LETTER from the
O
EDITOR
ver the last five years, we at CVLUX have made it our mission to bring everything luxury to the Valley. In this issue, we celebrate everything home and garden. One of my favorite parts of this edition is the inclusion of our Home & Garden Profiles section. We have featured the top businesses and professionals in the community for all your home buying or selling needs. In this section, we cover everything from interior design to realtors and builders to give you the opportunity to compare and contrast, making your next home buying experience an easier one.
Mike Ragan, Interiors Editor, has worked tirelessly to bring you two phenomenal homes to get your creative juices flowing. Whether you want a taste of something traditional or maybe a little more modern, we have you covered. My favorite feature in this section is entitled Airy Eclectic, which profiles a gorgeous penthouse located in the desirable Hollywood Hills. Shades of camel and dark earth tones invite guests to relax and unwind. Andrea Towers, Features Editor, had the pleasure of interviewing Ever Caradine for our cover story. The profile, entitled Ever After, is a candid look at this stunning and glamorous actress. You may recognize Ever from the hit Amazon series Goliath, where she co-stars alongside Hollywood actor Billy Bob Thornton, who nabbed a Golden Globe for his performance in the series. Caradine opens up about everything, from her early days of acting in television, to how she juggles her flourishing career, all while being a mother. In case you missed it, we celebrated the annual Luxury Awards in January. This year the awards benefited the Art of Life Cancer Foundation. Over 500 people attended this year’s soirée. To see additional photos, please visit CVLUX.com. I encourage you to flip through the pages of this latest edition, and as you do, let your mind wander and explore all the possibilities that your home has to offer.

Gala of Wishes Havana Style On February 2nd, Make-A-Wish Central California’s “Gala of Wishes, Havana Style” was in full swing with mojitos, salsa dancers, a sizzling live auction, and a spirited Adopt-AWish. It was a time to celebrate the children and families whose lives have been changed by the power of a wish, and to honor the leaders and visionaries in our community who make these wishes possible. Last year, the organization granted 127 wishes to local children with critical illnesses, and there are more than 240 children currently waiting for their wishes.

2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 SUV
When compared to the Lexus RX 350, the new 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 SUV stands out as the smartest choice. With a starting price of $40,050*, the GLC 300 not only costs $3,170 less, but it gives you more in standard luxury and convenience features, gas mileage, storage and safety. eady or not, spring is upon us! Now is the time to trade in the chunky knits and wool jackets for sleeker lines and lighter pieces. This time of transition is great for layering pieces. Think maxi dresses with moto jackets or long skirts paired with light sweaters. Another option for refreshing your look is to mix in some new accessories, like a statement ring; it’s timeless and bold, no matter the temperature. Swap out blacks and browns for lighter neutrals, saving the brighter pops of color for later this year. Keep your style effortlessly cool with boyfriend jeans and sleek specs. Booties are still on trend, and loafers with grommets or perforated designs are easy to dress up or down. A great pair of shades not only compliments a look, they command an attitude; one you’ll want to wear all the way into summer.

“Women are like tea bags. They do not know how strong they are until they get into hot water.” —Eleanor Roosevelt
I remember hosting my first “high tea” at the age of 5. The distinguished guest list consisted of Mrs. Bearsy, Miss Lamby Ivy, and Mrs. Chocolate Cow, who sipped the finest tea and nibbled on the most delicious crumpets. We had stimulating conversation and laughed as we held our pinkies high. My mother would peek in and ask what was so funny…I replied, “Mrs. Bearsy just told us that Mr. Bearsy likes his porridge cold…not hot!” I still love to throw afternoon tea parties for my friends…just not the stuffy ones. The high tea is a celebration of all things delightful, delicious, pretty, and feminine. If you’ve never had a tea party, now is the time to embrace your inner Eloise, capture the vibe of Downton Abby, and host a beautiful tea party of your own. For thousands of years, our ancestors took tea leaves and buds and either placed them in a teapot or in a tea infuser. For tea-making connoisseurs, there is no comparison…it is loose-leaf tea or nothing; think of it as the French press coffee of the tea world. Sipping tea to classical music may seem refined, but it gets boring fast. Make sure your tea party is a success by incorporating some entertainment into the afternoon. There are professional tealeaf readers you can hire, or do your own research so you can perform the readings yourself.
TEAS English Breakfast Ceylon tea with a brisk flavor Darjeeling Indian black tea Formosa Oolong Slight nutty aroma with a delicate flavor Chamomile Chamomile with delicate sweet notes Mint Verbena Pure peppermint Rooibos Chai South African red bush with Indian spices
The best part of hosting a tea is setting the table; it sets the tone for your event! Make it the one well-themed feature that draws in everyone. This way, your choice of china can be any color, mixed or matched, and can be as opulent as you like. Even if you don’t have so much as a pot, don’t let that stop you. You may find your new hobby is searching for fine bone china and silver spoons…and if not, visit a specialized rental company who carries everything you need to create your desired look. Make sure you have sugar bowls and creamers, silver tongs, and cubed sugar, as all these accouterments add to your table decor. Finish the table with romantic and elegant flowers, such as roses and peonies. Greet your guests with champagne garnished garnished with an extra touch, like a sprig of lavender. If the weather calls for something more chilled and refreshing, set out pitchers of iced tea as well as lemonade. Every tea party I’ve ever hosted, or been a guest thereof, has been memorable because they speak to the girl and woman within.
Remember … if you can boil water, you can make a great cup of tea! What would a tea party be without finger food?! That being said, it can be very time consuming to create a menu with so many small bites. Not everyone is the culinary queen of her kitchen, and that is why there is no shame in sourcing out many of the delectable bites you will be serving. I suggest leaving the baking to the bakeries, since there are so many wonderful patisseries to choose from, and take on the tea sandwiches. If you’re uncertain about guests’ dietary needs, include vegetarian and gluten-free options. “There. I did it!” Ever Carradine proclaims proudly. We’ve just started our phone interview, but her two-year-old old son has interrupted the conversation, as little boys are wont to do. I wait patiently as she diffuses the situation easily and competently, and even though we’ve only started talking less than five minutes ago, in that singular moment, it’s easy to see why she’s such a great mother.
For Carradine, that competency and ability to “roll with the punches” is what helps define her. Part experience (her expansive resume spans work in both film and television) and part family legacy (she’s the daughter of Robert Carradine, granddaughter of John Carradine, and the cousin of Martha Plimpton), both converge to make Carradine one of the most dependable and successful actresses working today. And while she may come from a famous family, she also didn’t run to the stage the moment she could walk. “I think I saw it as it was something that I secretly wanted to do, and later, when I got into college, I found on my own that I enjoyed—and if I could make a living out of it, how lucky I would be,” said Carradine of her trajectory into the acting world. Focused and determined to forge her own path, she entered Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon
with the intent of being an anthropology major. Midway through college, however, she switched her major to theater, and started landing roles in popular 90s television shows, such as Diagnosis: Murder and Tracey Takes On… before landing her first recurring guest role on Party of Five. An equally memorable guest appearance on Veronica’s Closet followed, and in 2003, she landed her first regular series role in Lucky, a cable drama about a professional poker player. “I think something that really helped me was knowing that it’s a job,” mused Carradine of her decision and how her upbringing shaped her unique view of the profession. “I guess now it’s so different with social media, but back then, it was very much associated with glamor. I grew up on film sets and TV sets, so I always understood long hours, and that everyone does their part.”

