ECLIPSE Magazine continues their monthly feature where they take it to the streets and ask residents about their New Years resolutions and how they are managing so far.

Often times in the fashion industry, it is easy to become short-sighted and forget that fashion is not limited to that small community. Fashion is the art of expression, which is an integral part of our shared virtual world and the Second Life community as an aggregate; thus, our goal at ECLIPSE Magazine is to not only offer an aesthetically pleasing publication with a heavy fashion influence and rich in content but be accessible to all of SL.. because EVERYONE wants to look good.

Letter From the Publisher It is mid-month, can I still say Happy New Year or is that no longer fashionable? I don’t really believe in resolutions because often times I find that they are glaring reminders of what I ought to do but am not. It’s like when you have a choice between a steamed vegetable and french fries. You SHOULD get the steamed vegetable, but the french fries are so much more tasty. This past year has been difficult, but it was also a year of discovery. Without the hurt and mistakes, I would not be in the position I am now, and I am grateful to be where I am. With that said, I am so excited for the prospects of this new year. Especially, as our next issue we approach the ECLIPSE one year anniversary! Remember to like us on Facebook and join our in-world group to stay up to date on our events and weekly giveaways. In fact, I have just booked 3 extraordinary live singers for our one year anniversary party, and Zzoie will be DJ’ing the pre-party! I do hope you enjoy this issue. We feature the extraordinary Sasy Scarborough on our cover, a piece on a sim dedicated to community and sustainability, a tribute article for David Bowie, the designing talents of Prism and so much more! Happy Readings!

The Role Model Page 32 | ECLIPSE January 2016

Written by Cajsa Lilliehook Photography by Lessthen Zero ECLIPSE January 2016 | Page 33

Sasy Scarborough has had many roles in Second Life®—blogger, customer service manager, creator, sim/retail mall owner, and commercial and charity event organizer. Through all of it, she has excelled, making her a role model for others to emulate. She joined SL® in May, 2006, though she had seen Second Life via a friend’s webcam a year earlier. He was a vampire and showed her Transylvania where he was dancing salsa Page 34 | ECLIPSE January 2016

with a girl while his online friends watched on webcam. She was excited by the idea of being an avatar, chatting with avatars instead of with icons in a chat window was exciting and a big draw for Scarborough. me. I got to help people immediately, and being able to give that help, being able to understand and listen to what people were searching for here, made it larger and larger, it grew through the connections with people, it was, and still is definitely worth staying for. Most people first get to know Scarborough through her blog Sasypants.com. In her blog, she combines photos with conversational and sometimes confessional writing that explains why she wears pieces together and how they make her feel. She shares more than her style; she shares slices of her life. She has been blogging for years and is clearly one of the “old guard” of bloggers who have seen blogging evolve over time. When asked how her fashion sense in SL reflected her first life style, she jokingly replied, “While I have never had that much call for ball gowns and ballgags, I have worn both in Second Life.” For her, it is all a matter of taste. While in first life, she does not have the need or the opportunity for the wide variety of styles she wears in SL, if she were afforded the opportunity to wear them in her first life, she would. “I have worked in fashion retail and hospitality for over 20 years and both mix with each other in various ways. I lean towards classic staples, pieces that do not go out of style, but completely understand the desire of fad clothing too.”

them started. Her second day she modeled for a store and by evening was working as a greeter, welcoming customers. Thanks to welcoming friends, she was able to hit the ground running, entering fully into this new world from the outset, without many struggles to learn and adapt. At the time, I needed Second Life more than it needed me, so the sticking it out was not a maybe I will, maybe I won’t deliberation for

One of the best things about SL for her is that all the shoes fit. “I am tall in RL and so I have size 10 feet. Somehow due to it being hard to find shoes to fit me all the time, made me a shoe addict, if I saw them, liked them and they had my size I bought them, lots of shoes for me. In SL just getting to buy every shoe I like is an awesome thing. Shoes are an important piece for a look, people tend to look at your shoes on first meeting, it is very important to have great shoes, and in Second Life we have great shoes.” For Scarborough, a lot has changed since she ECLIPSE January 2016 | Page 35

