solation is hard. It throws the rhythm of our day-to-day life off-kilter. Our priorities have shifted, and the things which seemed so important a few weeks ago just don’t matter as much. We all have grown for better or worse during the course of this pandemic. As we reflect on the past few months, it is important to remember the perspective we have gained and mourn the losses we have experienced.
In the meantime, we encourage you to look at what we can do collectively to help our neighbors and friends. Check in on your elderly loved ones (if possible), donate to a food bank, or just simply pick up the phone and call a friend who might be alone during this period of isolation. We all need some encouragement right about now. We hope all of you continue to remain well, and remember this, too, shall pass.
Our team struggled when working on this Home & Garden Issue. What would be appropriate for these uncertain times we live in? We all agreed that the best way to deal with this feeling was to produce the magazine in its original form, yet with a few modifications to observe the state of our community. The idea, our objective, is to bring some sense of normalcy to the lives of all our cherished readers, advertisers, and subscribers. All of you have become friends to us, and we can hardly wait for the day when we can see each and every one of you in person again.
Stay strong, stay safe, and stay positive.

opular TV shows like Mad Men and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, depicting the American lifestyle in the mid twentieth century, remind us what it was like to live in an era where cigarette smoking, drinking, and feminism were all prevalent parts of everyday life. We often look back on that time and fondly appreciate the freedom to pour ourselves a drink mid-day at the office or light up a cigarette indoors without the scolding eyes of others. Today, many of my clients desire a place of their own that provides an escape—a space where they can surround themselves in the glamour and excess of 1960s American society. For this swanky home lounge, I immediately fell in love with the client’s black and white print of Roger Moore as James Bond… with cigarette and drink in hand. Other than this print and the bar cabinetry, the room was a blank slate. Metal, glass, and velvet mix together to give this room its opulent feel. For seating, a couch and armchair offer an elegant arrangement—both are upholstered in a soft gray velvet with a plinth base in brushed brass. A glass and Lucite coffee table adds additional interest without being too visually massive. The barstools are a favorite element—they are clad in polished brass with an upholstered seat (lightening the weightiness of the bar), which helps bring balance to the rest of the space. Plus, they are ultra-stylish! The countertop and back wall of the bar are finished with an onyx slab and backlit with LED lighting, drawing the eye up and adding drama to the space.

estled in the heart of Fresno’s Old Fig Garden neighborhood, this traditional Spanish Revival dares to break all the rules. But in order for a house to truly feel like home, it must embody the spirit of its dwellers, and this home’s dwellers are anything but conventional.
bring contrast to the entryway, a black sideboard with metal doors plays nicely off the old-world staircase. Atop we paired custom artwork, by local artist Chance James, with sculptural accents. Beyond the staircase lies the dining area, which provides a simple yet meaningful backdrop to the space.
To achieve a truly unique vibe, we first needed to properly space plan. The home has many large open spaces. We needed to determine what type of activities would take place in each area. This is the crucial part in the planning process. The placement of furniture dictates the entire flow and energy of the house, making it either harmonious or segmented.
Who could debate the traditional beauty of a floating staircase with handpainted tiles, a magnificent entryway that feels more like a ballroom than a passthrough, or a custom balustrade created from pure wrought iron?
The entryway is a large rectangle totaling one thousand square feet, and a large winding staircase floats from the second story and affixes itself as a massive focal point. Although the space had some inherent majesty, its grandeur was lost in all the openness. It was soon discovered that we could have the entryway double as a formal dining room. Once the floor plan was finalized, we began to bend the rules with modern furniture, custom art, and a color palette that veered from tradition. To
Another highlight of this home is the kitchen. The cabinets are handglazed in a dark umber hue, playing to the home’s Spanish architecture, and modern, brushed gold accents are sprinkled throughout. An oversized chandelier hangs elegantly above the island, making it an exceptional focal point. We kept with a very limited palette throughout the entire house. Nowhere is that more evident than the master bedroom. Grays, blacks, and whites blend with natural wood elements and provide a relaxing retreat for the homeowners.