rom film (Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Dead & Breakfast) to network television (24, House, Will & Grace) to cable television (Shameless, Rizzoli & Isles) to streaming outlets like Hulu and Amazon (Runaways, Goliath), Carradine has been all over the map. But while most actors would be focused on settling into one kind of entertainment medium or making it big in a starring role, she simply enjoys working. It’s a refreshing thing to hear, especially in an industry dominated by the pressure to be successful. “I’ve been all over the place, right?” she asks with a laugh when I start to list her credits. “And you know what I think is exciting about it? I’ve gotten to work with so many different people. Everybody—actors, directors, EPs. I get to see how everyone does their thing and through that, [develop] my own style and tricks to acting a little better and things to avoid. Working on shows, some for short amounts of time and some shows for longer, I just get to reconnect with so many more people.” Carradine credits this experience with her longevity in the industry, adding, “It all comes back to knowing my job is special. I’m so privileged to be able to do what I do for a living, but I know it’s a job and all the people there are doing the same thing I am—working long hours away from their families, eating weird catered food.” Still, Carradine is only human, and there are some big things that she has on her career bucket list. “I would love to do a film in Europe—that’s something I have not done. I’ve done a lot of snowy elements,” she adds with a laugh. “I don’t need to do that anymore!” When I talk to Carradine, she’s not only dealing with parenting duties at home—she’s in deep dealing with parenting duties on screen, playing the role of Janet Stein in Hulu’s critically acclaimed Runaways, the series based on the popular Marvel comic book. “It was crazy,” Carradine recalls of the whirlwind audition that landed her on the show. “I was just finishing [The] Handmaid’s Tale, and I flew home from Toronto on Wednesday and had the audition in my email to go in Thursday. So I prepared as quickly as I could, and at that point, it wasn’t called Runaways— everything was dummy-named, because there’s so many secrets involved. So I auditioned on Thursday and on Friday I tested—on Friday night I knew I had it, and by Monday, I went to the table read. I was jetlagged and had finished this one incredible working experience, and just moved into the next one.”

