LETTER from the

E

EDITOR

very issue of CVLUX brings something new and exciting, and this one is no exception. I am especially proud of this edition for a myriad of reasons. Let’s begin with the business end of the company. This January, we are rolling additional, new newsstand locations throughout the Central Valley, increasing our distribution. This is due to the overwhelming support of our advertisers and readers, and Donna and I are so proud of everyone who has helped grow the publication to the place we are now. Thank you so much for all your support over the years—it is overwhelming at times. This issue highlights our annual Luxury Awards. We have worked hard to change up the format for this year’s event, as we celebrate the start of our fifth year in business, making this an evening you won’t want to miss. There will be a dinner on the 26th of January 2018 at TorNino’s Banquets in Fresno, California. A portion of this year’s proceeds will be donated to the Art of Life Cancer Foundation, a local organization that is near and dear to our hearts. The 2018 nominees are posted in the Luxury Awards section of the magazine beginning on page 21, so be sure to check out all the businesses and community members who are helping better the Central Valley and the surrounding areas. For more information regarding this year’s event, please visit CVLUX.com. This edition’s cover girl is the multi-talented, Academy Award-winning actress Catherine Zeta-Jones. Catherine has been hard at work building her Casa Zeta-Jones home collection, and she was so excited to share all the upcoming, fabulous details with us. Being a true woman of influence Catherine shines in the spread “Captivating Catherine”, shot by celebrity photographer, John Russo. She is simply a delight, and we are so fortunate to have this veteran actress grace our New Year cover. To learn more about Catherine and her career, please see the feature on page 56. On the multi-media front, you may notice some changes to our website. This year we will be adding a more in-depth blog and shopping section to keep you up to date on all the latest trends and happenings on a daily basis. This is just another way we intend to engage our readers beyond the print edition of the publication. Expect these changes to be rolled out by early spring, just in time for our annual Home & Garden edition. So let this New Year be one for the record books, and thank you again for all your continued love and support. Happy 5th Birthday, CVLUX! Cheers,

David

About

—22— JAN | FEB

The Art of Life Cancer Foundation is a 501(c)3 Community Benefit Organization that exists to inspire people impacted by cancer to connect and heal through creative expression. Through the arts, cancer survivors are able to process their emotions, find camaraderie with other survivors, and know that they are not alone. Recognizing that everyone is in some way touched by cancer, the Art of Life has initiated a “movement of hope” in the Central Valley, transforming three acres inside Woodward Park to become the Art of Life Healing Garden, a place for our community to celebrate life, pass on hope, and find healing during life’s most difficult seasons.

LIZ HARRISON Liz Harrison is co-anchor of Action News Live at 11. She is also an Emmy-winning reporter specializing in faith-based and community related stories. Liz began her broadcasting career at ABC30 in 1982. Over the years, she has anchored just about every newscast at the station, and done everything from consumer to medical reporting. She and photo-journalist Richard Harmelink won an Emmy Award in May 2010 for excellence in reporting for a story on how our military trains for war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Through her stories, Liz enjoys giving a “voice” to those who don’t ordinarily have a “voice.” Liz Harrison attended the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, and graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in broadcasting. Liz’s formative years were spent in Baltimore, Maryland and Brussels, Belgium. It was living overseas that gave Liz an appreciation for people of different creeds and cultures. Liz has two grown sons and a college-age daughter. When she doesn’t have her “nose in the news,” Liz enjoys cooking, reading, Bikram Yoga, and biking ... the motorized and the pedal-powered kind!

SHAKE +STIR HOSTED AT CAMPAGNIA RESTAURANT Managing Editor Lauren Barisic Photographer Don Dizon Florals Simply Flowers

—40— JAN | FEB

D

onna Kaczmarski asked three Fresno ladies to join her for the fourth installment of Shake+Stir, this time held at Campagnia Restaurant in northern Fresno’s Champlain and Perrin Shopping Center. Campagnia’s owner, Tony Sciola, selected a sampler menu composed of four cocktails and six appetizers, prepared by Chef Floro Burgnosen, for Jude Lanfranco, Kelly Talant, and Linda Smittcamp, to enjoy over the course of the evening. Tony welcomed the ladies with the Patio Sparkler cocktail in hand. The sparkling wine, Stoli Razz vodka, 7UP, and cranberry juice concoction was a refreshing invitation for everyone to take a seat in the heart of the restaurant. The ambiance in Campagnia is seductive, attributed to the warm lighting against subdued yet contemporary décor and its dark ceiling. Proteas, Oriental lilies, and spider mums highlighted the floral table arrangement, made by Simply Flowers’ Mariah Walton, which also included colorful ranunculus, lavender armeria, and a variety of eucalyptus leaves in a glossy black rose bowl. First out was the Fresh Mozzarella & Sun Dried Tomato Bruschetta, with arugula, balsamic drizzle, pecorino cheese, and an unexpected burst of chili pesto, which was an instant hit. “It’s not like the other (bruschetta) you get,” raved Jude. Linda eagerly agreed that it had, “a great kick!”