Those relationships have changed and seem to mean less than they used to mean. The personal connections that used to define blogger and creator relationships have weakened and even disappeared. “The connection is missing,” Scarborough said, “often a creator does not even know the bloggers they have on their lists, someone else made the list for them, they have never even seen the blog they want their items to appear on, it’s just another Page 36 | ECLIPSE January 2016

began blogging. She remembers when the bloggers were referred to as “press” and were sent invitations to attend launches of collections. “We were sent invitations to things daily, dressed up to attend, and did actual pieces on what we experienced so that our readers experienced them too. When big RL press events happened in world, we were invited to represent the SL press, such as the time I got to be at a Bruce Willis press conference, with Grazia Horwitz and many others. Sachi Vixen was part of that, and had nominated us to attend. It was a huge deal.”

location to have their wares shown. The whole system has diluted itself.” Of course, some of that is due to the increasing number of fashion bloggers, but Scarborough wishes designers would step back and ask what they really want from bloggers. She thinks they should “look at who is in fact more meaningful to them as a promotional tool. Good pictures, interesting information, crediting done in a way that makes it easy to find an item. Look at who you as a store owner and a creator would be excited about if they blogged you, try and get back that feeling that so many designers used to have when they did know that picking them out of an incredibly huge pool of content, was in itself a pat on the back of great work... it was also what made us a community within a community, bloggers fought hard for designers in the past, if something was happening to them, or to just get them the attention we as bloggers felt they richly deserved, but now we will get thrown under a bus without hesitation.” ECLIPSE January 2016 | Page 37

With her long experience and many connections to designers and bloggers, she has built a successful career as a Management Consultant for several of the most elite stores in Second Life. She has helped build brand awareness and managed several successful launches over the years. She was willing to share some of her most important tips to being a successful business owner: 1. You should remember that you are always representing yourself and your business whether you are in-world or not, if your account is linked to your SL account, what you do and say will affect your business. “Many people think that if they are not logged in it does not count, that getting involved in drama or actually inciting it somewhere else, does not affect their business; it does...just as in RL the whole world comes to a grinding halt because the chairman of a company says something at some dinner party that offends someone, the whole world starts taking sides on boycotting the brand, because he represents them, does not matter that it was 9pm on a Sunday night, at a friends house he went to college with 30 years ago, there is no explaining it away.” 2. Do not shame or ridicule your customers, not even anonymously. If you need to vent, vent privately with friends. “While some will sympathise with your plight, the other side of it is that customers may start to be concerned about interacting with you when they need to. A customer imagines that if something goes wrong and they need help, that they’re asking for such help may become entertainment to you and your friends” And yes, customers can be trying and rude and aggressive and because you are in your home, where you should be safe from that, it can feel even worse, but resist the urge to vent to anyone but your most trusted friends. 3. Do not publicly reveal that you hate parts of your work or that you are late and having to rush your work. “Saying that you are so late for an event, that you have 2 days to make something, is essentially telling a whole slew of customers that what you do release you threw together. It could be the most beautiful thing ever, but you rushed it, you stressed over it and you were not prepared. People are spending their money with you, in Second Life, that money is often seen as an investment in you as much as it is a transaction of goods for money....Shopping in SL is a feeling, and when you see that the creator of those feelings, phoned it in so to speak (this is not a mark on their talent, someone can make something epic in a day, that is not what this is about) it can dampen the overall joy.” In essence, Scarborough is saying that if you expect to earn as much money as you would make at a regular job in the material world, you need to treat your business as a business, not a game.

Page 38 | ECLIPSE January 2016

Photograph by Sasy Scarborough ECLIPSE January 2016 | Page 39

And for Scarborough, Second Life is not a game. She reveals that for her, “Second Life is incredibly real, as mentioned above, we are in our homes, exciting things feel so much more special, and horrible things can completely crush you. A home is your safe space, and yet in SL strangers are in it all the time through interaction. It is completely immersive, so much so that when I fall off things in SL my stomach lurches into my throat and I will scream.” On the other hand, when she and her best friend Whimsy Winx master a new skill or put together a perfect look, they will often call out “Levelled Up” to each other. With a laugh, she explains “the leveling up shout is about as Gamey as it gets.” Scarborough has developed many important relationships in Second Life, not just with her best friend, but also with her partner Mel Vanbeeck. “Relationships in Second Life are very real also. If you consider a RL only relationship and the time you spend in each other’s company, talking, sharing moments and so on vs. the time spent in Second Life, you tend to know more about the people you are involved with. My partner, Mel and I talk for hours and hours every single day, we share as much as we can with each other. The same with my friends...Whimsy and I can be plugged into Skype in voice with each other for 12 hours a day, and it has been that way for 6 years straight, it does not get much more real than that. But on the other side some only use Second Life for business or a creative platform, it is still real in the sense that they benefit from it in some way, but their way may not involve relationships with other people.” Page 40 | ECLIPSE January 2016