hile the kids on Runaways may be the ones with superpowers, their respective parents have their own chilling secrets. That’s on-screen, though. Off-screen, everyone is a big, happy family… and no, Carradine assures me, that’s not a super-
“I have to give a big shout out to Patrick Rush, our casting director, and Josh Schwartz and Jeph Loeb,” she explains. “Often on a pilot, someone gets recast for whatever reason. And this show, all sixteen of us, we shot the pilot and continued the show. The odds of that are insane.” Carradine goes on, telling me, “We all met at the bowling alley after we got cast— all the parents and the children…we kind of all gravitated towards each other and we bonded quickly and authentically. I’ve always believed that relationship translated onto the screen in a really exciting way.” Since Carradine is a mother and decidedly family-oriented, I was curious if that influenced her choices for playing a parent. Or maybe she read the comics, to get a feel of how she should act towards her teenage son? “I read the comics a little,” Carradine admits. “But the same thing happened when I was reading Handmaid’s Tale—I was reading while I was shooting, and then everything got jumbled and I couldn’t remember if the parts in the book were what we were supposed to be shooting. But I trust Josh and Stephanie [Savage] completely, so I just kind of went with what was on the page, and then built it out the way I build all characters out in my head.” On Runaways, the secrets and dark exploits create a dangerous environment. On The Handmaid’s Tale, the landscape is as different as night and day. But both shows don’t steer away from the uncomfortable, whether it’s women’s rights or parenting while being part of a cult-like group. “I think Elizabeth Moss said it best [in her Golden Globes speech]— they always wanted The Handmaid’s Tale to be relevant, but not quite that relevant. But there were definitely nights that we were filming and it was all during the debates and the build-up to the election,” says Carradine, who marched alongside Margaret Atwood, cast member Yvonne Strahovski, and costume designer Ane Crabtree at the Toronto Women’s March last year; she would then watch the debates in costume on her iPhone while scenes were being set up. “In Episode 9, there’s a very big scene on a bridge that took two days to film. One of those days is the last day of Obama’s presidency, and one of those days was the first day of Trump’s. It was nuts.”
Thankfully, Carradine’s tenure in the industry means that she knows how to leave work at work, which allows her to be present with her family when she’s not on set. As the mother of two, it’s important for her, she says, to be present. “Our kids are 2 and 7, and the 2-year-old is a bit of wildcard, so we like to eat together when I can,” says Carradine. “My daughter loves to help me cook even though she’s a really picky eater, and my son just wants to do whatever his older sister does. We like to do a little dance party with the kids sometimes. If it’s nice outside, we like to let the kids play in the garden and my husband and I will maybe make a cheese plate and have a glass of wine. We’ve been trying to agree to do an hour of putting our phones on airplane mode and not think about that.” “Oh, I’m terrible at it,” I offer, freely admitting my dependency on technology. “When you do do it, you realize how addicted you are to going back and checking it,” agrees Carradine. “We try to be really aware of it, but we’re only human.” As our conversation draws to a close, I ask Carradine what people would be surprised to know about her. I’m all about learning quirky, secretive things about people I interview, because I like forcing people to think of fun things that the public might not otherwise be aware of.
B
ut it appears I’ve stumped her, as Carradine thinks hard before responding. “I’m tall?” she starts. “Maybe people don’t know that I’m tall; I’m 5’9”. I speak a little German. I did show jumping and horseback riding, and that was a big part of my childhood.” (Carradine’s mother, Susan Snyder, was a horse trainer’s assistant.) Suddenly, something sparks her to remember a recent interview question. “They asked when I bought my house and I said 17 years ago,” she says proudly. “I’ve lived in the same house since I was 25 years old. It was the first house I bought.” See? Carradine is just that dependable. And we’re very thankful she is, because we like having her around.
COASTAL CONTEMPORARY JEFF TROTTER RENOVATES A VACATION HOME ON CALIFORNIA’S BALBOA ISLAND
INTERIORS EDITOR MIKE RAGAN PHOTOGRAPHY JEKE RUELAS INTERIOR DESIGN JEFF TROTTER, JEFF TROTTER DESIGN
T
his Balboa Island Beach vacation home, in Newport Beach, California, required a gut renovation. Designer Jeff Trotter wanted to create a timeless yet transitional home that was effortlessly chic and sophisticated, while still being livable and inviting. He selected rich, espresso-stained, handdistressed oak hardwood flooring, and designed custom bead-board picture frame paneling with tongue and groove on the ceilings. Jeff painted it bright white, to give the home a contemporary coastal aesthetic that would withstand the test of time. Employing a neutral palette of white, navy blue, grey, and beige keeps the space bright, light, and fresh. Jeff said, “I regularly gravitate towards refined and tonal palettes that invoke a visual sense of calm, but also find it important to include high contrast color pops of black for depth and interest. Texture is always a priority for me when designing spaces as well. I love contrasting textures that are pleasing to both the eye and to the touch. In this project, mixing varying textures, like linen, jute, denim, leather, cashmere, velvet, marble, wood, and iron, was an opportunity for me to create real dimension within each room, without feeling chaotic or overwhelming to the eye. A Jeff Trotter Design custom designed rolled arm sofa is covered in a white Perennial denim slipcover. He also designed the two spindle chairs finished in ebony stain and Perennial beige linen.
“I wanted to keep the kitchen quite clean and simple since it’s open to the living and dining areas,” comments Jeff. He chose classic shaker cabinetry, finished in the same white as the wall and ceiling paneling. Honed Carrara marble was used for the backsplash and countertops, and for fun, a contrasting grey island. “This house is all about effortless and elevated beach living for a family that loves to really take advantage of everything Newport Beach has to offer and I think the home I designed really reflects that.” Vintage dining chairs surround a glass and iron dining table from William Sonoma Home. All hanging light fixtures are vintage finds that were refurbished and rewired.

If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door.
MY COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT I have always enjoyed giving back to the community that has given me so much. Currently I am serving as the President of Philanthropy Inspired By the Needs of our Community (PINC), an organization that has given over $500,000 back to Fresno and the surrounding areas. I also serve as the President of the board at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, which brings you one of Fresno’s favorite events, Greek Fest. OPA! THE FUTURE OF REAL ESTATE Real estate in the Central Valley is still one of the most affordable in the state of California. With that in mind, the real estate market should continue to thrive. There is a low inventory of homes, which has been creating multiple offer situations. There has also been an abundance of cash offers. Although interest rates have been low for many years, this year we will see interest rates rise. Overall, Fresno and the Central Valley remains a great place to invest, live, and raise a family.

