LETTER from the

E

EDITOR

very issue of CVLUX brings something new and exciting, and this one is no exception. I am especially proud of this Jan|Feb Edition for a myriad of reasons. Let’s begin with the business end of the company. This January, we are rolling out additional, new newsstand locations throughout the Central Valley, increasing our local distribution. This is due to the overwhelming support of our advertisers and readers, and Donna and I are so proud of everyone who has helped grow the publication to the place we are now. Thank you so much for all your support over the years—it is overwhelming at times. This issue highlights our annual Luxury Awards. We have worked hard to change up the format for this year’s event, as we celebrate the start of our sixth year in business, making this an evening you won’t want to miss. There will be a dinner on the 25th of January at TorNino’s Banquets in Fresno, California. A portion of this year’s proceeds will be donated to Made For Them, a local organization that is near and dear to our hearts. The 2019 nominees are posted in the Luxury Awards section of the magazine beginning on page 14, so be sure to check out all the businesses and community members who are helping to better the Central Valley and its surrounding areas. For more information regarding this year’s event, please visit www.cvlux.com.

This edition’s cover features three of our favorite local ladies: Alma Wolverton, Dina Juve, and Hannah Serimian. These Women of Influence are shaping the direction of our community on a daily basis, each with their own particular flare for life. Photographed by the multi-talented Randy Haron, this feature is a must read! You can learn more about each woman, their lives, and their businesses starting on page 45. On the multi-media front, you may notice some changes to our website. This year we will be adding a more in-depth digital version of each issue. This is just another way we intend to engage our readers beyond the print edition of the publication. Expect these changes to be rolled out by late spring, just in time for our annual Home & Garden Issue. So let this 2019 New Year be one for the record books, and thank you again for all your continued love and support. Happy 6th Birthday, CVLUX! Cheers,

David

SHAKE +STIR HOSTED AT THE LIME LITE Managing Editor Lauren Barisic Photographer Don Dizon

T

he Lime Lite Restaurant & Lounge is a Fresno tradition. And its recently renovated outdoor patio was the perfect setting to hold Shake+Stir’s milestone tenth edition. In celebration of the New Year, Gina Jelladian, Alma Wolverton, Erin Goldfarb, Laura Thompson, and Ashley Hyatt joined CVLUX’s Donna Ensom in ushering in 2019 with a sampling of The Lime Lite’s latest farm-fresh menu revamp. “What are your resolutions for the upcoming year?” Donna prompted the crowd. A consensus to slow down and enjoy life and family was mutual as the ladies sampled four cocktails, six appetizers, and a two-part dessert. Count on this oldie-but-goodie Fresno landmark to keep pulling out new tricks as the year unfolds. This past spring, The Lime Lite’s patio underwent a major renovation. Lime Lite goers may not have been thrilled about construction closure, but the results were certainly worth any sacrifice. Expansive windows now enclose the patio, allowing for views of newly planted trees, and grey tones are warmed with sensual lighting. Tucked behind a humble façade just west of Palm Avenue on Shaw in Fresno, The Lime Lite is now mainly open for dinner. Owner Brandon Smittcamp recently axed lunch during the week, but you can grab a bite on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3. And the restaurant is still closed on Sundays. Doors open at 3 p.m. for Happy Hour until 6 o’clock Monday through Friday. Dinner is served from 5 to 9:30 Monday through Wednesday, and until 10 o’clock on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights.

—18— JAN | FEB

First out was the Sweet Cider Margarita. The concoction of Don Julio tequila, freshly squeezed orange juice, and organic apple cider is served in a glass kissed with cinnamon sugar. Erin elaborated, “You can tell it’s a margarita, but with more oomph and zip!”

The best of two worlds come together in the Poke Tacos. King salmon, Asian pear, wasabi slaw, and teppanyaki sauce are cradled in a fried wonton shell. “Oh my gosh…I love this taco!” Gina adamantly exclaimed. If you like spicy poke, this is a holy grail item.

Closely behind was the Parisian Gnocchi. What makes it “Parisian” is the use of flour instead of a potato base. Pan-seared with seasonal vegetables and a brown butter sauce, it can easily be made an entrée with extra veggies. “I’ll put this one in front of David [Manning]!” our serving hostess Noelle said, knowing full well how much CVLUX’s Editor in Chief loves this dish.

Though it may sound like a strictly cold weather drink, the fresh rosemary and thyme infused bourbon in the Maple Bourbon Sour make it particularly intriguing. Alma declared that she “loved this one! It goes down easy but feels luxurious.” You’ll feel the urge to “sip it from a Mason jar on a porch overlooking rolling hills,” said Laura. This grown-up lemonade features the traditional freshly squeezed lemon juice, but the maple syrup gives it a special country touch.

The 1964 cocktail is named for the establishment year of The Lime Lite. Vanilla bean and pear infused vodka is mixed with lemon juice, and floated with prosecco. “You’d think the vanilla bean would make it too sweet,” but Ashley liked that it actually induced a pucker. Wedding guru Gina identified that, “It feels like it was made for a wedding shower. Women will love this because it is a perfectly mixed drink for a lazy afternoon.”

Though called Spice Crusted Lamb Chops, they are, in shape, a pop— perfect for sophisticated appetizer snacking. “Smokey, spicy, and so tender,” mused Alma. Garnished with a roasted red pepper tapenade, they are served encircling a generous dollop of garlic sauce that’ll surely disappear.

Remember how incredible The Lime Lite’s fried chicken was? The Chicken Fried Quail is even better. “It’s sophisticated fried chicken! Southern hospitality in a bite!” Laura described the dish, whose bacon sausage stuffing is unexpected yet wonderfully complimentary alongside black pepper local honey and fried herbs.