Second Life has definitely enriched Scarborough’s life, “with the people I now have as friends, and my most incredible relationship with Mel Vanbeeck. I have skills that I did not have in the past, and may never have even explored, such as Photoshop, and some basic 3d Modeling, that I hope to get better at.” Scarborough also has her own business called Flair where you can find the perfect mani-pedi design for anything you can imagine. However, this business happened more by accident than design. Flair had come and gone a few times. She made some flats, then lost interest and left it fallow. When Siddean Munro released the Slink manicure applier kit, she got one to learn how it worked in order to help and inform others. She made a texture, applied it and it worked well. And here, her first life experience came into play. “I trained as a Nail Technician when I was 20 but did not do anything with it because the fumes were horrible. So apparently I had all this backed up nail art in my brain just waiting for the opportunity to spill out. I created 100 sets in two weeks and did not look at any pictures for inspiration it was just all drawn from ideas I had, and things I had seen in the past, it was insane. The rest were a mix of both seen and asked for, with inspiration pulling me out of bed at strange hours.” She also collaborates with best friend Winx, often releasing photosets with poses and props. She characterized that collaboration as more her pushing her way in. They lived on the same sim and Winx was often building something, ECLIPSE January 2016 | Page 41

Scarborough has been active in helping Hair Fair which she says is “always a With her leadership, it has become the rity event on the grid raising thousands ach year for Wigs for Kids. Mel does all the scripting, and most ng, Whimsy works with him on building ping - she is so talented that way - and me with the creators.”

One of the changes she thinks is most substantive in making Hair Fair a big success as a fundraiser is requiring creators to donate a minimal percentage of every sale rather than one hundred percent of the sales on a select item or two. There are differing opinions on this and you will find those who declare they will only buy charity items set to 100% donation while others recognize that a smaller percentage of more items may lead to a bigger aggregate donation. It is similar to the economic question of finding the optimal price. What is optimal? As she explains it, “One of the biggest changes we have made, and one I thought about a long time before we implemented it, was the way we donate during the event. Originally my first year it was donating 50% from one pack, the next year I spoke to Elikapeka Tiramisu ( One of the original founders of Hair Fair ) and we all agreed on 50% from one style. Then the year I had to take care of finances - the Chair was not well and pulled out - and was logged into the account, I realised that there was a huge gap between kachings while I was logged in, but the sims were packed. I thought about how that could change, and discussed it with Mel and Whimsy all year, until the next year we proposed to the then Chairs - there are no Hair Fair Chairs now, we are a team - that a lower percentage from all styles would benefit everyone, giving to Wigs for Kids with every sale, but also taking away any guilt from the customer. I would see people debating about whether to get that hair or this hair because that hair is the charity hair but they like that one more...we took that out of the equation, and it has benefitted everyone since.” With all her activities, it is clear that Scarborough loves Second Life with a passion. Asked what were her favorite things about SL, she replied, “First and foremost it is the creativity and growth of individuals. I have seen people start out in Second Life as everyone else, same playing field and go on to become huge businesses, or just incredibly skilled creators. Having never opened a program other than paint or notepad, and doing things that just open up their imaginations so wide, and they share that with us.” She would, however, love to see some changes to the Terms of Service in regards to theft. Certainly the DMCA process has restraints, but she wishes Linden ECLIPSE January 2016 | Page 43

