LETTER from the

EDITOR

O

ne of the pleasures of editing each edition of CVLUX is watching the publication grow with every issue. I am personally thrilled with our latest endeavor. We are changing a lot of things about the publication, which reflects the growth we are experiencing. Each issue will bring you more of the great content you have become familiar with. Our team is also expanding. I am so happy to welcome Amy Guerra, our new Travel Editor. Her first feature, Apple Pie + Zinfandel, can be found on page 44. In this article, Amy explores road trips for a dog- and kid-friendly weekend in the vast El Dorado and Lodi wine regions— perfect for a summertime escape. Another new member to the LUX team is writer and photographer Brianne Cain. Brianne brings new life to the publication with a writing style and voice which is truly her own. In this issue, she explores Edinburgh in luxurious style. Her article, Savoring Scotland, can be found on page 62. On the digital front, you may have noticed that our website has been redesigned. This expansion will continue in the coming months to provide extended content and additional features not seen in the magazine. I encourage you to venture past the pages of this edition and check out our multi-media platform, which we have worked so diligently to cultivate. Finally, the Luxury Awards nominations have begun! All July, you can visit CVLUX.com to cast your vote for your favorites. The official nominees will be announced in our Sep | Oct Edition of CVLUX (and we have quite a few surprises in store for our readers in that particular issue). The theme of this year’s party will be Diamonds and Rosé. We will also be including a Best Dressed section in the Spring Issue of CVLUX for the event, which means it is never to early to start planning your ensemble! So with this evolution and recent growth, I encourage you to experience all that the CVLUX brand has to offer you and your business—who knows what you may discover. Cheers,

David

High Profile First Class Globetrotters Larry and Sharon Duncan Features Editor Ann T. Sullivan Whitehurst

Larry and Sharon Duncan are the ultimate vivacious couple. They were both reared in Fresno, married some 33 years ago in Maui, have two children, and have traveled all over the world since— some for business, some for pleasure.

—30— JUL | AUG

L

arry is Chairman & CEO of Duncan Ceramics, which has manufacturing plants in Clovis, as well as China. Larry’s grandmother started Duncan Ceramics in 1946. Since then, they have significantly broadened their product line to include over 4,000 craft, ceramic, and DIY products, with their trademark of beautiful, fired colors. Their products are now sold worldwide. Larry goes to China several times a year for business and has been to most of the major cities there. The Duncans usually travel with family and a few friends—the more the merrier! For the long flights, Sharon prefers, “first class, so one’s coherent when you land.” And don’t ask her twice about going to Italy, France, Maui, or Nashville. Sharon has a sister with connections to Exclusively Resorts membership. The homes are massive, with at least 6-8 master bedrooms and bathrooms, and are oftentimes on the grounds of resorts and 5-star hotels, almost always on hillsides overlooking the stunning scenery. At these posh homes, they often hire private, local chefs to cook for them. Their Italian vacation is one of the most memorable for the Duncans. Their group started in Tuscan country, where they visited San Gimignano and the Chianti Valley, which is known for its picturesque rolling hills covered with vineyards. Eventually they made their way through Florence, Sienna, and Rome, where they toured the Roman ruins, Saint Peter’s Basilica, and the Vatican. In France, the Duncans once rented three 350 year-old chateaus within walking distance to one another to accommodate all the friends and family that traveled with them. One of their favorite memories is of going to the local market there to shop for meats, vegetables, et cetera for cooking back at the chateaus. The Duncans enjoyed experiencing the many restaurants that lined the streets of Italy and France, where there is an abundance of champagne and red wine. The Italian people were very welcoming, especially at the small town markets. Turns out they didn’t see any operas in Italy because Larry says he’d fall asleep. “But we did see Phantom of the Opera in New York!” Sharon added. Of all the places they have traveled, Costa Rica was one of Larry and Sharon’s favorites. There they rented an exclusive home, in a gated area, complete with private beaches. Sharing the trip with friends and family, and being within walking distance of great shopping and fantastic restaurants, made the experience truly memorable. They even rented a yacht one day. It sailed to a cove, where, on an exclusive beach, a private chef prepared a gorgeous

luncheon of crab, chicken, and salad. Larry, being an avid scuba diver, found out from the local scuba guide a week later that an 18-20 foot salt water crocodile was spotted sunbathing in the exact same place their beach party took place. Sharon said that had she known that croc was lurking in the waters then she might not have enjoyed the experience so much! “If I can scuba dive, I’m happy,” stated Larry of one of his favorite hobbies. And he’s done so anywhere there is warm water: Turkey, Panama, Mexico, Hawaii, and Australia, to name a few. In fact, Larry shared that, “[Sharon and I would] live in Australia if we ever left the country, as it is very similar to the United States—especially California.” Getting to Hawaii makes Sharon nervous, since one must fly over open water and there is obviously no place to land in an emergency. “Maui is worth the flight,” said Sharon of the place she and Larry tied the knot over 30 years ago. They still love to stay at the Grand Wailea Resort, and are game for Hawaii any time of the year (except September, when it is a bit too humid). When asked about how the cuisine outside of the States compared to what they have tried on their trips, Sharon explained that, “The food wasn’t extraordinarily different [from what you get in the United States]. It’s the private chefs that make the experience noteworthy.” While Larry “eats to live, Sharon lives to eat.” But they both love trying new restaurants. Visiting Si Señor, the famous establishment in Puerto Vallarta, was one memorable dining experience. Now, Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse in Nashville is quickly becoming a favorite place to dine. And for that after dinner drink: Dierks Bentley’s Whiskey Row. Speaking of Nashville, the city is the Duncan’s new favorite place to visit and explore since their daughter, Summer, is dating country music star Jon Pardi. The couple has two children, Hawk, 31 (who works alongside Larry at Duncan Enterprises), and Summer, 29, for whom their Summer Hawk Ranch is named. At their ranch, there is a plethora of animals—zebras, emus, horses, baby goats, and a rainbow of doves (colored with Duncan dyes) are some of the highlights. Sharon takes care of the morning feeding, while Larry feeds in the evening since Sharon is usually cooking dinner then. On a personal note, it is easy to see that the Duncans are just crazy about each other; they love doing things together, and enjoy even more just being with one another. They are two beautiful people, inside and out, and you have to admire their energy and excitement when talking about their children, their travels, their experiences, and their life at Summer Hawk Ranch.

