Rowdy is a second-generation radio guy who grew up in Texas. He has worked at some of the most legendary country radio stations in the nation. He is an ACM Award Winner for Personality of the Year, and was the youngest person to ever be inducted to the Texas Radio Hall of Fame.
Fun Fact: When he ‘hit the big time’ in 1994, he informed his new boss that he only planned on spending two years (max) in Houston, as he wanted to get to California as soon as career would allow it. It only took him 30 years to make good on that promise!

(table) COFFEE TALK
5 Easy Tips to Help You Choose the Perfect Piece for Your Space
Interiors Editor Erin Melkonian
In the quest to find THE coffee table, there are many factors worth considering. Yet with so many options out there, it may be confusing to know where to begin. What factors help narrow down the search? These tips will make this task a bit more manageable by giving you questions to consider and pointing out factors that should be taken into account when deciding what shapes, sizes, and styles should make the final cut.
—36— MAR
1
MATCH THE ROOM’S SHAPE
The very first thing that goes into selecting a coffee table for your space is taking into account the shape of your room. If your living room is long and narrow, don’t waste your time looking for square or round coffee tables. You will end up with a coffee table that is disproportionate to the room and furniture arrangement. Square rooms should have square or round coffee tables and rectangle rooms should have rectangular or oval coffee tables.
KEEP IT LOW
A coffee table is considered accent furniture. It should be just that—an accent. Keeping tables low will take up less visual space and allow for the more predominant furniture—like sofas—to set the stage. The preferred height for your coffee table is usually the same height as your seat cushion—about eighteen inches. You can veer a couple of inches in either direction and be fine. But as the height of your coffee table creeps up, you are visually taking away space from the overall furniture arrangement and throwing the scale of your space out of balance.
3 ROUND VS. RECTANGLE
2
I like to keep it pretty simple in my overall furniture arrangements. However, I like things to appear balanced. If you have some seriously straight and chunky lines in your room, you may opt for a round or oval shaped table to make it more visually interesting. Conversely, if your room has a bunch of slouchy, soft lines, you could try a more structured rectangular or square coffee table. Offsetting the shape of your coffee table with the other furniture in your space will give you a very complete and balanced look.
MAKE IT PERSONAL
I like to infuse a bit of personal style when it comes to designing spaces for my clients. I will select a coffee table that matches their demeanor—artistic, creative, or serious. You may play around with different materials such as wood, metal, and glass. Odd shapes and unusual bases are another great way to imbue some personal style.
5 FILL THE SPACE APPROPRIATELY
4
Not only will your space dictate the shape of your table, but it will also have an impact on its size. If you have a large space with high ceilings, opt for an oversized coffee table. If your space is closer to the size of an apartment, keep it minimal. There is nothing more cringe in the design world than a perfectly operational room with a simply too-small coffee table. Make sure you give really great thought to the size of your coffee table by considering the size of your room. Take a measuring tape and try out different sizes.

A NEW LOOK IN
Old Fig
Interiors Contributor Sharon Robertson
Copy Writer Nichole Louchios
Photographer Ellie Koleen
“We fell in love with this neighborhood, and this particular house felt so serendipitous,” says owner Kristen Prieto when they first toured their home in Fresno’s Old Fig Garden neighborhood. “During the initial inspection, the original owner’s daughter shared specific memories from growing up here, including the hall closet interior walls where the physician-father would scribble notes when he couldn’t find a pad. We still have pieces like that of this home.”
These enthusiastic client conversations led designer Sharon Robertson of Sift Collection to take on the project. “It was obvious the new owners had a vision for the home but also apparent they didn’t want to lose the heart and soul of the existing 1950s structure.” This outdated California ranch home in the heart of the Central Valley needed modern updates to accommodate the young, growing family. Being new to large-scale renovations, homeowners Dr. Jordan and Kristen Prieto reached out to the interior designer for assistance.
“It sounds so cliché, but they truly were dream clients,” reflects Sharon. “They had taste and knew what they liked but needed help with reworking most of the layout.” The homeowners also had a love for emerging artists and collecting home décor from their extensive travels—a pile of unframed prints from various European trips, family photographs from abroad, and small pieces picked up from sentimental cities throughout the States.
This gave their designer a lot of insight into their long-term dreams for the home. Functionality was crucial, but so was meeting the clients’ needs. While Kristen had an affinity for Southern traditional homes, her husband preferred uncluttered, minimalist interiors. It took some creativity and moving walls to achieve the final design, which would satisfy the needs and reflect the aesthetics of both husband and wife.
“Budget always matters. Honoring the clients’ needs and really listening, we were able to balance and finesse the design concept until it all worked,” notes the designer. Using various natural textures and materials plus leaning on some existing interior features, the house exudes warmth, despite the bright and airy open concept. Old-growth cedar ceilings, plantation shutters, and wood-burning fireplaces were thoughtfully placed, complementing the clean, modern updates.