Lab™ would say that since it is a voluntary association to use their platform, that the Lab could just say “our way or the highway.” Because she managed DMCA’s for a well-known brand, she knows how blatant theft can be. “I would come across boxes of stolen content, and the items even though botted would still say the original creator’s name in the description, or have their logo inside the product. That LL cannot just remove that is odd to me. I always dreamed of a team of Fashionista Lindens...a team of people that were very aware of what store created what content, and would be able to remove it, they could of course compile proper info to back it up, such as screenshots of the originals etc. That you can see on marketplace a store of skins that are from every creator of skins all over the grid being sold for 10L or something ridiculous, and even have the proper store name as the enticement, again, should be removed, and should not have to be a process to do so.” Scarborough also has ideas for how Second Life could better market itself. “I would hit the places that have people already in an imaginative state of mind... movie cinemas for one, advertising in those is actually much lower than most would imagine. You also have a captive audience, and the grandness of it on such a huge scale would be epic, something that people would really investigate. I would promote on websites for crafts, art supplies, people that may be tinkering with tools that could make Second Life even more amazing to them, or have dreams of being able to do things that they never imagined were possible. There are fewer people that come to Second Life understanding what it will give back to them tenfold.” She continues, “There are so many ways to share Second Life, so many people it could benefit, help, and nurture. I could go on for pages with this topic, because each time I think of one it shoots off to another.” As to her future, she has recently closed her sim, The Deck, and her quarterly designer showcase, My Attic, after six years of successful operation. There is no grand reason for closing, other than wanting a break from all her responsibilities. “At the moment I see vast open spaces...I want to spend some time on projects for myself, and see how that goes. I also want to learn more, have the time to improve things.” Page 44 | ECLIPSE January 2016

As for herself, there is one thing she would like to change. For some reason, more times than she would like, people have told her they are intimidated by her and some have even gone so far as approaching an intermediary to ask her something. This baffles her and she wishes people would see her as more approachable. So please, she asks, “If you want to ask me something, do it, my IMs are always there, if I am not online, don’t wait to do so, IM your heart out. I get everything to email, so I will respond when I can. I am the least scary person, unless you do actually know me, and you make me cranky, but even that all comes from caring and wanting to help.” She knows she may rub some the wrong way, “I am very bossy, and I type like I talk, fast and matter of fact, but it is never meant to be rude, or hurtful or anything but me trying to get everyone on board to be the best they can be, do the best they can do, and show the world they are what I see in them. If I spend time with someone to help them, then I am usually their biggest fan, I will push and push and keep pushing uphill supporting from behind as much as I can, that unfortunately has been abused often, I have been used a lot in Second Life, but it does not change me, If I believe in you, you are so worth the work.” Scarborough did not grow up on the internet and is not one who can shrug off the sometimes shocking malice that anonymity can foster. “Things that shock me shock me, and things that hurt, hurt a lot, where as I see friends, shake it off, so easily. For one second I wish I could do that, but then I am glad I can’t, I am reactionary, to my own detriment, but it is what it is, and it is me, I love with every part of me, internet or not.” Sasy’s Blog What’s New SL Flair on Marketplace Hair Fair

On January 8th, David Bowie fans like me thrilled to the release of his new (Blackstar) album.. The video for Lazarus had been released the day before and I had already shared it on plurk with a singular “Wow!” and eagerly anticipated the new album which received rapturous reviews in the music press. It was his birthday, one he shared with Elvis, a small fact that mattered a lot to him. He once said, “[Elvis] was a major hero of mine. And I was probably stupid enough to believe that having the same birthday as him actually meant something.” Fans speculated that Bowie’s : could be an homage to Elvis unreleased song “Black Star” and an acknowledgement of his mortality. In the Elvis song, “when a man sees his black star he knows his time, his time has come.” Certainly many of the lyrics on : were portentous, beginning with the first line of Lazarus, “Look up here, I’m in heaven.”

he played a saxophone, was a big Coltrane fan, and he played with Pat Metheny. But in : , he was playing with a jazz band. For lifelong Bowie fans, it was another testament to his genius and his courage --- who but Bowie would reinvent himself again after more than fifty years as a recording artist? Where would he take us next? That was answered two days later when the world learned he was dead after an eighteen month journey with cancer. And yes, the stars looked very different that day. What a gift he gave us that during that difficult journey, he took the time to craft this wonderful goodbye. The songs have a new context now they are his final words -- or maybe they are not, he was recording another new album in a final burst of creativity before his death. This all seems quintessentially Bowie. He was always courageous. He said he was gay when it was professional suicide to be gay. Then he said he was bisexual. Then he married, divorced and married again to live happily ever after with Iman. He defied categories and classification and showed the world that we can live outside the binary. When MTV was new, he challenged them on the paucity of black musicians in their programming long before diversity and representation were buzzwords. So it is no surprise that Bowie faced death with courage and a kind of joy -- not that he was leaving this world, Page 82 | ECLIPSE January 2016

but that he was facing a new adventure. He was always ready to turn and face the strange.

