These past few weeks have been very trying for me. In fact, for the first time since April 2015 — I didn’t publish an issue of ECLIPSE Magazine. I had to focus on my mental health and to come to terms with a few things in my life. Life is funny in some ways and practically cruel in others. For everything that happened before, it’s been nothing compared to these past five days. The mixture of fear and worry and everything in between… I am so grateful to the people in my life that haven’t pushed me to talk, but have been there for me nonetheless. They really mean so much to me. I have this odd habit of trying to always look at the bigger picture, but when that happens I tend to trivialize the smaller things. When it’s the smaller things that sometimes matter the most. It’s as if a single grain lost on the shores if the story of the world could be conveyed by simply breaking glass back into granules of sand. I’m awful at segues, but this is the first issue with my Assistant Editor, Tiffany Parkin. I’ve known her for close to a year now, she’s actually appeared on my cover, and I’m thrilled for the opportunity to work on ECLIPSE with her. It’s her influence that has brought back the “Artist Highlight.” I really do love how many extraordinarily talented live singers there are on the grid, and I don’t get to go to as many live shows as I’d like but there’s such a good community feel. With that, I’ve also brought on Sol to help me with social media. She actually started last issue, but I’m so happy to have her with us to promote the magazine. The issue is not as lengthy, as it usually is, but we still have ten features. I do hope you enjoy it, and happy readings!

One of the things people pay a lot of attention to in both our first and our Second Life is our skin. In our first live we buy cleansers, toners, creams, serums, and lotions hoping to keep our skin supple, soft, and wrinkle-free. In Second Life we invest in skin and makeup to express our personality. Aida Ewing of Glam Affair has been helping SL men and women define themselves for years. By partnering with Maitreya and Lelutka, Ewing has made Glam Affair one of the dominant brands on the grid.
were trying to think of something to occupy them and hit upon opening a store. They opened Beauty Avatar two months later, a full-service store with clothing, accessories, and skins. Eventually it became Glam Affair but their mainstore is still on the original Beauty Avatar sim. Asked to name her favorite and best-selling items, Ewing said, ”My favourite item is always the last one I have created and we do 6-8 events a month so it changes often! The biggest selling item ever is a pre-mesh system skin called Amberly.”
Ewing was not always among the elite designers of Second Life. She joined in 2007, encouraged by a DeviantArt friend who was excited by SL photography. Her friend moved on, but Ewing stayed because she had a job...as a dancer. In her early days, she loved exploring though it did lead to a short episode as a voyeur, “I wasn’t aware of the more ‘intimate’ side of SL and was a typical noob back then. I was wandering around Tempura Island exploring and came across two couples having sex...I didn’t even know then that was possible in SL!!! I was in an underground area and couldn’t work out how to get away and leave them and couldn’t tp because of lag so I ended up there a lot longer than I planned...and I’m sure longer than they wanted an audience for!”
Perhaps because she makes so many skins for so many people, there is no “typical” Glam Affair customer. From vampires to fairies to fashionistas, Glam Affair cloaks them all in beautifully rendered skin. Ewing believes her customers value her skins because they are discerning customers who want high quality and high value. “Our skins also have a wide age-range appeal as we have some very cute younger looking skins (like Dakota) through to some edgier skins like Felisja and classic glam female looks like Gea or Sapphire. The range of heads we work on now also leads to a more diverse customer base so we are always looking at new trends in real and Second Life to bring customers what they want.”
The road from dancer to designer was as much happenstance as anything. Ewing and her friends
Glam Affair skins are the base included in Maitreya mesh bodies and Lelutka mesh heads, a significant bonus for Glam Affair users. This combination of head,

