PLAYING TO THEIR POTENTIAL
Top seeds live up to expectations, while Olson gets past Schomer
B
By Eric Morken Alexandria Echo Press
eing a top-10 seed does not necessarily mean much when a tournament format like the Resorters turns from stroke play in qualifying to match play the rest of the way, but low seeds in the Men’s Executive Division have played up to their expectations all week. Seven of the top eight will play in Friday afternoon’s quarterfinals. The only outlier is 10th-seeded Andrew Olson. He took down a perennial power in this field by outlasting four-time Men’s Execs champion Daryl Schomer of St. Cloud in a 3-2 match on Thursday. Geoff Klein, Joe Sauer, Chad Hacker and Shay Conder all rolled in their second-round matches, while the bottom half of the bracket featured some nailbiters. Second-seeded Bryan Hoops survived a 1-up battle with 18th-seeded Kerry O’Donnell. Olson, Nick Paulsen and Troy Johnson all came out victorious in tight matches too. Here is a look at how all eight got here before they step to the first tee box starting at 1:30 on Friday afternoon.
Geoff Klein def. Mike Williams, 7-6
Top-seeded Geoff Klein is certainly living up to that No. 1 seed so far. Klein followed up a 6-4 win in his opening match on Wednesday by controlling another on Thursday in a 7-6 win over 16th-seeded Mike Williams. Klein torched the front nine, shooting a 5-under 31 and building a 7-up lead. He took holes 1, 8 and 9 with birdies, and highlighted his round with an eagle win at the parfive sixth hole. Klein’s only blemish of the day came with a bogey at 10. Williams took the hole with a par, but Klein bounced right back and won 11 with a par himself. Another par at the par-five 12th halved the hole and put the match away.
Joe Sauer def. Andrew Petersen, 5-3
Joe Sauer started his day with a birdie to grab a quick 1-up lead in his match against Andy Petersen, and that was the start of a round where he shot 4-under par through a 5-3 win. Sauer was 3-up at the turn by getting birdie wins at 5 and 8 and a par win at 4 around Petersen’s par win on hole 3. The two exchanged par wins on 10 and 11. Sauer moved back to 4-up with a par on 13,

Hacker def. Cattoor, 6-5 Chris Cattoor had an off day in his match against Hacker, and Hacker made sure to take advantage of it.
Cattoor shot a 44 on the front nine. That allowed Hacker to grab four par wins on Nos. 1, 5, 6 and 7. Cattoor got one back at the eighth with a par, but Hacker’s first birdie of the day on 10 was the start of a strong

MEN’S CHAMPS
Medalist falls to 16th seed Gunnar Broin is the top seed now By Al Edenloff
Alexandria Echo Press
A big change rippled through the Men’s Championship Division on Thursday. Medalist Nate Adams could not hold off the hard-charging Nate Deziel, his golfing teammate at North Dakota State University, and was eliminated. That leaves Gunnar Broin as the top seed at No. 3. He rolled to a 4-3 win Thursday. The fourth and fifth seeds also remain – Gavin Cronkhite who breezed to a 6-5 win and Lincoln Johnson who survived an 18-hole dogfight against Jaques Wilson. The division’s “Elite Eight” will play Friday to make it into the semifinals. They’ll tee it up from No. 1 at 1:50 p.m.

Jarrett def. Meyer in 20 holes
In the division’s longest duel of the afternoon, Nick Jarrett survived a back-and-forth battle – and an eagle – to take down Ian Meyer in 20 holes. They each won three holes on the front. Jarrett took Nos. 1 (birdie), 4 (par) and 9 (par) while Meyer racked up wins on Nos. 2 (par), 3 (par) and 6 (eagle). Deadlocked at the turn, Jarrett broke the tie with a birdie on No. 10. Meyer quickly recovered with a birdie on the next hole to knot it up. Meyer moved into the lead for the third time with a birdie on the 13th hole but Jarrett tied it Deziel def. Johnson def. Wilson, 1-up
In one of the better played rounds of the afternoon, Lincoln Johnson was shooting 6-under-par after 13 holes while Wilson was 3-under. Johnson won holes 3,11,12 and 13 during that stretch with two birdies, an eagle and a par. Wilson won two holes, Nos. 2 and 10 with birdies and trailed by two after 13 holes. Wilson mounted a comeback and drew to within one hole before Johnson was able to nail down a 1-up win.

