These aren’t your average ladies who lunch at the latest installment of Shake+Stir. Hosted by Sabor Cocina Latina & Bar, the establishment recently relocated to the Park Place shopping center from the Fig Garden Loop area. Katie Zenovich, Karen McCaffrey, Victoria Sherlock, Tracy Kashian, Amanda Jones, and Sontaya Rose joined Editorial Director Lauren Barisic for a tasting of three house-favorite cocktails, four top menu picks, and a decadent dessert hand-selected by the restaurant owners, Alberto Torres and Santos Arevalo.
The entire menu pays homage to the rich and prolific Latin culture. “When we opened our restaurant, we wanted to create something different,” Alberto explained. “With our dish selections, we want people to explore the different flavors from Central and South American countries, in addition to our modern take on Mexican dishes. We want our guests to have an adventurous culinary experience without leaving the Central Valley.” That’s precisely what was delivered.
For those who prefer a wine-based concoction, their Sangria is available in either a Guava or Classic Red option. When the guava cocktail was presented, the entire table marvelled at its beauty and shared in the excitement of trying something familiar yet new. The
pink juice is mixed with white zinfandel wine and a bit of brandy, and garnished with skewered fruits, such as orange, strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, and a mint sprig. “I would like to return to introduce my girlfriends to the Guava Sangria,” said Sontaya. “It’s a unique take on sangria that’s delicious and perfect to enjoy on a warm Fresno afternoon!”
Sabor’s Guacamole is next level. The traditional avocado, onion, tomato, cilantro, lime juice, and jalapeño dip is presented with tortilla chips arranged around the perimeter. Colorful garnishes add to the visual experience. “It tastes homemade,” Victoria professed. It’s excellent on its own, but also makes a wonderful accompaniment.
Margarita enthusiasts will be delighted by the creatively diverse selection of drinks featuring the libation’s signature tequila and lime juice baseline. The Flor de Jamaica combines Patrón Silver, hibiscus syrup, lime juice, and agave nectar. “The margarita really stole the show for me,” Amanda admitted. “Not only could you taste the fresh ingredients that complimented the tequila choice, the drink was light, refreshing, and way too easy to have another. I liked that it was paired with the guacamole appetizer because it brought out dynamic flavors and made a classic more complex.”
When opting for the Mango Ceviche, there’s a choice between shrimp or fish proteins. This refreshing chopped dish is composed with lime juice, mango, tomato, onion, cilantro, cucumber, and jalapeño, served with oversized tortilla chips. It can be shared just as easily as it can be made a meal in and of itself. “It’s full of freshness, flavor, and the perfect amount of shrimp and jalapeño! The light app is a perfect way to usher in summer and even better—it’s guilt-free!” Sontaya raved. “Excellent,” Tracy concurred. “It’s flavorful, has a jalapeño to add some heat, and is great with chips.”
Sabor’s signature cocktails each references a different Latin American country. “The captivatingly beautiful and refreshing signature cocktails are a reason for me to go back to Sabor for more,” Katie applauded. La Havana Mojito features a muddling of Bacardi Rum, fresh mint leaves, lime wedges, and sugar, and will transport you to Cuba while in Fresno. “I never drink these, but this is so refreshing and good! I can picture myself drinking this poolside,” proclaimed Victoria.
Choose between chicken and shrimp when ordering the Chile Relleno. The roasted poblano is presented open-face and stuffed with cheese, bell peppers, and onion, served in a shallow bowl of roasted roma tomato sauce. A drizzling of crema over the plate’s entire contents counters the subtle heat. “The chili relleno is special and surprising with unexpected flavors,” Karen praised, noting that Sabor’s relocation is “A fabulous reopening to the local restaurant scene.”
The Salmon a la Parrilla is, in a word, divine. Picture-perfect lattice grill marks adorn the filet, which is atop a verde salsa. It is served alongside roasted baby potatoes. So simple yet so satisfying, it’s the kind of dish that you could eat daily. “First of all, it is beautifully plated,” Katie remarked of the perfectly cooked fish. “It is unique, fresh, and delicious. I love salmon and order it often. So, I’m particular! I don’t like it dry and over cooked. Nor do I like it too rare. Sabor’s chef knows how to do it! It’s grilled and tender, with just enough char.”
