Diamond Jubilee
Dayton, Ohio
SOUVENIR
Why We [elebra/{!_)
TO GIVE thanks to Almighty God. The seventy-fifth year in the history of a parish presents a suitable milestone at which to pause and to view in retrospect what has been accomplished during so many years . The Diamond Jubilee Year of Holy Trinity Congregation affords the occasion to ponder over past achievements.
At the very outset , it is apparent that great credit is due her forefathers who, with a determined will and set purpose , under great handicaps and with many sacrifices , laid the foundations of this parish. In celebrating this anniversary we are constrained to honor the memory of these pioneers who built so well.
The blessings of the Almighty have been upon the parish. This is evidenced from the fact that many of her spiritual sons and daughters , in answer to the Call of the Master , have been privileged to labor as zealous priests and devoted religious in other parts of His Vineyard. Some of them have gone to their eternal reward. May their souls rest in peace ! The others are asked to join us today in gratitude to God and to Holy Trinity Parish for the favors bestowed upon them.
To the priests and religious who , at one time or another , have so faithfully served the parish as Pastor, Assistants , and Teachers is given this opportunity of rejoicing and sharing with us the honor d erived from a labor of love .
This Diamond Jubilee is not merely parochial. Former Trinitarians , scattered over the length and breadth of our Gem City , and even far beyond its limits , are likewise invited to participate in a v eritable home-coming in order to rejoice and give thanks for the spiritual blessings they have received at Trinity ' s hands.
Lastly , this is the time for the present members of the parish , playing host to all the above , to find inspiration in the grand accomplishments of their parish and to stimulate within themselves the urge to carry on , in memory of their valiant forefathers , the work so signally blessed by the Almighty .

History of Holy Trinity Parish
+ + +
Trinity's history is quite unique. It was founded in the spirit of independence; its church was built without a supervising Pastor. The congregation in point of age is the fourth of the Catholic Faith_in the city of Dayton, yet the church structure is actually the oldest. During the seventyfive years of its existence, it was presided over by but four Pastors and the number of its recording Secretaries is limited practically to three. Its first Pastor, prior to his appointment, had not served as an Assistant; its present incumbent had not acted in the capacity of a Pastor
. In the late fifties of the last century, it became evident that, owing to the steady growth of the Catholic population, the overcrowded condition of Emmanuel Church had to be relieved. A site for a new church was selected at Xenia & Allen Streets to accommodate the faithful of the East End. This was not acceptable to the people who lived in the neighborhood of Fifth and Bainbridge Streets, who at once entertained the fond hope to have a church of their own. Pursuant to this noble ambition, they made attempts to interest the Authorities of the Archdiocese in this venture, but all their attempts to obtain official sanction were long without results. [t can be readily surmised that both the Pastor of Emmanuel and the newly established parish of St. Mary's were opposed to it. Obstacles, however, only served to intensify the determination of the future Trinitarians. It is of interest to recall the experiences of those who concerned themselves most actively in Trinity's behalf. Further details may be found in the 1935 and 1936 issues of the Parishioner.
EARLY RECORDS
The first records obtainable, and these date to the very beginning, show that, on April 15, 1859, a lot was bought from Mr. Charles Meyer on the site of the present church, for which the sum of $1,600 was paid. On April 16, two more lots were obtained from Eugene Dutoit for the sum of $3,000. Since there was not sufficient money on hand, Mr. Dutoit was offered a note. But, who was to guarantee it? No less a signature than that of the Archbishop was demanded. But he had not recognized the new parish. It was interesting to hear Mr. Clem. Ferneding tell of the attempt of his father, Henry Ferneding, and Theodore Barlage or Barlow, to persuade his Grace to sign the note. For this purpose both went to Cincinnati. They were unfortunate, however, in not finding the Archbishop at home. Hence, they tried the next in authority, the Reverend Chancellor, the brother of the Archbishop. From him they not only received a cold reception but were positively informed that they were not good Catholics ( evidently referring to the fact that Holy Trinity was being founded without sanction).

But fortune smiled upon them. As they were ready to depart in disgust they met the returning Archbishop. He recognized them at once from the fact that, whenever his Grace had come to Dayton, these gentlemen had always been at his command. Immediately he invited them up to his room and patiently heard their plea. Discussing the question of notes and mortgages, the Archbishop at first refused to sign, giving as his reason that too many other parishes were doing the same. Finally, being assured that Messrs. Henry Ferneding and Theodore Barlow would guarantee payment in case the parish would default, his Grace decided to sign the note. Such treatment accorded these two pioneers of Holy Trinity Parish by the Rev. Edward Purcell was no doubt the result of his knowledge of the attitude of Rev. John Hahne, then Pastor of Emmanuel Church, who was very much opposed to the founding of Holy Trinity Parish. This opposition can be readily understood, for, if St. Mary's and Holy Trinity both were to become independent parishes, Emmanuel was to suffer the loss of many families. Many tumultuous meetings were held. In one of these Father Hahne declared "all those who leave the mother church are going out of heaven" (a rather gracious way of expressing it). But the determination to secede had received such an impetus that apparently nothing could stop it. The St. Bonifatius Bauverein as well as the St. Laurentius Unterstiitzungsverein, both of Emmanuel, voted amid an uproar to go over to Trinity. Even the organist, Mr. August Baumstark, together with the choir resigned to cast their lot with the independents. This choir was composed of August Baumstark, organist, John Kreidler, conductor, and the following members: Lawrence Butz, Jr., Chas. Butz, Louis Helfrich, John Rohe, John B. Finke, Louise Schaefer, Mary Schaefer, Wilhelmina Schaefer, Catherine Butz, and Bertha Baumstark.
