A THRILLER TO FINISH THE DAY Jones storms back to win in 21 holes as semifinals are set By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com

T

he final four is set in the Men’s Championship at the 2022 Resorters, and the path to get there from the quarterfinals was not easy for the golfers left standing. One match went to 21 holes. Zak Jones won that one in a thriller that required him to take 17 and 18 to force a playoff. Two others came down to the 17th. Nick Jarrett out of Rochester was the most dominant on the day as he won a 4-3 final against North Dakota State University golfer Nate Deziel. In the end, Gavin Cronkhite and Ryan Conn join Jones and Jarrett in the semifinals when they tee off at 6:50 a.m. on Saturday. The winners play in the championship match with the two finalists from the Executive Division starting at 1 p.m. Here is a look at how all of the semi-finalists got to this point.

Jarrett def. Deziel, 4-3

Nate Deziel was fresh off a win over topseeded Nate Adams from Thursday, but he could not carry that momentum into his match with Jarrett. Jarrett was just too good on Friday. He shot a 3-under 33 on the front and then put up three more birdies on the back to finish at 6-under through the 15 holes played. Deziel never did take a hole. Jarrett struck first with a birdie on No. 3, and then added a par win at 4. Both players birdied the par-five sixth hole, but Jarrett’s par at No. 8 helped him build a 3-up advantage at the turn. Deziel was good himself on the back nine, but Jarrett never gave an inch. Deziel birdied holes 11 and 12 only to see Jarrett match him on both. The two players halved holes 9-14 before Jarrett put the finishing touches on the win. It came with a birdie win at 17 to cap off a bogey-free round.

Zak Jones gets a read on his line on the second hole during his Men’s Championship match in the quarterfinals on Aug. 5, 2022. Jones, out of the University of Texas Arlington, stormed back with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 17 and 18, and eventually won in 21 holes against third-seeded Gunnar Broin on Friday.

Cronkhite def. Johnson, 2-1 Gavin Cronkhite, a junior at NDSU, took down University of Minnesota golfer Lincoln Johnson of Chaska in a 2-1 final. It was a fast start that propelled him to

the win. Cronkhite got birdies on Nos. 1 and 2 that pushed him out to an early 2-up lead. He added par wins at 5 and 7 to take a 4-up advantage that he never relinquished. A birdie win at 11 helped him hold off a Johnson charge down the stretch

to advance to the semifinals.

Conn def. Cox, 2-1

Ryan Conn never folded after a slow start on Friday, and his perseverance paid off with a 2-1 win over Kyle Cox. Cox grabbed control

early, taking the first hole on No. 3 with a par and then getting birdie wins at Nos. 5 and 8. Cox was 3-under par at that point, but he ran into trouble on 9 with a double bogey. That

MEN’S EXECS

Four-time champ rolls on No. 2 seed is eliminated By Al Edenloff and Sam Stuve aedenloff@echopress.com Is the four-time champion in the Men’s Executive Division, Troy Johnson, unstoppable? The three competitors he’s knocked out so far might attest to that. He won those three matches, by fairly wide margins – 5-4, 4-3 and 8-7. Saturday, Johnson will tangle with Andrew Olson in the semifinals for a chance to play in the finals for the fifth straight time. In the other semifinal match, Joe Sauer takes on Chad Hacker. The semifinal will start from the No. 1 tee at 7 a.m. and the winners will advance to the final that starts at 1 p.m. and will be part of the foursome that includes the two Men’s Division finalists. Sauer def. Klein, 19 holes 18 holes just wasn’t enough to decide a winner between Joe Sauer, the No. 8 seed, and Geoff Klein, the No. 1 seed, as the two had to go to a playoff, which Sauer won. Klein, the runner-up in the 2020 Resorters Tournament, forced the playoff with a par (4) on the 16th hole and a birdie on the par-3 17th. Not much separated these two on Friday. The largest lead of the match was Sauer’s 2-up lead that he earned after an eagle on the par-5 12th and a birdie on the par-3 13th hole. On the front nine, Klein led first with a win on hole No. 2. Sauer answered swiftly with a birdie to win hole No. 3 and a par to win hole No. 4. Klein tied things once again by winning hole No. 5 with a par. And that’s where things stood until hole No. 12 and the ensuing finish.