body, and skin makes it easier for Glam Affair skin users. They don’t need to get body, head, and foot appliers because its built right in. Sure, it’s not that difficult and not that expensive, but easy is easy. These kinds of long-term partnerships are rare. ECLIPSE asked how the partnership with Lelutka worked when they are both producing so much new product. As is common with successful long-term partnerships, they have clear roles. It doesn’t hurt that they are friends as well. “We’re friends as well as colleagues with the team at LeLutka and having that friendship has aided the professional relationship. LeLutka will include us early on in the process of creating a new head and we will probably have created the skins a long while before they are ready to release the product.” Of course, Glam Affair makes appliers for other heads and bodies as well, as Ewing clarified. “Glam Affair creates appliers for a number of other head including Catwa, Genus, LAQ and more so we maintain good professional relationships with all the ‘industry players’. In addition to the heads we provide body appliers to match for the main bodies and have good relationships with those too.”
that she has to set up HUDs and scripts. The skins need to be boxed and packaged in attractive delivery HUDs. Ewing says that part is not her favorite, “The bit I enjoy least is one of the final steps - creating the vendor photographs.” Other than continuing to release several new skins a month, Glam Affair has just launched a range of body appliers for the new Legacy body that is growing in popularity. Ewing also released twelve new skin tones earlier this year, but that does not mean she is resting on her laurels. “We have some loose plans for some different packages of products. Of course Bakes on Mesh is going to be a massive development for the applier sector of the SL economy. We’re keeping a close eye on how that is developing along with our colleagues in the mesh body and head sectors and we’re already considering what changes, if any, we will need to make.” Of course, the best way to keep up-to-date on developments is to follow Glam Affair on social media or join the in-world group.
Unlike many of the creators with more than a decade in Second Life, Ewing is not nostalgic for the past. “In all honesty I much prefer SL now than ‘back in the day’. it didn’t look good, well, residents would fuss and fiddle with their shape to make it work. Now a creator may make a skin, but then must map it to each of the many different heads for which she makes appliers. It is more work, but that is okay with Ewing. “Now each head and body has a different shape and uv maps so each one needs specific and different approaches. I still prefer mesh as the end product is more unique and far more beautiful than system layers.” But life is not all work and no play for Ewing. She is an avid reader, a fan of Stephen King. She also enjoys all genres of music, but she is currently obsessed with vaporware. “I have a small circle of friends and enjoy spending time with them or chatting on discord with them. I’m rarely seen out partying and more likely to be found just spending some quiet time with my nearest and dearest in SL.”
Second Life has been a life-altering adventure for Aida Ewing. She met her partner M4ri1yn of Tableau Vivant. Friendships in Second Life have extended into her real life, enriching her life. Most obviously, it has provided her with an income rooted in using her creativity. “I’ve come a long way since being a noob dancer getting stuck in underground tunnels and I’d describe myself as modestly proud of my achievements. I would add that the ever-changing nature of the platform means there are always new challenges and that’s what keeps it’s fresh and exciting as a creator and as a resident.” Visit Glam Affair in-world. Utilizing the Proust Questionnaire, whose namesake comes from the late 19th century French writer, we will offer a glimpse into what makes them tick. ECLIPSE Magazine has teamed up with the Blogger & Vlogger Network, so each month the blogger we showcase on the Proust Spotlight is a group member. The group member we feature this month is the talented Sol May Valor. She shares, “As a college student in the real world, I use Second Life not only for entertainment use but, as a simulation to practice my design, networking and marketing skills. I’d like to remind people on the grid that this is a platform where your creativity can shine.”

What is your ideal of perfect happiness? Honestly, I’m a capricorn. I’m ambitious, always on my feet and need goals or paths to keep me busy. As long as I strive high for what I desire and give everything I have. I think I’ll fulfill my ideal of perfect happiness. What do you most value in your friends? It’s important that my friends can put up with my goofiness. I have a lot of quirks and tend to have a hard time letting people into my life. Vulnerability creates friendship. It’s important we acknowledge our weaknesses and obstacles. Laugh it out with the people you love most. What is your most marked characteristic? People say my persona is similar to Billie Eilish. I don’t know? If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be? I’d become a gnome, because your day would consist of people watching and flower picking. What is your motto? If you know me, I say a lot of wack. I’d say the most recent motto would be, “You’re lookin’ like a snack.” What do you consider the most overrated virtue? Second Life is used for many things, including helping people to interact in meaningful ways when they are far away from each other. In earlier days, finding experiences to enjoy together in Second Life - going dancing, watching a movie together or creating your own vacation - were plentiful, but are lately becoming harder to find. San Carlo Resort, an immersive roleplay environment and vacation destination in Second Life that launched mid-August 2019, was created to bring some of that “long distance connect” culture back to the grid. Minnie Fae, co-creator and coowner of San Carlo Resort (with Trouble Dethly), has been in Second Life since November 2007, off and on, for 12 years. “I saw an ad for it when watching Gossip Girl,” she laughs. “Warner Brothers ran about a 4 or 5 year campaign with four sims that held the ‘upper east-side’. It was a lot of fun - they had parties, tons of people to hang out with and a cool little HUD you could attach to your screen and put in secrets, just like the show!”

