Isanti County Many Faces • March 2013
Welcome to Many Faces of Isanti County We are pleased to present this year’s edition of the Many Faces of Isanti County. Please use this community guide as you enjoy your travels across Isanti County. This community guide provides a wealth of information including listings of businesses, organizations, government agencies, school districts, athletic/sporting clubs, child care centers, churches, senior living communities, health care facilities, city maps, parks, law enforcement agencies, fire departments and more. We hope you have something fun that you like to do and make living in Isanti County enjoyable. Maybe it’s attending the Isanti County Fair, Isanti Rodeo/Jubilee Days, or Braham Pie Day, or going for a family bike ride along the Cambridge-Isanti Bike/Walk Trail, golfing on one of the area golf courses or fishing on one of the area’s many lakes. Whatever it is, there is a lot to see and do in Isanti County. Isanti County is also home to one of the top 10 BMX tracks in the country, one of the area’s largest soccer complexes and the area’s only wakeboard park, all located in the city of Isanti. This is why we gather all of this information and put it into the Many Faces of Isanti County community guide.

This guide is perfect for long time residents, those who just moved here, or those just visiting the area. We would like to thank all of the advertisers in the Many Faces of Isanti County guide. Without them, we would not be able to publish this book. Please take the time to patronize these businesses as a way of thanking them for this book. We would also like to thank the news team at the Isanti County News, the sales team for working hard again on this year’s book, and all the governmental agencies and other organizations in the area for providing information to us. Also, thank you to Darcy Bodin, who spends endless hours in the production and layout, making sure the Many Faces of Isanti County is the best it can be. With so many events, organizations and things to do in Isanti County, we know we haven’t included all of you. Since we publish this book yearly, we regret that we might have missed you this year. Please email jeff. andres@ecm-inc.com before next February and we will make sure we include you in next year’s book. We hope you find this book useful in your travels in and around Isanti County.

City of Cambridge
Cambridge was founded in 1866 with a name carried from New England and a population carried from Sweden. The city flourished with its combination of burgeoning businesses on the Rum River and sedulous Swedes. Today it is the county seat for Isanti County and a bustling commercial hub for the east central region of Minnesota. Cambridge City Council is comprised of a mayor and four council members. All members serve four-year, staggered terms, so elections are held every two years. Municipal elections are non-partisan and members are elected at-large. Cambridge also employs a city administrator which is a nonelected position to handle administrative functions. Council members do not hold administrative power individually, but as a unit the council has full authority over administrative processes. The council is responsible for city ordinances, managing Cambridge’s financial operations, and appointing administrative personnel and commission members. The council also serves as the Economic Development Authority. In that capacity they market Cambridge and its industrial parks to companies from around the world, administer housing policies for Bridge Park Apartments, and work to enhance the city’s economy. In addition to her role in the council, the mayor serves as the city representative to the Minnesota legislature, federal agencies and other city governments. She is also the official head of the city and responsible for declaring emergencies. Council meetings are held the first Monday of each month at 3 p.m. and the third Monday at 6 p.m. at Cambridge City Hall, located at 300 Third Ave NE. Questions can be directed to 763-689-3211.

Cambridge Police/Fire Departments The Cambridge Police Department employs 13 full-time officers, one full-time secretary, one part-time transcriptionist and 12 volunteer reserves. The officers are responsible for criminal investigations into matters like suspicious deaths, narcotics and property crimes, among other things. They also serve the city on patrol, providing assistance to citizens and enforcing state and local laws. The department has one designated School Resource Officer. This officer strives to reduce crime in Cambridge schools and establish healthy relationships between students, educators and the police. Cambridge Police began the Reserve Officer program in 2004, training citizens to serve as support officers in special circumstances. These officers are crucial to the department during the region’s many crowded events, like parades and Fourth of July celebrations. The Cambridge Fire Department has 30 paid, on-call members. For equipment, the department boasts three pumpers, three grass trucks, one ladder truck, two water tenders, and two quick response vehicles. Our state certified firefighters proudly serve our community with fire suppression, technical rescue, high angle rope rescue, confined space rescue, first responders, search & rescue, auto extrication, hazmat operations, and decontamination. Our 1000 square foot emergency operations center offers cutting edge technology with dedicated voice and data, interactive smart
board, and hi-performance multi station computers. Fire Chief Sean Okerlund can be contacted at 763-286-8633.