Conn def. Sean Lehman, 4-3
Conn overcame an early deficit against Sean Lehman, put together a couple crucial back-to-back wins and coasted to a 4-3 win. Lehman won the first two holes with birdies but Conn erased them with par wins on Nos. 3 and 4 to draw even. JUNIOR 13-15
Semifinalists have plenty of past success Division resumes Friday afternoon By Eric Morken Alexandria Echo Press The final four standing in the Junior 13-15 Division had a day off on Thursday to think about things ahead of their Friday afternoon tee time in the semifinals. Whoever comes out of this division will be adding to what has been a successful young career at the Resorters tournament already. Lunden Esterline is the top seed and a 2020 champion in the Junior 10-12 Division. His Friday opponent, Carson Boe of Cottonwood, is coming off a spring season where he finished tied for 22nd at the Class A state meet as a freshman in high school. Is it Boe’s year to finish off a title at the Resorters after taking second in this division each of the last two summers? Like Boe a couple of years ago, Will Hacker is proving at a young age that he is ready to compete in the upper junior division. He has made his run to the semifinals as a 14 seed after winning last year’s Junior 10-12 Division title. Hacker will likely have his toughest test waiting for him on Friday. Alexandria’s Carver Larson is a veteran of two state tournament appearances with the Alexandria boys golf team during the spring season. As the second seed this year, he is looking for a second Resorters championship after winning the 10-12 division in 2019. The final four players will tee off from the first box at 2:10 p.m. on Friday.

Here is a look back at the path they took to get here.
Esterline playing like a top seed
Esterline has been steady all week. He qualified as the top seed as the lone golfer in the division to shoot even par. That round epitomized the way he makes opponents beat him in match play. It included two birdies, just two bogeys and then 14 pars. Esterline rolled in his opening match with a 7-5 win on Monday. He had a tougher match against Adam Crosby on Wednesday, but finished off a 3-2 win. Esterline used a threehole stretch on the front nine against Crosby, which was his second nine, to get by. He got a birdie, par and bogey win at Nos. 3-5 that moved him to four up. Crosby got a hole back with a birdie win at the par-five sixth, but both players halved No. 7 to end the match early. Esterline’s wins on the back came with a birdie on 12 and pars on 14, 16 and 18. That was enough to take a 2-up lead to the front after Crosby got a birdie win at 13 and a par win at 17.

WOMEN’S EXECUTIVE
Sullivan, Baker make it back to the semifinals O’Donnell and Cummings join them
time women’s executive champion and two-time women’s champion Betsy Aldrich. Here are the full results from Thursday’s quarterfinal matches.
By Sam Stuve Alexandria Echo Press The top two seeds in the Women’s Executive bracket, No. 1 Amanda O’Donnell and No. 2 Jodi Sullivan, captured victories in less than 18 holes in the quarterfinal round on Thursday. Meanwhile, sixth-seeded Caitlin Cummings and fifth-seeded Molly Baker earned close wins to advance to Friday’s semifinals. Sullivan has plenty of experience making deep runs in this field in recent years. She finished as the Women’s Executive champion in 2018 and runner-up in 2017 and 2019. Sullivan is a two-time Women’s Division champion. Baker has been to this stage before as well and has pushed through to the finals. She finished as the runner-up in the 2021 Resorters Tournament, falling to four-
O’Donnell def. Lisa Sobba, 4-2
A strong finish to the front nine led O’Donnell to victory over the eight-seeded Lisa Sobba. With both of them having won two holes out of the first five, O’Donnell took control of the match on hole 6, winning the hole, along with 7 and 9. Sobba cut O’Donnell’s lead down to two heading to the 13th hole, but O’Donnell put the match away with a birdie on hole 15 and a par on hole 16. In each round she has played, including the qualifying round, O’Donnell has started on hole 1 with a par and has won the first two out of three holes in both match play rounds.
Baker def. Allyn, 1-up The

