14 MILES OF WALKING/BIKING TRAILS
Living at Tesoro Viejo, feeling free isn’t about getting far away. It’s about enjoying everything right outside your door. Here, you can walk to a farmer’s market and your kids can walk to school—or to the pool. There are fourteen miles of trails to trek or ride, and four hundred acres of open space to explore and enjoy. The neighborly connection of a shared bite, cup of coffee, or glass of wine is just a stroll away, too. All part of a notion that a full life never has to lead to an empty tank. Come see for yourself.

Gala of Wishes 2023, Make-A-Wish’s (MAW) largest local fundraising event, was held on Saturday, January 28th at The Painted Table in Fresno. The Fresno State Bulldog Marching band kicked off the lively evening, where more than $350,000 was raised. Several inspiring stories were shared, showcasing the Central Valley community coming together to support wish kids. The room, filled with more than 400 guests, donned sea-creature masks in a live wish reveal for wish kid Lucas, whose wish to go to Hawaii was granted. While shiny statues can be a pleasure to polish, the real satisfaction we get at Janzen Brands is helping our clients leave their competition in the dust.
Unlike traditional agencies, the Janzen Brands business model isn’t driven by how many media dollars we spend, or how many people we employ. Instead, our cost-effective coalition of major market creative talent, strategists, and planners work within a streamlined, à la carte process with minimal layers between client and collaborators.
This distinctly different approach has been honored with two Emmys in just the last few years, awarded for telling our clients’ stories uniquely and memorably.
With our decades of success stories with some of the Central Valley’s best brands as well as some recognizable national brands, now might be the perfect time to discuss how making us your marketing partner could be a winning move.
Amongst Fresno’s many examples of Mid-Century Modern architecture, The Micka Residence stands out as one of the most exceptionally preserved private homes. The house, located in the Fig Garden Estates neighborhood off Fruit and Shaw Avenues, was designed in 1962 by Robin Gay McCline of Oakes and McCline for William “Bill” and Margaret “Peggy” Micka, who commissioned the architectural firm to design a modern home for them. The resulting structure is contained within a symmetrical footprint that creates a mirrored façade.
“The couple raised three children in the home and lived there until Bill’s passing in 2016,” recalls the current homeowner Mike Counts. “After the passing of Mr. Micka, the home was purchased by Eldon Daetweiler of Fresno Modern Real Estate. Eldon made many period-correct repairs and lived in the home until 2019, when he moved to Los Angeles,” which is when the Counts family bought the house, Mike and his wife Jess moving in with their son Lucas and Boston terrier Lucy.
To fully appreciate the context of The Micka Residence, one must know a bit about Mr. Micka. Mike explains, “Bill spent his career in Fresno City Schools as an art teacher at Roosevelt High School, where he was the sponsor of the class of 1954. He was also a principal at Irwin and Wawona Junior High Schools and a president of the Association of California School Administrators. Bill’s passion
was art. He was an accomplished abstract oil painter, sculptor, and poet.” The home is still has some the original works by Micka, including a pair of Tiki-style hand-carved wood panels on the front doors.
Much remains of the original design despite the house having provided shelter to three families. “My family and I moved into the home in mid-2019 and we are proud to say that not much has changed since it was built in 1962! We feel this home is one of, if not the finest example of true unaltered Mid-Century Modern architecture in Fresno,” professes Mike with justifiable pride. The courtyard entry, expansive glass walls, numerous skylights, 9’ beamed ceilings, terrazzo floors, and original showers and countertops are just a few of the quintessential Mid-Century Modern features still standing.
The Mickas’ original taupe, white, and orange paint color scheme is still seen throughout the house. The carrot hue within was carried over to the double front doors by the Counts. Navy and teal blues indoors and out complement the vibrant shade splendidly. Whitewashed timber beams are just as timeless in the home now as they were when installed during construction. White walls and French grey paint around the home allow the family’s incredible collection of retro-inspired artwork, decorative objects, books, and vintage Mid-Century Modern furniture and fixtures to shine.