ACTIVE PREPARATIONS
Though there is no record of the first independent meeting of the promoters of the church to be organized, it is evident that Mr. Henry Ferneding had been elected President and served in that capacity until the arrival of Rev. Francis J. Goetz in the summer of 1861. Under his guiding influence collectors were appointed to solicit funds for the new venture. Among those whose names stand out prominently are: Bernhard A.Ike, or Elken, by which name he was popularly known, was its first treasurer; Frederick Hussong, its first secretary, was soon succeeded by Joseph S. Ferneding in that capacity; upon his death, in 1862, he was succeeded by his brother Mr. Clem. Ferneding until 1888; Theodore Rusche, Frank and August Unverferth, Matthias Lause, George Jeckering, and Berkmeyer, and many others, no doubt, whose names have not been recorded. The first report made by these collectors is recorded as of March 14, 1859, when the sum of $369.50 was handed over to Mr. Alke. This was followed by three contributions on March 21, consisting of $156.00, $269.75, and $92.50 respectively. From the same source $621.80 was received on April 12, and the sum of $63.45 was added on April 14. A Bauverein, presumably that mentioned above, gave to the -9-

treasurer $136 .25 in October of that year, whi le the St. Helena Frauenverein, on December 4, contributed $99.76. This society was organized April 10, 1859, and is, no doubt, the oldest yet -existing society of the parish. The St . Katharina Jungfrauenverein (Young Ladies Sodality) must have been organized about this time, for, though no records are available, it made its first donation to the parish on March 31, 1860, to the amount of $24.98. Various amounts collected are recorded during this first year, but significant are these entries: on June 5, from First Ward $13 .00; on July 3, from First and Fifth Ward $26 .00; on December 4, from first and Third Ward $12 .00; on May 6, 1860, from various Wards $646.50 . A total sum of $2,359.86 had been collected during 1859, and for the year 1860 a sum of $3,199.52 was realized.
The first expenses recorded are those in payment for lots bo u ght for the building site recorded above. These evidently had buildings on them, for we find that two houses were rented, one to Thomas Butler, the qther to Charles McGalliard, at the rate of $7 per month . The first rent from Mr. Butler to the amount of $7 is recorded on June 5, 1859, whilst $28 for four months was received from Mr. McGalliard on September 20. These buildings were •subsequently torn down so that the actual construction of the church could begin. A record of November 10, 1860, tells of $64.25 having been received from the sale of old lumber. Silence shrouds any further activity except that a fair was held for the benefit of the new church $1,342.50 was derived therefrom and paid into the church treasury on January 7, 1861, and on March 4 a final sum of $20 .50 was added. Quite a creditable showing!
Counterfeiters plied their trade in the young parish On May 8, 1860, $16.30 are charged against the books, as evidence of their activity.
LAYING OF CORNERSTONE
We are left in doubt as to when the actual breaking of ground occurred. But on Ascension Thursday, May 17, 1860, the cornerstone was laid by the Most Rev. John B. Purcell, Archbishop of Cincinnati
The following account of it is found in the Catholic Telegraph under date of May 26, 1860: "There were 315 persons confirmed on Ascension Day in Dayton. Of these 140 belonged to Emmanuel congregation and 125 to St. Joseph's. In the afternoon, the cornerstone of a new church, the Most Holy Trinity, the solid foundations whereof are already built, was solemnly blessed by the Most Reverend Archbishop. The procession numbered about 6,000 persons. It extended along several squares of the wide streeted city and presented a beautiful array with its banners and 'regimental' music. The ceremony closed with some remarks and the Pontifical blessing, on the grounds, and benediction with the most blessed Sacrament in the Church of St. Emmanuel. Reverend Messrs. Hahne, Schiff, Borgess, Kelly, Blake, Fitzgerald and Kennedy participated in the interesting proceedings . The address was delivered by Reverend C. Borgess of Cinicinnati. It gave great satisfaction and we hope that it will be published in English as well as in -11-

German. The Church will be 130 feet by 60. It is for the German Catholics. The Church of St. Mary's also for German Catholics is being plastered. It will be one of the handsomest churches in the diocese. The English Catholics are much in need of a large Church. We hope they will imitate the good example set them by their zealous neighbors."