Description alone of the Roasted Pear & Applewood Bacon Pizza, with Gorgonzola cheese, then topped with a bed of wild arugula, elicited excitement. Jude was drawn in by “the aroma of bacon and the combination of sweet and salty.” The pear added a lovely sweetness to the subtle onion flavor, which Kelly really appreciated. By now the women were opening up about their individual interests; a love of travel is one thing they all had in common. Everyone agreed that trying different foods is the best way to experiencing other cultures. Few restaurants in Fresno boast a spectrum of culinary experiences like Campagnia. It offers an eclectic menu of California Bistro Cuisine. What makes Campagnia special is its ability to encompass so many types of food individually well; each dish can stand alone as unique. A shift from Italian flavors to Asian infusion began with the Cool Cucumber cocktail, made with Cucumber vodka, fresh lemon juice, and muddled cucumber, which Jude raved about for its simplicity and crispness. A frequent Campagnia patron, Linda said she was looking forward to sipping on this drink come summer. Hands down, the Savory Fresh Water Prawns, with orange-tarragon glaze, was this crowd’s favorite dish of the evening. “This is our favorite!” declared the women at the table with immediate conviction. Kelly, Linda, and Jude agreed that they liked this appetizer best because, unlike coconut shrimp, the prawns’ crust was crispy yet moist.

“Smart, independent and stunning.

2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 SUV

—41— JAN | FEB

Seared Ahi Tuna was presented with a Fuji Apple Salad, and served with a sauce trio of soy, chipotle aioli, and peanut drizzle. The tangy apples were cut to resemble a coleslaw consistency. When eaten together, the union of tender fish with crunchy Fuji allowed for an entirely new textural experience.

K

elly shared a personal goal to fully experience life by pushing herself out of her comfort zone. Life experience and career paths were hot topics amid the ladies all evening, and each shared how they found fulfillment in giving back to the community…and grandkids, which both Linda and Jude have. Professional accomplishments aside, family is obviously first and foremost in the lives of these women. A Spicy Raspberry Margarita, made with Espolon tequila, Cointreau, fresh lemon and lime juices, and muddled jalapeños and raspberries livened up the mood. “Wow!” both Kelly and Linda exclaimed simultaneously. The jalapeño was indeed unexpected, yet not overpowering.

Just like the women who drive it.” ~Katie Biehl

When compared to the Lexus RX 350, the new 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 SUV stands out as the smartest choice. With a starting price of $40,050*, the GLC 300 not only costs $3,170 less, but it gives you more in standard luxury and convenience features, gas mileage, storage and safety. No wonder US News & World Report rates the GLC 300 higher than Lexus on its list of the Best Luxury SUVs with 2 Rows. Come into Mercedes-Benz of Fresno today for a test drive, enjoy a complimentary latte at our coffee bar, and find out how nobody is as accessible for your every need, or as dedicated to personal service, like Scott & Katie. As decisions go, it’s just plain smart! Call now for an appointment: (559) 438-0300 7055 North Palm Ave | Fresno, CA 93650 | MBofFresno.com *2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC 350 $40,050 MSRP versus 2017 Lexus RX 350 $43,220 MSRP stated on manufacturers’ websites.

T

he Pork & Shrimp Pot Stickers were served with marinated French green beans, soy-citrus sauce and chili pasta. Jude noted that the combination of ground pork and shrimp had the consistency of sausage, which she liked because of how well it stayed together when dipped in sauce. The ladies loved how the perfectly al dente string beans complimented the pot stickers, and the light tossing in soy-citrus sauce made them just different enough. Last but not least was the Mac & Cheese, made with cheddar, asiago, and Gorgonzola cheeses, with Applewood bacon, scallions, and sun-dried tomatoes, then topped with toasted breadcrumbs, which made this dish anything but ordinary. “This is one of David’s favorites!” Donna revealed in reference to her CVLUX partner. This was clearly a noted favorite beyond the ladies at present. Dessert came in liquid form. “Oh yeah!” Jude shouted as the waitress described Campagnia’s Italian Espresso Martini, which was made with fresh brewed espresso, Bailey’s, whipped vodka, and Kahlua. Jude immediately decided this was her favorite drink of the night…before it even came out! “Now this is quality!” Linda proclaimed with delight. Though served chilled, this martini could be enjoyed year-round, and everyone agreed that it was the perfect way to end any day. Going into 2018, curiosity as to New Year’s resolutions surfaced. “It’s a fresh start,” remarked Linda. “I don’t make them!” Jude declared with a laugh. Donna said she felt the New Year started with the crispness of fall, while Kelly said she felt it started with the freshness of spring. Though these ladies had altering views on the representation of New Year’s Eve, at least they could all agree how very blessed they felt to be ushering in another year.