Hacker def. Conder, 2-1

Chad Hacker, the No. 4 seed, made a late charge, winning three holes toward the end that proved too much for the No. 5 seed, Shay Conder, to overcome. Hacker jumped out to the first lead, winning No. 2 with par. After halving the next two holes with bogey, par, Hacker tacked on a bogey win on the 5th hole to go 2-up. Conder rallied with two consecutive birdies on Nos. 6 and 7 to square the match. Both golfers parred the next two holes to keep the match even at the turn. Hacker’s par on No. 11 put him out front again but Conder pulled off the same back-to-back birdie barrage, taking Nos. 11 and 12 to steal the lead. After settling for bogeys on No. 13, Hacker broke through in a big way – winning No. 14 with bogey, No. 15 with par and No. 16 with par to go 2-up. Pars on No. 17 ended the match in Hacker’s favor, 2-1.

Olson def. Hoops, 4-2

Andrew Olson, the 10th seed, pulled off an upset over the No. 2 seed, Bryan Hoops. The match was as tight as they get. They halved the first eight holes, matching pars on Nos. 1, 2, settling for double-bogeys on No. 3, tying Nos. 3 and 4 with pars, making birdies on No. 6, and hitting two more matching pars on

Andrew Olson watches his tee shot off of No. 2 at the Alexandria Golf Club during his Men’s Execs match in the quarterfinals on Aug. 5, 2022 at the Resorters. Olson won 4-2 over second-seeded Bryan Hoops to advance to the semifinals. Nos. 7 and 8. Olson finally ended the stalemate with a key birdie on the 9th hole. Hoops came right back with a par win on No. 10 to tie it, but Olson took the next two holes with par, birdie to go 2-up. After halving Nos. 13 and 14 with bogeys and pars, Olson sealed the deal with a birdie win on No. 15 and a par win on No. 16 to win it, 4-2.

Troy Johnson def. Nick Paulsen, 8-7

Troy Johnson of Maple Grove, who is vying for his fifth straight title in the division, steamrolled another opponent Friday, sealing his victory after just 11 holes. His opponent, Nick

Chad Hacker putts on the first hole during his quarterfinal match in the Men’s Executive Division on Aug. 5, 2022 at the Resorters. Hacker won a 2-1 match over Shay Conder to advance to the semifinals.

Paulsen, the No. 3 seed, ran into some trouble on the course with three bogeys and two double-bogeys. Johnson came out of the gates strong, winning the first five holes with a birdie followed

by three pars and a bogey. Paulsen stopped the streak by matching Johnson’s birdie on No. 6 but couldn’t match Johnson’s birdie on the No. 7 Minnesota green and found himself down by six. Johnson made another birdie on No. 9 to go 7-up at the turn.

Johnson ended the match with a par win on No. 10 and a tie on No. 11 for an 8-7 victory. He played nearly flawless golf and was 2-under-par after 11 holes. Although he’s the defending champion, Johnson decided to play a qualifying round and

shot a 73, which put him as the No. 6 seed. Since then, he’s posted three fairly easy victories – a 5-4 win over Breton Stout, followed by a 4-3 win over Daniel Klein and his 8-7 blowout on Friday. Sparked by a hole-in-one, top seed advances Esterline will face Larson in the final

for a 2-1 victory.

Larson def. Hacker, 4-2

By Al Edenloff aedenloff@echopress.com No. 1 seed Lunden Esterline will go up against the No. 2 seed, Carver Larson, with the Resorters Junior 13-15 title on the line Saturday. They each won hardfought matches in Friday’s semifinals. Esterline’s match against Carson Boe lasted 17 holes and included a hole-inone from Esterline on the Minnesota green, No. 7. Larson, meanwhile, needed 16 holes to knock off the defending Junior 10-12 Division champion and 14th seed, Will Hacker. Esterline hopes to repeat his 2020 championship run in the Junior 12-12 Division. Larson, meanwhile, hopes to bring home another Resorters trophy to match the Junior Division 10-12 title he won in 2019. The finalists will tee it up from No. 1 at 12:15 p.m. The division’s consolation finalists will round out the foursome. Here’s a recap of Friday’s semifinal matches:

Esterline

Larson

Esterline was able to surge into the lead with a bogey win on No. 3 and a par win on No. 5. Boe notched his first win with a par on the 9th hole but trailed by two at the turn. Boe made a match out of it, winning Nos. 10 and 11 with pars to draw even. After tying on the next two holes, Esterline made a clutch par on No. 14 to regain the lead. Both golfers swapped pars on Nos. 15 and 16 before Esterline put the match away with a par win on the par-3 17th