Once you have The Lime Lite’s “Smore,” you won’t want the other anymore. Alma pointed out that everyone literally smiled as the dessert was set down on the table! A dark chocolate brownie is baked with a graham cracker crust, topped with coffee ice cream, and a spoonful of Kahlua sauce that tastes like fancy marshmallow crème.

Ketel One vodka is muddled with cilantro and freshly squeezed lemon and lime juices, and house-made simple syrup in the Lime Lite Martini, which is served with a half-sugared rim. Ashley like that “the cilantro is an unexpected twist” that isn’t overpowering.

Rather drink your dessert? Order a Lime Lite After—it’s a restaurant classic that has stood the test of time. Bailey’s, Chambord Liqueur, Kahlua, and cream are blended to make this adult milkshake. “This truly is the ultimate perfect ending to a wonderful meal.” Ashley knows what she’s talking about—her shirt literally said But first, cocktails!

The Lime Lime’s version of Surf and Turf consists of grilled, Korean-style tri-tip (that is literally fork-tender) accompanied by tempura shrimp doused in garlic ponzu sauce, garnished with scallions. “If I hadn’t read the menu I’d have thought it was filet,” Erin revealed with surprise. If you’re a bruschetta fan, consider the Baked Burrata “next level,” Erin appropriately professed. The Lime Lite’s Arrabiata sauce features roasted red chili peppers, Calabrian chilies, and pickled Fresno chilies. Served in a little pot, steaming hot with melted burrata, old school patrons will appreciate the accompanying wood grilled bread—an expansion on the fried bread that you could only ask for if you were in the know.

Ironically timed, Donna asked the ladies what their fitness goals for the year were as everyone sat stuffed to the brim. Slowing down to enjoy the little moments fits seamlessly with another concept the ladies had in common— being physically active with kids, husbands, and girlfriends. From Peloton bikes, all types of yoga, running, and being outdoors in general, a theme of integrated wellness immerged as the night’s common denominator—we eat with our families and friends, why not work out with out with them? And as 2019 buds, bear in mind that making The Lime Lite your cheat meal will be well worth the extra cardio.

Nothing makes a woman more beautiful than the belief that she is beautiful. DR. KATHLEEN BEHR

A Day at the Draycott —20— JAN | FEB

Features Editor Marissa Hermer Photographer Jake Ahles

I

’ve learned a lot about home in my years. About what it really means, and how it’s less of a place and more of a feeling you create alongside the people you love. And, of course, as a humble home cook and (now) restaurant owner, I’ve learned how much food plays a role in that.

For a long time, my home was Southern California, on the sunny, windswept coast where I was born and raised. During my childhood, home was defined by the avocados we picked off my grandmother’s tree and the vegetables we harvested from our backyard garden. Home meant regular trips to the Newport Beach docks for freshly caught fish. Or navel oranges to mark the start of yuletide festivities, my parents toasting with Christmas mimosas while we kids were relegated to the freshly squeezed juice. Later, as an adult, I moved to New York, where I made a home amidst a newfound world of elegant fine-dining establishments and scrappy, impossibly addicting food trucks. It wasn’t until I moved to London, however, that the meaning of home shifted, becoming fuller with each new, cherished addition in my life. First was my husband, Matt, who I met at a dinner party over a vegetarian course that, as a born-and-bred Brit, he wasn’t exactly keen on. Soon we fell in love, and as a restaurateur, he introduced me to an industry that thrilled and excited me. As a Brit, he led me into a culture and a country that I admired with passion.

—22— JAN | FEB

As we began to build a family together, home changed. It became the sodden streets of Chelsea after one of London’s many rainfalls, the local market where we would wander every Sunday with baskets in hand, and our family kitchen, where the comforting smells of a traditional English breakfast or Irish stew enticed anyone nearby to venture in for a taste. As much as I loved London, with its rich tradition and cozy pubs, there was a part of me that was still very much California, the sun-drenched land of my memory. So I brought a bit of that home to England, cooking for my family in a way that reflected my American roots as we put down new ones in London. I made shepherd’s pie with sweet potatoes, and bread pudding with sourdough (which now, hopefully, you’ll make too!). There was even a new California-inflected play on eggs Benedict, with a cashew butter hollandaise and quinoa pancakes. Over the course of a decade, I happily built a new home for my family using elements of my old one, the way you might tailor a wedding dress with lace from an inherited gown. That all changed, though, with the birth of our third child, our darling little Sadie. Following what turned out to be a traumatic pregnancy, Matt and I realized that maybe home should have a new meaning once again. Maybe, with this darkness behind us, we should be near family, where the kids so noticeably would bask in the coastal sunshine during summer holidays. Maybe cooking with California should now take shape in California. Maybe it was time to return to my roots. After we packed up our lives and moved halfway around the world to LA, I felt adrift—a bit of culture shock even. Here I was, back in the land that raised me, back surrounded by avocados and citrus trees. I was physically home. Yet why did I feel in some way unmoored?