The stories we have read about Catherine Zeta-Jones over the course of her immense acting career describe her walking into interviews with all kinds of elegance and poise. She’s old Hollywood, wisdom and youth all rolled into one. A combination of sweet and savvy, Catherine is an actress who genuinely understands the fame she carries around with her, yet she’s the first to remind you that she is just a lucky girl who got famous doing what she loved.

S

itting by my phone, waiting to interview an actress who has won countless awards, including an Oscar (Chicago) and a Tony (A Little Night Music), it was difficult to not feel nervous. I may not have looked Catherine Zeta-Jones in the eye, but the pressure was still there.

That collection, now formally transformed into a new signature home collection called Casa Zeta-Jones, which officially launched September 28th on QVC, encompasses everything from down blankets and rugs to bath towels and holiday décor. Much like Zeta-Jones herself, the style of the collection aims to be relatable to everyone by marrying elegance with warmth.

My experience? Catherine Zeta-Jones is indeed a movie star, but she is also the most down-toearth person to whom I’ve ever spoken. Born in Wales, she and her two brothers grew up the children of a seamstress and a candy factory owner. Family remained an important part of Zeta-Jones’ identity, even after she started to seriously pursue an acting career, moving to London to star in stage shows such as The Pajama Game and 42nd Street. Years later, that grounding has held up; now one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars, Catherine still manages to make her family and friends the most important things in her life.

“Like all of us, I’m a woman on the go,” Zeta-Jones explains. “I’ve been a professional since the age of nine, and it’s passion that I can’t even put into words, because my life is my acting. I’ve been very lauded, I’ve been very, very lucky, and [I’ve] worked hard in this industry to make it my life. And then I had a family. I was living a very transient life, always on the go, renting apartments for two weeks sometimes, or renting a room in a house.”

“My family, my husband, and my two kids are very important to me,” says Zeta-Jones. “I love to entertain. I bought a big home—not just for the four of us—so that we have room for everyone to stay. 17 years ago, when I was pregnant with my son, I was kind of sequestered for a while and I was kind of a homemaker. I thought it might be time to get a collection going, the kind of things that are affordable, accessible and elegant. So I started putting the collection together … and then I had my two kids, I was busy and did Chicago … and so for 17 years, that’s what I did in my spare time.”

Zeta-Jones doesn’t hesitate to call herself a “gypsy,” but is also quick to point out the other side of her—the side that appreciates having a place to call your own. “What I do have is this kind of fundamental homemaking quality to me, which really comes from my mother, who was a seamstress and her own designer for interiors … before she became a stay-at-home mom,” she continues. “So I had a blueprint of what a home should be. This is something that didn’t just pop up because I like decorating. It’s not that at all. It’s something I’ve been doing all my life.”

—62— JAN | FEB

T

he new venture comes at a time when ZetaJones is reconsidering what it means to have a long and illustrious career, as well as how to sustain that career given the type of roles that are currently available for women over 40.

“I’ve been very specific with the roles I’ve chosen in the past, so I don’t want to start just taking roles to keep acting and being in the public eye,” she admits. “It’s really not an attribute I want to add to my career, to just do stuff so that it seems like I haven’t stopped doing it. The work I was looking at doing, I wasn’t interested in, and I really felt like, what do I do now? And that’s when I went back to 17 years of files and I really started just putting together something. I called up Daymond John, because I’m a huge Shark Tank fan, and so is my husband. I said, ‘I have an idea,’ and he said to me straight up, ‘Ah, celebrities … it’s just such an influx of people wanting to put their name on something.’” There’s a chance most actresses would feel affronted by this response, but Zeta-Jones is not one of them. Being a brand ambassador, of sorts, is something Catherine has been doing for over 10 years; her face and prestige are almost synonymous with high-profile companies such as Elizabeth Arden and T-Mobile. “[Daymond John] gave me a homework assignment, and in two hours, I emailed him probably about seventeen look books of [everything from] furniture to loungewear [and] sportswear to jewelry,” says Zeta-Jones, explaining her insistence about showing that her dreams weren’t just about another celebrity looking for more fame. “And he went, ‘Okay, I get you.’ And that was two years [ago], and here we are talking about it.” The success of her long-awaited business collides with the actress taking on a role she has waited to play for years: Miami drug lord, Griselda Blanco. Zeta-Jones stars as Blanco in Cocaine Godmother, a film based on the life of the woman who pioneered the drug trade from Colombia to the United States in the 70s and 80s. “When you want to play a character for so long, as an actor, you do your research,” she tells me. “And with her, she’s such a paranoid sort of person because there were so many people who wanted her out of the picture. There’s not a lot that talks about her. So what I wanted to do was get inside of her on an emotional level.” The film will premiere next year on Lifetime, and Zeta-Jones is almost unrecognizable in her role as Griselda, giving a performance that is truly mind-blowing. “There was no redeeming quality about her and I wanted to throw myself into that,” she explains. “For me, that became a physical transformation. And genetically, I worked hard to gain weight. I didn’t want to do any prosthetics; I wanted to get into her mind and my body language is more important to me than a prosthetic nose or chin. We shot it in Vancouver and it was just me, away from my life, away from my family, and I did nothing but be her.”