Larson built a lead on the front nine, getting a good start with a par win on the first hole. He followed that up with three big wins – a bogey on No. 3, a birdie on No. 7 and a par on No. 8 to go 4-up at the turn. Both golfers tied on the next three holes, going par, bogey, par. Hacker mounted a comeback with back-toback par wins on Nos. 13 and 14 to draw within two. But Carver wasn’t about to let the match slip away. He won No. 15 with birdie and nailed down a 4-2 win with a par on the 16th hole. JUNIOR 13-15 CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH, SATURDAY - 1st Tee 12:15 p.m. - Lunden Esterline vs. Carver Larson

WOMEN’S EXECUTIVE

Top two seeds go for all the marbles O’Donnell and Sullivan battled in the quarterfinals last year By Al Edenloff aedenloff@echopress.com The semi-finalist winners in the Resorters Women’s Executive Division made quick work of their matches Friday. Medalist Amanda O’Donnell defeated last year’s runner-up, Molly Baker, in 12 holes and the division’s No. 2 seed, Jodi (Krafka) Sullivan, who won the division in 2018, eliminated Caitlyn Cummings, the No. 6 seed, in 10 holes. This sets up a classic battle between the top two seeds of the division, O’Donnell and Sullivan. The two went head-tohead in the quarterfinals of last year’s tournament. Sullivan escaped with a hard-fought, 2-1 victory. They’ll tee it up for all the marbles Saturday afternoon, starting from the No. 1 tee at 12:30 p.m.

Sullivan

Here’s a look at Friday’s semifinal matches:

O’Donnell def. Baker, 7-6

O’Donnell’s birdie win on the first hole set the tone of her match against Baker. O’Donnell added a par win on No. 3 to go 2-up but Baker got on the board with a bogey win on No. 4. O’Donnell answered with a birdie on No. 5 to take a twohole lead. After they both halved No. 6 with pars, O’Donnell went on a tear, winning Nos. 7 (birdie), 8 (par), 10 (par), 11 (birdie) and 12 (par) for a 7-6 victory.

O’Donnell showed that her medalist round of 75 was no fluke. After 12 holes, she was 1-underpar. Her only miscues were a double-bogey on No. 4 and a bogey on No. 9. Otherwise, she made par or birdie on every hole.

Sullivan def. Cummings, 9-8

Cummmings had an off day and Sullivan capitalized on it, taking advantage of bogeys and double-bogeys to advance to the finals. Both golfers got off to a shaky start with bogeys on No. 1. After that, it was all Sullivan. She won the next nine holes with two birdies (Nos. 5 and 7), five pars (Nos. 2, 6, 8, 9 and 10) and two bogeys (Nos. 3 and 4). Sullivan ended the round at 1-over-par. allowed Conn to escape with a bogey win and head to the turn with a little momentum. Conn flipped a switch after that. He moved to within one after a birdie win at 11. Both players birdied the par-five 12th, and it was all Conn after that. He tied things up for the first time since hole two after getting a par win at 12. Cox opened the door with bogeys on Nos. 14 and 15, and Conn took advantage, sinking pars to complete the rally and put away the match. Conn entered match play as the 26th seed, but he has been impressive ever since. He won 5-4 in his opener, and then 4-3 in round two before his rally on Friday evening.

Conn overcame a threehole deficit on Friday to secure his spot in the Men's Championship Division semifinals with a 2-1 win. Friday to secure his spot in the semifinals. Jones, who will be a graduate student this fall, went out and took this win from Broin down the stretch. He birdied holes 17 and 18 to force a playoff. Jones then persevered through the three playoff

holes and got a par on No. 3 to take the match despite Broin shooting an impressive 5-under 31 on the back nine. Jones was 3-under on the day through regulation, carding a 34 on the back. Jones took his first lead with a birdie win at No. 9. Jones got into trouble

on the par-five 12th with a bogey that allowed Broin to even the match back up. Broin then got a par win at 13 and a birdie win at the par-five 14th. That moved him to 2-up and put all the pressure on Jones going into 17 after both players birdied 15 and parred 16. Jones delivered, getting the birdie at 17 to keep his hopes alive, and then doing the same at 18 to set up a dramatic finish on the third playoff hole. JUNIOR 10-12

