WELCOME Dear Friends, Welcome to Orchestra Hall and to another landmark season for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra! This season promises worldclass performances with top guest artists working alongside our internationally renowned Music Director and the members of our amazing and talented orchestra. Our Winter Music Festival tradition enters its fourth year with Mozart Festival in January. A theme—Gershwin and His Children—weaves itself through the season, investigating the merging of orchestral music and popular culture that became synonymous with the American composer. Along with several other area organizations and countless individuals, the DSO will participate in Detroit 67: Looking Back to Move Forward, premiering a work by Fred A. & Barbara M. Erb Jazz Creative Chair Terence Blanchard marking the 50th anniversary of the tumultuous summer of 1967. And of course we are honored to welcome dozens of inimitable soloists and conductors: Louis Langrée, Emanuel Ax, Cho-Liang Lin, Andrey Boreyko, Sharon Isbin, Brandford Marsalis, Ashley Brown, and so many others.

We are very focused on Detroit at this time as we consider the role, the reach, and the responsibility of the DSO in our evolving community. We know orchestras can have an impact beyond the confines of the concert hall. We also know that music and the arts contribute to socioeconomic change and social progress. The DSO, as one of Detroit’s anchor cultural institutions, feels a strong obligation to serve our city, our region, and our world in increasingly creative, responsible, and thoughtful ways. We look forward to engaging you in this quest for ideas around ways we can deepen and broaden our impact and provide service to all.

The broad topic of the role an orchestra plays in its community continues to anchor discussions on a national level. To that end, we are honored to be the official host orchestra for the League of American Orchestras conference, June 6-8, 2017. Over 1,000 participants from around the globe will experience the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center, meet and hear our great orchestra, and explore and gain a deeper understanding of this amazing city of Detroit. Together we will be examining where orchestras are in the space of community and societal change—and where we aspire to be and how we get there.

BEHIND THE BATON Leonard Slatkin

Internationally acclaimed conductor Leonard Slatkin is Music Director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) and the Orchestre National de Lyon (ONL). He also maintains a rigorous schedule of guest conducting and is active as a composer, author, and educator.

During the 2016-17 season—in addition to his regular duties in Detroit and Lyon—he will return to St. Louis, tour the U.S. and Europe with the ONL, conduct overseas with the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, Verdi Orchestra in Milan, and San Carlo Theatre Orchestra in Naples, and serve as chairman of the jury and conductor of the 2017 Cliburn Competition.

Slatkin’s more than 100 recordings have garnered seven Grammy awards and 64 nominations. His recent Naxos recordings include works by Saint-Saëns, Ravel, and Berlioz (with the ONL) and music by Copland, Rachmaninov, Borzova, McTee, and John Williams (with the DSO). In addition, he has recorded the complete Brahms, Beethoven, and Tchaikovsky symphonies with the DSO (available online as digital downloads).

A recipient of the prestigious National Medal of Arts, Slatkin also holds the rank of Chevalier in the French Legion of Honor. He has received Austria’s Decoration of Honor in Silver, the League of American Orchestras’ Gold Baton Award, and the 2013 ASCAP Deems Taylor Special Recognition Award for his book, Conducting Business.

Slatkin has conducted virtually all of the leading orchestras in the world. As Music Director, he has held posts with the New Orleans, St. Louis, and National symphony orchestras, and he was Chief Conductor of 6

the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He has served as Principal Guest Conductor of London’s Philharmonia and Royal Philharmonic, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, and the Minnesota Orchestra. For more information, visit leonardslatkin.com.

Jeff Tyzik

Grammy Award winner Jeff Tyzik is one of America’s most innovative and sought-after pops conductors. Tyzik is recognized for his brilliant arrangements, original programming, and engaging rapport with audiences of all ages. Tyzik holds The Dot and Paul Mason Principal Pops Conductor’s Podium at the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and also serves as Principal Pops Conductor of the Seattle Symphony, the Detroit Symphony, the Oregon Symphony, and The Florida Orchestra. This season, Tyzik will celebrate his 23rd season as Principal Pops Conductor of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.