“Essential to the genre’s indoor/outdoor design, the home provides spectacular views of the courtyard, decks, pool, and landscapes,” says Mike. In the backyard, the slotted roof overhang was designed in a particular area to frame an olive tree that once stood from the Mickas’ landscape plan. Though the tree had to be removed due to rot and termites, its absence now lets tremendous natural light into the living room area. In its place stand two spotlighted geometric aluminum screens custom-made by Mike—the screens are also replicated out front. Raised wood decking flanks the southern side of the home at opposite ends, creating a natural border around the screens in the center.
Backyard renovations took approximately eight months. After stripping back the greenery, the pool was refinished first, followed by a new, smooth concrete decking, and, finally, a redesigned garden that includes a small lawn. The paisley-shaped pool was entirely redone while retaining its unique shape, and now dons a cantilever edge and aquamarine waterline tile. PebbleTec gives the surface an earthy, subtly textured, natural finish.
The original backyard garden, which featured numerous shrubberies and trees, was replaced by minimal yet sensible plants that now adorn the landscape design from front to back. Conscious use of ornamental rocks of varying sizes, shapes, and colors highlights a garden of drought-resistant palms, privet hedges, succulents, and cacti. A 60-year-old palm towers majestically at the western end of the backyard, visible even from the street front.
“Besides the excellent architecture, the home boasts several original works of art from the era by locally renowned ceramic artist Stan Bitters,” which Mike avidly collects and displays both in and outside the residence. The piece mounted in the entry courtyard was made in 1964 and shares space with a standing sculpture from the same year. Birdhouses and planters
hang about the spaces, each unique in itself. Mike has even arranged and assembled a collection of tiles by the artist into a custom frame that now hangs just outside the kitchen door to the backyard.
Another major, yet thoughtful modernization at The Micka Residence is the addition of solar panels on the original roof. Since the home required a flat-roof installation and the family didn’t want the panels to be seen on the property or for the roof to be penetrated due to the installation, a ballast system was implemented. Racks for the solar panels are held in place under their own weight and with the help of ballast blocks. This system also minimizes the chance of roof leakage.
For a home of this architectural caliber to still be in such pristine condition after over six decades and three homeowners is amazing. “This piece of architectural art is truly a treasure and should be celebrated as the first contemporary Mid-Century Modern residential example on the Local Register of Historic Places!” argues Mike. His fervent wish came true when in January 2022, the “William Micka Residence” was named a Fresno County Historical Landmark.
The Micka Residence is indeed a magnificent illustration of period-correct Mid-Century Modern architecture and design. Yet what’s truly incredible about the abode is how it is maintaining its authenticity while simultaneously being genuinely “Mike and Jess.” The home feels like the couple. The home functions for their family. The Counts’ aesthetic within and around the existing structure beautifully embodies the harmonious marriage of old and new world styles and living. “He brings in the authentic elements, I bring the color and Boho vibe,” Jess confides. While Mike has been a Mid-Century enthusiast even before the couple met and married, Jess’s eye for design gives new life to her husband’s ever-evolving collection of vintage furniture—she loves styling the interior with the new (old) pieces he acquires. And in this way, the space is constantly developing. But one thing remains constant: family is at the heart of the Counts’ home—it remains a functional, pulsating home, and not just a lifeless museum piece.
Features Contributor Danielle Fischer, Owner & CEO of Magnolia’s Yarden and Owner of Flower Market Photographers DC Photography Studios, Magnolia’s Yarden and Outsiders StudioThe garden-to-kitchen botanical lifestyle is about bringing all the benefits and joy of botanicals, especially flowers, from the garden to all areas of our lives. Through years of pursuing my passion by serving the community and contributing to building relationship with plants, I believe I’ve settled in right where I am supposed to be—among the flowers, and connecting people with the botanicals that meet their needs. I’m lucky to be a part of sparking joy and building excitement over people’s relationships with plants and flowers.
That relationship can be completely different for each person. For some, it may be enjoying a fresh bouquet every week or treating themselves to lavender ice cream. For others, planting flowers in the garden or starting a compost in their backyard is preferred. I have found there are stages people go through as they explore the world of botanicals, and each stage gets a bit more complex as they challenge themselves to dig deeper and learn more.
