Welcome to En avant, a single package for Junior Cycle French. This Teacher’s Resource Book will focus on providing teachers with detailed units of learning, thus supporting planning for teachers. The unit plan templates contain learning outcomes from the MFL Specification for Junior Cycle along with details of assessment, language, grammar and culture in focus, learning intentions and end of unit task. Grammar points are presented in context and appear at relevant points throughout the unit. Suggestions are made as to which activities could be developed as group activities.

The units of learning are designed to take a journey through the life of a student, starting with introducing themselves and getting used to their school surroundings, and developing into talking about their family and area, etc. Each unit is designed around an end of unit task, which is outlined at the start. Units open with a stimulus designed to provoke students’ language awareness, followed by a reflection moment designed to create links with prior knowledge.

En avant aims to develop language skills that broadly align to the A1/A2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Language. The En avant programme actively engages students in communicative activities and tasks which integrate the five skills – listening, spoken production, spoken interaction, reading and writing. Units 1–22 of En avant have a strong cultural focus, which introduce students to facts, traditions, customs and behaviours of the French-speaking world. The En avant student textbook is accompanied by a free student e-book, a learning log (Dossier) and a bank of digital resources. These include editable PowerPoint presentations on grammar and vocabulary for classroom use and a package of unique videos. The interactive quizzes, video vlogs and accompanying worksheets help to reinforce the textbook content. Teachers can access the En avant digital resources, including the free En avant interactive e-book, which are available online at edcolearning.ie.
