Past &

Present One of the pleasures of editing each edition of CV Luxury is watching the publication grow with every issue. I am personally thrilled with our latest endeavor. We are thinking beyond print and embarking on a complete overhaul of our website, as well as welcoming the LUX daily blog to the Modern Living family. Nicole Giordano Ashjian is a joyous addition to our team and is heading up the creative for our digital platform. Each day we will be supplying new and exciting content to our website, allowing our readers to look beyond the printed page and take a peek at the inner workings of our CV Lux. Not only does the new site support video and interactive media, but it also affords the publication the opportunity to better serve our readers and advertisers. Another new member to the LUX team is writer, photographer and blogger Alison Du Pras. Ali brings new life to the publication with a conversational writing style and voice which is truly her own. In this issue, she discusses the importance of color this season and helps guide you through the vast shopping maze to really make the most of your wardrobe for spring (pg. 32). Each issue also brings new and exciting experiences. There was no better way to spend the Thanksgiving weekend than with our cover girl Lisa Vanderpump-Todd. Lisa graciously welcomed our resident Fashion Editor Lauren K.T. Wilson, along with myself and our crew, to her magnificent home set high atop Beverly Hills. Celebrity photographer Matthew Mitchell captured the true essence of Lisa (America’s favorite housewife) in this light and ethereal spread. Effortlessly regal is the best way to describe Lisa. Her interview can be found on page 52.

Another feature I am simply crazy about is the profile of Jane Avedikian-Tamberi’s fabulous garden. Jane is a legendary hostess known for her meticulously planned parties, which she caters for various non-profit organizations throughout the Valley. Not only is she a fabulous casual entertainer, but her handiwork can also be seen at the Valley’s premiere polo match, set in the picturesque hills above the city. Experience her garden on page 60. Also within these pages, you can find the home of Allison and Edward Karahadian. This pristine North Fresno home sits nestled within the premier Fort Washington neighborhood. Modern minimalism makes up the bold lines and décor of this Central Valley gem. Allison was gracious enough to allow our crew inside to capture some of her favorite entertaining spaces. The Karahadian’s are known for their casual California entertaining and have hosted guests at their residence for various non-profit benefits, including a one-of-a-kind tequila party (pg. 46). I hope this issue inspires you as much as it has inspired me. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box this spring and infuse some truly original pieces in your home, wardrobe or next party. So here’s to spring and everything this season offers our Valley. Cheers,

Occupation:

Favorite color:

President and CEO of Saint Agnes Medical, and I am a registered nurse. Saint Agnes was founded by the Sisters of the Holy Cross, and has been serving our Valley community for over 85 years. We have a wonderful staff and Physicians who are extremely committed to caring for our patients in body, mind and spirit. Saint Agnes is a very busy Medical Center, providing a full array of emergency, medical and surgical care. We are perhaps best known for our expertise in heart and vascular and cancer services, as well as obstetrical care. In 2014, we delivered more than 3,500 babies!

Blue - in any shade. It makes me think of nature: the sky, the ocean, blue hydrangeas. I love blue!

Marital status: I’m married to Andy (for 32 wonderful years!). We met at Fresno State we were assigned as lab partners in chemistry! He was in agriculture and I was in nursing, and both majors required the same organic chemistry class. We are so fortunate to have three children who are all grown up now. John is our oldest and is a third generation of Hollingsworths to attend California State University Fresno. Brittany graduated from California State University Monterey Bay in Kinesiology and recently was married this past summer in Santa Cruz. Sarah is our youngest and she, like her older sister, graduated from CSU Monterey Bay. She is now attending graduate school at Columbia University in New York. All three of my children were born at Saint Agnes and they went to Saint Agnes Child Care Center. We are fortunate to have a wonderful child care center on the Medical Center campus. It is an enrichment program and the staff takes great care of the children. It really makes a difference for working parents to have a day care program close to where they work. First job: My first job as a nurse was at Saint Agnes where I worked on the oncology unit. As a student nurse at Fresno State, I had experienced great support from the nurses at Saint Agnes, so I knew I wanted to be a “Saint Agnes nurse” as a new graduate. Birthplace: I was born and raised in Southern California in Los Alamitos, which is right by Seal Beach. When I was a senior in high school, I knew I wanted to become a nurse. I also wanted a “going away to college” experience so I considered the various nursing schools throughout California. I picked Fresno State because the nursing program was very well established and it was only a four-hour drive from my home. I had never been to Fresno before, so my parents came with me to visit the campus and I was very excited about what the university had to offer. What a great choice it was! Favorite “pig-out” food: We lived in Nashville for several years and I acquired a real affinity for southern food. My favorite southern meal is pulled pork, cornbread, coleslaw, baked beans, macaroni and cheese, and coconut cake for dessert. We moved our family to Nashville packed up all three children, plus the dog and the cat, and loaded in the family van so I could attend Vanderbilt University for graduate school. My husband was very supportive about that move. I completed both a Masters of Science in Nursing and a Master of Business Administration at Vanderbilt. All of us really enjoyed living in the South. It is a beautiful part of our country. The people are very charming and there is much to do there great food, great music, professional sports and Nascar racing. We have a lot of happy family memories from our time there.