The people of Fresno, California, are zipping around in more Audi, Porsche and exotic cars than ever. Here’s why.

he goes on. “There’s that prideful, wistful tear in the eye.”

That type of infectious enthusiasm is what drove CJ, a former all-star Major League ballplayer, to Fresno in the first place. He traded his mitt for driving gloves and moved his family — wife Lisalla and two daughters — to join the growing car community just over a year ago. When you walk into a CJ Wilson dealership, like Audi or Porsche Fresno, it’s obvious that everyone there is a car enthusiast. Just try asking them about their own favorites and dream cars. And it shows in their sales, too — since taking ownership, they’re up year over year.

For the even more discriminating buyer, the group runs Exotics On Palm. They pride themselves on sourcing truly one-of-a-kind “unicorn” cars. If you’re looking for something the team doesn’t have in stock, this is who you call.

“We either have what you are looking for in one of our stores or you spec it out for us and we will begin the search for you,” CJ explains. With decades of collective experience, the team knows where to look and who to talk to for just about any vehicle you can come up with. Another cornerstone of the group is their effort to give back to and grow their racing fan base. With community track days at Buttonwillow, Laguna Seca and as far as Thunderhill, Spring Mountain (Las Vegas) and INDE (Tucson, Ariz.), they can bring racing enthusiasts together like nowhere else, spreading the

In May, the dealership group launched an inaugural event they’re calling F3 (for Fresno, Fast cars and Food), with plans to make it an annual gala for 500+. This year’s beneficiary was the local group Break The Barriers and

“We love having people come in just to window shop, to look at great cars up close,” CJ says. “We want more people to be part of this community. We are always open.”

SHAKE +STIR HOSTED AT THE ANNEX KITCHEN Managing Editor Lauren Barisic Photographer Don Dizon

W

hat happens when a Leo, a Cancer, a Gemini, a Pisces, an Aquarius, a Virgo, and a Libra get together? The instant chemistry between Ashley Hyatt, Nicole Giordano, Rae Pardini Matson, Caroline Bonadelle, sisters Barbara and Sammie Krikorian, and Kelly Amendola was enough to fool patrons of The Annex Kitchen that these ladies were girlfriends from high school that hadn’t seen each other in years… CVLUX’s Donna Kaczmarski kicked off the seventh installment of Shake+Stir by asking the women to share their zodiac sign as part of introductions—that explained a lot. Four cocktails and five appetizers later, an answer emerged: fast friends!

—42— JUL | AUG

The dimly lit, wood-paneled restaurant is located on Shaw, where Van Ness extension begins, in Fresno. The Annex Kitchen features rustic, Italian-style cuisine, influenced by the seasonal offerings of farms throughout the Central Valley. Dinner is served Tuesday through Saturday, with a daily Happy Hour from 4-6 P.M. Guests will enjoy views of beautiful, old trees through the expansive windows (both of which line the establishment), and they can opt to sit at the bar, which runs the length of the restaurant. First out, the Bee Keeper cocktail caused a stir for its outright summer-freshness. Venus Gin No. 01, St-Germain, lemon, lavender syrup, honey, orange bitters, and Fever-Tree Bitter Lemon soda come together to create what Ashley befittingly referred to as “a bubble bath for the tongue!” Tequila more your fancy? Try The Dilbert. Dos Manos Tequila, Cointreau, and lime serve as the base, and just enough habanero syrup allows a little bit of after-bite, which is accompanied by a refreshing mix of muddled dill and cucumber for a MexicanCalifornian flair. “That kick from the pepper is a fun, subtle surprise,” said Barbara of the aftertaste. If you aren’t a fan of asparagus, Annex’s Wood Grilled Local Asparagus will be the best effort at conversion you’ll even encounter. “It has so much flavor! It’s amazing!” Nicole couldn’t contain her excitement. The spears are topped with a warm gribiche sauce, then finished with a hefty sprinkling of smoked prosciutto breadcrumbs. Someone asked what the creamy cheese being served with toasty bread was... “It’s burrata!” Caroline and David Manning, CVLUX Editor in Chief, simultaneously exclaimed with excitement, eliciting a reflexive laugh around the table. Annex’s take on bruschetta is comprised of creamy Burrata Mozzarella with Peperonata (theirs is best described as a hearty, savory jam featuring roasted bell peppers) served on grilled bread and finished with Jacobsen Sea Salt. Caroline revealed that this is one of her favorite things here. A crowd favorite, Barbara expressed that guests, like she, will “appreciate all the textures and flavors going on.” Half of the ladies present identified with each other over the struggles of being working moms—all their children are young. But since Kelly is expecting her second little one, Annex’s bartender created a special mocktail (featuring blackberry and ginger) so she could still enjoy the camaraderie of drinks with the girls. “This is so good; tart and refreshing! It doesn’t taste like I’m missing out on anything!” Kelly mused.

