New Year Wishes
W
ith each new year comes the feeling of renewed optimism. It’s the idea that, somehow, we can start over again with a clean slate. However, many have found it increasingly difficult to remain optimistic. There is a sorrow that has left a gaping hole in the hearts and minds of millions of Americans. Whether it be the loss of life, income, business…we have all sacrificed a great deal over the last year. Although times feel bleak, one thing remains constant: the strength and perseverance of the American people. We must look to each other for salvation and reflect on the things we do have to comfort ourselves. Look inwards and reset. Remind yourself of the simple pleasures. Turn to family and close friends for laughter and love. Cherish your health, both physical and mental. Make a commitment that what
we have sacrificed and lost over the last year was not done in vain, but, rather, with the purpose of moving forward and learning from our mistakes. Repeat positive mantras and learn to love each other again. It is time to heal. This new year requires more strength and optimism than any year thus far. We must rebuild, remember, and reinvent. We can do this as long as we have each other. May 2021 bring you and your loved ones much joy, success, and, above all, health. Cheers to the New Year,
David

t’s no surprise that CoolSculpting® has become one of the most popular aesthetic treatments on the market since its debut.
Whether you have seen it on television or personally know someone who did a session, there is a big chance you already have heard of the hype around CoolSculpting®. For me, it was both. Between watching Real Housewives and having many of my girlfriends try it before their weddings, I knew I just had to do it. Meet LaserAway, who provides thousands and thousands of CoolSculpting® treatments each year. With 61 locations across the United States, LaserAway is known as the nation’s leader in aesthetic dermatology and yes, your go-to body contouring experts as well. To get a closer look, I chatted with Dr. Will Kirby, board-certified dermatologist and LaserAway’s Chief Medical Officer, to get all of my CoolSculpting® queries answered before my first treatment.
who has committed to a healthy diet, exercise routine, and lifestyle; but, they are unable to get rid of pockets of unwanted fat and they are seeking a non-invasive means to help improve their body shape. If you have fat that is pinchable with two fingers, then you are probably a great candidate! JM How is this different from other body services available today? WK There are multiple treatments in the body contouring category, and they range widely in terms of price, downtime, and side effect profile. While we know that diet and exercise are paramount, we also can all recognize that those two concepts can only go so far. So, if a patient is seeking a non-invasive means by which they can address smaller areas of unwanted, pinchable fat that just won’t respond to traditional lifestyle modification, then they should explore CoolSculpting®.
JM What is CoolSculpting® and why has it taken the beauty world by storm? WK CoolSculpting®, as the name suggests, uses cold technology to contour the body. The medical term is cryolipolysis, which simply means freezing of fat. It’s in high demand because it works! It is non-invasive, has little downtime, and gives demonstrable results in just a few short weeks.
JM What can someone expect during and after the procedure? WK After the assessment, the applicator is applied to the skin and, as you might expect, the patient experiences a cool numbness for the remainder of the treatment time, which is typically about 35 to 45 minutes or as long as 75 minutes depending on the treatment area. What surprises patients most is that the treatment is immediately followed by a moderately vigorous massage in the area where the applicator was placed. See, the handpiece metaphorically “freezes the fat icicles” but the mechanical massage breaks them down.
JM Who would you say is the perfect candidate and why? WK The ideal candidate is someone

Detoxifying YOUR LIFE Health & Fitness Editor Dina Juve
Hello, 2021! Goodbye, 2020… What a year! For the majority of people, it was a very emotional year. There were many “new normals” that didn’t seem “normal” at all. There was a lot of pain, loss, sadness, even anger. It is hard to be happy, excited, and move forward when there is so much suffering. The only way this year will be different is if we can find the strength within ourselves to be the change we want to see in our homes, community, and the world. I’ve never been one to think “everything happens for a reason.” Actually, when others would say this to me, I used to find it very upsetting. Now I understand they usually meant well or just did not know what else to say. I have come to realize that there are gifts in the dark moments of our lives. Some of those dark moments are just too hard for my brain to wrap around “being for a reason.”
I
—28— JAN | FEB
do believe we cannot see the light without the dark, feel bliss without pain, or love without loss. I didn’t always feel this way, and I understand if you do not either. For this reason, I highly recommend the book When Bad Things Happen to Good People by Harold S. Kushner.
If we dwell on the past, we increase our risk of becoming depressed; if we are fearful of the future, we have an increased risk of anxiety— both are not good for our overall health. We must change our perspective and honor the tough life lessons. Only then can we find peace within ourselves.
