Raising a family in a smaller school district, knowing the neighbors and being part of an active business for the community are all rewards of small town living. Pat Arnzen was born and raised in Sauk Centre. Her career in this close-knit community has allowed her the opportunity to make Sauk Centre her forever home, to raise her family here and flourish as a successful woman. Her path to a rewarding career began early on. While in high school, a job training counselor asked Arnzen if she’d be interested in taking a job as a bookkeeper at a local oil association. After graduation, she moved into the world of banking as a teller through United Federal Savings and Loan Association in October of 1981. In 1984, her career took a step forward after her bank became Washington Federal Savings and Loan, and she was promoted to office manager. Assisting youth in making better decisions was also a goal for a young Arnzen. In the late 1980s, she was a member of the Citizen Advisory Committee for the individuals in the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Sauk Centre. “We were their liaison. We spread the word about the good work that the correctional facility was doing there.” She has also played an active role in the Sauk Centre Chamber Board of Directors and has helped other local businesses find success and support in her community. One of the biggest rewards of Arnzen’s career is her opportunity to help other people. Being a lender in a local community has a big impact on the lives of her neighbors. “As a mortgage loan officer, I help young people buy their first home. It’s hard work to get everything qualified and everything they need. When they get to have their first home, it’s always so gratifying. On the flip side, you help people on the best of the times and the

worst of times. You get to sit down and help someone through a tough situation. Being a small community, you know the people. They are not just a number like they would be in a big bank. If they start missing a payment on their loan, a big bank will foreclose on the loan or repossess their vehicle. In a community bank, I know they were laid off, and we’re going to help them. I’ve had a lot of situations where I’ve had people in my office going through really tough situations. That’s a personal touch.” Arnzen also offers women an opportunity to sit down and discuss their financial needs with another woman. Although it is somewhat easier today to find a female loan officer, there was a time where very few women held the position as a bank lender. Now that she has 34 years into the banking industry, Arnzen is looking forward to retirement. She has thoroughly enjoyed having an opportunity to raise her family in her hometown and being an active and prominent member of her community. The next stage of her life and the roar of her Harley Davidson is calling. She will always have a desire to inspire other women to be successful and to make a difference in the lives of her neighbors.