Cambridge Swedish Festival
Page 9
Cambridge Swedish Festival says Välkommen!
Cambridge is the most Swedish city for towns over 5000 according to the 2000 US Census. Area residents remember and celebrate that heritage through events sponsored by the Cambridge Swedish Festival a.k.a. the Nordic Culture Connection. The goals of the Cambridge Swedish Festival are to raise awareness of Swedish culture and heritage and to strengthen connections between Sweden and Swedish- Americans by sharing experiences and information. There will soon be more expanding goals that embrace all of the Nordic countries through culture, heritage, and arts programming. In 2010 the festival planners voted to come under the umbrella of CHEF, the Cambridge Humanities and Education Foundation of Minnesota. Through CHEF the Cambridge Swedish Festival will continue to offer a variety of events featuring Swedish music, children’s activities, traditional foods, and interest sessions on Swedish culture, arts, and heritage throughout the year. The weeklong festival is in hiatus. Area residents should pay attention to notices in the local media about concerts by Nordic performers. Cambridge Medical Center names Gary Shaw new president effective May 6 Allina Health is pleased to announce that Gary Shaw has accepted the position of Cambridge Medical Center president. Shaw is currently a hospital leader in Anchorage, Alaska. He will assume his new position in Cambridge on May 6. “Gary impressed those he met during the interview process with his deep understanding for the role of community healthcare and his experience work- Gary Shaw will assume ing in a variety of organi- the role of president of zations,” said Karl Elser, Cambridge Medical CenDO, and chair of the search ter on May 6. committee. “We are confident he will be a strong addition to the leadership team at CMC, fitting well with our culture and our Allina values.” Shaw has more than 25 years of healthcare leadership experience. He is now the administrator of the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska, a 150-bed Level II trauma center. During his leadership of Alaska Native Medical Center, the medical center’s primary care arm, Southcentral Foundation, was awarded the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Malcolm Baldrige Quality Award. “To be successful in the changing healthcare environment I believe physician and staff integration is key,” Shaw said. “Cambridge enjoys an attractive rural model that possesses all of the elements I was looking for: integrated providers, solid physician leadership, proactive staff, great community, and proximity to a metro area.” Prior to his position in Alaska, Shaw was the vice president of operations at Bayhealth Medical Center, Delaware. He served as the CEO of Billings Clinic/North Big Horn Hospital in Lovell, Wyoming and later as the corporate director, regional operations for the same system of hospitals and clinics. Shaw began his healthcare career as a
Navy corpsman and traveled all over the world during his military service. He spent many years as a naval officer and administrator of Navy hospitals in Florida and Tennessee. “As a proven leader, Gary focuses on excellence in patient care,” said Sara Criger, Senior Vice President, Mercy Hospital and Search Committee member. “Those of us who interviewed him found several things set him apart — his commitment to delivering quality services to all patients, his strategic vision for the future, his ability to turn that vision into real actions and his capacity to build lasting relationships with patients, physicians, staff and the community.” Gary and his wife, Trisha, have two grown children and a grandchild. They plan to reside in the Cambridge area. “I believe best performing organizations obtain their results because they attract and retain great people. Isanti Police/Fire Departments Isanti Police Department
The dedication of the Isanti Police Department can never be forgotten. Isanti’s Dahlin Avenue is named for Marshal Frank Dahlin, an officer who was shot and killed in the line of duty while attempting to apprehend a burglary. Dahlin passed away on December 23, 1926, but his memory will be forever honored in Isanti. Dahlin is an example of the level of integrity and service the Isanti Police force strives to uphold to this day. The department is staffed by eight full-time officers, including Chief Ron Sager and Lt. Gene Hill, as well as seven part-time officers, two administrative employees and 11 reservists. The Isanti Police Department also contracts with the school district to provide an on-site School Resource Officer. For transportation and patrol the Isanti Police Department uses three Dodge Chargers. The department also owns two Chevrolet pickup trucks, which were added to the fleet at no tax-payer cost since they were forfeited by the previous owners after drunk driving convictions. The Police Department is located at 401 1st Ave. N in Isanti. The office is open from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Chief Ron Sager can be reached via email at Chiefsager@cityofisanti.us. In a non-emergency, the office number is 763444-4761. In the event of an emergency always dial 911. Isanti Area Fire District The Isanti Area Joint Powers Agreement Fire District now covers 195 square miles of area in Spencer Brook,
Stanford, Bradford, Athens and Oxford Townships, as well as the city of Isanti. Within those areas, 16,332 recorded people receive fire and rescue services from three different Isanti Fire District stations. Isanti Fire Station number 1 is located in the city of Isanti at 401 1st Ave. North. Station 2 is located at 4891 Co. Rd. 5 NW in Spencer Brook Township and Station 3 is located at 4243 269th Ave. NE in Athens Township. Twenty-five members currently staff the three stations across the approximate southern half of Isanti County. All 25 members are currently certified by the National Registry at a minimum standard of First Responder and Minnesota Fire Certification Board Firefighter 1. Together the 25 members have a total of 246 years of experience on the Isanti Fire Department. In 2012, the 25 members responded to a total of 704 fire and rescue calls, of which they averaged a response time of 7 minutes. The Insurance Services Office (ISO) has recently evaluated the Fire Departments overall effectiveness, which has resulted in a lowered Public Protection Class rating of 4 in areas serviced by a hydrant, and 7 in designated rural areas. The 37th Annual Isanti Fireman’s PRCA Pro Rodeo is scheduled for July 12-13, 2013. More information about the Rodeo and other Fire Department business can be found at www.isantifiredistrict.org or by finding them on Facebook.

City of Braham
Isanti County Many Faces • March 2013
Braham, with its population of 1,812, is the northernmost of the three major cities in Isanti County, sitting on Hwys. 65 and 107. The inspiration for the city’s unique name remains unclear: some maintain the moniker is a reverent tribute to the heroic U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, while others insist it is an affectionate nod to Abraham Swenson, one-time owner of the land the city sits on today. Despite the name dispute, no one can accuse Braham of an identity crisis. To this day the town remains dedicated to its history, its vibrant sense of community and perhaps most importantly, its panoply of pies, and famous Pie Day, held annually on the first Friday in August. Braham is governed by a five-member city council. Four of the council members serve four-year terms, while the mayor serves two years per term. The council meets the first Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. at City Hall, located at 201 S Broadway Ave. City Hall is open on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and also contains the Braham Police Department and Fire Hall. City Hall is also the meeting place for the Planning Commission, which meets periodically on the last Wednesday of every the month at 6 p.m. The city administrator is Sally Hoy. Braham Police/Fire Departments Braham has had its own police department since the late 1950s, but instead of looking back on a half-century of success this department is focused and committed to preserving the safety and well being of the city and its residents well into the future. The Braham Police Department is staffed by three fulltime patrolmen, six part-time patrolmen, a transcriber and nine non-sworn police reservists from the community. The department is directed by Chief Robert Knowles. The officers provide full service police protection, conduct investigations, provide crowd control and assist
Page 17
the public with vehicle lockouts. Braham PD also assists with Isanti County’s Safety Camp and Braham’s Pie Day activities. For equipment, the department has four fully equipped squad cars and one Police Reserve Unit squad car. The Braham Fire Department comprises 21 volunteer members, 15 of whom serve as first responders. Braham firefighters respond to all medical and fire emergencies in the coverage area. The department uses three grass rigs, two pumpers, two tankers, one rescue truck and one slough pumper. Jeff Jones serves as fire chief.
Braham Police can be contacted at 320-396-3383 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. On nights and weekends, please contact through the Isanti County Sheriff’s Department Dispatch, which can be reached at 763-689-2141. To contact the Braham Fire Department, call 320-396-3800 or for more information e-mail brahamfiredepartment@live.com. For Emergency Dial 911.
Braham Pie Day Braham got its first taste of fame in the 1930s as cabin-bound travelers from the Twin Cities got their first tastes of Braham’s pies. Before long it was common knowledge that in order to make the trip from the Cities to Duluth a vacationer would have to take the “shortcut” through Braham to fill up on pie and coffee at the Park Café. The craving eventually spread to the state capitol, and in 1990 Governor Rudy Perpich declared Braham the “Homemade Pie Capital of Minnesota.” The city received a tourism grant to fund a community festival and before you could say “à la mode,” Pie Day was born. The culture of pie is going to be reinvented for the 24th time on August 2, 2013. Pie Day will feature an art show, a pie trivia contest, an amateur pie-baking contest, and the 11th annual Sweet as Pie Car Show, featuring vintage and collector cars. There will also be two of the traditional pie-eating contests, in which a competitor must eat an entire blueberry pie in under two minutes (winners receive a little fame, a little shame and a belly full of pie). Children are invited to the Kids ‘N Berries Tent just south of the bandshell in Freedom Park, where they can enjoy arts and crafts related to pie. Everyone can write a pie-ku, and compete for the title of Pie Poet Laure-
ate. Adults can combat calories preemptively with a one-mile walk at 9 a.m. with Nature’s Way Chiropractic Clinic before they set in to sample more than 1,000 pies. To find out more information on Pie Day and the events, call 320-396-4956, visit www.pieday.com or visit Pie Day on Facebook. Anyone interested may take part in the pie-making process on July 24 and 26 and Aug. 1 at the Braham Area High School kitchen. To volunteer, call 320-396-2089. Getting involved is as easy as... you know.