A graduate of California State University, Fresno, with a B.A. in 2010, she is also passionate about promoting the arts in the community, and has served on boards for Friends of the Arts and the Junior Company Foundation.
OUR HISTORY Hyatt Real Estate was founded by my parents, Tom and Angie Hyatt, in 1992. As a child, real estate was always a topic at the dinner table, so I grew up learning the ins and outs of the business. Now our company is not only larger, as we have added agents, but thriving. Hyatt Real Estate was credited with selling the most expensive home in the Valley in 2017. WHAT I’M BEST KNOWN FOR Listening to my clients and catering to their needs. T
esoro Viejo is an innovative master-planned community spanning across 1,600 acres of gently rolling hills and vistas set at the foot of Little Table Mountain. Located at Highway 41 just past Avenue 14, minutes north of River Park Shopping Center. Taking its cues from the land with an abundance of distinctive topography, arroyos, and natural habitats in an inspiring landscape, Tesoro Viejo was designed so that community and the natural world are connected, enhanced, and nurtured. The new community is a partnership between The McCaffrey Group and Lyles Diversified, both trusted local family companies with deep roots in California’s Central Valley.
Life. Unprecedented. AMENITIES Discover nature in your own backyard. Preserved natural open spaces with scenic plateaus, corridors of riparian habitat, and arroyos wind throughout the community. Take your daily walk or bike ride along miles of trails that connect each residential village and lead to neighborhood parks, recreational areas, Hillside School, and the Town Center. Relax at the resort-style clubhouse/recreation center that includes a multi-use pool, cabanas, children’s pool and kids splash pad. INTRODUCING HILLSIDE VILLAGE The first of nine residential villages to open at Tesoro Viejo, Hillside Village is designed for walking and savoring. A wide variety of home styles and sizes will serve a range of lifestyle needs for a true blending of generations. Hillside Village is currently under construction, with Model Homes opening this fall. LOVE OF LEARNING Nestled within Hillside Village lives the new TK-8 Hillside School, served by the award-winning Chawanakee Unified School District. Construction on the state-of-the-art campus began in February, and is anticipated to open this August. Hillside School will pride itself on delivering a rigorous educational program, with an emphasis on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), as well as exploration programs that give students an opportunity to learn about careers in the medical field and biotechnologies. THE MAIN HUB There’s a feeling you only get when you visit the Main Street of a small town, and Tesoro Viejo is building on that timeless appeal. Where everything you need and desire is in one place. THE MATHER METHOD
LAURA MATHER FRESNO, CALIFORNIA
T
he Mather Method takes the song and dance out of your home sale—whether you are selling or buying—and replaces it with something much more reliable: the art of marketing, versus just selling, and the science to back it up. My story could be much like your own. No entitlements, I have worked my way from entry-level property manager to a national Vice President of Sales and Marketing, to where I am now as one of Fresno’s top producers.
Be open to where good intel and a fresh perspective will take you. YOUR SPECIALTY My focus is always on my clients’ needs. I have a diverse client base with needs in every spectrum of the market. CAREER-DEFINING MOMENT There have been several career-defining moments at different stages in my career. The most memorable, by far, was during our company’s IPO (UCP Inc.), where we rang the opening bell at the NYSE on July 18th, 2013. Adding to the moment...being the only female at the podium. Now that I have transitioned from Corporate America to being independent and self employed, one of the greatest moments was recently being voted the Central Valley’s BEST REALTOR, January 2018. This is an absolute honor I will cherish and remember always. Just being nominated validates my hard work and love for what I do, but to win the votes of so many clients means I may have made a difference in their lives. That is the highest compliment of all! WHAT SETS YOU APART? My vast real estate experience. I have a well-rounded understanding of the market and the industry as a whole. The Mather Method is the art and science to a successful home sale! I work very hard at delivering high-quality deliverables on a consistent basis. Each client’s goals are unique, and it’s my job to determine that and to find a solution to their needs. CENTRAL VALLEY MARKET TRENDS AS OF JANUARY 2018 · Residential inventory down 2.2% · Median sales price is $253,000 · Cumulative days on market is 44 · Interest rates are set to rise · “New Tax Code will not have a negative impact on the real estate market, as most households will see an overall tax cut, potential buyers are likely to put that savings towards their home.” —Calculated Risk Reports

Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you will land among the stars. —Les Brown OUR HISTORY RYAN Real Estate was founded by Ryan Ramirez, a local real estate professional with over 16 years of experience selling homes and investment property in the Central Valley. The team at RYAN RE is comprised of some of the best minds in real estate. BEST ADVICE WHEN SELLING YOUR HOME When selling your home, it is important to work with a real estate professional that provides all the details it takes to get the best return on your property. Get a clear understanding of what homes in your area are selling for and how they compare to yours (remember, sites like Zillow don’t show the entire picture). Ask about staging techniques, that will help your home better stand out, marketing considerations, open house schedule, and make sure to properly disclose all details associated with the home.
R
YAN Real Estate is one of the leading real estate companies in the Central Valley. Ryan and the team at RYAN Real Estate are passionate about representing our clients to the highest standard. We take pride in delivering a wonderful client experience!
BEST ADVICE WHEN BUYING A HOME Before going out and looking, make sure to have the financial side all ready to go. Meet with a reputable/qualified lender to get pre-qualified for the best possible loan. Try to narrow down specific areas of interest, school districts, home and lot size, pool or no pool, etc. When talking with your real estate professional, try to be as specific as possible when describing your wish list. Open communication with your realtor really helps when searching for that perfect home. TRENDS IN OUR MARKET PLACE Mortgage rate projections seem to be on a minimal steady increase. We will continue to see low inventory, which can mean continuing competition for homes. Home owners will see steady appreciation—projection is 4% give or take. 2018 is a great time to buy or sell in the Central Valley!

Bringing the Central Valley a touch of elegance, luxury and style. STEPHANIE M. BEDROSIAN WHAT I LOVE ABOUT MY PROFESSION Where do I start?! I get to work with my some of my favorite people on the planet. My mother, younger sister, and Mary. My “job” (Buyer and Visual Director) is my hobby. I love finding treasures and necessary luxuries that I know will excite my clientele. Finding the right furniture and accessories to elevate the “everyday life” is key. Personal shopping and home styling for clients that have become my friends is the most fun.

SVP Style is a place where the insanely busy, modern woman can check a ton of things off her list, while taking in style inspiration and usually a breather… It is calming for women to know they can come in and purchase any type of gift item, compile their bridal registry, prepare for a dinner party, and potentially style their entire home or office— all with personalized service. Don’t feel left out, guys! We can help you check off your lists, too!
WHAT I LOVE ABOUT MY PROFESSION I “fell” into my world accidentally in my senior year of high school. I was told I had to take something to fill my last credit requirement, and all that was available was floral design. I choose the word “fell” because I immediately fell in love with this art. Life is celebrated with flowers on so many levels, from elation to devastation. How I design the blooms is interpretive of the emotion for the message they bear. The luxury of having this plethora of design projects is one of the most exhilarating aspects of my job. One day, a union of a beautiful couple on the cliff of the Pacific Ocean, laden in blooms. The next day, twins born and vases of pink and blue hydrangea, lilac, roses and tulips fill my design table. The next morning, I’m with Stephanie and we are measuring a client’s living room for a new sofa and area rug. Who wouldn’t want this job?
STEPHANIE M. BEDROSIAN MY INSPIRATION My Grandmother Isabel was a Lead Buyer for the McMahan’s Furniture Company for over 20 years when it was not fashionable for women to work, let alone hold this type of position. I find this so funny/crazy—this is what she was really good at… and with no idea in my mind 10 years ago of how my company would evolve, here I am doing the same thing. It is a nice feeling to have that in common with one I miss, love, and look up to.
MARY C. PAPALEO WHAT I COULDN’T LIVE WITHOUT I absolutely could not live without my family. They are my world. Everything I do is for them. They are my number one choice to hang out with when I get any free time. I am composed of a little piece of each of my family members. Every song I hear, every bite I taste, every smile or tear I see, they are all a part of me.

VLUX’s Donna Kaczmarski invited five local ladies to join her for the fifth installment of Shake+Stir, held at the updated Vino Grille and Spirits. Vino’s owner’s, Chuck and Jen Van Fleet, arranged a sample menu, comprised of three cocktails, two appetizers, two entrées, and two desserts, for Jane Avekian-Tamberi, Dr. Kathleen Behr, Annie Foreman, Jenny Kasparian Hoekstra, Ayde Mendibles, and Donna to enjoy in the main bar area of this intimate restaurant. Discussion on the best uses for coconut oil, effective morning rituals, health, and favored “me-time” options ensued that clearly expressed the ladies’ unanimous appreciation for personal wellness. Though this is the first time these women had met, you’d think they were life-long friends. Yet Jenny swore she knew Annie somehow, but couldn’t quite pinpoint exactly where from… Our tentative server, Daniel, ushered the ladies to a table set with a lovely floral arrangement of anemones, lilies, roses, and dainty flowering foliage atop a bed of spring greenery, surrounding a trio of floating gold candles, made by Simply Flowers’ Mariah Walton.

