Hey everyone! This edition might just qualify as my largest issue thus far. This month we feature the event Thereafter on the cover (which opens on August 17, 2017). It is a shopping and sales, theater and music event, celebrating humanity in a postapocalyptic world. I have had the pleasure these past few months organizing it with Del, as well as Kess as our PR/Marketing guru with Sady assisting. Our team is rounded off with Mocha as our blogger manager and Jessyca Teardrop as our sim visualist and all round go to girl. We’ve also had unKindness provide new builds for the sim, and the sim looks amazing! We have twenty events planned: ten DJ sets, six live singers and four fashion theater shows. I’m especially excited for fashion theater, as the production will bring to life the Taming of the Shrew but set in a post-apocalyptic world. I’ve had the pleasure to work with a few of the ECLIPSE Models who have taken the leap into theater production with this project. I am very grateful especially to Miele Tarantal for the script and story-telling and Wicca Merlin for all the things. Not only is Thereafter featured on the cover, but we showcase five of our participating brands with Gild, Lybra, MINA Hair and the Forge in fashion spreads and Consignment in an article. We’ve also featured two of our live singers and a DJ, as well. Because of these special features, we have skipped our monthly “Through the Lens” and “Trending Now” pictorial spreads, but we’ll be back again next month with them. In recent issues, I’ve introduced new monthly features in the hopes of being a true reflection of the lifestyle and culture of Second Life. This month I introduce “On the Rise,” where we showcase the newest and best trends, projects, etc to hit the grid. We kick it off with PocketGacha, a definitely new and innovative way to approach gachas. I sincerely hope you enjoy this issue, and Happy Readings!

When Robert Frost wrote “Some say the world will end in fire, some say in ice,” he was underestimating the possibilities. While today’s news is full of the fire and fury of nuclear annihilation, last week there were stories of ancient bodies exposed by melting glaciers and the danger of deadly dormant viruses released from the permafrost. Space gives us all sorts of options, alien invasion, solar flares, undetectable gamma ray bursts that would cook the atmosphere in a flash, an asteroid inexorably coming our way. Don’t forget there are rogue black holes and the freakish “collapse of the vacuum.” Back down to earth, there is the sooner-orlater likelihood of flood-basalt volcanism, eruptions of volcanoes poisoning the atmosphere with chlorine gas, starving the people, and darkening the skies for years. We manufacture our own destruction with climate change, biosystem collapse, biotech disasters, nano-microbe releases and the “grey goo problem”, and then, of course, there’s the Rapture and those who are left behind. With so many options, it’s nearly a certainty that sooner or later one of them is bound to happen, which is why we might as well enjoy it with a celebration of the culture and fashions of Thereafter.

Page 28 | ECLIPSE August 2017

ECLIPSE August 2017 | Page 29

Thereafter will open soon, on August 17th and continue for ten days, closing on the 27th. During that time, not only will Second Life® residents be able to shop for the fashions, furnishings, and accessories for fashionable post-apocalyptic survival, they will also be treated to music and theater, including a production of The Taming of the Shrew who survived any and all of the twenty-odd options Robert Frost left out of his poem. Thereafter is organized by Trouble Dethly and Delicate Flower (awylder1) with Kess Crystal managing public relations. ECLIPSE Magazine interviewed Trouble and Del to learn more about the event and what ideas and skills they bring to its fruition. Trouble has produced several Fashion Weeks for Penumbra, but as he put it, “It got boring and antiquated.” Del’s experience comes from what you might call, the opposite side of events, that of the consumer — her Seraphim blog that she co-owns with Heidi Halberstadt is the number one sales and event blog. “I think I’ve been on the other side of it for so long - promoting,

Page 30 | ECLIPSE August 2017

marketing, assisting, watching, learning….I guess I felt the time was right. I mentioned it to Trouble once and he was on board, and we just went from there.” Kess, who was featured in the August 2016 issue of ECLIPSE Magazine, has worked for many events over the years, including One Billion Rising, the international first and second life day of awareness of issues around violence against women. Trouble expanded on how Thereafter came to be, “I have wanted to try something with the concept of fashion theater and a dedicated shopping event for a few months now. Del and I have a great working dynamic. Among other things, we’ve worked together on Spotlight Magazine previously and currently with the Blogger & Vlogger Network. Plus, Del knows a thing or two about events, and the idea of Thereafter just formed. With that, for those other projects, we also worked with Kess, so bringing her on board was another natural transition. We all work well together and have our own strengths, so we each bring something special to the table.”

ECLIPSE August 2017 | Page 31

Del agrees, noting that the two of them wanted “to take an adventure into event planning.” Trouble’s Penumbra/Eclipse experience and her Seraphim experience are completely different lenses through which to look at events. She explained, “We thought bringing these two worlds together would be pretty epic. So together we came up with a concept for a sales event that celebrates music and theater through a series of productions. Trouble really likes the post-apoc genre and I am a big Shakespeare fan, so we again brought these two concepts together and are presenting several scenes of a post-apocalyptic version of Taming of the Shrew.”

Page 32 | ECLIPSE August 2017

It seemed only natural to ask Trouble and Del how they expect the world to end. Trouble’s original idea, conceived when they were in the early planning stages, involved “a cheeto, a penchant for easily triggered twitter fingers, North Korea and long range nuclear missiles with the aftermath twenty years later.” That’s uncomfortably close to reality. Instead, he proffers two scenarios, “In my apocalypse the world will end because old men have created a war, and the rest of the world suffers as cannon fodder. Or, the aliens that created us as a science experiment decide it’s a failure and BOOM they end the project.” Del is more optimistic, hoping the world does not end at all, “but if it absolutely

*had* to, it would probably be some sort of contagion that couldn’t be controlled. Not a zombie apocalypse, just a mass infection that moved faster than science could to come up with some kind of prevention. The only survivors would be those people we all consider wackos with their underground bunkers and their 40,000 pounds of spam so they can outlive the incubation period.” Trouble joined Second Life’s Teen Grid in 2008 after hearing about it from a friend whose school had a sim there. “It wasn’t until I was 18 and transferred to the main grid that I realized how vast and limitless SL could be...but what keeps me? There’s a certain beauty to this virtual world, where the only limitations placed on you are the

ones you place on yourself. With all the content 100% user created, it is a world made for dreamers, and I feel that this world and really any world should be built on a foundation of those dreams.” Del joined in 2010 and focuses more on what keeps her here than what brought her here. “It’s really my friends. I have been very lucky to have developed friendships that have transcended SL with people who I love very much in my RL now. Unfortunately distance is a factor, so SL continues to serve as a place we can continue to connect on a regular basis.” Friendship is integral to Trouble as well, “Then, there is the social aspect. I have made friends, lost some, but the friendships I have now? They keep me in Second Life too.” ECLIPSE August 2017 | Page 33

Page 34 | ECLIPSE August 2017

Events have become increasingly important to Second Life commerce. Del believes events are what has kept the SL® economy chugging along, though she emphasizes that it is not just shopping events that matter, “but events of all types — gatherings — people with shared interests. We come together for a variety of reasons, each bringing different skills and abilities. The ability for each SLer to create their own environment and experience is incredibly valuable. Sharing that experience with like-minded residents is what it is all about. And hey, if you can make a couple bucks doing all that, why not?” Trouble initially thought of events as a marketing tool, a group of designers releasing exclusive items in a location, outsourcing their marketing to the event team, with some cross-marketing by designers adding synergy. A win — win — win situation for designers, shoppers, and event organizers. But even seeing all that marketing potential, he did not imagine events would overtake SL commerce to the degree it has today. But Thereafter is not just a marketing tool. With two to three entertainment events each and every day of the event, it’s about community as well as commerce. As Del puts it, “This is more than just another sales event. Thereafter is going to be an experience. We have some of the top designers in this genre sponsoring and designing for this event. The very best in musicians and DJs will be participating in the event as well as our fashion theater that will be based on an post-apocalyptic interpretation of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew. This has never been done before, and we are super excited to bring it to everyone on the grid.” Trouble is even more ambitious in scope, “I want people to know that while it is certainly a shopping/sales event, it is also a celebration of humanity in a post-apocalyptic world.” If role-playing sims in Second Life are anything to go by, life after the apocalypse is a widely shared fantasy obsession. We have always sought the new frontier, imagined terra incognita, and really, what terra can be more incognita than terra postquam Apocalypsis — a world as yet unseen by anyone. The dramatic power of catastrophe merged with the fantastical possibilities of the unknown and the glory of a new beginning. It offers so many choices, as Trouble elaborated, “Words like upheaval,

ECLIPSE August 2017 | Page 35

Page 36 | ECLIPSE August 2017

desperate, mayhem, survival and wasteland come to mind… but also questions like, “What does it mean to be human?” How do you rebuild society?” and “Do you learn from our mistakes?” Del believes the popularity of post-apocalyptic imaginings is pretty normal. “The idea of an apocalypse is certainly nothing new, and as humans we often wonder “what if” about a myriad of concepts and ideas that we cannot quite create ourselves. I think that added fear of the state of the world right now….economically, politically, environmentally….I think people are more scared.” Since Thereafter is more than a commercial event, not only will people come to shop, many will come for the one and two-hour long entertainment events. They hope by scheduling several productions of the play, people will get a chance to see it even if the sim is full for one showing, they will get in for a subsequent performance. While performances may draw more people during those times, that element is integral to the event. “From a cultural perspective, I feel the theater and music part of Thereafter gives it more of a community feel. With a post-apocalyptic themed event, I feel that underneath the desperation, mayhem and the efforts to rebuild society, there is the idea of hope that perhaps next time we will do better. What better way to capture the best of humanity then to focus on community with theater and music? Logistically, each scheduled event is only 1 to 2 hours long. I anticipate the first few days will be difficult, but we will endure.”