Cambridge looks forward to new business openings in 2013 Rachel Kytonen Isanti County News
The city of Cambridge saw many signs of economic development success in 2012. One project the city had been working on since March 2008 came to fruition. National Recycling, Inc. (NRI) and Industrial Support Services, Inc (ISSI) opened its newly constructed metals recycling retail drop-off center and metal fabrication in Cambridge in April 2012. National Recycling, Inc. is located at 1505 11th Ave. NE, in the Cambridge Opportunity Industrial Park. The Cambridge facility has state-of-the-art scales and convenient drive-thru service, as well as a host of efficient processes to facilitate full service metals recycling. The facility is 45,496 square feet and was constructed by BJ Baas Builders, Inc. of Cambridge. The facility also has a security system, staff offices, and a comfortable customer waiting area. City staff were stunned with some unfortunate news when they came into the office on Aug. 15 and learned via fax that Lowe’s Home Improvement Store had closed its doors after two years in the community. “We had a real estate consultant come in and tell us don’t be surprised if the building sits vacant the next five to seven years,” said Economic Development Director Stan Gustafson. “However, after the store closed, we worked with Opus and various developers and received some indicators that a couple of large companies were interested in the building so we worked hard and stayed positive.” The hard work paid off. In September, Mills Fleet Farm appeared before the Cambridge Planning Commission and City Council with the intention of opening a store in the former Lowe’s building. Mills Fleet Farm is remodeling the existing Lowe’s facility, with the east side of the building remodeled for the auto service station.
Mills Fleet Farm is planning to open in October in the former Lowe’s building on the east side of Cambridge.
Fleet Farm also purchased an additional five acres to the north of the existing property for an open yard merchandise sales floor. Additional land was purchased south of the property for a convenience store and fuel station and an automated car wash. “Mills Fleet Farm knew there’s a market in our area for a Fleet Farm and as a city we wanted to make this work,” said Gustafson. “Mills Fleet Farm is a family-owned business that we are hoping will be in the Cambridge community for a long
Isanti County Many Faces • March 2013
time.” Gustafson said Fleet Farm is planning to open in October 2013. “Mills Fleet Farm is a family store, and there’s something in the store for everyone,” said Gustafson. “It was a real adrenaline rush to get the process moving forward for Fleet Farm.” Another store the Cambridge community is looking forward to seeing open later this year is Aldi grocery store. Gustafson said Aldi’s The reader board based at is planning to start con- Mills Fleet Farm will instruction later this spring, clude the listing of other with a fall 2013 opening. tenants in the area, such as Aldi will also be located on the east side of Cambridge Kohl’s and Aldi, as well as near Mills Fleet Farm. This community events. is another project that has taken years to bring it to this level. There was also a lot of activity in 2012 with the industrial and manufacturing businesses in Cambridge. Gustafson explained Water Works Manufacturing completed a 33,745 square foot expansion, with the business employing over 200 people. Park Manufacturing completed a 36,120 square foot expansion, and Arrow Tank is adding an additional 11,136 square foot expansion. We are excited to see the increase in new home construction with 15 new home permits pulled in 2012. “I think we had a pretty good last year, and I think 2013 will even be better with the opening of Mills Fleet Farm and Aldi,” said Gustafson. “As a city, we’ve been very busy and we always strive to promote and market the city in a positive way. This is a real rewarding position, and I feel fortunate to be able to work with such a great group of people who truly care about the community.”
Park Manufacturing, located on S. Garfield St. in Cambridge, celebrated its recent expansion with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, Jan. 16. The expansion essentially doubled the manufacturing area of the company which creates highquality wire harnesses, custom cable assemblies and electromechanical assemblies. Said Cambridge Mayor Marlys Palmer (holding the scissors in the photo), “The City of Cambridge is very proud to have Park Manufacturing in our progressive and caring community. We sincerely acknowledge Park Manufacturing for its investment in Cambridge and the many opportunities they provide for employment. We wish continued success to our ‘good neighbor’ Park Manufacturing of Cambridge.”

Isanti County Sheriff’s Office The Isanti County Sheriff ’s Office provides a variety of services throughout the county and beyond through its various units. The office employs three sergeants and 12 deputies to make sure the county is patrolled 24 hours a day. All are required to meet Licensed Minnesota Peace Officer standards and receive annual training in matters like the use of force and firearm use. In addition to law enforcement, the deputies’ duties include serving civil process papers, transporting prisoners and providing court security when necessary. The department also provides K9 services and a Special Response Team. It also now uses Advanced Correctional Healthcare for all jail medical services. The Investigations Unit consists of three specially trained deputies that handle the region’s complex crimes, covert drug operations and response to any death scene not involving hospice care. It is also part of the East Central Drug/Violent Offenders Task Force, along with Chisago and Pine counties The Sheriff ’s Office also contains the county jail. Originally built in 1984, the jail was expanded in 2003 to raise the holding potential from 39 prisoners to 112. The facility is staffed by 28 correction officers, one jail administrator

Recycling made easy in Isanti County Keeping a separate container for empty pop cans may seem inconvenient, and old newspapers stack up in a hurry. To make it a little easier, East Central Sanitation offers single-sort recycling, meaning customers no longer have to separate different materials before setting them out for pickup. And speaking of pickup, curbside pickup of recycling is included with ECS garbage service. You can also drop off your recycling free of charge on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon if you are not currently signed up for garbage service. ECS was founded in 1969 and has been taking care of the region’s recycling needs for the past 20 years.