It prompted me to consider this idea of home once again—what it truly meant for my family and me. It was during this time that a dear friend of mine offered some sorely needed advice. To make our new city feel like home, she told me to form routines that were familiar. We had gone to the market every Sunday morning back in London, a weekly tradition. Heeding her advice, we sought out the local farmers market and started going every week. I turned back to that steadfast British comfort of afternoon tea, savoring the cup I brewed for myself each day. Roasts and puddings continued to appear on our table, bolstered by fresh California ingredients, but familiar all the same. Little by little, LA started to feel like home again, with a welcomed UK varnish. The process ultimately inspired our next project, our next step. Matt and I decided to create a destination embodying the cultural mash-up we now call home. And with that, The Draycott was born. An anchoring hub for our new community, blending all the bits and pieces that make up our home, centered around food. The Draycott marries everything we love about LA—the farmfresh ingredients, the year-long bounty of produce, the unhurried sensibility—with everything we miss about London. It’s a place for families and friends, the quick casual cocktail, the four-hour dinner, the mid-day business lunch, and all joyous celebrations thereafter. It’s a restaurant built on the foundations of our home, and one that we hope becomes a piece of home for each of our diners and neighbors, as well. In the end, home is what you make of it, with the food on your plate and loved ones around the table. It’s perhaps one of the best lessons I’ve learned. And, perhaps, the clearest I’ve been on my own definition of “home” in a quite some time.

Sourdough Bread-and-Butter Pudding Served with a Salted Caramel Sauce Sourdough Bread-and-Butter Pudding Ingredients 1 loaf day-old sourdough (I like to leave the crust on, but you can remove it if you want a softer texture to your pudding) 2 tbs. unsalted butter ½ cup raisins 3 peaches (stones removed, sliced) 1 cup plus 3 tablespoons whole milk ⅔ cup light cream ⅔ cup heavy cream 4 large eggs ½ cups coconut sugar 2 large vanilla beans (split, seeds scraped) 1 tbs. ground cinnamon Directions • •

• •

• •

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Slather the bread (on both sides!) with the butter—the more generous you are, the better it will taste. Slice the sourdough into roughly inch-thick pieces and fill your baking dish of choice (a wide, low dish usually works best). Keep in mind that the bread shrinks once the custard mixture is added, so it is okay if the sourdough pieces overfill the dish. Scatter a handful of raisins evenly across the base. Arrange some of the peach slices across the base. Arrange the next base bread layer over the layer of raisins and peaches, followed by a layer of peach wedges—continue this until you have used all of the bread, raisins, and peaches. Whisk together the milk, creams, eggs, sugar, vanilla seeds, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture over the layered bread. Gently press down with your hand so the bread absorbs the liquid. Let sit for an hour. Once the bread is drenched and ready, scatter a final layer of peaches on top of the bread and sprinkle with raisins. Place in the oven for 35 minutes.

Salted Caramel Sauce Ingredients ½ cup sugar 3 tbs. heavy cream 1 tbs. softened butter Pinch of sea salt Directions • •

• •

In a large saucepan over medium heat, heat the sugar. Gently swirl the pan as the sugar begins to melt, but do not stir. Once the sugar has turned a dark amber color, remove it from the heat and carefully pour in the cream. Using a whisk, begin to stir the caramel while adding the softened butter until everything is mixed together. Sprinkle in the salt and whisk well. Pour into a serving container until ready to serve with the pudding.

High Profile Genelle Taylor Kumpe Features Editor Ann T. Sullivan Whitehurst Photographer Chance James

Born and raised in Salinas, California, Genelle Taylor Kumpe left one Valley for another to study business at Fresno State—a pathway she knew she wanted to pursue since she was 15 as a member of the Future Business Leaders of America in high school. College was the catalyst for Genelle’s impeccable work ethic and giving 110% of herself with whatever she’s involved in. “I lived, breathed, and dreamt everything Craig School of Business. I took classes there, I worked there as a student assistant in the Undergraduate Advising Office, my roommate and best friend in college worked in the Dean’s Office, we were both involved in student leadership, and we even house/pet sat for professors for some extra cash.”

—38— JAN | FEB

S

hortly after college, Genelle started working for a community organization that offered a program to train and teach people how to start their own businesses. Having been a collaborative project with Fresno State, Genelle transitioned over and started working back at her alma mater. During her tenure there, she was an integral part of the creation of the Lyles Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and developed and led programs that taught people from kindergarten to adulthood about the importance of innovation and creativity and, with the right tools, that they can be in control of their own destiny. “My favorite part of working at the Lyles Center was working with young people and being able to physically see the switch flip on in a student who went from having low self-esteem to discovering their passion and believing in themselves that they can do anything they set their mind to.” While at Fresno State, Genelle found herself bitten by the “entrepreneurial bug” and partnered in three different entrepreneurial endeavors herself. “My business endeavors ran the gamut, from a Chinese restaurant, to an afterschool program for elementary schools, to bringing the ever-sopopular blowout services to the Fresno market.” Genelle was always busy and thrived in that environment. Being intrigued by starting new things, she took part in starting a different kind of Rotary Club for those young professionals that wanted to network with other like-minded individuals in their community. That Rotary Club is where Genelle met her husband of 14 years, Matt Kumpe. They have two beautiful children, Aiden, who is 13, and Ava, who is 10. “Having children absolutely changed my life. I realized just how selfish I was and that life is no longer just about me. I have a responsibility to be the absolute best person I can be, and to use my skills and talents to help create change in the world. I want my kids to grow up in a better community.” After losing her dad to cancer in 2011, Genelle’s belief that we only have one life and never know what tomorrow will bring became a stark reality. Her drive to create change in the community delved deeper and soon another opportunity to serve presented itself. After 14 years at Fresno State, Genelle left behind her secure state job with a pension for a higher calling and became the Executive Director at the Marjaree Mason Center (MMC), Fresno County’s only dedicated shelter and support services for those affected by domestic violence. “The support of my family to take this leap was everything to me. I knew it was going to not only be a steep learning curve, but that it was truly eye-opening, ground-shaking work and it wasn’t going to be easy.” The affirmation that people are a product of their environment ran through and through during this time. What Genelle saw and learned during her three years at the MMC changed her life forever. “You can’t turn back once you’re made aware of the trauma people endure in their lives. The ability to make a dramatic difference in a person’s life is real. But you have to be able to meet people where they are, not blame them for not knowing, but teach them the skills and give them the tools to be able to have choices for a better life.” On she went to teach soft skills/ employability skills at Fresno City College, which allowed her to slow down and smell the roses with her family for a bit. Since sitting still is not Genelle’s strong suit, she soon was presented with yet another opportunity she couldn’t pass up. Genelle’s current role is Chief Operating Officer of the Fresno Business Council (FBC) and Executive Director of the San Joaquin Valley Manufacturing Alliance. “I

