very issue of CVLUX brings something new and exciting, and this one is no exception. I am especially proud of this edition for a myriad of reasons. Let’s begin with the business end of the company. This January we are rolling out over 135 new newsstand locations throughout California, servicing Southern California, the Central Valley and select Central Coast locations. This is due to the overwhelming support of our advertisers and readers, and I am so proud of everyone who has helped grow the publication to the place we are now. This issue highlights our second annual Luxury Awards. We have worked hard to change up the format for this year’s event, making it one you won’t want to miss. There will be a dinner on January 22, 2016 at TorNino’s Banquets in Fresno, California. Tickets are almost sold out, so if you haven’t reserved your seat for this year’s event, be sure to do so quickly, since space is limited. A portion of this year’s proceeds will be donated to the Marjaree Mason Center, a local organization that is near and dear to my heart. The 2015 winners are profiled on page 30, so be sure to check out all the businesses and community members who are helping better the Central Valley and the surrounding areas. For more information regarding this year’s event please visit www.cvlux.com.

Also found in this edition is a fabulous home feature. The Serimian Family graciously invited us into their residence, which overlooks the San Joaquin River bluffs. This spectacular estate is clad in marble and full of treasures from all over the world. It’s a show-stopping home, to say the least. You can read more about the home and the family in the profile on page 48. This edition’s cover girl is the multi-talented Elisabeth Röhm. Elisabeth can be seen in the new movie Joy, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper. Elisabeth shines in the spread, featuring one of my favorite designers, Halston. Ms. Röhm is simply a delight and we are so fortunate to have this veteran actress grace our New Year cover. To learn more about Elisabeth and her career, please see the feature on page 70. If you are looking for something special to do this Valentine’s Day, check out the article from Lifestyle Editor, Pandora Vanderpump Sabo. She walks you through tips, tricks and recipes to help make this year’s romantic rendezvous one for the record books. If you are looking to do something a little more unexpected, we have fantastic travel locales profiled by Travel Editor, Reagan Lowery. The Palatine
A
s you drive down Freeway 41, you might wonder, “What’s in that building?” Most think The Palatine Building is filled with doctors’ and accountants’ offices. In 2004 the majestic and ornate structure residing on North Fresno Street opened its doors to local specialty professionals and a few prestigious boutiques. The name, Palatine, originates from a hill in Rome where emperors used to build their homes. Later it was discovered that the name could also be traced back to the Armenian roots of the Arzrouni, Jelladian & Gage families who own and manage it, ironically making the name more poignant. Designed, engineered and built by the family architect and contractors, the building is constructed of nothing but the finest materials, including copper roof embellishments, solid mahogany doors and exquisite slate and marble interiors. The structure itself is one-of-a-kind and worthy of a visit, even for pure visual enjoyment.
Building
THE HIDDEN JEWEL OF THE CENTRAL VALLEY
Left to Right: Gina Jelladian, Stephanie Jelladian Bedrosian, Sonya Jelladian-Gage and Mary Papaleo. As the years passed, the iconic building has evolved into the Central Valley’s only Metropolitan Boutique shopping destination. Mainstay original tenants include Slates Restaurant, family-owned Jewels Unlimited, and RSVP Style. All of these companies have undergone evolutionary changes as well. Slates Restaurant has replaced its renowned nightly fine dining with Plates by Slates, a casual and contemporary lunch cafe, available to enjoy while you shop at the Palatine. The original Slates experience is still available in their second floor dining rooms, but by reservation and private event only. Family-owned for over 40 years, Jewels Unlimited has been generationally passed and grown into Gianni Fine Jewelers. Gianni boasts the finest jewelry collections from renowned designers spanning the world, and is the true jewel living inside of this remarkable location. RSVP began as a small invitation and gift boutique. After developing its place in the wedding industry as a fine stationer, their gift collections have continually grown over the last 12 years. In addition to fabulous gifts of stationery, candles and designer frames, they have expanded their product mix into bridal and gift registry, featuring collections of both casual and formal dinnerware, selections of serving pieces, decorative pieces for the home and accent furniture decor. From Versace to Michael Aram, with stunning pieces from around the world, their exclusive collections are dazzling. In 2010, RSVP Style expanded with Mary C. Papaleo joining the management, expanding into floral and events. Stems at the Palatine Floral and Event Studio sprouted. Offering the Valley’s premiere fresh floral services, Stems delivers six days a week. With over 28 years of full event design and coordination, Stems will make every celebration memorable and fabulous. Teaming up with RSVP’s design team, Stems will create phenomenal interior botanical designs to decorate all areas in your home or office. Together, these two stores will make your world beautiful.
The upper levels of the Palatine host two specialty physicians, Dr. Denard Fobbs, of Lifepoint Institute for Women, and Dr. Aaron Draper, expert in NeuroSoma therapy. Alchemy Spa is located on Level Two, as well. Walk into Fresno’s elite and pristine spa, relax in style and come out looking like a star. Level Three is home to Alchemy Salon, mother studio to Alchemy Spa. The Valley’s top stylists will dress your tresses while you sip spa water or tea, enjoying a view of the cityscape. Alchemy offers the best of the best in hair care and body products. Browse in their mirrored showroom while you await your transformation. Also housed on Level Three is Be’Ani Alterations. This team specializes in alterations and custom dress design. For formal wear and special occasion needs, they will work their magic to have you outfitted perfectly. The Palatine is a designer building that houses true designers. Companies predominantly owned and run by women, each strives to create a unique and luxurious atmosphere for all to indulge in. Whether you need to pop in to grab a quick gift, enjoy a glass of fine wine or find the perfect engagement ring, we are at your complete service. Words that often echo through the lobby are, “I never knew all of this was in here!” Now you know what is in “that building.” Herein lies the foundation for true California convenience and lifestyle. Standing in the foreground amidst the majestic Sierra Nevada’s, this iconic building invites you and your curiosity to be enchanted and fulfilled.

