he Twin Cities Metropolitan Area is one of the fastest growing regions in the Midwestern United States. With low unemployment, a high-quality workforce, robust transportation, excellent business culture, and high quality of life, Minneapolis-St. Paul is an incredible place to live and work. Residents flock to the beaches in the summer, attend outdoor concerts, and fish off bridges. When fall arrives, with its dependable “Indian Summer,” the lakes will become mirrors of oranges, yellows, and reds. People will visit apple orchards for hayrides, cider tasting, and homemade apple bakery goods. Winter will paint frost-laden landscapes for skiers and create hundreds of instant pond hockey rinks for young NHL hopefuls. In the springtime, loons and geese will continue to return to a vast array of tulips and irises. Twin Citians cheer for their hometown heroes and attend the Great Minnesota Get-Together, the State Fair, in droves. We love our cabins up north as much as our

theatre and culture downtown. From our top ranked education system to our world class transportation infrastructure, the Twin Cities metro area continues to position itself as a major player for those looking for a great place to live and raise a family.

Business Minnesota is home to 19 Fortune 500 companies (10th most in the nation). Of these, 18 are located in the Twin Cities, placing it in the top spot for Fortune 500 companies per capita. The metro is also home to thriving private companies, including Carlson Companies, M.A. Mortenson, Anderson Windows, Holiday Cos., and Cargill – the nation’s largest. Minneapolis-St. Paul has the nation’s 10th highest level of merchandise exports among the 50 largest metropolitan regions. 2011

exports totaled $26.2 billion, with the bulk going to Canada, China and Mexico

Consumer Spending Per capita personal income—$48,657 as of 2011—is the highest in the Midwest and among the highest for large` metropolitan areas in the country. Minneapolis-St. Paul has an extremely affordable housing environment, with the 11th lowest median sale price for existing homes among the 30 largest metropolitan areas— $147,300 in 2012. According to the National Association of Home Builders’ Housing Opportunity Index, 85.9 percent of homes in the Twin Cities are affordable for persons at the median Twin Cities area income. Minnesota’s tax-free apparel shopping attracts shoppers from around the world to the metro’s retail districts and malls, including the country’s largest mall, the Mall of America.

Education The Twin Cities had the highest percentage of population with a high-school degree (93 percent in 2011, among metropolitan areas). Minneapolis-St. Paul has the fifth highest percentage of population with a bachelor’s degree or higher (37.9 percent) among the 30 largest U.S. metropolitan areas. According to the Minnesota Office of Higher Education, the Twin Cities ranked fourth with 50 percent of the population having attained some sort of degree (Minnesota ranked 5th among all states with a 45.8 percent attainment rate).

Employment Minneapolis-St. Paul has the highest labor force participation rate (72.6 percent) among the top 30 largest U.S. metropolitan areas. The Twin Cities is projected to gain nearly 144,100 jobs—an 8.5 percent increase by 2019.

The Twin Cities is ranked first in the nation and third in the world for human capital, according to the most recent World Knowledge Competitiveness Index. Rankings in this index reflect the level of knowledge and skills within the workforce as well as the extent to which human capital is equally distributed within the population.

Innovation The Twin Cities ranks eighth in the country for new utility patent awards Some of the world’s best-known products were developed here, including Post-It Notes and Scotch Tape (3M), Wheaties and Cheerios cereals (General Mills), and the Pacemaker (Medtronic). The University of Minnesota – among the top five public research universities in the country – has created 38 startups since 2006, thanks to an innovative new effort through its Office for Technology Commercialization. welcometwincities.com

Lifestyle Recreational Activities: More than 150 golf courses, 63,160 acres of recreation areas, 192,000 acres of lakes and rivers, nearly 150 professional sporting events annually, more than 530 movie theater screens, and a large number of live music venues. Minneapolis has more theater seats per capita than any U.S. city outside New York and its famous First Avenue is the sixth most popular music club in the world, based on ticket sales. Travel + Leisure named Minneapolis one of Hottest Travel Destinations of 2013, in large part for its outstanding dining scene. It is the only American city on the list with Amsterdam, Marseilles and the Phillipines being some of the other cities noted. The Mall of America has over 400 stores and more than 2.5 million square feet of shopping. Family entertainment includes: the Minnesota Zoological Gardens, Como Zoo and Conservatory, Children’s Museum, and Science Museum of Minnesota.

