 24th seed, Steve Tax; the fourth seed, Chad Hacker, took 17 holes to put away the 19th seed, Tyler Wirth; and the seventh seed Daryl Schomer survived a 17-hole match against the 26th seed, Chad Marlow. There were also some upsets. Daniel Klein, the 22nd seed, knocked out 11th-seeded Chad Bisson; Jeffry Cota, the 21st seed, defeated Troy Nygaard, the 12th seed; and the 20th seed, Chris Cattoor edged the 13th seed, Tom Heimerman. The 16 golfers who outlasted the wind and their opponents will tee it up today at 12:55 p.m. from the No. 1 tee. Meanwhile, here’s a look back at yesterday’s matches:

Medalist Geoff Klein continues to swing a hot club. He made four birdies in his match against Joshua Bell, which propelled him to a 6-4 win. The match was close through the first five holes. Starting on the No. 10 tee, Bell won the hole with a bogey. Klein recovered with a birdie on No. 11 and stole the lead with a par on No. 12. Bell, however, answered with a birdie on No. 14 to tie the match. Klein then reeled off four straight wins, highlighted by birdies on Nos. 16 and 18 to take a 4-up lead at the turn. Decko tried to get back in it but could only match Williams’ bogey on No. 16 and pars on Nos. 17 and 18, and still trailed by four at the turn. Williams’ birdie on No. 1 put him 5-up. Decko recorded his only win of the match, a par on No. 3 but it wasn’t enough. Williams closed out the match with a par win on No. 4 and a birdie on No. 5 for a 6-4 victory.

Skaar, Boraas finish top five at MGA Championship ahead of Resorters By Eric Morken Alexandria Echo Press ROCHESTER — A couple of Douglas County area golfers finished in the top five of the Minnesota Golf Association Women’s Amateur Championship this week. Leah Skaar, playing out of the Minnewaska Golf Club, held a twoday lead in the tournament that was played at the Rochester Golf & Country Club from July 27-29. Skaar is a junior golfer at North Dakota State University. She shot rounds of 70 and

By Eric Morken Alexandria Echo Press Five of the top eight seeds in the Masters Division are still standing after the opening round of match play on Wednesday afternoon. That included top-seeded Steve Herzog, who rolled in an 8-7 final against 16th-seeded Michael Flesch. The tightest matches of the opening round came with 2018 Masters champion Randy Johnson storming back to beat Norty Blanchard in 19 holes, and Bruce Leland taking down three-time champ Dan Elton of Moorhead. Here is a look at how all eight matches played out ahead of Thursday’s noon start for this division off the first tee box.

Six-time Resorters champion Steve Herzog was as dominant from the start as a golfer can be in match play on Wednesday. Comebacks and clutch play in Grand Masters Three of the four matches lasted at least 17 holes By Al Edenloff aedenloff@echopress.com Those following the Men’s Grand Masters quarterfinals Wednesday saw a little bit of everything – a blowout, a grueling extra-hole battle, a close white-knuckler of a match, and one amazing comeback. After the dust settled in all that wind out there, four golfers kept their championship hopes alive – Mike Golden, Gene Sipe, Jerry Gruidl and Dave Harris. They will tee it at 8:50 a.m. from the No. 1 on Friday. Here’s a look at how they got there (golfers started from the No. 10 tee):