Zeta-Jones describes it as a transformative experience to play a role with so much depth, but also to portray someone who wasn’t a conventional beauty. “It was so fulfilling to me as an artist not to have a beauty element to her,” she confesses. “Usually every character I play is sexy, youthful or stunning, and it’s always a little intimidating for any woman. This role reminded me why I love being an actor.” The role also reminded Zeta-Jones of why she has created a career out of playing characters with nuance, emotional depth, and soul. “I was so uninterested in what I was being offered, but this was the most amazing working experience I’ve ever had,” she says of acting in Cocaine Godmother. “The beauty of television is, as an actor, I get a chance to play a role like this and people get to see it. It’s guaranteed viewers. It’s not going to some unmemorable independent movie festival and I’m not trying to convince the market of my passion. I wanted to do this role, and I wanted people to be able to see me in a role like this.” The issue of CVLUX that I’m interviewing Zeta-Jones for is an Inspirational Women issue, so I ask a tough question: does she think there’s anything inspiring about a character so morally corrupt?

She basically is a monster,” Zeta-Jones explains. “She was surrounded by violence, surrounded by abuse, but she became this very powerful woman. And there’s something I admire about that, as morally incorrect as it is—how she was powerful and in what industry she was powerful, and the lives that were affected by her. But I have to applaud her for the audacity and the courage in her unstoppable commitment to be the best. When you’re powerful in the movie world or in the corporate world, you’re called a bitch,” Zeta-Jones continues unapologetically. “They wonder what you had to do to get there, and there’s all these connotations that get attached to you as a woman. That is something that you deal with every day.” Talking about Catherine’s own inspirations reiterates her strong stance on women in a professional sense, and serves to drive those points home. “I came from a very small place and made it big, and it’s hard. And it’s bizarre, because, ‘Oh, you’re so lucky,’ and my answer to that is, ‘Yeah, it’s bizarre; the harder I work, the luckier I get,” Zeta-Jones muses. “I think the one thing that I’d like to put my stamp on is that, as women, we have to hold each other up,” she continues. “We have to let the ladder down, let everyone walk up it, and then keep supporting each other and protect each other. Because women can be equally as detrimental as men can be to each other and there’s room for all of us. There’s room for two great actors on the same screen. And this whole inherent competition that is instilled in us … I see it with my daughter now. I think for us, supporting each other and holding each other up as women will make our numbers so much more powerful.” If Catherine Zeta-Jones is at the frontlines of a women’s revolution, we’re ready to be in her army.

A PROFILE OF THE DIVA: ANN T. SULLIVAN WHITEHURST

ENCORE Editor In Chief David Manning Photographer Don Dizon

Shot on location at the historic Warnors Theatre, courtesy of Dick and Sally Caglia, with hair and makeup provided by The Spa and Hungry Hair Salon at Fig Garden Village.

As many of you know, I very rarely write articles anymore. It’s not because I don’t enjoy writing, but rather my time doesn’t allow me to do so very often. However, every once in a great while, a story comes along, and I feel compelled to share my perspective on something or, in this case, someone truly special.

F

ive years ago this January, Ann picked up her phone and gave me a ring. At this point, she and I had known each other for quite some time, so naturally she had my direct line. I never will forget when she told me exactly what the magazine’s problem, or rather opportunity, was, in only a way Ann could. It was then that she pitched her idea for her High Profile articles, which have been featured in almost every edition of CVLUX. The idea was very simple—to tell the story of individuals who were truly instrumental in a social dialogue. Some of my favorite profiles over the years have featured John Harris, Dina Juve, and the precocious Greer Grammer. So it seemed only fitting for me to turn the tables, for this, our fifth anniversary edition, and profile one of the most influential woman I know: Ann T. Sullivan Whitehurst.

Ann is a Valley product, reared here in Fresno. She began her career at Community Regional in 1972 as a surgical nurse in ortho and neuro. Her dad was a prominent banker, who, in 1973, asked her to come to work with him at his bank. There, she honed her skills in working with trusts, banking, financial planning, and real estate as his manager. Then in 1980, St. Agnes recruited her to begin a PR program. Soon after, in 1983, that included the Anemic Foundation, at which time she became Vice President of Communication and Foundation. In 1981, she married William Whitehurst, and together they had three handsome sons, William, Winston, and Warren. Ann was one of the ten Sullivan children, but as her signature joke goes, “After meeting me, you would swear I was an only child.”