In May 2007, the Harmonia Mundi label released his recording of works by Gershwin with pianist Jon Nakamatsu and the RPO, which stayed in the Top 10 on the Billboard classical chart for over three months. Alex Ross of The New Yorker called it “one of the snappiest Gershwin discs in years.”

Committed to performing music of all genres, Tyzik has collaborated with such diverse artists as Megan Hilty, Wynonna Judd, Tony Bennett, Art Garfunkel, Marilyn Horne, Mark O’Connor, Doc Severinsen, John Pizzarelli, and more.

S

ometimes a little sibling rivalry can be a good thing. Eric Nowlin knew he wanted to learn music when his older brother started playing the cello—“and of course I wanted to play bass,” Nowlin recalls, “because it was bigger!”

The bass didn’t turn out to be for him, but Eric did stay in the string family—starting

on the violin at age 7, adding on the viola four years later, and settling on the viola permanently in college. Formerly Associate Principal Viola for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Nowlin is excited to return to his native U.S. and join the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

“I think Detroit is a really interesting city… it doesn’t feel like every other place out there, it has its own unique flavor,” says Nowlin.

“It’s very exciting to be part of an arts scene, but also more generally an atmosphere of people taking chances and trying things out.”

Nowlin grew up in Missouri and Wisconsin, though he has a few Michigan connections.

His wife grew up in Kalamazoo, and he spent his last two years of high school at 8

the Interlochen Arts Academy before leaving the Midwest for Juilliard, where he received both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees as a scholarship student of Samuel Rhodes.

He has performed solo engagements with the Springfield Symphony, Santa Cruz Symphony, Peninsula Symphony, and the Kumamoto Symphony in Japan, and has served as guest principal viola with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Metropolis Ensemble, and Cleveland’s Citymusic as well as substitute viola with the New York Philharmonic. He is also a member of the New Orford String Quartet, one of Canada’s premier chamber ensembles.

A friend of DSO Principal Cello Wei Yu (James C. Gordon Chair) and Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik, Nowlin has admired the DSO from afar for years. He loves the orchestra’s willingness to try new things, from new music to new media. “I have colleagues in other orchestras who are very jealous of Live from Orchestra Hall,” Nowlin says, referring to the DSO’s free webcast series. “It’s forward-looking and indicative of how much enthusiasm and energy there is at the DSO.” After accepting the Principal Viola position and rehearsing with his string colleagues for the first time, Nowlin knew he was in the right place. “I felt a collaborative energy coming from the other string principals. That’s how you make music.”

Asked about his interests outside of music, Nowlin laughs. “I used to have hobbies until I had children!” The father of two did reveal that he enjoys (or once enjoyed) reading, hiking, and playing squash.

ERIC NOWLIN WILL MAKE HIS DSO SOLO DEBUT ON JANUARY 19 AND 20, 2017, for the first program of the Mozart Festival.

He will take on Mozart’s Sinfonia concertante for Violin, Viola, and Orchestra in E-flat major alongside Concertmaster Yoonshin Song (Katherine Tuck Chair).

That’s The Cube as we see it and we hope you’ll join us in celebrating throughout the season.

We are honored to have Peter and Julie as members of the DSO family, and they have both been visionaries in our constant evaluation of the space that we occupy here in Midtown and how we can best use it to be more relevant, welcoming, and artistically groundbreaking.

During my tenure at the DSO, I’ve had the great fortune to collaborate with forward-thinking leaders who challenge the team to consider what’s next? I believe that now is the best possible time to reimagine this unique space and its role in contributing to the cultural fabric of our city. GERSHWIN and His Children

The Influence of Popular Culture on Classical Music

F

ebruary 24, 1924. World War I was over. The stock market had not yet collapsed.

Americans were looking for something different.

On this day, they got it.

The history of Rhapsody GERSHWIN in Blue is well documented. Written quickly and somewhat improvised on the spot, George Gershwin’s contribution to “An Experiment in Modern Music” changed the very nature of how classical music was perceived. Aeolian Hall was the scene of a very long program, featuring no less than 26 separate musical selections. It was Paul Whiteman’s idea to find a way to make jazz, and other vernacular music of the time, part of the collective conscience of the listener.