hen Peter Facinelli speaks about his fiancée Lily Anne Harrison, you can’t help but notice the adoration in his voice. The couple became engaged over the holidays, while vacationing south of the boarder. “It’s our little getaway. We travel down to Mexico often,” given that it’s only a couple hours from Los Angeles, where the couple live and work. “We end up going down there quite a bit.” So much so that their friends tease them about being drug mules, Peter explains with the chuckle.
Heche, Thomas Jane, and Jason Patric) marks his second feature film as a director, but it is the first movie Peter has both written and directed, as well as acted in.
But what we really want to know is if Lily saw it coming. “I didn’t really, because we usually take a sort of annual holiday trip down there with Peter’s kids and sometimes my family will come, too. There wasn’t really any indication that it was coming on that particular trip. So it was a really, really lovely surprise.” Peter interjects to question the validity of Lily’s recollection, and the two laugh as she finally admits only a bit of suspicion. “I thought it was coming, I just didn’t think it was coming on that trip, mostly because I didn’t think he had a ring,” she clarifies.
A psychological thriller, Hour of Lead is about a couple who go to an RV park with their daughter who, subsequently, goes missing. “It’s pretty much every parent’s worst nightmare—when their kid disappears,” even if just for a few moments. “It feels like an eternity.” The film explores that theme—how would you handle the disappearance of your child?
The ultimate family man type, Peter’s kids were there. As he was leaving the hotel for that life-altering dinner with Lily, his 13-year-old daughter, who knew about the plan, offered some sweet words of encouragement. “Don’t be nervous, Dad.” It’s a small moment, but one that illustrates the strength of the Facinelli family bond—something that stems from Peter’s Italian roots and upbringing. He is known to be someone who carefully chose roles that wouldn’t take him away from his kids. Most of the world recognizes Peter as the vampire patriarch Carlisle Cullen of The Twilight Saga film series. But now that his girls are older, Peter is taking on edgier roles that allow him to be more selective about the type of characters he wants to play. Peter stars in two feature films due out later this year: The Ravine and Thirteen Minutes. Can’t Hardly Wait, the cult classic in which he played Mike Dexter opposite Jennifer Love Hewitt, just made its way to Netflix. Yet 2020 is a milestone for another reason. Hour of Lead (starring Anne
To clear up any confusion, the movie’s name is pronounced Hour of Lead as in “pencil lead,” not to rhyme with “bead.” The title (named to reference Emily Dickinson’s 1862 poem) is meant to illicit the pit-feeling of dread that stems from a moment of panic.
RVing was a part of the childhood vacations Peter facilitated for his kids. On one particular trip, “About an hour in, I heard gunshots.” When he asked the front desk what happened, the clerk’s response was unsettling. “Oh don’t worry, there’s a prison nearby. They do tactical tests sometimes.” Apparently two or three shots were normal… “If you hear more than that, come to the front desk immediately,” Peter was told. “I started wondering what would happen if your kid went missing at an RV park where such a horrific thing happened amongst beauty. And then you’re looking for a needle in a haystack.” The film idea germinated from that trip. From there, Peter felt like the screenplay sort of wrote itself, completing it in a mere three weeks. Actors aim to get every take right, but directors search for special moments. “You’re looking for really truthful moments as a director, because you know that everything is cut up,” and that certainly alters perspective. “Filmmaking is such a huge collaboration … That’s one of the things I love about directing—I get to collaborate with the wardrobe department and the makeup department, the actors,” all of whom the director relies on to bring their A-game.