“I feel like I’ve tried everything at least once in SL, especially with how long I’ve been around,” says Minnie. “Currently I’ve been roleplaying a lot, shopping, taking pictures/blogging.. Well trying to blog anyways!” She loves to play games like Greedy, Monopoly, Clue, and also enjoys decorating, and spending quality time with her friends. On her inspiration to open the San Carlo Resort, Minnie Fae says that she first had an idea to open up Linden homes for Airbnbs “so people could enjoy vacation away from their homes without doing all the work”. That idea evolved into opening a full resort, which consists of a sim with four fully furnished locations that can be rented for one day, or up to a week, and include different amenity packages depending on the rate. These amenities, created with varied tastes in mind, include wine tastings, full service dining, massages, horseback rides, a petting zoo and a “float in” movie theater. “The environment is inspired by the Mediterranean coast, with grass and sand, and a natural sea breeze,” says Minnie Fae. “I think the way San Carlo is unique from other resorts, is because we believe in quality versus quantity,” says Minnie Fae. “We might be small, but every detail was placed there for the resort goers in mind. All staff that is hired to work at the resort are experienced roleplayers as well, so you’ll enjoy the full experience and not have to worry if the other person knows what they are doing.” She says that management is almost always reachable, so if any issues were to arise, staff are there to help take care of them, no matter how big or small the issue.

One of her favorite things about the resort is the horses one can ride around the sim. “They are just so fun to play with and ride around on,” she says. Another fave is that each cabin that is for rent is parceled off for privacy. “I can’t say how many times I’ve gone to a resort sim, and want some alone time, but everyone can still see you! We’re happy to provide that privacy for everyone.” By bringing San Carlo Resort to Second Life, Minnie Fae hopes for us to achieve bringing back that sense of community, “even if it is just a tiny bit”, and of course bringing a smile to people’s faces. “The world can be hard and cruel,” she says, “and if we can just bring in a little bit of sunshine with a virtual get away? For some artists who have built a reputation as an artist in real life, Second Life offers the chance to create a virtual reality that houses their work and at the same time allows them to live an immersive experience. Patrick Moya (Moya Janus in Second Life) is an acclaimed French artist with an impressive and extensive breadth of work that has lasted for over 40 years and includes dolls designed for UNICEF, ceramic sculptures, video and projection art as well as the work he did in Second Life at “Moya Land”. Moya Land is a space in which the French artist claims to be able to realize a dream: to be a character who lives within his work. It is interesting to listen to the artist’s experience from his point of view. So here are his words. “I have a studio in Nice and one in Monaco, but I live and work also in my four islands of Moya Land in Second Life. In 1974, when I was studying art, I reflected on the effects of interactive television on the future of art. I thought that with new media the creator would disappear in favor of the creature.

After my studies, I produced fine arts and tried to create utopia television. Then I started my work with the four letters of my name and created an avatar in my image. Later, to accompany this avatar, I created new characters. I also worked with the first available personal computers, but when I discovered Second Life I realized that I could realize a dream to be finally the character who actually lives inside his own work. I now have a large body of work and trying not to limit myself. I organized my islands as big cities with a museum, including a tower, a hospital, an old village, a chapel, and a university. There are even rebels who challenge Moya’s narcissism because here absolutely everything is made with my works. You have to come back several times to explore everything. There are self-service cars and a tram that goes around, but if I am present I will do a guided tour by car and plane starting at the tourist office”. Visiting the four islands of Moya (Moya Land), my attention was arrested by the space that the French artist dedicated to his exhibitions presented around the world. Several of these exhibitions have been exhibited in Italy.

Moya is in fact, as he himself says, an artist in everyday life. In SL he has found the possibility to realize his dream of seeing himself living in a world, a reality constituted by his own works.