Baker and four-seeded Andrea Allyn was as close as one would expect a No. 5 versus No. 4 match to go. Baker led 2-up after nine holes thanks to winning holes 2 and 8. Baker led 3-up after winning a hole on the back nine, but Allyn clawed back to trim Baker’s winning margin to 1-up. Baker has won the second hole in both match play rounds and has parred hole 7 in the match play rounds and qualifying round.
Sullivan def. Steege, 4-3
On holes 8 through 15, Sullivan has been in control of her matches and that was the case for her quarterfinal match against seventh-seeded Heather Steege. With the match tied headed to the eighth, Sullivan won that hole along with the 11th, 13th and 15th to earn a 4-3 win over Steege. Sullivan has won 12 holes in the match play rounds, 10 of which have come between holes 8 and 15. She hasn’t needed to play holes 16, 17 and 18.
Cummings def. Lambros, 2-1
Molly Baker follows through on a tee shot on the fourth hole at the Alexandria Golf Club on Aug. 4, 2022. Baker is the fifth seed in the Women’s Executive division and is looking to get back to the finals after finishing runner-up a year ago.
Sam Stuve / Alexandria Echo Press
Jodi Sullivan lines up a putt on the No. 3 green at the Alexandria Golf Club on Aug. 4, 2022. Sullivan is a two-time Women's Division champion at the Resorters, a Women’s Executive Division champ and a two-time runner-up in Women's Execs. She has a chance to add to those accolades this year as she is now in the semifinals on Friday, Aug. 5, 2022.
14th seeded Rose Lambros couldn’t quite capture the same magic in Thursday’s quarterfinal match against Caitlin Cummings as she had in her Wednesday win over Top-seeded Amanda O’Donnell chips from just off the left side of the No. 3 green No. 3 seed Pam Marlow. Shay Conder launches a tee shot to the “Minnesota Hole” at the Alexandria Golf Club on Aug. 4, 2022. Conder won the No. 7 hole en route to earning his second convincing match play win of the tournament.
Friday, August 5, 2022 | 11
Bryan Hoops and Kerry O’Donnell went to the 18th hole all square after the two went back-and-forth down the stretch. Hoops went 1-up after 16 with a par win, only to watch as O’Donnell tied things up on the par-three 17th with a par of his own. That set the stage for a dramatic final hole where a bogey by O’Donnell opened the door for Hoops to steal the match with a par. This match was never separated by more than one hole. Hoops finished at 1-over par 73, while O’Donnell finished with a 75.
Andrew Olson bookended his round with birdie wins on Nos. 1 and 2 against Daryl Schomer, and then by winning holes 13-16 to secure the 3-2 win. Schomer recovered from that early deficit and led by two after a birdie win at 10. Olson immediately recovered from a bogey on that hole. He got a birdie win at 11 to get within one. Both Schomer and Olson parred No. 12, but Schomer had a rare stretch where he opened the door for his opponent. Olson capitalized. His pars on 13 and 16 got him wins, and a bogey on 14 was enough to take the hole as well. Olson added a birdie win at the par-four 15th to help him close things down.
Paulsen def. Heimsness, 3-2
Nick Paulsen trailed by one after an Eric Heimsness birdie at No. 2, but Paulsen responded by winning the next four holes with three pars and a birdie at the par-five sixth. Paulsen never wavered from there. He rattled off nine pars in the next 10 holes, taking No. 10.
Paulsen
Johnson
Heimsness got a birdie win at 12, but it was not enough to close the gap after both players parred holes 13-16.
Troy Johnson def. Daniel Klein, 4-3
Maple Grove’s Troy Johnson continued his stretch of strong play at the Resorters that is going on five years now. Johnson needs three more wins to get a fifth straight title in the Men’s Execs after he put away Dan Klein in a 4-3 match on Thursday. Klein led by one at the turn after winning with an eagle at 6 and a par at 7. Johnson shot 3-over par on the front, but he knows how to handle adversity in match play. He jumpstarted a run of four straight wins from 10-13 by parring No. 10 and sinking a birdie at 11. Klein got into trouble on 12 as his bogey gave Johnson another win before pars on 13 and 15 sent Johnson to another quarterfinal match on Friday. Top-seeded Garrison Johnson hasn’t skipped a beat since the beginning of the qualifying round, but will that continue come Friday? Bronx Esterline is looking to follow in his older brother Lunden’s footsteps and win a Junior 10-12 Division title (won in 2020 by Lunden). Bronx Esterline is the No. 2 seed in the bracket, while Lunden is still going as the top seed in the 13-15 division. Meeting Bronx Esterline in the semifinals is three-seeded Henry Buttweiler, who shook off a slow start in the first match play round. There wasn’t much separation between these