Basically, the mocktail was a virgin Blackberry Bramble. “It’s summer in a cocktail,” declared Ashley, describing the Absolut Elyx Vodka, blackberry puree, lemon, simple syrup, and FeverTree Bitter Lemon soda mixture. Annex’s Arancini are, essentially, crispy risotto balls filled with mozzarella and basil pesto, then served with tomato sauce. “They are truly what I crave here!” Nicole said of the breadcrumb-coated, fried spheres. I mean, what’s not to love? Eyebrows soared when the marrow appetizer arrived, but Sammie offered to be the taste-tester without hesitation. “Gelatin… Smooth…Sweet…Silky…” she went on. “Buttery! That really is the best way I can describe it,” Sammie concluded the slew of adjectives. Wood Oven Roasted Bone Marrow naturally serves as a spread for Annex’s grilled bread, and is accompanied by pickled shallot with parsley salad and garlic confit. “I like bone broth, but I’m not sure about this,” Rae hesitated at first, but she was pleasantly surprised. It’s definitely different, but worth a try for any self-proclaimed foodie; remember, pretty much anything with garlic is good. Annex’s Wood Fired Pizza list offers traditional pies with farmfresh flair. The Puttanesca pizza uses a customary tomato sauce and mozzarella base, then stars house sausage, chilies, anchovy puree, olives, and leafy arugula. Rae gave everyone a good laugh when (upon seeing the pizza set on the table) her eyes grew to the size of tennis balls and she seemed to go into a trance until Donna offered to put a slice on her plate! The Flight of Fancy cocktail waves at being a Manhattan, but isn’t quite. A concoction of Eagle Rare 10 Year Bourbon, Armagnac Castarède, St. George Bruto Americano, and Dolin Rouge Vermouth is served in a coupe glass with a black cherry garnish. “This could run my car!” exclaimed Nicole. It’s definitely a sipper, but it also “has a very interesting finish,” Ashley followed-up— she is clearly a cocktail connoisseur, and obviously knows what she’s talking about! Over the course of the evening’s conversation, the ladies compared everything from where they get their news and favorite bloggers, to makeup and skincare products they cannot live without. But amid the shop and kid talk, a theme runs through their day-today lives: positive outlook—that constant strive for happiness and choosing betterment. It’s clear that relationships and interaction are at the core of the human experience; food is a universal social experience, and dinner at The Annex Kitchen will certainly leave you, like these ladies, with a lasting memory.

Zinfandel A Dog- and Kid-Friendly Weekend in the El Dorado and Lodi Wine Regions Travel Editor Amy K. Guerra

Day

1

The damp, rural road, just a few minutes outside of Placerville, California, wound its way through bright green vineyards. Rain was in the forecast, but so far we’d avoided it; the clouds tampered with the sunlight, highlighting the soft buds that broke on the vines that weekend. We were just a few hours above Fresno, east of Sacramento, near Apple Hill. Our three kids and dog were packed in the car, and we were on a mission to enjoy the family and dogfriendly nature of a wine region that still feels undiscovered and secluded, despite its popularity.

Placerville, often referred to by the more infamous nickname “Hangtown” (for its numerous hangings during the California Gold Rush), was bursting at its tiny seams with people walking their dogs, drinking coffee, and dining at one of the many eclectic restaurants housed in the unique downtown buildings along Main Street. Just a few steps from a bell tower (that was constructed in 1865 to alert the town in the event of a fire), we ate lunch on the dog-friendly patio of Sweetie Pies. Built that same year, the converted Victorian home is rumored to have once been owned by the sheriff of “Hangtown,” and was converted into a restaurant specializing in home-cooked food in the 1990s. Soon after, we wandered down Main Street, taking in the small wine stores, coffee shops, restaurants, and gift shops. The copper ceilings and wood floor of the Hangman’s Tree Ice Cream Saloon on Main Street hardly alluded to the fact that it opened only a year prior, after an extensive renovation; the owner’s effort to preserve the original character of the saloon above the infamous “hanging tree,” complete with a look-alike door and original flooring, makes patrons feel like they are walking back in time. Just a few miles from Main Street, in nearby Shingle Springs, we arrived at our first winery. The expansive, shady grounds of Cielo Winery, set on forty-one acres, offers picnic space, a wedding venue, a place for summer concerts, and a tasting room (complete with kids’ area on the porch). The kids played nearby in the grassy area with our dog while we walked around the grounds, getting our first look at the budding Sangiovese vines. We drove up the road before arriving at 24 Carrot Farm, a small, roadside, urban farm in Apple Hill. Specializing in youpick wildflowers and certified organic produce, the farm opened shortly after we got an exclusive tour—offering yoga classes, fresh-baked bread, and a quiet reflection area (where wooden chairs overlook a small pond), the farm’s rustic charm was obvious. The idealism of Apple Hill’s charm continued; a few minutes later, we were cuddling a winery puppy and sipping a rich, bold

Petite Syrah on the lush grounds of the Boeger Winery, where well-behaved dogs are even welcome in the tasting room. The first post-prohibition winery to open in El Dorado County, we viewed the historic wine cellar with Greg Boeger and toured the art studio where his daughter paints. We saw the blacksmith quarters, and laughed about dogs and wine with the Boeger family, enjoying the hospitality of some of the friendliest hosts in El Dorado. By the time we reached Mill View Ranch, we were both exhilarated and exhausted, yet we still poured out onto the grounds, our kids taking advantage of the swings and teetertotter while we admired the ranch’s fresh-baked apple pie. Up the road, we stopped at the roadside barn that constitutes the storefront of Smokey Ridge Ranch. It was closed to the public when we got there, but a small display of the ranch’s specialty jams and mustards were neatly strewn on a checkered tablecloth for a private tasting. We walked the length of the ranch, under the shade of their apple trees, before returning to the barn for a wine tasting. At that point, seeing the doors open, a group of couples had wandered in; without hesitation (and indicative of Apple Hill hospitality and inclusion), the owners welcomed them to join the tasting. Collectively, we heard stories about the ranch’s namesake (Smokey the donkey), and left with bottles of wine and jars of jam tucked under our arms, with a sense of familiarity and friendship.

Shortly after, we settled down for dinner on the back porch of the Forester Pub and Grill, located in the heart of Apple Hill. With our dog still in tow and our kids playing football in the back of the restaurant’s grassy area, the small-town, local vibe of the restaurant was everywhere. Under a canopy of pine trees, we took in the luxury of this cozy and secluded place, complete with a pool table and wooden bar that stretched the length of the restaurant. Offering quality, homemade, reasonably-priced food, a wine list (that highlighted the best of the region’s winemakers), and homemade desserts in a casual atmosphere, the pub felt like a perfect fit for traveling families and locals alike. We left Apple Hill content. If Napa is “Disneyland for adults,” El Dorado County is like the small, county fair where town residents pit their grandmother’s best apple pies against each other for a blue ribbon and bragging rights. It’s the place that everyone wants to go, and whatever it may lack in glamour it more than makes up for in authenticity and warmth. Just like apple pie, it’s real, and sweet, and genuine. It’s a place full of roadside stands, baked goods, organic farms, and wine, where everyone is welcomed with an unmatched openness.