oversee operations for the Fresno Business Council and its manufacturing initiative, the San Joaquin Valley Manufacturing Alliance. FBC created the Alliance to support their goals of improving social and economic growth in the Central Valley.” This opportunity was made for her as it takes all of her life’s experiences and rolled it up into one. “And, I get to choose people to walk alongside me. The FBC is looking for the next generation of leaders to embrace the lessons learned over the last 25 years and go forward as community stewards. We believe a great community—one that provides opportunities for prosperity and wellbeing to everyone—depends upon informed, engaged, enlightened, and effective citizens. It requires all of us to remember we are a citizen first, not our day job or single interest. We are all responsible for the quality of life in our community.” With an aim to create economic and social change with a lasting impact on Fresno’s community, the Fresno Business Council combines its collective passion and intellectual capital to form strategic solutions for local issues. The Council’s CEO and board take a leadership role in executing their strategies, and have been the force behind major local initiatives involving education, land use, workforce development, and more. Among the many projects incubated and launched by the FBC is the San Joaquin Valley Manufacturing Alliance, which provides support for local manufacturers through elevating the workforce pipeline, educating the public on the industry, building constructive relationships, and hosting the annual Valley Made Manufacturing Summit. Genelle enjoys the hustle of balancing life as a wife, mom, and community steward. In her “free time,” she volunteers to continue fueling her passion for those things that create change in our community. In addition to being the President of the Made For Them Board of Directors, a social enterprise combatting human trafficking, Genelle is a current member in the La Feliz Guild and was a founding member of the La Visionaria Guild, both of which are non-profit organizations whose mission is to engage in creative and innovate ways to raise funds, advocate for children, and to promote goodwill for Valley Children’s Hospital. She also discovered her competitive nature by participating in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Man & Woman of the Year campaign. Together with her husband and rock star team of friends, Genelle broke the Central California Woman of the Year record and raised over $203,000 during the 10-week campaign. She said yes to the nomination and took the challenge on in honor of her dad, and had the opportunity of dedicating a cancer research grant in his name. “I truly feel as if I am walking the path that has been created for me. I am blessed beyond belief to have my family, friends, and life’s work that fulfills my passion and feeds my soul. I believe our generation and the generation after ours, and after theirs, and so on, has the ability to move mountains. In a world of disruption and chaos, I see an incredible shift in our community’s beliefs that we can be better. Call me a dreamer, but take a moment to see my vision. Imagine living in a community where everyone is and feels valued. Where people work together to ensure that every child is safe and offered opportunities to learn and decide what kind of life they want to create. Together we can inspire the spirit of community in every neighborhood, classroom, worksite, and place of worship, and create an extraordinary culture—one that delivers the outcomes everyone wants: inclusive opportunity, prosperity and wellbeing.” Imagine Fresno as this community.

5 TIPS

To Make 2019 Your Best Year

EVER! Features Editor Holly Caplan

This time of year is magical. Our days are enveloped in glitter, lights, and music. We attend the work parties, spend time with family, and over-indulge on food and cocktails (I do, at least). All the December jubilation is momentum for the big crescendo of January 1st. The fireworks go off, the calendar is reset, and our next 365 days have yet to be told. This is an exciting time because we welcome what is fresh and new. This is the time to reset, reboot, and consider what you want out of your career in 2019. Even though our coming days are unwritten, you can plan your goals and activities to manifest what you want to happen now!

1. Take time to reflect.

As your work year begins, take time to do a personal assessment. We all have strengths and areas of opportunity. Consider the past year’s accomplishments and challenges. Think about what worked well for you and what did not. Maybe you had a project that didn’t go as well as you would have liked, or perhaps there was a situation with a coworker you could have handled better. Whatever it is, think about what would you do differently today? Answering these questions forces you to be honest with yourself and gives you the awareness and ability to guide your coming year. Begin to practice your new ways and watch your professional growth soar.

2. Write it into action.

I’m a big believer of writing into action. Once you write something down on paper, it is a commitment to yourself, and only you are accountable. Write into action this year by writing down your professional goals for 2019. Think about what you want to achieve in your near future. It could be a promotion, obtaining new clients, or even attending a specific training class. Document your goals by putting a timeline together by quarter to highlight your planned activities for the upcoming year and watch your success follow.

3. Write your own review.

Be proactive and write your own yearly review. Highlight all of your achievements and contributions to the company from the previous year and schedule a meeting with your manager to discuss them. This facilitates an open dialogue and shows that you are reflective, engaged, and want to continue to grow and develop. Your boss will appreciate this, and it will leave her with a good vibe when it comes time for her to write yours!

4. Plan your vacation time now.

Don’t procrastinate! It is easy to let this slip by, especially when we are just coming back to work from the holiday season. But, put your vacation days on your calendar now! Schedule for spring, summer, and the end of the year. Even if you don’t know where you will be going yet, just get the time on your schedule. Doesn’t matter if you go to a beach or do a staycation. Planning for vacation now helps you ensure your work life balance and you will be more productive and fresh year-round. Don’t deny yourself of this.