To me, a new year means fresh entertaining ideas and a variety of new opportunities to surprise and delight your significant other. From cozy January nights in front of the fire, to Valentine’s Day dinner by candlelight, to fresh blooms in Spring, the start of a new year just resonates romance. Here are some of my favorite ways to bring a little bit of romance into your entertaining, no matter your style! I joined forces with two of my favorite Los Angeles-based companies to bring you some of my favorite romantic entertaining looks. Working with my go-to intimate event-planners, A Merry Riot, we styled these looks with items from dÊcor company, Haven & Co, in Brentwood. All items are available for purchase at Haven & Co, 11965 San Vicente Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90049 with prices listed. To find out more about A Merry Riot visit www.AMerryRiot.com
French Country Chic Oozing with rustic femininity, this décor reminds me of days spent sipping cocktails under the olive trees in Provence. Delightfully-feminine without being overly-girly, this is an easy way to add some romantic touches to your décor. Try not to go too saccharine with your food and drink, but instead, keep them guessing with a classic or somewhat chunky cocktail. A traditional gin martini is the perfect way to keep this feminine display grounded and modern. All items pictured available at Haven & Co: Voluspa silver candle $73, Deborah Rhodes gold placemat $25, Alpaca Import Cashmere throw $320, Zodax gold tray $145, William Yeoward decanters $250 - $295, Nest candle $43, Caskata tray $74, Caskata bowl $49.50, William Yeoward cocktail coupe $52, Graphic Image taupe shaker $145, Lafco pink candle $62, Asian cocktail book $16.95. The Perfect Gin Martini I like to play around with my martini garnishes—try bright green Castelvetrano olives instead of the classic martini olives. You can also substitute the gin for vodka if you’re more of a James Bond martini drinker! Ingredients 3 oz gin ½ oz dry vermouth Olives or lemon twist Ice Preparation 1. Chill a martini glass in the freezer. 2. Pour the vermouth into the glass, swirl it around and then pour it out. 3. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. 4. Add in the gin. 5. Shake vigorously (for at least 30 seconds) if you prefer a frothy martini, or stir 50 times if you like it crystal clear! 6. Strain into the martini glass and garnish with olives or a lemon twist.

Old World Charm Evocative of classic British elegance and peppered with chunky masculine pieces, I love this look for a night in with cocktails, a roast dinner and old movies. Don’t be afraid to blend the masculine and feminine in this look— soft, decadent florals will only serve to highlight your stronger elements, resulting in visuals that are bold, rich and dramatically-romantic. All items pictured available at Haven & Co: Import Wooden Tray $47, Mela Knife $45, Mela bottle opener $45, Barclay Buttera tray $190, Caspari coaster $16, Ralph Lauren rocks glass $95 for 2, William Yeoward Flute $69, Ralph Lauren decanter $195, Barclay Buttera leather decanter $125, Silver shaker $395, Claudia Nicole cashmere throw $250, Kim Seybert napkin $30. Separate your egg yolks and whites, making sure to get no yolks mixed in with the whites. Add your egg whites to a stand mixer with a whisk attachment and immediately put on the highest speed. Whisk for 3 or 4 minutes until the egg whites begin to form soft peaks. Keep on a high speed and add in the sugar a little bit at a time. This should take another few minutes. Your meringue should be a very thick, fluffy meringue. Meanwhile, add half of your cream to a saucepan over high heat. The second the cream begins to simmer, turn the heat off. Keep the hot cream on the stove without heat, and add in the chocolate. Stir until the chocolate has completely melted. Stir the espresso powder into the chocolate cream until it dissolves. Fill a large bowl with iced water, and set a smaller bowl over it. Pour the hot chocolate cream into the small bowl over the iced water, so that it begins to cool. Mix the rest of the cream, and the Bailey’s, into the cooling chocolate cream. Carefully lightly-whip the chocolate mixture until it cools completely. Once cool, carefully pour half of the chocolate mixture into the meringue, whipping both together on a medium speed. Add the rest of the chocolate, reserving some if the meringue starts to get too creamy. Spoon mousse into your serving bowls/coffee cups/martini glasses. Refrigerate for 10 minutes. Top with whipped cream and espresso beans and garnish with a strawberry. Enjoy!

Dressing Up Your Desserts Desserts are one thing that don’t need to take too much time and effort—it’s very easy to make a store-bought dessert look sexy. Simply buy a cake or pie from a bakery, take it home and dress it up! Here are some ideas to get you started. Fruit & Berries Fruit is the easiest way to dress up a store-bought dessert. Raspberries, cherries, sliced peaches, blackberries, strawberries, you name it—pile it up on top of or around the cake, and it will look more decadent already. Pomegranate seeds are a fabulous addition, and they lend a nice fresh crunch to the dessert, too! A Bit of Green Everything looks better with a bit of green! Keep the leaves on the strawberries, add a sprig of mint, or place your dessert on top of a bed of lemon leaves for the perfect pop of brightness! Roses & Flowers Roses make everything better. Wash a few stems and press them gently into the sides of your cake or around the platter. Instantly more elegant and beautiful! Powdered Sugar A dusting of powdered (confectioner’s) sugar can instantly elevate your desserts. Place a bit of the sugar in a sieve and lightly dust over the entire cake. Don’t neglect the fruit and roses—they look beautiful iced, too!