ECLIPSE August 2017 | Page 37

While Del notes the post-apocalypitc world may lack electricity and radio stations so there won’t be soundtrack and while Trouble imagines the post-apoc soundtrack would be the karaoke songs folks have already memorized, Thereafter must be powered by solar batteries because there will be entertainment. There will be many DJ’s broadcasting during the event including Obcene Bordiga, Briony, Ziekling Bunnyhug, Coremax, Static Ghost, and Jessyca Teardrop. There will also be live music performances by Rickylivemusic, Amforte Clarity, NaughtyName, TwinGhost Ronas, Rara Destiny, and more. There will also be four performances of a post-apoc The Taming of the Shrew. There are more events in SL than there are days, so standing out from the crowd is not easy. But if careful planning, attention to detail, a clear aesthetic and finely-tuned marketing plan can create success, Thereafter will be a huge success. Trouble listed the benchmarks he will use to evaluate the event, “We have an amazing group of sponsors and an extraordinary line-up of content creators. I supposed I would measure success with the content creators being infinitely happy with sales, the fashion theater production and music events bringing in a large audience and the fun factor, of course. I refuse to do anything in SL, if the pleasure derived does not eclipse the work required.” Del is confident of success because she is confident in her team. “Success depends on the people involved. Hands down. People are the number one reason for successful events and the number one reason for events that fail. Planning requires a lot of people coordinating a variety of moving pieces. It takes a lot of time, a lot of energy, and a metric ton of dedication. Finding the right people with the right level of passion and commitment is key.” Thereafter’s sim and stalls, carts, and stage will be designed by Jamie Rozenberg and Poe Cross of unKindness whose store was featured in the July 2017 issue of ECLIPSE Magazine. According to Trouble, “Kess Crystal actually brought us all together, and I am all the more excited for the event because of it. The actual laying out of the space and landscaping will be done mostly by the talented Jessyca Teardrop. As for what it will look like? The end of the world!” And what would the chic post-apocalypista wear? You have to go to Thereafter to find out. Page 38 | ECLIPSE August 2017

Consignment - Final Days Hideout - Thereafter EXCLUSIVE

ECLIPSE August 2017 | Page 81

Bohemian, modern, rustic, and elegant are some of the adjectives that come to mind f at first glance at Consignment, a furniture store, owned by Wavie Haller. Consignment is set on a desert sim with the walkway being lined by the front panel of a gas pumps. Over to one side of the store are the gachas set in old air pumps, on the opposite side of the store is where the outside furniture can be found, and the containers are used to hold the indoor furniture. Haller came onto the grid in 2006 after watching a program on the news that showed the creative aspect of Second Life® among other things. Haller came onto the grid not Like most of us, he arrived not knowing how to create anything nor having created on any virtual platform before. Originally he planned to conquer the boat-building market. However, at that time all creators had to work with were prims, flexi items and legacy layers for clothes or tattoos. Distracted by all the creative opportunities Haller put aside building boats. One of the first things he made was a shirt using a template from Robin (Sojourner) Wood’s and the shirt said: “Save the Orangutans” on the back, as Second Life’s newest citizen decided it was his duty to spread the word about conservation for the endangered animal. Soon after he discovered there wasn’t many options for men’s clothing, so he launched his clothing line Valiant and he had a small following for his men’s clothes including shoes.

Page 82 | ECLIPSE August 2017

ECLIPSE August 2017 | Page 83

Haller at one point had another store, called Entente, specializing, only in textures. When mesh came onto the grid in 2012, the endless creative possibilities of mesh excited Haller. Before he knew it he was studying online tutorials on how to make mesh products in Maya, and eventually he procured Z-Brush. With time and practice, the once difficult design process to make mesh became easier. With the introduction of mesh more designers entered the marketplace creating more competition. This made earning money for Second Life creations harder. “The competition is great because there is an amazing amount of talent out there. I see what other people make and it makes me strive to learn new things and produce a higher quality product. I am also

Page 84 | ECLIPSE August 2017

able to churn out more and more products, which helps me improve my skills through constant practice,” commented Haller. Even though he doesn’t consider himself a very creative person watching TV shows like “Tiny Houses” and “American Pickers” gave rise to Haller creating his furniture brand Consignment featuring vintage Americana from the 1940s – 1960s that he saw on those shows. This influenced him to hunt for more ideas on Pinterest and Google as he was visualizing items he wanted to create for Second Life. He loves the vintage cars, gas pumps, and diners. ”I dream of the day I can drive through America on Route 66 in an old station wagon.I am Scottish. These types of nostalgia are just not found here. That’s probably a big reason I love it so much,” said Haller.

ECLIPSE August 2017 | Page 85

Page 86 | ECLIPSE August 2017

Among the many items Haller has created are vintage trucks for cuddling in outside with lights hanging from them. Add a roaring fire to create the feeling of being transported to a 1960s outside party. There is another old truck that is a part of an outdoor movie theatre set, reminiscent of the old ones that people in America visited. Windmills and a water tower can be found adorning the outside furniture for sale for that Americana country feel to any rustic setting. There are gas pumps of different shapes and sizes. Vintage signs for eating or pointing in a direction are placed all over the store. The front end of an old car was used to make a singles or couples seating sofa, while the back end of that old car was made into a cooler for refreshments. Haller has used a rowboat to make an indoor and outdoor sofa. There is even the back of an old pickup made into a bed for sale along with an Elvis sign. In the gachas section of Consignment, an Open Road collection consisting of a full set of Route 66 items including an old trailer, pink flamingos, a Route 66 sign, a map of America, a bobblehead president, ice chests, lawn chairs, post cards, and a vintage radio. There is an old vintage drivable truck collection in many different colors. There is a vintage convertible car and a complete motorcycle repair garage collection.Among the items in the gacha section of the store is a collection of vintage vans built for cuddling. There are even signs of Haller being a fan of the Walking Dead as there are zombie heads in an aquarium among the Halloween decor in the gacha section of the store.

ECLIPSE August 2017 | Page 87

Consignment products can be found at some of the most well known sales events across the grid such as The Arcade Gacha Event , FaMESHed, Collabor88, and The Liaison Collaborative. August 17,2017 Haller ‘s store, Consignment, will be part of a new event called Thereafter with some post-apocalyptic decor. Joining along with stores such as CerberusXing, Death Row Designs, The Forge, Modulus, Unkindness, and Zibska.Thereafter will be a theatre, music, and sales event celebrating society in a post-apocalyptic world.

Page 88 | ECLIPSE August 2017

Future projects for Haller include: a couples’ cuddle silo, vintage pop culture hang out and a cinema skybox. He would also like to make more trucks but is reluctant because there are already a few people can buy. To this day Haller still has many half done boats and parts sitting in his inventory. Perhaps they will be one day on his list of designs for Consignment. Click here to teleport to Consignment. Check out Consignment on Marketplace.

jasmyn roecastle

I

t was in the 1930’s when the term ‘disk jockey’ first came into play with the world’s first DJ dance party thrown by Jimmy Savile in 1943. A lot has changed in the world of music since Jimmy, who played jazz music for his guests, and started using multiple turntables to keep the music in continuous play. In today’s world, there are good parties and there are amazing parties. The only difference being the power of the DJ! Disk Jockeys in Second Life® have become just as valuable, if not more so. With so many clubs being built while others close, the strength of a DJ’s musical prowess can literally make or break any venue. There is a science behind the music, and only the gifted have mastered the melodic formula. From the very beginning of Jasmyn Roecastle’s Second Life existence, she gravitated to rock clubs just to listen to other DJs. Through her time visiting and mingling, she began to take an interest into the inner workings of the SL® entertainment business. She became a host, and eventually started asking questions about the technicalities of DJing. Two of her DJ friends, Jamie Oakley and Tdubs Skytower, showed her the ropes and offered good advice to get her started! Jasmyn’s SL career has been diverse and busy! She has transformed from noobie host to full-fledged club owner. She also owns a gesture store, Snark n Stuff Gestures. She dabbled in clothing design, but felt as though she had been limited to texturing templates. Like many of us, she continues to be in awe of original mesh designers and creators. Rock music, though, has always been her main focus. Working in clubs has given her opportunities to meet people from all over the world and to engage in sharing or learning about the diverse interests, tastes, and experiences they bring to the table. For many years she had enough flexibility in her real-world job to enjoy an active virtual life, it became harder two years ago. “I had to step away from being a part of a well-established, successful rock club, Exodus Rock Club owned by Kess Crystal, where I’d worked my way up the ranks from host and DJ to host manager to DJ manager to general manager to coowner. Now it’s summer, and my real world job schedule seems more forgiving again. Of course, when you stop logging in as often or working as much, you lose touch with many people, so now I feel I’m sort of starting over, building The Twisted Cork out of just a small group of people who love to laugh, rock out, and support each other.” Asking a successful DJ to pick her top five favorite songs is like asking a librarian to pick a favorite book. For Jasmyn, her favorites change with the seasons, with new releases, with moods, and so on. Seether is one of her top bands, though, so right now she has their cover of Thrice’s “Honey” on heavy rotation. Other current faves are In This Moment’s “Roots”, Bring Me ECLIPSE August 2017 | Page 129