Day

2

The next day, we carried out our plan to drive to Lodi, on the way back home, to experience what many in the wine industry have labeled the unofficial “Zinfandel Capital of the World.” On a Sunday morning, shortly before 11 o’clock, we scoured the parking lot of Michael David Winery for space. Just a short distance from Highway 5, the popular winery and restaurant was packed with people and its parking lot was full, despite the time. The doors leading in from its center entrance were divided into two areas: the small bustling café and a farm store, offering vegetables and picnic supplies (like fresh-picked strawberries, salami, and gourmet cheese). The doors from the store opened up onto the massive park-like grounds, where a tasting room, tables, and chairs bordered the vineyards, and lounge areas were set up around rocky waterfalls, bocce ball courts, and a kids’ play area. Home to some of the most popular and coyly named Zinfandel wines on the market, the 7 Deadly Zins winemaker’s grounds reveal the fun, entertaining side the brand is known for. On the east side of the winery, gigantic tanks emblazoned with the carnivalinspired Freakshow Cab label offered an appropriate backdrop to the fun and vibrant outdoor area.

In the heart of downtown Lodi, in a small galley-like storefront, we opted for patio seating at Smack Pie Pizza. A pizza bar offering local Lodi wines, the restaurant sits next to the historic Woolworth building, in the center of Lodi’s diverse and varied dining scene. Around the corner, we wandered into an art gallery serving ice cream. The walls of the Double Dip Gallery showcase the work of Tony Segale, artist and owner. In addition to the handcrafted jewelry pieces of other local artists, the

gallery serves up edible works of art by way of Gunther’s Ice Cream (from Sacramento), like their popular MonPetite Petit Sirah sorbet that is made exclusively for the gallery (using the Michael David label).

Headed home, we stopped at Durst Winery & Estate, where two friendly winery dogs greeted us as we pulled up to the tasting room. Located behind the Durst’s family home, an expansive grass yard stretches to meet wisteria-covered tables. Adirondack chairs and picnic blankets dotted the yard where families and young children enjoyed the spring day. Couples came and went from the tasting room, taking a bottle or two of wine out to the yard to enjoy. We grabbed a glass of Tempranillo and sat in the sun, our children and dog content to run around the yard with the gigantic plastic balls provided by the winery. Occasionally, one of the dogs would meander over for a belly rub from one of the available kids in the yard, taking advantage of the extra attention. Reluctant but satisfied, we drove away from the second wine region that weekend cognizant that we were only a few hours away from the types of wine, dining, and entertainment culture that so many of us expect from larger wine regions. We passed winery directional signs on the way home, each pointing a different way to a new place we have yet to discover—we took note and vowed to return. For more information about visiting El Dorado County’s wine region, go to Visit-ElDorado.com, and to learn about visiting Lodi’s wine region, check out VisitLodi.com.

f you get a chance to talk to Jenn Lyon, talk to Jenn Lyon. She’s bold, she’s funny, and you better believe she’s damn confident. But make no mistake: the North Carolina-born actress and daughter of a pastor (the Rev. Ken Lyon, a former pastor of First United Methodist Church in High Point) recognizes where she comes from and what she gets to do, and she doesn’t take any of it for granted. “My dad’s a preacher, so I was always in church plays, and I was usually the really loud angel,” Lyon explains with a laugh. “I loved fart jokes and falling, anything to make my family laugh … I caught the bug pretty easily. And we moved a lot, so I think being the new kid so many times over also sort of led to an element of performance, because you have to make people like you.” Lyon channeled her enthusiasm and talent through high school theater, and then made plans to go off to college. But she soon discovered that acting, not academics, was her strong suit, and eventually ended up leaving school altogether. Lyon may not have wanted to be back in school, but her family didn’t let her off so easily. “My parents, they just really tough-loved me really hard,” she admits. “They said, ‘If you’re gonna live in this house, you’re going to work and save money and get into another school.’ And after about a year of working at Applebee’s and doing odd jobs and attending community college, I got into the University of North Carolina School of the Arts [UNCSA].” Lyon was 21 by the time she began her training, but being on the older end turned out to be a gift—Lyon gained a deep appreciation of everything she learned, from Chekov to improv. She moved to New York shortly after graduation, quickly finding out that for a Southern girl, figuring out how to pay rent was easy in comparison to figuring out how to live in the Big Apple.

Shirt Rachel Antonoff Skirt AFRM Shoes Styist's Own

“I couldn’t understand why everyone was living on top of each other, or that social discrepancy and inequality,” says Lyon, recounting her frazzled first months of adjusting to the world as a New Yorker, which involved calling her agent constantly. “I could not figure out the subway. I got lost constantly. I didn’t know how to navigate this world!” And while she’s never truly lived in LA, she still would pick Manhattan over the City of Angels—but not because she finally figured out how to get around. “I loved being on the train in the city because you were surrounded by so many different people,” says Lyon. “When you go to LA, you end up being surrounded by actors. And that’s fine, there’s nothing bad about that, but there’s a beauty in sitting next to someone you don’t know and just being surrounded by so many different stories.”

