What is the Antarctic treaty? • Without an international agreement like the Antarctic Treaty there would be a free-for-all in Antarctica – anybody could do or take what they want. • The UK was the first of twelve countries to sign the Antarctic Treaty in 1959.
• An agreement made between 47 countries in 1961 which agreed to protect the environment of Antarctica. • This was by agreeing to: – – – – –
1. Ban any military action within the area. 2. No dumping waste. 3. No hunting seals. 4. Controls on the amount of fishing allowed. 5. Can ONLY be used for scientific research.
• Demonstrate: Fill in the missing words to explain
Demonstrate: Design your own Antarctic treaty Your treaty should have or explain the following: • A flag – (remember it needs to show up in the snow) • 5 rules about what is and isn’t allowed • Why is the treaty important – what is it protecting? • How long is the treaty going to last?
Reflect: Peer assessment Swap your treaty with the person next to you and give it colour, comment and target