I think, also, it helps that we have such a strong friendship … Like, we really like each other … I don’t think that’s as common as it should be. Hour of Lead debuted at the Mammoth Film Festival in early spring, and will be released in theaters on August 21st. You’ll recognize Peter as Deputy Rakes. Keep an eye out for Lily, who auditioned for and earned the role of Janet, as well as her father, legendary actor Gregory Harrison, who plays Dr. Bradley. Though a writer at heart, Lily is an actress as well. She grew up as a Hollywood kid, but doesn’t care much for the glitz and glam. “Whatever your family business is, there’s a certain amount of just comfort there. But truthfully, I knew really, really early on that I wanted to go into the arts.” Being on set from a young age, she remembers seeing all the moving parts and how magical it all seemed. “Somewhere in my twenties, I started to feel frustrated with the roles that were available to me, and the stuff I was auditioning for, and I also started to see a lot of women crop up around me that were making careers for themselves, like Lena Dunham and Greta Gerwig, and I started to really identify with that kind of career—a sort of ‘piece it together’ version of acting and writing, and hopefully eventually directing.” The magic is still there for her. “Writing is great because it’s something I can do essentially all on my own—to create an entire world just from my imagination.” With a love for getting to know the complexities of the characters she plays, Lily writes practically all day most days. An innate modesty reveals itself when Lily only touches on the fact that she has several projects in the works—Peter is the one to interject, singing the praises of her accomplishments and discipline. “I’m so impressed by her. It takes a lot of dedication to get up every morning and treat it like a job. She gets up at 7:30, 8 o’clock in the morning and just starts writing,” Peter boasts on Lily’s behalf. “And she’s always writing a bunch of different pieces. And I just think she’s so talented!” Rather than feel jealous of their partner’s work demands, “We have this admiration for each other’s work and work discipline,” says Peter. “Anytime she’s working on something, I’m excited for her … and vice versa.” “When he’s enjoying his art … I really respect that—friend to friend, and artist to artist,” Lily adds. A mutual respect for each other’s craft is evident. “I think, also, it helps that we have such a strong friendship,” elaborates Lily. “Like, we really like each other … I don’t think that’s as common as it should be.”
Plus, “I think we’re lucky because we have very similar taste in a lot of things, especially when it comes to things like material, we kind of get each other,” Lily explains as Peter agrees. Take something as simple as their mutual love of Mexico, for example: “Her and I both really love Mexican food and beach weather. It’s nice to have somebody who likes to travel to the same kind of vacation destinations. It’s nice to both like the sun and sand.” The couple take advantage of the Californian sun, too, enjoying their beautiful neighborhood with regular walks to local eateries, and savoring time spent at the home they have created together. Peter and Lily’s residential shoot reflects a mood board with retro vibes— think Old Hollywood feels with references to King Cool. Befitting, given that Paul Newman and Robert Redford’s performances in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid are part of what inspired Peter to pursue acting. Their home echoes an affinity for sanctuary that can easily transform into an effortless platform for entertaining, which Peter and Lily love to do even on short notice. “I grew up in a neighborhood that was very walkable to things, and the neighbors all kind of knew each other. So I like having that where I live,” Peter reminisces. “And a lot of our closest friends actually live within walking distance of us,” follows Lily. She loves to cook and often hosts close friends for intimate gatherings, which fits seamlessly with Peter’s desire to facilitate socialization. Peter jokingly fancies himself a sort of Gatsby, seeing as the couple’s impromptu get-togethers sometimes turn into unexpected house parties. “We like to have people over with barbeques, or game nights, poker nights…” For Peter, “It’s fun to have lots of people over to connect with each other,” even if he stays in the background grilling for their guests— there is a certain comfort in being surrounded, though still able to observe and absorb. It is those moments that seem to be most missed during this unprecedented time, where social distancing prevents a type of relationship growth that cannot quite be attained through virtual contact. Yet, being forced to stay within the confines of our houses can also allow us to make our homes, well, homier. In a world of instant satisfaction, we have a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity to truly slow down, take a real breath, smell the roses, and do the things that indefinitely sit on our “someday/maybe” lists. Take advantage of your immediate surroundings, be inspired by the little things, nurture common interests, seek happiness in the mundane, and remember to carry that sentiment on when we no longer are bound by these current confines.

