Publisher’s Perspective
Holiday Cheer
The holiday season always seems to evoke a sense of nostalgia. It gives us an opportunity to reflect on the year that has been and aspire hope for the one to come. Through this shared experience, our relationships grow and foster a common connection throughout our community. This thread of time is what bonds us together. As we assembled this latest edition of CVLUX, we kept this thought in mind.
One of Fresno’s most fabled experiences is that of the historic Christmas Tree Lane. For over a century, this stretch of Van Ness has catered to thousands of people longing to celebrate in the season of giving. I remember the first time I drove down the Lane. I found myself in awe of all the displays and being embraced by an overwhelming feeling of camaraderie. To learn more about this holiday tradition and how you can take part in the celebration, flip to page 46.
Also found within these pages are two homes decorated with their own personal flair. Local designers Krystal Bennett and Keynan Ammons have expertly found a balance between glitz and glamour and the casual elegance of everyday living. We’re sure you will find something that will inspire you in your own décor.
If you haven’t started decorating, be sure to check out our evergreens piece on page 64. This simple how-to will surely take the guesswork out of the equation. Don’t be intimidated by live greens in your own abode, as they have been used for centuries!
No matter how you choose to celebrate, let this holiday season be that of cheer and love for one another. So, raise a glass to the past and celebrate the future.

Home for the Holidays
Being home for the holidays is something to be savored, but it begs the question: what is home? Home is where the heart is, and it’s the people who hold your heart dear that make home feel so right. This holiday season, remember to take time to relish not just the place, but also the people who make this time so special.