The proposed Southwest and Bottineau corridors will connect with the existing lines in downtown Minneapolis. The new lines will provide service to the Southwest and Northwest sectors of the metro. The NorthStar commuter rail provides express commuter service to downtown Minneapolis from several north metro communities. The line, which currently terminates at Ramsey, is planned to eventually expand to St. Cloud.

“The Pillsbury A Mill was designed by architect Leroy Buffington who refused to listen to engineers on the construction. Twenty years later the mill caved in at the top and bowed out at the bottom, sagging into the “S” shape it retains to this day. Rumor has it that it’s scheduled to become condos.” “The Washburn Crosby Company, precursor to General Mills, got tired of paying for advertising on radio stations, so they just started their own station, WCCO, currently a major Twin Cities multi-media station.”

Minneapolis-St. Paul is the 14th busiest airport in the United States. MSP was recently ranked the #1 airport in the United States by Travel and Leisure Magazine (2012) for its excellent dining and retail options, quick check-in and quality design and cleanliness.

Betty Crocker, never a real person, was a promotional gimmick invented in 1921 by the Washburn Crosby Company (forerunner to General Mills) to share tips and recipes with homemakers.

Forbes ranks the Twin Cities as the nation’s healthiest city, thanks in part to our extensive parks system and residents’ healthy lifestyles.

On average, the Twin Cities enjoys more clear days each year than Chicago, Miami, Portland, Houston and Seattle.

Minneapolis-St. Paul has professional franchises in all major sports leagues – baseball (Twins), football (Vikings), basketball (Timberwolves and Lynx), hockey (Wild), and soccer (Minnesota United), as well as Big10 sports at the University of Minnesota.

The Twin Cities averages 32 inches of rain and 52 inches of snowfall each year.

State Posts Highest Graduation Rate in a Decade Across the board, more Minnesota students are graduating from high school

OSEVILLE – Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) Commissioner Brenda Cassellius was joined today by Office of Higher Education (OHE) Commissioner Larry Pogemiller and Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) Commissioner Katie Clark Sieben to announce that graduation rates are the highest in the last decade, with more than 79.5 percent of Minnesota high school seniors graduating in 2013, up from 77.6 percent in 2012. This increase is twice the yearly increase seen over the past three years, showing acceleration in progress for Minnesota seniors. Across the board, all student groups showed gains, with some of the largest increases being made by black students—up 6 percentage points over last year—and students learning English, whose rate increased by 7.5 percentage points over 2012. In fact, no single group of minority students made less than a 3 percentage point gain. “Minnesota has one of the most highly educated work forces in the country and today’s announcement of increased graduation rates among our high school students reinforces the longevity of our state’s greatest asset—our talent,” said DEED Commissioner Katie Clark Sieben. “Increasing graduation rates among Minnesotans of all backgrounds is essential for the future growth of our businesses and economy and will allow us to remain competitive in a global economy.”

The state has developed several initiatives with increased focus on graduation in recent years: • The Minnesota Early Indicator and Response System (MEIRS) is a tool for districts to identify and support students in grades six and nine who are at increased risk of not completing high school in four years. • The Regional Centers of Excellence provide a statewide system of support to help school leaders create and implement plans to narrow achievement gaps, increase graduation rates and improve student outcomes to ensure all students are ready for a career or college. • Minnesota’s waiver from the federal No Child Left Behind law has allowed for the graduation rates of students of color, students in special education, students living in poverty and English language learners to be an integral part of our accountability system, which also provides recognition and support to schools. • Minnesota is a participant in Grad Nation, a collaborative effort to increase the overall four-year graduation rate in Minnesota to 90 percent by 2020. A key effort is to highlight positive and alternative solutions to outof-school suspensions, which contribute to students disengaging from school. Minnesota Schools Post Strong Progress Toward Closing Achievement Gaps for Students ROSEVILLE – With all eyes focused on closing achievement gaps, new data from the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) show that districts and charter schools across the state are largely on track to meet an aggressive statewide goal of closing gaps by 50 percent by 2017. The data have been provided to all districts and charter schools in Minnesota, and offer school officials a concrete measure of how close to ontrack they are in closing the gaps between students of color and white students within the timeline. “For the first time, we have concrete goals around gaps, and are letting our school leaders know exactly how far they need to go to be fully on track to close these gaps,” said Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius. “When you look at the numbers, you begin to realize not only how far we’ve come, but that our goal of reducing these disparities is actually within our reach and very doable.” The data are part of Minnesota’s new accountability system, developed as part of its No Child Left Behind Flexibility waiver, which measures how students in every subgroup—white, black, Hispanic, American Indian, Asian, special education, low-income and English language learners—are performing academically while also setting yearly goals for increasing student achievement that will ensure all gaps for each school are closed by 50 percent by 2017. Minnesota is one of the waiver states, if not the only one, providing this kind of data to school districts.