The Bread Pudding at Sabor puts a Latin spin on this English dessert staple. In accordance with the traditional recipe, an eggy bread is soaked in custard, features cinnamon, and is baked until golden. “Loved the bread pudding with a drizzle of syrup, and the scoop of ice cream was refreshing,” applauded Karen. Prepared as an individual serving, it’s topped with vanilla ice cream and horchata syrup. Mixed berries lighten the palate.
Glancing at the group photo, you’d think the ladies had coordinated their outfits ahead of time, but no! To the delight of everyone in attendance, hot pink and florals were obviously trending subconsciously, and the vibrancy of the general wardrobe styling mirrored the evening’s energy—no one wanted to leave when the time came! Sabor’s beautiful atmosphere is warm and inviting, asking its patrons to sit and stay, savor every sip, and celebrate. No matter the occasion, big or small, dining at Sabor Cocina Latina & Bar will leave you relishing the moment and eager to return again.

hen I opened my practice in Fresno in 2002, I wanted to establish an environment where women can feel comfortable when exploring their options. My approach is focused on using the best of contemporary technology and techniques while applying my unique artistic sensibility, yielding results that exceed my patients’ expectations. Let’s embark on a journey toward something great!
Neurotoxins and dermal fillers are the most popular non-invasive procedures requested in my practice. We offer an array of neuromodulators and fillers and I have two master level aesthetic nurse injectors, who together have over 20 years of experience in the aesthetic world. They also specialize in PDO thread lift, microneedling, and more.
I approach my patients with kind honesty. Most patients will be improved with surgery like a tummy tuck. I spend a lot of time during the initial consultation showing my patient what I hope and expect her to look like after surgery. This way my patients are happy and not disappointed.
As women, we are fortunate to have many roles. We are wives, mothers, sisters, and daughters, often all at the same time. As dizzying as that can be sometimes, it is a blessing. I personally try to be present in all the different chapters and phases of my life.
Helping women be the best they can be is what drives me.
My son. Our world instantly changed when we lost his father in a tragic plane crash in 2019. Overnight, I became a single mom working full-time. In spite of the pain and struggles, I pushed through to make something of myself. I want my son and his father to be proud.
THE SECRET TO MY SUCCESS
Dedication and determination. In the wake of so much change, I stayed consistent, even when I wanted to stay in bed and cry. I got up early while my son was still asleep and stayed up after he went to bed to work on my business plans and goals, figuring out how to achieve them.
MY BIGGEST
AOpening SC Beauty Room. Having only been in the industry for two years, I never thought I’d be where I am today. I started out renting booths, then rooms. I overcame being scammed and burned by other business owners. Now I’m a salon owner, motivating and inspiring others that they can achieve their dreams, too.
There are two things. One is meeting all the wonderful clients. Over the years, I’ve met many people-turned-friends. Second, it gives me the freedom to be a present mother. My children are my priority, and this industry allows me the flexibility to be there for all of their small and big milestones.
ll your beauty needs will be met at SC Beauty Room. We are an all-female-owned business that is more than a full-service salon; we also focus on women empowerment. We host classes and certify women to start businesses in the beauty industry and mentor them. We also host all-female-owned business pop-ups every few months. We absolutely love making women feel beautiful on the inside and out, and love helping them reach their full potential. Our business name represents us as well as our kids, Saverio and Camila, who are our daily motivation and the reason we work so hard.
SC Beauty Room is filled with beautiful, talented, loving, humble women. It’s a safe space and a one-stop-shop where all your beauty needs can be met. Our team goes above and beyond to accommodate clients. We made sure to choose women with the same goals, ambition, and work ethic as us.
Happiness, fulfillment, and comfort. I’m blessed to provide for my children and help my family and friends. I wake up every day happy to go to work. It brings me joy to help my clients find confidence within themselves or to be someone they can vent to. Being all these things behind the chair is success to me.
Other women are not our competition. We stand with them, not against them.
have provided premiere concierge real estate experiences in and outside of the San Joaquin Valley for over 13 years. Client success is everything to me. I am the creator and founder of Staging Simplified, which provides complimentary staging and design services to my sellers. I offer market analysis and pre-qualification coaching and assistance to buyers. Going beyond and thinking outside of the box is my forte. Providing real estate excellence at its best!