A MODERN APPROACH TO ETIQUETTE
Entertaining at home is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Although I miss having the time to create more lavish parties, I relish this season with young children and am learning to embrace a more casual and spontaneous entertaining style. Take-out pizza has replaced caterers and full bars have given way to self-serve stations, but my core beliefs remain:
Party with Purpose. Delight the Senses. Cultivate Connection.
Party with Purpose
When I’m itching to host a party, I ponder a purpose. It could be a fall fête, a Friendsgiving dinner, or a neighborhood gathering to celebrate the opening of Christmas Tree Lane during the holidays. Whatever the reason, whatever the season, find a purpose and make a plan. Seasoned hosts understand that planning is the key to a party’s success: planning and practice.
My tip:
Create an inspiration board with images that evoke the feeling you want your guests to experience. Walk through the event in your mind to imagine how your guests will arrive, where they will gather, how they will transition, etc. Then develop a detailed timeline. I love lists because they take the guesswork and worry out of entertaining. As a former event planner, I anticipate that something will go wrong; therefore, I plan and prepare so that I can pivot at a moment’s notice.
Delight the Senses
Your guests’ first impression isn’t when they walk through your door; it is their first glimpse of the save the date or invitation. Whether it’s a Paperless Post email or a hand-delivered engraved card, your correspondence sets the tone for what’s to come and contributes to the excitement and anticipation. An event is a sensory experience. Consider how you will spark your guests’ senses. What visuals will they see? What music will fill their ears? What are the first flavors they will taste? How will you continue to surprise and delight them throughout the evening? A good party is one that guests don’t want to end!
My tip:
Hosting can seem overwhelming, so focus on what you do well and simplify the rest. I don’t cook, so I unabashedly hire help or source take-out. Favorites from local restaurants served hot on my platters are still favorites! I know that my family and friends love gathering over any type of meal, so I focus my attention on doing what I enjoy—setting a beautiful table with my china or festive paperware and a bounty of floral arrangements and festive décor.
Cultivate Connection
People mistakenly believe that guests remember the food that was served or the flowers that adorned the tables. What guests will undoubtedly recall is how they felt. And that feeling really has less to do with the delectable bites and glorious tablescapes, but has everything to do with the conversations had and the connections made. That’s what transforms party moments into lasting memories.
My tip:
Carefully curate a guest list that sparks friendships and inspires lasting connections. Include interesting friends, old and new. Be creative and intentional with seating arrangements to encourage mingling. And what do you ask of your guests? That they bring energy, charm, and wit to the party. Because, after all, seeing your guests having fun is what entertaining is all about.
Like my etiquette courses, I describe my entertaining style as a fresh take on the traditional. I embrace classic elegance while leaning into what’s en vogue. My goal for my clients is to feel competent and confident in everything they do!
At its heart, the purpose of etiquette is to connect, which begins with conversation. To connect with Chiara Riggs Sill, Founder of Etiquette Moderne, visit www.etiquettemoderne.com
Features Contributor Chiara Riggs Sill, Founder of Etiquette Moderne Photographer Ellie KoleenHolly Jolly Disco
Interiors Contributor Krystal Bennett Photographer Cori DerksenChristmas 2022 is the year of the disco, and I am here for it! I knew I wanted something playful and romantic for this year’s holiday theme, while also retaining a few traditional elements. I wanted to go above and beyond with how we decorated our main Christmas tree last year, which was simply doused in tinsel. It was a sight to behold, and I wanted to take that a step further this year by adding disco balls and a fun pop of color throughout. My daughter adores pink and begs me to decorate with it every year, so I thought this would be the ideal time to incorporate some pinks, blushes, and maroons while still keeping it sophisticated.
In the living room, I focused on the mantle because I wanted it to be the showstopper. I added groupings of golden candlesticks with multi-hued tapers and various-sized disco balls to make it really shine within the traditional garland that drapes the mantle. Tinsel was draped along the side, allowing its reflective light to cascade downward near matching stockings. My Christmas village also got an upgrade this year with the addition of some fun pink trees, which echo the overall color story of the space, and, of course, disco balls dispersed throughout the scene.
The dining room is where all our yummy Christmas dinners will take place, so I wanted to romanticize this space while still keeping it fun and shiny. The base of the tablescape is a beautiful blush cheese cloth. I then adorned the entire table with muted candlesticks and a traditional reindeer and garland centerpiece. Classic white plates are dressed up with gold-rimmed glass chargers, and the gold is reiterated in the napkin rings that hold gauzy pink napkins. It’s impactful, but also highly functional and ready for dinner anytime. I can’t wait to have all our family meals here this Christmas season.
CHRISTMAS O TREE
Editorial Director Lauren Barisic Photographer Madison WeberChristmas Tree Lane in Fresno is a century-old Central Valley tradition. During the month of December, North Van Ness Boulevard in the Old Fig Garden neighborhood is transformed by holiday cheer. The nearly 2-mile stretch is converted into a one-way lane lined with approximately 300 deodar cedars. Each tree is draped in glimmering lights, and the houses along the street are all decked out. But what makes this holiday institution so enchanting is the enduring spirit of Christmas that has been upheld for generations.