This book really helped shift my perspective. Sometimes bad things do just happen. Unfortunately, it’s easier to blame them on someone or something and be mad than to understand that it just is what it is. I’ve also learned when someone is going through something challenging or a difficult life change, the best thing I can do is say, “I am sorry.” No judgment, just unconditional love. It is only possible to do this for others if we do this for ourselves first. Make peace with anything holding you back and dive deep into what makes you perfectly imperfect.
We only truly have this moment in time, and we can choose to be happy or unhappy—both take the same amount of energy, so let’s try to be happy. If you have areas you are unhappy about that you are in control of, make those changes. When I teach mindfulness techniques, I always ask the question, “If today was your last day on earth, what do you already have that you are so thankful for?” The answers are usually very basic and simple, not complex.
The questions below will guide you. If you don’t know the answers right now, that’s okay. Keep asking these questions and the answers will come to you. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
What makes you, YOU? Who are you? Who do you want to be? What makes you happy? What are your unique gifts? What is your purpose in life?
Only when we understand ourselves can we help, serve, and give back to others in all we do, even within our own homes and family. 2020 definitely taught us we do not control everything around us and anything can change in a moment, but, no matter what, you are still you. It’s important to love the person you are.
This helps us feel relieved about what we already have and reduces feeling alarmed about “what ifs.” If you are unsure about what you are relieved to already have, write a list. You might be pleasantly surprised by all that you already have. Being warm, kind, loving, and positive toward ourselves helps us be optimistic, hopeful, and excited, instead of dreading what might happen. When we love ourselves, it shows—we glow, and our future looks so much brighter and more beautiful with an abundance of opportunities. So, let’s start detoxifying your life: mind, body, and soul! Now take a moment to breathe. Be open to creating change. Fill your heart with love. If this is hard to do, know you are not alone and try again. Open up to being the best version of you because you are worth it.
Detoxifying Your Mind
Detoxifying Your Body
Change what you say to yourself daily.
Most of us know what to do, but it can be hard to make health a priority. It is so important that you find the time to move your body, get adequate sleep, breathe, restore daily, and eat a healthy, balanced diet. In my experience, food can be a constant struggle. Below are a few of my favorite recipes to reset my body and feel good from the inside out. Use them as guidelines. Have fun with them. Eliminate or add items based on your dietary needs, consistency, and taste preferences. Always talk to your doctor if you have questions.
We all converse within—make sure you are encouraging yourself. What we say, we become. What we tell ourselves, we will see all around us. Create new sentences that reflect how you want to feel, even if in the moment you feel differently. The words or sentences you repeat about yourself should make you feel exhilarated and shift your mindset quickly. Example: When you tell yourself negative thoughts, it will manifest in negative feelings and create a trickle-down effect on your overall well-being. So, find sentences to repeat that resonate with you—not others, you. When I feel fearful, I repeat, “I am love. I see with love. I hold all my experiences up with love.” Start the day on a positive tone. What is the first thing you see and do in the morning? Our environments and habits can impact our mindset. Start by looking around where you sleep. Pay attention to what you do when you wake up. These are areas we can change. Let the first thing you see and do be an empowering message to your brain that represents how you want your days to be. Example: If you immediately start working, answering texts, or getting on social media when you wake up in the morning, you’ll likely start your day off stressed. So, replace it with anything that makes you want to jump out of bed to take on the day in a positive way. Be mindful of your surroundings. That means be careful what you watch, who you are around, and anything that does not make you feel good. This can be hard because our egos and stubbornness can get in the way. We can get caught up on how others will view us, but we must listen to how it makes us feel in our mind and deep down in our gut. If it doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Example: There are times you cannot watch TV, be on social media, and/or even be around certain environments without it affecting you. However, you might not be able to cut out everything that doesn’t make you feel good. So, slowly start making changes where you can. Notice what makes you feel good versus bad. Those are signals guiding us. Most of us are just too busy, tired, or preoccupied to listen. When we do not listen to what our mind is telling us, it will show up in our bodies and eventually drain our soul. If you feel a negative pull, stop, acknowledge it, and take note. At a minimum, we can change the way we view something and start creating small changes within. Example: You start doing something with the intention of improving your health. Others seem to enjoy it, but it just never feels right to you even after giving it an honest try. What works for someone else may not work for you. So, move forward and try something different, instead of going in circles.
Lemon Honey Aloe Vera Juice Serves 1
Ingredients 1½ cups aloe vera gel 2 cups water 4 tsps. honey 1 lemon Add it all in the blender, blend, refrigerate, and enjoy! Aloe vera is seasonal. One of my favorite aloe vera gel brands, typically available all year long, is Lily of the Desert Aloe Vera Whole Leaf (filtered). Health benefits of aloe vera include: support healthy digestion, produce anti-inflammatory action, possess anti-aging effects and wound healing properties. Aloe vera can have a strong laxative effect, so be careful. If you grow your own aloe vera plant, make sure you research how to use gel from the aloe vera leaf.