Although the Rhapsody was not well received by the critics, over a period of three years the work was performed

by Whiteman 84 times, and its recording had sold more than a million copies. This was not just an isolated, one-off experience. That original concert opened a floodgate of new compositional thought. It was the time of Stravinsky, Ravel, Shostakovich and

so many others. Each of those composers, and many more, took to the new craze and tried to find ways to incorporate music in popular idioms into their own compositions.

Over the course of the 2016-2017 Season, the DSO will feature many of the groundbreaking pieces that took the mainstream of the popular culture and changed the way all of us perceive classical music. We will see how other cultures reacted and incorporated their own brand of local music into the concert hall. There will be premieres that promise to be exciting and bold.

And we will learn that Gershwin was not really the first composer to utilize these elements.

During the season we will try to understand why the “jazz age” existed and will consider its lasting impact on society today. Long before the term “crossover” came into use in music, composers were taking their audiences on new paths, combining various aesthetics to produce a new genre in music. I have been looking forward to presenting this trip for quite some time and hope that you will join me. It promises to be a journey well worth taking.

Coffee Express has roasted specialty coffees for coffee houses and retailers since 1982, and is generously partnering with the DSO to elevate the quality of coffee and service for our patrons this season.

Tom Isaia, President of Coffee Express Roasting Company, has been a classical subscriber since 2001. As a music lover, Tom values the role the arts play in our community and joined the DSO Business Alliance—a leading ensemble of corporate partners who value the DSO’s impact in the community—in 2014. Just last winter, Tom and the DSO team worked creatively to surprise and delight our patrons during the Brahms Festival with sponsored coffee in the Herman & Sharon Frankel Donor Lounge, and offered unique Brahms-branded whole bean bags for purchase in the gift shop.

Valet parking is available for most concerts for $12, with vehicle drop-off and pick-up on Parsons Street. Donor valet and pick-up (patrons who give $7,500) is available at the stage door behind the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center. Parking is available for $8 in the Orchestra Place Parking Structure located on Parsons Street, with overflow in a nearby DSO lot. Handicap accessible parking is also available. Other parking options include Woodward Gardens on Woodward Avenue near Alexandrine Street and Wayne State University Parking near Whole Foods on John R Street.

Handicap parking is available in the Orchestra Place Parking Structure for patrons with applicable permits. There are elevators, barrier-free restrooms, and accessible seating in all areas of the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center. Security personnel are available at the entrances to help patrons requiring extra assistance in and out of vehicles. Hearing assistance devices are also available. HOUSE AND SEATING POLICIES

All patrons must have a ticket to attend concerts at the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center, including children. The Max opens two hours prior to most DSO concerts.

Most Classical Series concerts feature free pre-concert talks or performances in Orchestra Hall for all ticket holders. The DSO makes every attempt to begin concerts on time. In deference to the comfort and listening pleasure of the audience, latecomers will be seated at an appropriate pause in the music at the discretion of the house staff. Patrons who leave the hall before or during a piece will be reseated after the piece is completed.

Latecomers may watch the performance on closed circuit television in the Atrium.

Please silence cell phones, alarms and other electronic devices. Patrons should speak to the House Manager to make special arrangements to receive emergency phone calls during a performance.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION PROCEDURE

In the event of an emergency, locate the nearest exit sign and listen for announcements on the PA system. Please follow the directions of Orchestra Hall ushers and staff. For safety reasons, everyone should leave in an orderly fashion and please remain calm. Guests with disabilities will be escorted to the nearest exits by an usher. Elevators will not operate during an evacuation. Once you exit the building, proceed as far away from the premises as possible. Thank you for being prepared to respond calmly in the event of an emergency.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

PARTNERING WITH PNC’S GROW UP GREAT INITIATIVE AND THE BLACKWELL INSTITUTE Last spring, the DSO went to students and students went to the DSO. In a unique partnership with Detroit Public Schools Community District’s Blackwell Institute and PNC Bank’s Grow Up Great Initiative, we were able to bring music to preschool children right in their classrooms—and invite them to the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center for a Tiny Tots concert.