—68— JAN | FEB

This plays into the public persona she has so artfully crafted over the years. There is a direct candor in her approach to life. So many people only remember her as the center of attention, the guest who dominates the room, and drives the conversation. But I know a different side to Ann that very few people ever get too see. There is a deep undercurrent of compassion for others, and a sense of unyielding loyalty, which never wavers. I have seen this devotion for myself, and others, played out many times. Her sons affectionately came to call this “Ann mode” … but I like thinking of it as full-tilt “Diva.” When she goes into “Ann mode,” it is used, almost exclusively, to help someone or a cause that is special and dear to her. This is why, when she started, and headed up the Saint Agnes Foundation in 1980, she was perfect for the role. Over her tenure, she raised over 30 million dollars for the hospital and chapel. She did this mainly by using her contacts and demanding that everyone participate. I will never forget when she went into a very prominent businessman’s office, who shall remain nameless, sat there in his chair, waiting for him with her hand on his checkbook. When he entered, she politely asked him for a check. She offered to even make it out for him, and so she did. You have to admire a woman, or anyone really, with this much tenacity. How else are people supposed to know what you want, right? When researching this article, I went back through all the encounters I’ve had with the beguiling Mrs. Whitehurst, or Mrs. W. for short. Originally, her eldest son William, known to most as Billy, introduced me to Ann. It was a very awkward encounter, which I won’t waste your time by reliving, but let’s just say I made a distinct impression. Perhaps that’s why she now calls me “her Nathan Lane.” Our relationship began to blossom, and now I find we are practically inseparable; we even do spa day together. But when I first met her, I didn’t really “know” her, if that makes sense. For example, I was always told she was an opera singer and actress, I even have some of her albums, but I didn’t know she was a surgical nurse as well. This explains how she ended up running the Saint Agnes Medical Foundation, and where she developed her love of medicine. I also knew her as “The Diva” because of her infamous red Cadillac convertible, with custom diva license plates, which she flaunted as she tore up and down Van Ness Boulevard. I didn’t realize that at the same time, however, after leaving Saint Agnes, she was running one of the Central Valley’s leading advertising agencies, W.S.W., which stands for the initials of all three of her boys. And most people don’t even realize that she doesn’t work for me, because I honestly couldn’t afford her, and her actual current day job is that of a nurse case manager. Yes, that’s right … Mrs. Whitehurst still insists on working, and enjoys every minute of it. You see, she likes to think, and that’s why it is so easy for her to connect people and businesses. It’s that ability to network, and evolve, which makes her so special. She is very fortunate; in life, most people only get to write one story, or novel, if you like to think of it that way. Ann has a whole volume of books, with an enormous cast of characters, some of which I got to chat with for this particular piece. “The first thing that comes to mind when asked how to describe Ann … she is one-of-a-kind,” Craig Castro, Executive Vice President, and Corporate Chief Operating Officer of Community Medical Centers recounted to me. “Not only is her presence known in any setting; her opera-like entrances to gatherings always brings a big smile to many faces. But most importantly, Ann is one of those people that can always be counted on to come through when needed.”

I asked Craig about what he remembered regarding their first meeting. He laughed … clearly it was memorable. “I met Ann in 1985 when we worked together at Saint Agnes. She was the Vice President of the Foundation when I was hired as the hospital’s first systems analyst. She called me in for a meeting in her office the first week I arrived and said, ‘Honey, WE have a problem! How are WE going to fix this botched fundraising computer system project?’ I recall hearing her singing from her office later that day, and could not help but think she was in a better mood.” Perhaps that is why Craig and his wife, Alexandria, asked Ann to sing the “Ave Maria” at their wedding 23 years ago. Singing was not an anomaly for Ann at the workplace—just talk to Dr. Donald Huene, Orthopedic surgeon. I was lucky enough to accompany him, with Ann, and a small group to the opera a few years ago to see a rousing rendition of Tosca. That evening, he told me how she used to blare the music, and sing at the top of her lungs, while they were scrubbing up for surgery. Recently, Dr. Huene told me another very comical story about Ann and the opera. “I am a devoted fan of opera, and Ann told me that she was singing the part of Musetta in La Boheme, and invited me backstage to see her after the performance. She put on a spectacular show, dragging around a live dog that just froze, and everyone thought it was a paper mache stage prop. After the production ended, I asked my wife if she would be interested in going backstage, seeing as my RN in the OR I worked with a few days ago had just sung Musetta, and had invited me to join the performers after the show. I told my wife that I had just got acquainted with Ann, and that she might not recognize me, as I really didn’t know her well, explaining that we had just met during surgery a few days prior. When we went backstage, Ann physically hugged me, showering me with kisses and almost knocking us both over. My wife politely asked how the nurses that I actually did know really well would have responded, suggesting that I might not have survived the encounter.” Her stage presence was apparent at a very young age, according to Richard Spencer, CEO and President of Harris Construction and Spencer Enterprises, when he recounted seeing her on stage for the first time. “I have known Ann Whitehurst since 1966, when Ann starred in a high school play, and I was a first year teacher. People say that he or she is one-of-a-kind—that phrase was invented to describe Ann. She lights up whatever room she enters with her outrageous personality. In my opinion, however, her most influential role was not on stage but rather as Vice President for the Saint Agnes Medical Center Foundation. The combination of her being a trained nurse and a gregarious solicitor of funds is what she brought to the table, and through that she put Saint Agnes fundraising on the map. She did all this while raising her three boys who are her real crowning achievements.” After speaking with everyone, I think John Harris, owner of Harris Ranch and Harris Farms said it best. “Ann is full of life and always brings energy, wisdom, and good humor to whatever she pursues. She enthusiastically takes on any new challenge, no matter how big or small.” Not to mention, “Her wonderful singing voice has exceptional range.” So I suppose the motto of the story is whether she is on stage, in an operating room, or board meeting, Ann has always written her own script. She is a woman in charge of her own destiny, driven by love, loyalty, and devotion. And it is with all this that I take great joy in calling her my friend.

