For a great guest experience, try FOOD TRUCK CATERING When planning for a wedding, every couple hopes to provide their guests with a great reception experience, whether with elaborate meals, a relaxed, homelike environment or anything in between. One of the most popular ideas in recent years is a food truck wedding – an easy, doable option for almost any budget. Sounds crazy, right? But food trucks offer great food, a way to support local chefs, a way to try something new and a way to bring people together. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of food trucks operating in the U.S. nearly doubled from 2013 to 2018. Food trucks are so popular that FoodNetwork.com, one of the best known lifestyle networks, websites and magazines connecting viewers to the power and joy of food, has its own food truck show – The Great Food Truck Race.

From freshly caught seafood and gourmet burgers to ethnic and fusion cuisine to cupcakes and ice cream, there’s something for everyone’s taste to be found on a food truck. But, while it might be a fun option to try, it’s not for everyone. Here are a few things to consider before making a decision to host a food truck wedding.

cost

Don’t forget when comparing costs between a traditional caterer and a food truck that the food truck most likely won’t be all-inclusive, leaving the couple to provide rentals for tables, staffing, cleanup and even beverages or dessert services. If the food truck hired doesn’t normally work weddings, insurance may be a factor in case something goes wrong.

unique experience

A food truck will definitely provide a unique experience for guests, giving them a taste of favorite local foods. Couples can decide what food suits their style.

replaces kitchen space

If your venue doesn’t have a traditional kitchen for preparing food – such as an open air or garden space – a food truck is an excellent option.

longer wait times

A food truck means a waiting line since food is cooked to order, especially if the guest list is large. There are ways to allieve some of that time. Your vendor can limit the menu to just a few options and some may even have a buffet option. Available snacks at the tables can give guests something to nibble on while they wait for their turn at the truck.

permits

Each city and county has its own requirements for special events, parking and fire codes. Hiring a food truck without event experience means checking on local codes.

space for truck

If serving the reception from a food truck, you’ll need a large enough space to accomodate that truck near the guest tables so that guests won’t have to carry their food long distances. Keep these things in mind when deciding on whether or not to hire a food truck for your wedding.

Spice up your wedding with

variety pack

THE PERFECT SHOES Whether you go for glamor or a more creative look, shoes can make your outfit stand out. High heels, cowboy boots and tennis shoes are all great options for the big day. The most important thing, however, is comfort.

Choose your dress first. You’ll want to match the style of shoes to your dress. Don’t experiment with high heels. If you’re not used to wearing heels, don’t attempt to wear them at your wedding. There are many flat and wedge styles that make beautiful – and comfortable – bridal shoes.

Make sure they fit. The best time to shop for shoes is in the late afternoon. If they’re comfortable after a day of work, they’ll fit perfectly on your wedding day.

Let each person in the bridal party select the style of shoes that suits their personality. Each person is unique so let them shine!

Bring them to your dress fitting. If your dress is long, it’ll need to be adjusted to the height of your shoes. Break them in. Wear your shoes around the house to avoid any nasty surprises on the day of your wedding. If they’re tight or uncomfortable, bring them to a shoemaker to stretch them out a bit.

color and comfort

With so many colors and styles to choose from, tennis shoes could be the perfect pick for you. From traditional high-top canvas sneakers to glittery slip-ons, there’s a style of tennis shoe that fits every personality.

just a little crazy

Feeling just a little bit country? Head for the altar in a fashionable pair of cowboy boots. These day, boots come in many different colors and patterns. Pick one that speaks to you. Maybe you want to stand out from the crowd? Why not wear some strappy, colorful pumps?

color coordinated Add a little extra color to your wedding with matching shoes and socks for the men and women in the bridal party. The sky’s the limit!

10 The Wedding Guide Summer 2022

add some bling Maybe you love the look of a traditional heel like stilettos or peep-toe heels, but want a little more pizzazz. Why not add shoe

clips. Jeweled or faux flowers added to the fronts or even the heels of your shoes will add some sparkle as you walk down the aisle.

long-distance

A

fter a year of long-distance dating, Hannah Finne and Andy Erickson knew they had something special. The couple, who met through mutual friends, became engaged in May of 2020 and were married last August. The two reside in Alexandria where Hannah is a registered nurse at Alomere Health and Andy is the working capital manager at Geneva Capital.

love

where and how did you meet?