Experienced. Ambitious. Strategic.
Price and presentation is everything. First and foremost, setting the right price is crucial when listing your home for sale. When choosing a listing agent, make sure that your listing agent uses vacant or occupied staging tools to ensure a pleasant, welcoming environment for potential buyers.
Experience matters… When choosing a realtor partner to make your real estate goals a reality, ensure they are an experienced local realtor with lots of good reviews. Quality service, integrity, and professionalism is everything in making your experience pleasant and successful.
Recently, I was chosen to represent the San Joaquin Valley as a host of The American Dream. AD is a national TV show that features nearly every US city, showcasing the culture, lifestyle, and real estate. I am so excited and honored to be the first host to showcase our area, highlighting the beautiful features and lifestyle of our community. My first segment will air in June, featuring the Clovis Rodeo and the Crow & Wolf Brewery. Contact me if you would like to showcase your business nationally.

Though known world-wide, Fresno can claim bragging rights as the singer and actor’s childhood home. Despite her God-given ability and remarkable success, Audra credits her strong foundation in theater to the time she spent with Fresno’s Good Company Players (GCP), where she began her career in show business. Now, this extraordinary performer, not to mention the group’s most notorious alumna, is returning to the Central Valley to present a homecoming concert in celebration of the Good Company Players’50th Anniversary Season.
Although she was born in West Berlin, Germany, Audra’s family relocated to her father’s hometown of Fresno when she was young. From an early age, it was evident that performing was an innate part of Audra’s nature. “The acting/singing bug probably bit earlier than I have memory of being alive, if you were to ask my parents about how I grew up,” admits Audra. “I was constantly singing and dancing around the house. I was a very theatrical toddler and little girl. Sang in my church choir, sang in my school choir, and also did a lot of dancing lessons to channel my energy. I always felt most normal, most me, when I was performing,” she says.
Her parents were searching for an outlet to channel their daughter’s hyperactive, expressive, and emotional energy. “At the same time, I wanted to win a trophy for doing something because my sister had gotten a trophy for learning how to dive off of the diving board in our swimming pool,” Audra reminisces. “So my parents said, ‘Well, why don’t you audition for this little dinner theater? They’ve got this junior troupe called the Junior Company.’ They had seen a couple of shows at the theater and said, ‘Why don’t you go and audition and see how you do?’ I was nine and auditioned, and they accepted me as an alternate and understudy.”
She joined the company at that time. By autumn of that same year, the little girl had become a regular member of the troupe. Audra remained with Good Company Players until her graduation from Theodore Roosevelt High School in 1988. During her four years at the school, she also participated in the Roosevelt School of the Arts program. Being a member of GCP was immensely formative in helping to shape Audra’s career. “Really, all the basics of everything that I know about theater, I learned from Good Company Players. That goes for what you learned from being both on stage and off,” she elaborates.
Discipline is crucial in achieving success. “Disciplined in terms of rehearsing and being willing to give up other extracurricular activities that perhaps especially a teenager or a 12-year-old would want to do. For us in the Junior Company, we had to give up our Saturdays. We were rehearsing every single Saturday. We had to make sure that all our homework was done because every night, we were going to the dinner theater and we were performing in a show. You’d run home from school, get your homework done, and then run over to the theater to do the pre-show. If you were rehearsing in one of the big musicals, you were rehearsing as well for not just a few hours before you did the show, but you were rehearsing long hours after school as well. That meant your grades had to stay up. You had to be really smart about when you did your homework,” Audra explains.
She also gained knowledge of theater etiquette through her involvement with the Good Company Players. “I learned how to behave backstage. I learned you’re not supposed to talk backstage. I learned that you have to give your fellow artists the respect that they deserve when they’re on
stage and not mess around backstage just because the energy’s not on you. That it’s a group effort. And then everything I learned about being on stage, everything about performing, how to speak on stage, how to project, how to focus, how to learn about the characters, everything. It was everything. It literally gave me my entire foundation for being a theater performer,” she said.
Audra continued to be a member of the Good Company Players until she left for New York shortly after graduating in August 1988, having been accepted into the prestigious Juilliard School. “I did do a show a month or two after I got accepted,” Audra recollects. “I’m fairly certain that Dan Pessano, who still is the managing director of Good Company Players, I think he might have come out and announced it to the audience that night, whatever show was happening at the theater. I remember a whole audience of people screaming when it happened, there was huge support and congratulations.”