—54— JUL | AUG

Being in New York caused Lyon to re-discover her intense love for theater. Her talents were quickly recognized and she landed an agent almost immediately after moving to the city, kicking off roughly a decade of stage work—including her Broadway debut in Tom Stoppard’s The Coast of Utopia (the most Tony-winning play in history), A.R. Gurney’s The Wayside Motor Inn, Kenneth Lonergan’s Hold On To Me Darling (starring alongside future Justified co-star Timothy Olyphant), and John Guare’s Are You There, McPhee? (she originated the role of Elsie in the show’s world premiere). “Theatre is a whole other beast,” claims Lyon, who becomes thoughtful when reflecting on the difference between theater and television. “It’s amazing how different it is. You have a camera in your face and things are difficult and weird, but there’s something about being in front of people in a dark room for a couple of hours … the people that do that eight times a week, I really have a lot of respect for them.” Her most recent stint on Broadway was when she returned to star in Larry David’s hit Fish in the Dark in 2015—would she go back again, after having the glitz and glamour of the television sets and craft services? “That’s my first love, so yes, absolutely,” Lyon says emphatically. “For me, theater is where the friendships happen, where the craft gets sharpened. It’s magical and so fun.” Our conversation turns to travel (we’re talking for our Travel Issue, after all), and I ask if she’s had any formative experiences abroad or otherwise. “I have never been anywhere except maybe Canada on a bus,” Lyon assures me with a laugh, before launching into a story about an acting teacher from Turkey, who taught Lyon during her years at UNCSA. “She invited people to live with her in Turkey for the summer, and it really changed my life,” says Lyon. “It was eyeopening. It helped me become independent and less concerned with beating everyone all the time. Like, oh, the world is full of people who listen and respond in different ways. When you’re Southern, you’re just constantly nodding and affirming.” It’s that sense of independence that she credits when she talks about Justified, which was also her first big break. After a stint of stand-out guest starring roles on other FX shows like Louie and Army Wives, Lyon was cast in the recurring role of Lindsey Salazar, the love interest of Timothy Olyphant’s Raylan Givens. For two seasons she commandeered the screen as a bartender with a mean shotgun aim, and it was a role that put her on the map in Hollywood. “It was my first everything—my first sex scene,” Lyon proclaims proudly. “And I was really scared. I didn’t know s**t about cameras, I didn’t know cameras on the dolly were delivering stuff to this camera over here or that camera over there, I didn’t know I would have to create my own character … you get shot out of a cannon. And I was just trying to keep my pants on, and I was so terrified. But Timothy was such a gem and he was so patient. If I did a bunch of stupid stuff, he would just reassure me. I learned everything because I learned watching him and other people on the show.”

Following her work on Justified, Lyon landed a role as Cheryl Hines’ sister on the long-running ABC series Suburgatory and starred opposite George Lopez in another FX series, the short-lived Saint George. Now, she’s appearing on television weekly in TNT’s Claws, a show about five manicurists in Florida who find themselves in the world of organized crime when they start laundering money. It’s a classic good-girls-gone-bad story set against the gritty parts of the Sunshine State, and Lyon plays Jennifer, the best friend of salon owner Desna (Niecy Nash). On the surface, it doesn’t seem there’s a lot that you could learn in terms of life lessons from Lyon’s Claws character. But don’t be fooled by appearances (or nail tips). Like Jennifer, Lyon shows depth and smarts when explaining how she finds her character parallels her everyday life, and her life in general. “Be bold,” Lyon says confidently. “Be bold and just f**k the noise, because there’s so much noise. I’ve learned to be bold in my choices, and who cares if you get this job or who likes you? There’s so much better stuff for you to focus on.” Lyon goes on to add that if she could give her younger self advice, it would be to start volunteering. “If you start community service, it really puts things in perspective. It kind of helps you zone out. So what if I didn’t get that audition? There’s other things that matter. It puts things in focus.” As someone lucky enough to have already run the gamut when it comes to working with talented co-stars and on acclaimed series, Lyon knows she’s been able to act among some pretty great company. But, as with everyone in the industry, there are always those “reach for the stars” dreams, no matter how famous you are—and Lyon is far from settling down when it comes to working, so she definitely has her wish list. “I’d love to work with Laurie Metcalf,” she reveals. “I think Catherine O’Hara is just the most brilliant, funny, ridiculously great actress. And Donald Glover! I think the stuff he’s doing is just so brilliant.” As our conversation wraps up, and as we turn to chatter about our own personal and professional goals, I ask Lyon to name something she thinks she’s good at. I’ve caught her off guard and she pauses, and I swear I can see her smiling on the other end of the phone line as she thinks about what to say. “I’m really good at fake running into door jams. Or falling into a potted plant.” Hollywood, take note: Jenn Lyon can do it all, but you can’t take the comedy out of the girl!

Paris? Oui!

When in Rome…

When you think of Paris, you invariably think of anything and everything chic. Whether it’s fashion, décor, or food; the French do it all with an essence of luxury and style that is imitated around the world. Their approach to design is much like how they enjoy a dining experience— just a dash of each wonderful component to make for a perfectly finished product. This is applied to balance of color, pattern, and texture.

Sound the organ, cover your shoulders, and count your rosary beads—the feeling of purity in Vatican City is unmatched. Even Michelangelo’s iconic artwork, covering the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, seems holy. These Renaissance frescoes represent the crux of Italian art history. The exhibitions of human poses throughout these structures have set the tone for sculptures and live models alike throughout the ages.

The grandeur of tall ceilings, with delicately gilt Louis XVI garlands, set the tone of quintessential yet elegant style. The stoic, European portraits overshadowed by the lavish crystal chandeliers express a certain je ne sais quoi. What I do know is, as much as I’d love to spend all day perusing the iconic Louvre, I’d rather be lunching on the Seine, with a view of the Eiffel Tower, and soaking in the Parisian summer to the tune of Doris Day. This contrasting vibe is also native to their culture, now commonplace in contemporary home décor: French Provencal styling. Clean lines of French doors alongside textured stone balconies, distressed wooden dining tables, and decorative mirrors give the feeling of a laid-back, sunkissed, European lifestyle we long for in the daily grind.

Much like the French, the Italians have had a hand of influence over many sectors in design. Known for their craftsmanship in fine jewelry, clothing, furniture, tapestries, and leathers, Italian collections are renowned and coveted for their luxurious aesthetic worldwide. Throughout all of these sectors are also touches of the 18th century Baroque period. Even in contemporary settings, this flamboyant, decorative gilding makes anything feel more formal. Rococo is also timeless and graceful, a continued evolution of its Baroque predecessor.

