Over the last seven years, the Luxury Awards have grown into one of the largest and most entertaining social gatherings of each event season. In true Gatsby fashion, this year did not disappoint as we celebrated in grand, over the top, and bold fashion. We pulled our inspiration from the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel, and infused a twist of camp culture as the icing on top of the seven-layer cake. Teresa Pries is no stranger to small business in Old Town Clovis. After having to downsize and eventually close her first store there, she spent a year doing odd jobs while trying to figure out her next move. That’s when a friend told Teresa about an upcoming sermon series at her church, which would be diving into Psalm 23. At the time, Teresa recalled being sad and disappointed in her job search struggle. That scripture “changed my life. I had realized at that point that God was preparing me for something better.”

n 2014, Teresa’s husband Dale told her he thought she should open a store again despite her initial doubts. “I thought ‘I’ve been there and done that and I don’t think I could recreate it.’” Yet after much time in prayer and thought, she made it happen that same year. “It was very small, about 600 square feet,” in Clovis’ DeWitt Building. Eventually her landlord gave Teresa a bigger spot, allowing her to add more product and increase the lines she carried, until the location Revival 23 currently occupies (just down the street) became available in July of 2017—it eventually took over the space next door. Later in 2017, developers asked Revival 23 to be part of a city revamp in Kingsburg— thus their second location was born. Greater demand led to the North Fresno store opening in 2019—now their third brick and mortar. Each store uniquely serves its area and will continue to evolve with the clientele there, with which Teresa is keenly in tune. “Because I work on the floor, too, I know a lot of our customers personally. So I know who I am shopping for and who I am presenting the store to.” Expansion online is next on the growth chart—shop and sign up for Revival 23’s subscription list when visiting their website, where E Gift Cards can also be purchased. Great denim, trendy blouses, jewelry, home décor, and fragrances have been the cornerstones of Revival 23 since its founding. Now coming up on its sixth anniversary this summer, Teresa credits her success, in part, to having an incredibly supportive family—her husband and daughter work at the store alongside her daily. “Back in the day, I tried to be everything to everybody.” So this time around, she also got pickier about merchandise. “I just expanded on everything I loved,” instead of trying to be everything to everyone and make everyone happy. “I’ve really taken a lot of time to bring product in that is affordable.” Teresa is proud to say that she runs her business in a manner that will allow prices to remain reasonable for customers. It’s of utmost importance “to have the look and to give them that extra service, give them a good experience that pretty much everyone can afford.” Come experience the breadth of what Revival 23 has to offer for yourself!

SOURCED FROM ALL OVER “My idea of a perfect vacation is not only working and buying, but it’s also going to cool flea markets.” Teresa visits many around California. “It’s exhausting, but it’s so much fun.” Round Top, Texas is another favorite picking destination, as it attracts many European vendors. (Her collection of antique bread bowls is a must-see.) “The Clovis customers have really dictated what they want.” So in the main room, Teresa prioritizes texture and products with “deeper and darker, rich colors. You have the beautiful leather from Hobo and our beautiful denim,” which are vey popular. It seemed befitting to be part of “the beginning of a revival in Kingsburg. No pun intended!” Teresa was hesitant to commit at first, but was sold upon seeing the beautiful building. “We’ve given our customers a satellite location” with Kingsburg. “They’re more of a boho look.” Though not as big as the flagship, you can always count on highend denim, leather bags, and jewelry there.

W

hat do you ask an interviewer? I wondered while preparing questions for Alyshia Ochse. The actor, author, and podcast host has spent a considerable amount of time portraying others and asking even more about how they got their starts in Hollywood. Through this research, I began to contemplate the brevity of how our individual stories intertwine and progressively influence others—Alyshia is on a lifelong mission to unearth those unique truths. Today, she boasts a slew of professional credits, though her work carries a common thread throughout: the art of storytelling. Alyshia grew up secretly writing poetry and hiding her desire to perform on stage. Despite being a gifted athlete, “I couldn’t do drama and sports at the same time. So the interest was always there … I just couldn’t be very vocal about it. I moved from Kentucky to Missouri when I was 10, and I realized how much of an outsider I was. Saying that I wanted to be an actor was going to make me more of an outsider.” A star on the soccer field, a knee injury in her senior year of high school swiftly ended her athletic aspirations. Then her best friend tragically died. Suddenly, writing became an outlet and coping mechanism. On paper it might appear that the acting bug came out of nowhere, but given that it was something that had always been imbedded in her from a young age, Alyshia recalls, “it was a huge wake-up call. I wasn’t doing what I wanted to be doing … It was a happy shift to kind of wake me up.” She went on to graduate from Notre Dame Academy in Covington, Kentucky, eventually graduating from the University of Kentucky with honors before moving out to California in 2005.