The connections that Audra made at GCP in Fresno helped her establish herself in the Big Apple. “A man named Keith Stoner, who had done lots of shows at Good Company Players, had moved to New York a couple years before. He was the one who met me at the airport when I flew into New York. I stayed with him for a few days and he taught me how to use the subway. He took me to a McDonald’s for the first time. He was like, ‘All right. Now, you got to learn how New York people will act, so go in and order.’ And I was like, ‘They’re so mean.’ He’s like, ‘Yeah. That’s just New York. Get used to it,’” Audra recalls.
Keith taught Audra how to get to Juilliard and helped her move into her dorm. “It wasn’t even a dorm; it was a residential hotel. He taught me how to take the subway from where the residential hotel was down to Juilliard. He taught me everything I needed to know as a baby living on her own in New York City for the first time. That’s because of the relationship I developed with him at Good Company Players. He was such a friend and a mentor to me while I was at Good Company Players, and he is still a friend of mine to this day. In fact, my nickname for him is Ma. I call him Ma because of what a mom he was to me when I first got here,” she explains.
The young performing artist thrived in New York. Only one year after graduating from Juilliard, Audra McDonald won her first Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical for her role in Carousel (1994). Over the next four years, she was awarded two more Tony Awards in the same category for her performances in the Broadway premieres of Master Class (1996) and Ragtime (1998). This achievement left her with an unprecedented three Tony Awards before the age of 30. Her fourth Tony came for her performance in A Raisin in the Sun (2004). Her fifth award, and her first in the leading actress category, was given for her portrayal of the title role in The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess (2012). In 2012, Audra made Broadway history by winning a record-breaking sixth award for her outstanding performance as Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill. This role also earned her an Olivier Award nomination and led to her debut at London’s West End in 2017. As a result, she became the most decorated performer in the history of the Tony Awards—a title she still holds. In addition to setting the record for the most competitive wins by an actor, she is also the first person to receive awards in all four acting categories.
Her résumé and accomplishments in theater, television, and opera are both impressive and extensive. Audra has won two Grammy Awards and an Emmy Award. She made her opera debut at the Houston Grand Opera in 2006, where she starred in a double bill featuring the monodrama La voix humaine and the world premiere of Send. The following year, the recording of her Los Angeles Opera debut in Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny earned her two Grammy Awards for Best Opera Recording and Best Classical Album. Audra won a Primetime Emmy Award in 2015 for her hosting role in the Creative Arts Special Program on PBS’s Live From Lincoln Center. She has also received nominations for her performances in Wit, A Raisin in the Sun, and Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill
Furthermore, Audra maintains a successful career as a concert and recording artist, regularly performing at some of the world’s most prestigious venues. She has graced the stages of the Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, National Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, and San Francisco Symphony. She made her debut at Carnegie Hall in 1998. Internationally, Audra has performed with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. She has also appeared at London’s Palladium and the BBC Proms. Vogue praised her performance at the 2021 Met Gala as “heart-stopping.” Her best known television and film roles include The Good Fight, Private Practice, The Gilded Age (TV), and Respect (film). In 2015, she was recognized as one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people and was awarded the National Medal of Arts, America’s highest honor for achievement in the field, by President Barack Obama.
Audra is known for her versatility; however, she believes that her approach does not stand out from the norm. “I work hard. I am very interested in many different parts of performing arts. Not just theater, but concertizing. Not just concertizing, but television. Not just television, but film. All of it feeds and informs every other bit of it. So I guess my approach isn’t myopic. Not in my view of who I am as an artist. I allow myself to venture and try different aspects of it, knowing full well that I may fail, but that it’s going to help me to evolve as an artist. I’m open to doing all of it, not just focusing on just concertizing or just theater or just classical music or just Broadway or just theater or just television,” says Audra.
Fear is the common factor that draws her into new projects amidst her vast breadth of work. “Any role that makes me nervous, that scares me, that I think that I might not be able to do. I’ve learned from all these years of doing it that that’s a sign in my body saying, ‘Lean in. You’re going to learn from that. That’s going to teach you something. That’s going to be difficult. Go to it.’” Audra listens to her inner voice and has mastered the process of following it. With that reasoning and approach, she is constantly improving her craft.