t’s not often that you run across someone like Hannah Serimian, a meticulous hostess, entrepreneur and doting wife and mother. She seamlessly balances all her responsibilities with ease and poise in an effortless way that is simply captivating. The Serimian home is a reflection of its owners, and every corner is finished to perfection. The day I was invited to the residence I was greeted with such warmth and hospitality, it was almost as though I had been invited over for a casual coffee session with one of my girlfriends. In true hostess fashion there was a variety of coffee and pastries to choose from. The first thing you notice when entering the home is that there isn’t a bad angle or view anywhere. Everything is clean and simplistic, with splashes of texture and warmth found in cherished family antiques and items collected from various trips and designers. Exquisite doesn’t even begin to describe this luxurious home perched high atop the bluffs in Fresno, California. Hannah and her loving husband, Marlon, an attorney and investor, took several years to personally design their home. Every detail was thought out prior to completion of this magnificent estate. The couple did everything together from furniture design, paint colors to lighting. “I had everything in storage prior to completion,” Hannah recounted, as she gave me a tour of this 7,000 square foot abode. “It took six years to design the home and two and a half years to build.” The home includes four bedrooms, six bathrooms, office, library, home gym and, yes, even a private elevator. The view is vast, overlooking the San Joaquin River and Sierra Nevada Mountains. What I was most struck by is that although the home is large, it feels cozy and inviting. Nothing about the spaces is over the top or overdone. It’s a calm home and the Serimian Family prefer it that way. Hannah gave me a tour of her children’s rooms and she beamed from ear-to-ear as she chatted with me about them. She was prepping for her daughter Chloe’s birthday party that morning. Marlon and Hannah have three beautiful children: Emily, who is 19, William, 10, and Chloe (aka “CoCo”), who just turned 8. I asked Hannah where the family spends most of their time and she replied, “The kitchen, of course!”

Hannah and her husband, Marlon, love to cook and bake, and she described recently making small, homemade pumpkin pies (after roasting the pumpkins herself) that her husband and children helped assemble. They created 30 of these delicious, decadent desserts to take to the school her children attend. The kitchen is enormous. There are a plethora of cabinets and miles of countertop, which features a unique Italian Cla’acatta. Each slab, including the bathroom slabs, was hand-selected by the couple, and crafted of marble milled from Italy and Asia. All the hardware in the space, including the pendants over the island, are refurbished antiques to beautifully-mix a touch of the past with the modern. Many items in the home have an Art Deco influence. “I love the clean lines of Art Deco design,” Hannah explained. “There is something very structured about it that I just adore.” Structured design is in Hannah’s genes. Her family used to design furniture, which helped inspire her business, Boxy Girl. Boxy is unlike any product currently on the market. Primarily used on a vanity, Boxy helps organize all your brushes, make-up, and odds and ends, making the day run a little smoother. Its clear Lucite design and custom stackable molds makes the Boxy Girl an enviable product. “I even used the Art Deco influence when designing the packaging for our product,” she explained. Hannah spent several years collecting artifacts, design elements and fixtures for their home. The attention to detail is what really sets her home apart from everyone else’s. There is no traditional molding in any space, which makes the art and antiquities pop against the fresh backdrop. Columns and doors throughout the house were purchased in Santa Fe, New Mexico, at Seret and Sons Interior and Architectural Décor Showroom. If the home’s columns had to be cut down in size to fit an area, the excess was used as a playful end table, which inevitably turns into a conversation piece. The ages of the doors and columns date back hundreds of years and are one-of-a-kind imports from the Middle East and Asia. All of the light fixtures in the home are custom selections from various eras, including authentic Art Deco lights from the Tennessee Opera House, which are hung in the marble-lined Master Bathroom. Every detail of the Serimian home was thoughtfully and purposely constructed to be an artfully-inviting and visceral experience. “The home is designed on an x-axis,” Hannah explained. The wide hallways connect with the main corridor, which acts as the spine of the home, providing many vistas and viewpoints that give different experiences in every area of the residence. In short, there isn’t a bad angle to be found anywhere. The furnishing and décor was inspired by modern design. The clean lines, when mixed with rich, organic textures, such as a wide variety of metal, stone and wood, gives the space an eclectic, sophisticated feel. Antiques from both Hannah and Marlon’s grandparents and great-grandparents add a touch of personal family history. In addition to the furnishings, the Serimian’s have filled their home with commissioned art from local artists such as Chance James, Andrew Milne and Paul Parichan. Over my career I have toured many homes, and I must say that this is perhaps the most sophisticated, thoughtful and unique residence I have ever seen in the Central Valley. There is something about the home and the family which truly separates them from their surrounding neighbors. To see additional images of the Serimian home please visit www.cvlux.com.

FITNESS IN THE NEW YEAR
5 Secrets to Success from Celebrity Trainer Mark Harari
So here we are. A new year begins. Of course, that means a “new” resolution to get in shape. Again. I’d like to offer a suggestion … and a solution. Let’s resolve to STAY in shape this year. That means—yes—you are going to have to work hard and make positive food choices. It also means that you are going to have to stay committed to your choices and your goals. In other words, this year is going to be a positive lifestyle change. 5 Ways to Jump-Start and Maintain a Strong, Healthy Body in 2016 1. Ditch the Leftovers HAPPY NEW YEAR! Party like it’s 1999, and then accept it’s 2016 and you don’t have the same metabolism as you did 16 years ago. The average American consumes 4,500 calories on Thanksgiving Day, and another 3,000 on Christmas. Let’s not even talk about the empty calories you drank on New Year’s Eve. You did it. It’s over. Let’s move forward. Don’t let the holiday goodies linger around the kitchen and haunt you. 2. Start Moving Get back into the rhythm of what you enjoy doing. But this year, let’s take it up a notch. Your body looks the way it does today because of what you have been doing. If you want to see something different, then do something different. The key to “change” is “challenge,” and I have a challenge for you: if you have access to a treadmill, download my PulseTread™ app for iPhone/iPad. Each day you will receive a brand new, 30-minute cardio workout. If the elliptical or bike is more your style, you can adapt the workouts for those, as well. If you are not a “workout person,” find a partner who is, who will keep you accountable for the first month of this year. Make that commitment to them and, most importantly, to yourself. If you can’t find a partner, use the PulseTread™ app. I won’t give up on you!