—31— JAN | FEB
Superfood Salad Serves 2
Ingredients 2 cups spinach, leafy greens, or shredded slaw mix ¾ cup whole grains, quinoa, brown rice, or sweet potato ½ cup of berries, green apples, or raisins ½ cup of legumes or beans ½ cup of nuts and seeds To assemble the salad, first select your preferred greens base, adding it to a mixing bowl large enough to toss all the ingredients in. Next, add in your grain of choice, followed by the fruit, legumes or beans, and, finally, the nuts and seeds. Use this formula as a rough outline for Superfood Salad variations.
Easy Detox Dressing Serves 2
Ingredients 2½ tbs. olive oil 1½ tbs. apple cider vinegar Lemon juice and black pepper to taste. Emulsify the olive oil and apple cider vinegar together. Whisk in lemon juice and black pepper to your desired taste. Assemble the Superfood Salad with the Easy Detox Dressing. I like my salads moist, so I refrigerate it all after mixing. You can always wait to drizzle until you are ready to eat. Health benefits of superfoods include: abundance in vitamins and minerals, improves heart health, and increases energy. This is a lot of superfoods, which, for some of us, can be hard to digest. If you are unsure, start with just a few ingredients and add in or take out items depending on how you feel or respond to them.
Detoxifying Your Soul Be self-full! Which means be clear about who you are and honor that person, instead of who you think you should be. This is different than being selfish, which means you are thinking only of yourself with no regard for others. Knowing the difference between the two is important. We must give to ourselves first, otherwise we do not have the energy for others. Trust me—I’ve tried to be everything to everyone, which made me no one to anyone. Even your family, significant other, and children or grandchildren will feel your unhappiness. Actions always speak louder than words. Pray, meditate, connect with nature, find a creative expression, laugh so hard your stomach hurts, and spend time with like-minded people. This is where community can be really important. We have an internal need to feel connected to others, to be understood, loved, not judged, and to be allowed to show up exactly as we are. Find places, people, groups, and clubs that you like to fill up your soul cup. It’s okay to be angry, mad, sad, and to cry. You just don’t want this to be the norm, which would quickly mean it’s gone from healthy to unhealthy. There are times we need to blast our favorite song, watch a sad movie, or just have a good cry. It can help us move on from things weighing us down. Never hesitate to seek help from a trusted friend or loving family member. Always seek immediate medical attention from a specialist if you want to hurt yourself or others. Be a baby. Babies are pure innocence. They just keep it simple—eat, sleep, poop, pee, play, repeat. Even holding a baby can soothe the soul. Time feels like it stops, and, in those moments, all is good around us and within us. Thoughts do not define babies until we as adults start programming the meaning of the world around them. Don’t you ever wonder at what age it was that people’s words started defining who we are? When words replaced all that joy, space to explore, safety, and peace within us? We still deserve this, so take it back. It’s yours. CREATING SPACE Preserving Sanctuary While Working from Home Interiors Editor Erin Melkonian Photographer Ellie Koleen
They say to not take your work home, but now, work is at home for many. For those of us who have made the transition to working from home, our once familiar nine-to-five schedule has been intercepted by a run-on of unpredictable days where we fit in work where we can. For now, schooling kids, doing household chores, and cooking three meals a day have become the priority. To ensure that we continue to be successful in our professional lives, having a workspace that motivates, kindles, and centers our creative minds is essential. But it is also equally important to maintain the qualities of our home that render it a sanctuary. Following are some tips on ways to find this balance.
Dedicate a space to yourself. First and foremost, I highly recommend that you dedicate a space in your home to yourself. A dining table or corner niche are both appropriate options if you don’t have a spare room. Just make sure that the area is solely yours and not shared with anyone else. If you are like me, then you have work-, home-, and child-related tasks that must be managed daily. In this case, it is important to remember to keep personal and professional spaces separate, both physically and mentally. This will help define your many roles and, thus, how your time allotted to each is focused. You’ll be more productive with work and left with more personal time.
Keep your surface minimal. Once you’ve established your work domain, don’t let it get cluttered with anything other than what it is intended for. Your profession will dictate your surface priorities. As an interior designer, I keep three items on my desk: 1) a task light, 2) a container that is filled with a highlighter, a pair of scissors, and my favorite pens and pencils, and 3) a small dish with paper clips and rubber bands. That’s it! These are the things that I reach for constantly throughout my day. Everyone’s professional demands and workspace needs are different, so be sure to tailor your worktable to meet those necessities.