“Maybe this is just a natural evolution that happens as one ages and lives more life and spends more time on this planet, in this world, I’m more comfortable in my own skin in life. I think that reflects in my work,” she acknowledges. “I am, I think, more curious, and perhaps I’m learning to be less judgmental of myself and to give myself more grace, which then allows me to put myself out there a little more and make more mistakes and not be punished by myself for those mistakes. When you do that, there’s more learning that occurs, there’s more evolution that occurs. I find myself embracing letting go of perfection or the pursuit of
perfection. There is no such thing. I believe that more now than I ever have before,” she says.
However, this doesn’t deter her from continuously striving towards new goals, both in her professional and personal life. “There’s a few roles that I still would like to pursue; there’s types of roles that I want to pursue,” Audra imparts. Although she can’t reveal them at the moment, she does admit, “There’s a part of me that would like to look into doing a little more Shakespeare. That’s something that intrigues me as well. Just things that continue to push the envelope and to push me as an artist.” And push her as a farmer—a goat farmer, to be specific.
“That’s my future. Learning more about being an adjacent goat farmer, meaning the farm next door to the goat farm. Literally a farm hand, learning to be a farm hand to help run my own farm.” Audra’s property in Portugal has become an oasis where she and her husband, Will Swenson, seek refuge. “And then our neighbors who live next door to us in Portugal, help them with their farm and their goats and sheep.” Although Audra did not grow up on a farm, it is evident that she has maintained a connection to the agricultural heritage of her childhood stomping grounds.
Audra McDonald in Concert will headline the 50th Anniversary Season of the Good Company Players. This once-in-a-lifetime concert, held for a unique event, will take place on the afternoon of Sunday, June 25th, at Warnors Theatre in Fresno. “It’s a chance to come home. It’s a chance to say thank you to the theater that literally, I don’t want to say altered, but put me on my path. I would not be who I am today as an artist, as a person, anything, without my years in Fresno, my years growing up at Good Company Players and growing up going to Roosevelt School of the Arts, and the people that I met who helped to shape me and guide me. I would not be where I am without that, and so this is a way for me to say thank you,” she states.
Those fortunate enough to obtain tickets for the Good Company Players’ highly anticipated homecoming concert featuring their most renowned former member can expect an exceptional performance. “Just think of it as being in the living room with me, singing songs they’ve heard me sing before, maybe songs that they’ve always wanted me to sing that I’ve never sung, going down memory lane. It’s a chance for me to come home and say thank you, and so that’s what I’m going to be doing from the stage through song and through stories,” Audra divulges. Watching Audra McDonald perform on the same stage where her remarkable career started is bound to be an unforgettable experience.
When I first moved to New York to attend New York University, I was a Central Valley girl living in the big city. Sure, I had spent years living in the bustling towns of Westwood and Santa Monica in Los Angeles during my time at the University of California, Los Angeles, but it was nothing compared to the big city. I was new, I was nervous, but I had to keep going.
How did I do it? Confidence and self-esteem. This comes easy to some, but it is more challenging to others, which I have seen firsthand in my two decades of experience in human resources and leadership development. However, with a little practice every day, you can grow to respond to challenges and opportunities more resourcefully, which will help you advance personally and professionally.
Features Contributor Gia Kazarian, Founder of Gia Kazarian Consulting Photos provided by Gia Kazarian Consulting, taken by RPM PR @giakazarianconsultingIn my executive consulting work, I offer these 10 tips to build healthy self-esteem and confidence that will guide you toward becoming your best self:
“Every one of us needs to show how much we care for each other and, in the process, care for ourselves.” – Princess
DianaAs the flight attendant reminds us just before the airplane takes off, “Put your oxygen mask on first before helping others.” The same goes for all aspects of life. In order for you to be the best employee, leader, parent, friend, spouse, etcetera, you must be the best version of yourself.
I ask clients, “How do you take care of yourself? Or how do you want to take care of yourself?” We then identify small steps to reach attainable goals. Self-care can take many forms, including emotional, physical, social, spiritual, and mental care.