the Horizon’s “Blasphemy”, Missio’s “Middle Finger” and Highly Suspect’s “Little One”. All time faves (because she can’t just list those five--no way!) include tons of tracks by Godsmack, Three Days Grace, Halestorm, Shinedown and You Me at Six. She cut herself off from listing more for the sake of brevity. When asked about her current events she adds, “We have one or two gigs a day at the Cork, and the start times do vary. Our VIP group is good for the daily heads-up. For those who like to plan in advance, the weekly schedule is in the info-giver poster in the club. Also, we post a weekly line up on Facebook each Monday.” Her worst DJ experiences have been random griefers. Most that come to the club are there to do what we love or to unwind from real life stresses.. “I don’t think I’ll ever understand why someone gets a thrill out of randomly impeding that process when there’s been no provocation whatsover,” she puzzles sternly. Happily, this is much rarer than the experiences that bring her joy. For Jasmyn, the best experiences are developing lasting friendships with intelligent, witty people who enjoy her playlist! When she’s not DJ’ing, she can most likely be found chatting, shopping, making gestures, or playing games at the Twisted Cork courtyard. “I’d be remiss if I didn’t share information about my staff at the Twisted Cork. I won’t list them all individually, but I will share that they all have many years of experience at DJ’ing and hosting, absolutely enjoy chatting, and would love to have you come by to find the one who matches your musical tastes and humor! They’re twisted, but fun!” How can you not want to go check ‘em out! Want to keep Up with Jasmyn and her twisted crew? Check out the links below and dare to go get Twisted! usic is an art form like no other. The right songs can put a spring in our step or hold us in our melancholy. They can also bring on memories that takes us through emotional minefields. A once treasured song of new romance could later become one of deep despair. Songs can remind us of better times of childhood innocence, have us chair dancing to get through the work day, or brighten our spirits when the world threatens to drag us down. If they are strong enough, some songs can make us cry, make us angry, make our souls bleed with emotions put into words that we cannot express on our own. Even with the right words strung together through melodic rhythms, none of them mean a thing without the right voice to carry them from our ears to our hearts. For the Second Life® singer, performance is more than just singing the words. It’s about having the ability to take someone else’s lyrics and making them your own without losing the integrity of the emotion behind them. It can be a daunting task that not all who can sing can master. Rara Destiny is one such artist who has been able to use her natural abilities to reach out to audiences and hold them captive and wanting more. She started singing in cast rooms on Skype, a place where people would take turns singing. A few of the people Rara had come to know ventured into Second Life and convinced her to join as well. One of them even tricked her into doing her first gig. Rara was teleported to a venue, introduced to the owner, and was told to start singing in five minutes. “I cursed at the poor people a lot, but I managed to get through the time without dying. At the time I only knew five chords and four songs, but that was the beginning. Nine and a half years later, I am still doing it,” she recalls fondly. Rara considers her SL® career to be very fortunate. She credits her success to her loyal fans. “ I have some very loyal people who seem to never get sick of my nonsense, and keep coming back again and again to hear me sing. Also, some truly lovely venue owners who have me play regularly.” She thinks singing in SL is a privilege, but it’s also just loads of fun for her. While she feels committed to doing her very best, and being respectful of the time and effort everyone involved puts in, she tries really hard not to take it all too seriously. “I’m just a woman in the burbs of Australia who can strum some chords and hold a tune, and I am grateful and surprised every time people turn up to listen to me,” she adds. Six months before joining SL, Rara bought herself a guitar, and taught herself how to play using chord charts on the internet. In the beginning, she was terrified, but soon found an ample supply of people that took her under their wings to help her hone her talents that would soon lead to her own gigs. ECLIPSE August 2017 | Page 133

Page 134 | ECLIPSE August 2017

Rara’s current top five songs to sing are “Warm Whispers” by Missy Higgins, “Feeling Good” by Nina Simone, “Royals” by Lorde, “No Diggity” by Blackstreet, and “Into Dust” by Mazzy Star. At this time, Rara has no interest in social media. “This is where everyone will groan and roll their eyes at me. I don’t really do social media. I have a SoundCloud, but only because I was nagged into submission to get one. Otherwise, Facebook is the devil incarnate, Instawhatnow?, and possibly millions of other platforms I don’t even know exist.” With that in mind, make sure to find her in the Events category in the Second Life Search tab under LIve Music. She also has a group and a subscribo that she sends notices through to remind people of the two to four weekly events she’s involved in. “Second Life definitely is somewhere where you can try new things and discover talents you never knew you had,”she admits. For anyone fortunate enough to have heard her sing, you’ll be grateful for Rara’s curiosity of exploration into this world. If you haven’t had a chance to hear her yet, do so. Let Rara’s Destiny help to shape your own.

hereafter has a full line up of twenty events scheduled comprising of six live musicians, four fashion theater shows and ten live DJ sets. One of the participating live singers is the talented TwinGhost Ronas. As an American singer songwriter hailing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he delivers eclectic, soulful songs with a voice that hits straight to the heart of listeners. He shares with ECLIPSE Magazine, how he became a Second Life® live singer, “About seven or eight years ago I was rehearsing with a band. One of the cats was talking about this thing called Second Life as a platform to perform live music online. The following day I joined SL! The rest is history!” His enthusiasm and passion for his craft is infectious and evident in how he describes his SL career trajectory as a musician. “Second life has been incredibly fulfilling to me as an artist. The music scene in Second Life is like no other! The fans are Incredibly supportive! They really lift you up! When I perform, I can feel their enthusiasm, and it makes me play better!” He is also very grateful for the venue owners Second life has and their staff, “These people are truly been incredibly passionate about fulfilling to me as music! Truly. And it shows night after an artist. The music night! Much Respect! scene in Second Life Much Love!”

is like no other!

A TwinGhost concert typically comprises of one hour of original and cover songs. Listeners can expect sixty minutes of rootsy, soul-infected rock and all sung live. When asked what his top five favorite songs to sing, he feels it is a hard question to answer simply because of his love of music. He does tell us songs that are on the top of his list, “Just the Two of Us” and “Ain’t No Sunshine” by Bill Withers, “Feels Like Rain” by John Hyatt and “love me song Otiss too. It’s all good! But my favorites are usually the most recent original songs I’m working on.” As a musician in real life, he performs every week in the Pennyslvania area. “I perform every Friday night at a brewery just outside of Philadelphia PA. from 6-9PM. I’ve been lucky to have several SL folk come visit me there and it’s always special! (Come!!). I also perform during the week in different venues around the Philly area.” Check out his website, Facebook and Sound Cloud. Check out his performing schedule: real life and Second Life.

The Proust Spotlight is our monthly feature where we highlight one of the many creative residents of Second Life®. Utilizing the Proust Questionnaire, whose namesake comes from the late 19th century French writer, we will offer a glimpse into what makes them tick. ECLIPSE Magazine has teamed up with the Blogger & Vlogger Network, so each month the blogger we showcase on the Proust Spotlight is a group member. The group member we feature this month is the talented Alicia Chenaux. She shares with us, “I am a blogger and vlogger, a SL wife and mother, and lover of virtual worlds. I don’t create much except a mess, and I don’t run anything except my mouth. But I’m happy in both worlds and that is just fine with me.”

What do you consider the most overrated virtue? Loyalty. I think everyone says they want someone loyal, but what does that really mean? A cat will be loyal to you if you feed it. I don’t want blind loyalty from anyone in my life. I want people there who love me and want to be there because my presence in their life makes them happy. What do you most value in your friends? I really appreciate people who are low maintenance with friendship. It’s so much easier to be friends with someone who doesn’t demand too much. Those are the people I seek out and can’t do enough for, because they are so chill. The more attention and time someone demands of me, the more I tend to shut down. We’re all busy people around here. I think that friends that you can pick up with at any time and have things be good are the best! Which words or phrases do you most overuse? I’m so awful about saying “like” and “cute!” I try really hard to not say it or speak like I’m some valley girl from the 1980s, but it seems to just be my default. I’m also really bad about saying “you know.” But like, you know, I get a lot of cute things! How would you like to die? Saving shelter animals from an asteroid. Or, if that’s not possible, then hopefully as quietly as possible many many years from now. If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be? I’d like to be some kind of cat. Preferably a very spoiled house cat like mine! I think it would be lovely to be taken care of and given all kinds of treats and toys and never have to give much in return expect looking cute once in a while. What is your motto? I have two. One, I’ve had since I first heard it when I was a teen: “The road of life is long, but it is wide, and this too shall pass.” The second, I just happened to see on some picture and it made sense to me. “You can get better, or you can get bitter.” I know which one I always will want to choose! Connect with Alicia on her Blog, Flickr and Youtube Channel.