his house went from tired and traditional to woodsy chic without breaking the bank. Our client wanted a complete facelift without major surgery. We were able to achieve a massive transformation without making any structural changes to the home.
In the kitchen, we salvaged the existing cabinetry by replacing the cabinet doors, adding new hardware, and freshening the space with clean, white paint. The sunroom is one of our favorite spaces in the house. Our client requested emerald green as an accent color. What better way to add emerald green than with an amazing emerald green, velvet sofa? The black rattan chairs are airy and provide the perfect balance to the heavier velvet couch. On the wall, a forest themed, engraved armoire opens to provide a full-service bar, perfect for entertaining in this cool new space. Beyond the sunroom lies the not-so-formal dining room. A natural wood table pairs with black bistro chairs, while oversized wicker pendants make this room feel inviting, devoid of pretension. Rounding out the space, a mysterious black and emerald print of foliage acts as an intriguing focal point. When it came to the great room, an existing fireplace clad in flagstone was to remain. Visually, this is a very heavy element. Our biggest challenge was to find furniture that would stand up to this feature without overwhelming it. Custom couches upholstered in a large-scale motif flank the fireplace, and an earth-tone rug helps to anchor the space. For a coffee table, we brought in a large ottoman, perfect for kicking your feet up and relaxing by the fire. With a mostly neutral color palette, we were able to add so much visual interest with emerald accents and an array of live house plants, while vintage accessories and modern lighting give this home a whimsical air with a touch of glam.

Providing every client with unmatched customer service.
ROB SPARKS, REALTOR FRESNO, CALIFORNIA
B
eing an industry leader for over a decade has made me very knowledgeable, which I pass on to my clients, colleagues, and friends. Learning what makes each customer tick helps me hit the nail on the head when delivering home ownership to all types of homebuyers and investors. I take my role seriously, as real estate is the biggest purchase a person will make in their lifetime—it needs all the right moving parts. Facilitating this process is truly fulfilling and gratifying, and I enjoy every step of the way!
WHAT I LOVE ABOUT MY PROFESSION Throughout my real estate career, each day, customer, and situation is different. I love that I can use my love for helping people and brainstorming ideas to help my clients achieve their real estate goals and make them feel comfortable while doing so—if my clients don’t feel comfortable, I don’t feel comfortable. MY INSPIRATION Growing up from very humble beginnings, I knew there was more out there and I wanted to become successful, knowing nothing would be handed to me. Given a strong work ethic from my family, I started working at a very young age, surrounded myself with successful people, and learned to network, which are the keys to running a successful business. WHAT I’M BEST KNOWN FOR I pride myself in customer service and run my business on over 95% referral. My clients come first, as they are the blood of my business. I love to entertain them with dinners, events, client appreciations, and so much more—I make the home buying experience a true experience! Working on referral is something I enjoy because I feel like I’m constantly working with friends. BEST ADVICE WHEN BUYING A HOME I always tell people to take their time, have a good lender, and have realistic expectations. Figure out your preferred neighborhood, school districts, wants, and must-haves. Then make sure you have proper representation—someone who is well versed, has strong negotiating skills, and works hard to get you the best deal.

RIVERSTONE LOOK FORWARD TO LIFE
Riverstone lights up with hope and kindness.
MADERA, CALIFORNIA
R
iverstone has a specialty that goes beyond land development. We want to create a place where people can join a community to build amazing lives for their families. The neighbors at Riverstone can enjoy what the land once was by walking through the community and seeing the olive trees that used to cover the land. Now these olive trees line walkways that families enjoy with their friends, four-legged or otherwise.
WHAT SETS OUR COMMUNITY APART Those who choose to thrive here give the community life and inspiration to come together in good times and when things get rough. Whether it is sharing home-cooked recipes or at-home activities with your kids, neighbors have rallied together now more than ever. Although they may not be physically coming together, their support of each other has kept everyone’s spirits bright. HOW SOCIAL MEDIA HAS BROUGHT US TOGETHER In a time where there is an emphasis on social media, our community has found fun ways to keep “sheltering in place” exciting. Families decorated their living rooms in creative Hawaiian themes with items they could find in their homes and shared their incredible photos on the community’s Facebook page. Those who have enjoyed walking around the neighborhood stumble upon rocks painted by neighborhood children, located along the sidewalks—passersby even snapped photos and uploaded them for others to enjoy. Every day our community rallies together to find more and more ways to connect and be social, while respecting our current circumstances.
The olive trees along Riverstone’s Market Street are being illuminated to show appreciation for our healthcare workers and to brighten the spirits of our residents.