Forty-three percent of districts have met their 2013 targets in reading for every single subgroup. In math, nearly 40 percent of districts met their 2013 targets for every subgroup. Just as encouraging, 32 percent were meeting their reading targets for all but one subgroup, while 26 percent of districts were meeting their 2013 targets in math for all but one subgroup. “To have three quarters of our districts there or nearly there in reading, and twothirds of our districts at the same place in math is remarkable,” continued Cassellius. “Clearly, we still have work to do, but the kind of accelerated growth we’re seeing in so many districts shows that with focused attention, it can be done. When I see these numbers, I feel confident that school leaders and teachers are working harder than ever to ensure every child has what they need to succeed.”

New index of health preparedness gives Minnesota strong marks National Health Security Preparedness Index gauges readiness for public health emergencies A new tool developed to measure readiness for public health crises shows that Minnesota stands out for its community planning and engagement, laboratory testing capabilities and social capital and cohesion. All these factors help bolster the state’s ability to deal with health emergencies ranging from disease outbreaks to natural disasters. The evaluation tool, called the National Health Security Preparedness Index (NHSPI), is available to the public at www.nhspi.org. It was developed by a team of experts from the fields of public health, emergency management, private sector, nonprofits, government, and academia. The NHSPI examines the health security preparedness of the nation by collectively looking at the health security preparedness of states, and is intended to be an annual measure of progress.

Jane Braun, director of emergency preparedness for the Minnesota Department of Health, said the new index shows that Minnesota, like the nation, has substantial health security preparedness capability, reflecting important gains made in recent years. “We are above average overall, but there is still work to be done,” Braun said. “Minnesota’s overall index was 7.6, which is above the national average of 7.2, and we have made significant improvements since some of the measures were taken. We expect to have even stronger marks next year.” The 2013 Index identified several strengths for Minnesota, including: • Community Planning and Engagement: This area looks at the extent to which a state has engaged entities in communities such as schools, volunteer agencies, the

health care workforce, and others in emergency planning and preparation. It also looks at community capacity to ramp up during crises. • Laboratory Testing: This area measures the state laboratory system’s ability to conduct quality testing and analysis to detect biological disease agents or assess chemical agents and to perform other tasks needed in an emergency. • Social capital and cohesion: This measure includes things such as “percentage of residents doing favors for neighbors,” “percentage of community residents volunteering” and even voter turnout rate. These measures are relevant to emergency preparedness and response because it has been shown such factors improve both the rates of recovery in communities and increase the quality of recovery after an event. Transportation The Twin Cities offers extensive options for traveling around the area. Metro Transit is rapidly expanding light rail and bus service. The Northstar Commuter Rail system provides service from downtown Minneapolis to Big Lake with connecting coach bus service between Big Lake and St. Cloud. And, traveling by personal automobile remains one of the easiest and most convenient ways to travel around the Twin Cities via the extensive highway system.

Traveling around the Twin Cities MSP International Airport Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) is surrounded by Minneapolis, St. Paul and the suburban cities of Bloomington, Eagan, Mendota Heights and Richfield. MSP has one airfield with four runways and two terminal buildings, Lindbergh Terminal-1 and Humphrey Terminal-2 with adjoining parking ramp facilities. Travelers who need to transfer from one terminal to the other use the light rail transit service.

In 2013, MSP served more than 33 million passengers and accommodated 431,328 landings and takeoffs making it 16th in North America for the number of travelers served. Light Rail and Bus Service Metro Transit is a valuable transportation resource for the Twin Cities, offering an integrated network of buses, light rail

and commuter trains as well as resources for those who carpool, vanpool, walk or bike. It is working to add a light-rail link between downtown Minneapolis and downtown St. Paul as well as developing enhanced express bus service throughout the region. Metro Transit is one of the country’s largest transit systems, providing roughly 90 percent of the 78 million bus trips taken annually in the Twin Cities. Metro Transit operates the Hiawatha lightrail line, Northstar commuter rail line and 123 bus routes — 66 are local-service routes and 51 are express routes and 6 contract service routes, using a fleet of 885 buses. All Metro Transit buses are equipped with wheelchair lifts or ramps and racks for bicycles. All trains feature storage areas for bicycles and luggage.