HANNAH: We met when I was still living in Rochester, MN. We met through mutual friends. Andy’s college roommate is actually from my hometown and is my childhood best friend’s older brother. I don’t know if I would necessarily say it was love at first sight, but I think we both knew that something was different when we first met.

what are some of your special memories about your time spent dating?

For the first year, we were longdistance, this definitely set a good base of communication and made us appreciate our time together more.

photos courtesy hailey anne photography of morris, mn

how and when did you get engaged?

We got engaged in May of 2020. We were on a walk near Brophy Park, made it to a little lookout where Andy placed a bandana on our dog that said “Please say yes!” and got down on his knee. Little did I know, Andy’s friends and old coworkers, Al and Celeste, were hiding out to capture our moment.

what was the most important aspect of the ceremony for you?

We spent a little more than a year planning the wedding and got married in August of 2021. The most important aspect of our ceremony to us was having it personalized to us and something that our guests would enjoy.

how did the pandemic affect your wedding?

The pandemic definitely made wedding planning interesting. It was a little nerve-wracking if everything was going to get shut down again or not. We did not have to make any postponements or limit our guest list. Our venue was very open and really all of it was outside so we were really hoping for a sunny day. My paternal grandmother and her husband were actually unable to come due to her testing positive for Covid-19 two days before the wedding, my aunt and cousins had been with her while she had symptoms too. Luckily they all received their negative results the morning of the wedding and were able to come. My uncle had ALS and was unable to make the trip so we made sure that we had him on video chat throughout the ceremony and reception so that he could be a part of our day still.

picked Adler Ranch because it’s such a unique and beautiful venue. The rustic barn venues have been popular venues the last few years but Alder Ranch takes everything a step further with all of their antiques around the entire venue.

did you make or have any special touches for your wedding?

I didn’t actually make anything but I got everything separately and put it all together. I got a lot of things from Facebook Marketplace, Etsy and Ling’s Moments and was able to pull everything together. We did a memory ladder which had pictures of all the people we loved that were no longer with us. This was special to know that they were with us in a different way.

where did you hold your wedding?

We had our wedding in Alexandria at Adler Ranch. We wanted to have our wedding in Alexandria since this is where we live now and so it was kind of in the middle for our family and friends to travel. Andy is from Bottineau, ND which is about six hours from Alexandria and Hannah is from the Rochester, MN area which is about a 3.5-hour drive from Alexandria. We Summer 2022 The Wedding Guide 13

give us a recap of your wedding

Our ceremony was nontraditional, we wanted something short and sweet. We had one of Andy’s good family friends officiate for us, which was special in itself but he was able to really personalize the ceremony for us. We did the signing of the marriage certificate, one of my good friends did this the year prior and I really liked it, and honestly, we probably would have forgotten to sign it after the ceremony if we hadn’t signed it during the ceremony.

what was the best memory of your ceremony?

One of my favorite things was being with my dad for a few moments while the wedding party was walking up. Andy and I decided to wait to see each other until the ceremony so leading up to that I was pretty nervous but as soon as I saw Andy all of that went away and I felt so much calmer.

what style of reception did you have?

Our reception style was much more casual rustic style. For our first dance song we used a version of Hey Ya! by The Blinks. We chose this because it’s different and fun. Andy is also a big fan of the series Scrubs. One of the characters in this show is the singer in this band and the song was featured in an episode of the show. Hannah’s favorite memory of the night was the last song of the dance. We had Pea by The Red Hot Chili Peppers play. Not many people know that song so it was fun to just dance and sing it with Andy. Say, “I do,” on the

SHOE

There’s so much that goes into a wedding that sometimes it’s easy to lose sight of the reason for your day – love. Let your loved one know how important they are by calling them on your wedding day, sending them a love note or giving a special gift. One touching trend these days is having the brides or grooms write a love note on the soles of each other’s shoes. Whether it’s a sonnet or something short and sweet, what better way to let your special someone – and your guests – know how you feel.

special memory

In Turkish weddings, the bride has all her single female friends write their names on the soles of her shoes. You could have each of your bridesmaids sign your shoes or write their wish for you. You could also have your shoes painted with “I do” or have a traditional poem inscribed on the bottom.