This of course is quite an interesting account and valuable for the facts contained therein. Less satisfactory is the one recording the dedication of the church. In the issue of August 24, 1861, the Catholic Telegraph has the following: "The new church of Holy Trinity was dedicated by the Rt Reverend Bishop Juncker, whom his old parishioners were happy to see again among them. The building is said to be very beautiful."
The plans for the new church were prepared by Reverend Engelbert Stehle, Pastor of St. Joseph Church, Cincinnati, and are strikingly similar to those of St. Boniface Church, Piqua, which he also made. Mr. Bernard Lemper, a practical carpenter, was the superintendent while the actual construction work was in the hands of William H. Gill. The brick for the building were supplied by Messrs . Lehman and Munger . It is an interesting item to note that the laborers were paid mostly in groceries. Thus the building proceeded slowly and economically until it was ready for dedication in August of the following year.
FATHER GOETZ
Trinity's first Pastor was the Reverend Francis Joseph Goetz. The date of his appointment is uncertain. We bring excerpts from two different sources which leave us to draw our own conclusion.
From the Annals of the Sisters of Notre Dame we gather the following: "In 1860 the Reverend F. J. Goetz, who was appointed pastor of Holy Trinity Church, at Bainbridge and Fifth Avenues, set to work at on•-3e to have a school-house built. In August 1861, Father Goetz applied for two Sisters to teach the girls of the parish. The application was forwarded to Sister Superior Louise who, about the middle of September, sent Sister Mary Amelia and Sister Barbara for the new school, the second parochial school of Dayton. Sister Mary Amelia's health failed and she was replaced in October by Sister Mary N epomucene. The school was prosperous and in time became one of the best in the city."
Father Goetz's diary contains these items. On April 19, 1861, as Pastor of Marges, h e receives a letter from Archbishop Purcell reading as follows: "Your letter, Reverend dear Sir, has anticipated one I intended to send you. I havJ been to Dayton, was there on Tuesday or Monday The church is not yet plastered nor glazed. Will hardly be ready before Trinity, if so soon. Go in God's name and hasten back. Commend your flock to the care of Canton and Canal Dover priests. Bring a good German and French priest with you if you can. God Bless you-I fear the sea will be covered soon with privateers. Truly yours, J . B. Purcell, Archbishop." Together with this letter there is also one written in Latin by the Most Reverend Archbishop, giving Father Goetz permission to visit his native land and to return in two or three months, and which concludes in these words:
-13-

REVEREND FRANCIS JO SEPH GOETZ"May God depute an angel guardian both on the journey and at home that in peace, happiness and joy, you may soon return to us." The next item in his diary is: "August 18, 1861, Feast of St. Helena, dedication of Holy Trinity Church, by the Rt Rev . Henry D . Juncker, Bishop of Alton ."
Though these excerpts seem contradictory, they are easily reconcilable. It is likely that Father Goetz was appointed Pastor in 1860, but did not take possession until in the suml)1er of 1861. •
Upon his arrival he found that the proud boast of his parishioners to have everything in readiness for him was substantially correct. Only for a brief time did he live in a house on Fifth Street opposite the church, pending completion of the rectory. He found, therefore, the following set-up: the church built of red brick was of the same size as we have it today but the steeple was incomplete, extending only 18 feet above the roof line; the parsonage was minus its southern wing which was added later; the school for boys was situated between the church and parsonage while that for the girls was on the extreme northern end of the present property next to a stone yard, all intervening real estate between the rectory and the girls' school building remained yet to be acquired. The boys' department was in the hands of male lay teachers while the Sisters of Notre Dame took charge of the girls . The girls' school was enlarged in later years but a new school for boys was built in 1876, directly south of that of the girls, only an alley separating the two buildings. In the summer of 1869, July 2, the Brothers of Mary took charge of the boys' department . At first they lived in rent; in 1894, a house immediately north of the rectory was secured by purchase and converted into a Brothers' residence. The Sisters made their home at their community house on Franklin Street. The congregation at the very outset was a goodly-sized one which is attested -t)y the 101 baptisms that took place during the first full year of its existence. Yet the Pastor was without assistance until the year 1869, when his work was shared by his nephew, the Rev Alphonse Steimer.
The history of Holy Trinity is intimately interwoven with the character of Father Goetz who for well-nigh 40 years presided over and influenced its destiny. Born in Soufflenheim, Alsace, December 14, 1828, he came to America to prepare for his sacred calling. Having studied for a short time in Mt. St. Mary's, Baltimore, he returned to Europe to finish his studies at the famous St. Sulpice, Paris, France, and reached his goal August 15, 1855. After returning to America he served the missions of Marges, Lodi, Canal Dover, and Hessen-Huebel. Father Goetz was a unique, a positive, yet withal, a most likable character. Even to this day the older parishioners speak of him with greatest reverence. They all love to recall his hobby in regard to children and animals: how he would scatter handfuls of pennies or have a car-load of apples dumped into the midst of the children, enjoying their scrambles for them; how the peddlers' horses were eager to stop at his approach to receive a lump of sugar. Father Goetz was a saintly priest, regarded as such by all who knew him. He was esteemed by Catholics and Protestants alike, yet he was staunch and fear less in defense of the Catholic attitude in regard to principles, as - 15 -

REVEREND CHARLES HAHNEhis challenge to public debate with Protestant ministers bears evidence . Due to his untiring efforts, the Knights of St George were established in Dayton in 1871, Trinity's present St. George Commandery 104 being the first in the city The Katholischer Gesellenverein, founded in 1868, is still serving a useful purpose under the name, St . Joseph Institute .
