PRODUCT DESIGNER INTERACTION DESIGNER USER-CENTERED DESIGNER
A QUICK PRESENTATION EDOARDO COSTA born 16.03.1986 Italian now based in Rotterdam 2009 Bachelor Product Design at Politecnico di Milano 2011 Master Design for Interaction at TU Delft - 2011
this document is a quick presentation of my student and professional profile on December 2011 I completed my Master Thesis about new educative experiences for the introduction of Smart Grid and Smart Meters in private households now I’m looking around for future opportunities Design is an endless field, and until now I have been tried to discover as many aspects as I could now it’s time to give a shape to this knowledge and land to new shores I still miss
DESIGN THROUGH RESEARCH My Bachelor game me strong basis of product design, graphic, prototyping and communication. My Master gave the tools to develop project over a strong design method: user centered design, observation, context mapping, “quick & dirty” approach, rapid prototyping, user tests. According to me, design practice is the ability to employ these tools, technical skills and personal “touch” to create innovative solutions to solve problems. Every design project poses a question, states a problem. Design practice should explore and create multiple solutions, and define the most promising one, according to clients demands, users’ needs and project context.
Hill Climbing process My personal interpretation of innovation inspired by D. Norman “The innovation process can be described as “Hill Climbing”: you try to keep on climbing to reach a point (a solution for a project), but you use a not determined path of holder to go on, without knowing which and where is the peak you are trying to reach. The movement inside this path are determined by Human Centered Design, Meaning switch and Technology discovery and application.” This is my definition of design: a path that needs methodology (design research), skills and tool (technology), personality (meaning creation)
PROCESS
for each project, an interaction designer must be able to deal with CLIENTS, TARGET USERS, ENVIRONMENT and TECHNOLOGY client’s blurry demands must be translated into clear project target and achievements. tangible solutions should emerge from a deep comprehension of users’ needs and environmental issues, by managing the most suitable technologies and tools, according to costs, requirements and project boundaries

TOOLS
the real strength of an interaction designer is been able to employ the right tool for each kind of project even if a design process is usually structured into three main parts, initial analysis, concept development and final implementation, the development strategy through these steps must be adapted and structured according to specific situation, client approach, team organization a combination of different tools is always fundamental to reach the most appropriate design solution