Is rain on your wedding day

good luck?

In different cultures, rain on your wedding day is considered good luck. Here are some of the reasons why.

How to handle rain on your WEDDING DAY Brides and grooms fear the prospect of rainy wedding days. But even couples who have contended with everything from a few drops to an all-out deluge on their wedding days look back fondly on the ceremony and reception. In fact, how couples handle any precipitation can affect how happy the festivities may be. Have a rainy day game plan. Rain affects outdoor weddings more than any other type of ceremony or reception. If the goal is to exchange vows outdoors, work with the venue to make this possible with a tent or gazebo. However, if the weather is especially foul and windy, move it indoors. Invest in golf umbrellas.

Couples who live in notoriously damp climates can purchase golf umbrellas, which tend to be larger than the average umbrella, and keep them stationed in decorated stands to ease transitions between wedding sites and keep everyone as dry as possible. Wear waterproof cosmetics. Women in the bridal party, including the bride, can ask their makeup artists to use durable, waterproof products. This can help salvage beautifully composed looks should some drops begin to fall. Know vendors’ rain policies. Some live musicians will not play in damp weather. Florists may need to make accommodations for arrangements

new start

Rain on your wedding day signifies cleansing and a new start – washing away the sadness or hard times of your past.

unity

As everyone knows, a wet knot is very difficult to untie, and rain signifies that your marriage will last since you are “tying the knot.”

fertility

Rain helps plants grow and rain on your wedding day signifies that children are in your future.

tears

Raindrops bring good luck as they symbolize the last tears that a bride will shed for the remainder of her life. blowing in the wind. Couples need to understand what they’re responsible for and what may be covered if a weather event occurs. Wedding insurance may help cover the costs of nonrefundable cancellations. Move past it quickly. It is okay to get upset if the weather turns for the worse. But don’t dwell on it. Guests will sense negative energy, and couples should set the tone of sticking it through despite a little adversity – which can be a good lesson for the marriage as well. Embrace the rain. While a couple probably won’t wish for rain, there are some benefits to overcast skies, say the wedding professionals at Brides magazine. Flowers are less likely to wilt in rainy conditions. In the absence of bright sunlight, outdoor photographs can really pop. Rain is romantic and may compel couples and their guests to cuddle close. Don’t let rain on a wedding day become a drag. With preparation and perspective, couples can handle rainy wedding days.

Take the hectic out of your

WEDDING DAY

Weddings are among the most complex events many people will ever plan. Couples often try to go the extra mile in an effort to make the day memorable for themselves and their guests. That pressure can make a wedding day feel a little frenzied. Thankfully, there are various ways to ensure the vibe of the big day is happy and not hectic.

hire a wedding planner/coordinator

Leaving the nitty gritty to a professional wedding planner takes a lot of pressure off of couples. The renowned wedding resource The Knot says wedding planners are clued into everything there is to know about a wedding and they can be tapped to take care of just about anything on a couples’ to-do list.

consider a package deal

All-inclusive resorts are popular vacation spots because variables like entertainment, lodging, food, drinks, and more is all taken care of, leaving vacationers with little to do other than show up and relax. Couples can apply that same approach on their wedding day. Host the ceremony and reception at the same site, which takes the potentially problematic issue of getting guests to and fro out of the equation. Some venues may even provide in-house vendors like photographers and florists. Such vendors’ familiarity with the venue reduces the risk of surprises that can derail wedding day schedules.

pick priorities

Avoid getting bogged down on a million details by making a list of your priorities when planning. Couples can revisit this list a couple of days before their wedding so they remember what’s most important to them on the big day. This refresher can ensure couples don’t get too concerned if minor issues arise during their big day, helping them remain calm and keeping a focus on all the fun to be had during the day. It’s easy for couples to feel a little overwhelmed on their wedding day. Some simple strategies can ensure they keep their focus on one another and their loved ones.

Save money and still have your

dream wedding Traditional weddings can be costly. Here are some ways to save money while still having the wedding of your dreams. Limit your guest list: only invite the people that matter to you. Avoid inviting distant relatives you never see. Find a beautiful location: art galleries and botanical gardens are venue options that won’t need extra decorations. Choose a restaurant: not only will the food be better, but you’ll also have all the tables, chairs and linens you need.