Favorite game: Football is my favorite game to watch. I don’t like to play games, at least not sports, because I’m not very coordinated. Since both my husband and I are CSUF alumni, we always watch the Bulldogs. We both like baseball, too. We lived in the Cincinnati area when I was working for Deloitte Consulting Firm and we enjoyed going to watch the Cincinnati Reds play baseball. The stadium was new, the hot dogs were great and it was on the river so it made for a really fun outing. Now that we are back in California, we always root for the San Francisco Giants. I really do not participate in sports anymore, but I like to play mind games, like Cranium and Scattergories, as well as card games like Canasta. It is part of what we do at family gatherings. Every New Year, I resolve to: Do something that will help me be healthier. It might be about exercise or nutrition or healthy habits. I do the Health Watch spots on 1430 KYNO and I really do believe in the value of those health tips that I discuss, so I work on incorporating them into my life as well. Most valued material possession: Is a cat considered a material possession? I love my cat. He’s an inside cat named Bambino and he sits in the window every evening watching and waiting for me to come home. He follows my every step all evening. Since he doesn’t go outside, I’m a source of entertainment, and he’ll stalk me and pounce on me. He’s sweet and playful. My children picked him out for me at the SPCA as a surprise for Christmas. When I have some extra money I splurge and: Go antiquing. I don’t collect anything in particular, but I always find something interesting that catches my eye. My sister, Bonnie, and I were antiquing in Morro Bay recently and I found an old tin sand pail painted blue with several mermaids on it. It was so quaint and I decided I had to have it! Favorite city outside California: I worked for Deloitte Consulting out of the Cincinnati office for many years, and traveled around the country providing strategy and operations support for large health systems and academic medical centers. I loved the travel, and working in a new and interesting city. My favorite cities were Chicago, New York, Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Phoenix and New Orleans. Working in a city gives a different feel than being a tourist and I really enjoyed these cities. I met wonderful people and worked with great clients. Last goal accomplished: The healthcare industry is undergoing incredible changes considering the elements of healthcare reform. So, at Saint Agnes we have all been focusing on creating a care delivery care system with a broader focus on community-based services while continuing to preserve our great capability for acute inpatient care.

Favorite restaurant: We have great restaurants here in Fresno and when we have out-oftown candidates interviewing for a position at Saint Agnes, we take them to dinner at one of our locally owned restaurants—they are always impressed. Some of our favorites include The Palms, Parma, Cracked Pepper, The Manhattan, FIVE, Campagnia’s, Pismo’s, Harris Ranch and Limon. Favorite pizza ingredients: My favorite pizza is a Me-N-Ed’s combination with pineapple. It has to have the pineapple! Best asset: I have always had a very good memory and I hope it doesn’t fade on me now. People tell me that I project a sense of calm and control that is helpful during stressful events. I think I have a good energy level and I am definitely not a quitter. Favorite President: Ronald Reagan was the first president I voted for in 1984. My husband and I had an opportunity to visit the Reagan Library in Simi Valley last month and it was a very interesting visit. It highlights the many important aspects of his leadership and his wonderful accomplishments both as Governor for the State of California, and as President of the United States. His belief in “peace through strength” really was effective during a turbulent time in our world. He was a great communicator and inspired people in such a genuine way Nobody knows: I have discovered that Pinterest is a delightful way to spend some time. Originally I thought it was so strange that people would spend time looking at other people’s pictures. Now I’m right there, too, pinning pictures to my boards. I get excited when someone likes something that I’ve pinned and pins it.

river to Topoc toward Bullhead City, and then down the river to Parker Dam. My parents gave us great summer experiences at Lake Havasu. I’m a sucker for: School kids selling things for their fundraisers. I can’t say no, especially to the Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. They are so excited and proud about their uniforms! Best show on television: I watch anything on Home & Garden TV (HGTV). It’s always cheerful, with beautiful colors, patterns and places. House Hunters International is my favorite. Favorite vacation spot: Anywhere with a beach Best time of the year: Summertime is my favorite time. I love hot weather. I’m always fascinated by the way women: Have great capacity for action. Women have tremendous energy. The world would be a lot better off if people: Embrace the following values of compassion, care for the poor and underserved, respect, excellence and social justice. We display artwork highlighting these values around the Medical Center Each features a Bible verse, selected by the Sisters of the Holy Cross, a verse that expresses the way that value can be demonstrated when caring for others. We provide better care when we demonstrate these values with our patients, their families and each other. I think the world would be a better place if everyone in it embraced theses same values, too.

Best advice I ever got: “People support what they create.” It’s so important to include people in generating ideas, planning, and introducing innovation and solutions. They want to be involved. It takes a team! Best advice I ever gave: Wash your hands! It kills germs. And get your flu shot! I always know I’m in for a laugh: I am always entertained by comedies with Jim Carey or Will Farrell. I think Steve Carell is really entertaining, too. I saw Little Miss Sunshine a couple of times with my two daughters and we really laughed. The best thing my parents gave me: A strong faith and a good life experience. While I was growing up they took us to Lake Havasu every summer for boating and waterskiing, and they had this four-wheel drive Jeep that we would take out in the desert. Lake Havasu is on the Colorado River along the California and Arizona border, and we would spend hours out on the lake going up the

Pat LaRocca - Correction Jan/Feb 2015 If I could live anywhere in the world I would choose: Where I live now. I like to go to other places, as I have mentioned, but I love living in Fresno because this city is my true home with my friends, my family and the community who has continued to be so good to me over the years. Fresno will always be home to me — she and I are like a well-worn shoe... we just fit together perfectly. I love Fresno!

