n Memorial Day, the day for honoring the men and women who have died while serving in the U.S. Military, the Alexandria area honors the fallen with parades and programs. Alexandria’s Memorial Day parade begins at 10 a.m. and participants in the parade will march down Broadway ending at Kinkead Cemetery for a Memorial Day service, which is set to begin at 11 a.m. Visit the Echo Press newspaper website closer to the event for the latest information at www.echopress.com.

emorial Day weekend is also the official beginning of summer, and Alexandria’s kickoff event is Ole Oppe Fest, featuring live music, food, activities, wing competition, beer garden and more. Ole Oppe Fest will be celebrated Friday-Saturday, May 28-30 on the shores of Lake Agnes, just north of downtown at Big Ole Park.
Dubbed Ole Oppe Fest (oppe means “up” in Norwegian), this event celebrated Big Ole’s new paint job and reinforced body. Celebration events that have been held in conjunction with the Big Ole celebration include car shows, axe throwing, a vendor fair, live music, wing competition and beer garden.