Second Salute: London In the presence of royalty, your taste becomes much more expensive. This respected monarchy reigns over every element of their culture with poise and dignity (aka, "Bad and Boujee," if you ask Migos). While their modern collections of architecture and décor are reminiscent of our own New York City, the original style of England can be showcased with their ornate detailing in rich woodwork and stocky iron sculptures. What’s commonly known as “Americana” may be their greatest influence on our United States. Simplistic and patriotic styling (often refereed to as the farmhouse look) is prominent on the East Coast, especially in the New England region. Distinctions of this genre are architectural dormers, thick crown moulding made of fine pine and walnut, and bold color palates. Everything is large in London: the 775 rooms that make up Buckingham Palace; the world’s tallest cantilevered observation wheel, the London Eye; the iconic Westminster Abbey, where we witnessed Prince William wed; and let’s not forget Big Ben, weighing in at 13 tons. In each of these structures, we can see the native gothic and Victorian influences. In a way, the heavy columnar detailing subtly reinforces the authority of the British guards. Yet somehow they manage to soften their tone with delicate traces of Louis-style swag drawn from French inspiration. Or maybe it’s the elegance of some of the most coveted jewel collections in the world?

Aye Caramba, Madrid! Matador, draw the muleta! The fusion of Mediterranean style with Spanish flair is evident in one of Spain’s most notable structures, the Museo del Prado along the Paseo del Arte in Madrid. Its columnar entrance is comparable to that of Roman architecture, but is accented by native elements of rich terracotta, with intense reds and oranges in stone and ceramics. In San Lorenzo, you almost feel at home, as our own California vibe has drawn heavily from this region, as seen throughout the missions and in beautiful Santa Barbara. Wrought iron pieces, varieties of stone, and natural glazes create a unique texture in the vibrant color palates of fine mosaics. Wooden doorways with impressive hand-carvings and meticulously laid brick roads embody the rustic and coastal feeling of Spanish design. The signature blue and white tiles that kiss our feet inevitably cause a thirst for Clase Azul! Ole! Just when you think you’ve discovered your own personal style, exposure to these varieties of design across the world transcends your imagination. Much like cooking, every nation uses similar ingredients (architecture and design), but because they spice (style) it differently, it takes on an entirely different flavor (look)! As the summer love affair with your new favorite vacation spot comes to a close and you return to your own personal space, what you see through your mind’s eye will likely be a new view. You may repurpose existing elements in your own décor, or you may find yourself restyling all together. Either way, this infusion of updates will become a constant reminder of another wonderful jaunt—a life experience filled with unforgettable memories…until next summer!

Living History WHAT’S INSIDE THE MUSEUMS AT THE FRESNO FAIRGROUNDS Managing Editor Lauren Barisic

T

here’s a reason they call it The Big Fresno Fair—Fresno County is one of the richest in California; it’s bursting at the seams with history, culture, and agriculture. Fair officials had the foresight to create a place where people can come and view all that Fresno County has to offer. And it’s free! Unless you go during Fair time, in which case you must pay Fair admission. To clarify, there are two separate museums in the fairgrounds: the Big Fresno Fair Museum and the Fresno County Historical Museum. While they are located just steps from each other, their objectives are slightly different. The Big Fresno Fair Museum covers everything there is to know about the Central Valley’s biggest fair from its beginnings in 1884, as well as highpoints of historical Valley life. The Fresno County Historical Museum gives a grand overview of Fresno County and its influencers in modern context. Every inch of both museums, inside and out, is thoughtfully utilized. The Big Fresno Fair Museum was the first of the two to open in 2013, and is housed in O’Neill Hall. Showcasing more than 2,600 items that highlight the Fair and the Central Valley’s evolution over some 135 years, it’s easy to feel sensory overload. Starting with a variety of farm equipment and Sun-Maid memorabilia displayed along the entrance ramp, patrons are immediately submerged in Valley history as soon as they walk through the door. There are a lot of firsts in there: first ever cotton candy and popcorn machines, first ticket booth erected for the Fair, first blue ribbon given out at the first Fair—the list goes on. Highlights include: an exhibit on Wyatt Earp’s racehorses, a miniature replica of the Fair’s original wooden racetrack, a model of the original grandstands, a life-size cow with info on the battle between Tulare and Fresno counties’ dairy expansion, 42 original “Pop” Laval photographs, hand-blown glass spirit signs behind the building’s retired bar, a set of California Chrome’s winning race shoes, original Fair banners, the history of Harris Ranch, antique fruit box labels and carousal horses, excerpts on racing of all kinds—that list goes on, too.

It’ll take about an hour to really go through the museum. Teachers can even create assignments based on the material inside, as students can scan QR codes to ascertain additional information online. It’s a great way to get the tech-savvy, younger generation interested and involved in their local history. The Fresno County Historical Museum opened just a couple years later in 2015. It’s housed in the two-story building just to your right when you go in the Chance Entrance Gate. When walking into the Big Fresno Fair Museum, the level of professional curatorship is immediately striking. What’s in there? A restored 1913 Fresno Fire Department fire truck, alongside an 1887 hand pump, is the centerpiece of the first floor. Guests will be awestruck by a slice of the world’s largest fallen sugar pine, with timeline plates nailed to rings indicating historical highpoints; the seedling took root before Christopher Columbus sailed to the Americas. There’s a piece of the Shaver Flume, which transported the lumber that built the Valley. A standing exhibit dedicated to Fresno’s Japanese-Americans covers everything from World War II internment to Japantown. A gallery wall chronicles the life of writer William Saroyan. A closet has been converted into “Krehbiel’s Mercantile,” which you can walk into like you would an actual storefront. One wall is papered with nothing but pictures capturing past sitting presidents on their visits to Fresno. The Valley’s extensive obsession with racing (auto, motorcycle, horse, airplane) is depicted next to the Italian Entertainment Park’s original sign. The Fresno Athletic Hall of Fame is there, too. And that’s just a teaser of what’s included. Docents are available to walk you through both museums. During Fair time, guided tours are available at 11:30 A.M., then again at 2 and 4 o’clock in the afternoon. Make note that the buildings open when the Fair does and close at 9 P.M. daily, but the second floor of the Fresno County Historical Museum closes earlier at 5:30 P.M. Anyone wishing to view the museums any other day of the year must make an appointment by calling 559.650.FAIR with the number of party members and desired date. Don’t hesitate to call—they are more than eager to set up a convenient time for anyone to check out the museums!