“A first impression is the most important impression you’ll ever make—and you get only one chance to make it.” – Ann Demarais, author of First Impressions: What You Don’t Know About How Others See You
First impressions are made within seconds, and it is very difficult to reverse a negative first impression. So it is imperative you make a positive and lasting first impression.
I will ask my clients, “Do you always succeed in making the first impression you intend to make?” I then help them identify what kind of impression they would like to make and what makes them feel confident, especially in regard to attending an interview, conducting a meeting, public speaking, asking for a promotion, and so on. Once these key factors are identified, I help clients figure out a system to achieve their goals.
“The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.” – George
Bernard ShawSuccessful communication means getting the right message to the correct person in an accurate and efficient manner. Remember that just as people have different learning styles, they also have different communication styles. Understand your own communication style, its pros and cons, and then understand the communication style of the person you are communicating with. To increase the success of your communication, adjust your style to match their style.
Remember that just because you said something or sent an email or a text does not mean you have communicated; you’ve simply said or passed on words. You know your message was received correctly if the other person can articulate back the main points of the message.
“Accountability breeds responsibility.” – Stephen R. Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
In my meetings with clients, we focus on personal accountability and how they show up in the interaction. My job is to hold a mirror up to them and help them look inward.
I often ask, “Did you do anything to contribute to the situation (even if it’s just a small part)? What more could you have done? Is there anything you failed to do?” Once we are accountable for our own actions, we build responsibility and self-worth, follow through, and trust. This in turn builds confidence.
“Your first and foremost job as a leader is to take charge of your own energy and then help to orchestrate the energy of those around you.” – Peter Drucker
Self-awareness and self-control are key to building confidence. You want to be calm, compassionate, and proactive, not reactionary.
You can achieve this by practicing mindfulness in the present, giving your undivided attention to the person you are talking to, and making your interactions count. These techniques are useful when leading, having difficult conversations, setting boundaries, parenting, and in many other aspects of daily life.
“Don’t compare your life with others. There’s no comparison between the sun and the moon. They shine when it’s their time to shine.” – Anonymous
Stay in your own lane; don’t worry about others.
When I work with clients, I have them shift the power to themselves. It doesn’t do any good to try to change others or wish others would do things differently. After all, the only thing we can control is ourselves! Once we realize this, we are now in control of the situation, which in turn decreases anxiety and increases confidence.
“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.” – Steve Jobs
It takes all types of people to make the world go ’round, so ask yourself, “What makes you unique? Where do you excel? What strengths can you bring to the table?”
The strengths-based leadership theory encourages leaders to 1) focus on potential instead of obstacles and 2) shift from focusing time and resources on improving shortfalls to moving toward capitalizing on strengths. When you focus on strengths, you can accelerate from good to great.
Sharpen Your Saw
“Sharpen the saw means preserving and enhancing the greatest asset you have—you. It means having a balanced program for self-renewal in the four areas of your life: physical, social/emotional, mental, and spiritual.” – Stephen
R. CoveyWhat are you doing to renew yourself so you don’t plateau?
Think of it like this: a lumberjack can’t continue to chop wood everyday if he doesn’t regularly sharpen his saw. When you sharpen your saw, you are increasing your knowledge, skills, abilities, and personal and professional growth.
Make the Most of Your Time
“It’s not enough to be busy…The question is: what are we busy about?” – Henry
David ThoreauHave you ever heard the saying “If you want something done, give it to a busy person”?
Things get done because these people know how to manage their time. You want to make sure you are busy with the right things: items that are both urgent and important, tasks that align with your personal and professional goals, and things that matter and have value.
Make sure you are organizing your space, completing tasks fully, allotting enough time to complete these tasks, and saying “yes” to the important things. If you use your time wisely, you will become confident in the important areas of your life and have more quality time.
Humbly Own Your Success, But Be Proud!
“Be strong, but not rude; Be kind, but not weak; Be bold, but not bully; Be humble, but not timid; Be proud, but not arrogant.” – Zig
ZiglarHumble people are willing to see themselves accurately and are open to feedback—both positive and constructive. They view feedback as a gift and listen to suggestions in order to improve.
A humble person takes accountability for their errors, views them as a learning tool, and implements the lessons learned in their future actions. This gives them an edge over others, as they are constantly refining.