3. Plan Meals
4. There is No “Cheat”
Here is where you win or lose. Proper food choices are absolutely essential to your success this year, so let’s plan ahead and choose the right ones.
I’m not a fan of the term “cheat meal,” and I’ll tell you why. The word “cheat” is negative. If you are going to feel like you cheated, then you just shouldn’t eat it at all. Now that does not mean you can’t indulge once in a while. In fact, I encourage you to do that occasionally. But do it because you’ve earned it, and enjoy it! It’s not a punishable offense, so please don’t run three extra miles or do 200 extra crunches the next day. Make it a positive experience, and then get back on track.
Meal planning is only as miserable as you make it. Quite honestly, I love it, and it actually saves me valuable time during the week. Don’t try to plan every meal for each day of the week in advance. You’ll drive yourself crazy, and you’ll be bored with the meal before you even eat it. Rather, have an idea of the different foods you like (lean proteins, vegetables, fruits and complex carbohydrates) and try to have them available to mix and match during the week. The one meal each day that I pre-make is breakfast. If you do not normally eat breakfast, please do. It will change your life for the better. Think of the word itself, “break…fast.” Your body has been fasting since you finished dinner the night before. When you get in the habit of breaking the fast with something healthy and protein-rich (20-25g of protein) each morning, your body will learn to burn calories and repair muscles more efficiently while you sleep. If you just can’t make yourself eat in the mornings, make a protein shake. My personal recommendation is the Shake from IDLife (www. Pulse.IDLife.com). It’s all-natural, non-GMO, gluten-free, soy-free … it’s the cleanest protein supplement I have found. “Mark, do I have to give up my glass of wine with dinner each night?” No. You don’t HAVE to do anything. This is where it comes down to, “How badly do you want it?” Alcohol is purely empty calories for your body. To make matters worse, alcohol lowers your inhibitions, making it tougher to say “no” to the leftover pie and brownies that I already told you to throw away! Be smart. You know alcohol is not a positive food choice. You decide how important it is to you.

5. Celebrate Achieving Your Goals We have a long year ahead, which allows for a lot of time to make changes. Be realistic when setting your goals. Instead of beginning the year with the daunting task of, “I need to lose 25 pounds this year,” get your head set for five pounds by March. Or better yet, make your goal something not related to the number on the scale. Allow yourself the opportunity to succeed, and when you do, take a moment to be proud of yourself and celebrate your achievement. That does not mean you should go out and derail all of the hard work you have done! In fact, I would advise making your “reward” something that is not food-related. After your celebration, set your next goal, and get to work. Remember, small changes add up to huge results. Once you commit to a new routine, you’ll feel accomplished, stronger and more energetic. You deserve to live a great life, and only you can make that happen.

APPS FOR THE NEW YEAR Contributor: Logan Guntzelman
We could say that you should unplug in 2016. Take time to be a part of what’s around you. Appreciate the here and now. But then we’d sound like every other New Year’s magazine issue. Here at CVLUX, we like to be honest; you’re busy, your phone is your lifeline and if it was glued to your hand you probably wouldn’t notice for a day or two. Why not make your addiction work for you by downloading one (or all) of these seven apps in the New Year? We promise they will be more rewarding than stalking your high school crush on Facebook. 1. BriefMe
2. sleepyti.me With a thousand things to do, we know that sleep often falls by the wayside. Sleep smarter with sleepyti.me, an alarm clock that wakes you up between sleep cycles, ensuring that your morning starts a little easier. Sure, there are a lot of apps that try to outsmart fatigue, but this one is so focused on the user experience that you can even contact the creator of the app directly on Facebook or Twitter. Imagine if you had a problem with your iCal, and you could shoot a message off to Steve Wozniak. If this app takes off, maybe Apple will take a leaf out of sleepyti.me’s book.
Staying informed is both imperative and increasingly impossible, thanks to social media updating the news every millisecond. Touting itself as “just the cream” of current events reporting, BriefMe’s Briefing Page gives you the top ten most shared news stories at that very moment. Whether you’re checking it last minute before a big work presentation, a dinner party, or a PTA meeting, BriefMe promises that you will walk into the room in-the-know.
3. Sworkit Okay, here’s the part of the article where we sound like every other magazine. New year. New you. But instead of joining a gym you’ll never visit, or starting a juice cleanse that’ll make you cranky, download Sworkit instead. Sworkit offers pre-built and custom workouts that require absolutely NO equipment. Better yet, YOU get to set the time limit for your workouts, so it totally fits into your schedule. Plus, every workout comes with an instructional video, so even workout newbies can easily follow along. If you’re not sold yet, here’s the kicker: Sworkit even has a kids’ app, filled with games and activities that’ll get your little ones moving. An app that gets the little ones tuckered out and more agreeable at bedtime? We’re sold.