It all began with a single tree. In 1920, one tree was decorated in front of a home located at Pontiac Way and Van Ness to honor a child who had died there. Each year, more and more neighbors joined in the tradition of decorating the deodars that line the street, and Christmas Tree Lane was born. Since its inception, there have been two years where the Lane went dark. Due to wartime restrictions, there were no lights in 1941. During the 1973 energy crisis, the Lane was once again left unlit to conserve energy. Thus, 2022 marks 100 years of holiday lights for Christmas Tree Lane.
Today, Christmas Tree Lane runs from Shields to Shaw Avenues, but it wasn’t always that way. It was previously only in the county island that encompasses much of Old Fig, “Which was pretty much starting from the Herndon Canal going northward,” explains Dean Alexander, Chairman of Christmas Tree Lane. In the 1990s, Terry Cole, past Chairman of Christmas Tree Lane, suggested expanding the Lane into the city, starting at Shields and going under the railroad tracks. Since then, carloads of visitors have formed a line along Shields, though the carline often wraps around from Blackstone Avenue to the east.
Orchestrating the world’s longest Christmas street is a team effort that pulls from a handful of sources. “It’s sponsor-run by the Fig Garden Homeowners Association,” Dean explains. “They put on the event, and they have the Christmas Tree Lane Committee underneath them,” which handles all of the organization and footwork required to get the Lane running. “Law enforcement plays a big part in traffic control.” The Fresno Police Department, Fresno County Sheriff, and California Highway Patrol provide the essential service of keeping traffic moving safely and smoothly.
Preparations begin in September. “It takes about 3 months to put it up,” Dean clarifies, and another 1.5 to 2 months to take everything down. Electrician Shawn Caglia is in charge of the lighting. “We have eight electric panels to turn the lights on … Then the homeowners do their own decorations, and they start pretty much after Halloween.” Dean’s home is the grand finale at the end of the Lane, which includes approximately 300,000 lights. For him alone, “It takes me seven weekends to get my decorations in place.” For nearly 20 years, local high schools have been asked to decorate 4’ × 8’ panels with holiday displays, which now fill the “dark spaces” of the Lane.
The sound of holiday spirit rings along Christmas Tree Lane, too. “We’re able to get a low frequency radio channel that is actually done by Fig Garden Police Protection District,” reveals Dean. “They allow us to use that during Christmas to display Christmas music and 92.5 is the FM
radio channel.” So, tune in on your dash radio to synchronize with the music being broadcasted from speakers along the Lane.
Christmas Tree Lane is not-for-profit whatsoever. Dean states, “It’s strictly done by donations—having this money from donations to do it the following year.” Around four donation booths are set up along the Lane on Walk-Only Nights. But for every other night, one donation booth is located at the north end just before Rialto Avenue—cars may make voluntary donations as they drive through. “Any money helps to put it on for the following year,” says Dean.
The single greatest Lane expenditure is the labor of hiring an electrician to maintain and install the lights. Because of normal wear and tear, some lights and wiring have to be replaced or redone annually. “PG&E power is up there, but it’s only a fraction of the cost.” Residents aren’t repaid for their own display expenses. “We provide cones, barricades, and anything that the police department needs for traffic control. It’s just very expensive to actually put this event on,” discloses Dean. “It’s typically around $100,000.”
Christmas Tree Lane has garnered much national attention in recent years. In 2007, the Lane was featured in Sunset magazine. In 2010, Dean Alexander and his family appeared on TLC’s holiday show Invasion of the Christmas Lights. Just four years later, the Alexander family won The Great Christmas Light Fight on ABC—their $50,000 prize was donated to help keep Christmas Tree Lane shining bright.
As large as the Lane has become, its organizers vehemently work to keep it non-commercial because “It’s what Christmas is supposed to be. We try to keep it free of commercialism,” Dean proudly asserts. “We try to keep the vendors off the Lane. We really wanted people to go down and enjoy a homegrown, local event and not be commercialized.” Families come from not only Fresno, but from all over the Valley to see Christmas Tree Lane. “It’s grown to its capacity, to tell you the truth,” Dean admits.
Christmas Tree Lane dons 2,500,000 lights in front of 140 houses and attracts over 342,600 visitors annually. Each night, Lane Keepers are responsible for turning the lights on and off. Organized by Lauri Leone, Christmas Tree Lane’s Lane Keeper Coordinator, this select group are usually neighborhood homeowners who also ensure that the scheduled donation booth volunteers show up every night. That’s the human aspect that no technology can replace. “We try to keep it updated as much as possible, but it’s still gonna be people driving down the Lane enjoying the spirit of Christmas—that’s what we want to keep.”
Usually, Christmas Tree Lane kicks off with one of two Walk-Only Nights with 30,000 to 40,000 visitors present, but they have been paused since 2020 until CDC recommendations allow them to resume. “As soon as they lift those requirements, and hopefully COVID will go away by the end of next year, we will have it,” Dean optimistically says. Until then, visitors can still walk down the Lane while cars pass by. For more information, check out www.christmastreelane.com, and be sure to visit Christmas Tree Lane before the lights are turned off for the season this Christmas Day.