Johnson, Buttweiler battle for their first title Birdies carry third seed in tight battle with Esterline By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com Garrison Johnson of Alexandria certainly does not seem to be flustered the deeper he gets into the Junior 10-12 Division at the Resorters this year. Here’s a look at Johnson’s week so far. An even-par 36 during qualifying to earn the top seed. That included birdies at holes 11 and 16. From there, it was on to match play on Monday where he made short work of his opener in a 5-4 final before beating ninth-seeded Ryker Thompson in a 3-1 match on Wednesday. Johnson was steady as ever in the semifinals on Friday morning. He beat 12th-seeded Nathan Bright in a 5-4 final. That sets him up for a chance to finish this week off with his first Resorters championship. To do so, he will need one more

win against third-seeded Henry Buttweiler. Here is a look at how both players reached the finals.

Johnson def. Bright, 5-4

Golfers in the Junior 10-12 Division play just nine holes in their matches, so Johnson’s two perfect 5-4 wins this week stand out. He simply makes an opponent beat him. Johnson won all five holes against Nathan Bright on Friday by parring all five. Bright had a good run this week as the 12th seed, winning two close matches in a 2-1 final over fifth-seeded Bennett Paulsen in the opener and then a 1-up battle with fourth-seed-

The matchup between the second and third seed in this division was a battle all morning on Friday. Bronx Esterline, the second seed, struck first when he parred No. 10 right off the bat. He played even with Buttweiler for three straight holes after that until Buttweiler got his first birdie of the day at the par-five 14th to pull even. Both players parred holes 15 and 16. The difference in the match was Buttweiler’s two birdies. His second one at the par-three 17th proved to be the winner. Esterline needed to take 18 to force a playoff, but both players parred, setting up a showdown between Buttweiler and Johnson for the championship on Saturday morning. Troy Johnson of Maple Grove, the 4-four-timerepeat champion in the Men’s Executive Division at the Resorters, also took advantage of his day off from playing at this year’s Resorters to play in the U.S. Mid-Amateur Qualifying tournament in Prior Lake on Aug. 2. Johnson almost matched Hanstad, finishing as the second alternate with a 1-under par 71. Johnson has made six appearances at the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship since 2006. He was once again in the running for a title at this year’s Resorters in the Men’s Execs field after rolling into the quarterfinals. Email Eric Morken at emorken@echopress.com.

Abrahamson, who won the 1999 Men’s Executive Championship, gave Lindberg a run for his money in their semifinal match on Friday with four playoff holes needed to decide a winner. After Lindberg had led by two holes with eight to go, Abrahamson won three straight holes to go 1-up. Lindberg tied the match with a win on the par 5 14th. These two traded wins on 16 and 17 with Abrahamson winning the par 4 16th and Lindberg winning the par 3 17th, which would force a playoff. Lindberg has gotten off to a good start in all four of his matches as he’s led after six holes in all of them and has led by more than one hole in all but one of those matches. Hole 17 has been kind to Lindberg as he has birdied it twice and has won it all three times he’s played it in match play. WOMEN’S

Eagle turns the tide in Carpenter’s win Skaar, Monty, Boraas join top seed in the semifinals By Eric Morken Alexandria Echo Press Top-seeded Emma Carpenter had a lot of respect for former University of Minnesota standout Samantha Sommers even before these two went headto-head in the Women’s Division quarterfinals on Friday afternoon. She left the match even more impressed. Carpenter, a current golfer for the Gophers, had to play as well as she has all week to beat Sommers in a 2-1 final. “It was super fun and a crazy day,” Carpenter said. “I had six birdies and an eagle, and I won on 17. If that doesn’t tell you it was a good match, I don’t know what does. She played for the Gophers, and she was a part of the team that competed at national championships. I knew she was a really good player.” Carpenter is playing at the Resorters for the first time, and she has a chance to finish off a memorable first impression on Saturday. She will face North Dakota State University junior Leah Skaar, who rolled in her semifinal match by a 6-5 score. “Taking it one hole at a time,” Carpenter said of her focus going into Saturday. “I feel like I did a good job of staying patient (on Friday) and not panicking. (Saturday), it’s just going to be about playing my game and staying patient. Even today, as well as I feel like I played, I still feel like I left some out there. It’s just having that confidence that even if I get down a hole or two, I can make some birdies and get them back.” On the bottom half of the bracket are a couple of talented younger golfers. Alexandria’s Hannah Boraas won 2-1 over MacKenzie Olsen of Upper Iowa. Stillwater’s

Caroline Monty knocked off defending champion Alayna Eldred by that same 2-1 final. Here is a look at how all four got here before they step to the first tee box at 7:10 a.m. on Saturday with a trip to the finals on the line.