4. Headspace Just because you’re on your phone all the time doesn’t mean you can’t do a little soul-searching while you’re there. Introducing Headspace, a meditation app that’s so approachable even the mindfulness-averse might want to take a shot at it. Hailed as “the gym membership for your mind,” Headspace has hours of exercises that you can tune to your personal tastes and lifestyle. You can pick exercises that match your current mood and you can even customize the length of an exercise, because Headspace is all about a meditation journey that’s right for you. Plus, you get to keep track of your own progress and your friend’s, with rewards for reaching meditation milestones. Nothing like a little friendly competition to keep your journey to Zen interesting. 5. Clue Smartphones help you keep track of your sleep, your workouts, and the foods you eat, so why not get a little tech-y with your period? Clue period tracker allows you to map out your monthly cycle, highlighting the days you are more likely to get pregnant or PMS. You can even log how your moods change throughout the month, so you can finally figure out if Aunt Flow’s visit affects your temper. 6. Roadtrippers Apps are great when they help your daily routine, but even better if they enhance a family vacation. Enter Roadtrippers, a way to plan a driving trip of any length. Map your route and Roadtrippers helps you book hotels along the way. This savvy app even gives suggestions for fun, off-the-beaten-path destinations to visit while you get from point A to point B. To top it off, Roadtrippers estimates the cost of gas so you know exactly how much you’re spending on your route.
7. Scoops This list wouldn’t be complete without an app for the kids, but you might be surprised at how much you love Scoops, too. Stack as many ice cream scoops as you can, and try and get the same flavors on top of each other for added points. The catch? It gets harder to do, the taller the stack gets. If you liked Candy Crush, why not try something else that’s sweet?

Digital Age
There was a time when a woman only had one option in terms of beauty. She would find a magazine clipping she liked, take it with her to her local beauty parlor and hope that the local stylist could accurately recreate the chosen look. The number of talented stylists was limited, so results varied dramatically with this method. In this environment, Hollywood stars and Madison Avenue executives became the shapers of trends in beauty and style for generations. Whether it was the beehive hairdo and brightly colored dresses of the 50’s, the mod styles of the 60’s, or Farah Faucet with her golden locks and red bathing suit in the 70’s, film, television and magazines have been setting the trends and shaping the face of beauty for most of the last century. However, the digital age is here, and the revolution will not be televised; the development of the internet and the proliferation of cell phones have put the power of beauty and the ability to shape trends into the hands of regular people, all over the world. Tech companies like Instagram, YouTube and Snapchat have become the great equalizer in terms of accessibility. They allow a generation of people who have grown up in a digital world to show off their style and fashion sense, while sharing ideas and techniques with their peers. No longer are celebrities the only icons out there, the internet is creating its own breed of home-grown style icons and beauty gurus. Today there are thousands of people who call themselves vloggers or bloggers (depending on their medium of choice), creating free content and posting it on the internet. Whether
you’re looking for step-by-step tutorials of different beauty techniques, product reviews, or you just want to see people who show off what they’re wearing on any given day, there’s very likely a site, blog or video for you. Google and YouTube allow today’s beauty consumer to find just about any content they can imagine. YouTube has become one of the internet’s go-to sites to find out what is, and what is not, considered a beauty trend today. In fact, the Think with Google Conference stated that beauty on YouTube is growing at a rate of 50% year over year, and content regarding beauty has generated over 45.3 billion views. YouTube beauty gurus are more and more influencing standards of beauty when it comes to products and techniques. There are even companies that specialize in bringing these content creators together. Platforms such as Vidcon or Beautycon are creating even larger communities. Beautycon’s mission is to bring fans, brands and creators together in one place while discussing, trending news, fashion, and beauty. Moj Mahdara, CEO of Beautycon Media, states, “Beautycon is a platform for content creators and the fans that love them. We give a voice to an underserved generation of 84 million kids that live in an entirely digital world. So many companies focus on marketing to this generation—we’re focused on creating a community for them where they feel comfortable [embracing] their eccentricities and be true to who they are.” Not only has the internet made information more accessible, it’s also made getting beauty services easier than it’s ever been. Call it the on-demand economy or the “uberization” of beauty, but now you don’t even need to leave your home or office to get your hair or nails done. With the touch of a button you can order professional beauty services, anytime and anyplace. There are currently ten major on-demand service apps functioning in the U.S. allowing beauty professionals to be their own boss and command their own hours. Companies like Priv, Glamsquad and Vensette, just to name a few, offer instant gratification and convenience to today’s busy consumer.

While discussing the changes taking place in the beauty industry, Joico Colorist, Denis DeSouza, of Andy Lecompte salon in Los Angeles had an interesting take: “Change is necessary in the beauty world with the advancements of technology. It is a part of the evolution of easy access, but the beauty parlors will always be there, unless computers start cutting and coloring people’s hair.” Beauty is a multi-billion dollar industry because it serves a basic human desire to express and feel good about oneself. From the beginning of time, humans have tried to express themselves by changing their outward appearance. So while technological changes have shifted the manner in which we consume beauty products and services, it has not mitigated our desire for those goods and services. Rather, it has increased our access and awareness to types of goods and services we otherwise might have never known about, while simultaneously giving us a portal through which we can better express ourselves to a wider audience than ever before. This may cause challenges for the marketers of beauty products, since where there once was a simple formula, there is now a seemingly ever-changing landscape in which they are forced to be more creative and find new partnerships. However, challenge also comes with new opportunity, as it offers these companies the ability to interact directly with their customers in ways they never could have before. So while icons and trends will inevitably continue to change and evolve as technology and information advance, so will the way we consume beauty good and services. What will not change is our desire for these goods and services, and our desire to express our personal style to the rest of the world. The age of the matinee ideal may be over, but the age of the internet icon is just beginning.