Under his faithful guidance Holy Trinity prospered. In 1886, on the occasion of its Silver Jubilee, it could rejoice in the fact that for the first time since its founding it was out of debt. (Let us remark here that this happy condition did not last long for in the very next year, owing to new improvements, it sank back into the red which it has not as yet been able to change . ) As a proof that it was well thought of by the Authorities, Trinity Parish had the honor of an irremovable rectorship conferred upon it in 1894, a distinction highly prized in those days.
In 1888, the parish lines had extended so far to the north of the city that the establishment of a new church, Our Lady of the Rosary, was decided upon; and in 19:)5, when the families from the East were accommodated by the newly established Holy Family Church. While the main financial work of Father Goetz was to pay the debts and keep up current repairs, the major additions and improvements during his pastorate were the following: the completion of the spire in 1868 at a cost of approximately $5,850; the building of a new boys' school in 1876; an addition to the rectory in 1877 and 1878 ; the purchasing of several parcels of property as opportunity presented itself; and finally, a general renovation of the interior of the church consisting of new windows, new vestibule, new dec'orations and lighting fixtures, in 1898 and 1899.
In the late summer of 1899, feeling old age creeping upon him, he resigned the pastorate which he had so ardently loved, so that it might be placed into younger hands. Not long did he enjoy his well-deserved rest spent in the company of his nieces, by the same name, for on August 24, 1900, the Angel of Death called him rather suddenly to his eternal reward He was mourned alike by his spiritual children and by his fellow citizens, as a man of God, as a lover of mankind Indeed, his life was spent in the service of God and for his fellow-man . He died rather penni less . The expenses for his obsequies were gladly borne by the grateful parish.
FATHER HAHNE
The second Pastor of Holy Trinity (October 12, 1899) was Rev. Charles Hahne. He was a native of Dayton, born July 2, 1858, a member of Emmanuel Parish. Having completed his higher studies in Mount St. Mary's of the West and at Niagara University, he was ordained on May 30, 1883. After serving as assistant in Cincinnati, at St. Paul's for one year and at Holy Trinity for five years, he became Pastor of St. Anthony Church, Madisonville. (The Rev. Doctor Charles Kemper, who had been appointed to Holy Trinity, did not take possession of it due to the earnest entreaties of the Authorities of the Soldiers Home to retain him as chaplain.) Having taken part in a competitive examination, Father Hahne - 17 -
PASTOR
1910 - 1921
REVEREND J . HENRY SCHENGBERemerged victorious and thereby received the distinction of becoming the youngest irremovable Pastor in the Archdiocese. Father Hahne had a greatly different temperament from that of his predecessor. He delighted in external pomp and glory. Under him Trinity achieved perhaps its greatest external honor. Great improvements in the church were contemplated. His motto was "Nothing too good for the House of God."
In 1905, the church as well as the rectory appeared in a new dress in the form of cement stucco. At the same time a new heating system was installed in the church and sanitary plumbing in the rectory. Six giant 4-foot onyx candlesticks, two angels each holding a beautiful chandelier, and many large oriental vases adorned the sanctuary; massive chandeliers, heroic-sized wall groups in the body of the church, an inspiringly beautiful crib, and an electrically illumined cross on the steeple-the first of its kind in the city of Dayton, all this giving evidence of his activity. His silver jubilee in May, 1908, was a brilliant event.
His last and most enduring monument in behalf of the church is the stone and marble entrances and bronze doors in the vestibule. He did not live, however, to see this work completed. While supervising it, he contracted pneumonia which carried him off unexpectedly on November 5, 1910, in the midst of his labors at the premature age of 53.
FATHER SCHENGBER
His successor, Rev. J. Henry Schengber, was appointed on December 23, 1910. Father Schengber, a native of Germany, came to America as a young man to study for the ministry. After finishing his philosophical and theological studies at Mt. St. Mary's, he was ordained February 12, 1893.
After various charges, including a professorship at St. Gregory's Seminary, and the Pastorate of St. Aloysius, Delhi, he became Trinity's third Pastor, taking possession in the first month of 1911. Father Schengber was again of the retiring, unassuming and saintly type, which had characterized the first Pastor. His piety and zeal soon left their impression upon the congregation and under his guidance Trinity attained its greatest spiritual heights. But also great material monuments were erected by him for the good of the parish. The first of these is our modern school, housing both boys and girls though separated in the grades. This entailed an outlay of over $100,000. Being undertaken in the year of the disastrous flood which had caused such damage both to the church property and to that of a great number of his parishioners, the school project must be looked upon as little short of heroic. To make the school building possible a final parcel of real estate, not yet owned by the parish, had to be acquired The clearing of the site necessitated the building of a Brother's residence; a suitable house was erected for them on the opposite side of the street.
