Things I need to know

Structure: how a poem is built. Poems are constructed by assembling syllables, words, line and stanzas. Speaker: the voice of the poem. Rhyme: rhyming words sound the same. A rhyme scheme is the pattern of rhyme in a poem. Rhythm: the beat or pace of the poem. The rhythm can be found by looking at the stressed and unstressed syllables in the words. Subject: the topic, person or place that the poem is about. Theme: the underlying message or idea of the poem – what it’s really about. Tone: the attitude and feelings of the poet expressed through their poem. Mood: how the reader feels after reading the poem. Simile: a language technique where the poet compares two things using ‘like’ or ‘as’.

Metaphor: a language technique where the poet compares two different things and, as a result, reveals their similarities. Personification: a language technique where non-human things are given human characteristics. Alliteration: repeating the same letter or sound at the beginning of closely connected words. Assonance: repeating similar vowel sounds in a series of words or phrases. Onomatopoeia: when a word sounds like what it describes. Annotation: when a reader makes notes on a text by flagging or highlighting important details. Quotation: a phrase or line taken directly from the text. Inference: finding exact clues in the text and using your own background knowledge to come up with an idea not stated obviously in the text.
