EDDIE HAMILTON
INDUSTRIAL
DESIGN Northumbria University
Hello, I’m Eddie Hamilton Currently I am in the second year of the Design for Industry course, at Northumbria University. I’m looking for a 3-6 month placement, starting around Easter 2014.
FRIENDLY Design a product which conveys a sense of ‘Friendliness’ 6 WEEKS
OBSERVATION Would you see this d i ff e r e n t l y if you knew how much power you consume? What if a redesigned energy meter / monitor could inform you, in a friendly manner, of how much power you’re using?
Concept Development
CONCEPT 1 CHANGE IN RATE
ENERGY PROVIDER
Like a heart, the monitor changes rate depending on how much power is being used. The monitor rocks, the speed represents how much power is being used.
CO NCEPT 2
CHANGE IN FORM
Like a plant, the monitor changes form depending on how much power is being used.

Circuit board Cavity for battery Weighted Base (provides balance) Motor and counter weight (creates rocking motion)
Final Concept By 2020 Smart Meters will be mandatory. This shows how the concept will work alongside the new capabilities of Smart Meters.
This device receives information (via wifi) from the Smart Meter. The information regarding current electricity consumption is translated into a rocking movement through the internals.
Any internet enabled device can receive data regarding the household’s consumption of electricity. This can be displayed online in easy to understand graphics.

CLOCK PROJECT Create a timepiece using a basic clock mechanism 4 WEEKS
this clock enables tactile interaction with the linear passage of time.
theory Using laws from physics to inspire a timepiece. Entropy states the forward linear passage of time, from order to disorder. Traditional clocks display time within a cycle. We divide this into specific quantities; 5, 15, 20 minutes. This restricts how we interact with time.
application Creating a tangible link to the theory. The linear passage of time from order to disorder is represented by a roll of string unravelling. This creates a tactile means to interact with time.
application What if the length of an object represented the time spent using it?
Step 1. Cut string, mark where it finishes
Step 2. Mark length of object used in task
Traditional clock’s persuade us to interact with time in simple quantities (e.g.15, 30, 45 mins).
Step 3. Begin task
Remove conventional measurement.
Step 4. Once string has travelled past bottom mark, finish task
Create bespoke measurement of time
Form Development
The theory for this clock is unusual. Therefore the form should not distract from the unfamiliar function.
Joseph Joseph Knife Project 2 DAYS
BRIEF:. Design a Chef’s knife to fit the ‘100 Collection’ of the Joseph Joseph cookware range.
FINAL RENDERINGS: 2D renderings created in Photoshop.
DESIGN COMMUNICATIONS 3 WEEKS
BRIEF Design a radio, within a set rectangular template.

when i was young i couldn’t
reach public telescopes, I wanted to know what i might see.

made
mystery the experience memorable. the thought of seeing an
infinite possibility of things, was amazing.
this made me curious.
HOW TO USE THIS
‘TELESCOPE’ 1. Take photo Go photograph something you find interesting.
2. write thought
WHY DO LEAVES CHANGE COLOUR?
Write down a thought to accompany the picture.
send & share Send the photo and thought to the ‘telescope’.
4. go Explore The ‘telescope‘ displays a slide-show of all the photos and thoughts that have been shared.
WHY DO LEAVES CHANGE COLOUR?

THIS works as a metaphor for
SCIENCE 1. Make an observation Find something you don’t understand, experiment and document it.
2.
Results of Experiment.
create Hypothesis Then decide how and why your observation is the way it is.
3. publish & share Publish your findings and share them amongst the scientific community.
4. go Explore Explore other discoveries and learn.