Having completed the building, modern in every sense of the word, he next took steps to utilize it to its fullest extent for the benefit of growing youth. Feeling the necessity of keeping the children under Catholic influence as long as possible, and of giving them a greater measure of educa-
tion than the grade school afforded, he organized a Commercial High School. This proved highly satisfactory under the excellent tutelage of Sister Aloyse of the Angels, and of the Brothers Henry, .Joseph and George. Close to 400 young men and women graduated from it during the fourteen years of its existence. This department was discontinued in 1927, being absorbed by the greater diocesan program of higher education which began to function in 1926.
In 1917, a new organ was installed costing $9,553. In the same year a new boiler house as well as the present roomy sacristy were built. On the occasion of his sacerdotal silver jubilee in 1918, a great surprise demonstration was held in his honor and a substantial purse, given him by his appreciative parishioners, was generously donated back for the re-frescoing of the church. It is to the credit of Father Schengber that the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Holy Name Society, and the Lay Apostolate for the older members of the Sodality were organized in the parish. During his active pastorate, and due principally to his continuous zealous efforts, the income of the parish was practically doubled, as the Parishioner, started by him in 1914, gives ample evidence. His last work, finished only during the week of his departure, was the er€dion of a spacious coal bin and the cementing of the school yards. This work was done by the Finke Engineering Company at a cost of $8,385.66. The debt of the parish at this time had been reduced to $40,000.
Father Schengber answered the call of the Most Reverend Archbishop to preside over the larger parish of St. Francis de Sales, Cincinnati. Shortly after his appointment he was made head of the Cincinnati Deanery. In 1929, he was honored by being elevated to the rank of Domestic Prelate. Later he was made Consultor to the Archbishop. When ordained, Father Schengber was not expected to live long, so poorly was his physical condition; but his long and saintly life has left its imprint wherever he was called upon to minister. The many vocations to the priesthood, awakened and answered during his pastorate in Trinity, bear eloquent witness of his untiring zeal and priestly example.
FATHER LEISING
Rev. Herman J. Leising is Holy Trinity's fourth Pastor. Born in Germany in 1878, he came to America at the age 18. After his graduation at Cullman, Ala., he studied at Mt. St. Mary's Seminary and was ordained June 17, 1905. For sixteen years he was assistant at St. Joseph's, Cincinnati, before becoming Pastor of Holy Trinity Church, September 8, 1921.
It soon became apparent that in spite of all prior improvements there was still room for more. Though all these may still be fresh in our memory, we record them here for the sake of a record in the future. In 1923, a new steam heating system was installed in the school where the original one, though approved by the State Building Commission, proved inadequate in severe weather conditions. The cost was approximately $5,000. In 1925, Westminster chimes were installed at a cost of $2,000; to the three original - 21-

bells in the belfry one was added ,costing $300 ; a new Howard clock ($3,100) and electric bell-ringers ($1,700) were acquired through the munificent donation ($5,000) of John T. Barlow In this same year the rectory was renovated; and, though the main work was done then, it was not until after long intervals that it was finally completed in 1934 at an approximate expenditure of $18,000. This mode of desultory procedure was also us ed in the acquiring of vestments, altar boys outfits, onyx candlesticks, and the like.
In 1924, the parish was assessed $8,872 for the site of the proposed new Kemper High School. This building, however, did not become a reality, since the Brothers of Mary and the Sisters of Notre Dame were prevailed upon to build their respective high schools. In consideration of this they were to receive $100 a pupil for tuition which money was t,9' be paid from the general parish funds. Trinity for the next several·. years was assessed and paid $10,000 annually until the burden became intolerable in the years of the depression.
In 1925, an ambitious scheme was conceived by the Holy Name Society und er the inspiration of Sylvan Connair. Its purpose was to create, by means of five annual subscriptions, a High School Fund of such magnitude that the interest therefrom would pay Trinity's part not only in the building of the proposed Kemper High School but also in providing for its future upkeep. Enthusiastically the solicitors went to work. High hopes of success were entertained, until the subsequent annual assessment of approximately $10,000 by the Authorities made the attain:men.t of this nobl e goal impossible.
In 1933, the idea of free Catholic High Schools was abandoned. By the new arrangement the annual tuition was reduced to $80, half to be borne by the pupil, half by the respective parishes . The result of this was tha t only abo ut two fifths were able to comply with these regulations, the majority of pup ils returning to the public high schools.
In 1927, the Brothers of Mary were withdrawn from Holy Trinity School, after a splendid record of 58 years. A bonus of $1,000 was given them in recogn ition of their self-sacrificing services.
The Sisters were at this time permitted to establish a convent in the parishes where they teach school. For this reason the Brothers' Residence was ,completely renovated and a spacious addition built at a total outlay of $18,500. Upon its completion, the Sisters declared that it was not only highly satisfactory but the best arranged home of its kind.