SPRING COLOR TRENDS STORY ALISON DU PRAS

Spring is a season of change and rejuvenation, making it the perfect time to refresh the color palette in your wardrobe. After a long winter spent in the comfort of dark tones, now is the time to seize the moment, wear less black (we’re all guilty) and explore the advantages that spring’s color trends have to offer. Far from the exhausted variations of pinks and pastels, designers worked with understated classics this season that take on a whole new role when paired with the proper vibrant accents. You may be surprised by the outcome and how easy it is to incorporate the same shades into your own lifestyle. A vital influence for spring was the golden decade of the ‘70s, but you won’t find hot pink or groovy green in any of the collections. According to the spring pantone color report “there is an emphasis on the cooler and softer side of the color spectrum, with bold color taking a more supportive role as an accent.” Imagine revisiting the fashion scene of the ‘70s without all of the bright orange corduroy, tie-dye tank tops or cringe-inducing patterns. You’d be left with effortlessly cool flared denim, fringe in all the right places and just the right amount of femininity in your florals. This is the picture of the current season, which is reflected by muted tones and leaves the drama of the era to nostalgic silhouettes reinvented for the modern woman. Pantone hits the nail on the head with their color lineup, which includes almost every shade of the rainbow in a unique way. Aquamarine, toasted almond, tangerine, strawberry ice and lucite green were a few that were noticeably utilized by designers and can be incorporated into any woman’s closet with minimal effort. Also included were a few deeper hues such as marsala, glacier

32 CV LUXURY

grey and custard, which lend an appropriate air of sophistication to the list. Marsala in particular stands out as a strong color for spring 2015 because of its pairing possibilities. The wine-colored hue looks polished without being overdone and pairs well with white, navy, lavender and olive, just to name a few. As pointed out by Pantone’s executive director Leatrice Eisemen, “Marsala enriches our mind, body and soul, exuding confidence and stability. Marsala is a subtly seductive shade, one that draws us into its embracing warmth.” Aside from Marsala, any of these colors can be worn fearlessly with a head-to-toe monochromatic look, which is also a noted trend from the pre-fall shows. Try a silk jumpsuit at first and work your way up to a daring three-piece ensemble to achieve a truly posh appearance. If matchy-matchy isn’t exactly your thing, then explore the bohemian inspired patterns of the season and pair with brighter accessories like a statement clutch or shoe. The most important detail to consider when shopping the trend is the actual shade and saturation of the color. Strawberry ice is pink in theory, but the actual variation between the two shades is a night and day difference that can alter the whole look. Moving past the strong influence of the ‘70s, some designers chose to walk on the modern side, notably with punches of primary colors. Balmain mixed bright red, yellow and blue between black and white stripes, keeping in track with the recurring aesthetic of athleticism. Alexander Wang did the same, although the stripes were distorted and curved in modern movements.

Cherry red was a main concept for top houses such Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton and Gucci. Comme Des Garçons’ collection was entirely this shade, focusing on the design implications instead of a variety of colors. However, it was yellow that really took the lead as far as bright colors go. Yellow is infamous for being difficult to pull off, particularly for women with blonde or red hair, but a bright zing of yellow is fresh and versatile when paired with complementary colors such as the aforementioned aquamarine. This head-turning lemon hue was everywhere from Celine to DKNY, Michael Kors, Diane Von Furstenberg and Delpozo, proving exactly how underrated the color really is. The most versatile of colors brought to light this season is army green which was a major influence for Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren, Gucci and Chanel. The color looks amazing in almost any fabric, particularly a thin and light suede material, as done by Jason Wu. The color looks wonderful when paired with brown, khaki, navy, custard, light blue and even grey. If the thought of wearing anything military-inspired makes you flinch, opt for a darker forest green shade instead, which becomes perfectly suitable for spring when worn with light airy fabrics.

34 CV LUXURY

While talking about color trends, it is impossible to overlook the long-running trend of no color at all. Monochromatic black or white looks haven’t lost any steam in the fashion world and are the most effortless way to make a bold statement. To style this trend, follow Balmain and Givenchy’s lead and aim for pieces with interesting details such as a strong silhouette or unexpected cutouts. Take this minimalist look as an opportunity to show off your strongest accessories by adding a cuff bracelet or statement shoe to add a balanced amount of interest. Because the color palettes of spring are so modest and understated, it’s intelligible to purchase investment pieces which will be equally as suitable for the fall season. In particular, marsala, army green, toasted almond, aquamarine and glacier grey are colors that won’t fall out of style once the temperature drops back down.

SHOPPING IN

LOS ANGELES STORY ALISON DU PRAS

In a metropolis that so many celebrities and power players call home, it’s not a huge surprise that Los Angeles has one of the best shopping scenes in the world. Occupied with luxury cars and lavish lifestyles, the City of Angels has the best to offer anyone seeking therapy in the form of a great purchase. Los Angeles is revered for its world-famous shopping areas, such as Rodeo Drive and Third Street Promenade, but the size and diversity of the city means there are stores almost everywhere you go. Planning where to spend your limited time is crucial to having the best possible experience and not miss out on anything. If you don’t feel like you’ve left LA with some of the best purchases of your life, you probably didn’t try the right spots.