It typically begins with something that sparks joy, and, in turn, it becomes therapeutic. At that point, they’re developing their own botanical lifestyle by integrating, for example, flowers into other areas in their lives. This could be cooking, painting, crafting, or self-care. Sometimes, it even leads to a new career path. I myself have experienced this journey of turning my passion for botanicals and working with the community into my profession.
Our community is very interested in all types of botanicals. I often guide people who are starting to cultivate their botanical lifestyle to first learn about the botanicals that inspire them the most. How do they hope botanicals will influence their life? If it’s cooking, we share the best edible flowers and recipes as well as knowledge on designing an edible home garden. For those who wish to transform their backyard into a garden sanctuary or a usable space, our landscape designs are influenced by the homeowners’ desired experience. Whatever it is you’re seeking, remember that this is an important extension of your life and home.
One of the most sought-after botanical products at Magnolia’s Yarden is edible flowers. They are used in professional and home kitchens alike for both their flavor and beauty, and introduce a seasonal component to your creations. It’s always important to source high-quality, food-grade edible flowers that are safe for consumption. Unfortunately, not everyone is aware of this, and, as a result, some resort to using grocery store arrangements. Floristry flowers are not grown in accordance with food safety standards and typically are sprayed with chemicals that are not meant to be, and should never be, in contact with food. Plus, some flowers are just naturally toxic. Culinary creators love to collaborate with Magnolia’s Yarden because we take the guesswork out of what can be consumed.
A unique edible flower product for the hostess, baker, and bride are pressed edible flowers and arrangements. They are often used for birthday and wedding cakes. Because they are preserved, they are incredibly easy to arrange like a pro. In fact, that is why bakers love to decorate with them, too! Pressed edible flowers and arrangements highlight one’s love and relationship with flowers, while complementing the carefully thought-out details of any event. Moreover, brides and planners relish the opportunity to select months in advance an arrangement that dried selections provide.
With slow food and flower movements gaining traction and becoming more familiar, we share in this common mission and follow through by organizing our own local flower market that provides all types of locally grown botanicals. This is a valuable resource for those that don’t wish to or are not able to grow their own flowers and botanicals. Sourcing locally grown cut, edible, and potted is the next best option. This is significant because the convenience for flower lovers provides an efficient sales avenue for local growers, large or small, who get to sell directly to consumers.
In the spring of 2022, the Flower Market launched first as a pop-up flower market event—think farmers’ market with only flower growers—in Clovis, with Fresno debuting shortly after. It was so well received that not only is it returning this year, it’s also expanding to provide even more access to local botanicals and products. More local growers will be attending, such as Belmont Nursery, Sweet Acres Flower Farm, Blooms on Lincoln Ave, Sweet Thistle Farms, Fleurie Flower Studio, Solace Lavender Farm, Silver Frog Flowers, Magnolia’s Yarden, and more.
This season’s first in-person market opens in March, welcoming a mix of flower lovers, garden enthusiasts, and culinary creators who will soon again source their botanicals from these local flower farms. With overflowing buckets of gorgeous flowers, this is a unique botanical destination in the Central Valley. Building a flower bouquet, by selecting favorite stems from a few different growers, is a crowd-favorite experience. The flowers change seasonally, so each week’s offerings include a little something different. In addition to cut flowers, there are also potted flowers for your home and garden.
We are often asked questions that begin with “how.” How do I plant this? How do I cook this? How do I make that myself? To share our knowledge, we host special events—some are even taught by local growers. Attending hands-on botanical workshops and occasions is a fun way for new and seasoned flower lovers to learn a new skill or expand on an existing one. The workshops tap into areas like growing, gardening, composting, sustainable practices from the garden to the kitchen, and specialty projects like succulent pumpkins or flower crowns. In this way, everyone has the opportunity to learn the full circle of growing, designing, and eating botanicals. Get on the invite list to receive these special event invitations and local bloom news when you subscribe at www.flowermarketca.com.