f you’re looking for a place to eat in Fresno with a patio, add Vino Grille and Spirits to your list. Another perk; “I thought it was just wine, but it’s a full bar!” Kathleen delightfully observed. So even though this is a wine-centric restaurant, with over 40 wines available by the glass, you can bring your die-hard mixer friends with you and know there is something for everyone.
members. “They take money from me every month, then I forget to pick [the wine] up, and then I have a stock pile waiting for me! It’s amazing!” Customers have the option to choose between Vino’s “Black Bag Club” (for $40) or “Cellar Club” (for $80) memberships, which automatically renew monthly. Details for each option can be found at VinoGrille.com. Eager guests may choose to register at either the restaurant or online.
I believe the saying goes: “Wine before liquor, never been sicker. Liquor before wine, you’ll be fine.” Maybe I adapted that phrase from beer, but whatever…it works. And the first cocktail had both! Daniel immediately served the Summer Citrus White Sangria, composed of Crown Regal Apple, apple juice, Pinot Grigio, and a splash of citrus. It’s “so refreshing; fresh, crisp, not too sweet,” Jane mused of the sangria. “Perfect for spring.”
Vino is known for their bruschetta assortments, which have stayed with the menu since the Van Fleets added hardier offerings in 2011. Customers can choose from six varieties, or, for the indecisive, opt for a Vino Signature Trio. The Mozzarella Bruschetta staple is an assembly of fresh, melted mozzarella, tomato slices, basil leaves, balsamic reduction, olive oil drizzle, and salt and pepper atop toasted French bread. Jenny loved the use of “full-bodied basil” atop a “smooth cheese.”
Walking through this restaurant is meant to emulate proceeding into a wine cellar…the moody, dim kind, with rustic, exposed beams and stone floors, that transports you to a winery somewhere in the middle of California’s scenic rolling hills. You know that feeling of utter relaxation you get when you make the drive to Paso Robles and walk into your favorite wine-tasting room? It’s like that, sans the worry of how you’ll make it to the next winery. Maybe you’ll consider finally enrolling in sommelier classes? I sure did. But if adding another item on your “To-Do List” really isn’t an option, just join the Vino Grille and Spirits Wine Club. CVLUX Editor in Chief, David Manning, shared that he is one of over 725
Looking to try something a little different? Order the crispy Portobello Fries, made of beer-battered Portobello mushroom strips, and served with garlic aioli. “These are heavenly!” Annie proclaimed with delight. “And the dipping sauce…wow.” A bottle of Schramsberg Sparkling Rosé also made it to the table while the appetizers went around. For some reason, this implored Annie to reveal that she is the writer of “Real Housewife of Fresno” blog. (Note that these ladies love the BRAVO Housewives franchise.) “That’s you!?” Jenny exclaimed in excitement. “That’s where I know you from!” Mystery solved.

The Cucumber Blood Orange Cosmopolitan was made with Hendrick’s Gin, Solerno Blood Orange Liqueur, and fresh cucumber. Ayde admitted that it was particularly quenching; another “wonderful spring cocktail.” By far, the biggest hit of the night was the Fig Pizza. Ayde described it best as a “beautiful blend of sweet, salt, and creaminess.” Herb oil, spinach, manchego cheese, goat cheese, prosciutto, and fig jam come together upon a thin, crispy crust that can stand on its own merit. Annie put it more simply; “It’s an explosion of flavor!” And as an avid jam maker, Kathleen was intrigued by the rather sweet fig jam.
A
s the house-made Acorn Squash Ravioli arrived at the table, Jane, a passionate cook and entertainer, couldn’t contain her excitement. Made with meatless Bolognese and a pumpkin seed garnish, it’s a Seasonal House Made Pasta offering. Jane said this dish was “out of this world” good, and Jenny added that it truly tasted homemade. The Salted Crown cocktail was a perfect way to tie the following sweets together. A mixture of Salted Caramel Crown and Martinelli’s Sparkling Cider, garnished with a dried apple crisp, the ladies agreed that it was mild enough that even non-whiskey drinkers could relish this sweet concoction. Basically, it’s a liquid caramel apple.
Chuck came over as the Homemade Twix Bar was being presented. He revealed that his wife, Jen, makes them herself, and that it takes her three days to create the dessert. “You mean crack!?” Annie shouted. The crispy cookie base is covered in a layer of dark chocolate, sprinkled with sea salt, and served with homemade caramel ice cream. Quite addicting, indeed. Vino’s House Made Bread Pudding is made using sea salt caramel, and topped with house-made whiskey sauce and whipped cream. “So good, so much,” conceded Jenny; it’s more than enough to share. By the end of the night, a charity event was in the works…perhaps that was the accumulation of the four drinks sitting in front of each lady speaking. Three of the six ladies admitted to dancing on bar tops and tables, and everyone admitted their guilty pleasure. A mutual love of travel, especially to France in the spring, immerged as another common interest. Though they may not have all agreed on the effectiveness of coconut oil to solve all wellness concerns, everyone consented to what Donna revealed as the origin of Shake+Stir—good food and drink has a delightful way of bringing good people together.