When Victor Newchurch founded Newchurch, he envisioned bringing a style of decor that was distinctly lacking on the grid. “If I would summarize the Newchurch brand in a word,” Newchurch says, “it would be ‘classic’. To me, classic means timeless, in that these designs would work in many decor themes, from the late 18th century to the present. They would not fall victim to the ever-changing whims of fashion.” In a virtual world as diverse as Second Life®, one would think that the variety of decor styles available would be more than just the usual contemporary fare. The choices decorators have, are growing steadily, but there is still a need to fill a certain niche, especially for those who desire a more classic style of design. Newchurch’s call to Craftsman styles as well as Arts & Crafts furniture come from a deep appreciation of real life designers such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Morris Hunt, Gustav Stickley, and William Morris.

Page 166 | ECLIPSE August 2017

Page 168 | ECLIPSE August 2017

Arts & Crafts is an aesthetic that began in England in the late 19th century with the Arts & Crafts Exhibition Society. Their goal was to “turn our artists into craftsmen and craftsmen into artists.” Gustav Stickley brought the movement to America. His Craftsman magazine provided plans and designs that spread through the country and gave its name to the style. While some use Mission and Craftsman interchangeably, its inspiration comes from the missions of the American Southwest. Nonetheless, the same ethos of natural materials, functional beauty, straight lines and simple curves, and prioritizing high quality craftsmanship unites all three styles. “I’m a huge fan of Mission style furniture, and there were only a handful of pieces that were recreated in Second Life, “ says Newchurch. “Back in 2006, before mesh, before even sculpted prims, furniture had a very high land impact. My first piece, a round table, took twenty-eight prims to build accurately. That piece, recreated in mesh, took only 2 or 3.”

ECLIPSE August 2017 | Page 169

Newchurch recalls his initial decision to join Second Life. “I found out about Second Life from Wired Magazine. I remember reading articles about it throughout 2005, and my curiosity finally had my sign up in February of 2006. Once i signed in and went exploring a bit, I decided to set up shop somehow. I started out with an art gallery, featuring my own RL photography, some of my friends’, and eventually attracted other artists in SL. I eventually gave up on the gallery business, and dabbled a bit with furniture.” Newchurch’s main store is located in the heart of the St. John region, which is based on historic early 20th century New Orleans. Upon entering Newchurch’s main entrance, visitors are immediately welcomed with the happy tunes of ragtime days of old. There are pieces that are timehonored, quintessential, and simple enough, that their uniqueness sets them apart the current market. “As far as going full-tilt into running the furniture business,” Newchurch says, “it wasn’t until mesh came around that I thought it feasible to accurately create the pieces I had in mind. I’m a huge fan of Stickley furniture; hoping to fill my SL home with Mission furniture, there was still very little of it out there. So, I started my line-up by creating the pieces that I wanted for myself. In addition to Mission style pieces, I also create other styles, mostly classic, early 20th century, but I dabble with other styles as well, such as industrial.”

Page 170 | ECLIPSE August 2017

ECLIPSE August 2017 | Page 171

Page 172 | ECLIPSE August 2017

As with many SL designers, a well rounded knowledge of software and tools is needed to bring these ideas onto the grid and into our homes. Newchurch explains his creative process, “I primarily design my furniture in Blender, and use Adobe Photoshop® for textures. I’ll look for inspiration, either on the web, or out in the real world. When I see something that inspires me, I’ll snap a picture (or five) and attempt to recreate something similar. With furniture, I’ll deconstruct the build mentally, then rough out the dimensions. Sometimes, I’ll abandon something and start again, if it’s not turning out how I wanted. Usually, importing into SL is only done once the model is finished, and the textures have been created. “ The advent of mesh opens the doors to possibilities one can only imagine in our virtual world. Architecture and design is in of itself an art form that is now freed from the constraints of prim counting.that. To those who would venture into starting their virtual experience, Newchurch has this to say, “Second Life is most rewarding when you get to contribute to the world somehow, either with products, art, or unique services, and you find that your contributions, no matter how great or small, make a difference in people’s enjoyment.” Check out Newchurch in-world.

a·poc·a·lypse noun 1. the complete final destruction of the world, especially as described in the biblical book of Revelation. 2. an event involving destruction or damage on an awesome or catastrophic scale. Disaster. Destruction. Death. The three D’s are found in almost every part of pop culture. Video games like Fallout, Metro, and Horizon Zero Dawn. Movies like Mad Max, Book of Eli, and I Am Legend. Even television cannot escape with shows like “The Walking Dead”, “The 100”, and “The Last Ship”. Whether the apocalypse comes in the form of disease, aliens, Mother Nature, or a catastrophe of our own creation, the underlying result is the same: a severe cut in the population with the strong struggling to survive.

Can’t get enough? Need more than the video games, movies, and television? Try Apocalypse, the role play sim. The sim opened earlier this year in February and was inspired by CCS (Community Combat System) play. One of the owners of the sim, Kίωί ßяυjα (fraisekiwi), explains her inspiration. “I’ve played CCS games since 2009. My Second Life best friend encouraged me to make our own CCS style sim to play around in.” The other owners are Big Joe (stolish) and Varen Landar. Kίωί is French Canadian and the others are from Spain and France, but they all speak English as well. They consider Apocalypse an international sim. They have players from the USA, Portugal, Italy, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Spain, to name a few. Stolish, the builder of the sim, enjoys building so much that he changes the design of the sim every month or so while still retaining the modern grunge atmosphere. This month’s design is a zombie swamp island in order to keep the vision and ideals of an apocalyptic world. The crux of the role play is that two young zombie brothers come along and cause chaos and madness and it is up to the people to save themselves and their homes before everything gets destroyed. But, once everything is destroyed either by players or the NPC zombies, the sim is rebuilt and it all starts over again.

ECLIPSE August 2017 | Page 189

Previous builds have included a desert and an abandoned circus complete with scary clowns. I don’t consider myself being afraid of clowns, but then again, I was smart enough not to watch Stephen King’s It. I consider myself fortunate to have missed that version of the Apocalypse sim! With each new build, players come with their CCS meters and arm up to battle each other before the NPC zombies come along to destroy the build. When Stolish feels it is time to rebuild, a story is created as to how and why the zombies have come along to level the place. When a character is killed in the role play or when it is time to rebuild, players move on to another one of the other 15 CCS sims for more adventures until the new build is completed. Besides the role play, Apocalypse also offers a variety of fun and games like Kart and paintball. Any CCS approved weapon can be used which include, but are not limited to, swords, guns, and hand to hand combat. When in full fighting mode, the sim typically has 40 to 50 people fighting clan against clan to the death. Page 190 | ECLIPSE August 2017

For those that wish to stay on the sim, rental skyboxes are available. Apocalypse accepts a wide range of avatars: angels, demons, humans, werewolves, vampires, nekos, cyborg, supernatural, and sidhe. Though the CCS meter does not have an option for a furry avatar, furries are still welcome if they are willing to use a different category of being when using the HUD. If you enjoy MMORPG and kill mode on Aion, you will most likely enjoy CCS. Pick up the HUD, choose a race, buy a weapon and learn how to play. Apocalypse is a place you can play in as you learn. Stay respectful of the rules and there won’t be any shortage of help. If language is an issue, they welcome wearing translators in French or English. If you like things that are funny and crazy with the people to match that also enjoy fighting, Apocalypse is the place for you. An ever changing landscape and clans, you’ll never have the same adventure twice. The Apocalypse team also welcomes photographers and bloggers that might want to make use of the unique and ever changing architecture.

Greg Kat is one of the many talented live artists with Whispering Sands Live Promotions. He shares with ECLIPSE Magazine, “I have been performing in RL for many many years and enjoying SL since 2012. Some friends who knew I was a performer in RL suggested I try SL shows and I just fell in love with performing here.” His early beginnings as a singer in SL soon found him with WSL, “I had met and became a huge fan of Essence Billasimo and she brought Jorr Jarman to my very first show (10/11/15). We hit if off right away and he (and the team) have been doing an AMAZING job for me ever since. They are a HUGE part of my success as a SL performer.” Not only is he a talented singer but very humble, as well. When asked to share his top five favorite songs to sing, he has far too many to list. He does tell us that one of the thing he enjoys most is the positive impact his singing has on others. “I had met and became a huge fan of Essence Billasimo and she brought Jorr Jarman to my very first show (10/11/15). ECLIPSE August 2017 | Page 211

There are forms of art that “pass through” our soul and make sense of life, of meaning that escaped us. This way of “making art” always attracts me, because it is the result of introspection, reflection, and the insight of life experience. The artist who expresses self through artwork is sublime. These are the artists who find their primary purpose in art to be a bridge between the known and the unknown, between the material and the spiritual. I found all these elements in Sandi Peterson’s exhibition entitled “Into The Flow” which was hosted by the Impermanence Light House Gallery. Peterson is an artist also in real life; she loves to express her creativity in both the real and the virtual worlds. As she writes in her bio that is available outside the gallery room, Sandi is a “provocation to the mind.”

