• A new £3.2m Construction Technology Centre which is the first Further Educational building in the UK to achieve BREEAM excellence at both design and post construction assessment stages. • A new £3.8m ‘A rated’ engineering facility, with a ‘live’ renewable technology demonstration area • Biomass boiler that supplies 19% of the college floor area for heating • Rainwater harvesting • Building management systems • Solar thermal installation for hot water • Dry urinals, low flush toilets, spray taps installed into toilets • Day light and movement sensor controlled light fittings
• Environmental improvements built into maintenance plans • College Travel Plan • Staff to work mini bus scheme. 3 self drive mini bus for staff on a set route from home to college, which is part subsidised by the college, and the current feasibility of 2 other routes. • £500 interest free loan to staff to purchase cycle equipment • Staff changing rooms and shower facilities • Secure and covered cycle storage facilities which are monitored by CCTV • Introduction of recycling facilities that has resulted in recycling from 0% to 42% over the last 4 year period. • Green Dragon Level 3 status – with a commitment to obtain Level 5 by 2011
• Change in cleaning operation from early morning to evening combined with evening classes running on 3 out of 5 evenings resulting in a first year annual savings of circa £12k and C02 savings of circa 70,000 kg • Purchase of 2 low emissions cars for the College which reduce emissions including CO2 down to 99 g/km and provides a fuel economy of 74.3 mpg on the combined cycle and they are also exempt from Road Tax (VED) • 95% of printing is now doubled sided which has resulted in paper consumption reducing by 48% over a 3 year period. • Staff print accounting and awareness raising resulting in 350,000 less prints over the last year. • All computers purchased have 80% efficient power packs • Computer software automatically shuts down computers if they have not been used for 15 minutes
What environmental benefits have been achieved? • Reduction of electricity consumption by 20% over 5 years • Reduction of gas consumption by 54% over 5 years • The above two factors have resulted in year on year C02 savings of 2,156,947 kg • The College’s energy consumption is 159 kwh / per m2 compared to a UK FE lower quartile figure of 172 kwh / per m2 or UK FE median of 208 kwh / per m2 • The savings in usage have resulted in annual financial saving of circa £75k based on the original consumption levels in 02/03 • Reduction of water consumption by 43% over 5 years • Improved awareness of the wider organisational environmental issues and ownership