Carpenter def. Sommers, 2-1

Carpenter birdied her first hole to take a quick 1-up lead before Sommers responded with a birdie and a par on Nos. 2 and 3 to grab her only lead of the day. It did not last long after Carpenter made the shot of her tournament so far on the par-four fifth hole. She had a strong wind blowing right to left that she compensated for as she perfectly placed her approach shot that spun into the cup from 131 yards out for eagle. “I kind of aimed right and tried to hit it with almost a little cut spin,” Carpenter said. “The wind just kind of helped it fall left, and then it spun back a foot or something into the hole. I needed it because she put it to like seven feet on that hole.” It was the turning point in Carpenter’s round. “That was to get the match back to all square. From then on, it was her and I getting birdies and pars,” she said. “I was 4-under on 17, and I believe she was proba-

It was not easy. It was stressful, but it was a great time. She’s a great person.” Carpenter followed up the win on 5 with a par win at 6. Her only bogey the rest of the day came on hole 9, and Sommers was quick to pounce on the opportunity with a par win. That took things to the turn all square. Sommers shot 2-under through seven holes on the back, but still could not steal enough wins. Carpenter won Nos. 11 and 14 with

birdies. Sommers got one back with a birdie win at 15, but a win for Carpenter on 17 ended the match at 2-1. “I had such a good time,” Carpenter said. “It’s days like these that make me want to keep competing. I look at her, she’s obviously an alumni and she’s still out here competing and giving me a heck of a match. I know I’m going to want to be the same way.”

Skaar def. Stockmoe, 6-5

Leah Skaar took control of her match against Alexandria’s Lauren Stockmoe early on by taking a 4-up lead into the turn. Skaar, a junior at North Dakota State University, got par wins right off the bat on holes 1 and 2. Both players shot 2-over par over the next three holes, but Skaar righted the ship with a birdie win at the par-five sixth. She added another win with par on hole 9 to take all the momentum to the back.

Stockmoe’s lone win of the match came with a birdie at 11. Skaar made sure it wasn’t enough. She was steady over the last four holes, taking 10 and 13 with par, and adding a birdie win at the par-five 12th hole to secure her spot in the semifinals.

Monty def. Eldred, 2-1

Caroline Monty just graduated from high school in Stillwater this past spring, and she has shown a lot of calm in tight matches this week. She was at it again on Friday, storming back from a strong three-hole stretch from two-time Resorters champ Alayna Eldred and winning 2-1. Monty was 2-up at the turn after shooting evenpar 37 on the front, but she ran into some trouble on holes 10-12. Two bogeys allowed Eldred to pull even with par wins, and a birdie by Eldred at the par-five 12th gave her a 1-up lead. Monty stayed the course. She came right back with a par win at 13, and then did the exact same on 14 and 15 when

Saturday, August 6, 2022 | 19

Eldred opened the door a bit with bogeys. That 2-up advantage is how things ended after both players parred holes 16 and 17.

Boraas def. Olsen, 2-1

Hannah Boraas will add to her Resorters title she won in the Junior Division a couple of years ago if she can finish off two more wins. Boraas took hole 17 with a par against MacKenzie Olsen to finish off her 2-1 win in the quarterfinals. Olsen led early by taking the first hole with a par, but Boraas struck right back with par wins at 2 and 5 and a birdie win on hole 3. Olsen stayed close with a couple of par wins at 7 and 9, but Boraas had an answer throughout the day. She won 10 with a birdie before Olsen took 11 and 12 with birdies of her own. Boraas again answered, this time with a par win at 13 to go 1-up. She never trailed again as the win at 17 sent her to the semifinals.