Find storage solutions. Referencing the above, make sure you have mechanisms in place to keep your home organized. Neither family nor workspaces will benefit from clutter. Find storage solutions to meet your home and office needs. I like to keep a pedestal file with four or five drawers next to my desk—this gives me enough drawers to organize my workload by project or task and also holds personal items (like a stapler, ruler, notepad, etcetera), which are dedicated for professional use only. Keep another set of these items for personal use in another place in your home—this, too, will help segregate your spaces.
—36— JAN | FEB
Let there be light! I believe that happiness breeds good work, and natural light is one of the unsung keys to being happy. One of the silver linings to being out of the office setting is not having to sit beneath harsh, fluorescent lighting all day. Home lighting tends to be much softer—the warm tones of soft white bulbs, and varying lighting heights and sources, help facilitate the positive effects light can have on us. However, natural light is always the best—it helps brighten your mood and gives great energy. Pair it with a task lamp for optimal concentration.
Make it beautiful. Take advantage of not having to get permission to redecorate your office space now that it’s in your own home. Give yourself some inspiration while you work. Perhaps that means painting the room an invigorating or calming shade, papering an accent wall, or adding a pop of color to your ceiling. Maybe it can come in the form of a beautiful floor lamp or your favorite piece of art. It can even be a low bookcase with some of your cherished keepsakes. I have several house plants in unique pots around my home office—with regular tending, it’s gratifying to watch them grow and change daily. With dedicated space, minimized surface clutter, appropriate storage, perfect lighting, and unique personal touches, you’ll be able to maintain your home as a sanctuary and your home as an office. There will inevitably be times that one spills into the other, so reclaiming your space must be a priority when you work at home. Remember that there’s always tomorrow to make it better, so live in the moment and embrace the beautiful chaos that is working from home.

Always be yourself.
CLAUDIA GONZALES, PICAYUNE RANCHERIA OF CHUKCHANSI INDIANS CHAIRWOMAN COARSEGOLD, CALIFORNIA
C
hukchansi Gold Resort & Casino opened in 2003, but the story of our Tribe dates back thousands of years. Originally, the Tribe spanned the western slopes of the Sierra Nevadas and flourished in this beautiful territory. By 1900, life had changed dramatically. With the success of Chukchansi Gold, the Tribe realized economic independence, and through Chukchansi Sovereign Enterprises, we now employ more than 1,200 individuals and annually disburse roughly $50 million into the local economy.
WHAT I LOVE ABOUT MY PROFESSION As Tribal Chairwoman, I’m honored to help improve lives in our Tribal nation as a local and national advocate. I’m privileged by the opportunity to listen to and work for the people, provide leadership, expand our economic development and employment opportunities, and teach Chukchansi cultural ways with our Tribal community. OUR HISTORY The Chukchansi people were an original inhabitant of California. Throughout the years, we’ve continually focused on sustaining our culture and identity. One celebration of our culture is Pow Wow, held each October, where we honor our rich heritage through traditional prayer, dance, song, and food. WHY GIVING BACK IS SO IMPORTANT Giving is built into our culture. It’s a way of life—not an obligation. Our Tribe has always helped each other in hard times, and presented gifts to honor a significant event. Today that translates to the community support we provide from employment opportunities and economic impact to charitable donations.

THE MATHER METHOD
Love where you live.
LAURA MATHER, BROKER ASSOCIATE FRESNO, CALIFORNIA
T
he Mather Method takes the song and dance out of your home sale—whether you are selling or buying—and replaces it with something much more reliable: the art of marketing, versus just selling, and the science to back it up. My story could be much like your own. No entitlements, I have worked my way from entry-level property manager to a national Vice President of Sales and Marketing, to where I am now as one of Fresno’s top producers.
CAREER-DEFINING MOMENT The most memorable defining moment in my career, by far, was during our company's IPO (UCP, Inc.), where we rang the opening bell at the NYSE. Adding to that moment, being the only female on the podium. Now that I have transitioned from corporate America to being self-employed, the defining moments happen every time a family gets the keys to their new home. WHO MENTORED ME IN MY CAREER I was extremely fortunate to have had amazing mentors throughout my career. Two individuals invested in my success above all others. Sandra Wilson, Co-Owner of SAN MAR Properties, was an incredible female role model to me. She taught me how to manage people and processes with diligence and compassion. Rich Wathen, Principle of Wathen-Castanos, was also very influential. Learning the home building industry from one of Fresno's most respected professionals was one of the greatest blessings I could have received.