Isanti County History The region we know today as Isanti County was originally settled by lumberjacks from New England, migrating westward with their families in search of fresh trees to harvest. The combination of flourishing forests and the commercial fecundity of the Rum River caused the community to boom, drawing a steady influx of immigrants from Sweden and Germany who came seeking religious freedom and fortune. On February 13, 1857, Isanti County was officially born. As the once-dense woods waned, the livelihood of most people shifted to farming, particularly potato farming. Spencer Brook grew to be the largest town in the county, ahead of an assembly of small, crossroad communities. The arrival of the railroad to Isanti County in 1899, however, would bring major change to the area. Cambridge supplanted Spencer Brook as the foremost city and the latter, along with the crossroad communities, eventually faded away. Braham, Isanti and Grandy, in turn, were all birthed by the tracks. Modern Isanti County continues to grow, with a 25 percent population increase in the last 10 years to a current estimated population of 39,105 people. Isanti County is divided into districts represented by an elected board of commissioners, which currently consists of George Larson (District 1, 2014), Larry Southerland (District 2, 2016), Greg Anderson (District 3, 2016), Mike Warring (District 4, 2016) and Susan Morris (Dis-
trict 5, 2014). Other elected officials include County Attorney Jeff Edblad, who serves as legal advisor to the county board and commissions and as prosecutor on felony and gross misdemeanor counts. County Auditor Terry Treichel handles receipt and payment of county claims, payroll, voter registration and fishing, hunting and driver’s licenses. Sheriff Russ Monson oversees the Sheriff ’s Department and county jail. County Administrator Kevin VanHooser assists the board of commissioners with operations. He is also responsible for the management of county employees. The Isanti County Government Center is located at 555 18th Ave SW in Cambridge. Board meetings take place the first and third Wednesday of the month. For more information visit www.co.isanti.mn.us.

Legacy Park paves a trail for future generations in Isanti
Page 21
The city of Isanti hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday, Oct. 2, to celebrate the opening of Legacy Park. Adults pictured, from left, are City Council Member Steve Lundeen, Isanti Area Chamber of Commerce Board Member Danna Demo, Isanti Area Chamber of Commerce President Tracy Neifert, Isanti Planning and Parks Director Lisa Wilson, Isanti Parks and Recreation Board Member Kimberly Horst, Bolton & Menk Engineer Jason Cook, Isanti Mayor George Wimmer and Isanti Economic Development Director Sean Sullivan. The pedestrian trail is made from crushed limestone, and Mayor Wimmer said the city plans to install picnic tables in various spots throughout the park. The total project cost is not to exceed $113,000, paid for by Park and Recreation Department dedication funds, he said. There will be signs posted not only about the flora and fauna, but also about the history of the area, including information about Native American artifacts. The Legacy Park trail can be accessed just north of Bellaire Boulevard NW and Blossom Boulevard NW. Photo by Elizabeth Sias Elizabeth Sias Isanti County News
The year 2012 marked a major milestone for the city of Isanti. The 21-acre Legacy Park in the northwest region of the city opened in the fall, paving the way for generations to enjoy the protected, scenic land complete with trails. The park started as an area that was part of the Villages on the Rum development . “It’s just beautiful in that area,” Isanti Mayor George Wimmer said. “I want to preserve as much natural area as we can.” The city hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony Oct. 2 to celebrate the opening of the Legacy Park Trail, a pedestrian path made from crushed limestone and natural turf
that winds through the park and along a creek. “People have access to it and can enjoy it, but it stays in as much of a natural state as possible and is reserved for future generations,” Wimmer said. The area with the park was a perfect location to preserve, he said. It would have been difficult and costly to develop, it has a creek running through it and it borders the Rum River. Wimmer suggested the name Legacy Park himself. “It is a legacy for future generations,” he explained. “This is a rural community and there’s a lot of natural area around us, a lot of farm land around us. As we continue to build and develop, that’s all going to disappear. It might be hard to imagine that now, but in 30 to 50 years, this whole area is going to be built up. ... We have to preserve that continued on page 22

legacy for future generations, and that’s what we’ve done.” The biggest expense was installing the culverts in the creek. Fish swim up and spawn in the spring, so the trail construction couldn’t interrupt the flow of the creek. Wimmer said the city plans to install benches and picnic tables in various spots throughout the park this spring. There will be signs posted not only about the flora and fauna, but also about the history of the area, including information about Native American artifacts. Hundreds of people used the trail within the first few months of opening. “We’ve received more positive comments on this project than anything I’ve done since I’ve been here,” Wimmer

said. He said he has a favorite spot in the park near the creek. “It’s very relaxing, very calm. It’s just mystical and beautiful. You could sit in there and read a book. It’s just quiet. It’s a little piece of heaven.” The city anticipates expanding Legacy Park to the north in the future, with a goal of reaching about 100 acres of preserved land. The Legacy Park Trail can be accessed just north of Bellaire Boulevard NW and Blossom Boulevard NW. “I think this is something we should have done a long time ago with that land up there,” Parks Director Lisa Wilson said. “It’s beautiful. People love it. It’s just gorgeous. It’s something definitely to be proud of moving forward.”

Isanti Rodeo/Jubilee Days
Jubilee Days It’s never too early to save the date for Isanti’s Rodeo/Jubilee Days. There will definitely be something for the young, as well as those ‘young at heart’ during the 2013 Isanti Rodeo/Jubilee Days July 11-14. The kick-off for this year’s festivities is 2013 Isanti Parade, brought to you by the Isanti Area Chamber of Commerce, is set for Thursday, July 11 at 6:30 p.m. Each year the parade features around 200 floats and proves to be the best in the area. The parade showcases area marching bands, community organizations and businesses, classic cars and tractors, area non-profit organizations and churches and many others. Isanti’s streets are filled during the parade, so get there early to get a good seat. Parade organizer Brian Strike is looking for sponsorships to support this year’s parade. If interested, contract Strike at 612-308-7089. Also on Thursday, the Isanti Area Chamber of Commerce will host its 30th annual pig and turkey roast, to be held at the Isanti Community Center from 3 to 6 p.m. Most of the Saturday, July 13 activities will once again be held on Isanti’s Main Street and behind Isanti City Hall. Saturday features Kids’ Day games and activities from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Events include free kids games, pony rides, obstacle course, turtle races and the Isanti Lions corn feed. Visit the craft vendors and food vendors. Financial sponsorships are needed to help fund these activities. Contact Sue Beckman at 763-691-6035 on sponsorship information. The annual Kiddie Parade will be held on Saturday morning beginning at the Faith Lutheran Church parking lot on Main Street. celebrated this year on Main Street at 2 p.m. Watch local teams compete with their “special outhouses.” Fast paced obstacles make the races extremely competitive. Cash prizes are awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. The celebration wraps up with the 2013 Isanti Ambassador Coronation Ceremony on Sunday, July 14, at the Isanti Middle School. Watch the 2013 Isanti Ambassadors crowning moments and find out who is going to represent the community of Isanti at different festivals and parades across the state the next year. If interested in more information regarding 2013 Isanti Jubilee Days activities, contact Chair Dave Englund at 763-444-6432. and brush a mite of mud on those boots so they look like they’ve been worn since last year. The rodeo is coming to town. Tom Pagel, longtime volunteer firefighter, has served as chairman of the Isanti Firefighter’s Rodeo since 1978. In that time he’s watched the hometown rodeo grow into one of the top social events of the summer for Isanti County. Now in its 37th year, the rodeo is the second longest running Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association sanctioned rodeo in the state, and one of the largest rodeos in the region. As such, it features favorite rough stock events like bull riding, saddled bronco riding and bareback riding and timed events like barrel racing, calf roping and teaming roping. But the rodeo has come to offer much more, with appeal for the rugged roper and the tenderfoot alike. Many come for the dance offered both nights of the rodeo, which this year will feature Sterns County 17 on Friday evening and Iron Horse on Saturday evening. But the real benefit of the rodeo comes after the festivities are packed away, according to Pagel. “All of the proceeds we’ve ever made on the rodeo go back into the community,” Pagel said. “Nobody makes a penny on it.” The money raised from the rodeo is used by the fire department to maintain operations and enhance services. The 2013 rodeo performances will take place Friday, July 12 and Saturday, July 13 at the Isanti Rodeo Grounds. Mutton Bustin’ will also be held this year.