Caroline Monty launches a shot from the tee box towards the par 3 7th hole on Aug. 5, 2022, during her quarterfinal match. Monty, a Stillwater native who graduated from high school this past spring, got a 2-1 win over defending champion Alayna Eldred on Friday to advance to the semifinals in the Women's Division. GRAND MASTERS

Under pressure, Golden and Harris deliver Both are going for their first title in the Grand Master Division By Al Edenloff aedenloff@echopress.com Who will stand at the top of the Resorters Grand Masters Division this year? Dave Harris of Alexandria has a shot. He’d like to add a fourth Resorters title to his trophy case. He won the Men’s Senior Division in 2006 and 1998 and was the champion of the Masters Division in 2014. Harris is coming off a fresh 2-up victory over the division’s defending champion, Jerry Gruidl. But standing in Harris’ way is Mike Golden, the division’s medalist who qualified with an 81. Harris def. Gruidl, 2-up

In a battle between two Resorters legends, this time it was Harris who pulled off a big win, toppling Gruidl by taking the last three holes. Harris took the first lead in the match by winning No. 2 with birdie and No. 3 with par. Gruidl, who also has Men’s Division Resorters titles from 1977 and 1994, responded with back-to-back par wins on Nos. 5 and 6 to tie it. Harris won the next hole, the par-3 7th, with a par to regain the lead. Gruidl came back with a par win on the 9th hole to draw even. After Harris won No. 10 with par to take the lead for the third time, Gruidl got his game going. He won No. 12 with a birdie to tie it and moved into the lead with a par on the 13th hole. High seeds sweep the semifinals

Pelzel and Larson to tangle in final

By Al Edenloff aedenloff@echopress.com Upsets rocked the Men’s Regular first flight semifinals Friday. Both matches ended quickly, taking only 15 holes or less. The No. 8 seed, Cory Pelzel, eliminated the No. 5 seed, Luke Resler, 4-3, while the No. 7 seed, Riley Larson, knocked out the No. 3 seed, Logan DuBe, 6-5. Pelzel and Larson will square off Saturday, starting from the No. 1 tee at 8:10 a.m. Here’s a look at how they got into the finals yesterday:

Pelzel def. Resler, 4-3

The match was a rollercoaster ride on the front nine with a lot of ups and downs for both competitors. Pelzel grabbed the first lead, a par on No. 1, but Resler answered with back-toback birdies on Nos. 2 and 3 to steal the lead. Pelzel tied it up on the next hole with a par and

MASTERS

Herzog, Empanger to meet in battle of prior champs Both look for first Masters crown By Sam Stuve Alexandria Echo Press A first-time Men’s Masters champion will be crowned on Saturday. Top-seeded Steve Herzog of Alexandria and three-seeded Jon Empanger of Chaska will meet in Saturday’s finals in a battle of storied Resorters champions. Whoever wins will be adding to a jam packed trophy case from Resorters past. Herzog is a threetime Men’s Seniors titlist, two-time Men’s champion and one-time Men’s Executive winner. Empanger is also a three-time Men’s Seniors champion and is also a five-time Executive champion on top of that. To get to the finals, both of them had to get through some tough competition. Herzog had to get past three-time Men’s Seniors runner-up Jim Arnold, while Empanger had to out duke defending champion, Tom Ryan.

Herzog

Empanger

Herzog made some clutch shots in the final few holes to win. In his quarterfinal match on Thursday against Greg Mattson, Herzog won holes 15 and 16 to tie the match and he won a playoff hole to advance. Herzog’s last championship win came in 2019 when defeated Chris Haugen 2-1 in the Seniors championship.

Empanger def. Ryan, 5-4

A flurry of birdies guided Empanger to victory over Ryan, the No. 2 seed. Empanger birdied five times between holes 1 and 14. His birdie flurry started early, with one coming on the par-4 2nd

hole to go 2-up. Ryan had a birdie on the par-4 5th hole to trim his deficit in half. Empanger caught fire, starting on the par-4 9th hole, which he birdied to go 2-up heading to the back nine. He then birdied the par-4 11th, the par-3 13th and the par-4 14th, which helped him win, 5-4. Empanger has birdied holes 11 and 14 in back-to-back rounds. He’s also won hole 14 each time he’s played it in match play, along with one of the first two holes. 2011 was the last time Empanger won a title at the Resorters. That was his third straight Seniors title win in a row. Empanger finished runner-up to Haugen in the 2018 Seniors championships. Herzog def. Arnold, 2-1

Herzog and fifth-seeded Arnold went tip-for-tap with one another through 14 holes with neither giving too much to the other in terms of a strong lead on the scoreboard. But Herzog turned it on during the home stretch to win 2-1. He parred the par-4 15th and 16th holes to take a 2-up lead, which he held onto after tying Arnold on the par-3 17th. Friday was the second day in a row in which