You can humbly own your success. Never apologize for it. Be proud of your hard work, persistence, tenacity, and the lessons learned along the way.
By doing this inner work, you will naturally find improvements in communication, boundaries, respect, and even self-care. When you see value in your worth, others will too!

Perched atop the Bluffs, overlooking the San Joaquin Golf Course, is one of Fresno’s architectural works of art. Every inch of this 4,233-square-foot home has been meticulously designed. Initially, I started with a couple of rooms, but then my clients were hooked…they wanted the whole house to be “Katie-fied!” This was one of those once-in-a-lifetime projects where it’s all just smooth sailing into the most impeccable work. This project speaks to my brand and personal style, as it is designed without compromise. If we wanted to do something, we did it. In the end, every choice was perfect. Using bold statements, in all the right ways, I’ve exhibited where to be loud and where to be soft.
The bones of this home are strong and striking. The original architecture incorporates soaring ceilings and glass walls. Each piece of furniture is unique. Every wallcovering, pillow, and window treatment was specifically designed with a chic vibe in mind. We started with a light, bright palette as the backdrop for the home. Textures, understated colors, and shapes were layered throughout. Warm marble and white oak floors run through the top main floor. On this floor, we sprinkled in woven naturals and shades of black in all the right spots.
Through double doors into the foyer, you’ll see a subtle yet sculptural chandelier with several tiers of whitewashed wood and curved iron arms. When switched on, the light glows from within, transforming the space into something magical! Beyond the foyer is the main living room, featuring an abstract watercolor mural. The pattern color “grey on marshmallow” drips down the walls descreetly and adds just enough interest without distracting from the views. I placed a luscious 10-foot katana palm tree in front of the mural to accentuate the soaring ceiling. Many of the furnishings in the living room incorporate curves and are especially prevalent on the curved plywood and glass cocktail table, which exemplifies the impact of daring elements in all the right areas.
The kitchen is drenched in Calacatta Belgia, a dramatic white Italian marble embellished with silver and grey striations. Crisp white cabinetry and luxurious polished nickel hardware are paired with the marble. My clients not only wanted to finish and furnish the space but also wanted every detail to be given the utmost attention. This included waiting 16 weeks for the perfect custom area rug for the kitchen sitting area. In addition, the carefully curated foliage in this space adds greenery and brings life to the room. As a result, the kitchen feels upscale but casual enough for cooking and lounging.
The original homeowner’s antique brass and burled wood furniture is showcased in the dining room. We layered in wallpaper, a bone-inlay console table, and hints of navy velvet. An organically formed white plaster chandelier adorns the angular wood ceiling. It sets just the right mood for all-night entertaining. When ready for an after-dinner drink, you can step outside the dining room and mix up a cocktail in the wet bar. I covered the walls in a petite charcoal herringbone pattern in this area and framed my client’s artwork in hand-chiseled gold leaf frames.
Ahand-knotted Moroccan-style area rug sets the stage for the primary suite. Again, I used a bit more contrast to create drama. Engaging a bold move, I used a decadent black sheer drapery, which marries fine natural materials with dots of embroidery. Nightstands flank a channel-upholstered bed in an understated silhouette. The nightstands are clad in rich shagreen-embossed leather, a reproduction of the texture and intricate pattern of natural stingray hide. The primary bath is another area covered with marble floors and countertops, with an inset tile rug to ground the space.
Heading down the elevator, you enter the artist’s lounge. Polished concrete floors are the base for the rich colors and geometric patterns used here. My client is an artist, so I wanted to display her artwork in a unique way. We covered the back wall in a large-scale swirling line pattern to serve as a backdrop for the burled wood frames. We then showcased artwork within the open frames. I used natural materials such as petrified wood, silk, and cork in this space. The wood ceiling is an original characteristic of the home. Just past the artist’s lounge, the guest bedroom features a jungle-esque drapery mixed with hints of abstract polka dots. Rich forest green and gold accents make this space sing.
When designing a space, I thoroughly enjoy taking my client’s vision, giving it my own twist, and creating the perfect environment for clients to enjoy and share. By focusing on a client-centered approach, we created a balance of cohesion and collaboration. Yet, every room in this home also showcases the full extent of creativity. I always say, “It’s easy to work hard when you love what you do!” This was especially true for this project.