Moya’s art is color, form, and movement. Through these three elements, the artist develops his idea. Moya is an artist who expresses himself using very different media: art films, billboards, ceramics, computers, conceptual art, drawings, the art of fashion, muralism, painting, the art of projection, sculpture and video art. His work has been inventoried in a catalog that includes over 4500 pieces over 40 years between 1971 and 2011. His work has been plastered on the mini-buses of the public transport system of Cannes, on cars (Porsche, Fiat 500, Deuxchevaux, Smart, Gordini), on cows of “Cow Parades” and cowbells, on designer clothes and promotional USB cards issued by the Hotel Martinez in Cannes, as well as by the famous French Michelin Guide.
Moya’s maxim is “to please everyone by remaining at the forefront; to be everywhere without wasting oneself; to touch every medium while remaining perfectly recognizable”. He credits his time as a nude model for his healthy degree of exhibitionism and narcissism that is duplicated as his cartoonish alter ego. The result is art that crosses generations and genres. His work is often described as positive and exultant.
Moya is one of the very few modern artists commissioned to paint a Catholic church dedicated to Saint Jean Baptiste in the clans. His frescoes are found in public buildings in Monaco (in particular the Princess Grace hospital), in a college (“La Bourgade” in La

Moya has become a digital artist since his first computer works in the mid-80s.
I believe that anyone visiting Moya Islands will experience a feeling of positivity, fantasy, and childlike enthusiasm. Lately, Linden Lab has been highlighting Patrick Moya in the pages of the Second Life Community.

aylor Wassep is a talented photographer and blogger. His flickr stream is as eclectic and unique as he is, where his photography varies from casual to kawaii, magical to the mundane and everything in between. As a premiere photographer, his work can be found in publications like Ferosh, Gallant Magazine and ECLIPSE Magazine. Taylor meet two of his closest friend through a photography application process for Ferosh Magazine. They didn’t really get to become close friends until a few months later during a meeting the magazine had. It was about their fashion weekend and Taylor was able to meet Sung and Absi. He also meet a close friend of his, Trouble Dethy on Zoha Island. He was looking for land for a friend and at that time Trouble was an EM for the sim. Currently the way Taylor meets new people would be through Flickr mostly. He would comment or message them directly about an appreciation for their photograph and it went off from there. He also usually finds people from going to niche events. Like, a place similar to The Crystal Heart Event. An event space that is beloved by many and the patrons share a love for the theme. oney considers herself an eccentric Jersey girl, spreading her love of pork roll, egg and cheese all the way from Florida. Recently, Second life has become a home away from home, where she can express herself freely in design and spend time with her friends. Not only did she just get back into blogging, but she spends time with her magical friends role-playing at Mischief Managed. The closest friends I have, I met in a mixture of places in various time slots of my Second Life; since 2009. My family, I of course met from Heritage; like most families in second life. My daughters, Aubree, Jenni, and Deliah have been with me for over 4 years now, and I can’t remember a time when they weren’t in my life. I also have my parents and my siblings from all over the grid, who I cherish even when we don’t get to spend much time with each other in SL. As for some of my other friends, I met a big group of them at Mischief Managed (MM), or through people at MM. MM has been a catalyst for me to find likeminded people that all enjoy doing the same thing I like to do; Harry Potter. Not everything we do is Harry Potter related though, We all are avid shoppers and designers in Second Life. As MM is ever-growing, I do occasionally meet new people on the sim, but sometimes I simply befriend people just by hanging around the friends I already have. As well as spending a lot of time looking for sims for photo opportunities or interior design shops. There are definitely different scenes in Secondlife; Roleplayers, ERP, and the Family Community to name a few. I have been in a little bit of everything, and the best way I found friends was putting myself out there a little more than I would normally. The more you flock to areas you enjoy, the more you will find your “people.” No matter how many times you “refresh” your time in this world, the easiest way to begin is to search your interests. elly has been in SL for almost 12 years now. She met her SL husband in RL and is married to him in both worlds. For fun, Melly enjoys blogging and shopping. Melly is a smartass and enjoys making others laugh, especially when they’re having a bad day.
In my many years in SL, the way I have met my closest friends has changed over time. Some of my longest friendships were built out of an old club that is no longer in business. Some of those friendships broke out into RL... I’d love to meet all of them in RL some day, we’ll see if that happens! After that, I met other friends through those same friends from the club, it was a snowball effect... the ball started rolling and that lead me to some of the best people in my life now. Ironically, these days, I have met most of my friends and very close friends through Facebook... I say that’s ironic because in a world (SL) that is supposed to bring people together from all over the world, currently the only way I meet new people is through Facebook interactions. With that said, I have met some seriously amazing people that way and have built an awesome support system that I don’t think I would have ever found otherwise. I don’t often leave my little blogger platform, for various reasons - I’m not up to date on the cool places to hang out and I’m super awkward in new situations. So really, thanks to Facebook, I have a new group of friends and hopefully some of those friendships will grow into strong, close bonds. Check out her Flickr and Blog.