Second Life’s® Picture of the Day on Monday, the day after he died was an homage to Bowie playing the Goblin King in Labyrinth done by Strawberry Singh and Winter Jefferson. It seemed singularly appropriate that Second Life would remark his death, because Bowie was a man of many avatars, from Ziggy Stardust to Jareth the Goblin King to the Thin White Duke and now finally to Lazarus. Bowie was also a man who loved and understood the internet. The first rock star to release a single only on the internet, he also created his own ISP called BowieNet back in 1998. And yes, I had my own @davidbowie. com address. He also launched BowieWorld, a 3D chat client that preceded Second Life and incredibly is still running. Much has been made of Duran Duran’s adventures in Second Life, but I have always thought Bowie was here. Not as Bowie, but as an explorer of the art scene or a quiet spectator sitting on a couch at The Velvet and chuckling when a DJ would cue up “Young Americans” and the people in the club would say “Tune.” I think he would have had alts, many of them. How could he resist? He, who had made an art of being an avatar in human form. There are a few people who are baffled by this outpouring of grief after his death. They say he ECLIPSE January 2016 | Page 85

is before their time and of course, that is a silly thing. How can any musician be before any time? Is Beethoven before our time? Music accretes, it does not replace. Always there is more and the sheer weight of it all grinds some into dust and others into diamonds. Bowie is among the diamonds. But then, I wonder if maybe they do not understand why Bowie is so essential? After all, violating gender norms is not so shocking today. LaVerne Cox has been on the cover of Time and the world is less binary than it was when Bowie was scandalizing the world and making space for difference. Maybe he is before their time because they need him less now that there are other successful people who defy and reject the boxes we are told to check. It is safer, if still not safe enough, it is safer to be different today. And isn’t that what Bowie was always asking us to do? To not care that we’ve torn our dress or that our face is a mess. To put on our red shoes and dance with him. To be heroes, if just for one day. To turn and face the strange. To be free, just like that bluebird.

Etopia is a dream brought to reality by WilliamTheWise Goodman in 2007. His vision was to showcase sustainable living using builds that modeled best practices in water management, wind and solar power, transportation, community living, and urban development. The people who have gathered here over the years shared the same values and contributed to the community with their own builds, whether it was a real world model or a prototype for potential real world use. This Second LifeŽ community was created with a unique feel to it, as visitors would walk into what was left of a late 19th century mining town that has evolved over time into a place that lived simply and sustainably, without dependence on things like OPEC or a national power grid. There have also been modern touches added like a tram and gondolas. The sims were geared for education and to raise awareness about critical issues facing our future with a strong environmental focus. Teachers, engineers, conservationists, and scientists either lived and built things at Etopia or they were bringing their classes in world for an immersive educational experience. In 2009, Etopia was saved from possible closure. Namaara MacMoragh had discovered Etopia in late 2008 and believed strongly enough in the vision that when Will had to pull back, she was able to step in and has kept the dream running since then, purchasing the sims and building up the community. While Will’s background and passion was the environment and sustainable urban development, Namaara brings to the table an excellent background in organizational development with a Page 116 | ECLIPSE January 2016

ECLIPSE January 2016 | Page 117

focus in nonprofits and cooperatives. Their passions for sustainable living intersected and with their diverse approaches, they have created a vibrant community. The overarching vision that Etopia represents sustainable living remains. The objective that the sims provide an engaging and educational experience while providing a community in which all contribute is very much still the focus. Namaara states “We’ve expanded on the idea of sustainable living, but we haven’t changed the core vision.”

She believes a lot of that comes from the fact that all share the same core values around the best way to live in harmony with the world around us and each other. The community interacts with one another and visitors and get excited about new things and appreciate the stability of what has been created at Etopia. Many have been friends here since the beginning and it has built a strong community.