endi McLendonCovey is one of the funniest women alive and distinctly not Hollywood. The Long Beach native lives relatively under the radar, and yet her witty flair has left an indelible mark on the comedic style of this generation. Her story is one of persistence, a lesson in finding the right shoulder to lean on, and proof of why remaining true to an ever-evolving self is the recipe for contentment. The “Queen of Improv” began her journey at The Groundlings Theatre & School, a Los Angeles-based improvisation and sketch comedy theater famous for producing some of the biggest names in comedic show business. “Before I got married, I was trying to get into the business, but I didn’t know what I was doing, and I was trying to do it on the down low, because my parents were not thrilled about any of it.” By the time she got married to her husband Greg Covey, “he knew what I wanted to do and he said, ‘Well, why don’t you just try it. I think you can do it, so just try it! We’ll pay for your classes and just take it one step at a time. Maybe it’ll work out, maybe it won’t. But there’s nothing wrong with you trying it.’ That’s what I needed—I just needed to hear that.” She went through the program, with Greg there every step of the way. “He was paying for my costumes and my wigs and all this nonsense—all the expensive crap you need to get on stage anywhere.” Yet, his involvement didn’t stop there. “He would listen to me rehearse lines and I’d run sketches past him, everything. He was just so supportive,” and he loved watching the process.
—58— JAN | FEB
“This whole thing about ‘you have to have it all and you have to have it all at once.’ No you don’t. You can get up and do the best you can, every single day, and be proud with the progress you’re making, and do it again tomorrow. But you don’t have to have everything all at once! I don’t care what some influencer on Instagram is pretending to have.”
So did her in-laws. “It was kind of cool that they were on-board—it was kind of like a family affair. Like, I had a little cheerleading section and it was amazing … I needed that. We all need that,” she believes. “But, like I said, you don’t need it from everywhere. I needed it from my family and people very close to me because I knew they weren’t going to pull punches with me. One great thing about my family is they’re very honest, for better or worse,” she appreciates. “One of the big blessings of my life is that I had my husband and in-laws rooting for me, and eventually my parents came around.” Wendi attributes her success, in part, to the encouragement Greg has continually bestowed on her over the years, though she’s quick to clarify, “We are not a Hollywood couple, I just have to say. Like, we do the bare minimum of any of that stuff. We live outside of Hollywood for a reason!” When you listen to any of the interviews where Wendi talks about her husband, it’s evident that these two have figured out some secret to marital bliss, despite her reluctant tone. “I have no advice to give on how to make it last,” Wendi admits, “but all I can say is that if you can have fun doing nothing together, you’re going to be okay.”
M
uch of her improv material actually pulls from the humorous monotony of life’s daily routines. “That’s what life is mostly. Mostly life is very mundane, and there’s clogged toilets and relatives that get sick or whatever. If you can sit in a hospital waiting room with someone, you can stay married!” Her perspective points toward years of experience coupled with manifesting honesty. “My comedic approach has changed, in that, you have to tell the truth,” Wendi begins with a reflective tone. “I’ve been in quite a few improvised shows or movies. You always do what you’re directed to do, with a director and an editor involved. But the jokes work better for me if they come from a place of truth.” She claims that it’s all about relating. “How do I say this,” ponders Wendi, and you can hear the creative wheels turning in her head. “When someone gets into trouble and then tries to redirect, that’s funny, or trying
to get back to normal, that’s funny. Because the truth is just funnier than anything you could write,” as it’s easier for the audience to relate. “Those cringeworthy moments of when you’re trying to hold it all together and that trying works against you, that’s hysterical.” Of course, she divulges, “it’s not funny when you’re in that position, but when you’re playing it, it’s great.” In line with that comedic philosophy, Wendi today is perhaps best known for her role as family matriarch and stereotypical Jewish smother-mother Beverly Goldberg of ABC’s The Goldbergs. Long before the hit sitcom, her character Deputy Clementine Johnson on Reno 911! had audiences doubled over with her less-than-traditional law enforcement approach. Added to that, sprinkled throughout her career are countless guest appearances on numerous network television series. Wendi’s résumé boasts more than a handful of supporting roles in big-name movies. Since her breakout performance as Rita in the film Bridesmaids, she has appeared in major motion pictures like What to Expect When You’re Expecting, The Single Moms Club, Blended, Think Like a Man Too, Hello, My Name Is Doris, Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween, and What Men Want. Over the years, Wendi has also accumulated quite a collection of voice acting credits in animated shows, too, such as Pickle and Peanut, Bob’s Burgers, Mike Tyson Mysteries, Crossing Swords, Big City Greens, Puppy Dog Pals, and the upcoming Solar Opposites. “It’s not ever something that I went out and actively pursued—things just kind of started coming to me,” she recalls. “Thanks to animation, I’ve gotten to sing and do weird voices, which I love doing. I’m thrilled to get to do stuff like that—it’s just a completely different muscle to work.” Then there’s the departure from her trademark funny people parts; Wendi has been exploring some more serious characters as of late. As the lead role in Blush, an independent drama film featured at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, she garnered attention for her unrestrained performance as an obsessive-compulsive mom on the brink of emotionally unraveling.