The designer was extra thoughtful when designing the home office. Creatively designed white oak slat walls meant the room allowed light to filter through the rest of the kitchen and adjoining rooms while letting working parents easily view kids’ activities while stationary. The added custom-built white oak his and hers desks created purpose and plenty of storage, so while this room is open during entertaining, it never feels busy or cluttered.
As for the kitchen floorplan, nearly everything was moved, except for the sink and picture window. The existing walk-in pantry was omitted, and all the cabinets were redesigned to work at full capacity. The homeowners fell in love with a specific stone while material shopping, so that material was utilized throughout as a seamless backsplash and floating shelves.
Three children, plus pets, are constantly running through this open, single-level ranch home. Toddler art sessions, spontaneous pool parties, and frequent out-of-town family opting for extended stays all had to be addressed when selecting finishes. While some refined materials were used, they had to withstand daily use. Picking materials that age and patina and show a history were paired with harder-wearing cabinet finishes and easily refinished flooring.
“We wanted a home that felt warm and welcoming; to be able to host families year-round and have everyone be comfortable. And this house is perfect for that,” reflects homeowner Kristen. “I still walk through and stare at the way the lines meet. One of my favorite things about working with her was how she imagined every part of each room being used and was so practical in her thought process, without sacrificing design.”
Quiet details like the customized white oak built-ins and integrated slatted walls grab your attention while simultaneously delineating each space. The rooms feel separate but are all connected through multiple sight lines, which is a must for a busy working mom with three young children. “We have a beautiful home that is functional and purposeful, as well. We feel so lucky to be able to raise our kids in this beautiful home.”
Subtle feminine Grace
Interiors Contributor Katie Mendrin Photographer Ellie Koleen
Creating graceful retreats where clients relish spending their time is key to a successful remodel. In this project, located in Hanford, California, two bedrooms were transformed to create a Primary Bathroom oasis and Laundry Room retreat. This client requested a peaceful space to enjoy getting ready each morning and a convenient space to do laundry. To begin, the Laundry Room was relocated from the opposite end of the house to adjoin the Primary Suite to create ease and convenience.
In the Primary Bath, a warm, creamy marble floor is mixed with the “design enthusiast favorite” zellige tile on the walls. Different patterns and shapes are swirled through the space, using similar color tones to create harmony. Warm taupe cabinets are adorned with organic shaped, brushed brass hardware, and topped with a classic white quartz countertop.
Lighting is always an integral part of the bathroom. In this space, general illumination is achieved with recessed can lights, while wall sconces flanking the mirrors add more ambient lighting. Above the jetted bathtub is a scalloped strie glass light fixture with understated metalwork, in a polished nickel finish. Custom-commissioned framed mirrors incorporate the polished nickel and brushed brass metals used throughout these rooms.
All spaces should be pleasant, including the Laundry Room. This area showcases how to use soft and subtle colors. The cabinets are painted a pearly mint and sit atop a multi-tone hexagon tile floor. Custom-designed built-in cabinetry around the washer and dryer creates abundant storage space. As a final touch, the incorporation of delightful sunflowers and a gentle olive tree truly represent the cherry on the cake for this project, which exudes tranquility.
By using similar bright and warm color tones, a cohesive design is created between the two spaces. Using different but soft color hues is what makes each space distinctive while blending seamlessly. The rooms reflect not only the beautiful property the house sits on but also the client’s warmhearted and bright personality. Complementing a client’s taste with a designer’s eye is what adds the extra intentional spark that makes a space unique.
Composing the right balance of color, texture, shape, and materials enables a space to be exceptional. Often, clients want to mix things up but aren’t quite sure how to achieve the look they desire. This is where an interior designer’s value comes in—their specialty is knowing how to mix elements to create cohesive interiors that clients are sure to love. Being involved in all aspects of the design and construction process of a remodel, such as this, ensures that a client’s vision becomes reality. Every space, even workhorse rooms like bathrooms and laundry areas, can be a retreat with subtle feminine grace given the right elements.

HAPPY PI DAY 3.14.2024
Recipes for Fruit & Cream-Filled Crusts in Celebration of Pi Day Editorial Director Lauren Barisic Photographer Don Dizon
Three
This pie is a delightful treat that transcends seasons—it’s brightening in spring, refreshing in summer, comforting in fall, and cheering in winter. Opt for slightly green bananas for frying as they maintain their shape well, balance the overall sweetness, and add texture to the filling. But if you like sweeter bananas or have ripe ones that need to be used up, those will still be fine. Keep in mind that cooking the rum will burn off some, if not most, of the alcohol content, though some traces may remain.