Central Corridor Light Rail The Central Corridor links five major centers of activity in the Twin Cities region, downtown Minneapolis, the University of Minnesota, the Midway area, the state Capitol complex and downtown St. Paul. These areas contain almost 280,000 jobs. By 2030, this number is expected to grow to 345,000 jobs. Construction of the Central Corridor was completed in 2014. The Central Corridor Light Rail system includes 11 miles of exclusive right of way between downtown St. Paul and downtown Minneapolis. It connects with the existing Hiawatha line at the Metrodome station and terminates at the Minneapolis multimodal station that also serves the new Northstar commuter rail line. The Central Corridor light rail transit line runs near the TCF Bank Golden Gopher Stadium, with a station in Stadium Village serving the facility. Trains will operate every 10 minutes during peak travel periods, with a travel time of 39 minutes between downtown St. Paul and downtown Minneapolis.

About Northstar Commuter Rail The Northstar Corridor is an 82-mile transportation corridor that runs along Highway 10 from the St. Cloud area to downtown Minneapolis. In November 2009, it became part of Metro Transit’s regional service network, added much needed transportation capacity to the region and created an easy and safe way for people to travel.

It is one of the fastest growing corridors in Minnesota and the nation. By 2025, more than 850,000 people are expected to live in the corridor.

Target Field Station Opened in the spring of 2014, the Interchange is a bustling urban park, transit station and neighborhood gathering space. The Interchange is a one-of-a-kind destination for the region. It serves as a central, multi-modal transportation hub and community gathering space in downtown Minneapolis. Located next to Target Field, connected to the North Loop neighborhood and adjacent to the historic Warehouse District, this unique destination connects communities by linking the region’s growing light and commuter rail transit network, and miles of bike and walking trails. Near the Interchange, visitors can access daily bus operations that connect the Twin Cities Metropolitan area. With its central location and as one of Minneapolis’ foremost gathering spaces, the Interchange better connects the North Loop and surrounding neighborhoods to downtown Minneapolis. Additionally, with thousands of people passing through the Interchange each day, it will open the door to redevelopment opportunities that complement the station, Target Field, Minneapolis Farmers Market and the surrounding area. The Interchange easily connects communities throughout the region through the Hiawatha LRT (the METRO Blue Line), Northstar Commuter Rail, and the Central Corridor LRT (the METRO Green Line), currently being constructed. The new Red Line Bus Rapid Transit Line opened in 2013 connectiong the light rail at Mall of America to Eagan, Apple Valley & Lakeville.

MnPASS Express Lanes If you drive alone and want a convenient and predictable travel option, consider opening a MnPASS account and start using MnPASS Express Lanes.

Small, two-axle trucks weighing less than 26,000 pounds can also open an account and use the express lanes. Transit buses, carpools with two or more people and motorcycles can use the express lanes for free. A variable electronic fee is charged to people using MnPASS Express Lanes. As the express lanes become more congested, the fee to enter the lanes increases. MnPASS rate signs will read “OPEN” when the lane is open to general traffic. The signs will show a price when fees are in effect. Fees are enforced Monday through Friday during peak travel times: I-394 from 6 to 10 a.m. and 2 to 7 p.m. and I-35W from 6 to 10 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m. Lanes are open to the public on weekends and during non-peak hours.

Winter Parking Restrictions Snow is inevitable in the metro area and when it gets bad enough the area declares a snow emergency, which puts temporary restrictions on parking to allow the plows to get through. Most Minnesotans are Protestants, including a significant Lutheran contingent, due to the state’s largely Northern European ethnic makeup. Roman Catholics (of largely German, Irish, and Slavic descent) make up the largest single Christian denomination. A 2010 survey by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life showed that 32.0% of Minnesotans were affiliated with Mainline Protestant traditions, 21.0% were Evangelical Protestants, 28.0% were Roman Catholic, 1.0% each were Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, and Black Protestant, and smaller amounts were of other faiths, with 13.0% unaffiliated. Cathedral of Saint Paul, National Shrine to the Apostle Paul