“The way I study characters, I build them from the psychology of their childhood forward. I’m really drawn to misunderstood, flawed human being. I think that’s what makes the most compelling storytelling because then we’re showing a full-fledged human.” With every character, she strives to get inside, feeling and having compassion for them so as to justify their behaviors, allowing her to be more open in real-life situations with people in her day-today life. “Judgement is arrogance. I can’t play a character from arrogance.” The multi-talented woman possesses an impressive list of television roles, including performances on How I Met Your Mother, Days of Our Lives, Melissa & Joey, General Hospital, Hart of Dixie, Satisfaction, Americons, Life Sentence, The Purge, and Ballers, to name a few. But her favorite role to-date inspired her to dive into a character's psyche in a way that clearly reflects her desire to understand the big picture. Playing Lucy in the 2014 season of HBO’s True Detective, opposite Academy Award Winner and Emmy Award Nominee Matthew McConaughey and Academy Award Nominee and Emmy Award Winner Woody Harrelson, holds a special place in her heart. “Best work I’ve gotten to do thus far,” Alyshia reflects, going so far as to call Lucy “yummy.” A prostitute who remained within a 5-mile radius of her hometown her entire life, the actor was able to get into the character’s head in a special way. “No one is going to get her like I get her,” Alyshia thought, and that sympathy is clearly visible in her acting.

“... the challenge in what you overcome is what every human being is attached to. And when I interview, I look for the challenge. I look for how that artist has overcome.” On the big screen, Alyshia has left her mark in the movies Stash House, Parker, The Other Woman, Home Sweet Hell, Bad Sister, Marauders, and Killer Contractor. Keep an eye out for two more (My True Fairytale and Adult Night), which are in post-production. With character comes opportunity, as “life lived” is the single most effective way to find empathy. “I’m living a whole separate life in memories and ideas beyond myself, so I kinda feel like I’m getting to exponentially live so much more life. Every character, for me, tends to come in at a point in time when I am struggling or need to face thematically what that same character is kinda struggling with,” Alyshia believes. “You call in what you need.” The characters she plays always speak to her personally. “I take away something different from every single character. Whether that’s more understanding for other people, more compassion for myself, a different type of resiliency,” leading to both growth and fulfillment. Take Alyshia’s latest film, She’s in Portland, for example. “In an alternate universe where I wasn’t an actor, I would probably have a full sleeve of tattoos, and a lip ring, and I get to fulfill that expression of myself without hindering my job moving forward,” says Alyshia with a laugh, referring to her role as Sage. “There’s elements of myself as a human that I get to fully express that are completely acceptable,” through acting. “Like the rage. The full expression of emotions that we as human beings try to limit ourselves from sometimes. I think that I get to fully have an excuse to work through those. It’s healing. It’s therapeutic, in a lot of ways. It’s research!” Alyshia is a researcher by nature. That One Audition, her podcast series launched in July of 2017, is clear evidence of that. She had been collecting the interviews for years before deciding to present them as a podcast. “What I do for a living is listen to other peoples’ journeys. For the podcast, it was a very natural enthusiasm and passion and inspiration. And I also just saw a big void.” As an actor, she gobbled up interviews that other actors gave, but never felt they got into the depths of what acting really is. “You know when you go on late night shows and people do those interviews? They’re doing an interview to sell a product. To me, that wasn’t interesting! … I care more about how many failures did you have along the way.” She structures her interviews from a place of pure curiosity, of a creative field that there is no right or wrong. “There’s just your way.”

When Alyshia first had the idea, it was just to get a deeper look into the audition process, and to allow other artists and herself to better understand different practices. “It’s such a deeply vulnerable thing that we as other artists very rarely get to experience another artist doing. You get to see the finished product, but you don’t see the process.” Coordinating the interview process goes something like this: “They’ve done something that intrigues me, or I like them as a person but we’ve never gotten into the nitty gritty of the work … I like to find a lull in their career, because for me, the hero’s journey, just like when you watch a movie or you read a book … the challenge in what you overcome is what every human being is attached to. And when I interview, I look for the challenge. I look for how that artist has overcome.” Her only requirement is that interviewees must be in the industry for at least ten years. “I can usually pick up on a theme,” Alyshia speaks of the podcast interviews. “What I love is when a person walks away from their interview and says to me, ‘Wow, I learned something about myself.’” Alyshia understands the power of knowledge and its application on a personal level. Through That One Audition, she is providing a platform for film industry professionals to share their own experiences in the hopes that it will serve its listeners in whatever compacity they may need. The first season of That One Audition wrapped its hundredth episode in November. “Proper, new interviews will be launched in April.” On screen, on mic, and on paper, Alyshia is constantly seeking to better not just herself, but anyone willing to listen and push themselves. Her characters broaden her own self-reflection. From her interviewees, “I am gleaning every tip, every practical thing they do, every tangible thing they do, as well as every spiritual thing that they do to remain calm and vigilant and resilient in this business.” Those are the keys in any creative field, but it is also universally good advice. Even in her book, Life Letters, which Alyshia published in 2014, she shows readers how to dive into a journey of self-discovery—something she is well-versed in and continues to practice through her range of work. We all have a story to be told—by following Alyshia Ochse’s example, we are all capable of leaving our mark, by helping to expand understanding, acceptance, and betterment of ourselves and our world.