On the other hand, her most recent film, Sylvie’s Love (released over the holidays), takes on an entirely different, heartwarming tone. “It’s a juicy, gorgeous, romantic love story that we need, that we want, with the beautiful backdrop of jazz music,” gushes Wendi. “It’s just dreamy! All the sets, the art direction, the costumes. So beautiful!” Wendi absolutely loved being on that set. Written, directed, and produced by powerhouse Eugene Ashe, “I hope he includes me in the next thing, because this is just a stunning movie and it did really well at Sundance—you know, for what that’s worth, because everything shut down right after,” she says with a sarcastic chuckle. In Sylvie’s Love, Wendi plays a Julia Child-like woman. “She has a cooking show in the early sixties, and she’s one way on-camera, and another way off-camera—very foul mouthed, smokes, blah blah blah,” the actress explains, “and Tessa Thompson comes in as a production assistant, and then ends up being the producer.” Thompson’s character Sylvie starts out working in a record store and climbs her way up the ladder into production, while Wendi’s character Lucy is a fun, comic relief within the film. “But it shows how she is kinda busting through glass ceilings and getting her life started,” she elaborates. Moreover, Sylvie’s Love addresses a viewpoint that has not yet been extensively explored in cinema. “It broadened my perspective, in that media-wise, like let’s see some love stories from people of color that are just love stories, without all kinds of horrible circumstances. I’m not saying that doesn’t exist—it absolutely does,” reiterates Wendi. “I think that’s something that’s an underlying issue within this industry. Not just, ‘let’s tell different stories,’ but let’s let other people tell their own stories. We don’t need white executives telling people of color how to tell their damn stories! And it also speaks to if you want it told right, you gotta write it yourself, and now is the time.”
A
ge brings with itself a level of experience and understanding that cannot be attained any other way. There’s also a do-it-yourself mentality that becomes increasingly more self-evident. Co-hosted with art director and producer Dfernando Zaremba, Wendi’s podcast Generation Ripe feels like an opportunity to reflect on and evolve with that ideal. “In your twenties and thirties, you’re kind of waiting for people to give you the go-ahead for things—kind of like how I was waiting for someone to give me the go-ahead to get my life started, even though I knew what I wanted to do since I was four years old,” Wendi assures. “After a certain point, you’re like, ‘Wait a minute… I’m over 40. I’m not dead. I could live another 60 years, theoretically. Do I want to keep waiting for people to give me the go-ahead? Or do I want to just take the bull by the horns and do it my damn self?’ Because the honest answer is good screenplays don’t get made, finished ones do. Finish something, and then worry about sending it out into the world.” Whether it’s starting a podcast, writing a screenplay, putting together your own bakery, “do it, and then adjust!” encourages Wendi. “There’s no awards given for good ideas that never get executed. Execute!” That’s good advice, at any age. “And, you are never too old to start anything!” she emphasizes. “That’s such a lie that people have told us
for so long! ‘Well, I’m too old.’ BS! Maybe you’re too old to play a 20-year-old, or to be on the women’s gymnastics team, but anything else, you’re not too old! Take that out of your head,” imparts Wendi. Allowing ourselves to experience that evolution is absolutely key to not just survival, but also sanity. We’ve seen that become increasingly evident in the manner in which the 2020 election just unfolded. “It seems like this phrase gets bandied about, but the middle class is truly tired of being lied to, constantly,” Wendi says. “Because we have social media, we can really take the temperature of the rest of the country in real time … and there is a certain section of the population that only gets their news from memes and headlines—true, and they are way far behind. But they are steadfast and they vote,” she offers, while also acknowledging that “this [past] year we reached a breaking point.”