A Closer Look:
Peptides
Beauty Editor Jessica McCafferty
It’s the buzzworthy ingredient you might be noticing lately. More and more skincare products are featuring a powerful ingredient called peptides. But what exactly are they and why should you try them? Let’s take a closer look. “Our skin is comprised mostly from proteins like collagen and elastin. Each protein is built from amino acids arranged into a long chain. A peptide is a fragment of protein made from just a few amino acids linked together,” explains Elina Fedotova, celebrity esthetician and founder of Elina Organics Spas & Skincare. “They have the ability to penetrate through the skin barrier, deep into our live skin cells, and signal them to regenerate collagen and other proteins.” In essence, our skin’s cells communicate with each other by peptides and proteins. Natural peptides have the ability to restore damaged skin cells. What benefits do they give your skin? “They definitely add anti-aging, deeply hydrating, and skin-restoring properties to any skincare formulation,” explains Fedotova. For Elina Organics’ formulations, many of her products contain this powerhouse, including her Natural Peptide Mask, which helps to hydrate, nourish, and visibly firm your skin. A leave-on mask like this one is different from a moisturizer because it contains a higher concentration of active ingredients. In this case, its natural peptides help to repair your skin on a cellular level.
2
Fresh Chemistry’s Wrinkle Release Peptide Serum Supercharged Set features four different products, containing heavy-hitting peptides and an Amazonian nut oil. When delivered fresh to the skin, the set packs a powerful punch to help reduce fine lines, boost collagen production, and increase antioxidant protection.
To start, what exactly are peptides?
“When looking at the overall formulation of a skincare product, you want to make sure it has as many proven scientific, beneficial ingredients as possible—peptides included,” shares LA-based celebrity esthetician Joshua Ross of SKINLAB. “As we age, we lose collagen (particularly after the age of 30), and by replacing it with topical peptides, it can help slow the aging process.”
1
Other great options include Free + True Skincare’s Mama Pacha. This nutrient-rich cream delivers intense moisture with arctic peptides. These glycoproteins are found in marine environments, deeply moisturize, increase collagen production, and soften fine lines.
Vitabrid C12 is another great beauty brand doing wonders with peptides. Although peptides are great for collagen synthesis and regeneration, their instability and challenges with skin absorption can be drawbacks. This brand has addressed both of these limitations with a new biomaterial, which allows for greater skin permeability and deep delivery into the skin. Peptibrid®️ is their patented ingredient that helps the purity and permeation rate of peptides, stimulating cells to boost collagen synthesis.
Quick absorbing and deeply hydrating, the Dual Drop Serum by Vitabrid C12 is pairing its proprietary form of vitamin C with Peptibrid®️ for brighter skin, reduced fine lines, and antioxidant protection. As the name suggests, this is done all in one drop! With so many topical formulas available, it has never been easier to integrate beauty peptides into your skincare routine—trust us, your skin will thank you later.

ctress Julie Benz has been expressing an inherent creativity since early childhood. Growing up with a figure skater mother, she began skating at age three. Though gifted on the ice, a bad stress fracture at 14 years old forced her to take time off, which is when she turned to the stage. After high school, Julie entered New York University to study acting. Upon graduation, she moved to Los Angeles, landing several small roles in big-name movies and TV shows. Being cast as Darla in Buffy the Vampire Slayer made Julie a household name, jump-starting a sustained and remarkable career. A number of guest-starring roles in popular television shows (including CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and Supernatural) and both lead and supporting roles in various made-for-TV movies followed. Being cast as a lead and starring in No Ordinary Family and Defiance further cemented her stardom, yet it is the role of Rita on Dexter that pivotally changed Julie’s life. Today, Julie is relishing the progress of women in the film industry, savoring time spent at home, and reflecting on the state of our world.
ER How have you personally evolved with your career? JB In the early years of my career, I was insecure and lacked confidence. I was always trying to be what I thought others wanted me to be. I didn’t think that being “just me” was interesting enough. All that changed once I was cast as Rita in Dexter. For the first time, I realized that I was enough—that I didn’t need hair and makeup, I didn’t need to put spin on the ball, that being me was enough…and powerful. I learned that there are things I bring naturally to a role and that I don’t need to push those areas, and there are other areas that yes, I do need to push a little more. This lesson also applies to my own life—in my thirties, I stopped trying to please others and started living life on my own terms.
ER How do you overcome professional struggles? JB I’ve been an actor for over 30 years and the one lesson I’ve learned is that work comes and goes. The most important thing through it all is staying healthy, mentally and physically. I wake up and work out every morning, more for my mental health than anything else. There’s something exhilarating about starting the day with physical movement—for me, its dance. I can lose myself in a dance class. It quiets my mind and acts like a reset button. Not to say I don’t struggle, but I find I can handle my struggles better when I start my day with a good sweat.
ER What is Hollywood getting right, right now? JB The role of women in storytelling! There are so many more amazing roles out there for actresses right now, especially older actresses and especially in television. That’s why we are seeing more and more A-list female movie stars producing and starring in television series. And the roles are meaty. Women are no longer cast as the “mother/wife/victim” role, but as more dynamic participants to the story structure. We still have a long way to go for equality in the industry, but I’m excited about what’s happening right now. ER Tell us about the last thing that moved you deeply. JB My father-in-law has been battling cancer for the last couple months. Watching my husband help care for his dad moves me incredibly. He is extremely patient, deeply loving, and a tremendous support. He does it all with grace and quietude. His dad is his best friend and witnessing the love between father and son is so profoundly moving, especially when we live in a world where so many people have a fractured relationship with their parents.