5. Reward yourself.

Admittedly, I just started doing this in my work life. I never let myself experience a reward for my hard work as I was already on to the next thing. I didn’t allow myself the space to feel positive from a deal I had closed or landing a new account. The product of this cycle was the constant dwelling in what I had not yet accomplished, which led to negative thinking. Thus, I have learned to reward myself and I encourage others to do the same. Your reward may come in the form of drinks with friends, a new bag, or just sitting in silence. Regardless, this year, reward yourself and allow yourself the positivity. Do you know what positivity leads to? More positivity. 2018 is in the rearview mirror. Let’s welcome 2019 by deciding how your goals and rewards will reveal themselves—you have the power to make it your best year ever! Alma WOLVERTON

—50— JAN | FEB

S

Rational. Spiritual. Fearless.

ince the age of 14, Alma Wolverton had a feeling that fashion was her fate. “For some unexplained reason, I always knew that owning a store(s) was part of my destiny.” The personal stylist and owner of two Fresno boutiques followed an unconventional route to where she is today. Though Wolverton wanted to attend the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising right out of high school, she wound up going to Fresno State and obtained her BA in Social Work Education before venturing into retail. “Despite my path, retail and fashion were two things that I closely followed.”

While the relationship between motherhood and career is a balancing act, Wolverton sees a direct link in how her professional performance influences her boys. “There is a certain pressure that comes with being a mother, a stylist, a wife, etc. I hope that in the process of working, my children are learning the sacrifice and discipline it takes to be a successful entrepreneur.” She learned that from her parents, who were also successful entrepreneurs who instilled discipline and an unmatched work ethic in their daughter. “I hope that my children also learn the value of hard work, embrace good virtues, become honest, respectful, and moral young men.”

In 2013, that passion manifested into her first brick and mortar—pum bum society™ sells contemporary women’s apparel, located in the Shops at River Park. Just around the corner, MANTRA by AHL-mə™, which offers athletic apparel for women and men, opened less than a year ago. And if you’d rather hand over the job of dressing your person to someone else entirely, Wolverton offers personal fashion styling services for women and men.

Giving back is also important to Wolverton, which lead to her partnership with the Marjaree Mason Center (MMC). Her personal styling services also include closet purges. “Items that have been gently used and/or no longer wanted by the client are conveniently taken away from their home and then donated to the MMC … When I donate my time to those in need, it yanks me out of what I know and what I am familiar with. In return, I am given a deeper understanding of why community, people, spirituality…matter. My blessings become a little more clear.”

Each business venture evolved from and built upon a void Wolverton saw in the greater Fresno area market. “I began with one store (pum bum society™) and in the beginning I was working my own store.” Through that process, she got to meet a lot of people—many of whom were clients who would request that she come out to their homes for individual assistance. “That is how the personal styling service developed. We had nothing like it in Fresno and there was a real need. I had no idea that I was naturally gifted in that area or that the demand would be as great as it continues to be today.” She now serves both women and men all over Fresno and its surrounding communities. And then there’s MANTRA. “2018 was the year of MANTRA. There was a lot of research, patience and risk involved in getting MANTRA up and running.” Being her second store to open within 5 years, and working in tandem with her personal styling business in full force, Wolverton focuses on the long term. “My only goal professionally is to see my businesses grow and sustain itself amidst the constant ebbs and flows of retail. We want to remain relevant and also continue to provide our customers with a unique experience [at MANTRA].” When it comes to family, Wolverton’s big picture takes on a different form. “Personally, I am trying to be more present and being more intentional with my time as I strive for, and truly value, a balanced life.” Having always prioritized family despite her professional goals, she attributes her ability to maintain this balance to her amazing staff. “I have been so lucky with my employees at both my stores … Team work does indeed make the dream work.” So does having a partner in crime. “I have been blessed by an amazing husband.” Wolverton is referring to Joshua, to whom she has been married for nine years. The couple have two boys together, Roman, 8, and William, 6. Even though “my kids are by far the greatest gift from God,” she said, “Being a working mother is tough.” Becoming a mother has humbled Wolverton, who believes her levels of understanding and compassion have been amplified by the experience—skills she believes have come in handy as an entrepreneur.

For Wolverton, that means understanding that every day is a gift—a chance to grow, to believe, and to learn. In turn, she believes, we find happiness. “Happiness is in all the little things we often take for granted: a hot cup of coffee, the first breath of air we breathe when we wake up in the morning, good health, meeting new people, being physically able to work out, and the quality time to spend with loved ones.” This mentality stems from times when Wolverton struggled with her health, leading her to reflect deeply on what it meant to have it. “When I was laying there on a hospital bed … I realized how lucky I was to have the ability to run, eat certain foods, and be back on my feet. Health is everything.” God, family, and forgiveness are at the center of her life mantra. Admittedly a slight germophobe, Wolverton believes in giving her body special attention, including eating right. She tries to sage herself and surrounding environment almost daily, and goes full force on things outside her comfort zone. “I take different routes to work every day because I get bored … I like making small connections with strangers because it keeps life interesting. I love reading, exercising, traveling, and the outdoors.” Obviously this entrepreneur has the wellness thing figured out… So, what’s her indulgence? “Cake... for breakfast!” Through her largely creative work, Wolverton is indeed making an impact on society. “I love how fashion makes other people feel, because how we make people feel DOES MATTER. I want everyone to feel confident and beautiful in what they wear,” in every aspect of daily life. As an entrepreneur, a buyer, a stylist, a wife, and a mom, her many roles require various personality traits, but it seems her compassionate heart is a major motivator. “The world needs more love and we have to fix our hearts and be better to one another. We all need to experience an awakening and not contribute to spiritual deafness. We shouldn’t be apologetic for who we are because we are all in this human race together. Let’s always encourage one another in whichever path we are choosing to live as we pass one another. Uniting and being one is of utmost importance.”