Trinity's ears have not been closed to appeals from without. Sufferers from the ravages of wars, hurricanes, famines and earthquakes wer e generously assisted; appeals from the mission fields, both foreign and domestic were g iven spontaneous response. In 1924, the sum of $500 was contributed to the Building Fund of the Sisters of Notre Dame. In 1928, a room in the Good Samaritan Hospital was furnished at a cost of $1,560 in memory of Father Goetz . In the same year, also in memory of Trinity's first Pastor, a Seminary Burse amounting to $6,000 was established.
In 1930, Father Leising made a trip around the world and upon his return celebrated his silver sacerdotal jubilee in the midst of his parishioners, twenty-five of his fellow priests also being present. During his abswce a most beautiful repository had been installed. This was completed for Holy Thursday of that year and the annual all-night vigil was then inaugurated. Minor improvements, such as accommodating the school building for social functions, providing kitchen and stage facilities which, though perhaps insignificant in themselves, had a decided influence on the social activities of the parish as also had the annual outdoor reunion, inaugurated in 1922.
In 1935, active preparations were made for the Diamond Jubilee of the parish. In October of that year changes were made in the church proper consisting of enlarging the sanctuary. This was made possible by removing two rows of pews from the body of the church, the cost being $3,500. The heroic-sized wall groups and the mammoth chandeliers were removed. New lighting fixtures at a cost of $2,500, and a ventilating system consisting of two electric exhaust fans, $650, were installed. New windows furnished by the Edward H. Hiemer & Company of Paterson, New Jersey, at a price of $600 each, were donated as per inscriptions. To complete the inner renovation, the church was decorated by The Manor Decorators, Inc., Dayton, Ohio, at the cost of $5,500. Upon its completion, on the occasion of the closing of Forty Hours Devotion, on Sunday, April 5, 1936, the church in its new appearance, together with new vestments ($2,565) presented a picture that was enthusiastically acclaimed by a vast and an admiring throng.
Thus ends the brief account of the History of Holy Trinity Parish. It is replete with heroic efforts, with loving devotion, with splendid cooperation of pastors and people. Trinity may justly be proud of her past as she is hopeful of the future. She is comparable to a stately lady growing old with the passing years. Yet, there is nobility in her bearing and dignity in her demeanor. Extremely becoming to her gray hair is the diadem of diamonds now being placed upon her deserving brow.
HOLY TRINITY'S ASSIST ANT PAS TORS
Little, if any, has thus far been said in regard to the priests who assisted the various pastors during this time. Yct they had a considerable influence upon the well-being of the parish.
Of the early curates but little is known except the dates of their incumbency. Mention has been made of the Rev. Alphonse Steimer, a nephew of Father Goetz, and his first assistant in 1869. The Reverend Pastor did not long enjoy his help since Father Steimer died in the summer of 187J. He was succeeded by Father Kress, who remained until 1874. Then came Father John Frohmiller until 1888, in which year he was commissioned to establish Holy Rosary congregation. He was highly esteemed by both Pastor and parishioners and apparently took a great deal of work from the shoulders of Father Goetz. The four succeeding assistants did not remain long: Father B. Luebberman from October, 1889
to September, 1890; Father J. George Franz from October 3, 1890 to December 10, 1890; Rev. Herman Ellerbrock until August 11, 1891; Father Siegesbert Zahn O.S.B. from April 2, 1892 until March 29, 1894. He was well liked but was removed even before a contemplated petition to retain him could be formulated. Father Henry Kues was the next assistant. He stayed until October 26, 1899, concurrent with the resignation of Father Goetz. He was extremely active and rather impulsive. The windows, installed in the church in 1898 and 1899, were donated upon his solicitation and he also actively assisted the committee in charge of those improvements. In the spiritual side of his work he was extremely zealous and exacting. In 1896, he volunteered to say a second Mass in order to relieve the crowded condition in the church (until then every priest was permitted to say only one Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation). This ends the list of assistants under Father Goetz.
Under Father Hahne we find Father Anthony Tabke from 1899 to April, 1900; Reverend Joseph Sieber until July \5, 1902; Rev . John H. Schwartz from July, 1903 until July 1, 1905; the Rev. Peter Schirack, C. P. P. S. helping out in the meantime; Rev. Bernard Franzer served until October 20, 1910. He was well liked by the parishioners and so great was his appeal as a preacher that when, after several years of absence from the parish, he gave a course of Lenten Sermons there was not even standing room available. He was succeeded by Rev. Joseph N. Kock who remained until 1917, serving, therefore, mostly under Father Schengber, the former pastor having died a few weeks after his arrival. He was extremely well thought of and formed a splendid combination with his beloved Pastor. In 1917, Father Francis J. Bredestege came upon the scene. He was at his best in organizing and detail work. Under him basketball teams, both for boys and girls, were organized, as was also a baseball team, representing Trinity in the Catholic League. Trinity at this time could even boast of a brass band which he had helped to organize. After serving two years under the new Pastor, Father Leising, he was transferred in June, 1923. He was succeeded by the Rev. Otto J. Herrmann, a man of exceptional talents and ability. He further developed athletics in the parish and during this time many a championship cup was won, both in the elementary as well as in the parochial basketball league . His extremely interesting writings in the Parishioner were greatly appreciated. In 1928, he was privileged to make a trip to Europe and upon his return a burse of $1,200 was presented to him in recognition of his excellent service. H.e presided over the parish in the absence of the Pastor on his trip around the world in the first half of 1930, and during this time the magnificent repository was erected. When he left in August, 1930, genuine grief was felt by all because, as an able, zealous and loyal assistant, and as a true priest, he had made favorable impressions everywhere.