Developing the southeastern end of Madera is the ultimate example of regional planning, as it is the geographical connection point to the neighboring Fresno/Clovis area. Southeastern Madera includes the area around Valley Children’s Hospital to the west, following the San Joaquin River at the south, and then up to Millerton Lake in the northeast.
Riverstone and Tesoro Viejo: The Future of the Greater Fresno Area in Southeastern Madera
nvision crossing the San Joaquin River into Madera County, while heading north on Highway 41 from Fresno, where rolling groves of olive trees used to stand west of the 41. Cattycorner to the now iconic “Stars and Stripes Barn,” the Riverstone community is shaping up. Tesoro Viejo, set to stretch about two miles north of the Barn to the San Joaquin, is not far behind in construction. This building is the beginning of a massive undertaking by Madera County to manifest the next logical step in regional expansion.
The Rio Mesa Plan is the largest land area designated for development in the Central San Joaquin Valley. Other developments include Gunner Ranch West, near Valley Children’s Hospital, which should consist of 2,840 houses and nearly 4 million square feet of commercial and medical space. North Shore, on Millerton Lake, will allow for 2,966 houses, along with 206 acres designated for commercial, institutional, and industrial use. While communities like these, and others within the vicinity, are ready to commence construction within the next couple years, Riverstone and Tesoro Viejo have already broken ground. Riverstone is located on the west side of Highway 41, straddling Avenue 12. A long list of obstacles prevented any plan from reaching actualization until 2010, when Riverstone Development, LLC acquired the 7,000-acre plot, 2,000 acres of which were entitled for development. By 2013, design plans were in the works, and construction began in 2015. Now, there’s a waiting list for homebuyers because the builders simply cannot keep up with the demand, despite building at a rate of 25-30 homes a month. Valley residents are eager to take advantage of the offerings in Riverstone’s eight districts: Lodge, Market, Civic, Town Center, Grove, Park, Club, and River. They will boast walkable neighborhoods, multiple community clubhouses, retail, commercial, and office space, 115 acres of parks and open space, hiking and biking trails, schools, a dog park, access to the river nearby, and even a community farm, which will hold “Open Farm” events year-round exclusively for Riverstone members. The San Joaquin River will be the highlight of this community, but Root Creek will run across the development itself. In fact, Riverstone just received the prestigious Gold Award for 2018 Best Master Planned Community of the Year, amid seven Silver Awards and another Gold Award, by The Nationals—the nation’s largest competition for new-home communities.

Currently, McCaffrey Homes, Lennar Central Valley, D.R. Horton, and Century Communities are the first to begin construction at Riverstone, but as development continues, so will the list of homebuilders; there will be something for every taste, at every budget. D.R. Horton’s “Stillwater” and “The Summit” neighborhoods at Riverstone will be available to view within the next few months. Ten new floor plans will be offered, ranging from 1,700 to 3,200 square feet, with 25 exterior style variations to choose from. Each home will have either a patio or courtyard. Two collections of model homes, “Santerra” and “Ivy,” from McCaffrey are available to tour just inside the community’s entrance; be prepared to be blown away by what’s offered. The “Idea Room” in Santerra’s Residence Three is a particular favorite. Some customizations are available, and the level of detail already makes each home feel unique. Lennar’s “Cambridge Collection” of homes is also available for viewing. Some feature their NextGen plans, which include smaller, connected living spaces, with their own entrances, so as to accommodate in-laws and
boomerang kids. It really is like getting two homes for the price of one, and an excellent design for extended families. Then again, Riverstone is all about cultivating a lifestyle and building a future; children are just that. The first of three elementary schools in Riverstone opens in 2021, and land has been allotted for a high school; students will feed into Liberty High School in the mean time. Because Madera mandated that all incoming communities must stand on their own, steps were taken to address water challenges. The Root Creek Water District has a plan that will provide more water than necessary to meet Riverstone’s demand. Tesoro Viejo has even created its own on-site, sustainable water and wastewater treatment facility, Tesoro Viejo Master Mutual Water Company. Tesoro Viejo is the crown jewel of the Rio Mesa Plan. In fact, Tesoro Viejo fittingly means “old treasure” in Spanish. Also bordering Highway 41, it will span east to the San Joaquin River, set at the foot of Little Table Mountain. The McCaffrey Group signed on as Master Developers in 2004, in partnership

with Lyles Diversified. The 1,600-acre site broke ground in October 2017, and will eventually include 5,190 homes. Life. Unprecedented. (Tesoro Viejo’s motto) envelopes its ideal. Tesoro Viejo is all about blended generations, where residents can live, work, and play, all while maintaining the terrain, so the natural world enhances and connects with the surrounding community. Tesoro Viejo is hoping to set a new standard by exemplifying that living with nature provides a more wholesome and healthy lifestyle. “There really is nothing like this in Fresno,” said Karen McCaffrey, Vice President of Tesoro Viejo Development, Inc. Honestly, there really is nothing like this in the Central Valley. Even the colors of Tesoro Viejo’s logo was designed to reflect the earthen, rusty clay that is synonymous with the region. There’s also been talk of allowing sheep and goats to be herded within the community. Tesoro Viejo residents will enjoy preserved natural open space right in their own backyard. Parcels around the property boast wildlife that should thrive amid the surrounding development. “Bob has unofficially named three places already! There’s Vulture Rock, Beaver Pond, and Buck Meadow,” Karen McCaffrey said of her husband. Fingers crossed that those nicknames are made official. What makes Tesoro Viejo truly different is its infrastructure-first plan. Residents at Tesoro Viejo will be served by Madera County’s seventh fire station, and its own Sheriff’s substation. The newly built Tesoro Viejo Master Mutual Water Company will enable on-site water and waste processing. Tesoro Viejo Development even had the foresight to establish an on-site tree nursery 10–15 years ago; some 10,000 trees are planted there, including 13 species—like the palm trees that will be used as ½-mile markers along the trails. Construction is underway for a new TK-8th grade Hillside School that will open for the 2018-2019 school year this August. Part of the Chawanakee Unified School District, Hillside School is in the heart of Hillside Village. The school will have a college and career exploration program that gives students an opportunity to learn about careers in the medical
field and biotechnologies. The Bobcat’s groundbreaking ceremony took place on February 1st, where inaugural principal Jared Pierce spoke to the strengths and excitement of implementing a science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) curriculum. “New schools attract forward-thinking and enthusiastic teachers,” fourth-generation North Fork resident and parent Jack Thornburg said of the search to find teachers who will make Hillside one of the most cutting-edge schools in this region. While McCaffrey is the Master Developer, and will be building in Tesoro Viejo, other builders will join the project when homes start to go up. And McCaffrey will continue to implement their EarthSense program, which builds on the sustainable notion that runs throughout the community. Currently, Hillside Village and Town Center, the first of nine villages, are under construction. Model homes should be available to tour this fall. Hillside alone will include 800 houses, while the Town Center will have mixed-use rentals and lofts in a more urban setting. This contains a Welcome Center and an Event Lawn for concerts, farmer’s markets, and holiday events. Eventually, the nine villages will be connected by a vast network of trails. Tesoro Viejo is cultivating an environment that promotes and encourages physical activity and involvement. The Boardwalk, designed so kids can walk and ride their bikes over a meadow to school, is part of three miles of trails in Tesoro Viejo that have been specifically designed to lead directly to Hillside School. If neighboring Fresno and Clovis get on board, the trail network has the potential to interconnect up to 50 miles. These new developments aren’t about competition for the River Park area, or Fresno and Clovis proper; they are about unifying it to form something bigger. Within the next 15 years of build-out, approximately 50,000 people are expected to be cumulatively living in Gunner Ranch West, North Shore, Riverstone, and Tesoro Viejo. While the San Joaquin River has long been treated as a mere boundary, it will now be the essence of a brand new way of living. Riverstone and Tesoro Viejo are demonstrating that they are more than the future of the greater Fresno metropolitan area; they are the face of a sustainable, all-inclusive, highly interactive community.