20 The Wedding Guide Summer 2022

Make your own wedding album: find a photographer that will give you all of the day’s pictures on a flash drive and use an online tool to create your own photo book. Only serve beer and wine: or if cocktails are your thing, create a signature drink to offer your guests. Get a deal on the dress: buy your dress at a sample sale, or consider renting or buying a used one. Minimize your florist bill: use candles as your centerpieces instead of flowers.

Involve your dog in your wedding If you’re getting married and want your pooch to be a part of the wedding, here are three ways you can incorporate your canine companion into the big day.

as a ring bearer

Place your wedding rings in a small box and attach it to your dog’s collar. During the ceremony, call your dog to the altar or have someone guide Fido up the aisle to present the rings.

as a guest

If some of your other guests have dogs, you may want to set up a fenced-in area where all the pooches can play to gether. However, it’s probably best to place this area away from the main party.

as a model

Pets are photogenic. Why not include your dog in your wedding photos? Your pup is sure to enjoy the time away from the party. Remember, your dog should look their best for your big day. Consider making an appointment with your pet’s groomer. Prepare a grab bag for your dog with their treats, bowls, toys, food and anything else you think they might need. It’s also a good idea to designate someone to take care of your pooch during the day’s events.

Summer 2022 The Wedding Guide 21

TIMELINE TIPS:

Factors to consider when planning your wedding The notion that ‘timing is everything’ is applicable in many situations, perhaps none more so than on a couple’s wedding day. Many couples spend months, if not years, planning their weddings in the hopes that all that hard work will ultimately result in a day they will cherish forever. The sheer volume of things to do on a wedding day can make couples feel overwhelmed. Those feelings can be overcome by emphasizing timing on the day of the wedding. Wedding day timelines will differ depending on variables that are unique to each couple’s wedding, but the following are some factors to consider as couples organize the big day.

Venue(s): The schedule couples adhere to on their wedding day will be greatly affected by their choice of venue. Does the venue have somewhere on premises for the couple and their party to get ready? Are the ceremony and reception being held at the same venue?

22 The Wedding Guide Summer 2022

Before creating a timeline, consider the location of the ceremony and reception venue(s) and the accommodations each provides. Getting to and from multiple facilities won’t be an issue if couples choose a multipurpose venue where they can get ready, tie the knot and dance the night away all in one place. Couples who will be moving from venue to venue throughout the day must build into their timelines the time it takes them and their party to get about.

Wedding party: The size of the wedding party also bears consideration when planning a wedding day timeline. Large parties will require more time to get ready, and that should be factored into couples’ timelines. Large parties also may be harder to corral and transport from place to place, so couples should build some extra time into their timelines to account for that. Small wedding parties can be easier to manage, so couples with small parties may be able to begin

their timelines a little later in the day than those with large wedding parties. Weather: Weather is the most unpredictable variable couples need to plan for on their wedding day. As the wedding day approaches, couples can monitor the day’s forecast and then make any necessary changes to account for inclement weather. Getting around in a rainstorm will likely take longer than moving about on a sunny day, so some minor tweaks to the timeline may be necessary if storms or another type of inclement weather is in the forecast. Couples can access wedding day timeline templates on various websites. But it’s important that couples remember that their weddings are unique, so online guidelines might not be realistic. A careful consideration of a handful of variables specific to couples’ weddings can help them craft timelines that make their big day go smoothly.

3 tools for keeping wedding guests

informed

Weddings give couples an opportunity to share the joy of joining their lives together with a host of friends and family members. Guests liven up the party and help make the celebration that much more memorable. No matter how big or how small the guest list, keeping guests informed of what’s happening is a courtesy couples can provide.

SAVE-THE-DATE ANNOUNCEMENTS Save-the-date announcements have become an increasingly popular component of wedding planning. Instead of waiting on the wedding invitation, savethe-date cards provide guests with an advanced advertisement of the celebration to come. According to the photo and invitation specialists at Shutterfly, it’s customary to send save-the-date notes around six months before the wedding. For a destination wedding, which will require extra travel plans, an eight- to 12-month advance can be helpful.

Save-the-date cards generally have basic information, including the wedding date and the venue.