I
n reference to the social unrest of today, “I really hand it to this generation of younger people, who started all of this. I mean, people have been fighting for years—this is not news. The younger generation, who a lot of people made fun of because, you know, they got participation trophies and things like that. But it’s those people who are saying, ‘Um, hey, it’s not okay that your son was killed and nothing ever happened. Let’s do something about it!’ Whereas my generation, it was just like, ‘Oh well, huh. That’s terrible, but what are you gonna do about it?’ We were very complacent,” Wendi concedes. “Now, you can’t hide from things because you can see it in real time.” We’re in for some major cultural changes, from sea to shining sea. Despite the shifting times, there’s a silver lining around the cloud of inequality that is worth noting. As of the 2020 elections, more women are serving in Congress than ever before in the history of the United States; the gender gap is closing, yet there is still immense pressure for modern women to be everything to everyone, all the time. “This whole thing about ‘you have to have it all and you have to have it all at once.’ No you don’t. You can get up and do the best you can, every single day, and be proud with the progress you’re making, and do it again tomorrow. But you don’t have to have everything all at once! I don’t care what some influencer on Instagram is pretending to have.” We know she’s right, yet it can still be difficult to shake decades-old ideologies. “Having it all is a line of BS that makes women feel terrible about themselves. It’s very overreaching, in that it makes women seem like they should all want the same things. And they don’t, and they shouldn’t,” Wendi comprehends with assured conviction. “Having it all, to me, means I can go to bed content every night. Maybe there’s some stuff that’s undone. Maybe my house is a wreck. That’s alright! It doesn’t really take that much to make me happy, and I think, at our core, we all are satisfied with a lot less.” Wendi goes on to further ask, “Are your kids happy? Are you content in the moment? Did you do the best you could today? When you go to sleep feeling content, you have it all.” Wise words. Life is meant to be lived, not fretted. Stand up for what you believe in. Be unapologetically yourself. Remember, there will be good days as well as not so great days. Yet, at the end of the day, life is a funny thing—don’t be afraid to laugh at it daily, and live each moment to the fullest extent.

Flowers speak a language of their own. If you aren’t fluent in the tongue, FLOWERBX is your Rosetta Stone for speaking in bouquets. FLOWERBX Founder and CEO Whitney Bromberg Hawkings learned this language rather quickly, as a young woman working as Tom Ford’s personal assistant approximately two decades ago. Now, she’s delivering that freshly cut understanding directly to doorsteps across the pond. FLOWERBX stands apart from other floral delivery services, in part, because it offers stems of a single variety. Single-varietal bouquets simply speak differently than mixed arrangements. “I have always found that less is more with flowers and that quality and freshness are everything,” professes Whitney. “We cut our flowers to order and offer only premium grade flowers; with perfect, fresh flowers, our signature packaging, vases, and ribbon, it’s impossible to go wrong.”

W hitney’s entrée to floral culture began with her career in Paris, where she worked for Tom Ford at Gucci, eventually becoming his Communications Director upon the launch of his eponymous label in 2005. It was apparent to her early on that flowers were the medium through which fashion’s elite communicated. “I came to learn who the flowers were from on the morning of a show before reading the card. Miuccia favoured pink roses, Karl white orchids, Calvin white calla lilies, and Anna white roses—all in single-stemmed bunches arranged beautifully and simply with no filler or fuss,” Whitney recalls, speaking to the power of flower personification. Yet, finding similar stems seemed to be a challenge for her—Whitney would trek to the flower market near her London home to purchase the same single-varietal bouquets found in her boss’s office because she simply could not find such arrangements elsewhere, and (despite their popularity in the fashion world) same-stem bouquets were difficult to order from florists. Whitney wanted a simple, fuss-free way to send and receive same-stem flowers online, leading her to source her own desire. After 19 years with Ford, Whitney made the bold decision to leave his side for this new venture. Founded in 2015, FLOWERBX is an online business built upon quality single-varietal flowers that can be bought and delivered to your door within 24 hours, revolutionizing the manner in which blooms make their way into your home or workplace. Traditionally, flowers are cut at the
growing farm before making their way to flower markets and, eventually, florists’ studios, entailing days of exposure, reducing the time they last in a vase. With FLOWERBX’s “order, cut, deliver, arrange” business model, the traditional mark-up, waste, and time lapse between these floral middlemen are eliminated, resulting in greatly reduced costs to consumers. Ford was one of Whitney’s first clients before the fledgling company took Europe by storm. FLOWERBX has expanded from its London base to over 20 countries around the world, manifesting Whitney’s ambition to be the first international flower brand. Despite being based in London, FLOWERBX is intuitively linked to the United States—Whitney is actually a Dallas native. Stateside, FLOWERBX launched in New York City in May of 2019 and made its West Coast debut this past September with the opening of its Los Angeles hub. In addition to its unique online offerings, FLOWERBX takes great pride in its bespoke services, supplying flowers for the likes of Chanel, Dior, Farfetch, Jimmy Choo, Louis Vuitton, and Vogue, amongst many other fashionable names; the company is able to marry its signature style with the essence of each brand in simple, floral grandeur. Expansion has now led to the introduction of FLOWERBX home fragrances, candles, and floral scissors, as well as plants, holiday home décor, gift cards, and subscriptions.