But before you set your sights on learning to ride horses, speak French, or start a career as a trapeze artist, why not start with something a little less ambitious? What you will need… 1. 2. 3.
A talented beauty team New products and tools Willingness to try something new
Let’s get started. Meet Tatiana. She has come to us wanting to make a change and freshen up her look, without doing anything too drastic. Considering her goals and current look, we decide to do a few things: 1. 2. 3.
Brighten her color Update and modernize her cut Define features and warm up her skin
Tip: Be sure your consultation with your beauty team is thorough. The challenge with getting professional services done can be communicating what you want, so anything you can show your team helps. Bringing images and ideas with you is a great idea. However, remember to let your team be the professionals (that’s what you’re paying them for, after all). COLOR – WARMTH, BRIGHTNESS AND SHINE The first thing we did was work on Tatiana’s hair color, by adding warmth, brightness and shine. *Warmth: golden, honey and a touch of copper *Brightness: lightened the color 2 levels *Shine: glossing treatment that adds shine Tip: If you care for your hair color, it will last longer, look fresher and retain its shine longer. Talk to your colorist about what you should be using for home care.
Prepping the skin is essential to a flawless complexion. For daytime, we kept it basic: cleanse, tone, hydrate and protect. We wanted Tatiana’s skin to look hydrated, but not greasy, and smooth to the touch, but not slick. We built coverage on the skin, starting with lighter products and building, being careful to cover only where necessary. For daytime eyes, we kept it fresh and simple, defining the brow and applying one wash of color to the eyelid. We followed the lash line with a Charcoal liner and smudged it. For nighttime eyes, we deepened the eye with color for a smokey and diffused look. When defining the cheeks, we started with a matte bronzer, lightly sweeping the entire face and focusing under the cheekbones for a contouring effect. We finished off with a light golden pink on the apple of the cheek for a pop of color. For a soft and full lip, we went with a golden pink, to match the cheeks for daytime with just a touch of gloss. For night time, we chose a deeper, violet tone. FINISHING TOUCH We had Tatiana flip her hair over and shake it up; we then sprayed dry hairspray all over to refresh and add volume. Next, we shaped the hair to the desired look and popped a few waves with a curling iron on top to create texture and movement. Then we gave Tatiana her final reveal. She was excited and amazed at how such subtle and simple changes could give her such a dramaticallydifferent look. Of course, feeling and looking good on the outside is not the key to happiness or success, but it can be a motivation and inspiration to kick off work on the inside … and jump-start those New Year’s goals.
CUT AND STYLE – MODERN, WITH A STRONG FRINGE AND SHORTER LENGTH *Modern: current style, strong lines and very few layers *Fringe: blunt, which defines and frames the face (a.k.a. bangs) *Shorter Length: refreshes the ends and adds a chic and sophisticated touch With the right cut, your style time can be cut in half! Tatiana has naturally straight hair and fine texture, so choosing a cut with few layers makes it easier to style. We started with a 5-minute power dry all over the head, getting the hair 90% dry. Using a paddle brush, we smoothed out the ends and lightly finished off with a flat iron on low heat, just to polish off the look. MAKEUP – FRESH DAY LOOK, WITH AN EASY-TO-UPDATE NIGHT LOOK *Day Look: Define all features and warm up the skin *Night Look: Play up the features and deepen color 4 simple makeup steps: 1. 2. 3. 4.

joyfulnoise AN INTERVIEW WITH ELISABETH RÖHM
Photographer: Louiza Vick Stylist: Tiffani Chynell Stylist Assistant: Yesenia Cuevas Hair: Miki Trachtenberg Makeup: Vanessa Scali Manicurist: Ayla Montgomery Assistant: Kimberly Bloom
“It was almost as if necessity and creativity came together with acting.”
S
ince this is, after all, a New Year’s issue, SAG award-winning actress Elisabeth Röhm’s interview started with a cliché, January question. “Do you have any New Year’s resolutions?” I asked, expecting an answer that involved some sort of cleanse/workout routine/militant hydration regimen.
“Be kind to yourself,” replied the star of the upcoming David O. Russell film, Joy. “Be good to yourself be good to others, you’re doing alright.” In a time when we are constantly being told to better ourselves, Elisabeth’s answer was refreshing and unexpected. Refreshing because it’s nice to get permission to go easy on ourselves, and unexpected because this is a woman whose career seems to say that she rarely goes easy on herself, ever. Born in Düsseldorf, Germany, and settled in New York City by the tender age of one, Röhm comes from a family of creative but practical people. Raised by a corporate lawyer father and a stay-at-home mother who dabbled in soap opera writing, intelligence and academic achievement were clearly valued in Röhm’s household. But Elisabeth wasn’t comfortable in the traditional school setting, and struggled academically. It was at the alternative Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers, New York, that Elisabeth finally found her niche and was able to blossom as both an actress and an intellectual.
Upon graduation and unable to shake that streak of practicality she was raised with, Elisabeth got a job as an agent’s assistant and commuted to the bustling metropolis of New York City from the sleepier and more collegiate Yonkers. Frustrated that a day job got in the way of auditioning, she decided to quit her job and give herself one or two years pursuing acting. If it didn’t work out, she decided a practical career using her talents in history and writing could be just fine. “I want to do well in my life, I want to have a nice home and I want to be proud of myself,” Elisabeth remembers thinking. “You can always change your mind. It doesn’t mean that you’re flaky. You do have a right to evolve and change.” Living on unemployement and surviving on bagels for all three meals, plus a combination of talent and luck, got Elisabeth working almost immediately. “It was almost as if necessity and creativity came together with acting,” she reflects. She’s been in front of the camera ever since.
“Only a place like Sarah Lawrence would recognize an unconventional thinker and find a way to evaluate whether they were worthy to be a student,” Röhm says, relaying a tale in which, after receiving not-so-great standardized testing scores, she filled out an extra 30 essay questions in order to prove her academic chops to her future alma mater.
Elisabeth Röhm got her start on the soap opera One Life to Live, playing Dorothy Hayes. From there she played Detective Kate Lockley in Angel (the award-winning spin-off of Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Assistant District Attorney Serena Southerlyn in Law & Order, as well as a slew of other roles on 90210, Heroes, CSI: Miami and The Client List opposite Jennifer Love Hewitt. Not one to stay put in the world of TV, Röhm has been in a number of films, most notably the academy award-winning, American Hustle. Directed by David O. Russell, Röhm so impressed and excited the director that she is appearing in his next film, Joy, starring Jennifer Lawrence.
Putting herself into uncomfortable situations and then proving her worth seems to be a pattern in Elisabeth Röhm’s life, and it was certainly true of her first foray into acting.
The film follows Jennifer Lawrence as Joy Mangano, a single mother of three building a business empire. Elisabeth plays Lawrence’s sister in the muchbuzzed-about film, coming out on Christmas Day.
“It’s funny looking back that I auditioned for my first role because I thought some guy in the theater department was hot,” she tells us.
“It’s a multigenerational film about strong women encouraging one another to be strong women,” Elisabeth explains. “I as her sister struggle with Joy’s magic and trying to please our father, and it’s an honest film about family.”
Drawn in by a crush, Elisabeth got the only female role in the two-person David Henry Hwang play, Bondage. Yes, opposite her crush, Elisabeth Röhm had to portray a woman in an S and M parlor. Understanding why this character did what she did, Elisabeth recalls, instantly allowed her to ask some questions that interested her most: “Why are we here? What do we do while we’re here? My focus has always been on understanding humanity, and I was there to be a writing student, but I discovered what I wanted through acting.”