WHAT’S YOUR STYLE?
A World Of Answers Feature Editor Roseanne Guaglianone
It’s okay—you can have more than one style or one answer, just as many different qualities and expressions make you a complete, unique person. Try this in an existing room or office. Take your favorite key pieces in a room. Say, one is a traditional sofa like the Bernhardt chesterfield (#1); many people may have a piece similar to this and thought it couldn’t go with anything else but something just like it. But it can! It can work with contemporary, transitional, or global styles among others.
1
To demonstrate, let’s add the Bernhardt bar cabinet (#2) and metal stool (#3) to that chesterfield sofa in your room. Then put this wonderful Loloi rug (#4) on the floor, add the Bernhardt coffee table (#5) and Bulat lamp (#6) ... and voila! You have a perfectly balanced blend of styles.
4
So when someone asks “What’s your style?” tell them, “Me!” and then invite them over to show them how a room can reveal the many dimensions of you. *Note: all products shown are available at Hemisphere Home.

AIRY ECLECTIC HAWLIE OHE MIXES IT UP IN THIS HOLLYWOOD HILLS PENTHOUSE
INTERIORS EDITOR MIKE RAGAN INTERIOR DESIGN HAWLIE OHE, WHITE SANDS INTERIORS
In the entry, hand-laid wood veneer wall panels, in a sunburst pattern, by Maya Romanoff act as the perfect backdrop for a pair of golden bronze vessels by Patricia Roach and console table by Julian Chichester. A framed photograph by Rob Lang is from his Dry Dock series.
W
hen Hawlie Ohe of White Sands Interiors was asked to design this 2-bedroom penthouse for a Hollywood producer, his foremost request was for a space that embodied the relaxed, California coastal energy that is distinctively different from his Bridgehampton beach property in New York. The home is situated at the base of the Hollywood Hills with panoramic views of the famed Sunset Strip. Hawlie used a combination of natural materials, plush textiles, and organic shapes to create subtle coastal nuances, without feeling overtly “beachy.” The existing kitchen was surprisingly dark, despite the incredible light beaming through its opposite windows. Hawlie’s solution was to clad the walls and backsplash in hand-cut mirrored tiles with an antique finish, so as to obscure the reflection while still refracting light throughout the space. A custom Rags zinc-topped dining table and Rags leather banquette provided additional layers of texture. Hawlie said, “The cherry on top of this jaw-dropping moment comes from the Lumiere chandelier from Jean de Merry.”
In the living room, a jute rug imported from India lays the groundwork for a large, custom-built sectional and chairs by Rags, and a show-stopping sunburst oak and ebonized metal coffee table by Jean-Louis Deniot that feels more like a piece of art than furniture. The tabletop sculpture by Alexander Lamont is inspired by woven bamboo.
For the master bedroom, Hawlie chose a grasscloth wallcovering by Weitzner, a custom tufted bed by Rags, and custom nightstands by WestArt Woodwork. The rug is from Lawrence of LaBrea. Opposite: Custom leather club chair by Rags sits next to a side table from Palacek.
The guest room is where Hawlie chose to emphasize more of a playful beach lifestyle with a custom Rags raffia bed, side table from Global Views, a Lawrence of LaBrea rug, and colorful art.

o bold for your home. 2018 is all about color! As our world gets smaller, influences that we once thought foreign and exotic are becoming accessible and easily found in our marketplace. Pattern and texture play a key role in adding drama to your interiors, and deep, saturated color evokes a feeling of passion and daring. We are not talking about delicate pastels here; I’m talking fire and ice! Try layering the uncharacteristic color combination of red, saffron, and blue and see if that raises your temperature. 1.