Page 212 | ECLIPSE August 2017

Mind, in her view, is our rational side that would like to control and manipulate every aspect of life. We say, “It would like,” because in fact this does not happen, and life upsets the plans of mind sooner or later.. Many life events we call “a nuisance,” “accident,” or “drama,” are situations that take us immediately to our inability to have “everything under control,” to live a secure life protected from uncertainties. Life itself is, by definition, uncertainty and mystery and does not like being restrained or locked inside the security fences. Defined in this way, however, life could be considered only in a negative sense, but in reality, its uncertainty is its beauty: this is because the other side of the coin of change is freedom: Freedom to be who we are at that point in our life.

ECLIPSE August 2017 | Page 213

We are never the same, even today we are different from what we were yesterday, so how can we believe that our existence must be static, unchanging when we are constantly changing? How can we think that we must be imprisoned in a particular and soothing everyday life when our soul has a constant need for new ideas, in keeping with our “being” present? And here we come to Sandi’s concept of “flow”. When we live in harmony with the flow of life, we do not need anything else, says the artist. True. The flow is harmony between the inside and the outside, between what we are now and the way we live. A repetitive and static life can never go well for anyone. Our soul evolves, learns from the experience, knows that the experiences, good or bad as they may

Page 214 | ECLIPSE August 2017

be, are the path for the soul to know itself. The soul does not like “fences,” it does not like the limits and “you must not.” I think, if we understood this aspect of us, some forms of mental illness would not exist. If we lived in harmony with our soul, “in the flow,” our life would acquire a beauty and harmony never experienced. Instead, most of the time, in the flow of daily life, the sense of the soul escapes us, we prefer to focus ourselves on the noise of the city than listening to the breath of our innermost being. The soul, however, when it is long unheeded, cries its discomfort sharply through the uncertainty of everyday life events. Because uncertainty is the material the soul is made of, is becoming, changing our daily life, our choice to be who we want and we do every day (although we seem to have to wear the same mask).

Sandi reminds us all this in her beautiful “Into the Flow,” an exhibition where the streams of life are represented by shapes and colors in motion. It ‘s a kind of “movement” that reminds the fractal art, without being one. In this case, we have forms created in Second Life® that are assigned color, light, and movement to give the sense of the “flow” of life. The gallery hosting Sandi’s exhibition was created by Norton Lykin, SL® artist and curator of several art galleries you can visit through teleports at the entrance. I recommend this “dip” in the art of Sandi who is also a “dip” in life, to reflect and to listen to our “inner voice.” The voice we often ignore, We should go into the depths, to give space and comfort not to the noise of everyday life, but to our awareness, our interior voice, to stay “into the flow.” Click here to teleport “Into the Flow” by Sandi Peterson.

on the rise: pocketgacha eclipse magazine showcases the newest and best on the grid. written by ahn

avion. photography by taylor wassep.

Anyone that’s been in Second Life for longer than a week knows about the aptly named Gachas, because once you start, they gotcha! Do you remember those machines often found in grocery stores that you would beg your mom for quarters for? You put the quarter in the slot, sometimes two or more if you found a machine with stickers, turn the knob, and then fight with the plastic bubble to see what you got? For those that have been living under a rock, that’s the best explanation of what a Gacha is. Feed the machine money, get something good, hopefully something you want before you spend all of your lindens. Gachas are the most satisfying form of games of chance found in Second Life. The most addicting too. Due to the popularity of Gachas, most designers have Gacha machines in their stores. There are even events, such as The Arcade, that feature nothing but Gachas. However, because of the popularity of such events, the big issue tends to be lag and that’s IF you can even get on the sim for the quarterly event. This is where PocketGacha comes in to help feed the addiction. As co-owner of PocketGacha, Oobleck (allagash) explains how it all came about. “Our team took a look at how we can address a different perspective in playing Gacha. That is making it easier, fun, and more transparent for shoppers and creators. It’s an amazing platform for shopping and for creators to be able to design in a cohesive way for multiple items. We wanted to make it more accessible in that sense. No teleporting tries for days, no lag, no Page 224 | ECLIPSE August 2017

inability to demo on the fly, play with your friends, and an option to buy full sets for those that prefer not to Gacha. Our goal was to match the fun of Gacha events with the freedom of a play anywhere system that allows unlimited potential for players and creators.” PocketGacha was developed by a fab five of Second Life creators. Including Oobleck (co-owner of KraftWork), there is also Brooke Barmy (founder of Powder Pack), Nodnol Jameson (also co-owner of the brand KraftWork), Triin (custom designer in Second Life), and Mariko (owner of the event Knot and CO) who manages the Japanese creators. PocketGacha is a monthly shopping HUD. Joining the group will grant you a new HUD on the 15th of each month when the event renews. Don’t have another group space to spare but don’t want to miss out? You can pick up a new HUD at the PocketGacha in-world location. Wait..what?! Gacha anywhere, anytime? And, oh! The HUD is FREE! This is about to get dangerous to my wallet! “We have nearly 60 that are official to the PocketGacha brand list and growing each day. This through our vetting process of original mesh and providing diverse and unique offerings in the Fashion, Home and Garden, and Aesthetics categories. Being a flexible and monthly HUD based event we offer our creators a more relaxed approach in being able to come and go as they please and when inspired. We envision 25-45 creators contributing each month within our philosophy (as we are ECLIPSE August 2017 | Page 225

creators and understand the deadlines) to come when you are inspired and ready - and if not wait until next month as we have no limits or wait list once you are approved and there is always room on a HUD,” adds Oobleck. As any male avatar will tell you, shopping can be a menacing chore among the sea of women’s fashion. Worry not, gentlemen. PocketGacha is dedicated to ensuring a diverse selection for everyone. The first round offers Etham, Vale Koer, Sabotage, and Razor for starters. There is a rumor that Barber YumYum is going to do a men’s hair for the first round as well. Oobleck adds, “But the greatness of the HUD concept is that, for men who lack the fight in spending an hour trying to teleport to an event for limited offerings, can simply load the HUD and, my hope, be pleasantly surprised at how many things will be available for them.” When pulling up the HUD, the first tab is dedicated to the sponsors. For this first round, the sponsors are Astralia, Pumec, Hive, No. 13, Vale Koer, Razor///, oyasumi, 7, Breathe, and Semller. After that, the list is in order. You can search, favorite, or just scroll through quickly. Though men’s items are offered, the HUD is not separated by gender as some of the vendors will offer both from round to round. The All Gacha Tab will allow you to search through them to find the ones you feel are useful to your needs. The PocketGacha Team are always seeking out and encouraging unique brands that have yet to become truly recognized and are making 100% original mesh to reach out and introduce Page 226 | ECLIPSE August 2017

themselves to the team. The team is not limited in the sense of their ability to offer a platform for everyone with talent and passion in 3D design and products. There is an unlimited ability for customers to play at their leisure and an unlimited ability to welcome creative people to join PocketGacha to introduce their work to the grid. In regards to reaching out to potential vendors, Oobleck explains, “Our primary approach, as should all be in the more intimate world of Second Life is to reach out and talk to potential creators. We are not interested in applications or submissions. We want to talk to you and learn more. We reach out to many we respect and some we hope we don’t know that are producing original mesh will reach out to us so we can talk. This is a social world and one that while detached in a sense still relies on communication, trust and respect. We love to talk and learn more about our creators to be able to deal with them as real creative people with needs and wishes that we hope to encourage.” Find a brand you’ve not heard of before? The PocketGacha team wants you to know what they know about the designer, too! On the website, there is a Creator’s Corner that delves into the person behind the brand, who they are, their influences, and the life that leads their eye to design. The overall goal is to connect shoppers and creators in a way that is more personal, more approachable, more transparent. Are you an original mesh designer interested in working with the PocketGacha team? Reach out through Facebook messenger or in-world to

either Oobleck (allagash) or Brooke Barmy. They are interested in learning about your brand and vision.

You can then choose to play with tokens freely and replenish when needed. One linden equals one token.

Now that you’ve read about the team and the HUD, how the heck do you play? According to the website, there are two safe and easy ways to play. The first and easiest option is to allow the HUD to interact with your ability to pay. You will get a permissions request from Linden Lab when you first play but it’s 100% safe with a trusted product like PocketGacha. Simply accept the first time and you will not need it again during the session the current event’s HUD. For those who prefer not to accept the simple dialogue warning we also provide an easy system of token purchases through kiosks located at the PocketGacha SIM and also at participating creator stores. Simply buy tokens like you would anything in Second Life and your HUD will automatically update and show your amount on the screen.

For new users to Second Life the dialogue box may be somewhat intimidating. We offer the tokens for them so as to not feel they are blindly giving permissions. We imagine that in time very few will ever use tokens as direct play is perfectly functional and very trustworthy. It is an even exchange and while they are not refundable they are good for any round and never expire. They can purchased at the PocketGacha Flagship store kiosk. Playing direct is easy and once you allow permission on the HUD you do not need to grant it until the next release of a HUD.

The first round launched on August 15. It has taken four months of scripting, testing, graphics, and development, but will take you a lot less time to shop and spend!

ask noey: the advice guru send your questions to noey here, and it might be in our next issue. written by noey ivy london fl

ower. photography by miele tarantal.