three in the qualifying round as Johnson earned the top seed with a ninehole score of 36 and Esterline and Buttweiler had 37s. Bright had a score of 49 in the qualifying round but has made some noise by beating two top-five seeds in match play thus far. Will his momentum continue on Friday? These four tee off on Friday on hole 10 at 8:40 a.m. and two will advance to the championship on Saturday at 8 a.m. Here’s a look back as to how they each got to the semifinals.
Johnson cruising as a No. 1 seed
In the 14 holes Johnson has played thus far in the match play bracket, he’s won 10 and only lost one. He started the match play bracket on Monday with a 5-4 win over
Monday in six holes by winning holes 12, 13, 14 and 15 to win 5-3. Esterline birded the 12th hole and shot 1-under par through those six holes. Esterline defeated the No. 7 seed Josh Bell on Wednesday, thanks to a hot start that saw him win holes 10, 11 and 12, which helped him win 4-3.
Buttweiler
No. 16 Brody Stout and finished at par through seven holes. Johnson lost his lone hole of the tournament on Wednesday to No. 9 Ryker Thomspon, who won hole No. 10. Johnson quickly turned things around by winning holes 12, 13, and 14 and capped off a 3-1 win with a win on hole No. 17. Johnson has been especially efficient on the par 4 14th as he birdied the hole on Monday and parred the hole on Sunday and Wednesday. Johnson has also birdied the par 4 11th hole and the par 4 17th.
Bright shining in an underdog role

He first trailed the No. 5 seed Bennett Paulsen, by a hole on Monday but won holes 12, 14 and 15, the latter of which was won with a birdie. He won the match 2-1. His deficit was greater on Wednesday as the fourth-seeded Jaxn Hacker held a 2-up lead after two holes. Bright won holes 12, 14 and 15
to take the lead. After Hacker tied the match by winning hole 16, Bright responded with a par on the 17th hole to win the hole and he held on to win the match 1-up.
Consistent play leads Esterline to the semifinals
Esterline has yet to play a full nine in the match play bracket. He put away the No. 15 seed Jagger Kulics on
1-up over 14th seeded Austin Gugisberg. Both carded a 3 and 5 on the last two holes, leading to Buttweiler holding on. Buttweiler had led 1-up after the first hole but Gugisberg led 1-up after winning the next two holes. Buttweiler tied the match by winning hole 15 and won the match with his win on the 16th hole.

WOMEN’S
Intrigue builds as quarterfinalists step to the tee Can Eldred or Boraas win another title, or will a first-time champ emerge? By Eric Morken Alexandria Echo Press The champion of the Women’s Division at this year’s Resorters Tournament will join the men in having to go through 36 holes to do so on Saturday. The eight who made the quarterfinals had Thursday off before getting back on the first tee box starting at 12:40 on Friday afternoon. For the vast majority of the players left standing, a run to Saturday at the Resorters would be an all-new experience. That is certainly not the case for Osakis’ Alayna Eldred. She is the Resorters veteran of this group and a twotime Women’s Division champion from 2014 and 2021. Eldred also finished second in 2020. She will try to take down 10th-seeded Caroline Monty on Friday. Monty is coming off a high school season in Stillwater where she helped lead her team to the Class AAA state tournament. She finished 33rd at the state meet and was named an MVP of her team in Stillwater. Monty got to this week’s quarterfinals by pulling off a slight upset, at least by seeding, when she beat seventh-seeded Lauren Contreras on Wednesday. Alexandria’s Hannah Boraas has also made a deep run in this tournament, but it came in the junior division. Boraas beat a field full of boys to take the 2020 Junior 13-15 title. She will almost certainly play college golf at a high level herself in a couple of years, and she consistently proves in tournaments that she can already play with college-level athletes. Boraas will be a senior in high school this fall. She finished fifth at the MGA Women’s Ama-