INGREDIENTS
Banana Rum Coconut Filling
1 premade pie shell
3 cups half-and-half
4 egg yolks
½ cup white sugar
¼ cup cornstarch
¼ tsp. salt
2 tbsp. butter, plus more for frying
2 large bananas
¾ cup rum
2 tbsp. brown sugar
3 tbsp. vanilla extract
1 cup sweetened coconut
Whipped Cream Topping
2 cups cream
¾ cup powdered sugar
¼ cup sweetened coconut
Vanilla extract to taste
INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Press the premade pie shell into a pie dish, then pierce the bottom with a few fork holes. Blind-bake until golden brown (for about 15 minutes). Set aside to cool.
Slice the bananas into quarter-inch slices. Bring a frying pan to medium-high heat. Add about a tablespoon of butter, along with the brown sugar and enough rum to coat the pan bottom. Once melted, carefully layer the banana slices in the pan and allow both sides to brown slightly. You may need to do this in batches and add more butter/brown sugar/rum as necessary. Arrange the browned bananas on the bottom of the pie shell. Pour the remaining rum into the frying pan, reduce to about a quarter of the original volume, and then remove it from heat.
In a medium saucepan, prepare the pastry cream. Whisk together the sugar, cornstarch, and salt in the saucepan. In a separate bowl, thoroughly whisk together the half-and-half and egg yolks. Gradually whisk a bit of the liquid mixture into the dry mixture. Once fully incorporated, add the remaining liquid and whisk together. Set the burner heat to medium-high and bring the liquid to a full boil for one minute, allowing it to thicken. Remove the pastry cream from the heat and whisk in the vanilla extract, butter, shredded coconut, and rum reduction. Pour this mixture over the browned banana layer. Allow the pie to cool completely, then refrigerate for at least 4 hours.
For the whipped cream topping, use an electric mixer to beat the cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until stiff. Toast the sweetened coconut in a frying pan. Once the pie is thoroughly chilled, top it with the whipped cream and garnish with the toasted coconut.

Peach Custard Pie
Most fruits work for this pie recipe. Naturally firmer varieties, like pear, hold up well when fresh, while fleshier produce, such as berries and stone fruit, tend to bake better when frozen. But given the recipe’s ease of assembly, embrace experimentation! Nutmeg really carries the flavor profile of this pie, so keep that in mind when pairing fruits. To keep the crust edges and nutmeg top from burning, bake the pie in the center of the oven, if not slightly lower.
INGREDIENTS
1 premade pie shell
2½ cups half-and-half
4 eggs
½ cup white sugar
¼ tsp. salt
1 tbsp. vanilla extract
¼ tsp. almond extract
2 cups sliced frozen peaches
Ground nutmeg
INSTRUCTIONS
Press the premade pie shell into a pie dish. Dust the interior of the shell with ground nutmeg. Chill the crust for an hour. Then, arrange the frozen peaches inside the chilled pie shell. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
In a saucepan, scald the half-and-half (the liquid should be just steaming). In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, salt, vanilla extract, and almond extract. To this mixture, add a bit of the hot half-and-half—whisking constantly—in three to four parts to make the custard.
Once thoroughly mixed, pour the custard into the pie dish through a mesh sieve. Dust the top of the custard generously with ground nutmeg. Bake it for approximately 30 minutes (until a knife comes out clean from the center). Allow the pie to cool completely, then chill it in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours.
Raspberry Lime Pie
When the weather warms up, few flavors are as quenching as citrus, and here it’s in pie form. Red, blush, or blonde raspberries each lend a unique tinge of color to this composition—gladly use whatever is in season. Just don’t plan to throw this recipe together on a whim because it is best served well-chilled. The finished product does keep beautifully in the fridge for a few days, making it a great make-ahead option that will surely wow any crowd.
INGREDIENTS
Graham Cracker Crust
1 sleeve graham crackers (finely crushed)
½ cup brown sugar
6 tbsp. unsalted butter
Raspberry Lime Filling
14 oz. sweetened condensed milk
¼ cup cream
4 egg yolks
½ cup lime juice
1 lime
1 small box of fresh raspberries
Whipped cream
INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Coat a pie dish with 1 tablespoon of butter. Melt the remaining 5 tablespoons of butter. In a medium mixing bowl, thoroughly combine the finely crushed graham crackers with the brown sugar and melted butter. The mixture should resemble wet sand. Press it into the prepared pie dish. Par-bake the crust for 15 minutes.
For the raspberry lime filling, begin by zesting the lime. Puree half of the raspberries. Separate the eggs. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the sweetened condensed milk, cream, egg yolks, key lime juice, lime zest, and pureed raspberries. Pour into the prepared crust, keep the crust edges covered, and bake for 30 minutes (until the center no longer jiggles when shaken).
Allow the pie to cool completely, then chill in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours. Finish with dollops of whipped cream topped with fresh raspberries.