WEDDING WEBSITE A wedding website is a versatile tool that can help answer questions that guests may have. It can spell out specifics, including dress code, whether children are invited, the names of wedding party participants, overnight accommodations, transportation providers, and even restaurants near the hotel for a quick bite between ceremony and reception. VIDEO CONFERENCING APPS Video conferencing applications like Facetime, Zoom and Microsoft Teams enable people involved in the planning process to routinely ‘gather’ and go over details about the wedding, helping to limit in-person meetings as much as possible. These apps also can prove invaluable when conferring with wedding vendors, such as florists or musicians.

You also can schedule smaller meetings with specific guests who may be playing key roles in the wedding, such as those giving speeches, doing readings, escorting guests, or serving in other capacities. Certain resources can help couples keep guests informed about what’s to come in regard to their weddings.

The benefits of using

local vendors Local vendors are a smart choice when planning your wedding ceremony and reception. Once you make the decision on where you will hold your wedding, you can begin to look at local vendors. Being familiar with the area, local vendors will be able to handle the tasks involved with the wedding without needing directions. Wedding photographers, for instance, will know the best places to stage photos, while other vendors most likely have preexisting relationships with representatives of venues, keeping your wedding day less stressful. Shopping local also ensures more personalized service, as well as more individualized attention, than you might find with larger retailers. Keeping your wedding local allows your vendors to meet with you more frequently to make sure that your wedding is the way you want it to be. It also makes dropping off deposits, attending meetings, and making fitting appointments easier.

Book a stylist early

A wedding is a tough time to experience a bad hair day. Clothing styles, time of day and weather all can dictate a wedding hairstyle, but ultimately one of the most important factors in a wedding hairstyle is finding a stylist who understands you and can exercise your vision. A patient, understanding stylist who is open to viewing different photographs and drawing inspiration from various places, as well as running through a few trial styles, can help brides (and grooms) look their best. In fact, trials are a must to ensure that a chosen style will work with your hair texture. If you plan to get your hair colored, professionals recommend doing so about three weeks in advance of the big day so it looks natural and any potential snafus can be remedied beforehand. Your stylist may suggest a light trim prior to the wedding so that the ends are fresh and healthy. And since you’re putting your faith in a qualified stylist, trust their expertise and vision. Keep an open mind to their suggestions. You may fall in love with one of the options you hadn’t considered.

diamond,

A the symbol of eternal love The joy of selecting wedding rings is as precious as the feelings that unite you. Because you will wear these rings for a very long time, it is normal that you pay special attention and invest time in their selection. Make sure that you deal with a reputable jeweler who guarantees the quality of the merchandise. Examine the warranty and after-sale service carefully. You should also insist on a professional evaluation of the ring and wedding bands you want to purchase. When it comes to engagement rings, diamonds dominate the selection. There are four key features to consider when appraising the diamond on your engagement ring: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight.

Because every diamond is unique, it is given as a symbol of precious and eternal love. Even though other precious stones are available, diamonds are the most popular gems for a wedding. Admittedly, this symbol of undying and eternal love possesses a mysterious splendor that is unique. This unbreakable, precious stone sparkles with a thousand points of light that dazzle the eyes and delight the heart. The quality of the gold, or silver, content in the rings is another important selection criterion. In addition, the style must suit your fingers: a delicate model for fine hands and a more elaborate style for stronger hands.

Maintaining your wedding jewelry The best way to maintain jewelry depends on the makeup of the rings. Gold rings without gemstones can be cleaned with soap and water. Prepare a solution of lukewarm water and mild dish soap in a small bowl. Soak for 20-30 minutes. Use a soft brush or cloth to clean the jewelry. Rinse under clean water.

Rings with diamonds can be treated with a soap-andwater solution or soaked in equal parts cold water and ammonia for half an hour then air dried. Ammonia can only be used with diamonds and not other gemstones. Maintaining jewelry also should include twice yearly visits to a jeweler.