I met most of my closest friends in SL working with them in the fashion community, doing photography and participating in runway shows, magazine shoots and most recently, in the MR SL pageant. I mostly keep to myself but these people impressed me with their intelligence, integrity and creativity, and the friendships arose organically due to shared interests - art and fashion, theater, cats and animals in general, cooking, and this shocking, gorgeous, perennially surprising universe we live in. I still keep to himself mostly! since I’m very busy with SL fashion activities and recently joined Rebel Yell Concerts Group as a performer, creating avatar look-alikes of rock stars and participating in tribute concerts of bands like AC/DC, Within Temptation and Skid Row. Sometimes I get out and go to hear live music or dance at In Transmission, Elysion, Smash-Wrench, and other clubs that play eclectic and interesting music . Never a boring moment! But I speak to the friends I have here almost every day on Facebook and inworld. It’s amazing who you can meet here. I love my friends in SL as much as anyone I’ve met in RL. Check out his Flickr.

f you just know a little about her, you will not expect the “Hi, I am Wicca Merlin, a model and blogger since 2008 and a SL designer since about 2013” and then throw a bunch of big names at you. What is more to the point is that she does what she loves in SL. She loves fashion, blogging and teaching/tutoring. she loves being creative with styles and discovered her love for designing and sometimes still makes poses. With her RL/SL partner she owns the brand Wicca’s Originals, where they create Original Mesh designs for about 2.5 years now. She is proud of what she has archived. Not because it tells her what a great person she is. It shows to her, that you can really succeed with doing what you love and how think it is right. She worked hard, had fights and there have been people trying to tell her what to do and what not to. She surely picked the harder way, but in her eyes it was worth it. She would rather have one person she admires saying WOW, than a thousand half.hearted OKs. The WOW is the benchmark in everything she does. She thinks that she owes it to herself, the people she represents as a designer, model, blogger, stylist, photographer or teacher and to her customers. I met a lot of great and good people in Second Life, but my closes friends I met in the fashion world in Second Life. On fashion events, runway shows, rehearsals, vendor shoots and all kind of fashion activities that happened every week and even on weekends. Even if most of us are only semi active as models since SL modeling kinda died, we still share a lot of time together these days and our connection is way deeper than just SL fashion. I did not meet many close friends in Second Life that made it through my 12 years of Second Life. Some left Second Life and we only have short conversations via discord or cellphone, others decided to leave me or I had to turn around (thank god not too many). But with those, that are still close to me, it is a very deep connection and wy more than SL - we share a lot of RL as well and I am grateful for their friendship that started as something virtual and now became reality (even if we not yet met maybe). Nowadays I do meet people while I am exploring sims for my pictures, if I am invited to SL exhibitions or events, at our store or when I go out shopping. I limited my time in SL drastically a few years ago and that as well is part of the fact that I am not anymore meeting as many people as I used to, but I still find free spirits, interesting people and wonderful friends on my little journeys that make my life more nice everyday. una Katiye, a very egocentric girl of second life who devoted her time on here Roleplaying, making avatars, and taking pictures. Luna join second life 9 years ago with a plan to make something of her second life experience, some say Luna is a bright and bubbly girl with a crazy and exotic style. She spends most of her times roleplaying at Mischief Managed a place her whole slife wraps around. From wands to cauldrons to quaffles to toil and trouble this little witch is a force to be reckoned with. When she isn’t roleplaying or taking photos she is off hanging out with her loving friends and even singing with them. Where did you meet your closest friends? Well my very first friend is Ava Goland, a quiet girl I meet when I was just hanging out one day at one of second life’s oldest teen grid, she was hanging out with one guy name soup and another guy named Vince. I found out later Ava was dating Soup and after that day we became kinda close friends, she brought me to Mischief Managed and started this super fascination for Harry Potter. Autumn and Dylan two people I can really call family, I meet them at Hogwarts both annoyed me a little but in a fun way when meeting them with Dylan he was someone I hated due to an incident but now I call him my brother and someone I can say I have their back till the day I die. Autumn my wonderful, gorgeous, and amazing sister she is something no one can explain this girl is creative, courageous, and Lana del Rey lover like myself. She is my best friend, my forever sister, my everything I love her to death. Rita I meet also at Hogwarts and quickly became friends with her finding out she loved the same dark things I do, I call her my bae sometimes. She is down to earth and down right crazy in a good way. Love your girl! Where do you meet people now? Um that’s really kind of a hard question. I mainly hang out at Hogwarts really but people flock to me from there mostly complimenting my characters and what not. All it takes for me is one compliment and you are my friend for life. But when I go explore I meet people of all shapes and form and rather enjoy seeing new and unique faces on second life. Check out her Flickr.