The Origins of Isanti County For centuries, the natural offerings of the land comprising Isanti County drew settlers, both Native American and white. Going back some 16,000 years, two gigantic glaciers – the Superior Lobe from the northeast and the Des Moines Lobe from the west – collided northwest of St. Cloud, creating a glacial lake called Lake Grantsburg which covered all of Isanti County. It deposited a mix of silty clay soil on the northern part of the county and huge sand piles on the southern end, known as the Anoka Sand Plain. Moraines (land ridges), rivers and lakes were also left by the receding glaciers. The Rum River was the main drainage route for the county, supplied by tributaries Spencer Brook, Upper and Lower Stanchfield Creeks, and Cedar Creek. As years passed, a dense forest covered the land. Red and white oak, white birch, sugar maple, basswood, elm, tamarack, cherry and wild plum are among the trees which took root. Native Americans likely immigrated north through the Mississippi Valley, and projectile points and stone hammers dating back to perhaps 5,000 B.C. were found near Spring Lake and Lake Francis. The first white explorers to step foot in Isanti County were probably Radisson and Grossliers in 1655 and 1659, and Father Hennepin in 1680. Four tribes of Sioux inhabited this area, known as the Santee, Isanyati or Isantees (“isan” in Sioux means “knife”). Maple sugar and cranberry-filled marshes were abundant, as were game and fish. The Santees also planted a variety of vegetables. In the mid 1700s, the Ojibway (Anishinabe) moved into the area, pushed westward by other natives and white set-

tlers. Armed with muskets, they drove the Santees to the west and south, settling into the county with their wigwams after decisive battles were won along the shores of Mille Lacs Lake. As late as 1839 north of Anoka, one last victory assured Ojibway dominance of the area. Lumber rush leads to white settlement In 1847, lumber cruiser Daniel Stanchfield traversed the Rum, locating a huge stand of white pine four miles northeast of Cambridge. His reports of unlimited timber brought lumbermen from his native state of Maine and other Eastern states. These New Englanders named most of the towns and townships after the places they left behind: Cambridge, Athens, Oxford, Stanford and Spring Vale. Spencer Brook was named for Judge Spencer, who located a hunters’ camp at the outlet of Blue Lake around 1854. Elbridge G. Clough and Ben McKenzie settled in Spencer Brook in 1857 as the thriving community took on a New England air. Clough’s son, David, would later become the president of the State Agricultural Society, a state senator and the 13th governor of Minnesota. In October 1856, the city of Cambridge was first platted. On Feb. 13, 1857 Isanti County was officially separated from Ramsey County and was organized as a government unit. Comprising the first Board of Commissioners were E.G. Clough, Oscar Smith and Hugh Wylie. George L. Henderson was the first sheriff. Cambridge was designated the county seat, and the U.S. Land Office was moved there from Stillwater in 1858.

The Isanti Area Chamber of Commerce is a notfor-profit organization with the purpose of helping our members and the community prosper. We serve the Isanti County area. The Chamber provides access to resources you might not otherwise have, and that access means power; the power to improve our community; the power to make your voice heard; the power to grow and succeed. Our Chamber of Commerce is compiled of businesses, civic organizations, and public entities that have joined to promote a healthy business climate and work to improve the community in which we live and work. We provide opportunities for our members to develop economically, while creating a positive environment in which to conduct business. We have a variety of programs that promote members, provide
name recognition, and help you or your business prosper. Most importantly, the Chamber of Commerce is PEOPLE. People who realize that through the Chamber they can accomplish collectively what would be difficult to provide individually. The strength of the Chamber lies in attracting the greatest number of members, creating a pool of resources from which ideas, energy, and finances can be drawn. The Isanti Area Chamber of Commerce is a member of other organizations, designed to provide added benefits to your membership, as well as being part of the larger business community and forming a working relationship with other local chambers.
Go to www.isantichamber.com for a continuously updated Calendar of Events. The Third Wednesday of each month at 11:30 a.m. is “Members Luncheon” featuring speakers with various topics related to business and the community. This luncheon is open to all who wish to attend. Left to right: Cathy Nelson, Erica Wilson, Dawn Tschumper, Helen Rosing, Greg Hunt, Elizabeth Sias, Regional General Manager Jeff Andres, Sue Beckman, Tonya Orbeck, Neil Anderson, Shana Bouley, Regional Sales Manager Jerry Gloe, and Rachel Kytonen. The Isanti County News is your trusted news source for the communities of Cambridge, Isanti and Braham. We are the 2013 legal newspapers for these cities, in addition to the Cambridge-Isanti School District, Braham Area School District and Isanti County. We have seen many changes to these communities since we started 114 years ago, but what has remained strong is the sense of community and pride in these communities. We hope the stories we print each week reflect that strength and give our readers a stronger insight into the people of these communities. Don’t forget that many of the same stories found in the printed version of the Isanti County News are also on our website, www.isanticountynews.com for your convenience. Many readers look at both our print edition and website. With over 12,600 copies delivered to homes every Wednesday, plus many more copies available at locations throughout the area, the Isanti County News reaches most of the people in Isanti County. Our news department does a great job reporting on the stories that not only keep you informed as to what is happening with the councils and boards, but also on the events in the area and features on interesting people. You probably recognize some of these reporters. Rachel Kytonen has been the Editor of the Isanti County News for the past three years, and has been with the newspaper for 11 years. Elizabeth Sias has been our Community Reporter for the past two years. Finally, Greg Hunt, our Sports Editor, has been seen on the athletic fields and in the gymnasiums of our school districts for the past 22 years. If you walk in our office at 234 S. Main Street in Cambridge, you are always greeted with a smile and a friendly face. Our front office associates take your Isanti County News and Scotsman classified ads, schedule all kinds of ads, and are there to answer many questions. Tonya Orbeck has been the Office Manager for many years and also spends a lot of time putting together Kid’s Day at the Isanti County Fair and heading up Downtown Customer Appreciation Day in Cambridge. Also in the front office are Cathy Nelson, Erica Wilson and Shana Bouley. The sales department offers a blend of long-time veterans and some newcomers. Jerry Gloe is the Regional Sales Manager bringing a wealth of experience and leadership. Veterans Sue Beckman and Neil Anderson have been helping customers make their marketing plans become successful for many years. Both Dawn Tschumper and Helen Rosing grew up in Cambridge, and have been working hard so their customers see the benefits of using the Isanti County News and Scotsman. Our office is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. We can be reached at 763-689-1981. ECM Publishers, Inc., the parent company of the Isanti County News and the Scotsman, purchased the Sun Newspapers group in 2011. ECM Publishers, Inc. now publishes 51 weekly newspapers and shoppers throughout the state of Minnesota with a combined distribution of 700,000 homes. We have 500 associates publishing, printing, and distributing these papers, in addition to many other papers from across the state and beyond.