Summer 2022 The Wedding Guide 25

Which

WEDDING STYLE Every wedding is different, even if many share some common components. As couples plan their weddings, learning about some popular wedding styles can help them create a ceremony that suits them.

classic wedding

Classic weddings are the storybook traditional weddings that many people dream about for years. Key elements include a tuxedo for the groom and a white gown for the bride. Formal attire is reserved for the rest of the wedding party. The ceremony is conducted in a place of worship before everyone retires to a fancy catering hall for the reception. Traditional weddings also may include the time-honored customs like toasts, cake cutting, bouquet toss, and parentchild dances.

beach wedding

Beach weddings often are casual, laid back affairs. Dresses may be less structured and flow with sea breezes, while guys may even don shorts with linen shirts or jackets. Guests can expect the party to be much more free-flowing and the traditions of classic weddings may not be part of the celebration.

bohemian wedding

Free-spirited individuals may dive head first into a bohemian style wedding. According to wedding planner David Tutera, a boho wedding is casual and comfortable. It tends to come off chic but appears that way with minimal effort. Decor is typically humble and blends harmoniously with nature. A boho wedding may take place outdoors or in another less traditional venue, such as a

farmhouse or botanical garden. Wedding party attire may be mismatched and showcase each person’s individual style.

modern wedding

Brides and grooms who crave contemporary and current trends may prefer a modern wedding. Graphic color schemes, clean lines and minimalistic flowers might be part of a modern wedding. Attire may be angular and edgy, and the venue may run the gamut from sleek museum to a city rooftop.

destination wedding

Couples who love to travel and don’t want to worry about the minutiae of

wedding planning may find a destination wedding is a good fit. Destination weddings last more than one day and focus on relaxation, activities and lots of fun. Destination weddings tend to be less formal and less traditional than classic weddings. Due to the remote locations, destination weddings also can be smaller and more intimate, as many invitees may be unable to attend. Yet those who can attend often get to enjoy tropical islands or mountain retreats. Wedding styles are as unique as the people getting married. Choosing a theme that has the right feeling can help couples make the most of their special days.

Things to consider when planning

destination weddings Wherever you decide to tie the knot, here are a few things to consider when planning your destination wedding.

package deal

Many resorts have begun to offer wedding packages that include complimentary services of an on-site wedding coordinator to take care of all the essentials – marriage license, cake, officiant – and take the stress off you. The coordinator can organize activities for your guests or arrange for spa services. If no complimentary coordinator is on site at your destination, you can hire a coordinator to take care of all the details and avoid unnecessary headaches.

not all can come

Don’t be surprised if some of your loved ones can’t make it to your wedding. While it may not be a problem for all of your guests, it’s important to understand that a jaunt to Europe, a week-long all-inclusive trip to the tropics or even a weekend in the next town over isn’t in everyone’s budget. People might find it hard to get

time off from work and older guests may have difficulty traveling.

remove stressful family situations

A smaller invitation list allows you to invite just your closest family and friends or no one at all, if that’s what you choose. You can avoid inviting those family members that no one can get along with.

long distance complications

Selecting a destination that doesn’t offer wedding services may leave you struggling through red tape to arrange wedding details long distance, especially if it is in a foreign country. Even another state may have different rules for getting a marriage license. Hiring a coordinator who specializes in destination weddings can help you navigate the hurdles that can come with the locale.

less expensive reception

Having a smaller guest list can mean spending less money than on a traditional reception near your home. One thing to remember, though, because the reception

might cost less, you still need to factor in the expenses of traveling and possibly paying for the guests’ hotel rooms, food and some other expenses. If money is a concern, look at countries that have a favorable exchange rate, or even domestic locations.

multi-day affair

Be sure to show your guests you appreciate them traveling to be with you by organizing a few group activities for them, either before or after the wedding. You can plan a welcome breakfast, for example, or an excursion to take in the local sights. Also, think about how you’ll transport wedding essentials to the destination. If you’re traveling by plane, it’s best to pack wedding attire, rings and gifts in your carry-on bag.

necktie

or a

What’s your style? You popped the question, got a yes, and now you’re planning every detail of your wedding day. Future husband – it’s time to think about what you’ll be wearing when you exchange your vows! The dilemma is quite real: will you choose a necktie or a bowtie to finish off your look? Here are some thoughts to help you make this important decision. The bowtie: a classic. You can’t go wrong with the traditional bowtie. Match it with your tuxedo for a sophisticated look, or dare to be different with a velvet, knit or wooden bowtie that matches your wedding’s

bowtie?

color scheme. Show stopping looks guaranteed in any case. The tie: a more relaxed option. Thinking of getting married in a suit and tie? Go for it! The good old necktie has become a popular option for the modern groom. From the distinguished traditional version to more avant-garde options, ties are available in endless patterns, colors and textures. You’re sure to find one that fits your personal style to a T. Have you decided yet? If you’re still on the fence, ask a stylist or knowledgeable salesperson for advice.