or its annual Luxury Awards, CVLUX selected Make-A-Wish® Northeastern & Central California and Northern Nevada (MAW) as their 2020 beneficiary—a portion of the evening’s proceeds was donated to the charity, whose local chapter is one of the largest in the nation. No glamping here! We’re talking about style, not tents… But if you had to Google the term “camp” to get some clarity on the pop-culture reference, don’t feel bad—you aren’t alone.

F

irst published in the 1909 edition of the Oxford English Dictionary, the term denoted a then-popular word association, meaning: “ostentatious, exaggerated, affected, theatrical…” Over the years, the term has evolved to mean the aesthetic embodiment of one’s true self. “Camp is art that proposes itself seriously, but cannot be taken altogether seriously because it is ‘too much,’” American writer Susan Sontag explained in her book Notes on “Camp,” published in 1964. Camp, essentially, is fashion. What does CVLUX camp look like? We’re all about flamingos big and small, giant tropical leaves, and bold black and white this year. Gold accents are a given—obviously glitz is mandatory here… Now, let’s break it all down. Grass is green and the sky is blue—most people prefer it that way. But when there’s pink in the clouds, it’s difficult to look away. Pink in nature has a way of reminding us that time is fleeting, as it tends to make us reminisce about the most special of moments and memories. To see living, breathing, feather-clad pink is simply beyond. Behold, the flamingo. Ours graced the program cover, greeted guests upon entry, cornered the dancefloor, stirred everyone’s cocktails, and stood 9.5 feet tall while flanking the stage. Ever dreamt of being cooled by the gentle strokes of a giant fan held by a beautiful human on a balmy summer afternoon? Few of us will ever get to experience such luxury. Yet, you could probably have made that

happen with the tropical leaves at this year’s party. We actually had a couple people ask who our faux floral connection was. They were real. Every. Single. One. Yes, they looked that perfect. There were hundreds, in several varieties, framing the bar and stage screens, and atop every table. One could argue that it was wastefully extravagant to let such perfect folium sacrifice their lives for one mere night… Draperies obviously require a lot of yardage. What “hung out” for the night was excessive (lining the outdoor car tent, entranceways, and interior banquet hall), the simplicity of its black and white color scheme seeming almost ironic, yet cleansed the palate. Because of the monochrome backdrops and carpeting (totally forgot to mention that the step-and-repeat and stage were also carpeted in B&W stripes), the lavish décor was truly allowed to shine through unobstructed. Familiar with the “gild the lily” idiom? It referrers to the elusive process of adorning or embellishing something that is already beautiful or perfect. As if the flamingos and the leaves and the stripes weren’t over the top enough, everything left was gold. Come on, what’s more decadent than eating with gold flatware? Maybe being spoon-fed with gold flatware? We digress… Besides, guests were also seated upon gold chairs. CVLUX and the Luxury Awards help to maintain California’s luxury vibe as one of the Golden State’s benchmarks. Luxury is the name of our game, and we always win. Topping your best year after year is a tall order. Yet CVLUX Editor in Chief David Manning always finds a way. Going into the Luxury Awards party planning, there were a lot of theme options on the table—the team lingered within that space for several months until divine inspiration struck.

C

onsider this: if CVLUX was a place to stay instead of a magazine, it would be The Beverly Hills Hotel. Thus, the 2020 Luxury Awards theme was born! Reminiscent of the iconic resort, guests were wowed by the striking pink color scheme, black and white draperies, and live tropical foliage upon arrival to the 90210-inspired party. Valet service escorted people to arrive through two entrances at the building’s front, both of which fed into the area designated for photography. More contemporary than retro, signage was made of clear acrylic with white laser-cut logos to allow the extraordinary greenery to be visible from behind. The foliage and emblem duos made a stunning backdrop for pictures. Positioned with appropriately coordinated sponsorship placement, their impact throughout the entire venue was ongoing. Wide, striped carpets and a coordinating step-and-repeat was a fun, fresh take for photos. Candids and formal shots were taken by Ellie Koleen Photography, known for catching the most special of occasions with an artistic lens. A favorite from year to year, the photo booth was just as popular as ever!

