BRIEF 5

2013: 20 influential practices from 13 countries. 4 weeks. Exploring the different practices from around the world that have influenced me over the past 3 years. Relating to my own personal practice, showcasing studios that are able to find the perfect balance between experimental aesthetic based design with functionality. Main focus of the book is finding out how these studios are able to reach the perfect balance between functionality and aesthetics. Also using it as a last port of call to speak to designers whilst still being a student. Codebreaker – 3 months. Producing all the design work behind a new exhibition at the Science Museum all about computers and coding. Chose this brief because, being design for the culture sector it means we would have pretty much creative freedom to produce some experimental, concept driven outcomes. Typeface Design – 2 months. Design a new fashion based sans serif typeface. Exploring an area of design that I have not yet attempted, type design, tried this as an experimental brief to see how well I could design type. Bambooman – 3 months Designing album artwork for an up and coming producer 'Bambooman'. Chose this brief because again it gave me the opportunity to be completely experimental with my outcomes. With design for music sector offering creative freedom to be completely expressive with design work and produce some unique, creative artwork. Also allowed me to explore a range of print processes. Fashion Branding - 3 months. Branding a graduating fashion student. Design for designers, ive never really been a fan of branding however due to this brief being design for designers it allowed me to be completely expressive with my outcomes and try a range of print processes. Cooper's Cafe – 1 month – not finished. Creating the visual identity and promotions for a breakfast cafe. I chose this brief because it was a live brief, so it meant that I would be getting my work out there. However I instantly hated the brief and didnt end up completing it, this was due to designing menus for breakfast shops isn't the kind of designer that I wish to be, finding the project boring and struggling to produce fitting design work.