He was followed by the Reverend James M. Connelly, the first of Irish extraction to officiate at Holy Trinity. He zealously performed his duties during his brief incumbency of two years.

REV. JAMES M. CONNELLY 1930 - 1932 REV. CLETUS A. KUNZ REV. ALPHONSE STE:IMER REV. PETER GEYERThe Reverend Cletus A. Kunz is the present assistant. He delights in social organization work and activities and his capacity for detail work in arranging them is amazing. On a trip to Europe, prior to coming here, he had kissed the famous Blarney Stone and the reputed result therefrom has aided him greatly in making the social functions so highly popular.
HOLY TRINITY'S PRIESTLY SONS
The following are the spiritual sons who call Trinity Parish their mother. Father Alphonse Steimer has the distinction of being the first ordained from the parish and of being also its first assistant. He died on May 21, 1870, in his 27th year. Father Peter Geyer, ordained April 16, 1870, while Pastor of Ripley, Ohio, died a tragic death in the waters of the Ohio, on June 25, 1873, at the age of 27 years Father Albert E. Drufner, ordained August 22, 1882, died as Pastor of Holy Family Church, Cincinnati, July 21, 1912. Rev. Leonard M. Redelberger, ordained May 21, 1910, died during a leave of absence in quest of his health, February 23, 1932. Reverend Vincent J. Smith, ordained April 13, 1912, is now Pastor of St. John the Baptist Church, Spearsville, Kansas. Rev. Francis C. Grusenmeyer, ordained June 14, 1912, is now chaplain at the National Military Home, Dayton, Ohio. Rev. Francis P. Kelly, ordained June 17, 1916, died as Pastor of St. Mary's Church, Springfield, Ohio, January 23, 1934. Rev. Edward Hunkeler, ordained June 14, 1919, is now Pastor of St. Cecilia Cathedral, Omaha, Nebraska. Rev. Joseph Keber, ordained May 30, 1920, died while assistant of Mother of God Church, Covington, Kentucky, May 1, 1927. Rev. George F. Kuntz, ordained May 26, 1923, is the present assistant at St. C€cilia Church, Oakley, Ohio. Rev. Carl F. Goeckeler, ordained June 14, 1924, is assistant at Holy Family Church, Cincinnati. Rev. Arthur A. Froehle, ordained June 14, 1930 is at present connected with "The Register" in Denver, Colorado . Rev. Urban J. Wimmers, ordained May 30, 1931, is the assistant at St. Mary's Church, Dayton, Ohio. Rev. Otto Buehler, ordained May 26, 1935, assists the Pastor at Holy Trinity Church, Hartington, Nebraska. And lastly, Rev. Frederick Hochwalt, ordained June 3, 1935, at present teaches at Elder High School, Cincinnati. Clarence Leibold, who is to be raised to the subdeaconate on June 6 of this year, will likely be ordained in 1937.
From this it may be seen that Trinity was privileged to contribute a goodly number of laborers to the Vineyard of the Master. Let us hope that vocations to the priesthood and to the religious life may continue.
PARISH SOCIETIES
The oldest and yet-existing society of Holy Trinity Parish is the St. Helena Frauen Verein. It was organized April 10, 1859, at a time when Trinity was endeavoring to obtain official recognition. The fact that it existed before the church was built is evidenced by its donation of $99.76 given to the church December 4, 1859. This society is still flourishing in the Parish, under the changed name of the St. Helen Altar Society.
The St. Catherine Young Ladies Society also dates back to the be- 29-

ginning of the Parish. On March 31, 1860, a donation of $24.98 to the church is publicly recorded. St. Catherine's statue on the High Altar is evidence of its later activities. This society was absorbed in the allembracing title of the Young Ladies Sodality, still extant and active.
The St. Ludwig Jlinglingsverein united the young men of the Parish. We are unable to find the date of its organization. But its activities, spasmodic though they were, are seen in the various successful festivals and fairs it sponsored in the seventies and eighties. Later the Holy Name Society absorbed this society and enrolled the men in a Senior branch.
In the earli2r years of the Parish, we frequently meet the name of St. Lawrence Mutual Aid Society which, leaving Emmanuel, found a new home in Holy Trinity at its very outset. A Bonifatius Schul Verein, whose noble object was the suport of the school, is found making contributions, mostly small, at various intervals during the pastorate of Father Goetz.