The Etopia sims are at capacity right now. A lot of the residents that were inworld in 2007 and 2008 who stepped away from SL They are very intent on ensuring that visitors for a few years have returned and found their to Etopia not only enjoy a unique Second Life place once again as part of this community. experience, but that everyone can take away There is a spirit of coming home when they even a little something that affects the way return. That is what makes this community they go about their real lives. Every resident work. It is a fundamental charm about Etopia. has the same passion for that mission. Namaara tells us “I believe that is part of why Etopia also has a unique aspect of amazing we’ve been around so long. Collectively, we collaboration between first life and share the same values in very real ways.” Second Life. Etopia’s community is home

Page 118 | ECLIPSE January 2016

to educators, engineers, activists, and conservationists, all people who share a love of the environment and simple living. With this incredible environment available, high school teachers and professors bring their classes to visit Etopia, where students can learn about earth Science, physics, environmental issues, and more. It is an amazing opportunity for classrooms around the world to visit and get hands-on field experience. Etopia has a couple of engineers who have used this virtual platform to prototype ecofriendly products and the community has an architect that designed some tiny homes for real world sales. Nonprofits also share their message in Second Life through Etopia and in turn, Etopia brings their message to other organizations. The outreach between first life and second is incredible..

Namaara uses her background and experience to also offer real world trainings in Second Life that increase either individual or organizational effectiveness. She also facilitates real world collaborations here. That is actually how Namaara started, by doing team meetings in Second Life to save on travel expenses and it grew to be a very successful strategy. These are just a few of the bridges this amazing community has created between first and second lives. They also collaborate with other sims and organizations in Second Life such as Nonprofit Commons, Virtual Ability, and Inspiration Island (Whole Brain Health). With the new year, Namaara says she has her sights set on continuing this incredible enterprise, with her goal to let Etopia grow organically and to adapt to changing times, ECLIPSE January 2016 | Page 119

Page 120 | ECLIPSE January 2016

just like has done in first life. To her, this is the healthiest way to live. She also would like to see the community continue to build on what makes them successful and that draws people into the experience. For example, Namaara would like to create an immersive role-play that gets people thinking and acting in ways that are mindful and sustainable. There are hunts and quests and games galore in Second Life. Some of them are fantastic and can be easily adapted for Etopia. But she’s not quite sure if that is a 2016 project, or perhaps a plan for down the road. In February, the Etopia community is opening two more sims. One will be dedicated to independent living; tiny homes, personal water reclamation, and off-grid power ideas. Those who take a parcel there will create examples of how people can live responsibly. This kind of education influences everyone’s first lives in huge ways. The other will largely be water and she envisions a water protection demo there that is related to oceans and ocean life, while being open to sailing and such. Also, in 2016, Etopia’s the organizational nonprofit presence will be prominent. If you walk around Etopia, visitors can see some great example of real organizations doing real work in Second Life. While there is so much to do on the Second Life grid, it is amazing to find this hidden gem, where education, research, and sustainability are all featured and available for visitors to learn more about and take part in. The community is a beautiful and organic entity that is growing and perhaps, just maybe, we’re seeing the spark returning of using Second Life for real world applications.

Since our April issue of ECLIPSE Magazine, we have done this segment “Ways to Wear” to highlight how style is unique to the individual by providing two models the same items while resulting in two different looks. We took this concept a step further with a friendly competition between our models, by empowering our readers with the opportunity to “vote” on who they feel styled it best. This issue we have our certified models style against some of the best bloggers and stylists on the grid. As always, vote for your favorites!

Voices From the Grid is a monthly survey of opinions and ideas of Second Life速 residents on the salient issues of the day. With the New Year, people often make resolutions. What resolutions have you made in Second Life? Have you managed to keep them so far? Do you think resolutions help people to achieve their goals or just make them feel bad when they break them?

Charlie Namiboo Charlie Namiboo joined Second Life® in April 2009 and has hardly missed a day since then. She is an enthusiastic photographer and coowner of the well-known sim Frisland and the Soul and Funk Club Bohannon. Hmmm resolutions for SL? I don’t have any, because my SL is pretty perfect the way it is. I am running a sim and a club with friends, I am in a relationship, I have great friends and I love to take pics. I don’t want to change a thing! Regarding resolutions, maybe it works for other people but not for me. I can’t imagine why I should wait to change something on the first day of a new year. If there’s something going the wrong way, I change it immediately, that’s it.