Dina JUVE

—54— JAN | FEB

A

Expert. Loving. Entrepreneur.

s Co-Founder of FitnessSocial® Studio in Fresno, Dina Juve is a transformation expert and weight loss specialist. Childhood struggles with health lead to her desire to get well, and a passion for fitness and overall wellness emerged. Today, Juve’s repertoire stretches far beyond her studio, established in 2012. She uses her online platforms to meet several types of health and fitness needs. Juve also designs wellness plans privately tailored to her clients’ special circumstances, recognizing that everyone’s lifestyle and journey is unique—her plans are truly a mind, body, and soul experience. DinaJuve.com™ offers programs for losing weight and detoxing. Having graduated from Chopra University, she’s certified as an Ayurveda teacher. Her Underneath the Fat™ blog covers everything from recipes and meditation to athleticwear, while the online Underneath the Fat® program deals with the emotional layers that prevent weight loss. Juve’s Real Fast Food Club™ takes the guesswork out of grocery lists and meal planning by offering readers recipes made with five ingredients or less—lighter in calories, but still full of flavor. Juve’s workouts can even be viewed on the Playbook™ app. It all seems to come naturally to Juve, who is living proof that her methods work. “I’ve always felt different. At age six, my juvenile arthritis kept me from being a normal kid. And I was overweight, which led to bullying and depression. I found myself at 202 lbs. pre-pregnancy. After I had my son, I knew things had to change.” So, at 21, she started doing workout videos in her living room and implementing small food changes. Within a few years, she was healthy and finally happy. It wasn’t until Juve met her husband, John, that she developed her personal journey, to become educated on healthy living, into a viable business. “When I met my husband, I was a Brand Marketing Director. Our marriage gave me the freedom to decide what I actually wanted to do. It was time to help others live the life they wanted, in the body they desired.” It is her belief that the body can achieve whatever the mind believes. “Because of this, I was able to lose 90lbs and keep it off. I made the choice to put my mind, body, and soul first.” This all-encompassing journey has become her legacy. “It’s guided me to my destiny. It is my duty, as a human being, to help create and encourage a healthier and happier world in which love (every kind) truly conquers all.” And for those who are receptive, “I feel very confident I can help anyone, who is ready, reach their body, fitness, health, nutrition, and overall wellness goals.” What was the beginning, on a professional level, for Juve? “I started by taking every cutting edge and highly acclaimed course in nutrition and fitness. But most programs only had roughly a 7% success rate. Kettlebell changed my outlook on body fitness.” She considers herself a forever student and still continues her education as advances are made, learning more about mentality and meditation so that she can teach others how to implement mindset into their daily lives. “23 years of hard work as a fitness trainer, weight loss specialist, meditation teacher, wellness entrepreneur, lead me to proudly say: I am a transformation expert.” Juve’s accomplishments have been recognized at the national level. Being featured as one of five national trainers on the cover of Women’s Health magazine in 2015 is validation that she is one of the best in the business. “If

you would have asked me at 21 if that was possible, I would have laughed. It would have been so far-fetched. At 41, after four pregnancies, losing 90 pounds (pre-pregnancy), being featured on the cover of a national magazine, and being able to share my story and help others was pretty surreal. At 44 I feel better than at 21.” That honor included two appearances on the Today show. Since 2016, she’s been a Women’s Health magazine Action Hero, which highlights women creating change in the world. And in 2017, she was the first woman in Fresno selected by Saint Agnes Medical Center for the Spirit of Women Award. Being a fitness specialist, Juve’s work enriches the lives of her clients daily, by giving them the freedom to enjoy their health, but that isn’t enough for her. “Giving back to others and helping them overcome something makes me jump for joy (literally)! That is the only time I jump, lol.” Juve holds a number of charities close to her heart, which have stemmed from both her work and personal experiences. “I’m very lucky that my partnerships with incredible, giving companies have allowed me to be involved with so many charities across the globe.” FitnessSocial® Studio makes it their mission to give back every quarter to a local charity. “Some charities come to us and some are based on client recommendations. We have also done social media requests, which educates us in areas that need additional help. Personally, after losing my daughter [Anna], Hinds Hospice, Angel Babies holds a special place in my heart. I felt alone and didn’t realize how many others had gone through the same heartbreaking experience.” Becoming a mother made Juve want to leave our world a better place for her boys, Tommy, 26, Tyler, 13, and Trevor, 11. “I want my children to see me laugh, travel, love what I do, take care of my body, teach others to live the life they want and without feeling guilty, give back to others, and to know that you can change your destiny. If you are really passionate about what you do and love, fight with all you have because it’s worth it.” She hopes her work ethic and motivation to give back to society is something her children will take with them. “If they love what they do, it won’t feel like work.” But it’s also important to “make time to play … No one else determines your happiness. When you hit a roadblock, find a way around. Fight for what you love. Love with all your heart, even if it’s broken. Your health’s your wealth, so take good care of your mind, body, soul.” When it comes to the personal/professional juggling act, Juve’s outlook reflects her acceptance of whatever life throws at her. “I don’t believe in balance. I believe in ebb and flow. We go where we are needed the most. Sometimes our families need us more, sometimes our profession needs more of us, and sometimes we have to stop and give back to ourselves to recharge to keep going. There’s a misconception and stress associated with the pressure of being balanced. It can drive us crazy. Sometimes we need to just give ourselves a break.” For Juve, this includes the occasional food indulgence. “My favorite meal is filet, asparagus, a slice of rich chocolate cake, and red wine.” Getting at least eight hours of rest is one of her essentials, and “sleeping in when I don’t have to get up for work at 3:45 a.m.” is a luxury. Reading, not checking her phone, visiting friends, naps, and binge watching movies with her dog, Bella, also make the list. “Sometimes the family joins me, but they lovingly allow mom to re-charge … Mediation has opened a new door for me. It used to be hard to stop and recharge but giving myself that time has been a gift … My work is my passion, so, at times, it’s my self-care.”

