I believe that because when they come here, they usually are recovering from something or were told that they can no longer live alone. They are depressed and anxious. “They get so much better once they come here. They don’t have to worry about heating their homes, shoveling snow, mowing the grass, cooking or cleaning. Their anxiety goes away. “Loneliness is terrible, but here they get to be with people in a friendly, social setting.” One of the more popular activities that Tree of Life residents engage in is playing cards. They also enjoy trips to the store to purchase some comfort items. Seasonal activities are always a hit. Recently, the residents made ornaments for their loved ones, and a lot of baking took place during the holiday season. Valerius has still had to overcome some challenges. Aside from finding the right staff for her team, she has also needed to learn how
to maneuver the paperwork aspect of her business. “It’s been a learning curve. Everyone has been very good at helping me get started. When I call a social worker and ask them to help walk me through this, they have been very supportive.” To help her understand other aspects of her business and so that it may run more smoothly, Valerius is also working on obtaining her nursing degree. Once she has completed her degree, she will be able to offer full-time nursing to her residents. Currently, she has employed a part-time registered nurse to assist her residents. Although her business has already experienced exceptional growth, Valerius wishes to keep Tree of Life Assisted Living small and close-knit. Surprised by the diversity in age and care needs of her residents, she is excited about the learning opportunity her new business has offered her. Tree of Life was created from a woman’s desire to make a difference in the care of the disabled and aging. In her journey to create a change, the New Munich community has been blessed with a local business, and the residents have a safe place they can call home.
