Things I need to know

Informal letter: A personal letter usually written between people who already know each other. Journalists: The people who report the news in newspapers.

Formal letter: Usually written to someone you don’t know personally. Cover letter: A formal letter you send to an employer along with your CV if you are trying to get a job. Email: An electronic mail, similar to a letter. Travel writing: Non-fiction writing that describes visits to different places around the globe. Newspaper: A written record of current events that is printed daily or weekly. Tabloid newspaper: Reports on celebrity gossip and human-interest stories and uses informal and sensational language. Broadsheet: Reports on more serious issues, such as politics, the economy and international conflicts. Digital newspaper: Digital online version of a print newspaper.

Masthead: The name of the newspaper. Byline: Summary line about the lead story. Biased reporting: When a journalist deliberately tries to sway the audience toward their point of view. Opinion piece: An article where a journalist gives their personal opinion on a topic or event that has taken place. Newscast: A report of the news on television, usually containing a blend of live video footage, live reports and interviews on location, and studio reports and discussion. Speech: A non-fiction text communicated orally to an audience, often using persuasive language. Advertisement: A persuasive text, trying to convince people to buy or do something. These are created in different formats – for radio, for television, in print and as digital ads on websites, apps and on social media.