Flowers partake in our most joyous and painful experiences and occasions throughout life, yet I would love to see them intertwined with our everyday. Growing, serving, and working with local growers to make them even more accessible increases the likelihood that more people will incorporate blooms into their everyday to cultivate their own botanical lifestyle. The public is invited to shop at the in-person Flower Markets, where you can meet growers while you sip coffee and shop farm-fresh blooms. Let this be the year your botanical lifestyle blooms in a brand-new way.

umans are affected by so many external factors. Yet, while it’s easy to identify when it’s too hot or too cold, few are conscious of how light impacts their comfort, mood, and outlook. Although we can’t control the weather outside, we do hold the power when it comes to interior and exterior lighting. Not all lights are created equal; nevertheless, at James Ashjian Lighting & Home, you’ll find nothing but bright ideas. Owner & President Jamee Ashjian Moltini is here to explain how “lighting will make or break your space.”
LB Why is lighting such an important component of home design?
JM Lighting is an essential design element that can completely transform your space, and it is truly one of the most important aspects when designing any project. Whether you’re lighting a home, restaurant, or office, your lighting choices will set the tone and desired mood. Expertly placed lighting adds another dimension, creating an inviting and comfortable setting. Lighting truly brings any project to life, and we always say, “Lighting will make or break your space.” A quote we live by!
LB How does one achieve and adjust ambiance using light?
JM I love ambiance and truly believe it’s the most important element when it comes to lighting. Functional light, dimmed light, and ambient light—the perfect trifecta. I think recessed cans are the absolute key in one’s space with decorative fixtures to accent. They are your go-to problem solver for lighting a room. Overhead lighting or chandelier can add the perfect touch if done right. A well-chosen fixture can double as a beautiful piece of art to make a statement in the room. Adding dimmers can control and change the ambiance and mood. Dimmers are your best friend!
LB What does it mean to layer lighting?
JM To me, layered lighting would mean you have different light sources throughout your room. You could have task, accent, and decorative lights. When planning out your room, consider what you’ll be doing in that space and design your lighting needs around it. Also, take advantage of natural light. Again, dimmers can add another layer and set the mood.
HLB How do you recommend going about mixing different light fixtures?
JM In my opinion, I like the “eclectic” look, otherwise known as “transitional” these days. I love mixing old with new, whether it be pieces of furniture, artwork, or lighting. My rule of thumb is to stick with a few finishes, have things flow, try not to have too many things going on in one room, and don’t be afraid to try something new. While nice fixtures are a bit of an investment, they make all the difference. Honestly, it’s all about what you like and what makes you happy when you walk through your door. Your home is your sanctuary. Mine is!
LB Share how you evaluate fixture proportions.
JM It’s pretty basic when it comes to figuring out the right size. You need to take into consideration the scale of the room, the placement of furniture, as well as the ceiling height. For example, with hanging pendants over an island, decide whether you’d like two or three. If you use two, then go a little larger, and if using three you’d go smaller. Spacing the pendants would all depend on the size of the island. For a dining room, look for a fixture that’s about two-thirds the size of your table and hang it anywhere from 28” to 36” from the top of the table to the bottom of the fixture. Anywhere between that is a personal preference.
LB For overhead lighting, what elements should be considered before making a final decision?
JM I would take into consideration the size of the room, ceiling, etc. How much light is needed and the look you’re going for. As I’ve said before, lighting is a personal preference. As long as you have good functional lighting and you can see what you’re doing, pick a fixture that makes you happy.
LB Tell us about different lightbulb “temperatures” and the best applications for each.
JM Where do I begin… When we were told the incandescent bulb was becoming obsolete, it was rough. We used to only have to worry about wattage and the type of bulb needed. Now, there’s Kelvins, Lumens, Watts, etc. The first round of LED bulbs was awful! The temperature color was that sterile bluish white and the bulb itself was hideous-looking. That softness of the warm ambient light was gone, although they have pretty much perfected it now. There’s an array of color options and styles, and they’re looking more and more like a regular light bulb. If you’re wanting that warmer look, stay within the 2700–3000k range. If your desire is to have that cooler look, 3500–4000k would be the choice for you. Anything over 4000k, you’re going to be in the more commercial range. Come in, and we can show you the different colors and styles of bulbs. There’s so much to learn.