In the autumn of 1889, the ladies of Emmanuel, St. Joseph, Holy Trinity, Holy Rosary, and Sacred Heart Parishes organized the Catholic Ladies Aid Society. Its purpose was to interest itself in behalf of the poor. Two members of each parish served as Directors, who in conjunction with the officers formed the Executive Board. Meetings were held at St. Joseph Institute. After ten years of useful activity it was disbanded and each parish left to its own resources to take care of its poor. This work in behalf of the poor was taken up by the St. Vincent de Paul Society, established by Father Schengber in 1912, and is still carrying on in a noble and self-sacrificing manner.
AFFILIATED SOCIETIES
The oldest of these, and the most spectacular, is that of the Knights of St. John, St. George Commandery No. 104. It was the proud accomplishment of Father Goetz to have them established in Trinity, and in Dayton, in 1871. This Society originally called Knights of St. George became nationalized in 1884 under its present name. In their martial bearing and natty uniform they gave great prestige to the Catholic population as well as color to church celebrations, as they are still doing at the present time.
The C. K. of 0. (The Catholic Knights of Ohio) St. Boniface Branch 69 and the C. 0. 0. F. (Catholic Order of Foresters) St. Michael Court 549 are Fraternal Societies having Trinity as their official domicile.
Of the women's societies affiliated with the parish we have the following: Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of St. John No. 79; the Catholic Ladies of St. Frances; Ladies' Catholic Benevolent Association, Branch 491; and Catholic Ladies of Columbia, St Julia Council No. 63. This latter boasts of the largest memberhsip of all the councils in the city of Dayton. A Diamond Jubilee window, donated by it, is gratefully acknowledged.
A society absolutely spiritual in scope is the Sacred Heart League, which embraces the major portion of the parishioners, stimulating devotion to the Sacred Heart and frequent Holy Communion .
The Guardian Angel Society for the purpose of encouraging devotion to their invisible Guardian is promoted amongst the children.

REV. EDWARD HUNKELER REV. CARL F. GOECKEI.ER REV. GEORGE F. KUNTZHOLY TRINITY CHOIR
What influence Trinity's various choirs have had in elevating the minds of the worshippers to God; what inspirations they have caused to be wafted on high is hard to conjecture. But certain it is that Trinity has had the good fortune of enjoying good choirs . According to some the greatest renown of the mixed choir was attained immediately before the "Motu Proprio" of Pius X, which barred women from public participation. Trinity's choir at that time, we are told, had a city-wide reputation. Be that as it may, we of the present day feel that the afore-mentioned dictum of the Holy Father had a salutary, chastening influence upon Church music; the more or less operatic gave place to the decorous and inspiring. We venture the opinion that our present choir composed of men and boys is a vast improvement over all preceding ones We gratefully recall here the choir-leaders and organists of the past. Mr. August Baumstark leads the list of organists in Trinity's church. He was succeeded by Nicholas Metz in 1862, who also taught in the school. Upon his resignation on a•ccount of old age in 1884, Mrs . Lawren,ce Butz, nee Louise Schaefer, a choir member from the very beginning, took up the charge until Nov . 1, 1900, when the energetic Pastor placed the burden upon younger shoulders in the person of Oscar Deis. He was succeeded in 1904 by William Metzner, commonly referred to as "the wizard of the organ ." Upon his death in the summer of 1929, he was succeeded January 1, 1930, by the present organist and choir-director, Professor Urban Deger, who is recognized as the leading Catholic organist in the city of Dayton

ITEMS FROM THE RECORDS
The first baby baptized in Holy Trinity Church, even before its dedication, was John Henry Dickmann, son of Bernard Dickmann and Anna M. Wolfert, on the 11th day of August. On the very day of the dedication , August 18, 1861, we find the following entry: Philomena, daughter of Bernard Folke and Anna Mary Fideldei. Both of these babies were born on August 10. Total Baptisms up to January 1, 1936, is 8,286.
The first marriage celebrated in t he new edifice was on November 26, 1861, when Lawrence Butz led Miss Louisa Schaefer to the altar, Louis Helfrich and Catherine Butz being the witnesses. This couple has been followed into holy wedlock by 2,180 couples up to January 1. 1936.
The grim reaper has not spared the members of Trinity. The first victim was Theresa Weigert, alias Gehr, being 70 years and on e month of age. Up to January 1, 1936, 3,617 have answe re d the final call.
How many millions of times the hands of the priests have been ra ised in sacramental absolution and in the distribution of Hol y Communion, it is impossible even to conjecture.
The average for Baptisms is 109; for deaths 48 8; for marriages 29 . The greatest number of Baptisms, 161, was in 1888; the lowest numb er, 79, in 1935. The greatest number of deaths was 87 in 1918 and th e lowest number, 25 in 1914. Last year (19 35 ) the numb er was 47. Th e highest number of marriages was 54 in 1917, and the lowest , 11 in 1864. Last year the number was 32.