Isanti County Historical Society When it comes to the history of Isanti County, are you smarter than your fifth grader? Don’t take it too hard if it turns out she is better versed in the subject than you— chances will be she had a chance to attend “Old Time School,” at the West Riverside School. This experience is offered five weeks out of every year to students from the first to eighth grades and takes place at a historical country school preserved by the Isanti County Historical Society. Originally founded in 1965, the mission of the Isanti County Historical Society is to preserve and promote the history of Isanti County. After nearly four decades as an itinerant organization, the Historical Society finally settled in the Heritage Center in the northwest corner of the Isanti County Fairgrounds in 2003. However, after nine years the Heritage Center was totally destroyed by an arson fire on July 8, 2011 and the organization was forced to again relocate and regroup. It has been estimated that 80 percent of all archives and artifacts were lost, as well as the entire building and its offices, community room and kitchen. That’s all history now! After two long years of cleaning burned items, planning, designing, and rebuilding, the Isanti County Historical Society is ready to move forward with “A New Face in the Same Place.” Tentative plans are to move in by June 1, 2013 with a grand opening to celebrate this accomplishment sometime during the summer. The new facility is on the same footprint as the first, with a few tweaks to make it more functional and renter-friendly. Included in the facility

will be a resource/research center, board/meeting room, licensed kitchen and large 32x50 great room for rentals. Many of the artifacts and collections were lost in the fire, but that only means that ICHS will have to look deeper and further to find replacements for our archives. Executive Director Kathy McCully envisions a proactive organization working with individuals, organizations, and families to collect and share new stories, photos and family histories not only through the library, but on-line, and through living history programs such as Old Time School and Swedish Language and Culture Camp. In addition to the West Riverside School, ICHS collaborates with Isanti County to maintain Spencer Brook School and Historic St. John’s Lutheran Church, both of which are on the National Register of Historic Places. Beyond the historic preservation aspect, the Heritage Center is available for the community to rent for reunions, wedding receptions, meetings, seminars, and events seating up to 125-150 people, with a licensed kitchen. Donations for operating support are still being accepted to help the society reorganize and operate as they get back on their feet. Our inability to hold events or rent our facility has made the operating budget very, very thin. If you are determined to outwit your prideful progeny in the future, you can get involved with the Isanti County Historical Society and learn for yourself. Memberships start at $20, and volunteers of all skills and abilities are always welcome and needed. Hunting and Fishing in Isanti County
Outdoorsmen eat well in Isanti County Isanti County has a little mix of everything while situated not far from the metro area. There are farms, woods, willow swamps, and waterways across the acres which beckon outdoorsmen to spend hours chasing game, along with drawing in visitors to the resources.
Fishing First off, Rum River courses throughout Isanti County. The Rum has an excellent source in Lake Mille Lacs, and there are many miles of tree-lined waterways for boaters or canoers to enjoy, along with several ramp and carry-in accesses. Primary fishing targets on the Rum are walleyes, northern pike, smallmouth, panfish and the occasional muskie. Bald eagle sightings are a bonus! The lakes of Isanti County are also gorgeous resources. In the west-central side sits the county’s largest lake– Green Lake at 832 acres, managed for walleye and northern pike, with a high-quality population of largemouth bass. Neighboring Green is Spectacle Lake– 224 acres of the clearest water around and a magnet for swimmers. Spectacle is also on a walleye-stocking program. Much of the mid-size to smaller lakes in Isanti County are panfish producers with the bonus of being decent largemouth bass stops. Little Stanchfield, west of Grandy, is a 138-acre backwater of the Rum River which can get hot on crappies or northerns. Blue Lake in the southwest corner is a 309-acre lake known for intermittent nice year-classes of crappies. Sister lakes Lake Skogman and Lake Fannie on the east side also give up crappies regularly with the bonus largemouth
found in the pads. Two gems off the beaten track in the northwestern corner are 212-acre Lory Lake and 220-acre Lewis Lake – both which hold feisty bluegills and decent northern pike. Just over the border to the northeast sits West & East Rush Lake, along with Goose Lake– all quality fisheries.
Hunting The habitat mix in Isanti County, combined with dedicated volunteer hours from several outdoor groups for annual improvements, is home to a strong whitetail deer population. The three deer hunting seasons (archery, firearms & muzzle-loader) draw large numbers of hunters looking for a wall-hanger or meat in the freezer. The bear population in the county has steadily grown the past few years– another draw for early autumn. The fields and water combination keeps home large flocks of Canadian geese, and the backwaters hold squeaking wood ducks, teal and mallards. Pockets of ruffed grouse can be found, as well. Wild turkey hunting is probably experiencing the largest growth from year to year. The first turkey re-introductions in the area began in 1992. Gobblers and hens are now a common sight, and the large groves of oak trees keep them full. Public access to hunting lands has also increased nicely the past 10 years. Isanti County now holds all of these Wildlife Management Areas: Athens (192 acres), Becklin Homestead (specifically for physically challenged hunts only), Bethel (667 ac), Cranberry (317 ac), Crooked Road (381 ac), Dalbo-Krone Bog (3,152 ac), Dobe (100 ac), Margret Lake (488), Marvin W. Schubring Memorial (285 ac), Rice Creek (686 ac), Spectacle (511 ac), Spencer Brook (232 ac) and Stanchfield (40 ac). For more information about WMAs, lakes, regulations and places to buy hunting and fishing licenses, go online to www.dnr.state.mn.us.

