Things I need to know

Film genre: a way of categorising films based on similarities of features. For example: horror, action, romantic comedy. Mise-en-scène: the arrangement of all the elements that appear on the screen to create the look of the film, including the costumes, the props, the set and the actors. Colour palette: the co-ordinated colour scheme used in costume, make-up, sets and lighting. Camera angle: the physical position of the camera when the shot is being taken.

Shot: everything that goes on in a specific section of a script. Film editing techniques: what happens with the camera footage once the film has finished shooting. Soundtrack: the written music and songs that accompany a film to create a mood or atmosphere on screen. Sound effects: the sounds added during the editing process. Voice-over: when someone’s voice narrates over a film.