Olsen is a Stewartville native who was an All-NSIC second-team selection during the 2021-22 golf season at Upper Iowa. Olsen is an example of the depth in this women’s field this year as her 79 in qualifying barely got her in the championship flight as the 14th seed. She then proceeded to knock off NDSU golfer and a twotime runner-up in this women’s field at the Resorters when she beat third-seeded Madison Herzog in a 2-up match
on Wednesday. On the top half of this year’s bracket, Emma Carpenter is making the most of her first time at the Resorters so far. Carpenter has two years of eligibility left at the University of Minnesota. She posted a career-best round of 69 at the UCF Challenge on Feb. 7, 2022 as a junior with the Gophers. Carpenter shot a 3-under par 70 in qualifying for the Resorters in what was her first time ever playing the course at the Alexandria Golf Club. The DeKalb, Illinois native had five birdies in qualifying and followed it up with a 4-3 win over Amanda Bigger in match play on Wednesday.
Samantha Sommers, a former golfer for the Gophers at the University of Minnesota, chips onto the green during match play in the Women's Division at the Resorters Tournament on Aug. 3, 2022. Sommers won a 1-up match that day and will now face top-seeded Emma Carpenter, a current golfer for the Gophers, during the quarterfinals on Friday. Eighth-seeded Samantha Sommers is next up in trying to take down the top seed when she faces Carpenter on Friday. Sommers is a former golfer for the Gophers herself. She qualified with a 3-over par 76 on Monday, and then won a 1-up battle with ninth-seeded Catherine Monty in match play on Wednesday. Alexandria’s Lauren Stockmoe, who was an All-NSIC golfer at Bemidji State University during the 202021 season, had a good qualifying round to earn the fourth seed in this year’s Resorters field. She shot a 73 on Monday in a round that featured birdies on Nos. 3 and 5 and just one blemish — a double bogey on 10. Around that, Stockmoe was steady as can be, carding 15 pars. She persevered for a 19-hole
win over 2020 Resorters champion Ale Heinen during the first round of match play. Stockmoe’s opponent on Friday is another talented college golfer in Leah Skaar, a junior at North Dakota State University. Skaar made a run at the MGA Amateur title this summer, leading after two days at the Rochester Golf & Country Club from July 27-29. She shot rounds of 70, 74 and 75 to finish tied for second at the amateur championship. Skaar had a good back nine during her 1-over par round of 74 in qualifying for this year’s Resorters to take the fifth seed. She bogeyed 10, but bounced right back with birdies on Nos. 11 and 12 before coasting to six straight pars to end her round. Skaar beat a future NDSU teammate in Alexandria’s Cora Larson
during the first round of match play. Larson, who graduated this past spring after joining Boraas in helping to lead their high school team to back-to-back state titles, pushed Skaar down the stretch. Early wins for Skaar on Wednesday at 1, 5 and 8 proved to be the difference. Resorters Tournament chairman Jerry Rose called this women’s field the deepest it has been in many years. It is looking that way through the early going. Who will advance to Saturday’s semifinals? That will be decided when they tee off from the first box at 12:40 and 12:50 on Friday afternoon. Defending champ Lindberg advances to semifinals No. 2 and 3 seeds face off; double-digit seeds fight for finals spot By Sam Stuve and Al Edenloff Alexandria Echo Press The Men’s Senior Division quarterfinals didn’t disappoint. Highlights included an upset, a down-tothe-wire finish and an extra hole thriller. The final four includes underdog Lance Sunder, the defending champion Mark Lindberg, Alexandria native Mike Herzog, and the 1999 Resorters Men’s Executive champion, Tom Abrahamson. Lindberg is on the hunt for another seniors’ championship. He got one step closer to accomplishing his goal by winning 2-1 over the No. 7 seed Chris Haugen, who won the seniors championship in 2017 and 2018. Lindberg is set to face No. 3 Thomas Abrahamson, who came back from down four after four holes to force a playoff, which he won. In the top half of the bracket, two double-digit seeds have made it to the semifinals, the 25th seeded Lance Sunder and 12th seeded Mike Herzog. Here are the full results from Thursday’s quarterfinal matches.
Sunder def. Pederson, 1-up
Sunder, the division’s 25th seed, continues to impress. After taking down the No. 8 seed Chris Berg in the opening round and then the No. 9 seed Dan Hoops, Sunder knocked out the 16th seed, Jeff Pederson, on Thursday. An early lead sparked Sunder’s win. He won three of the first four holes – Nos. 1, 3 and 4 with pars. Pederson stopped the streak with a par win on No. 5 but Sunder came right back, going par, birdie to go

Sunder didn’t crack under the pressure though, winning Nos. 13 and 14 with pars to go 3-up. Pederson mounted another comeback and tied the match, but Sunder hung tough to

to the early lead, winning the first three holes with a birdie and two pars. After halving the next four holes, Haugen got his first win of the day, a birdie on No. 8 to draw within two. Lindberg’s par win on No. 9, however, put him back to 3-up at the turn. Haugen won the par-5 12th hole with a birdie and moved to within a hole with a par win on No. 15. Both golfers parred 16 and Lind-
berg’s bogey was good enough to take the hole and the match, 2-1. In all three match play rounds, Lindberg has birdied one of the first three holes, a different one each day. He’s also either won or birdied hole 17 in the three rounds he’s got to hole 17. He’s won holes 6, 7, and 14 in two of his three match play rounds.