But if you are lucky enough to be accompanied by John C. Alkire, CEO of The Big Fresno Fair, you’ll be astounded to find that there isn’t a question he can’t answer…in depth. These museums are clearly one of his most prized possessions. And he is constantly finding ways to add to them in an effort to improve excellence. The Community Cultural Center (a 1,000 squarefoot room on the first floor) will constantly rotate features on the diverse ethnic background of the Central Valley. This year, a new exhibit on the Sikh community is going in. An interactive touchscreen shares the stories of 76 Valley icons with photos, videos, and an audio narrative in three different languages next to a 27’ long and 9’ high mural painted by local artist Dale Oftedal, which depicts Fresno County’s wealth of ethnic and agricultural heritage. A new Armenian exhibit is coming to the second story. And Monster City Studios will be building a new projection map of Fresno’s history, so guests can see the city’s evolution. Outside, there will be a refurbished racecar, from the Kearney Bowl, being added to the exterior display. In 2019, it will be hoisted into the air to join the collection of neon signs surrounding the Paul Paul Theater. P.S. If you’re looking for a venue to host an event or celebration, those neon signs and the old Fresno Courthouse Cupola (visible from the expansive second story windows of the Fresno County Historical Museum) would make for an unforgettable view. Plus, there’s a historic watering hole on-site, since The Cosmopolitan’s original bar now resides upstairs. The Big Fresno Fair returns for its 135th year on October 3rd, and will run through the 14th. Attendance exceeds 600,000 people every year, yet seemingly few realize that these museums are right there. When you visit The Big Fresno Fair this autumn, make a point of stopping by to check out the Big Fresno Fair Museum and the Fresno County Historical Museum, especially if you’re a Central Valley native—plan on making an appointment to bring your kids, grandkids, grandparents, and local friends back for the same hometown roots experience. If you choose to go during Fair time, the cost of admission is well worth the price you’re already going to pay to obtain that annual guilty pleasure: fair food.

A TRAVEL LOVER'S STYLISH GUIDE TO EDINBURGH

FEATURES EDITOR BRIANNE CAIN

T

he travel bug first took hold of me at a young age. When I was just 12 years old, I had the opportunity to go on a three week long cultural exchange trip to the British Isles, and my parents shockingly agreed to let me go. On that first night in London, I called my parents from one of those quintessential British red phone booths and happily informed my mom that I’d fallen in love with London and hoped to never go home. From this moment on, I really never looked back. Thanks to this early experience, international travel is something that I’ve never felt intimidated by. These days, you’ll still regularly find me dreaming of my next destination, and thankfully my husband has agreed to make travel a priority in our life together. Travel is something that I am so passionate about because I believe it has the power to enrich our lives in countless ways. Experiencing new places leads to meeting new people, trying new foods, and educating our minds about topics we would be unlikely to encounter within the context of everyday life. It’s truly a transformative experience and one that when shared with your partner bonds you together in a way that long outlasts the journey itself. Although we share a love of travel, I definitely have a more adventurous spirit than my husband, so it usually takes us some time to compromise on a destination that we both feel excited about. Scotland has been near the top of our list for a while now; it’s been a dream of mine to revisit Edinburgh ever since spending a day there on that long-ago childhood trip. Like the rest of the UK, Scotland is a very approachable country to visit, with warm and friendly people. In addition to Edinburgh, I wanted to visit the Highlands and the Isle of Skye, both areas I’d seen photos of and imagined as otherworldly, with mist-covered mountains, rolling green hills, and expansive lochs. So I organized our itinerary to include a tour of these areas, bookended with time in the city. A deeply obsessive researcher, I typically devour all of the information I can find about a destination when planning a trip, my favorite resources being Pinterest, TripAdvisor, and travel blogs. Scotland proved to be every bit as majestic as I had envisioned. It’s a country steeped in history, with ancient ruins and grand estates juxtaposed against rugged scenery. There’s such a sense of magic in the air that when people tell you thickly-accented tales of giants and fairies, you find yourself believing them. For a moment, sitting down to an impressive breakfast in the sumptuous Rhubarb Restaurant at Prestonfield House, I felt as though I were a guest at a fabulous estate in a period film set 200 years ago. The occasional squawk from one of the hotel’s resident peacocks startled me back to reality. Wandering down the narrow closes along Edinburgh’s Royal Mile and watching the stunning scenery of the Highlands fly by as we rode the Jacobite steam train are other memories that stand out in my mind now that we’ve returned home. These little magical moments in time keep the wanderlust alive.

WHAT TO DO Explore Old Town Edinburgh is an easy city to explore on foot, and Old Town is where you should begin. The city’s oldest neighborhood dates back to medieval times, and the streets are lined with historic buildings and monuments, along with pubs and souvenir shops. Your checklist here should include Edinburgh Castle, The Royal Mile, and Grassmarket.

Shopping For designer fashions and luxury accessories, make sure to visit Harvey Nichols, Edinburgh’s renowned, upscale department store. Find unique souvenir shops on Victoria Street, featuring Scottish cashmere and tweeds. Cranachan & Crowdie is a great spot to stock up on gourmet gifts and Cadenhead’s Whisky Shop is the place to take the whisky drinker in your life.

Royal Edinburgh If you’re hooked on Netflix’s The Crown or are still dreaming of this spring’s royal wedding, Edinburgh will surely feed your royal obsession. A tour of Holyroodhouse offers a glimpse into one of the Royal family’s three working palaces. You can also tour the Royal Yacht Britannia, permanently docked in Edinburgh. Discover what life was like on Her Majesty’s floating royal residence and enjoy a pot of tea and a scone in the onboard café.