Dear Noey, What advice do you have to stop myself from having defeatist thoughts that stop me from doing anything new because I just feel like I am going to fail anyway, so why try? Signed, Defeated Dana Dear Defeated Dana, Your mind is a powerful muscle. If you keep telling yourself that you will fail... then you are going to fail. You will never accomplish anything. It starts when you wake up. Spend 5-10 minutes with quiet time. If that’s reading something positive, praying, mediating, whatever it is that clears your mind and sets you for your day, then that’s what you do. We live in a world that is constantly swarming with negative things and energy. A world that tells you what you are suppose to be, what you are suppose to look like and a world that never stops. Start your day off on a positive note. If a negative thought enters your mind....stop it right in its tracks. You tell yourself “No, I will do this and I WILL succeed.” You keep going and never let anything hold you back. There will be times where you do fail, but understand that all experiences, positive and negative, shape us into who we are suppose to be. It is your choice if you will allow it to ruin you. Or you can choose to use it to grow. We all have storms in our lives. Life is not always a quiet calm ocean. Be ready to sail that open sea and be open to all that comes your way. In the end you are not a failure...you are a beautiful individual with scars. Be kind to yourself, you have a long wonderful life ahead of you.

Page 238 | ECLIPSE August 2017

ECLIPSE August 2017 | Page 239

Dear Noey, I have a really good friend, and he’s amazing. Basically, he’s everything I look for in a guy. The thing is, I’m gay, and he’s not. It’s really hard for me to be around him, but he’s one of my best friends and I don’t know what to do. Do I tell him how I feel? Do I take a break from SL? Do I just keep trying to ignore my feelings? Please help. Signed, Torn Tommy Dear Torn Tommy, This is a tough situation...You have to ask yourself an important question here. Are you ready to lose a wonderful friend that you obviously have an amazing connection with? Life can be unfair and we cant always control who we fall for. But you really have to ask yourself if you are willing to lose that important friendship. He’s your best friend after all. Just like you, he was born this way. And you have to remind yourself of that. Take yourself out of the equation for a minute and think about how he might feel. We tend to think about only ourselves when we are faced with tough emotional situations like this. Of course our feelings are just as important, but sometimes we need a little clarity. When we start thinking about other people, I believe we see things more clearly. Your love for him can be just as strong and meaningful without having to be in a exclusive relationship with him. Perhaps taking a few days off of SL to consider pros and cons. Reflect on your thoughts and then your decision. And come back to SL confident in yourself. Don’t worry, there’s a plan for all of us. Your man is going to come along at just the right time :). Good luck! Page 240 | ECLIPSE August 2017

ECLIPSE August 2017 | Page 241

Dear Noey, A couple years ago, I made some posts on social media. They were very disparaging, and I was going through a hard time (I know that’s not excuse). Now, I’m in a much better place mentally and physically, and I have started my own clothing brand. I went to school for graphic designs, so my textures are great, and all my mesh is 100% original. Some of the people I spoke poorly about have blacklisted me from the events they have. How do I fix this situation? I do feel bad about what I said in the past. How can I make this better? Signed, Judged Judy Dear Judged Judy, Time always heals. If its possible try reaching out to them and asking if you can have a conversation about what happened in the past. If you don’t think you can handle having a face to face talk with them. Take a while to collect your thoughts and feelings and begin to write them a note card. We all make mistakes. We all say things at times that should never be said. Its how we decide to handle it that makes the difference. If your apology doesn’t change heart with them, then you have truly done all you can do. It is important to leave a positive impression on them. And be confident in yourself. Own up to the mistake you made, don’t make excuses for them. Words are powerful and they can hurt. From this day forward use those words to empower yourself and those around you. In this life, SL and RL, we are to treat others the way we would like to be treated. If you continue to do your SL work with that mindset and just put out positive great work, then you will profit in more ways then just financially. Its time to take a step forward in the right direction and make things right :). Page 242 | ECLIPSE August 2017

Voices from the g

Voices From the Grid is a monthly survey of opinions and ideas of Second Life® residents on the salient issues of the day. For this month, Voices From the Grid has an existential crisis this month and sought meaning through the wisdom of the crowd, asking residents “How or where do you find community in SL?”

grid

Laben Core Throughout his eight years as a virtual resident, Laben Core discovered his calling as an advocate for vehicle communities found within Second Life. Using social media, he actively promotes the large and diverse sub-culture of the grid’s planes, trains and automobiles. In addition, Laben is the founder of the Passengers of SL, a group that serves as the perfect introduction to those seeking to learn more about aviation in Second Life via the passenger experience. Few can argue that in terms of sheer variety, Second life is unrivaled to all other available options apart from, of course, first life. This includes the multitude of communities within - one of which is the SL aviation scene, my current in-world preoccupation. To the uninitiated, air travel in Second Life can seem somewhat enigmatic. On the one hand, aircraft in SL are prolific; every resident has at least one flying object stashed somewhere in their inventory. On the other hand, many view aviation as superfluous – after all, why invest in a mechanical contraption if avatars can already fly unaided? A fair question. The short answer is that aviation culture in Second Life offers the kinds of experience, flexibility and robustness seldom found elsewhere. For a slightly longer dissertation, I’ve compiled a list of attributes detailing why I’ve chosen SL aviation as my primary community in the virtual world: Roleplay as little or as much as you want – One of the biggest barriers to entry for many sims is the roleplay requirement. To be sure, amazing things can happen when two gifted orators play out a scene. However, if like myself, you’re neither linguistically creative nor have intimate background knowledge of the material involved, SL aviation provides you with all the mechanizations to realize your own experiences. It can be Page 248 | ECLIPSE August 2017

just you, your chosen aircraft and the sights and sounds of the landscape. Optionally, if you’re seeking roleplay opportunities, there are airline, search & rescue and airport fire department positions available from those who would welcome your literary talents. Spend as little or as much as you want – One misconception about vehicle communities is that you must part with a small fortune in order to get started. In the aviation community, there are craft with prices ranging from free to a few thousand Linden, spend the

balloons, jet fighters, cargo planes, airliners, helicopters and even sci-fi vessels to name a few are just some of what’s available on the marketplace. The level of difficulty also vary; some have highly realistic flight behavior that may take days or weeks to fully master while other aircraft are designed with the novice in mind for easy operation. Many aircraft can be customized with your own textures for that added personalization. There is something for everyone irrespective of experience. Vast expanses to explore – Did you

know there are hundreds of airports spread out across multiple continents? The main grid and its associated partnerships constitute thousands of kilometers worth of area to survey at your leisure. Moreover, there are interconnected private regions of varying themes that also permit vehicular air travel. SL aviation is here to stay – As the loss of private sims become an ever increasing concern, visitors are finding some of their favorite locations vanishing, taking with it their investment in both time and money. The SL aviation community is vast and its transient nature grants it virtual immunity from disappearing overnight. Even as airports come and go, you will always have a wealth of destinations to land at and hanger spaces to rent. Community resources – Vehicle communities like SL aviation have traditionally received very little attention from the few prominent outlets which constitute the bulk of the mainstream press for Second Life. Even Linden Lab as a company seem content to ignore us. Fortunately, a few media savvy pilots have stepped up to help keep everyone abreast of the latest news in the SL aviation community. Tig Spijkers’ SL Aviation group, SL Aviation Magazine, and vehicle review site Things That Move are good resources. If you are completely new to SL aviation and would like to experience it for yourself, consider joining my group, Passengers of SL, where experienced airline pilots (and sometimes even ship captains) offer free rides and guidance (just watch for announcements made in group chat). Should you have any additional questions. Feel free to contact me inworld. Until then, I wish you all blue skies! Check out his Flickr. Photograph by Laben Core.