Family is something that’s important to Röhm as well, who is not only a mother, but also quite vocal about motherhood. Elisabeth started writing as a celebrity guest blogger for People magazine, and her posts about the trials of parenting and her difficulty getting pregnant struck a chord with readers. Röhm’s 2013 book “Baby Steps: Having the Child I Always Wanted (Just Not as I Expected),” details the star’s struggle with infertility and her experience with in-vitro fertilization.

Perhaps it is Elisabeth’s ability to be candid about a not-often-discussed subject matter, combined with the tenacity it takes to get through something as difficult as infertility, that makes her the perfect amount of tough to play opposite the famously brawny, Jennifer Lawrence, in Joy. “What is something you’ve really learned in your life and your career?” I ask, eager to hear how her journey has informed the actress she’s become. “One thing I know for certain,” Elisabeth says with confidence, “is that everybody feels like an outsider looking in. We all feel like freaks. That helps me stay in a compassionate place.” One of the things that excites Elisabeth so much about Joy is that viewers who feel removed will draw strength from the story. Specifically, she thinks women will be drawn to the film. “You watch Jennifer Lawrence and think, ‘I’m that woman, and if I’m not being that woman today, I need to be that woman tomorrow.’” Elisabeth credits Jennifer Lawrence’s performance, but also the quality of David O. Russell’s writing for the power of the film. “I’ve never met someone who writes better or more searingly honest material than David O. Russell. I admire [David O. Russell] so profoundly … with him I feel so safe to take great risks. I just know he’ll always have my back and guide me towards making great creative choices.” It is David O. Russell’s unique relationship with his often-recurring cast members that makes his films so special, Elisabeth explains. “One of the great things about David is that if I have a question or concern about my part I can go directly to him.” We all probably wish we could have a work relationship as transparent as that. Never one to rely entirely on others, Elisabeth takes great care to prepare herself for each role she takes on. “It’s a conglomeration of what you’ve learned and hopefully you get better each year. You want it to be exciting and scary. I like to think of that Agnes de Mille quote, ‘artists take leap after leap in the dark,’” she tells me. Elisabeth is certainly leaping, and we are eager to see where she lands. Not wanting to leave the interview on too profound a note, I ask Elisabeth if there were ever any embarrassing moments on set. She laughs and tells me about one of her final days on set at Law & Order, when the whole cast and crew payed homage to her by walking around set in blonde wigs, drinking diet coke. “I wouldn’t say it was embarrassing so much as it was unforgettable. I mean, that’s what I did while I was there for five years,” she says. It’s nice to hear Elisabeth practicing what she preaches, and turning a perhaps-mortifying experience into something much nicer. As we end our conversation, it is clear that Elisabeth Röhm has a lot of reasons to be nice to herself right now. She has a wonderful daughter. The book she wrote about becoming a mother has given her a whole new way to connect with women. Joy is another opportunity to act daringly, and to show, as Elisabeth puts it, “the spirit of the female heart.” We don’t know about you, but here at CVLUX we are seriously considering sending a thank you note to the cute guy who auditioned for that Sarah Lawrence play. If he hadn’t, who knows what would’ve happened?