Over two weeks in April, about 40 Blackwell Institute students were visited

by DSO staff and musicians and given an opportunity to get hands-on with some instruments, including violin, viola, guitar, bass, flute, horn, and oboe. We also provided teachers with curriculum ideas to prepare for the DSO visits and keep the music going with interactive learning experiences in the classroom.

“Exposure and experiences are both necessary to spark the passion for music that leads to transformational impact on the healthy development of young people,” says Anne Parsons, DSO President and CEO. “When instruments are held and teams are created, responsibility, discipline, and acumen soar!”

Visits like these are a true privilege for our community-supported orchestra. We know that music education empowers our children to be more creative, productive, sensitive, and confident. From a modest athome hobby to passionate involvement in an 20

J

un Märkl has long been known as a highly respected interpreter of the core Germanic repertoire from both the symphonic and operatic traditions, and more recently for his refined and idiomatic explorations of the French impressionists. His longstanding relationships at the state operas of Vienna, Berlin, Munich, and Semperoper Dresden have in recent years been complemented by his music directorships of the Orchestre National de Lyon (2005-2011) and MDR Symphony Orchestra Leipzig (to 2012) and his present status as Chief Conductor of the Basque National Orchestra.

In 2012 Märkl was honored by the French Ministry of Culture with the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in recognition of his achievements in Lyon, notably his hugely successful nine-disc Debussy cycle with the orchestra on Naxos.

The Naxos label has also released live recordings of Märkl with the Orchestre National de Lyon performing the music of Strauss and Beethoven, as well as 2014’s two-disc Toshio Hosokawa: Orchestral Works, Vol. 1 with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Other recordings include music of Strauss, Beethoven, Brahms, Schoenberg, and Mahler for Altus, and the complete Schumann symphonies live with the NHK Symphony for Exton.

Born in Munich, Märkl’s (German) father was a distinguished Concertmaster and his (Japanese) mother a solo pianist. Märkl studied

violin, piano, and conducting at the Musikhochschule in Hannover, going on to study with Sergiu Celibidache in Munich and with Gustav Meier in Michigan. In 1986 he won the conducting competition of the Deutsche Musikrat and a year later won a scholarship from the Boston Symphony Orchestra to study at Tanglewood with Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa. Soon afterwards he had a string of appointments in European opera houses followed by his first music directorships at the Staatstheater in Saarbrücken (1991-1994) and at the Mannheim Nationaltheater (1994-2000).

irill Gerstein has proven to be one of today’s most intriguing and versatile musicians. His early training and experience in jazz has contributed an important element to his interpretive style, inspiring an energetic and expressive musical personality that distinguishes his playing.

Gerstein is the sixth recipient of the prestigious Gilmore Artist Award, presented every four years to an exceptional pianist who — regardless of age or nationality — possesses broad and profound musicianship and charisma and who desires and can sustain a career as a major international concert artist. Since receiving the award in 2010, Mr. Gerstein has shared his prize through the commissioning of boundary-crossing works

by Timo Andres, Chick Corea, Alexander Goehr, Oliver Knussen, and Brad Mehldau, with additional commissions scheduled for future seasons.

Gerstein performs Liszt’s Transcendental Études on a new recording released by Myrios Classics. His other solo recordings for the label include 2014’s Imaginary Pictures, comprising Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and Schumann’s Carnaval, as well as a recording of works by Schumann, Liszt, and Oliver Knussen released in 2010.

Born in 1979 in Voronezh, Russia, Mr. Gerstein studied piano at a music school for gifted children. After coming to the attention of vibraphonist Gary Burton, who was performing at a music

festival in Europe, Gerstein came to the United States at 14 to study jazz piano as the youngest student ever to attend Boston’s Berklee College of Music. After completing his studies in three years and following his second

summer at the Boston University program at Tanglewood, Gerstein turned his focus to classical music and moved to New York City to attend the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with Solomon Mikowsky. An American citizen since 2003, Gerstein now divides his time between the United States and Germany.

chaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto was an instant hit, receiving tremendous applause and acclaim following its Boston premiere. The renowned pianist and conductor Hans von Bülow was the soloist, and he telegraphed the composer personally to share the good news. It is not difficult to understand why this piece met with immediate public acceptance and remains so popular today. It is chock-full of tuneful melodies (even for the master tunesmith Tchaikovsky), the voice of the piano is bold and fluid, and the work is cast in large contours, creating a sweeping, majestic effect.