Isanti County Fair The Isanti County Fair will be the place to be this summer when they celebrate the 136th Annual Fair with “Oktoberfest in July” at the 2013 Fair. Thanks to the ‘County Fair Arts Access and Cultural Heritage Grant Program,’ funding was received again this year to “to enhance arts access and education and to preserve and promote Minnesota’s history and cultural heritage as embodied in its county fairs.” This year’s Isanti County Fair will be celebrating our German Heritage with traditional ethnic and cultural entertainment. Some of the entertainment planned for this year’s fair will be the ‘Concord Singers’ from New Ulm, Minn., who will be performing authentic German selections. You will not want to miss this opportunity to experience their extensive repertoire of current and traditional German popular standards and “Volksweise.” The Concord Singers are known as the foremost amateur German-language male chorus in America and they have traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada and Europe entertaining audiences with their exuberant style. In addition to the Concord Singers, the Elk River Brass Band featuring their Bavarian Style of German music, will be performing Thursday evening, along with a traditional German Dinner which will be served at the Bandshell for
those who want to try an authentic taste of the Old World. There will be plenty of demonstrations, exhibits, and competitions along with returning favorites Cock-a-doodle Zoo, Historic turn-of-the-century Stillwater Trolley’s, great Bandshell entertainment and plenty of good food. Make plans to come out to the 2013 Fair. “Celebrate the Best Five Days of July” while learning about our Heritage with ‘Oktoberfest in July’ at the 136th Annual Isanti County Fair. Elmhurst Commons
Elmhurst Commons was founded 14 years ago, using the former site of Braham Middle School to construct a 36-unit housing for independent seniors age 55 and older. Having established a reputation for quality care, Elmhurst’s range of services was expanded three years ago to include housing for senior citizens who require assisted living. Assisted living services include daily lunches and dinners, wireless pendants, housekeeping, laundry, emergency assistance from on-site staff and access to registered nurse on call 24 hours a day. Smart Boards that allow the students to become interactive with the curriculum throughout the day. This handson approach has been key to making the students understand the curriculum better. Supplemental programs such as Study Island and Accelerated Reading help differentiate and individualize the curriculum for students. Title One, ESL (English as a Second Language), DAPE (Direct Adaptive Physical Education), and Special Education help integrate students within the mainstream classrooms. Specialists in music, computer technology, physical education, and media enrich the students’ day and help produce creative thinkers. To provide a safe environment for students that need care before and after school the school has a program called Braham Area High School Braham Area High School provides students with many opportunities to receive a well-rounded education. Along with the core subjects students have the opportunity to explore their personal interests through electives offered in foreign language, family and consumer science, industrial technology, business, music, art and science. Classes are also offered over the ITV system for students who wish to take classes not taught at the high school. Cambridge-Isanti School District #911
Cambridge-Isanti School District #911 is a comprehensive Pre-K through Grade 12 district serving the cities of Isanti and Cambridge and most of Isanti County, Minnesota. High quality education and academic success are long standing traditions in the Cambridge-Isanti School District and communities. They believe for all students to be successful in reaching their potential, a strong relationship needs to be developed between home and school. They encourage all members of the community to take an active role in their schools. Cambridge Primary School serves the northern portion of the Cambridge-Isanti School District. This attendance area is approximately 140 square miles and includes the cities of Cambridge, Dalbo, and Grandy. It houses Pre-K through grade 2 with a population of just over 630 students. CPS has 48 licensed and 28 support staff. The entire staff works hard to teach to the Minnesota Academic Standards and to develop positive relationships with all. We teach all our students beginning basic skills of Reading, Mathematics, and Language Arts to help them all become 21st century learners. Isanti Primary School and the Early Childhood Program currently serves approximately 500 Pre K - 2nd grade students who live in the area surrounding the city of Isanti. These programs offer early childhood family education, early childhood preschool and early childhood special needs programs, as well as a traditional kindergarten every other day program and a fee-based All Day, Every Day Kindergarten program. Isanti Primary School also includes first and second grade programs. IPS offers specialist classes for K - 2 in the areas of music, media, writing lab, PE and skills lab. We currently have 20 sections of K - 2 students. IPS houses two computer labs and has a SMART board and Apple TV technology in every classroom. Each teacher has an iPad for instructional use in the classroom and the Media Center has 30 iPads used with all students. Isanti Intermediate School and School For All Seasons is located in Isanti, Minnesota and is in a facility built in 2006 that houses its traditional calendar intermediate grades 3-5 and its year-round program in grades K-5. The building has 40 classrooms, five conference rooms, a gymnasium, three computer labs, a technology room, a large media center, a music room, a cafeteria that seats 250-300 people, two baseball fields, and a large playground. The school has an enrollment of 450 students in the Isanti Intermediate School and an enrollment of 215 students in the School For All Seasons. Each grade level and program has their own wing or house. The school is also home to the bus transfer station for the Isanti portion of the school district. The School For All Sea-
sons is an option for Cambridge-Isanti students in grades K-5 that follows a year-round schedule that begins in August and ends in June. Cambridge Intermediate School currently serves approximately 625 students in grades 3 – 5 who live in the northern half of the Cambridge-Isanti School District. It has 24 regular education classrooms, two gyms, three computer labs, a music room and a media center. CIS students and staff celebrate their academic and character education successes each trimester with a Blue Jacket Pride Recognition ceremony. Cambridge Middle School, grades 6-8, is committed to quality education for all students. Students at CMS are encouraged to expand their talents in academics, athletics, and the arts. Our Renaissance program recognizes students for academic excellence and improvement. Students are also recognized for outstanding evidence of the five character traits-Honesty, Self-Discipline, Respect, Compassion and Responsibility. Our vision is to create and academic culture at CMS where students can learn the skills they will need to succeed in this 21st century. All of our staff works to create a place where students get an education that is both academically rigorous and “real-world” relevant. Isanti Middle School (IMS) currently serves approximately 450 students in grades 6-8 living in the city of Isanti and surrounding area. IMS is one of two schools residing within one building. IMS shares the building with the Minnesota Center (MNC) and follows the traditional school calendar. The Minnesota Center (MNC) is Cambridge-Isanti’s optional year-round middle school program located at the Isanti Middle School site. MNC’s follows a year-round calendar and has been an option for district parents since its founding in 1995. Originally, the school calendar followed a 45-15 configuration where students learned for 45 days (nine weeks of school) and were on intersession break for 15 days (three weeks of vacation). That calendar has been modified over the years and currently students have 6-8 weeks of school followed by 1-2 week intersessions. The school year starts at the beginning of August and runs through the middle of June.