By Carolyn Will, Cathedral of Saint Paul/Cathedral Heritage Foundation nternational tourists usually have two visits on their “must-see” list: the large indoor mall in Bloomington, and the Cathedral of Saint Paul perched on the highest point in our capital city. The doors open earlier at the Cathedral! Visitors are welcome every day, opening at 7 a.m. and closing at 6:30 p.m. Sunday through Friday and 8:30 p.m. on Saturdays. You will find treasures, both human and divine; quiet and solitude away from the hustle and bustle of the city below; Roman Catholic liturgies, and world-class organ music. The Great Cathedral Pipe Organs recently underwent a major three-year restoration and enhancement which began in 2010. The two identical twin consoles stand out as

one of the most significant and rare features of this project. The sanctuary console sits behind the main altar; the second console is situated in the choir gallery. One organist will be able to sit at either organ console and control all of the instruments’ stops simultaneously, and two organists may also play together from each end of the building. This will be used to great advantage in the Cathedral due to its acoustical qualities. “The best stop in the Cathedral is the room,” said Michael Quimby, President of Quimby Pipe Organs, Inc. (QPO) “The space here is unique in that the sound can come from both ends when two organs are played, mix together beneath the dome and it envelops the listener for a wonderful acoustical experience.” During the refurbishment, all original pipes were cleaned and retuned, plus QPO added

more than 1,000 new pipes. Combined, the two organs now have 5,566 pipes making up 89 ranks. The Pontifical Trompette, 61 pipes, is the most commanding stop in the enhanced instrument. As the name implies, it is meant to be used to “announce” the arrival of the Pope or other prelate. However, the stop is also used on other special occasions including the dedicatory recital. “We are also excited to have added the 32’ Contre Bombarde in the Pedal Division,” said Lawrence Lawyer, Acting Director of Sacred Music at the Cathedral of Saint Paul. “The lowest pitch emanates from a true 32’ length handmade pipe, which has been beautifully voiced for depth and maximum stylistic flexibility. I am very pleased with the richness of sound that QPO has achieved throughout. The addition of the fourth keyboard and corresponding pipes were needed for our most solemn events. The instruments truly align with the quality of the architecture both in sound and sight,” said Lawyer. Visitors will notice that the gallery organ pipes are encased in a beautiful, walnutgilded casework. This casework had been originally envisioned by the Cathedral’s

architect, Emmanuel Masqueray, a century ago yet never started. The newly installed casework has been designed based upon Masqueray’s original blueprint by Duncan R. Stroik, renowned Professor of Architecture at the University of Notre Dame, and crafted by Agrell Architectural Carving of San Rafael, California. he Twin Cities is a cornucopia of arts and culture. There are five major art museums including the newly-remodeled Walker Art Center and the giant Minneapolis Institute of the Arts. There are seven history museums, including the Mill City Museum, built within the ruins of the original General Mills flour mill. You will find several science museums, including the Bakken Museum of Electricity in Life, founded by Earl Bakken, inventor of the cardiac pacemaker, and the Science Museum of Minnesota. In addition, there is a continuing explosion of local art and art galleries in every corner of the Twin Cities and beyond.

Professional Sports in Minnesota Minnesota Twins The Minnesota Twins play in the Central Division of Major League Baseball’s American League. Minnesota Twins fans welcomed the new Target Field in 2010, one of the most unique and spectacular parks in all of Major League Baseball. Total seating is approximately 40,000 with nearly half of all seats in the lower bowl. Target Field features a 360-degree open main concourse, giving fans an uninterrupted view of the playing field. It has been named “The Best Sports Stadium in North America” by ESPN The Magazine. Target Field has also been given the title of the “greenest ballpark in America”. The stadium was built with efficient lighting, a recycling program, and water saving features. Target Field is designed to provide fans with an outstanding venue to watch baseball and is a wonderful civic landmark for the city of Minneapolis.

In 2015 the Saints will move into the new $63 million Lowertown Ball Park. The Saints have a knack for grabbing headlines with their unique promotions. They have long had a barber near home plate, ready to serve fans who want a trim while watching a ballgame. Another goofy constant at Saints games has been the way the team delivers baseballs to the umpire between each inning. Since their first season, the Saints have used a pig to do the honors. It may not be major league baseball, but everyone has a good time.