For the first time, I realized that I was enough—that I didn’t need hair and makeup, I didn’t need to put spin on the ball, that being me was enough…and powerful.
ER What kind of work currently captures your interest? JB I’ve always been attracted to complex characters. I call them onion characters—peeling back the many layers like an onion to reveal the core. These types of characters are the most interesting to me. In On Becoming a God in Central Florida (on Showtime), I play Carole Wilkes. From the outside, Carole is the perfect FAM wife with the perfect FAM family. But as the show progresses, the layers of the onion are peeled away and you realize that’s not the case. I’m also attracted to projects that create change and raise awareness. Foster Boy is a film I’m in about corruption in the forprofit foster care system. It’s based on true events and presents a compelling case for reform in our foster care system. The movie is playing the festival circuit right now and has been referred to as a type of art activism. ER In what ways does your conduct reflect your convictions? JB I try to lead with kindness and empathy in everything I do. We live in a society where it is very easy to fall into “I want” and “I need” and we forget about others—especially in times of fear. We see it right now with everyone hoarding toilet paper. Trust me, the week leading up to quarantine, I was overwrought with anxiety and fear—worried about having enough food and supplies for my family, wanting to buy multiples of everything “just in case.” In order to ease my fear, I emptied out my pantry, freezer, and refrigerator; I pulled out everything so I could see what I already had, and realized I had enough supplies for us to live on for a couple weeks—that any
trip to the store would be hoarding and taking supplies away from others who might really need them. We don’t have a toilet paper shortage, but an empathy shortage. ER Share something about yourself that might surprise people. JB I’m a homebody. I love being home. I love cooking and cleaning and doing laundry. I find comfort in chores around the house. Cooking has been a secret passion of mine for years. I love trying new recipes and experimenting with different flavors. And I can whip up a dinner party on short notice. So many people have told me I need to do a cooking show or write a cookbook, but I worry it would ruin my love for being in the kitchen. It’s a creative outlet for me between acting jobs—a way I express my creativity. ER What do you do when you need to rejuvenate your spirit? JB Get outside…go for a long walk. I love walking and listening to podcasts. I find walking, being in nature, being outside, a quick and easy way to rejuvenate my spirit. It’s become even more important now during this world crisis we are in. Remember that song by Missing Persons, “Walking in LA”? It goes “Walkin’ in LA, nobody walks in LA…” That’s true! Nobody ever walked in LA! Now, everyone is walking! I see more people out walking than ever before. I love waving (from a social distance) to neighbors that I’ve never seen before. That simple human interaction has brought me so much joy during this stressful time.

Floral print garments are louder than usual this season, and doubly striking when you mix and match prints. Utilize various eye-catching, flirty designs. Shop your closet to transform old pieces into new outfits. From self to shelf, don’t be afraid to spice up your interior design, too! 3