“We have greater self-confidence when we feel that our body more accurately reflects the person we are inside.”

iolo Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery is a boutique plastic surgery practice located in northeast Fresno emphasizing personalized solutions and attention to detail in a calm, serene atmosphere. As a female plastic surgeon with over 25 years’ experience, Dr. Riolo is well positioned to understand your needs in a sensitive and confidential environment and to offer experience, compassion, and professional care to all her patients.

How Have your life experiences contributed to wHo you are today personally? I was a Nurse. I think we are the sum of our experiences, large or small. One of the most influential factors in my professional development is the path I took into medicine. When I announced as a high school senior that I wanted to be a doctor, everyone around me told me “girls aren’t doctors!” After trying out several majors, I selected nursing and the invaluable experience has carried over into my surgical practice. I learned how to communicate with patients on a lay level, sensitive to their experience as a patient. I believe that softens my approach to this day. I am a Mother. Nothing shapes a person more than becoming a parent; it puts life in a new perspective. It helps me remind other women that we must take care of ourselves to maintain the reserves needed to care for our families. The point of the procedures we undertake is not the result itself, but rather how it boosts self-esteem worn down by the juggling lives we lead. I am a Woman. I think we actually put more internal pressure on ourselves to maintain our youthful appearance than society does. As a woman I understand that drive—as well as the desire to do so without looking fake or overdone. I apply that approach to my patients to help them stay refreshed and looking more like how they feel inside rather than what the date on their driver’s license suggests. wHat’s most rewarding about your work? There are two things. The first is the creative side. I get real joy looking at a completed surgical procedure, or the changes in a face after injectable treatments, and seeing the transformation. More deeply felt is the satisfaction of watching an individual feel better in his or her own body or his or her facial features. We look at the world from behind the mask that is our face and it is nice to feel that we have some control over that. How do you remain true to yourself in your industry? I have learned to say no. I do not try to be all things to all people.

WOMEN’S PLASTIC SURGERY FRESNO HEDIEH ARBABZADEH M.D. BOARD CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON

I

am a board-certified plastic surgeon, and have been practicing in Fresno since 2002. My practice focuses on cosmetic surgery, and encompasses a surgical facility staffed entirely by women professionals. This allows me to provide expertise, perform surgery, and care for my patients in an uncompromising environment. My career goal has not only been to excel in competence and skill, but to also provide my patients with an excellent experience.

“Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself.”

TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR SERVICES. I see patients in consultations for many reasons. Some are interested in a specific procedure to improve their body, while some just want to look less tired. I provide them with information on all surgical and non-surgical options. My patients are 90% women, ranging in age from 16 to 86! WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES FOR YOU IN TODAYS WORKPLACE? In my field of surgery, only 19% of surgeons are women and only 2% of plastic surgeons are female. Attaining a balance between my family and career has been a life- long mission. Wearing the many hats of wife, mother, and professional, it has allowed me to be empathetic and relate to my patients. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR WOMEN GOING INTO YOUR LINE OF WORK? Women are often subtly counseled to stay away from surgery in medical school because the training is long and rigorous. However, women plastic surgeons bring sensibilities to this arena that even the most empathetic of men can’t; women understand how other woman are put together mentally, emotionally, and physically. WHAT’S MOST REWARDING ABOUT YOUR WORK? In the past 20 years the stigma of self-improvement through surgery has significantly diminished. Though the media often showcases the extreme and bizarre, most plastic surgery patients are mainstream women. I am the most satisfied when I can connect with my patients and realize their wishes. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENTS? By far, my biggest accomplishment is raising my daughters.

“Attitude is everything; pick a good one.”