Escape to the Highlands Edinburgh itself is worth a trip, but nothing compares to the wild scenery and romance of the Scottish countryside. If the Highlands are calling your name, you could rent a car and brave driving on the “other” side of the road, or book a tour like we did. We went with Edinburgh-based Highland Explorer Tours and had an unforgettable time on our 3-Day Isle of Skye & The Highlands Tour.

Cirque du Soleil: Corteo Managing Editor Lauren Barisic

C

orteo presents the imagined funeral cortege of its central character, Mauro, a clown who has spent a lifetime as a performer. The Corteo itself is a funeral procession. Mauro is dreaming of his own funeral, particularly the characters that he has encountered over a life lived at the circus—those with whom he lived and worked, and whom he loved. The audience has the opportunity to meet these unique individuals as the funeral parade unfolds. Rather than mourn Mauro’s death, spectators are invited to celebrate his life, the here and hereafter, through laughter, in a joyous exuberance. Mauro’s extravagant existence is recalled as his memories commemorate a life gloriously lived and dedicated to merriment and delight. Conceived in 2005, Swiss–Italian writer and director Daniele Finzi Pasca created Corteo in collaboration with Cirque du Soleil, and it toured as a Big Top show for a decade before retiring. From September 2017 through March 2018, it was converted to an Arena show under Artistic Director Mark Shaub, who explained that “It is essentially the same show, but updated in ways.” New stage technology was integrated to revamp the original show. Cirque du Soleil presents three types of show: Big Top, Arena, and permanent. Big Top shows take seven days to set up and three to tear down, so they usually stay in cities for 6-12 weeks at a time. Arena shows can be set up in 10-12 hours and are torn down in roughly four hours, so they often stay in a city for a week, with Sunday being the travel day (either by bus or plane). Las Vegas is a permanent showplace, which rotates different acts. Eventually Corteo will go international, like the majority of the Cirque du Soleil shows. After the United States and Canada tour (likely through 2019), it will probably hit Europe next, depending on when other shows previously toured there. But how does one become a Cirque du Soleil performer in the first place? That depends on the talent type.

The company has a huge casting department at their headquarters in Montreal. Talent scouts do the majority of the work, going to gymnastics competitions, traditional circuses (even in different countries), and dance performances at certain dance schools. They’ll go to see specific dancers and gymnasts almost anywhere. But they also take auditions, both live and via online video submissions. Many performers still come to the circus either from circus schools, from circus families, or from other circuses, but the majority comes from the world of competitive gymnastics. Once an athlete’s competition career is over, working as a Cirque du Soleil performer can offer them a livelihood post competition, extending said career (as an acrobat) by possibly 10 years. Cirque du Soleil shows carry backups within the cast (just in case), but not in a singular capacity—one trains for principal roles A, B, and C, but might also train for F and G if the main person is out, thus allowing the show to backup from within. Only extended periods of leave time (like in cases of illness, injury, or a family situation) would require a replacement to train to substitute a role. If the need to replace an artist does arise, Cirque du Soleil truly can choose from the best in the world. Cirque du Soleil’s Corteo crew travels with 115 people, of whom 51 are on stage. That number includes coaches, physiotherapists, artistic personnel, musicians, and travel accommodators. At least another 25 technicians, for both off and under stage, are necessary for assembly. And Corteo even has their own separate caterers, whose department sets up their own kitchen during the Arena shows, serving 1-2 meals a day depending what the acrobats’ schedule demands. On the Arena tours, a kitchen staff is hired to travel with the Cirque du Soleil show from one city to the next. This might seem excessive at first glance, but think about it—the acrobats perform up to two shows a day, and being in full makeup means it isn’t easy to just run out and grab a bite without raising an eyebrow in public.

—70— JUL | AUG

But by comparison to most Cirque du Soleil shows, Corteo’s performers wear relatively little makeup— that’s because, “In Corteo we really get to see the people and the characters,” explained Shaub. Most shows are fantastical, with alien and animallike costumes. But in Corteo, the performers are dressed as “everyday people,” since you get to see who the people are in Mauro’s circus life. You can enter their world because you feel like you could be a part of it; this circus is an inviting entity. Yet these people, who look ordinary, are doing extraordinary things with their bodies, over and again. Audiences are drawn in because of who the people are, but even Shaub admitted that, “it continues to amaze me.” Remember, Corteo toured originally as a Big Top show for 10 years—if you saw it then, the show you’ll see now isn’t exactly the same. Shaub explained that the artistic direction department had to edit Corteo down for the Arena conversion, making the pacing that much better. Corteo moves through Mauro’s story at a comfortable speed, yet manages to cover a lot of ground and a range of emotion. It’s certainly an unforgettable experience, and Cirque du Soleil makes a point of allowing their shows to evolve so they don’t become stale. Some in Las Vegas have been running there for 18 years—what keeps them fresh is the harnessing of new talent. Artists obviously come and go, and they bring new things with them. Acrobats keep getting better and better. Allowing these artists to develop and evolve leads to higher levels of acrobatic ability. As their abilities keep being heightened, the result is a better quality show. It is this high standard of excellence that maintains the same artistic idea and integrity that originally created the shows—Corteo is no exception. When looking up Cirque du Soleil’s show list online, there’s an impressive number to choose from. What sets Corteo apart is its ability to transcend fantasy into the familiarity of real-world existence—and departure. Corteo examines the illusive space between heaven and earth through theatrical comedy and visual splendor. Its acrobats set poetry in motion against a stage set with grandiose flare, which is inspired by the Eiffel Tower. The juxtaposition of imperfection versus perfection, tragedy versus elation, and fragility versus strength comes together to illustrate the humanity that is within us all. Corteo will stun audiences at Fresno’s Save Mart Center for six performances, which will run from September 20th through the 23rd. Tickets are available online at CirqueduSoleil.com.