Kirill Gerstein will play the “1879 version” of the First Piano Concerto. This version is the one that Tchaikovsky himself conducted during his only visit to the United States, for the opening of Carnegie Hall in 1891.

The so-called “third version” of the concerto — the one most commonly performed today — is quite unlike the 1879 version, as it was edited and published posthumously, likely without any input or authorization from Tchaikovsky while he was alive.

Gerstein wrote about the differences

between these two versions in his 2015 New York Review of Books article “The Real Tchaikovsky:” “Comparing the 1879 version with the posthumous one, I find the editorial changes in the third version add a superficial brilliance to the piece, while at the same time detracting from its genuine musical character. Many examples of differing dynamics, articulations, and tempo indications in Tchaikovsky’s [1879] version point to a more lyrical, almost Schumannesque conception of the concerto. The arpeggiated chords and softer dynamics in the opening do not threaten to overpower the theme in the strings and allow the melody more metric flexibility and differentiation. Restoring the measures traditionally cut in the middle section of the finale enables us to hear harmonically and contrapuntally adventurous combination of several motivic strands. The extended middle section allows for an introduction and deeper immersion in a new mood. In the posthumous version, this section of the finale is so short that the new mood introduced always seemed a jarring miscalculation. It would now appear that this miscalculation was not the author’s, but this editor’s.”

The DSO most recently performed Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto in February 2015 during the 2015 Tchaikovsky Festival, with Leonard Slatkin conducting and Olga Kern on the piano. The DSO first performed the work at a similarly all-Tchaikovsky concert in January 1916, with Weston Gales conducting and Kathryn Goodson on the piano.

y 1943, four years had passed since Béla Bartók fled his warthreatened Hungary for the United States. Those four years were not kind to him: he knew little English, he was falling into poverty for lack of longterm employment, and he was in the beginning stages of leukemia (which would ultimately claim his life two years later). Friends heard of Bartók’s plight and began to commission works that became some of his final masterpieces. Serge Koussevitzky visited Bartók in a New York hospital with a $1,000 commission for a new orchestral piece, which would become the Concerto for Orchestra.

Bartók composed the work between August 15 and October 8, 1943, at a sanitarium in upstate New York while recuperating from the initial phases of his illness. Koussevitzky conducted the premiere with the Boston Symphony December 1, 1944, and the acclaim it received suddenly brought the ailing composer fame at the very end of his life.

Though the Concerto for Orchestra has certain traits that recall symphonic

forms, the idea of a work featuring many different orchestral soloists has its origins in certain baroque ensemble concertos dating back to the early 18th century. And while this orchestral concerto is harmonically far more transparent than Bartók’s music of the 1920s and early 1930s, it is imbued with thematic and rhythmic traits he developed over his lifetime. A short, mysterious introduction is followed by three main themes in the opening movement — an urgent, thrusting theme in the strings, an almost static theme in the woodwinds, and a commanding theme that rises fugally through various sections of the brass choir. All three are explored during a brisk development, and the first and third themes are restated before the movement ends abruptly.

The celebrated “Game of the Pairs” comes next, successively featuring pairs of instruments in the woodwind and brass sections in lighthearted duets. The third movement is one of Bartók’s many mysterious “night music” pieces, recalling thematic motives from the introduction to the first movement in an eerie, exotic orchestral setting. The fourth movement opens with a quaint modal melody in the oboe, but the music gradually dissolves into a trio section, full of raucously trilling trumpets and slithering trombone glissandos. The lengthy finale picks up the energy of the opening movement, gathering it into a grand, brilliant climax.

profiles BOB BERNHARDT

B

ob Bernhardt is Musical Director Emeritus and Principal Pops Conductor of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera, where he served as Music Director and Conductor for 19 seasons.