Local public relations firm RPM PR got to test out their latest toy, a Glambot, on partygoers as they walked the black and white carpet. The filmed results were made available to the public with the release of CVLUX’s newest commercial video reel by Justice Films—check it out on www.cvlux.com! Transforming TorNino’s Banquets in Fresno, California takes a full business week. Justice Films had the foresight to position a GoPro to capture the entire duration of set-up, which was then played in time-lapse for the Luxury Awards audience as they took their seats for the show to start. Speaking of transformation, two major change-ups were implemented this year. The most obvious alteration was the dining room’s layout— instead of being centered in the width, this year’s stage was shifted to the far end, making the room feel even longer than it already is. Tables where then arranged in three tiers: Diamonds were set with premium placement near the stage, those who opted for the Dance Floor option were arranged around its edge, while the Signature tables were opposite the front and centered between the two bars.


Tables were set with three different linen options. One donned a bold leaf print (mimicking the tropical greenery accents) with pink napkins. The second was dressed in black and white tablecloths with pale green napkins. Lastly, a textured salmon pink (nearly the same shade as the giant flamingo décor) served as the base for black and white striped napkins. Each place setting utilized the 2020 Luxury Awards Program as a personal placemat. Napkins were tied in square knots and placed upon the upper left corner, a sort of “bow on top” for each guest. Gold flatware with white dipped handles were set in their appropriate places, with cylindrical stemware (for water, wine, and champagne) taking their places up top. Those who purchased bottle service had an additional tumbler at the forefront, with round mirrors serving as cocktail trays. Options for vodka, whiskey, and tequila had coordinating mixers and garnishes, with staff ready and awaiting any additional bar requests. Two full bar locations offered this year’s signature drink: “The SPARK-ler,” named for the After Party sponsor, realtor Rob Sparks. Much like a “Rose Kennedy,” the cocktail was a perfectly pink concoction of vodka and club soda, attaining its deceptively unassuming hue from a splash of cranberry juice. Lime wedges garnished the tumblers, again nodding at the pink and green scheme. Once cocktail hour wrapped, a three-course dinner was served while the 2020 Diamond and Luxury Awards were presented. Everyone started with the Fried Goat Cheese Balls (a golden-brown pair atop an arugula

base, drizzled with honey, served with flatbread crackers). Then came the Chopped Romaine salad (dressed with buffalo mozzarella, avocado, crispy pancetta, tomatoes, and a creamy balsamic). Guests pre-selected one of three entrées: Charbroiled Filet Mignon (a 9-ounce cut grilled and topped with herbed butter and micro greens, accompanied by baby rosemary potatoes and asparagus), Rigatoni with Roasted Chicken & Pine Nuts (tossed in a white wine cream sauce with cherry tomatoes and baby spinach, garnished with Parmesan cheese shavings), or Portobello Eggplant Stacks (also composed of squash grilled to perfection, topped with diced cherry tomatoes, on a bed of arugula, finished with a balsamic glaze). Then it was time to dance! The addition of the After Party was actually the second key change at the 2020 Luxury Awards. Trucker hats and neon pink glow sticks were at the ready as people flooded the floor, dancing late into the night. Waiter-passed sliders, fried mac-and-cheese balls, and French fry munchies proved to be big hit! On the way out, partygoers grabbed black and gold reusable tote bags containing party swag—mementos from Central California’s event of the year. A little slice of SoCal’s LUXlife right in our own backyard, it was a night filled with glitz, glamour, and great music, though fueled by the ongoing contributions of the Central Valley’s most outstanding names in business and philanthropy. RIVERSTONE has been named the CVLUX 2020 Luxury Award Winner for the Best Community of the Year for the second year in a row and it is quite an honor! With a lot happening in the community, we could not be more grateful for this recognition. Riverwalk is almost complete with preleasing of its first two retail buildings of the million and a half square feet of retail, office and entertainment space—vertical construction is getting ready to start soon. Riverstone’s first school—Stone Creek Elementary—is under construction with its planned opening August 2021. We are excited to be building a new-age school in one of the Central Valley’s top school districts— the award winning Golden Valley Unified. With almost 300 new homes added to Riverstone in 2019, the new happy residents just keep coming.