CV LUXURY 37

A great place to start is one of the established shopping centers, which offer an organized method to the madness. Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills is a must for anyone who has never been and offers the most luxurious experience to its shoppers. The top names in high fashion line both sides of the pristine street where Lamborghinis and Maseratis casually drive through on a regular basis. The shops are limited to the highest caliber, which include Chanel, Fendi, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Tom Ford, Celine, Dior and many more. You can shop at Tiffany’s or Versace on Two Rodeo Drive, which is a cobblestone walkway at the end of Rodeo with a European aesthetic. There are plenty of restaurants that match the quality level of the shops as well, all within walking distance. Il Fornaio is an excellent, but relaxed restaurant right off of Beverly that is always open and has a nice café vibe. If you’re looking for something a bit more exclusive, you might try booking Urasawa, which is an intimate Japanese restaurant that takes limited reservations per night and is hidden right off of Rodeo. Another top tourist destination that shouldn’t be missed is Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica, where you’ll find a higher variety of retailers and more street entertainment. The road is blocked off to traffic, which makes it pleasant to walk around. There are tons of restaurant options when you need a break from all of the shops, which span three blocks from Wilshire Boulevard to Broadway. Some top shopping destinations on this street include Allsaints, Burberry, Fred Segal, Madewell, and Nordstrom. The street has a great ambiance and is decorated with over-the-top, life-size topiaries in the shape of various animals, making it a great spot to take the family. It’s also within walking distance from the Santa Monica Pier. Westfield Century City is a popular outdoor mall, which is three levels and has almost every retailer you can imagine. From luxury retailers like Louis Vuitton and Armani Exchange to more practical options like Free People and Zara, you’ll find a little bit of everything here. Shopping outside in the consistently beautiful weather will make you wonder why anyone would want to shop indoors with less-than-fresh air and fluorescent lighting. The food options at this mall are surprisingly great, housing the must-try restaurant Breadbar that will restore your faith in eating at the mall again. Other shopping complexes include The Grove, Hollywood & Highland, The Americana at Brand, The Beverly Center, Santa Monica Place and Westside Pavilion. Westside Pavilion is frequently used as a location when filming various shows and is the mall used in the famous ‘90s movie Clueless. All of these malls have a fairly similar lineup of stores including Nordstrom, J. Crew, BCBG Max Azria and Anthropologie. The main perk of shopping in the third largest city in the world is the diversity of options you have outside of malls, which can sometimes feel like you’re just shopping back at home. Los Angeles has many streets that are lined with independent shops and boutiques filled with character. For a more unique shopping experience, you might try some of Los Angeles’ shopping neighborhoods listed below which have come about somewhat organically and give you a more authentic taste of the city’s shopping landscape. Robertson Boulevard is one of the most elite shopping areas in LA, and is well known for being frequented by celebrities and paparazzi on a regular basis. Some of the best boutiques are Intermix, Zimmermann, Madison and Les Pommettes, which neighbor luxury retail giants like Chanel, Ralph Lauren and Nanette Lepore. After you’ve emptied a few accounts, you can relax and have lunch at the world-famous restaurant The Ivy, which serves contemporary American cuisine and has a small cottage-like ambiance despite the regular celebrity visits. La Brea Boulevard (between Beverly and West Third) is the perfect 38 CV LUXURY

place to shop if you’re looking for something completely unique. The street is filled with eclectic and high-end shops that will keep people asking, “Where did you find that?” Some notable shops include What Goes Around Comes Around (a luxury vintage store that has an evolving collection of Chanel and Hermes pieces any woman would drool over) and the contemporary/streetwear centered shop American Rag Cie. Parking is typically easy to find in this area and if you like sushi, then Sugarfish by celebrity sushi chef Sushi Nozawa is the place to go. Melrose Avenue is another shopping area that is a must-see for those with a high shopping endurance! There are tons of shops up and down Melrose that vary from Kitson and Urban Outfitters to high-end options like Herve Leger, Vivienne Westwood, Marni and Alexander McQueen. The boutique scene is definitely in full swing on Melrose with some highly respected names such as Tenoversix, Creatures of Comfort and Resurrection calling the popular street home. If you get tired of shopping for your closet, Melrose also offers a great variety of stores for the home such as Adam Hunter, Mogul and Dedon. Blu Jam Cafe is a popular place to sit down and take a rest with gourmet global cuisine and a double espresso to get you through to the next destination. Abbott Kinney Boulevard is heaven for shoppers with a fashion forward, but unique style. Among contemporary designers such as IRO and Rag + Bone, you’ll find just about every other quirky genre of shopping that you can imagine in some of the most respected boutiques in LA. Guild is a high-end shop with a distinctive mix of designer pieces and an impressive collection of vintage Rolex’s. Satine is another boutique with luxury pieces that you likely won’t find in any Barney’s or Saks. They specialize in up-and-coming designers like Ksubi, but still have a few classic favorites, such as Valentino, in stock and the environment is very relaxed, just like the rest of Venice Beach.

An underrated shopping area that’s on the rise is Downtown Los Angeles. The main shopping attraction used to be the Fashion District, but other high-end retailers have moved in like Acne Studios, which has been praised for revitalizing the run-down area. Brigade is a great boutique to check out on Seventh Street, which carries a great variety of contemporary brands that are high-end, but wearable. Austere is another must-visit when in downtown, which is a lifestyle store featuring Scandinavian products that are artfully arranged and correspond with how the product would naturally be used… a bit like a luxury Ikea. Of course, if you’re in downtown, you also have to stop at Bottega Louie, a restaurant/pastry shop that will make you want to move in next door. Shopping in LA is exciting because things are constantly in a state of change. Downtown is expected to flourish in the near future as a thriving community to live, shop and dine in, evidenced already by certain successful businesses in the area. Rodeo Drive is also constantly shifting around with designers improving their stores and making extreme changes. Louis Vuitton just recently unveiled a three-story store they’ve been renovating over the past year, and features a made-to-order service for women’s and men’s leather goods—which is more of a reason than I need to justify a shopping trip to LA. With the weather picking up and Fashion Week passing by, it’s time to take shopping to the next level and explore your options for a stylish spring.

STATEMENT STORY ASHER COREY PHOTOGRAPHER EDDIE MELIKIAN ITEMS PROVIDED BY RSVP PLEASE AT THE PALATINE

Whenever I decorate a room, I always try and find one piece of furniture or décor that creates a “wow” moment. I have always been fond of a statement chair or an exceedingly spectacular table. A statement piece has the power to draw your focus to a room and define your personal style, whether with a pop of color or pattern and, of course, the unexpected mixture of color, texture and shape. This one item can set the tone for an entire room with maximum impact—something your guests will continue to chat about even after they have left your home.

