Message from the President

Welcome to the 245th ECS Meeting, taking place in San Francisco, where you will find picturesque cable cars, and of course, the Golden Gate Bridge, a symbol that perfectly represents the 245th ECS Meeting. We serve as a bridge from you to electrochemists and solid state scientists and engineers from around the world, all meeting in one place to connect and share ideas. With a wide range of technical sessions, social events, and hands-on courses, our meetings offer a wealth of opportunities. Whether it is your first or fifteenth time attending an ECS meeting, we welcome you; there is so much to enjoy and do.

If you are wondering, “Where do I begin,” the online program is an excellent resource. The schedule of technical presentations is highlighted with over 3,000 abstracts summarized on pages 41-55. Floorplans and maps on pages 17-21 guide you through the meeting. Event staff wearing blue polo shirts with the ECS logo are on hand to answer your questions and happy to help. You can also stop by Customer Service at Registration for assistance.

Here are some main events not to miss! Feel free to include them as you build your personal schedule. And remember, this is just the “tip of the iceberg.” Be sure to visit the online program for a complete rundown.

An Integrated Approach to Chemical Mechanical Planarization Technology Advances

Sunday, 0900-1630h

Nob Hill B

Instructors: G. Basim Bahar and Jason Keleher

This course covers the fundamentals of the chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) process to be utilized for process design, integration methodology, yield improvement, and troubleshooting. The course content provides a complete overview of CMP technologies, starting with the history, extending into the fundamental concepts for process design and development sequence, and concluding with metrology and future trends. The course is aimed at engineers or students with introductory chemistry, physics, and mathematics backgrounds, and to serve as a reference and assist with troubleshooting while providing critical learning of the subjects for further selfstudy.

Basic Impedance Spectroscopy

Sunday, 0900-1630h

Nob Hill A

Instructor: Mark Orazem

This course is intended for chemists, physicists, materials scientists, and engineers with an interest in applying

electrochemical impedance techniques to study a broad variety of electrochemical processes. Attendees develop a basic understanding of the technique, sources of errors in impedance measurements, the manner in which experiments can be optimized to reduce these errors, and use of graphical methods to interpret measurements in terms of meaningful physical properties. The course is based on M. E. Orazem and B. Tribollet, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (2nd edition, John Wiley & Sons, Hoboken, New Jersey, 2017). Basic Impedance Spectroscopy covers the front matter (page xxxiii) and parts of Chapters 1, 4, 5, 7-10, 17, and 18. (The advanced course covers chapters 5, 9-14 and 17-22.)

Fundamental and

Technological

Modern

Aspects

of Electrodeposition for Material Processing

Sunday, 0900-1630h

Nob Hill D

Instructor: Sudipta Roy

This course is intended for chemists, physicists, materials scientists, and engineers interested in gaining, understanding, and applying knowledge of fundamental and modern technological aspects of electrodeposition for material processing to a broad spectrum of electrodeposition needs.

It is recommended that attendees have a graduate level background in these subjects. Key principles and concepts elaborated in the monograph Pulse Plating (Eugen G. Leuze, Verlag KG, 2012) which can help in electrodeposition are covered. By mastering key ideas and concepts, attendees will be able to solve problems related to their own electrodeposition systems. Concepts are illustrated by applications to different systems such as deposition of alloys, magnetic material, and micro and nano-scale deposition. A list of suggested references is provided.

Introduction to Lithium Ion Batteries

Sunday, 0900-1630h

Nob Hill C

Instructor: David Hall and Chock Karuppaiah

This course provides a robust introduction to battery technology, a broad field that

continues to grow rapidly. It is useful for new natural sciences or engineering graduate students and postdoctoral researchers interested in expanding their knowledge of lithium ion batteries and those developing new materials and multicell “pack”-level systems (e.g., thermal management and BMS), and performing full-cell lifetime/safety testing. A foundation of the relevant electrochemical theory, materials characterization methods, etc., is presented with latest trends and advances in the field. The basic principles of lithium ion battery operation are covered along with battery types and variations; methods and advances in battery prediction including cell lifetime and safety; modern applications of lithium ion batteries; emerging trends such as solid state and sodium-based batteries; and recycling and sustainability.

*Ticket required. Purchase in advance or at Customer Service in Registration.

Strategic Tools for a Successful Career*

Tuesday, 0900-1200h

Golden Gate Ballroom C3

Instructor: Michel Fouré

Scientists and engineers often find themselves trapped in careers that are far from fulfilling their dreams and aspirations. It is not for a lack of working hard. It is simply because they have not themselves learned or (re)discovered the keys to building a highly successful career. In this workshop filled with hands-on exercises, participants actively engage these essential principles. First, we ask what success really means for each of us. We discover that, like for our hobbies or favored dishes, the word “success” hides very different and individual realities which we need to clearly articulate. Having clarified this foundation, we discuss goals, their importance, and the way to work with them—for goals are the blueprint of success.

Golden Gate Ballroom C3

Facilitator: Alice Suroviec

ECS coordinates a group of mentors to meet with students and early career professionals in small roundtable groups. Topics covered usually focus on career-life balance, building contacts and networks, questions about career paths, and perspectives on different experiences. However, discussion topics vary and are often led by the group.

Win Funding: How to Write a Competitive Proposal*

Wednesday, 0900-1200h

Golden Gate Ballroom C3

Instructor: Michel Fouré

Whether your career is in industry, academia, or a national lab, chances are that you will be intimately involved in writing research grant proposals. In fact, your career growth may largely hinge on your ability to raise funds. While each proposal is unique, important guidelines lying at the intersection of the funding agency’s needs and your technical idea must be observed to maximize the probability of success. As this workshop is interactive, it would be particularly meaningful and useful for participants to be prepared to work with a real example such as a proposal they submitted in the past, or one they anticipate submitting.