Grace Sixpence Grace Sixpence joined Second Life back in 2008, long before mesh and half decent avatars. After reading an article in a local Sunday newspaper, she decided to log in and see what all the fuss was about. Nearly 9 years later and she is still here. Friendships are the thing that has kept her logging in. In recent months, Grace has started blogging and still has to pinch herself whenever a store puts their faith in her to showcase their items. Community 1. A group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common. 2. The condition of sharing or having certain attitudes and interests in common. “the sense of community that organized religion can provide” Over the period of close to nine years, I’ve been involved in quite a few different communities. I need to speak first of my closest group, Ava, Kess, Sady, Tracy & Rom. We are each other’s cheerleaders. I’ve already met Ava real life, and my plan is to eventually get to meet them all. Over the years I’ve been involved in the Tiny Empire community, and the Blogger community. Tiny Empires Tiny Empires is a medieval-themed multiuser online game within the virtual world of Second Life. The goal of the game is to cultivate a cadre of loyal followers (subjects), and ascend ranks by amassing gold and land. Gold and land are gained naturally in the game as you play, but they can be more efficiently obtained by attracting and maintaining subjects. The irresistible urge to play grows as you start to realize that your friends may make excellent subjects, and you lure them into the game. This has been a big part of my SL for a long-time, although in the past year I’ve stepped back a bit, the friendships stay firm. Blogging Community In the recent months, I’ve started blogging. I’d been taking photos and enjoying it for about a year, so I took the leap across, of course, Sady and Kess are both involved in this community so I was lucky in that respect, as I knew what to expect before I started. About the same time I started, Kess, Trouble, and Awylder started up the Blogger & Vlogger Network group and this has been a wealth of information, they have designers, event coordinators and other Bloggers in to speak on a regular basis, along with get togethers for everyone in the group to meet up. Along with adding new opportunities and and keeping the group chat lively, it certainly has made my blogging experience way more educational as well as enjoyable. Check out her Flickr and Blog. Bryaxis Foloi Bryaxis Foloi joined Second Life initially in 2006 and played for two years before moving on from the grid to enjoy other hobbies and interests. He returned in 2015 and has been an avid role-player since, amusing himself, his friends, and the occasional random stranger by taking sets of quality screenshots. I just go to where the other furries are, although I try to stick to places where there are people interested in having fun and being naughty – that’s what I’m here to do, so the usual furry clubs like Yiff and some of the more general hangouts like Fluffy or Monsterbox. I explore all kinds of places. To me, Second Life is a place where you can pretend to be an idealized version of yourself, or an idealized person who you’d want to meet. That’s something that can be very fun, and I daresay even addictive. Most of my amusement comes from role playing with people I meet, and most of that writing is sexual in nature. There’s something very fun about writing short stories with people, as I think of it, and there’s a very enjoyable conspiratorial feeling when the stories are sexual in nature or create sexual components. Naturally there are people who are not so literate, and it can be fun to help someone grow their skill at writing in English while amusing them, too. The truth is I just love to write and I like to know my writing gets a reaction out of the people who read it, and SL is a great medium for that as a hobby. Second Life has an added benefit as well – some people are visual thinkers before they are verbal thinkers, and so the way you can literally create a character and watch him or her come to life on the screen in front of you is powerful. I love creating avatars, and I love helping people to create avatars. The Grid is a unique place in the way it allows regular people, who perhaps aren’t yet skilled at writing or drawing, to create visions of aesthetic beauty just by mixing and matching parts and clothing. Nerdy – yeah, but lots of fun – and I am not exaggerating when I say there are people on SL who are visionary. Check out his Flickr. Photograph by Wicca Merlin.

Tralala L Tralala Loordes is a roleplayer. She wandered inworld 8 years ago and while on a tour of Insilico saw and fell in love with the old Diner. From that dim greasy Diner she launched her persona as Diner Lady. Purveyor of highly questionable meat (she called it “locally sourced”). Finding community in SL has been easy for me as a roleplayer. We keep in touch and share news of new roleplay sims and groups where we can join in and find game. Often I looked to the older sims with long established communities. Like 1920’s Berlin, Insilico, and the Wastelands to name a few. Here there are strong core communities happy to see new people become involved in their story. From these groups you hear of new places all the time, founded by people from the older groups like, New York, Cocoon, Dystopia,

Mali Tyran Mali Tyran discovered Second Life in 2009 and very soon landed in CCS (Community Combat System). Curious by nature, she has explored a little bit at everything. She has three different shops and has been a DJ. She focuses on making things for her favorite element of Second Life which is roleplay. When she makes a novelty item for one of her shops, she does it for pleasure, not for lindens and popularity. She has always liked to do photography and when she discovered blogs, she decide to make her own. Her main love, though, is creating things and fighting in combat roleplay. You can find her creations on Marketplace™ at her shops, MALicious, Sainte-Nitouche, and add-oc. Her blog is called ‘’Malicious-A bit more about me.’’ She owns a Community Combat Sim named Apocalypse, because role play is her life. Discovering her world means entering a tornado of activity. At first for me (I guess as for many other people) SL was simply a fun, electronic game where maybe the most novel was that in addition to having fun creating a character, change the appearance, doing shopping .... you could communicate with other people in real time. For me finding a community in Second Life was pretty easy. One day I met a person who invited me to follow him in role play, and then I discovered the CCS, “CCS” means Community Combat System. This community is huge with people from all over the world. Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, France, Mexico, Peru, Canada, and USA, and more. The CCS contains more than fifteen sims in total, there is something for all tastes. If you are interested in visiting my community it is very simple. There are several options open to you. First of all in the search you can write by keyword “CCS” and you would find a lot of places to visit, but do not forget to check PG, Mature and Adult to find more places to visit. I own myself a CCS sim named “Apocalypse” which will be 6 months old this August. Several events will be organized throughout this month. An Observer tag is available at the TP point to allow you to visit and / or take your photos without being disturbed by the players. On Apocalypse we love change a lot so come visit us regularly you might be surprised to land in a completely different design. What I like most about this CCS community is the diversity of people around the world and despite this diversity of languages and culture each one comes to play together and make a better game. The advice I can give to everybody is this; those people are often suspicious of new people, if you are polite and courteous with the people who approach you and explain you are looking to discover a new horizon in Second Life, people will be friendly and welcome you to discover their world. Hopefully you will encounter one day in my world. Check out her Facebook and Flickr. Photograph by Wicca Merlin. ECLIPSE August 2017 | Page 257

Maelle Anais Maelle Anais is an Italian Fashion Blogger. She entered the world of SL about five years ago. It wasn’t so easy to get used to the mechanics of this chat, because she was used to another. So, she left for some years and she returned two years ago. In these two years, she got involved in a Vampire RPG but she lost interest in that, so she decided to start to blog because she likes to take photos and dress up her avatar. She is in love with blogging because she compares it to dressing a doll, especially during the styling of the outfit. I found my first community thanks to an old friend, that helped, supported and invited me to her vampire clan. But I didn’t like staying in a community all the time. I prefer to be a lone wolf and discover all that SL can offer. I like to meet new people, but my motto is “few but good”. No one wants to be alone all the time, but sometimes it is good to be alone. I find SL more fun with good friends and more relaxing to separate RL to SL. Check out her Blog, Flickr and Facebook. Photograph by Maelle Anais.

Catalyno Karsin Catalyno Karsin is an Italian Fashion Blogger, born in the 28/12/2013 in Second Life. He decides to start this experience with his best friend for curiosity. He created a woman avatar, because he loves hairs, dress and fashion! His beginning was very traumatic… he was used to another different interface, so after so many explanations, he left after three days. He returned after a few months and he found his first LGBT club, where he met and got to know so many special people. That is also where he started to learn more about Second Life. Cata left SL again for RL issues and returned again after a few months. He worked as host in many clubs. He has worked as host and general manager, model and blogger. He was a dancer in a famous tribute band and sometimes he works as a DJ. I found a lot of communities, in clubs during my hosting job. I first met many Italian people, but I never liked to stay only with my own country people. So, I discovered other places and found so many good people from other countries. That allowed me to refine my English, and also learn a bit other language, like Spanish, French and Portuguese. In all communities there are “In and Out”, good and bad people. This is SL a second life where you can be what you want and stay with whom you want. If you don’t like something, you can block it or derender it. I think there are also so many cultures to learn, and this is so good to discover. It’s also an opportunity to learn something new, like Blender lessons and language lessons. I also have fun in so many clubs or with live singers, or shopping in so many stores in-world. Check out his Flickr, Old Blog and New Blog. Photograph by Catalyno Karsin.

Lainey Thorne Lainey Thorne joined Second Life in September of 2007 and has had two passions in SL. The first one happened when she discovered her first club and has been involved with the club business since she arrived. She currently co-owns Sanctuary of Rock and shares her love of music through Djing. Another love Lainey has developed over time in SL is a passion for taking pictures so in 2013 she decided to start The Anti Girly Girl blog. Her blog focuses on Role Play and Fantasy styles of SL. I have been very fortunate to be part of several different communities in Second Life. The first and longest for me of course is the club community. I always loved music in real life so when I joined SL the first thing I did was venture to clubs to see what kind of music was being played and it was a decision I have never regretted. I have met people from all over the world and we shared our passion for music. I have been in SL for almost 10 years, I still have friends and family from the first club I worked at. I got to know people from all over the world and sharing that common bond of music has built long lasting friendships. A few years ago I wanted to explore something other than the club scene so I decided to join a MC (motorcycle club) and I was so impressed with their generosity. They are a very tight knit community that has events to get together, talk, listen to music and just have a good time. One of the strongest reasons I joined was because of the charity work and throughout the year many of the MC’s have events to raise money for some very worthy causes. Blogging is another passion for me. It allows me to explore not only my creativity but to see more of Second Life. Through that passion I share my work and exchange ideas, tips, hints and support with other like minded bloggers. I have always found something I enjoyed doing then getting to know the community and slowly build friendships within that community. Check out her Blog and Flickr. Photograph by Lainey Thorne.