Hannah SERIMIAN

M

Innovative. Passionate. Driven.

eet the #BoxyBoss! Hannah Serimian is the original Boxy Girl® and founder of the Boxy™ brand, which launched in 2015. When Serimian couldn’t find well-made, attractive makeup and jewelry organizers for herself and her daughters, she set out to create one that would marry quality and aesthetics into a highly functional product. At the foundation of the brand is the stackable, acrylic box organizer, which she and her father, Dan Chapman, envisioned and invented together. Its interlocking design is a “revolutionary way to stack a Box(y)!” Yet the Original 4-stack Boxy Girl® was only the beginning of a lifestyle brand that now includes the #BoxyBlog, Boxy Creative™, Boxy Kids™, Boxy Girl Radio™, and Boxy Beauty™ most notably. Entrepreneurship is in Serimian’s blood. Her grandparents, Thomas and Avalynn Chapman, owned the Mar-Lynns Antiques store in Fresno, and her parents owned the Mar-Lynns Furniture and Furniture Republic stores throughout California. Growing up with working parents, she and her sisters were exposed to every aspect of the business. “Being an entrepreneur and innovator is part of the fabric of my identity. My family has modeled leadership, creativity, and grit! I am now able to apply these skills that I’ve learned into all aspects of the Boxy™ brand.” Serimian’s third generation background coupled with her education was an excellent platform for her career as the #BoxyBoss, who majored in communications at Fresno State and has a background in marketing and sales. Thus, when she discovered her passion for creating products primarily for women, she had the foresight to start acquiring her intellectual property (website domains, social media handles, trademarks, design patents, copyrights, etcetera) right away, in 2010. The birth of a lifestyle brand was the result. “I’m constantly thinking about solutions that can improve my daily routines and have many ideas about products that will compliment the consumers’ lifestyle.” The Boxy™ brand has grown to include a variety of products aimed at catering to those consumers. “Whether it’s amazing skincare for women, organization solutions for the home, or children’s accessories and apparel, at Boxy Girl® and the Boxy Girl® brands we are driven to create thoughtfully curated and innovative products for consumers.” Studies are increasingly evidencing that female entrepreneurs are starting businesses at a rapidly increasing rate. What sets them apart from their male counterparts is their personal motivation for starting a business. “Women are driven by ideas that are important to them. I am one of these women, navigating the vast complexities that come from transitioning roles as a domestic CEO, aka housewife (by the way, I strongly dislike that term), to a Boxy™ CEO.” Serimian nurtures her business with the same devotion she shows her children, Emily, 22, William, 13, and Chloe, 11. “Being a mother certainly instructs how I live my life, both personally and professionally,” and her children’s futures are a big part of that. “Where I’m at in my life right now and the experiences that I’ve had as a female founder has really informed my questioning about the social narratives that women and men are told from childhood into adulthood.” As a working mother,

she values the opportunity to right those injustices. “We give young girls dolls and tell them to care for the doll, and we also inundate them with images and messaging about how they should look. In contrast, we give boys toys that encourage creativity, innovation, and messages about achievement and success. And so, I feel a tremendous responsibility to challenge these old, outdated narratives, and to model for my own children … ways that will instruct their path in life, not only as it relates to business, but, more importantly, as it relates to their character.” The personal and professional balancing act is very real for working parents. “Being a mother and feeling the constant pull between career and family is so hard. Feelings of guilt and disappointment are excruciating at times.” But Serimian also believes, “When we ask women how they balance work and family, it is a question that serves to undermine women today … It implies that women are expected to not only succeed in their careers, but to also be the primary ‘domestic executive.’ When in truth, our husbands and partners benefit by equally sharing in the care of their families.” Family experience is something Serimian strives to cultivate, as she truly relies on the love of her family—she and her husband, Marlon, have been married for 15 years. “I would like to travel more and explore our beautiful world with my husband and children.” Surrounding herself with the mystery and beauty of nature is a source of renewal for her. Amid the chaos of everyday life, it’s important to take time for oneself— enter the Boxy Girl™ X Julia Cantu Skincare line, which launched this past November and speaks to Serimian’s love of skincare and makeup. What’s one of her favorite ways to unwind? “Taking a hot bath with our Boxy Girl Beauty™, AWAKE™ Boxy™ Bath Soak!” Not to mention sleep, yoga, and “my AH-mazing and totally life changing Boxy Girl Beauty™ skincare line!” “Women today face many challenges in business. As the owner of Boxy Girl® and the related Boxy™ brands, I have gone from being a small startup and have grown to a position in which my company is ready to scale to the next level. Now that I am entering into this new phase of my career with Boxy™, it truly has been shocking [and] surprising … in a disappointing way how most large corporations, that create products for women, are male dominated.” In an effort to raise awareness and increase discussion about the subjects that Serimian feels passionately about, the Boxy Radio™ podcast series was launched on iTunes. “I get the chance to have intimate, honest and sometimes-tough conversations about what it means to be a woman, a mom, a business owner and how we define ourselves in our lives. I have found that in discussions with women … we are all in some way wrestling with our roles.” Rather than focusing on one title or role, the sum of many creates what Serimian calls “a profoundly beautiful life,” for which she is deeply grateful. “I think as a mother, I’m expected to say that being a mother is my greatest accomplishment, but this would serve to understate the complex and profound experiences we each have in our lives that unite us … Boxy Girl® was not about power, personal gain, or notoriety, it was a deep personal calling. Boxy Girl® is my passion and the pathway to connect to something greater than myself.”