Concurrently, Bernhardt is in his 18th year as Principal Pops Conductor of the Louisville Orchestra and was recently named Principal Pops Conductor of the Grand Rapids Symphony. He is also an Artist-in-Residence at Lee University and conductor of the Lee Symphony. A lover of all genres of music, he is equally at home in symphonic, operatic, pops, and educational performances.

Bernhardt made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1978 and his Boston Pops debut in 1992, at the personal invitation of John Williams. He has been a frequent guest conductor at the Boston Pops in the nearly 25 years since, and returns to the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra for the 10th

consecutive year as conductor of their Symphony Under the Sky Festival.

Bernhardt has recorded for Vanguard, First Edition, Carlton Classics, and RPO. A lover of opera, he has conducted staged productions of Don Giovanni, La Traviata, Rigoletto, La Bohème, Il Trovatore, The Flying Dutchman, The Marriage of Figaro, The Magic Flute, Carmen, Tosca, and many more, as well as numerous Gilbert and Sullivan operettas and the musical My Fair Lady.

Born in Rochester, NY, Bernhardt holds BERNHARDT a Master’s Degree with Honors from the University of Southern California School of Music, where he studied with Daniel Lewis. He was a Phi Beta Kappa, summa cum laude graduate of Union College, where he was also an Academic All-American Baseball Player and captain of the school’s soccer team. He and his wife, Nora, live in Signal Mountain, TN.

A

s the winner of competitions sponsored by the National Federation of Music Clubs, Metropolitan Opera, New York University, Gerda Lissner Foundation, Downbeat Magazine, and Connecticut Opera Guild, Mela Dailey has command of both her instrument and the stage. She has received recognition in a wide variety of musical genres including opera, oratorio, art song, musical theater, vocal jazz, gospel, country, and popular music.

Dailey’s professional debut took place in 2003 at Carnegie Hall with the Grammy nominated Conspirare Company of Voices directed by Craig Hella Johnson, a group with whom she also records for the Harmonia Mundi label. She has also recorded a solo album, Shelter, with cellist Scott Kluksdahl and pianist Rick Rowley on Pierian.

Passionate about many charities and causes, Dailey has raised over $100,000 for groups and causes in her native Austin, TX, including Life Works, Austin Lyric Opera, GLBT Alliance, and many more. In November 2011, she headlined the Survivors Brunch Concert for The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

Since 2015 Dailey has hosted a radio show on Austin’s KMFA called Icons of Broadway, which spotlights iconic performers and personalities who have defined classic American musical theater. Each show also features Dailey and special guest performers treating

listeners to great Broadway songs recorded live in the KMFA studios.

Dailey is also Artistic Director of Life in the City, a United Methodist Church in Austin, and was a past lecturer in vocal technique for the Department of Theatre and Dance at the University of Texas.

B

erklee-trained arranger/conductor Brent Havens has written music for orchestras, feature films, and virtually every kind of television. His TV work includes movies for networks such as ABC, CBS, and ABC Family Channel Network, commercials, sports music for networks such as ESPN, and even cartoons. Havens has also worked with the Doobie Brothers and the Milwaukee Symphony, arranging and conducting the combined group for Harley Davidson’s 100th Anniversary HAVENS Birthday Party Finale attended by over 150,000 fans. He has worked with some of the world’s greatest orchestras—including the Royal Philharmonic in London, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Houston Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, Dallas Symphony, Fort Worth Symphony, Nashville Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, and countless others. In 2013 Havens conducted the

Malaysian Philharmonic for the Music of Michael Jackson, and he returned to Kuala Lumpur in 2014 with the Music of Led Zeppelin and 2015 with the Music of Queen.

Havens recently completed the score for Quo Vadis, a Premier Pictures remake of the 1956 gladiator film. In 2013 he worked with the Baltimore Symphony and the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens to arrange and produce the music for the Thanksgiving Day halftime show between the Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers, adapting both classical music and rock songs into a single four minute show. Havens is Arranger/Guest Conductor for 14 symphonic rock programs, celebrating the music of Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Pink Floyd, The Eagles, Michael Jackson, The Who, Whitney Houston, The Rolling Stones, U2, Journey, Elton John, and David Bowie. Havens also premiered a full orchestral show for Lou Gramm, the voice of Foreigner, with Lou singing out front.