Minnesota Lynx Women’s Basketball The Minnesota Lynx are a professional basketball team in the Western Conference of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) who play at Target Center in Minneapolis. The Lynx recent domination in the WNBA includes appearances in the finals

three consecutive years between 2011 and 2013, coming out champions in 2011 & 2013. Three Lynx players travelled to London as part of the 2012 Women’s Olympic Basketball team and helped bring home a gold medal for the U.S.

Minnesota Vikings Football As summer turns to fall in Minnesota, fans gear up for another season of Minnesota Vikings football by donning their purple shirts and caps. Currently, Vikings’ games are played at the University of Minnesota’s TCF Bank Stadium. A new stadium is under construction on the site of their former home, Mall of America Field (Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome). The $900 million stadium is scheduled to be ready for the 2016 season and will host the Super Bowl in 2018. The Vikings play in the North Division of the National Football Conference. The team has eleven players who have been named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, including notables such as Carl Eller, Alan Page, Fran Tarkenton, and Coach Bud Grant.

Minnesota Timberwolves Men’s Basketball The Minnesota Timberwolves are a National Basketball Association team based in Minneapolis and a member of the Northwest Division of the NBA’s Western Conference. The Timberwolves play their games at Target Center in downtown Minneapolis. With the return of coach Flip Saunders for the 2014-15 season, the Timberwolves hope to make a run in the playoffs with talents of; Kevin Love, Ricky Rubio and Nikola Pekovic.

Minnesota Wild Hockey The Minnesota Wild team is a member of the National Hockey League and participates in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference. They are based in Saint Paul. Founded in 2000, the Wild brought the NHL back to Minnesota, who were without an NHL franchise since 1993 when the Minnesota North Stars moved to Dallas, Texas. The Wild’s former head coach, Jacques Lemaire, was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame (in the players category) in 1985. In 2008, he became only the 11th coach in NHL history to have 500 wins.

Minnesota Swarm Lacrosse Minnesota’s National Lacrosse League Team, the Minnesota Swarm, plays home games at the Xcel Energy Center in downtown Saint Paul. The team attracts about 10,000 fans per game to the eight home games of the season, which take place on weekends from January through April. There’s a definite party vibe at Swarm games and if you’re not familiar with the sport, it combines the physical play of hockey with the high-scoring playmaking of basketball. That combined with a familyfriendly environment at games, make lacrosse a fast-growing sport in the Twin Cities.

TCF Bank Stadium TCF Bank Stadium, sometimes referred to as “The Bank” is the home for the Minnesota Golden Gophers Big Ten football team, and the temporary home for the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings’ 2014 and 2015 seasons.

Mariucci Arena Mariucci Arena, home to the men’s ice hockey team, seats approximately 10,000 fans. The arena, which holds an Olympic sized sheet of ice, is named after John Mariucci, the longtime Gopher coach who is considered the “godfather of Minnesota hockey.”

Ridder Arena, home to the women’s hockey team, opened in 2002. The arena, which has an NHL size ice sheet, seats about 3,400 people. The arena shares underground access tunnels to Mariucci.

In 2009, the TCF Bank Stadium became the home for Big Ten Football in the Twin Cities.

Williams Arena, is home to both the men’s and women’s basketball teams. The building is knick named the “The Barn”, and its student section is called “The Barnyard”.

The TCF Bank Stadium doesn’t have a bad seat in the house with excellent sightlines and visibility for everything on the field. Stairs and elevators can be found at every entrance gate and there are concessions and restrooms on the first level.

he Minnesota State Fair, or the “The Great Minnesota Get-Together”, as Minnesotans call it, is the largest state fair in the United States by average daily attendance*. It is also the 2nd largest state fair in the United States by total attendance, trailing the State Fair of Texas*. Fairgoers are treated to major concerts in the grandstand, coliseum shows, agricultural exhibits, parades, midway carnival, thrill rides, shopping and of course just about any food you could ever want…on a stick! The fairgrounds are located in Falcon Heights, nestled between Mpls & St. Paul. The fair runs for twelve days from late August into early September, ending on Labor Day.

The Minneapolis Aquatennial is a free annual event, held at various locations in the city of Minneapolis, during the third full week of July. Originating in 1940, the Minneapolis Aquatennial celebrates the city’s famous lakes, rivers, and streams. Locals know it as “The Best Days of Summer”. Festivities include sand castle building, beach volleyball, a tennis invitational, a triathlon, parades, block party, milk carton boat races and the fireworks.