THE MATHER METHOD
LAURA MATHER, BROKER ASSOCIATE FRESNO, CALIFORNIAhe Mather Method takes the song and dance out of your home sale—whether you are selling or buying—and replaces it with something much more reliable: the art of marketing, versus just selling, and the science to back it up. My story could be much like your own. No entitlements, I have worked my way from entry-level property manager to a national Vice President of Sales and Marketing, to where I am now as one of Fresno’s top producers.

CAREER-DEFINING MOMENT
The most memorable defining moment in my career, by far, was during our company's IPO (UCP, Inc.), where we rang the opening bell at the NYSE. Adding to that moment, being the only female on the podium. Now that I have transitioned from corporate America to being self-employed, the defining moments happen every time a family gets the keys to their new home.
WHO MENTORED ME IN MY CAREER
TI was extremely fortunate to have had amazing mentors throughout my career. Two individuals invested in my success above all others. Sandra Wilson, Co-Owner of SAN MAR Properties, was an incredible female role model to me. She taught me how to manage people and processes with diligence and compassion. Rich Wathen, Principle of Wathen-Castanos, was also very influential. Learning the home building industry from one of Fresno's most respected professionals was one of the greatest blessings I could have received.

Glitter is better when it comes to holiday décor. When Keynan Ammons, owner of Ammons Design & Home Décor, was charged with transforming this Lake Van Ness home in Fresno, he envisioned neutral golds and greens anchoring a space filled with subtle yet sophisticated glitz. “Typically when I’m decorating, I try to make a concerted effort to make everything very deliberate—it doesn’t feel like a brick just sitting there. It needs to feel like it’s flowing and be very organic and natural,” imparts the designer. “Not feeling so made, but like it’s custom designed just for your home.” The result here is a festive decoration that harmoniously interacts with the home’s interior design.
The tree sets the tone for the space and stems from the client’s values. “She’s religious, and so that’s why we included the cherubs, the angels,” Keynan explains. “We wanted something that would tie in her faith with Christmas while also blending into her neutral environment with the color scheme.” Draped in cascading, golden-beige metallic ribbons, the evergreen centerpiece seamlessly coordinates with the home’s existing style. The addition of shimmering laurels, globe ornaments, and faux poinsettias becomes radiant amidst its twinkling lights.
Atop the fireplace mantel, a custom garland serves as the foundation for abundant adornments. “We included eucalyptus to soften it up just a little bit because we wanted it to feel slightly different than what you would traditionally see in a garland,” elaborates Keynan. “We wanted it to feel bright and airy.” Ecru, cream, and white ribbons, florals, and baubles perfectly complement the hearth’s snowy tone, whose elegant curves allow the overflow of boughs to feel sultrily juxtaposed.
Behind the fireplace, built-in taupe shelving showcases a collection of cheerful figurines amidst the client’s glass and crystal decanters and bowls. “Typically, we always start with the client’s existing inventory, and the reason why we do that is because our clients really do know what they love,” making it easy to follow their taste and perfect the space’s fine details. Each shelf acts as a sort of diorama. When viewed collectively, a sweeping holiday scene unfolds, leaving the eye bouncing around from one festive scene to the next.
Across a sofa table, finials composed alongside bottlebrush trees create the illusion of a sparkling timberline behind the couch. “I thought they were a nice touch. They were the right color,” Keynan says. “A lot of times people don’t really use finials, but they are just great for filling spaces and not feeling like it’s heavy.” The repeated shape of these finishing decorative pieces with the trees makes for an eye-catching display. Wire-string lights around what would be tree trunks feel like fresh snowfall on the tabletop.
Gold and glitter holiday décor effortlessly fit in with the addition of angels around the space. There are a couple fastened to the tree. “The angels in the trees were hers, and so that was kind of the focal point for the tree,” Keynan adds. He brought in a pair of trumpeting versions with glistening wings to grace the dining table, where another custom centerpiece that echoes the mantel garland lays. Another angel keeps watch from a decorative accent shelf, where she is perched next to a pearl-encrusted tree.
Preparing holiday décor isn’t a seasonal job when you’re an interior designer. “A lot of our inventory we purchase in January at the Vegas Market, and so there’s a lot of planning that’s involved with our Christmas orders,” divulges Keynan. For example, “In January of 2023, I have to know what’s trending at Christmas in 2023.” But you don’t have to begin with a clean slate annually. “What you already have is probably a great base, and you don’t have to start over every year,” Keynan is keen to point out. Having a personal inventory established is actually a great way to evolve with the years, so don’t be afraid to edit what you’ve got or ask for input from a local professional this holiday season!
EVER GREEN
Few decorations are as quintessential as evergreens during the holiday season. They’re not only a staple trimming but also a trademark scent this time of year. With the knowledge of where to find the freshest conifers and non-traditional branches, how to best care for their longevity, and the most creative ways to display them, you can confidently bring the outdoors in!
Interiors Editor Erin MelkonianWhere to Find
You can find an abundance of garlands and swags at your local Christmas tree farm. However, they are usually quite expensive. Online retailers, such as Lynch Creek Farm, conveniently deliver fresh cuts of garland directly to your door. Another great source for affordable holiday greenery is your local farmers’ market.

Foliage Care
Start with the newest cuts. The freshness of the foliage can be determined by smell and touch. Select greens with a heavy aroma and sticky quality, not those that are brittle and scentless. Once you have your arrangements in place, spritz them with anti-desiccant spray—it helps preserve live greenery by locking in the moisture.
Favorite Varieties
Blue Spruce
Good for outdoors. The cool blue hue is to die for, but their needles can be sharp. Mostly available in the Midwest and Northeast.
Olive
These dainty leaves curl as they dry and create interesting textures. Note that they do dry out relatively fast.
Juniper
They have a sweet scent, rich greenery, and bright blue berries and tend to be prickly. Best used on staircases and wreaths.
Cedar
The branches are full of natural oil, which preserves them for a long time indoors and makes them great for draping.
Magnolia
Their brown and gold leaves bring in gorgeous earthy tones. Extremely hardy and can last up to four years. Best used on mantels, staircases, or tabletop arrangements.
Long Needle Pine
Long-lasting with a gorgeous light-green hue. A little goes a long way. An easy pick for traditional yet showstopping quality.
How to Use
If you’re in need of a little inspiration, try these four ways to add a little green to your holiday home décor. Centerpieces, gallery walls, staircases, and fireplaces serve as the backdrop for much of your seasonal festivities, and are a surefire way to be sure your evergreens are seen. Experiment with the most impactful places to sprinkle fresh foliage in every room.

Let your greens steal the show! With the right centerpieces, your table will always be ready to go in the event of an impromptu holiday gathering. Adapt your layout depending on how much greenery you have. Lay branches directly on the table or prop them up in bud vases. Sprinkle in votive candles. No water needed!
2Gallery Wall
Source Accent Décor
Go unconventional and add a variety of wreaths and sprigs to any wall to give it a completely unique feel. Adding festive ribbon to the mix will incorporate a fun dash of elegance. If you want to take your décor to the next level, use your existing accessories and wall adornments and include them in the arrangement.

Draping garland over the mantle or hanging a wreath above the fireplace are great ways to use fresh cuts. You can even try something different by adorning your mantle with fresh, upright sprigs. Give each its own vase, and without much effort, you will have created a noninvasive, elegant, minimalist focal point.