“Someone told me at the beginning of the pandemic that you don’t win the bike race on the downhill, but you win on the uphill. This metaphor has stuck with me, and I have tried to accelerate when the rest of the world has slowed down.”
During a time that many businesses have struggled, FLOWERBX has persevered. “I have tried to lead FLOWERBX through the pandemic with drive and compassion. While I am trying to make the business a commercial success and live up to our high investor expectations, I feel a deep sadness and sensitivity to all of the heartache and sadness around, so I have that at the forefront of all that we do,” shares Whitney. “That said, I have never believed so deeply in our mission of delivering love and beauty as it has never been so necessary. Someone told me at the beginning of the pandemic that you don’t win the bike race on the downhill, but you win on the uphill. This metaphor has stuck with me, and I have tried to accelerate when the rest of the world has slowed down.” Many view flowers as a luxury to be purchased only occasionally, yet FLOWERBX is thriving amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, turning that notion on its head. “Never before has a small thing of beauty done more for one’s mental health!” claims Whitney, who makes an excellent argument as to why freshly cut flowers should be considered essential rather than occasional. “Having fresh flowers or plants in one’s home or office is scientifically proven to lift one’s mood and enhance well-being. There is also no better way to stay connected or show your love than sending a gift of fresh flowers, as few things evoke the same level of emotion as a beautiful bunch of flowers.” Preferred blooms have a way of silently reflecting individuality. “I find it endlessly and wonderfully amusing how much one’s flower preferences say about their personality. From the deep romantic who loves passionate red roses, to the bold, design-loving classicist who favours architectural hydrangeas, there is a flower for every type of person and a type of person for every flower,” at every time of the year. FLOWERBX sources blooms in accordance with the seasons. “We have different sourcing, but always go straight to the growers, and always locally if possible,” shares Whitney. Embracing the floral offerings of a given season is one of the delights of displaying freshly cut flowers year-round. “Ranunculus and anemones are the cheeriest and chicest thing about January, and they lift my spirits endlessly when the holidays are over,” Whitney says of her favorite seasonal stems. “Ranunculus tide us over in the beauty department until the beginnings of peony season in the spring.”
Flowers tend to carry a feminine connotation, yet they play a distinct role in momentous occasions for humankind in general. “I think that old-fashioned notion that flowers are for girls is RUBBISH. Beauty is universal. Love is universal.” Whitney innately understands how flowers transcend gender roles and expectations. “I don’t know a man that isn’t happy to receive flowers; but also, to be the recipient of the love and sentiment conveyed by the flowers. I hope that FLOWERBX can be disruptive in its business model but also disruptive in its ideology and undo the notion that ‘flowers are for girls’ or ‘men buy women flowers.’” Upon receiving your bouquet, Whitney recommends the following measures: “Remove any foliage that would be below the waterline to avoid contaminating the water. Re-cut the stems at a 45° angle to encourage maximum water absorption. Place the stems in a clean vase with freshly drawn, lukewarm water as soon as possible. Ensure the stems are positioned out of direct sunlight, away from drafts or heating and avoid extreme temperatures. Change the water regularly to keep the flowers and branches happy and healthy. Please use the flower food to prolong life. In the absence of flower food, a drop or two of bleach will help.” Working with single-varietal stems beautifully simplifies bouquet composure, yet vase arrangement can be a challenge for some. “To create the optimal shape, I would leave a couple of inches between the neck of the vase and the bloom with a small amount of foliage forming a ‘collar’ around the head of the flower,” Whitney advises novices in flower arrangement. “Make sure that the flowers in the centre of the arrangement are slightly taller so that the arrangement doesn’t have a ‘flat top’ but rather a beautiful domed shape.” Harkening back to her time spent alongside Ford, Whitney’s credentials as a tastemaker and decades’ worth of experience in the high-end fashion and luxury goods industry, have facilitated a loyal following of, and close relationships with, prestigious brands, press, and influencers, yet her blooms command their own accolades. Quality and convenience are at the core of FLOWERBX, who also understands the impact of busy lifestyles; with their unique delivery service, customers can choose what suits their needs best from the Same Day, Next Day, Pre-12, and Click & Collect delivery options, depending on their location. Visit www.flowerbx.com to discover what floral cheeriness is currently in season, and don’t hesitate to share that delight with your loved ones!

Prioritizing comfy doesn’t necessarily mean frumpy, especially for the stay-at-home mom on the go. Achieve pragmatic balance with structured pieces that layer easily with relaxed clothing. Opt for a button-down that makes wrinkles look purposeful, and complete that undone feel with a strategic tuck on one side. Vegan leather trousers make the look polished yet practical. 5