Non-floral

boutonnieres Traditionally at weddings, women wear corsages while the groom and other men sport floral boutonnieres. The people wearing them often include the groomsmen, the couple’s parents and grandparents and any other family members that the bride and groom want to honor. Here are some ways to put a fresh spin on the tradition. •Ornaments made of twigs: a shooting star, a heart or a simple wreath made of dried twigs would be eye-catching.

28 The Wedding Guide Summer 2022

•Feathers: they can be as colorful as flowers but are unexpected and whimsical. •Herbs and fruit: berries and herbs look elegant while still being fresh and green. •Colorful buttons: you can make unique boutonnieres and corsages with an assortment of buttons. •Wooden tees: if the bride and groom are avid golfers, tie a few colorful tees together with a bow.

rustic bouquets add natural flair

Couples opting to get back to basics, streamline their nuptials and create more intimate and less superficial affairs often gravitate toward rustic celebrations to showcase their ideals. Rustic weddings also may appeal to environmentalists and men and women who want their weddings to be as eco-friendly as possible. Rustic weddings may include those ceremonies and receptions that take place outdoors or in unconventional locations, such as barns, wineries, castles, or converted silos or town factories. In fact, Bridal Guide says that barn weddings have never been more popular – among both urban and rural couples alike. Coordinating a rustic wedding may mean letting go of perceived notions of how everything from food to favors to flowers should be. In fact, one way to describe rustic weddings – and

especially the floral arrangements that adorn them – is ‘purposely imperfect.’ Rustic wedding bouquets may seem like they were plucked right out of the garden or grabbed through a stroll in a meadow. They’re rarely symmetrical or feature the customary flowers of more formal wedding celebrations. When designing rustic bouquets, florists may keep the stems of wildflowers or other blooms untethered for a relaxed feel. Long stemmed arrangements are quite popular, and trends point toward bouquets that are loosely tied with raffia, twine, vines and other natural materials rather than more refined ribbon. Another way rustic bouquets set themselves apart is with the introduction of other elements into the arrangements. Not merely blooms and greenery, rustic pieces may feature twigs, vines, berries, scabiosa pods, ivy, and feathery ferns. The heights of elements in the bouquet

are varied, and the bouquets will not have an overly uniform shape. Rustic bouquets are far from pretentious, and brides shouldn’t feel that these bouquets are delicate or will fall apart when handled. When planning a rustic wedding, couples can work with their florists to create bouquets and arrangements that fit with their visions.

How to choose the perfect

WEDDING DRESS Choosing a wedding dress can be both exciting and nerve-racking. To help you create the look of your dreams, here are a few tips.

make a plan

Before you try on a single gown, make a list of the criteria you’re looking for in a wedding dress. Do you want a certain cut, style or length? Do you want to show off your shoulders or hourglass figure? Establishing some criteria will allow you to narrow down the choices.

try on sample gowns

The first step is to make your rounds to various gown shops and try on the samples they have available. Most sample sizes will not be the size you wear every day, so expect them to be ill-fitting. Do not be discouraged. Once a gown is chosen, the dress shop will take your measurements and order the gown according to the manufacturer’s sizing guide. Again, this can be shocking, since the size will likely be larger than what you

wear in street clothes. Some shops will also order a little larger to allow for adequate tailoring.

try different styles

After the first fitting, you may realize that the dresses that look good in pictures aren’t the right fit for your figure. Don’t worry, your consultant can suggest other styles until you find the dress of your dreams. Additionally, keep in mind that all wedding dresses need to be altered. Therefore, don’t be dissuaded if a dress is too long, short or loose.

use props

In addition to your list of criteria, bring along pictures of dresses to show to the bridal store consultant. They can use the information you provide to quickly find several different gowns for you to try. Whether you decide to buy or rent a wedding dress, choose the one that ma kes you feel most beautiful. For inspiration, visit your local bridal stores.