Stein Eriksen Lodge Deer Valley, Utah I love my Southern California home, as well as the amazing beach resorts that are only a short drive away. This being said, I also yearn for snowy mountains, and after a quick 2-hour flight from LA to Salt Lake City, I feel instantly at home in this classic lodge—and so does my honey! Of course everyone has a favorite mountain or resort, but my heart belongs to Stein Eriksen. One of my favorite styles for traveling, especially for romantic getaways, is an amazing lodge. I love the warmth, the wood and the cashmere softness, from my sweater to my throw blanket. Being in the mountains is the perfect place to cuddle with your loved one, whether in front of a fire, on a chairlift or enjoying the views of the slopes from your private hot tub on the balcony after a day of skiing! Returning to a luxury hotel after a day of physical activity makes an afternoon at the spa or a well-deserved Angus beef burger and local beer (my preferred après ski option!) a treat. Part of what is so special about Stein is the service. We enjoyed some spring skiing last year, and I was once again reminded of how passionate and connected each employee feels about this property. Not only are guests greeted with a smile, but the valet is genuinely interested in how your day was. Even the turn-down service is special: after retreating back to my room, my phone cord has been coiled and tied with a Stein Eriksen ribbon, there is a goodnight note from housekeeping and there is local bourbon and two cold glasses waiting in the fridge. The attention to detail, the service and the style is what will always keep us coming back to Stein Eriksen for those romantic adventures away from home! Tips Eat: The elegant ambiance of Glitretind, on the property, makes for the ideal dream date location. Drink: Catch some local live music over a Dark & Stormy at Riverhorse on Main. Romantic Experience: Take a horse-drawn sleigh ride in the snow, snuggled under a blanket.
El Encanto Santa Barbara, California Belmond El Encanto was one of the most highly-anticipated resorts to open just a few years ago, with the property originally opening in 1918, closed in 2006 for extensive renovations, and then unveiled in 2013. Considering the history surrounding this iconic property, everyone from local Santa Barbara residents to anyone that enjoys the CA coast, waited patiently for this historic property to finally regain its elite status among five-star properties in Southern California. I personally fell in love with this property even before I saw it in person! I followed the press around the initial closure and I read each article that detailed all of the steps that Belmond (formally Orient-Express) was taking in order to make sure that the property would retain the authenticity of the past, while embodying the modern elegance of today and tomorrow. Of course, when my partner and I were planning a romantic getaway to celebrate our 5th year anniversary, we knew this was the perfect place so close to home. Some of the favorite things about Santa Barbara are the hustle and bustle of State Street, the views and fabulous seafood on the pier, and just spending a lovely afternoon riding bikes (the hotel offers electric bikes, complimentary!) through the quaint yet perfectly-manicured streets and neighborhoods. And what sets Belmond El Encanto apart is the location, right in the middle of the Santa Barbara hills with full, sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. You pull your car into the porte-cochere and are immediately welcomed by a sense of belonging, feeling part of a secret clubhouse where only people “in the know” are visiting the same place. The grounds are completely manicured and while Belmond El Encanto covers 7 acres, each bungalow feels intimate and completely private. I adore the fact that the busy streets of Santa Barbara are just down the way, but it can be difficult to find the energy to leave your porch after enjoying hot apple cider (perfect for chilly evenings), the roaring fireplace in your bungalow, a nice bottle of CA pinot noir, or the stunning pool that sits right in the middle of the property and offers the best views, anytime of the day. Ahhhh… Tips Eat: Regularly voted as one of the best restaurants in Santa Barbara, Downey’s has stellar food to enjoy with someone you adore. Drink: The Wine Room, on property, is the perfect warm and intimate setting to enjoy perfectly-paired wines selected from local vineyards. Romantic Experience: Take their bicycles out on a sunset cruise along the beach.

Ritz Carlton Laguna Niguel, California
I have stayed at The Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel, every December for the past 4 years, for good reason: breathtaking views and impeccable service. The location of this gorgeous property perched in the cliffs, overlooking the clear views of the Pacific, speaks for itself, and not unlike other Ritz Carlton properties, Laguna Niguel represents service with a smile, name recognition and acute attention to detail around every corner. While I love this hotel year round, it is the holiday season that is always my favorite. There is something so unique and special about bundling up in a new sweater, grabbing a cup of hot cocoa and listening to the waves crash from your balcony. To me, combining the winter season with ocean views is a spectacular way to spend a romantic holiday weekend before the crazy (yet, still wonderful) family holiday time starts.
The hotel itself is luxurious yet charming with its cool colors, mirrored décor, and blue accent details to match the ocean below. My absolute favorite aspect of this resort is the massive gingerbread house that changes themes every year! I may be on a romantic getaway but I love the smell of the holidays, the kids listening to story time in the lobby, and the upbeat nature and cheer from my surroundings. Tips Eat: Catch the sunset over an amazing meal at 180BLŨ, which features panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. Drink: Broadway boasts impressive seasonal cocktail and whiskey menus to please every palate. Romantic Experience: If you’re feeling adventurous, take a hike to the Top of the World, one of the highest points in Laguna … and breathe in the ocean air.
St. Regis Hotel San Francisco, California San Francisco is the most romantic U.S. city, in my opinion, but St. Regis is what escalated our experience to the next level. There are so many things that I love about this hotel but it may have been my initial impression that became a memory that I will always hold dear. I remember that first step into the hotel lobby, possibly my favorite lobby in California! It was one of the first times I’ve entered a hotel lobby and didn’t immediately want to go straight to my room. The room can wait, in comparison to immediately enjoying a glass of champagne next to the huge fireplace that serves as a beautiful piece of art as much as a source of warmth. We always try to arrive just in time for the 5 p.m. champagne ritual, a romantic time when the lobby transitions from day to night with dim lights, candles glowing and sultry music. The lobby and hallways are cloaked in grey and silver, in dark, rich tones, while the rooms are a beautiful (and equally as rich) neutral color palette with splashes of stronger shades throughout the artwork and decor. The bed is tops, the views cover a beautiful scope of the San Francisco metropolitan attitude and the tub is the ideal place for that long, relaxing bubble bath. Speaking of soaks, we also LOVE the heated infinity lap pool. Personally, this is the kind of exercise that I can actually get excited about in the winter: swimming a few laps as I watch the snow fall on the buildings around me is the perfect way to start my day. Guests can also enjoy the new seasonal spa treatment, “Hot Toddy Ritual,” which includes a honey and cinnamon body masque with a drizzling of warm honey during the body wrap. Wow! Any hotel whose bartender created my favorite cocktail, a Bloody Mary, is a place that we will always return to! Just one more reason we will continue to visit San Fran for our romantic getaways—where sometimes we get to mix business with pleasure! Tips Eat: Both rustic and romantic, the mere mention of Quince excites even the most seasoned San Fran foodies. Drink: Literally tucked away in an alley, Bix features nightly jazz and an excellent spirits selection. Romantic Experience: Take a sunset sail on a catamaran around the San Francisco Bay.