Do I succeed? I don’t know, but I do have met so much wonderful people in SL, and talked to wise and kind men and women from all over the world, that I can say; the goal of “spread the love” is definitely a goal a lot of people go for. Whatever resolutions people make, whether they succeed to achieve their goals or not, the most important thing in everything is love. And there’s a great quote about love I always keep in mind: “ Love is the best gift, because it’s free to give, and priceless to receive”. Ayzegul Ayzegul has been in Second Life for eight years. He loves discovering new things in SL and being creative. He would describe himself as fun, with a good sense of humor, sensitive and very shy. He is passionate about taking pictures that express emotions. He is also a sim designer and a big dreamer. He loves to wander the grid, experiencing the many moods of SL residents. Happy new year and all the best wishes to you and beloved. Every year, I make new resolutions and none of them have been kept so far in Second Life for me. It actually does not make me feel bad but smile! It means that I got totally absorbed by what I found in there and lost my way, or totally woke up from the joke I was playing on myself. Here is another new year and, of course, new resolutions. So this is the latest one, taking Second Life as a platform for creativity and imagination and concentrating only on creativity. No more spending time on social entertaining or an eventual romance. So my latest resolution is to associate my imagination with someone silly enough to be creative with me to just let it be on a picture! So far, I am doing it but the year just started. I think resolutions are a huge booster and are necessary for developing ourselves as well for challenging our abilities. I do not think breaking a resolution should make us feel bad. Well, it never made me feel that way. It is somehow a state of mind which, no matter what, helps and stimulates us to move on.

Satus Voltz Satus Voltz is the founder and CEO of TeleportHub.com, a teleport directory to freebies, promotions and events. Q: What resolutions have you made in Second Life? I have two SL new year resolutions. First, I will work harder in SL to build great things. Second, I take free time seriously by getting out there more to explore the SL World and hanging out with friends Q: Have you managed to keep them so far? Absolutely. It is easy to get lazy, right? I try to balance the work and personal things. Q: Do you think resolutions help people to achieve their goals or just make them feel bad when they break them? Every year, we all have many goals which we want to achieve. It can be about SL work or personal things. So, setting up resolutions will give us a clear direction to do things. It is easy to get sidetracked. However, people should never feel bad about that because at least they are on the way toward your goals.

The super big ones, make them over two years or more. Don’t stop doing what you love and enjoy the time you spend here. So far I am on track to keep my goal, but I am also giving myself a wide berth to reach these goals of mine. I am always disappointed in myself when I can’t reach a goal, so I’ve learned this last year that I need to step back. I hate to hear people forget their goals or never meet them. If it’s something you can get help with, ask for help, it’s an okay to ask for help when you need it. Be driven and motivated. ECLIPSE January 2016 | Page 167

Proust Spotlight: Caitlin Tobias Page 170 | ECLIPSE January 2016

Photography by Caitlin Tobias ECLIPSE January 2016 | Page 171

Caitlin Tobias is an avid explorer and dedicated blogger, who loves to take pictures and hails from the Netherlands. Both talented and humble, her likes vary from cheese and sleeping to deep coversations and Mozart’s Requiem - Lacrimosa. What is your ideal of perfect happiness?

How would you like to die?

To be absolutely content with life and even though one can have wishes, it is not limiting happiness without those.

In my sleep, without pain and suffering and if possible not within the next 50 years.

What do you consider the most overrated virtue? Modesty. There is nothing wrong with being proud of oneselves and daring to say that out loud. Which words or phrases do you most overuse? Haha, well...I think I use ‘well’ too much in conversations. What do you consider your greatest achievement? I think my SL photo’s, I like them myself but I always get extra happy when someone takes the effort to tell me they enjoy them too. If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be? I can’t answer this, I do not believe in coming back after death :). What do you most value in your friends? Humour and honesty. Which historical figure do you most identify with? None, I can’t think of anyone, sorry! What is your greatest regret? To have lost friendships over miscommunications.

What is your motto? Be yourself, but don’t use it as an excuse to be an asshole to others. What is your most marked characteristic? Oh, I think you have to ask my friends, I have no idea! What is your favorite journey? I like to travel allover, in SL as well as RL, as long as it is to a destination where there is some action. Who is your favorite hero of fiction? Indiana Jones! If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? In SL I can change anything at anytime... What is your most treasured possession? It is a mesh-version of the monocle my friend Don always wore on his avatar. After his death I was gifted a copy of it and it is the most precious piece in my inventory.