This drive to not only survive, but to thrive, has been embedded within our tribe and tribal business operations, including the Chukchansi Crossing Fuel Station & Travel Center and Chukchansi Gold Resort and Casino. As the largest employer in Madera County and voted best Casino Resort by the Central Valley People’s Choice Award 11 years in a row, Chukchansi Gold Resort and Casino has demonstrated its consistent commitment to excellence in customer service to the community.

DESCRIBE YOUR WORK ETHIC As a leader, you have to get the job done! Stick with it, put in the time, and always do quality work. It’s always best to work smarter, not harder so I also try to be as efficient as possible. For me, technology really helps with that such as emails, e-calendar reminders, and a good electronic filing system. WHAT IS THE SECRET TO YOUR SUCCESS One of my secrets to success is to do my best to maintain a good personal balance with my work life, family life, and self-care. I also believe constant self-reflection is important. I believe it helps you constantly improve and consider how things could be more effective. HOW DO YOU UNWIND I unwind by playing with my little girls (ages 2 and 6 years old), by reading, and by playing soccer. HOW DO YOU FIND YOUR WORK-HOME BALANCE Finding a good work-home balance is all about planning. You have to schedule appropriate time and truly be present whether it is time to focus on work or time to focus on family. WHAT INSPIRES YOU I am inspired by good true leaders. That doesn’t always mean a fancy title or notoriety. I believe good leaders step up because they see it is needed and want to help. THREE WORDS THAT BEST DESCRIBE YOU Honest. Fair. Dedicated. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU I’m motivated when I see an opportunity to create positive change in the workplace or with something I care about.

HIRE UP STAFFING SERVICES REBECCA ABELL-KIRKMAN, PRESIDENT FRESNO, CALIFORNIA

A

s the owner and founder of Hire Up Staffing Services, the largest women-owned professional recruiting firm that is headquartered in the Central Valley, I have been in the consulting human resources arena for 13+ years. We started in 2010 and have been fortunate enough to experience 10-25% growth every year since opening. Today, we are not just in Fresno—we have multiple offices throughout California with recruitment specialties in professional office, accounting, management, legal, engineering, manufacturing, information technology, and medical.

WHO WE ARE We’re one of the top recruiting agencies in our area, helping companies find stellar talent to optimize their performance. We partner, not replace, your typical HR department. We give your internal teams the ability to focus on their core competencies— let us recruiting experts bring you the best candidates on the market. WHAT SETS YOU APART Most of us know our weaknesses better than our strengths and we let that influence our behavior. Each of our staff has been trained to identify the positive attributes of the candidates they work with, supporting people in the areas they feel they fall short and empowering them to showcase their strengths. WHAT IS THE SECRET TO YOUR SUCCESS My grandma used to say, “Spend like the bank account that you want to have.” She meant that if you want something badly enough, you’ll figure out a way to get it. That’s the secret to my success… Being realistic, visualizing my goals, and living my life as if I already have the bank account to reach them. HOW DO YOU UNWIND Well, I’m a country girl at heart. When I’m not taking my two kids to all their activities, attending a social event, doing something for a friend, or traveling around the world, I’m usually at home on the “farm.” Weekends you’ll catch me riding my horse through the local orchards or adjusting our seasonal garden.

MADELEINE’S BRIDAL BOUTIQUE SHERRI MOSHER, OWNER CLOVIS, CALIFORNIA

I

purchased Madeleine’s Bridal Boutique in 2004 based on the belief that small business is the root of our community. I want local brides to stay local. I am passionate about love, family, and feminism. And we do our very best to help every bride feel exactly the way they want on their wedding day. Generations of Central Valley brides have bought their dress at Madeleine’s Bridal Boutique (it first opened in 1954 in the Tower District) and we are pleased to allow the future generations the same tradition.

You are good enough, smart enough, beautiful enough, strong enough.

WHAT SUCCESS MEANS TO ME Success is the ability to fulfill dreams. I started my career with Madeleine’s in 1990, and then I transitioned to event planning. Whether it’s a bride’s dream of how they want to look on their special day, or the ability to meet my own dream of owning my own business. We do our very best for our brides. I’ve had a lot of community, family, and support from my parents to become the successful person I am today. Without my bridal mentors, I don’t think I would be where I am today. MY COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT We’ve been involved with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for many years. We dress the Women and Men of the Year candidates for the event. In fact, this year, I was honored to be nominated as Woman of the Year for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. We’re looking forward to raising a lot of money for them in the coming year. ADVICE FOR WOMEN Be yourself. Be sincere. Honesty is the best policy. Knowledge is power for women. I feel that the more knowledge you have in your career the more successful you are. MY GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT I have two strong, intelligent, hard-working daughters. Their dedication to their careers and strong work ethics, which I hope to have instilled in them, makes me the proud momma I am today. I am so proud to call them my daughters.