LB How do you go about extending interior lighting styles to the exterior of a home to maintain consistency?
JM Outdoor lighting is just as important as indoor lighting—same rules apply. You can extend your living space outside and your backyard becomes the perfect place to entertain and enjoy your yard at night. Landscape lighting is a must have, also. It not only offers a sense of security but also, a well-lit yard adds value and increases your curb appeal, and it is an inviting place for friends and family. It shows that your home is well taken care of. Again, “Lighting will make or break your space.”
I love all the seasons for all the reasons, but there’s something special about spring. With the fog lifting, the grass greening, and the buds blooming, the world around us comes back to life. March, the official start of spring, ushers in the season for al fresco entertaining and gives me renewed energy to socialize. At home, we spring into party prep mode: we power-wash, we paint, we polish. We prune and we plant. I love any excuse to spruce up my space, doing what we all know as “spring cleaning.”
It is during this glorious window between March and May—before the sweltering summer heat hits—that you’ll find me in our garden nightly. Whether we are gathering casually with family or celebrating with a soirée, I love hosting at home. It feels special, almost luxurious. There is something about inviting people into your intimate space that brings you closer to them—as the host, you shine in your element, and as the guest, you experience someone in a very personal way.
The roles of host and guest are so innately intertwined that we hardly ponder them, but each plays an essential part in the success of an event. A preeminent host plans and prepares. They attend to every detail, from the food to the flowers to the favors. They curate an interesting guest list and assign seating to cultivate connection. A savvy guest brings energy and charm. They meet and mingle with old and new friends. They elevate interactions with confidence, style, and grace. A hospitable host cherishes a gracious guest (and vice versa!) as they excel symbiotically.
Whether in a formal or informal setting, the roles of host and guest are on intricate display at the dining table. For example, with firsts and lasts. The host sits first. The host is served last. The host eats first. The host finishes last. To a novice, dining etiquette can feel overwhelming, if not intimidating. But remember, etiquette is more than its definition, which is a customary code of polite behavior. At its essence, etiquette exists to promote respect, courtesy, and thoughtfulness amongst society’s members.
It might seem odd to refer to the art of setting a table as thoughtful, but through that lens its purpose becomes clear. Traditionally, an informal table is set for a one-course meal, and a formal table is set for a multicourse meal. In this regard, “informal” and “formal” don’t refer to the table aesthetic, but to the number of pieces of tableware. Multiple cutlery pieces might appear pretentious until one learns that each fork has been placed for a purpose—to be used to enjoy a delicious dining experience. The goal is not necessarily to set a table formally, but to set it properly. With this insight and the following pro tips, dining etiquette becomes more approachable and appreciated.

Don white cotton gloves to keep fingerprints off fine china, sterling silver, and crystal. Use a butler stick to achieve even spacing between chargers and place setting elements.
Wash, press, and fold napkins with the fold on the right. Place napkins on the chargers or to the left of the forks. Avoid putting napkins in glassware, as that is customarily done in hotels or for banquets.
Place cutlery according to the menu with the first course on the outside, farthest from the charger. Note that dessert cutlery is set above the charger, with the tines of the fork to the right and the bowl of the spoon facing left.
Select appropriate glassware to accompany the beverages that will be served during the meal. The water glass is placed directly above the dinner fork, with the following glasses to the right: red wine, white wine, and champagne.
Use place cards for larger gatherings when you aren’t able to personally show guests to their seats. Traditionally, women are interspersed between men, and couples, relatives, and colleagues are separated. Remember, the host and hostess do not require a place card when entertaining at home.

It’s garden season, but most people don’t have the luxury of being able to pick fresh fruits and flowers from their backyard. So, reap spring’s bounty while looking like the polished posterchild of the farmers’ market. A canvas carry-all is essential, as are sunnies and a head-turning hat. Don chambray for Scarborough Fair vibes, but wear it under a thin down vest for practicality.