Artistry and creativity are at the foundation of everything we see and do in Second Life. The same is true for all we hear in Second Life. In showcasing residents and groups who embody the concept of “your world, your imagination,” Eclipse Magazine is honored to showcase Second Life’s amazing musical talent. In this month’s “Artist Highlight,” we shine the spotlight on Melenda Baptiste-Vyper and her amazing voice.

Some people come into Second Life knowing exactly what they are looking for. This was certainly not the case with Melenda Baptiste-Vyper. Managing a club in Second life seemed to be her calling until the club began a regular karaoke night, “I ended up having to run it and I was scared to death to sing in front of people. My sister started making me sing every night to her and slowly started bringing people in to listen to me. Over time, this made me less shaky in my voice but we were the ones that were singing most of the time. When I stopped working at this club I was bored and I was wandering SL. I popped into a little place called Cafe Musique for their open mic event and they asked if I wanted to sing. I decided, ‘Well why not,’ and gave it a try.” For Melenda, the rest is history after over three years of performing in Second Life. Depth and connection to the music are important factors for Melenda when choosing new music to learn. Despite listening to and appreciating all genres of music, she finds a depth in indie and acoustical songs that speak to her in a way many other genres don’t. “A lot of people will ask you to learn a song, tell you that you would sound great singing a particular song, or sometimes I will hear a song that I am like, ‘Oh! I love this!’” Despite those recommendations and feelings, she needs to feel the music within her. Without that connection though, she finds she is unable to perform that piece. Melenda says this can lead to a sound that “is all over the place. I do a lot of acoustical sounds, but I also do rock, ballads, country, modern, old, show tunes and....are you ready for this? I white girl rap. That’s right. I said I white girl rap. Anyone want to shoop?”

Even with her ventures into white girl rap, Melenda continues to come back to feeling connected with the music. “One of the most meaningful songs I sing is the song Naked by Ella Mai. After going through difficult times, I was opening myself up to someone really important again. My biggest fear was leaving myself, per-say, ‘naked’ for them to see and love. I stumbled across this song when we first started talking and sang it to them. It became our song and I even sang it to them at our wedding here in SL and when we met in real life as well. Luckily they have proven they definitely love me naked.” After three plus years of performing in Second Life, Melenda has certainly shown you can succeed by just being yourself. “The most honest advice I can give anyone thinking of a live music career in SL is to be yourself. Don’t try to fit into a mold of what everyone else does. There is so much talent out there and we are all unique in our own sound and style in what we do. We all bring something a little different to each of our shows and that is what makes SL live music such a great thing. Go out there, have fun with it and expect there to be a lot of highs and lows.” When not singing, Melenda can typically be found with her family and friends on the farm she and her partner have built together. Often surrounded by family and friends, Melenda loves to connect with those important playing games or tending to the farm together. She also spends time with her partner, whom she has also met in real life, watching movies together and preparing for their next visit together in real life. Check out Melenda’s schedule. “The Wayfarer” is a monthly feature showcasing some of the most aesthetic places in Second Life®. As of late, the Wayfarer had allowed idle thoughts and musings to consume his thoughts. One of which is what truly mattered to him. Perhaps, it was only poignant that his journey this month led him to Bartertown, a fragmented place at the very cusp of the world’s end. His feet tread heavily upon the worn dirt, where buildings and land spoke of a place that once was — before it no longer is, yet still it stood.