Pinpoint Your Personal Style Before you start designing your space, you should ask yourself one simple question: what is your personal style? Look at the space and evaluate what, aesthetically, will work well with your architecture. This is an essential step to help pinpoint your personal style and aid in mapping out the appropriate vibe. Another thing to remember when working out the design of your home is that every room does not need to have the same style. Feel free to mix up colors and shapes in your statement pieces, but make sure that each space speaks to each other. There should be one common thread that tells the story of your home. The possibilities are endless, so embrace the décor that most speaks to you and your environment. Decide On Your Statement So you’ve decided on your aesthetic and came to the conclusion that your sparse dining room could use an over-the-top “wow” impact. But what would really tell your story? So many people get overwhelmed with dining rooms in particular. I mean what is there really to do with such a utilitarian space? It consists of a table and chairs, and normally has a window anchoring a long rectangular space. First off, if your dining room is a rectangle, get a rug that reflects a neutral state of mind. A soft monochromatic design will help anchor the space without overwhelming it. Look for an oversized oval table. This will help break up the lines of the room. When selecting chairs, don’t be afraid to mix ‘n’ match. I personally think that the chairs at the head of the table should be somewhat dramatic and all the side chairs should maintain a neutral color tone. For a “wow” statement, invest in a signature chandelier. I am currently crazy about Jonathan Adler and his puzzle piece lighting fixture. Don’t be afraid to switch up styles in your lighting fixture. Another fun idea is to get rid of the overused sideboard. Maybe bring in a bar cart and round mirror. Your drapes should be effortless and always remember, an appropriate puddle is necessary. Then for the crown jewel of the space: dishes! Yes, this is where you can really allow your imagination to wander. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns. Keep some things consistent, like the napkin rings and stemware, but let your dishes do the talking for your table. Also remember to invest in quality products. They do last longer and generally make for legacy pieces that can be passed down from generation to generation. Remember, design should be a fun and a rewarding experience. If you do find yourself questioning what choices are best for your space, make a mood board or pull clippings from various magazines or online resources. Ask a close friend their opinion or call on a professional to help you execute your vision. Once you nail your aesthetic, your home will speak in a whole new language to you and your guests, making a more personalized and inviting environment.

dward and Allison Karahdian graciously invited our crew into their North Fresno residence. This home is the perfect blend of understated opulence. The moment you walk in, you are greeted with oversized windows from the living room that bathe the space in light. This space is anchored by artwork on the far right wall and built-in shelves across the spectacular living room. Dramatic lighting glows on various art pieces, and one-of-a-kind blown glass bowls and trinkets. A baby grand sits left of the fireplace. A mixture of tones, fabrics and woods make up the design aesthetic of the space, which was mostly designed by Edward.

Right off the foyer, you see the classic dining room. The table has a beautiful piano finish. Minimalistic art is displayed as an oversized glass chandelier casts a glow, accenting the dramatic red walls. Anchoring the space is a custom walk-in wine room. There the couple stores all of their favorite vintages, making it easy while they host various dinner parties, which they do often. Edward is an amazing cook and his specialty is pizza, which he prepares in the outdoor pizza oven right off the pool. Every year, they host a variety of summertime get-togethers—where they entertain close friends and acquaintances—that go way into the evening. Right off the dining room sits the kitchen. This bright space has a French country twist. The walls are yellow and a farm sink sits in the island looking out on the breakfast room with an idyllic view of the backyard. From the breakfast room you have view of the gated herb garden, which is lined in pea gravel, reflective of gardens you would find in Europe. The couple enjoys growing fresh ingredients for their meals and signature cocktails, one of which is a fresh gin and cucumber martini. Back inside the kitchen, various cookbooks and knickknacks line the shelves. Fresh flowers are a standard for this room, which is used often in this household. Off the kitchen sits the back staircase. This brings guests upstairs to the contemporary game room. Custom artwork is a focal point in this space, anchored by an oversized sofa and television. Creams and gray tones complete the calming feeling of this space. A hallway can be found behind the wet bar, leading to a plush oversized guest room and bath, complete with one-of-a-kind light fixtures and a walk-in shower. Also upstairs on this side of the house is where Edward and Allison have their home office. The space is tucked away behind frosted glass pocket doors. Copious amounts of storage can be found on this level, concealed behind flush custom cabinetry they had built to store all of their holiday decorations, and various odds and ends. When you head back to the foyer, a spiral staircase leads to another isolated office space lined in bookcases. This is a more intimate area for the couple. Off this second office/library, a sauna can be found. There is tons of personality in the blue room. Here Edward stores his record collection, which they like to break out and listen to during quiet evenings at home. Back downstairs is where the master suite resides. The custom geometric wallpaper makes for a soothing, relaxing space. Per-

fectly matched, the textured paper makes a statement the moment you walk into the room. The master bath has green tile and another enormous walk-in shower. The one thing I find most appealing about this house is the love the family has for their home. There was an enormous amount of detail and thought that went into each space—truly one-of-akind and filled with special touches that only these owners could infuse. It’s a true feast for the senses and something that could never be duplicated in any other home… a signature abode that will leave guests with an impression to last a lifetime.

has done more in the past five years than most people can hope to accomplish in a lifetime. The multi-talented businesswoman not only appeared on three reality shows (Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Vanderpump Rules and Dancing with the Stars), but also wrote her own book, opened three restaurants, started two new companies (Vanderpump Pets and LVP Sangria), designed a tableware set, created a skincare line named Epione and writes for Beverly Hills Lifestyle magazine. Aside from her remarkable resume, Vanderpump boasts impressive personal accomplishments, as well. Her marriage has been going strong for 30 years, she’s maintained an amazing appearance and reputation, and supports multiple charities simply as a personal hobby. What will the Vanderpump powerhouse choose to dominate next this year?