Lendariana Exactly one year ago, Lendariana Resident began her adventures in Second Life. On her second day in this virtual world, she met her sister Marie Whitfield, and changed her name to Lendariana Whitfield. New and inexperienced, Lendariana soon started to widen her virtual horizons. While she was learning things, she made new acquaintances and she loved to take part in fishing contests. Soon enough her interests changed. Nowadays she’s into modelling, shopping, fashion and photography. One day, Lendariana was invited to watch the final of a modelling contest and then she had an epiphany: she wanted to become a model too. A few days later, she started to take modelling classes with Jullie Daines, who explained all there is about fashion. She also began her personal blog, and her Flickr. But Lendariana was not satisfied. Last April, she opened her fashion blog together with her sister, and their flickr, where the sisters show off all their style and explore amazing places on the grid. This project unveiled an array of great shops such as Blush Skins, Blueberry, Exxess, Truth, all of which are Lendariana’s favorites. In the future, Lendariana wants to pursue her modelling career. She’s an official model for Blush Skins but she hopes to be able to model for other designers as well. My journey on Second Life is still considered short and I do not know many people, but from the little experience I’ve had so far I can assure that Second Life is an extraordinary place to communicate, to express yourself, to dance, to smile and even to fall in love. The best of all is that all this can be accomplished without leaving your room. There’s always someone to interact. We can meet people from all over

the world and even learn about different cultures or try to learn a new language. When I arrived here, exactly one year ago, I used to visit many portals for new residents. It was a way to meet Second Life’s newcomers and also the veterans, who were always avid to help. Later on I started to meet my friends in my explorations throughout new sims. Such excursions revealed worlds and communities I could never dream of. Once I met a family of wolves and a clan of vampires and another one of Amazons. I visited anime parties and interacted with people who played RPG. At every place I visited, I met people from different cultures, nationalities, languages and with different ways of thinking and of interacting. Each person who passed through my life has enriched my journey in this virtual world with the best they had. A nice thing about Second Life is exactly this exchange of experiences and ideas. No matter what kind of activity you’re seeking, there’s always a reason to let your creative side flow. Nowadays I meet my virtual friends through social media such as Facebook, Flickr, my own personal blog or through friends of friends and even through my sister’s network. My work in the blog, which I keep with my sister, has also given me the opportunity to meet a variety of people. This way I became interested in the colors and the shapes of Second Life’s fashion. Nevertheless, I’m always open to explore whatever possibilities Second Life may bring me in the future. To me, having a second life is a huge privilege and I want to live each moment in this world abundantly. Photograph by Wicca Merlin.

Caesar Caesar Langar joined SL at the end of 2009, having heard it was a place where people were able to experiment and develop their skills. Having studied Architecture, he heard there was opportunity to give birth to 3d creations and also have first view simulation of structures and building. Then he noticed there was a community of people really busy in different activities: not only building, but creating items, roleplaying, socializing. After some time passed just learning how things worked and having passed through some Italian communities, he decided to see whether he could have get a chance to put together two passions he’s always had: fashion and photography. So, in 2013, without any modeling training, he won his first place in a magazine that is no longer existing, but that gave him the clue that he “was having an eye; he always liked creating a story with his stylings, more than wearing nice creations all together.

I think nowadays SL has a bit lost his genuineness, and in a lot of aspects, and in modeling for sure has become more a roleplay; the sense of experimentation has been a bit lost to leave space for a more focus on the appearance. It reminds me a bit the “ceiling theory”, according to which when all new possible goals have been achieved they can only be improved: I’m curious to see things will be developed by the community which is made of very talented people, and which roads will be opened and be ready to be explored: more brains focusing on this will lead more interesting developments. Auryn Imari Auryn Imari has been active in Second Life for roughly seven years now. As an avid role-player within the medieval fantasy community, lately she can be found mostly in medieval fantasy roleplay sims. however she has been known to dabble in the modern supernatural genre. Auryn is the blogger manager for Storybook which provides original mesh clothing and accessories to the fantasy community. Along with being the blogger manager, Auryn is a blogger herself. Having been blogging for over three years, she takes pride in her photography as well as the outfits she puts together to help the Second Life community find their own style. Auryn hopes to spread enthusiasm and happiness through fantasy fashion and role-play to all those who want to express their unique and whimsical styles! The Second Life community to me is a diverse place that allows people to be who they wish to be and explore many of the options that a virtual world can provide within the safety of one’s home. Everything from general to adult genres and ratings can be found within Second Life and that in itself is unique only to Second Life. From the moment you step into the virtual environment that we call home, we are welcomed into circles of people who share our experiences in Second Life and outside of Second Life. Life long connections that cannot be replicated anywhere. Here people welcome you with open arms no matter your insecurities, fetishes, interests, hobbies, and the like, you will always find a place to fit in. The Second Life community is something that you cannot find elsewhere, so many cultures, so many interests, so many languages in one place that spans the globe but yet is so small in the grand idea of the universe. We are truly blessed to have a place that many of us can escape to so that we may be able enjoy things that we may not be able to in the real world. Those who cannot walk, well they can fly in Second Life. Those who cannot speak, their voices are heard throughout the world. We are a community that supports one another. That support even translates to real life sometimes. Shootings that have affected hundreds people and suddenly there is fundraisers that earn tens of thousands of dollars for the victim’s families, Relay for Life events that raise the same amount if not more to support those who suffer from cancer! We are a community of brilliant, beautiful, talented people. Whether you are a creator, a club owner, a photographer, a role-player or anything and everything in between, you are Second Life. Jaicya Jaicya has been in SL since 2012. Albright is her artist last name. She is a Ballet Pixelle dancer and crew member at Ballet Pixelle Production, a professional company presenting innovative ballets in SL and RL worldwide with original animations and choreography dedicated to exploring physical and virtual dance and blended realities without poseballs or huds! This year she has joined The Dazzlers as a dance performer and choreographer. She recently participated at A Walk in the Garden Charity Event, Mr Virtual World Finale, SL14B, RFL Home, Castle & Garden. And this month for Miss Virtual Diva! She loves dancing, photography, fashion, shopping, being with Cosmo and her friends, listening to Scientific topics on the radio, hunting gifts, live music, learning new skills and many more. Follow her on Flickr. Jaicya’s answer to our monthly question was an ambitious investigative report encompassing interviews with many people in many SL communities. ECLIPSE Magazine thought it deserved its own place in the issue where it can serve as a resource for readers. Well, I thought for days how I can differentiate a community from a group. The definition from Cambridge University Dictionary says “the people living in one particular area or people who are considered as a unit because of their common interests, social group, or nationality.” According to that definition, a great example: SL residential neighborhoods. It’s not because I don’t know what it means. I just have to make sure what I will consider as a community instead of just a group in Second Life context. My criteria: The activities are open to the public and free of charge. (All costs are paid for by donations as well as financial sponsorship.) Certain rules should be followed such as treat each other fairly and respectfully. The meetings are run either by hosts, organizers or instructors. Most of all, people come together for something meaningful, enjoyable and/or having lots of fun.

External Social Networks Connecting SL Community • Facebook: While Facebook does not allow pseudonymous accounts, you can attach an SL Page to your real life account and have a FB presence while keeping your first life identity confidential. Some people risk creating an account for their avatar, though they can be lost at any time. • Flickr: If you like taking pictures in Second Life, I would recommend to have a Flickr account where you will find other residents’ pictures. You may contact them by email or writing positive feedbacks and what I like best is giving them awards. (that’s so fun) • Discord: I’ve recently learned about Discord App is a voice communication where several people can simultaneously talk together. • SL Profiles: I used to be a profile reader. In residents’ profiles, I look for groups which I will consider a few of them later as communities. • Plurk: Plurk is one of the most active external social networks for SL users as it is SL-friendly, even allowing people to name SL as their location. Events Then I think of events relating to communities. When I sign on Second Life official website, click Events you have Event Calendar, then click categories there’s Art and Culture, Charity/Support Groups, Discussion, Education and Live Music, and much more. You will meet people in these events. If you’re in Firestorm Viewer, when you sign in, it tells you what is the actual event. Firestorm has classes where you learn how to manage your viewer effectively and its own community. You may join the group Click Help - Join Firestorm Support Group. The staff organizes events for the public. Click here for more information. Bloggers and Vlogger Network I would consider definitely as a community. There are many presentations and live group discussions. Check out their website here. One name pops up in my mind which is Strawberry Singh. Another source to find communities.

Game community Madpea Production is a community not only provide games but raises money for charity and organize events. Events are free and welcome to the public. Click here for more information. Learning Communities VIRTLANTIS “A Virtual World Language Learning Community: Come Speak With The World!” Please contact Kip Yellowjacket for more information or go here. BUILDERS BREWERY I would recommend that you remember this place if you would like to learn to build. This place fits all what I’ve expected for an educational-based community. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Sensuous Maximus. Click here for their calendar. I did ask some of my friends if they have any favorite community.

Gallila Sinatra immediately answered, “yep, spot on users :)” I was puzzled... and then she added “lot of dance enthusiasts, that’s for sure.” This time I definitely agree with her.

LGBTIQ Community What comes into Levi Ewing’s mind is Second Pride Festival. I was with Kit, Rectorarrowsmith Wasp and him to celebrate. That was fun! Levi later introduced me to his friend, Kharissa Indigo “I do as much for the community as I can” - Kharissa She gave me a list of the oldest Pride communities in SL Adham Decuir is the founder of Boystown. Check out their website and on Google+. Evan Greymyst owns two sims: Gay Fun World and Gay Fun Beach “August is our 10 yr anniversary here at Gay Fun World.” - Evan Scary Jester owns TRU Colors. Art Community PatriciaAnne Daviau confirmed to me “Actually LEA is a group of regions dedicated to the arts and promoting art in SL. The sandbox is a bit of a community but really the others are just grants for either 3 or 6 months.” Check the website. By the way, I’ve met three amazing talented builders: Loo Lytton (France), Erico Lecker (Spain) and Cyberklon (Germany). Linden Endowment for Art has granted for the next 6 months to Louis. Congratulations! and don’t forget to check out LEA26 sim. ECLIPSE August 2017 | Page 275