Abrahamson def. Peterson in 19 holes
The Abrahamson-Peterson duel was a tale of two nines. The front nine belonged to Peterson and the back nine was Abrahamson’s. Peterson roared out of the gate, winning the first four holes with par, birdie, par, bogey to go 4-up. After they both bogeyed No. 5, Abrahamson tallied his first win, a birdie on No. 6. Peterson won the next hole, the Minnesota green, but Abrahamsom took No. 8, the Oklahoma green, with par. They halved No. 9 with pars to keep Peterson 3-up at the turn. On the back nine, Peterson won just one hole, a birdie on No. 14. Abrahamson meanwhile, slowly chipped away at the lead, winning Nos. 11, 13 and 17 with pars to draw to within one. Abrahamson also made par on No. 18 to force a playoff. Abramson won the first extra hole to advance to the semifinals. It was the only time he was in the lead. Adding to their Resorters legacy Harris, Gruidl, Sipe, Golden add to deep history at this tournament By Eric Morken Alexandria Echo Press The final four left standing in the Grand Master Division of the Resorters have a long history at this tournament. Countless memories. Some maybe more than 100 matches. Tournament championships for a couple of them. These next couple of days will be about adding to all of that. Pelzel takes down the top seed Resler, Larson and DuBe join him in semifinals By Eric Morken Alexandria Echo Press Cory Pelzel knocked the top seed from the Men’s Regular first flight out of the championship running on Pelzel Thursday morning. Pelzel, seeded eighth, won a 2-1 match over Jack Cummings. Pelzel will now face fifth-seeded Luke Resler in the semifinals on Friday morning. Arnold aims for first title after coming so close Three former champs standing in his way By Eric Morken Alexandria Echo Press Jim Arnold of Plymouth has been a regular contender at the Resorters in different divisions over the years, and he is one step closer to giving Herzog Arnold Ryan Empanger himself another chance at a title. Arnold has finished second in the Senior Division three times. Once to Steve Herzog in 2012, and then to Jeff Pederson in 2014 and to Greg Mattson in 2016. Arnold is one win away from making it back to the finals on Saturday, this time in the Masters Division. If he is going to get a championship, it will come against someone who has the experience of hoisting that trophy. Steve Herzog def. Mattson in 19 holes
Two former champs locked up in a battle on Thursday before Herzog put away Greg Mattson in the first playoff hole. It took rallying on the back nine. Mattson did not give an inch on the front, shooting 37 and leading by two after par wins on 3 and 8. Both players parred holes 10 and 11 before Herzog struck for his first birdie of the day at the par-five 12th to cut his deficit to one. Mattson forced Herzog to make birdie to steal a hole through much of the round. He got another one on 15 to pull even, and then a
rare bogey for Mattson allowed Herzog to grab his first lead with a par win at 16. That’s how things went to the 18th hole. Mattson needed a win,

Jim Arnold watches a tee shot during Masters Division match play at the Resorters Tournament on Aug. 3, 2022. Arnold, who has three runner-up finishes in the Senior Division, is knocking on the door of a title again this year with 3-2 and 5-4 wins through the first two rounds. He will face six-time Resorters champion Steve Herzog on Friday in the semifinals.

Leland tried to get back in the match with a par win on No. 10, but Arnold again answered and he got it with a par right back. His par on 11 and birdie wins at 12 when Herzog opened and 14 helped him put the door with a bogey. the match away. But Herzog bounced back, winning on the Ryan def. Tessmer, 19th hole to keep his 4-3 title hopes alive. The defending champ
in this division, Tom Ryan, shot a 37 on the front nine in his match against Steve Tessmer on Thursday. That helped him build a 4-up lead by the turn that he never came close to relinquishing. Ryan got birdie wins at Nos. 1 and 6 around par wins at 3 and 9. He added another par win on hole 11 before Tessmer took his first of the day with a par at 12. It was too little, too late. Ryan did not give Tessmer an inch the rest of the way as his pars on the next three holes halved 13, 14 and 15 between the two as Ryan came one step closer to getting a chance at a second straight title.

Empanger has been on his game through two rounds of match play. He won an 8-7 contest on Wednesday and came right back with a 5-4 win over Randy Johnson on Thursday. Empanger took control from the start, shooting even-par 36 on the front nine and getting wins at holes 2-5 and another with birdie on 7. Johnson’s wins came at Nos. 8 and 12, but the damage had already been done. Empanger continued to play well on the back nine where he took 11 with a par, and then finished off the win with a birdie on the par-five 14th.