“There is so much I love writing about, and I have found myself doing it more and more.

Do you remember where you were and what you were doing when you were asked to join the RHOBH? Is it what you expected? Why or why not? I was approached and asked to test for it. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do it, but now I am so glad I did, as it afforded me many opportunities. What is your favorite reality show? Vanderpump Rules!

What countries have you lived in? Which one is your favorite? Why? I have lived in London, the countryside of England, Monte Carlo, the South of France, LA and Beverly Hills. Even though America has captured my heart, my favorite place to live has to be France. Who sent you the last text message you received and what did it say?

What is the first thing you do in the morning?

I was in Miami, judging the Miss Universe pageant and my last text received was from Robert Greenblatt of NBC saying, “Wow! Thank you!”

I brush my teeth, eat breakfast, feed Giggy and exercise.

Any new shows, books or plans for 2015?

To look as fabulous as you do, we would all like to know your workout routine. How do you fit that into your schedule?

Besides the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Vanderpump Rules, I am also going to be showcasing my new jewelry line on Evine Live, which will have access to the 87 million television homes that the ShopHQ network has built.

I walk for 45 minutes on the treadmill and listen to the news, answer emails… I’m always multi-tasking. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I am quite happy with myself— with both the positive and the negative. Who is your celebrity crush? Oh, I have more than one: George Clooney, Colin Firth and Ralph Lauren. What made you decide to create LVP Sangria? Where can we find it? Our sangria has been successful for years at both our restaurants, Sur and Pump. Creating the LVP Sangria was my husband Ken’s and my daughter Pandora’s idea. It is 100% Spanish wine with no sugar added. It is available in the traditional red and, because it’s my signature color, also in pink. You can find it at lvpsangria.com, Gelson’s and Ralphs markets. How would you compare Sur to Pump? What is each of their signature dish? How about a signature drink? At Sur, the Crispy Chicken or the Meatloaf are definitely the signature dishes. Of course, the sangria is the most popular drink on the menu at both restaurants, especially after Jennifer Lawrence recreated a Vanderpump Rules intro showing it. How do you keep Vanderpump Rules fresh and exciting? Will you be adding more cast members next season? Will we see more of your daughter, Pandora? Well, Vanderpump Rules will always be fresh and exciting when you have 20-somethings coming and going with new story lines. We will be adding new people to the show in the future, but I won’t say whom! What was it like appearing in Lady Gaga’s video? What was your favorite part? At first, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do it, but when Lady Gaga called herself to ask me, I just couldn’t turn it down. However, there was one stipulation: Giggy had to be in it. Lady Gaga said yes and the rest is history. I found her to be brilliant!

56 CV LUXURY

Reading through your Twitter feed, it’s very apparent that dogs are a large part of your everyday life. Did you have a childhood dog that inspired your love for them or is it because of your current dog, Giggy? I had cats growing up, not dogs, but I have always been passionate about them. Giggy is on my lap right now going home from Miami. You’ve been married to your husband for over 30 years and have done things that would break up most marriages, such as reality television and working together, particularly in the restaurant business. What are your secrets to a happy and successful marriage? Simple: laughter and respect. What made you decide to pursue writing and why did you choose Beverly Hills Lifestyle magazine? What is your favorite topic to write about? There is so much I love writing about, and I have found myself doing it more and more. Travel and hotels would be fun to write about. When hanging out with your daughter, what is your favorite thing to do together? It truly doesn’t matter what we are doing, we just love being together. Would you ever consider designing clothing or accessories lines for fans who love your style? I don’t see myself designing clothing… for right now, it is all about the jewelry—real and costume. As a successful businesswoman, what is your biggest tip for managing your time wisely? I don’t really plan, I just go where I am needed. Because I am passionate about my work, it never seems like work. However, I would like some more down time in the future.

THE HOSTESS DIARIES GARDEN PARTY

STORY ALISON DU PRAS PHOTOGRAPHER EDDIE MELIKIAN

Jane Avedikian-Tamberi is certainly no beginner when it comes to throwing an unforgettable garden party. Her hillside garden, which is terraced over gently sloping terrain and 40 tons of natural rock, gives guests a sense that they are far away from the golden hills surrounding Central California and have perhaps been transported to the refined hills of Tuscany instead. The relaxed, yet immaculately maintained area makes the perfect setting for her family to not only enjoy each other, but to extend the experience to their friends as well. However, a beautiful landscape is only half of the equation when it comes to the art of entertaining. There are endless advantages to moving your party outdoors this spring, especially with the unsurpassable weather sometimes taken for granted in California. Open space and fresh air paired with natural light sets an ambiance for the event that is impossible to replicate indoors. The great outdoors inherently gives us a sense of freedom and relaxation, two feelings that are imperative to having an excellent time.

“Shy away from styles that would be served on a white tablecloth...”

