Curt & Dawn Richter build a home in the country where they are close to nature, and their vineyards

By ROBERTA OLSON Correspondent Some people might call it a rude awakening about 6 o’clock every morning, but to Curt and Dawn Richter the squawks of the neighborhood Sand Hill Cranes prancing right outside their bedroom window is just part of the reason they built their new home in the country.

They sure didn’t have nature up close and personal in their home in St. Cloud.

The Richters, along with their son, 2-year-old Jayden, have had a whirlwind year, planning and building their new home, which is located three miles south from the Long Prairie stoplight. The home is also located 10 miles away from an acre and a half of property owned by Dawn’s mom and stepdad which holds the Rich-

Dawn and Curt Richter sit at the island in the open concept kitchen-living-dining room in their brand new home. While they moved into the house in May, there are still lots of boxes to go through, they say. ters four-year-old vineyard.

Getting out of the city, and getting closer to their future Dragon Willow Winery vineyards and wine business, was the focus of 2015. Getting out of their tiny St. Cloud home was their goal. Because they already owned land, and had been planting vineyards in the area, it was a natural to make the final move.

Dawn spent 12 years working at the St. Cloud Police Department, and now works at Centerline Tank and Trailer in Long Prairie. When Curt, an IT specialist and private consultant, was laid off from his job four years ago, it was time to get serious about their win-

ery dreams, and to become an independent IT contractor.

Curt had been dabbling in brewing beer. “I’m not a big beer drinker,” says Dawn, “so I said make some wine.” That was eight years ago, and Curt started making wine, and he was really excited about the process. His interest blossomed into the winery, which has now been federally permitted, and is a year away from a full-fledged opening and production.

This year it was time to move the family to the country, to the vineyard, and back home for Dawn.