B

rody Dolyniuk remembers mimicking voices even as a child, listening to old records and tapes.

He is a gifted, self-taught musician, capable of playing several instruments, with a particular knack for capturing the voices and mannerisms of classic characters from music, TV, and movies.

His first professional gigs were at piano bars in several U.S. cities, where he learned to charm audiences and expand his musical repertoire. With a longing to perform the music of the many rock bands that inspired him, Brody assembled Yellow Brick Road, unquestionably Las Vegas’ most successful classic rock band. Since 1997, Yellow Brick Road has reshaped the casino entertainment scene by bringing a rock concert atmosphere to showrooms previously reserved for Top-40-style lounge acts. Along the way, Brody has made numerous radio and TV appearances and

earned a spot in the finals of two national singing competitions, and even self-produced several large rock production-style shows utilizing multimedia, lasers, comedy, and special effects.

Brody has lent his vocal talents by singing several tracks on the hit video games Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and Konami’s Rock Revolution.

In addition to Journey, Brody provides lead vocals for The Music of Queen, The Music of The Who, The Music of The Rolling Stones, The Music of U2, and The Music of David Bowie. He is also developing his own production, called DOLYNIUK Symphonic Rockshow.

Now residing in Southern California, Brody continues to tour, as well as perform as a producer and session musician.

THE DSO’S FREE EDUCATIONAL HD WEBCAST SERIES Live from Orchestra Hall: Classroom Edition returned to schools on Thursday, November 3.

Students in K-8 classrooms were able to tune into the Educational Concert Series program Musical Heroes, a concert exploring heroes in all their forms, from Superman to Beethoven, Shostakovich, and more. Since its groundbreaking debut in 2014, the Live from Orchestra Hall: Classroom Edition webcast series has grown to reach tens of thousands of local, national, and international students.

It starts with ACCESSIBILITY...

LAST FALL, THE DSO OPENED ITS FIRST REHEARSAL of the season to students with varying abilities and special needs from the Glen Peters School of the Macomb Intermediate School District. One student, a young man named Connor, was invited to the stage to conduct the orchestra. At first he was shy, hunched and clutching a security pillow; but when the musicians reacted to his downbeat and began to play, everything changed—he grinned, standing up straight, and the music changed everything.

Connor was invited back this fall, along with several students with special needs from Stoney Creek High School. There was no shyness this year.

When it was time to conduct, Connor hurried to the stage, tapped the podium with his baton, and got to work, with the kind of smile on his face that only music can bring.

NOTABLE PROJECT SUPPORT The Detroit Symphony Orchestra acknowledges the following partners for their support of exceptional projects, partnerships, and performances that boldly advance the DSO’s mission to be a leader in the world of classical music.

The Eugene and Marcia Applebaum Family Foundation helped the DSO expand our partnership with our neighbors at Wayne State University, providing access to DSO Replay for students, exhibiting works from the WSU Art Collection, and creating the Applebaum Fellowship program.

The Arab American National Museum partnered with the DSO to present the 24th annual Concert of Colors, a five-day festival uniting metro Detroit’s diverse communities and ethnic groups by presenting musical acts from around the world.

Mr. and Mrs. Lee Barthel established a maintenance fund, supporting capital improvements which generate long-term savings for the DSO - including essential improvements to the exterior masonry of Orchestra Hall.

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation made a gift to support the production of a video that chronicles the DSO’s digital journey and celebrates how people across the world experience the DSO. The National Endowment for the Arts funded an educational expansion of DSO Replay - the online archive for past webcast performances - which will include the creation of additional web-only content, artist interviews, behindthe-scenes features, specialized search functions and more.

New Music USA and the League of American Orchestras brought our composer-in-residence, Gabriela Lena Frank, to Detroit through their Music Alive program as a part of their ongoing support of orchestra efforts to promote and present new music.

Tom Isaia, President of Coffee Express Roasting Company, has been a classical subscriber since 2001. As a music lover, Tom values the role the arts play in our community and joined the DSO Business Alliance—a leading ensemble of corporate partners who value the DSO’s impact in the community—in 2014.