Throwing the Party Throwing a party is a whole different affair than attending one, and can potentially become stressful during such a season as busy as spring. Luckily, throwing a party outdoors is a whole different ballgame, requiring much less planning and effort than an indoor function of the same size. By nature, the event becomes more casual in a beautiful outdoor setting, where guests can wander and enjoy your garden without the narrowed confines of walls or ceilings. Decorating for the occasion becomes laissez-faire with only simple enhancements needed to set the scene. A few large potted flowers and herbs set around the main areas add a subtle touch of color and aroma. We like lavender, roses, and jasmine, but it’s important to consider the current characteristics of your garden and select complementary additions accordingly. If you’d like to go beyond the expected, a water fountain is a beautiful investment that will tremendously enhance the look and feel of your garden. The trickling noise of water in the background will make everything feel extra relaxed and enjoyable. Jane’s garden features a water feature built directly into the stonework that makes up the perimeter of her yard, and is smartly placed beside the outdoor dining table. If your party is in the evening, lighting is an essential element to consider. An outdoor fireplace is a wonderful feature to light up the night, although a well-designed fire pit can give a similar effect. Votive candles on the table keep your guests energized with the natural movements of the flames as the evening progresses. Insect-repelling candles set at the corners of the party area are also a smart idea. String lights overhead are a classic element that instills a sense of European style into your party, as long as you choose a sophisticated round bulb. Grouping these lights into large glass vases and placing them strategically is another chic way to add light and style to your scene. Setting the table is undoubtedly the most important—and most fun—aspect of planning your party. The table sets the tone for the whole event and gives your guests an impression of what kind of meal they will be having. For an outside affair, the dinnerware should be high quality without appearing too formal. Shy away from styles that would be served on a white tablecloth, and in62 CV LUXURY

stead choose warm and inviting plates to be centered upon woven tablemats. Pottery Barn and Anthropologie are excellent places to look first. Cloth napkins and stemmed wine and water glasses are necessities that allow you to infuse your own aesthetic in a casual way. Centerpieces should be of a smaller size and scattered in a relaxed manner about the table. Arrange desired flowers and herbs (optimally fresh-picked from your garden) into clear or muted vases that won’t take away from their natural beauty. Atop Jane’s table you can usually find six or seven fresh-picked roses grouped into clean white vases. Medium-sized decanters filled with sangria or citrus-infused water are also an aesthetically pleasing touch that ensures no one ever has an empty glass. When it comes to certain party elements, what is generally unthinkable indoors becomes obvious and brilliant outdoors— particularly, the concept of a self-serve cocktail or dessert area. Allowing your guests to choose freely what they would like only enforces the intimate and easygoing atmosphere. Appetizers consisting of locally grown in-season fruits and vegetables are the perfect way to start the evening, along with free-flowing wine from a favored winery. Keep it relaxed by forgoing a full bar and sticking to three or four really great drink options. A red and white wine are necessary, but homemade sangria and mojitos with varied fruits to add in are a fun way to keep guests happy as well. Music is another element to be considered, although it becomes less important in an outdoor environment. For a larger affair, you may try hiring a musician to play a classical instrument, such as a violin or acoustic guitar. The open environment will make the live music less claustrophobic and more luxurious. For smaller gatherings, simply play a Spanish guitar or French cafe playlist on Pandora and connect to a portable speaker, which can easily be hidden amid some foliage. Lawn games have recently become vogue again, and even women in heels can play a round or two of the simple French game Pètanque. Croquet and Bocce are also great games that look beautiful on your well-manicured lawn and offer a classic form of socializing.

What to Wear Certainly, the most enjoyable part of attending or throwing a party is planning out your ensemble. Outdoor gatherings offer a new genre of attire to explore aside from the average barbecue. The look should be lightweight and fashionable, erring on the conservative side with a few modern twists. Floral patterns are an obvious choice for women, but there are many options on wearing them imaginatively in 2015. Florals were found all over the runway this season from Marni, Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton, Max Mara and Céline, but not in your typical tea party fashion. The ‘70s seemed to be a dominant source of inspiration for many designers and provides the perfect relaxed way to wear the trend. Stay away from neon or flashy colors and lean towards more mature tones from this golden era, such as burnt sienna and beige. If you prefer a solid color look, opt for a cream or olive dress or jumpsuit with a high neckline and statement necklace. Tie-up wedges or pointed flats are a practical choice for footwear that won’t leave you aerating the lawn better than the gardener does. A punchy statement clutch (we love Edie Parker’s styles right now) looks beautiful set down on a table as opposed to the heavy leather bag you might take everywhere. When it comes to jewelry, now is the time to give your favorite costume jewelry a moment to shine or keep it dainty with one simple gold piece. Men should wear muted tones on bottom such as khaki, navy, slate, beige or dark brown. A pastel or lightly patterned shirt should be a button-up or polo style, and a light blazer or coat is recommended if the party goes past dark. Casual footwear, such as boat shoes, smoking slippers or thin-soled tennis shoes balance out the look. Adding an unexpected accessory, such as a modern pair of sunglasses, is the perfect way to make a subtle impression. Children have the most flexibility when it comes to looking adorable for spring parties. Little girls look darling in pastel or brightly colored cotton dresses and it’s the perfect time to show off their favorite pair of decorative (and perhaps glittered) shoes. A flower or bow pinned behind their ear completes the look and will be the perfect touch in any photos you may take during the occasion. Little boys will be dashing in khaki or denim shorts paired with a polo shirt and cardigan or a classic argyle vest.

A well-designed and maintained garden is absolutely something to cherish and feel proud of, and we can’t think of a better way to do so than by throwing the party of the season in your very own backyard. March through June are prime months to take advantage of the blossoming weather before the temperature reaches triple digits. Spring also hosts a large variety of events, which inspire (and sometimes demand) a party, such as bridal and baby showers. Alas, it is just as wonderful to throw a party simply for the sake of entertaining. So relax, pour your guests some more wine, and make sure to relish the environment of your garden in the company of good friends this spring.

STORY DAVID MANNING PHOTOGRAPHER EDDIE MELIKIAN

As many of you may not know, I started my career in writing as a columnist who exclusively wrote about cocktails. Shocking‌ I know. So when we were sitting around our planning meeting for this spring edition, the idea came up that we should feature fun, flirty spring drinks from some of our favorite dining establishments. As opposed to assigning this project out, I decided that I would take on the column for one last hurrah, so to speak. So here it is, my top five cocktails for the spring season.