Cambridge Christian School Now is the most pivotal time in history to recognize the importance of passing Godly values to the next generation. Parents won’t be able to pass on their faith or their values, or even protect their kids from the culture, unless they make the relational connections, loving bonds and intimate attachments that the children so desperately want and need. Cambridge Christian School strives to make those connections and bonds on a daily basis whether it’s in the classroom, in the hallway, or on the field of play. They take the education of each child seriously and endeavor to partner with parents in preparing each student to fulfill the wondrous future God has in store for them. Together they can mentor tomorrow’s Christian leaders today. Cambridge Christian School was founded in 1978 to partner with parents in educating their children within a Christian worldview. This has been the consistent mission of CCS throughout the school’s history. Their mission statement states that they exist “to partner with parents in providing a spiritual foundation through academic and extracurricular programs where children are challenged to become Christ-honoring servants.” At Cambridge Christian School they believe the most important thing one generation can do is equip the next generation to glorify God. To reach that end, they focus on four areas in equipping the next generation. They disciple students in learning how to follow Christ. They teach students to know and understand things they need to know and understand. They mentor students by serving as guiding friends and advisors. They coach students to successfully apply what they know. In short, what makes Cambridge Christian School different is that they make education personal. They build meaningful relationships, involve parents, have a purposeful and relevant curriculum, promote learning outside of the traditional classroom, and cultivate a Christ-like citizenship. They consistently strive for excellence in all aspects of your child’s education. As faculty and staff they truly believe that each child is a unique, one-of-a-kind, unrepeatable, never-to-be-seen-again, created-in-the-imageof-God, MIRACLE. Cambridge Christian School serves the whole family from Pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. The Early Education Center provides both certified preschool and licensed daycare throughout the day. Their kindergarten through twelfth grade program provides academic, athletic and fine arts offerings as well as promotes active community service options throughout the school year. Cambridge Christian School, including the recently completed outdoor athletic fields, is located at 2211 Old Main Street South in Cambridge and can be seen from Highway 65. Cambridge Christian School offers a wide variety of athletic programs for our students. Our goal for each student athlete is that they would be an example of Jesus Christ both on and off the field of play. Character development is a primary focus of our sports program. The coach’s and athlete’s character should honor God in each sporting event. CCS’ programs have been very successful. The athletic teams routinely have finished at or near the top of league play. Several CCS athletes have gone on to play at the collegiate level. Secondary students meet in the core classes (math, English, social studies, science and Bible) four days a week while reserving the fifth day for superblocks of electives and service time. Both the students and staff have enjoyed this format and they are seeing the positive results it brings the learning experience. Cambridge Christian School has also demonstrated positive

results through its Online Academy. The CCS Online Academy was created to offer a flexible way to meet the scheduling needs of high school students. The world is changing and the educational environment is changing as well. Students currently in college are finding their experience with online learning helps prepare them for higher education. Whether it is accessing materials in the libraries, managing the scheduling process, taking exams or prerequisite courses, nearly every student is expected to handle the online environment these days. One of the goals of CCS is to provide our students more experiences in an online environment. Each year CCS accepts new students from several different educational systems. Because of that, a particular student may find that they need a class outside of the normal sequence. Online education will allow us to meet that need. Certain students may need additional course choices or may need to be able to recover a lost credit. The CCS Online Academy also provides students the opportunity to participate in both Advanced Placement and Dual Credit college courses. Another benefit of Cambridge Christian School is having all their K-12 programs on one site. Older students enjoy working with the younger students in both reading groups and tutoring sessions. The elementary students benefit from the experience and knowledge of the secondary students. The older students also discover that their actions and interactions are observed and mimicked by the younger students. Few decisions will have as lasting an impact on the life of a child as the choice of his or her school. Cambridge Christian School believes that God has a wonderful plan for each child. It is the school’s goal to help students find their strengths and develop the intellectual, emotional, social, physical and spiritual health to accomplish whatever road is set before them. If what you have learned about Cambridge Christian School fits with your family’s beliefs and needs, you are invited to make application for enrollment. Prospective parent tours are always available, and student visits can be arranged throughout the academic year. For detailed information on admissions, including grade openings and a current tuition and fee schedule, please contact the Admissions Office. Financial aid for grades K-12 is available for accepted students with proven financial need. For further information or to arrange a school visit, please contact: Cambridge Christian School 2211 Old Main Street South Cambridge, Minnesota 55008 (763) 689-3806 FAX (763) 689-3807 jdoble@cambridgechristianschool.org Cambridge Christian School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, national or ethnic origin in its educational programs, admissions policies or financial aid.

East Central Minnesota Chorale The East Central Minnesota Chorale is a civic choir representing more than 10 East Central Minnesota communities. Their mission: To bring fine choral music, performed at a high artistic level, to East Central Minnesota. Join the Chorale The Chorale welcomes all capable singers who love the challenge of fine quality choral music. Adults of all ages, young and older, sing in the chorale. If you are interested in becoming a chorale member please contact the chorale director, Mark Potvin at ecmcdirector@ gmail.com. Rehearsals are held September through early May on Mondays, 6:30-8:30 p.m., at Cambridge Lutheran Church, 621 Old North Main Street in Cambridge. History David Clarke founded the East Central Minnesota Chorale in 1980. Clarke was choral director at Cambridge High School, and after leaving Cambridge, became director of music at Normandale Lutheran Church in Edina. Dr. Dennis Port, now the conductor of the Bethel University Choir, also served as director for a few years. Mark Potvin, Choral Director at Princeton High School, took over as music director of the Chorale in September 2007. Throughout the years the Chorale performed in several cities in East Central Minnesota, and the Twin Cities. They also took regional tours, performing in Duluth, Grand Forks, Eau Claire, La Crosse, Rochester, Marshall, and other Minnesota towns. The Chorale performed at the state convention of the American Choral Directors Association, as well as the ACDA regional convention in Lincoln, Nebraska. Over 150 East Central Minnesota residents have been members of the Chorale. Performances The chorale repertoire includes everything from classical Re-

naissance to Contemporary styles, including classic choral selections, oratorios, folk songs and spirituals, as well as Broadway and pops arrangements. The Chorale has invited local high school choirs to join them in Major Works/Scholarship concerts and has performed with orchestra and professional soloists. The concerts provide a unique experience for area high school singers. The Chorale annually awards two vocal music scholarships at this concert. The concert season typically includes 3-4 Christmas Concerts, the February Scholarship Concert, and 2 Spring Concerts. Occasionally there are additional special event concerts scheduled as well. Unum Vox, high school honor choir In 2009 the East Central MN Chorale launched a project for regional high school students. “Unum Vox” (one voice) is an elite honor choir designed to enrich the typical high school choir experience by allowing students from various schools to excel in a common pursuit of quality singing at the highest possible level. Auditions are open to 10-12 grade choral students. Unum Vox rehearses from 6-8 pm on Sunday evenings at the Cambridge Lutheran Church in Cambridge. They usually perform in concert with the East Central MN Chorale. Mark Potvin also is the director of this choir.
The Chorale is very thankful and proud to have received funding from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund through a grant from the East Central Regional Arts Council.
