ACTIVATE: WRITE DOWN THESE DEFINITIONS… Water scarcity – there is not enough water in the area for all the people that need to drink it Physical scarcity – there is not enough fresh clean water, the water may be available but it is not safe to drink Economic scarcity – there is fresh clean water available but the people cannot afford to buy it


Describe the global pattern of water scarcity. Use an atlas to help you name at least 3 countries in each category.


DEMONSTRATE: Figure 1 on p.228 shows the percentage water use in the UK and in Africa. What are the differences in how we use water? Why might this be?


Read the information on p.228 about the water supply in the Nile Basin. Answer the following questions in full sentences‌ 1.What is the difference between the location of Egypt and its neighbours Ethiopia and Sudan, particularly their position in the Nile Basin? 2.What is the difference in wealth / development of these three African countries? 3.What is the difference in their water usage? 4.What are two of the reasons why Nile Basin countries need to cooperate? 5.Why is this cooperation not easy to achieve?
