Modular units become a comfy Wenker home

If the term “modular home” brings to mind visions of prefabricated, cookie-cutter style, box shaped homes, then you are invited to drive along Fifth Avenue Northwest in Melrose to see if you can guess which home is the neighborhood’s factory-built residence.

Chances are you won’t be able to pick it out.

A hint: It’s the year-old home of Pat and Mary Wenker, their two daughters and two dogs.

It’s the pale green and tan home with the double peaked rooflines over the front entry; the L-shaped home with the beautiful patio and perennial garden ambling through the trees in the backyard.

“We didn’t want to stand out in the neighborhood,” says Pat of their choice of a modular home.

They placed the home on a full basement, and added a 28x56 four-stall garage that runs two stalls deep, so they didn’t have to cut down too many trees. A large patio was added at the corner of the L created where the house and garage join, that looks out on the girls’ playground, and onto the landscaped perennial garden between their home and their neighbor’s home.

The Wenkers decided to buy a modular home last year. They were looking for a home to suit their growing family, and because Mary had grown up in a modular home, they were open to the modular plan.

Fall foliage may make for ideal photo backdrops and scenic days in the countryside, but closer to home leaves may be more of a hindrance than an aesthetic pleasure.

The hundreds of leaves that adorn the maples, oaks and other trees near homes will eventually fall as autumn turns into winter.

Some will float down to lawns, while others will get lodged in gutters and downspouts, posing problems that can cause substantial and potentially costly problems for homeowners.

Homeowners know that gutter cleaning is an important part of fall home maintenance, but they may not completely understand why. Gutter cleaning can be a messy and time-consuming project, making it a project many homeowners are apt to put off.

Waiting to clean gutters can lead to considerable problems, so it’s best to tackle the job well in advance of the winter.

As thousands of children prepare to embark on their trick-or-treating jaunts in neighborhoods near and far, it is best to once again revisit safety tips that can help ensure this Halloween is enjoyable and injury-free.

• Visibility: Visibility is key when donning a Halloween costume. Children should be dressed in highly visible costumes so drivers can easily see them. Parents and chaperones also should be dressed in bright colors. Reflective tape and flashlights also make pedestrians more visible to oncoming cars.

• Routes: Children and adults should plan their trick-or-treating routes ahead of time. This way children can be found quickly if they are separated from their groups, and parents can choose safe neighborhoods. Choose neighborhoods and paths that have the least

amount of automobile traffic.

• Walk, don’t run. Trick-ortreaters should stick to sidewalks and only cross the street at intersection crosswalks. Make sure kids know to avoid darting out between cars or cutting across lawns and driveways. When darkness sets in, fast-moving children can be difficult to see.

• Visit only lit houses. Residents who don’t want to answer the door will typically leave their homes’ exterior lights off. Only visit homes that are decorated, bright and welcoming to trick-or-treaters.

• Go in groups. Children should go out in groups and always be accompanied by an adult chaperone.

• Costume safety: Everyone should wear well-fitted costumes that do not drag on the floor or impede mobility. Choose face paint over masks so that vision is not obscured.

• Beware of fire hazards. Keep clear of jack-o-lanterns that are lit by real flames. Homeowners can

opt for LED lights or other, safer methods of illumination rather than candles and open flames.

Dry ice changes from a solid to a gas with no liquid form, through a process of sublimation. Place dry ice in punch bowls or beverage glasses. Or use dry ice in any other liquid to create billowing plumes of vapor that add to the spooky effects. Just be

sure to handle dry ice very carefully and make sure it is inaccessible to curious kids.

• Smoke machine: Rent or purchase smoke machines, which can be found at party stores or big box retailers, to add to your eerie atmosphere. Dim the lights and have smoke rolling through the party room or by the front door.

• Lightning and thunder kits: These kits combine strobe lights or lighting effects with sound systems to simulate the sounds and sights of a thunderstorm.

• Faux cobwebs: Purchase spiderweb kits at retailers or make your own with cotton. Pure cotton balls can be pulled apart and stretched over various items in the house to create a spiderweb effect.

• Accent lighting: Drape a nonflammable piece of fabric over a