FRESNO ACURA THEEANNA STEVENS OWNER, DEALER PRINCIPAL

WHAT DO YOU WANT POTENTIAL CLIENTS TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS? For years, women have been talked down to or disregarded entirely during the car buying process. We want to put women, the real decision makers, back into the driver’s seat when it comes to automotive buying. Women should feel empowered throughout the car buying process, and it’s our mission to create that experience for them. HOW DO YOU GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY? Running a locally-owned, family business means that we rely on and care for our community a lot. Giving back has always been at the core of our mission; taking care of those that take care of us. Fresno Acura supports multiple non-profits, community events, and outreach programs in order to make our home the place we believe it can be.

I

n 1986, I was offered an opportunity to move to Fresno and begin my journey into the entrepreneurial world. It was in the automotive industry, the first Japanese luxury import dealership, and it was going to be run by a female. Many would have considered this to be an uphill battle not worthy of pursuing, but for me it has been the most rewarding experience of my life.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY. I have been blessed with three beautiful daughters that haven chosen to follow in my footsteps. My girls have been involved in the automotive business since birth, each one by my side a few days after they were born. One daughter graduated with a finance degree, the next in international business, and the third in business entrepreneurship and innovation. They have realized it is a business they can incorporate their educations and individual personalities to make a difference in our community. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR WOMEN GOING INTO YOUR LINE OF WORK? Regardless of the career path one chooses, my advice to all women is to love what you do. Believe in what you do, and stay strong by knowing there is always a way to overcome any and all adversities. WHAT IS MOST REWARDING ABOUT YOUR WORK? My rewards are compounded daily. As a parent, I’m extremely proud of my daughters’ accomplishments. As a boss, I couldn’t be more pleased for the youthful wisdom and sharp creativity they bring to our family of employees. As an owner, the accolades we receive from our loyal customer base reinforces the reason we go to work everyday.

SVP Style, Stems, and Gianni Fine Jewelers, found in the iconic Palatine Building (off of Highway 41) are destinations redefining the caliber of shopping in the Central Valley. Each department, led by designers Sonya Jelladian-Gage, Stephanie Bedrosian, Gina Jelladian, and Mary Papaleo, bring a touch of elegance, luxury, and style to every facet of gifting, living, and celebrating. Whether you are planning a special occasion, redecorating your home, or looking for a special or quick gift, their metropolitan boutique collections are at your complete service!

MARY C. PAPALEO HOW HAVE YOUR LIFE EXPERIENCES CONTRIBUTED TO WHO YOU ARE TODAY PROFESSIONALLY? My life has been full of challenges, successes, of course some “falls,” and a few path-changing struggles. The educational lessons that were derived from all of these moments have been permanently etched in my memory. While I am fortunate to be blessed with a college degree, I truly believe that doing is the only way to master your craft. Fear of failure is your only failure. I will spearhead any challenge that my clients bring to me. I have the will and know that there is a way! SONYA JELLADIAN-GAGE WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE POTENTIAL CLIENTS TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS? These businesses are a reflection of our love. We four women respect, admire, and understand the seasons of life, but especially those of leading women: grandmothers, mothers, daughters, sisters, aunties ... We are here to celebrate with you through each occasion, making your world beautiful and the moments memorable! STEPHANIE M. BEDROSIAN WHAT DIFFERENTIATES YOUR COMPANY? Diversity and Service. A personal goal of mine is to make sure our collections are continually evolving, as is life. In a world where shopping is standardized and service is with a click, we pride ourselves on housing the most unique product mix (in the Central Valley and beyond) for gifting, decorating, celebrating, and living. Our concierge shopping, private jewelry parties, and personal home consultations touch on the exclusivity of our service. When you shop with any of our boutique departments, we hope you feel right at home! GINA S. JELLADIAN WHAT DOES SUCCESS MEAN TO YOU? Success is like a diamond. Multi-faceted, and beautifully flawed from the pressure of its environment. Success is something I will continually chase as I grow in my career, but I feel that the ultimate measure of success is happiness. Each day, I’m surrounded by my family and friends that I love, I have my health, and I get to be a part of the happiest occasions in people’s lives. By this definition, I feel very successful.

BARBARA MENDEZ DIRECTOR OF HUMAN RESOURCES

THERESA VIGIL DIRECTOR OF TABLE GAMES

“A strong woman looks a challenge dead in the eye and gives it a wink.” DEANN KAMALANI WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES FOR WOMEN IN TODAY’S WORKFORCE? Many industries, including gaming, are male-dominated. As the first female executive on the leadership team, I learned that the best way to earn respect is to understand the business inside-out, and dedicate time to working alongside each department to learn their perspective. HOW HAVE YOUR LIFE EXPERIENCES SHAPED WHO YOU ARE AS A PROFESSIONAL? Growing up as an athlete and competing at the collegiate level has been the biggest factor. Sportsmanship gave me the skills to face competition, constant change, and the unexpected, while honing a sense of teamwork and leadership. BARBARA MENDEZ WHO ARE SOME FEMALE LEADERS YOU ADMIRE? Margaret Thatcher, Golda Meir, and Condoleezza Rice. They are pioneers, respected on a global scale, incredibly strong, and resilient.