Ginger, lemon and mint—oh my! This fabulous brew makes for an unforgettable taste that truly quenches all your senses and it’s surprisingly simple to make. First you will need to add ice to your favorite kitchen utensil—the SHAKER! Add your favorite type of vodka, a splash of nectar, three full mint leaves and the juice of one lemon. Muddling the mint is recommended to make sure you get the full-flavored effect. Once all the ingredients are assembled, shake thoroughly and strain the mixture into a frosted highball glass. Top the cocktail off with ginger beer and garnish with a mint leaf and lemon zest. I recommend pairing this drink with grilled salmon and a spinach salad. It surely will not disappoint.

Max’s Bistro & Bar: Black Rose If you are looking for a twist on the standard gin and tonic, then make sure to stop by Max’s and sample this premier beverage. You will want to combine rosemary-infused blackberry simple syrup with fresh blackberries. Max’s makes their own fresh syrup. Muddle the two together in a shaker. Add about two ounces of your favorite gin and shake vigorously. Grab a highball glass and strain the liquid over ice. Top off the elixir with soda water or tonic (completely your preference). Garnish the beverage with a fresh sprig of rosemary and then sit back and let the party begin! Just a word to the wise: if you are not a typical gin drinker, this cocktail may hit you a little harder than your normal beverage. The rich rosemary and blueberry flavor mask any trace of alcohol—but have no fear! This will quickly become a new seasonal favorite in your beverage repertoire.

Yosemite Ranch: Melon-tini Refreshing is the best way to describe this martini. This cool concoction is made from all fresh ingredients: muddled cucumber, strawberries and mint. The contents are then combined with Grey Goose Le Melon Vodka, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup and housemade lime sour. To serve, you will need to shake and double strain the cocktail into a frosty martini glass. If you’re looking for a cocktail to serve at your next dinner party, I suggest you stop by Yosemite Ranch and take note on how the staff makes this magical elixir. I suggest pairing this ‘tini with a summer salad and grilled chicken breast. The flavors are rich but not overpowering, meaning this drink can go from spring to summer seamlessly.

The Standard: Spring Sunset

The Lime Lite: Orange-Pomegranate Martini

The Standard: Spring Sunset Very seldom do I associate whiskey with spring… but boy was I proven wrong! This drink will be very popular among the ladies who tend to enjoy a sweet treat on a Friday afternoon. Here is what you will need: one large strawberry cut in half, two ginger cubes (about the size of a typical sugar cube), Crown Royal Apple Whiskey, fresh lime juice, simple syrup, soda water and Sprite. Muddle the strawberry, ginger cubes, simple syrup and lime juice together in a glass. You will then add the Crown Royal Apple Whiskey and shake for approximately 15 seconds. Double strain the liquid into a glass and add a splash of soda water and Sprite. Garnish the beverage with a slice of strawberry and lime wedge. This sugary sweet cocktail leaves no trace of alcohol so remember—pace yourself! It’d be easy to have three without even realizing you are drinking. The Lime Lite: Orange-Pomegranate Martini Some things just taste better as a full-bodied experience. If you are looking for something smooth and extraordinary, then you will want to try this cocktail on for size—and it’s surprisingly easy to make. Begin by pouring the following ingredients into a cocktail shaker: fresh juice from two oranges, juice from half a lime, two ounces of pomegranate liqueur and approximately four ounces of vodka. You will want to add ice and gently shake. Strain the contents into two martini glasses and top each off with a splash of lemon-lime soda. If you desire, you can garnish the drink with a slice of orange. This drink is sure to impress even the most discerning of guests. Try serving this cocktail with a fresh spinach salad topped with grilled shrimp.

HELLO GORGEOUS! CALIFORNIA CHROME: THE MANE ATTRACTION

Victor Espinoza (Jockey)

California Chrome (born February 18, 2011) is an American thoroughbred racehorse who won the 2014 Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Santa Anita Derby. California Chrome was named 2014 American Horse of the Year, as well as American Champion Three-Year-Old Male Horse. This chestnut-colored horse was named for his flashy white markings, called “Chrome” by horse aficionados. He went on to run in the Belmont Stakes for with an excellent chance of capturing the Triple Crown. He was stepped on by the horse coming out of the gate next to him, injuring his right front heel, but still finished fourth. After a month’s rest at Harris Farms in Coalinga, CA, he returned in late July to Los Alamitos, his home base and went on to run in the Breeders’ Cup Classic on

November 1, 2014, where he came in third, a neck behind the winner. His winning form was seen again on November 29, 2014 in the Hollywood Derby. California Chrome is the only horse in America with Grade 1 wins in 2014 for both turf and dirt tracks. Dedicated fans (and there are many), known as “Chromies,” actively support him and follow him, he is known affectionately as “The People’s Horse.” Senators Andy Vidak and Tom Berryhill co-authored a resolution that was presented on the Senate floor in June honoring California Chrome and his owners for his stellar performances. In addition, October 11, 2014 was proclaimed by the City of Fresno as California Chrome Day! This incredible horse ADVERTORIAL

also received the Citizen of the Year award from the City of Coalinga. Another big accomplishment was his Eclipse Award as Horse of the Year! California Chrome began 2015 at the San Antonio Stakes, where he finished second to rival, Shared Belief. He may travel to Dubai for the Dubai World Cup, the world’s richest race, in March. Truly a “rags to riches” story! Congratulations to all involved, especially Harris Farms! Best wishes to California Chrome for a healthy and successful future.