C

hukchansi Gold Resort & Casino brings the beauty of the Sierra foothills into a world-class destination for gaming, dining, and entertainment near the majestic splendor of Yosemite National Park.

WHAT IS MOST REWARDING IN YOUR WORK? Developing systemic ways and means to support an environment where our leaders are engaged to build thriving teams committed to excellence in performance and guest services. THERESA VIGIL WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR WOMEN GOING INTO YOUR PROFESSION? There are very few women in this position in gaming. It’s a competitive industry and it takes a thick skin, determination, and drive to learn all aspects of the business. Speak up and share your ideas. Be who you are, not who others think you should be, and always stand up for what’s right. Complete the circle by reaching back to mentor someone you see in yourself. Take every opportunity as a learning experience to stay ahead of the game. WHAT IS MOST REWARDING IN YOUR WORK? It’s rewarding for me to be able to adapt to address any issues or challenges that arise, because I know that the decisions I make directly affect the livelihood and sustainability of the Tribe, and insures their sovereignty.

Armed with these principles, incredible new offices, and an innovative team, Realty Concepts is forging a unique path in the ever-evolving real estate industry.

LYNETTE BAKER HOW DO YOU REMAIN TRUE TO YOURSELF AND FIND YOUR OWN VOICE IN YOUR INDUSTRY? I think it’s important that you never compromise who you are and what you stand for. What makes you stand apart and shine is your strength, and that should become your brand. WHAT IS THE #1 WAY YOU SUPPORT CLIENTS? The primary way I support my clients is by going above and beyond, and putting their needs first. My customer service and support continue well after my clients have purchased or sold a home. TRACY DE JONG WHAT DOES SUCCESS MEAN TO YOU? For me, success is being true to yourself, your values, and your principles. It means providing your clients with both a fantastic experience and a level of service that extends not just to the transaction, but also into a lifelong relationship. It means finding a balance between your business, your family, and your spiritual life. HOW DO YOU GIVE BACK TO YOUR COMMUNITY? At the heart of Realty Concepts’ values is our community. They have a great program, called RC Cares, through which we rally our clients, our vendors, and ourselves in an effort to fundraise for several different charitable organizations in town. Additionally, The Light-House Recovery Program is very dear to me, and together, with others in the industry and women of faith, we have raised funds and donations for this worthy organization, which helps women get back on their feet, and, in many instances, reunifies them with their children.

SOFTLY MODERN DESIGNER BARBARA GLASS CREATES AN AIRY OASIS IN ASPEN

INTERIORS EDITOR MIKE

RAGAN PHOTOGRAPHY EMILY MINTON REDFIELD INTERIOR DESIGNER BARBARA GLASS, BARBARA GLASS INC ARCHITECT RICHARD MULLEN, DEMESNE

T

his 1960s home in the McLain Flats of Aspen, Colorado was last remodeled during the 90s in the Arts and Crafts style. Interior Designer Barbara Glass and Architect Richard Mullen partnered on the project to modernize the home, this time by pointing their clients toward the architectural vocabulary of the original period. Richard focused on the architectural elements of the home, starting with the faboulous front door. The Douglas Fir paneled ceilings throughout notably create rich layers of texture and form.

As a means of softening the modern palette, Barbara used greys and creams as the base with pops of color, such as bluegreen and gold, to accent. This classic, monochromatic scheme provides a sense of calm and reflects the colors of Aspen’s magnificent landscape. She loves using organic shapes in linear rooms, as evidenced in the living area where a Michael Berman coffee table lies beneath a chandelier by Ralph Pucci. Tailormade furniture, by RAGS, sits on a handmade custom Tai Ping Rug, which serves to reinforce the soft color story. A sculpture of golden butterflies, by Paul Villinski, adds drama to Richard’s beautiful plaster and steel fireplace.

Barbara’s favorite part of the house is the great room because of its large, open floor plan. The kitchen features a backsplash and hood made of Calcutta marble, surrounded by white oak cabinetry that is finished with both light and dark stains. Around the countertop, four metal and woven leather counter stools are by Mark Albrecht. Local artist Andi Lee, of Andi Lee Design, made the dining room table, set with chairs from A. Rudin.

The master bedroom features a Fortuny chandelier, which Barbara moved from the living room’s original dÊcor. A blue-green grasscloth wall, behind a custom upholstered bed by RAGS, added another layer of texture to the suite. The adjoining bath features a large soaking tub, cased with white oak, to create not just an intimate space, but also a view to daydream.
