Sense of Community

O

ver the past year, it is safe to say that home and community have never been so important. The greater Fresno area, and surrounding Central Valley, has always played a pivotal role in shaping the CVLUX brand. We have been so fortunate to call “the heart” of California our home for the last eight years. In the next few issues, you may notice some changes to our publication as we more deeply explore localized content. Like our readers and advertisers, we are acutely invested in the combined effort that is required to bring our community back to life in a post-pandemic world.

break down highlights and what each section offers their residents. Think of it as a quick real estate guide, either for your own reference or perhaps for a family member relocating to the area.

Our recommitment to the community starts with this May|Jun Edition and an interview with new mayor, Jerry Dyer. We talk community spirit, and what drives the City of Fresno, as we look towards the future.

We hope you have a healthy and more joyful summer, as we turn the page in our next chapter of life.

This leads to our personal favorite section of the magazine, LUX locale. Here you will find some of the Valley’s most sought-after communities—we

Another Valley favorite will be making its return later this year: the Luxury Awards. Nominations for this prestigious recognition start in July—get ready to share your favorites with us all month long. We have already started working on the party preparations and have many surprises up our sleeves! DEGREES OF SANITY Fashion Editor Alma Wolverton

1. I’m breathing.

Aroma is everything! I discovered a peppermint essential oil roll-on stick, and I mostly use it around my forehead and temples—not only does it smell great, but it helps with headaches, too. Plus, the easy-to-use design and compact size make it travel-friendly. UpNature Essential Oil Roll-On in Peppermint $14.99 from www.amazon.com

3. I’m drinking.

Coffee keeps me going, and it is part of my daily routine. Black coffee with a splash of almond milk is how I take it (no sugar). At home, I have been enjoying a local favorite from Two Cities Coffee Roasters, who offers beans for a variety of roast preferences. Two Cities Coffee Roasters Two Cities Espresso $15.00 from www.twocitiescoffee.com

2. I’m virtually volunteering.

4. I’m being honest.

I’m one of the many proud ambassadors to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Central Valley. I help raise awareness about this non-profit, who is in need of funding for their Meals From the Heart and Adopt-A-Meal programs, which serve the families staying there.

And let’s keep it real… I like a good wine, as well. Centralized in the Valley, Brix & Barrel’s subscription service allows you to enjoy Californian wines handpicked by a local professional sommelier. Reflecting on my personal style, I recommend “The Cutting Edge” option.

Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Central Valley www.rmhccv.org

Brix & Barrel The Cutting Edge $75.00 from www.brixandbarrel.com

5. I’m marathon training.

Running outdoors is COVID-19-safe and a great way to connect with Mother Nature, and while training indoors, I use the Peloton app for only $12.99 per month. This November, I am supporting my local community by participating in the Two Cities Marathon. Fleet Feet Two Cities Marathon $60.00 to $130.00 from www.runsignup.com

6. I’m shopping.

Conscious spending has never been more important, and retail therapy is indeed a mood booster—both of which have become all the more important over the past year. My stylist pick during quarantine is by far a good flat for comfort, especially this spring. Billini Alaia in Black Croc $65.00 from www.shoppumbum.com

Slate A Clean

The Best White Paint Colors Interiors Editor Erin Melkonian

—23— MAY | JUN

A

s a designer who loves color, selecting the perfect white paint has always been a challenge. For years, every time I was tasked with picking a shade of white, I would shrink into the corner and procrastinate like hell. It’s all the undertones. The undertones scare me. The sage greens and butter yellows that lurked just under the surface had the potential of derailing my entire design. Maybe I should just paint the room navy blue? Or how about olive green? Wallpaper would be a perfect solution! However, there always comes a time when asserting such boldness into a design just isn’t warranted. There are those spaces that require a more subtle approach. These rooms are fully exposed, enticing the occupant to experience every square inch of its being. The beauty is not in the barrage of colors splashes but in the stoic solitude of the perfect shade of white. Now, I’m not claiming to be an expert when it comes to picking the perfect ivory hue, but I have honed my skills considerably over the years. Through trial and error (I once repainted a client’s dining room three times), I have found some go-to whites that I absolutely cannot live without.

Before selecting your perfect shade of pale, there are a few things to consider. The first thing I evaluate is whether or not the baseboards and trim will be painted. I have found that coordinating two shades of white is nearly impossible. For that reason, I mostly select the same color for all the walls and trim. If the trim is to be left alone, then I match the color of the trim. If you are painting your cabinets white, be aware of the color of your appliances. If you have white appliances, either the appliance or the wall will appear dingy. When I encounter white appliances, which are becoming more and more popular, I almost always steer my clients away from selecting white for their cabinetry. Usually, a muted blue tone or a velvet gray tone works beautifully. The sheen, or luster of the surface, is another important point to ponder. I like my whites to be cleanable. For heavier drywall texture, like orange peel or knockdown, I tend to select an eggshell finish. It tones down the texture but is still able to be wiped clean with a damp cloth. For drywall with a smooth surface, the drama of a satin finish is my absolute favorite. I often select the same sheen for the walls and trim. Now, let’s dive into my favorite snowy hues!

White Dove Benjamin Moore

Interiors Editor Erin Melkonian Photographer EMID Design Group

From Benjamin Moore, White Dove is a crisp and balanced white. It has the perfect amount of depth and warmth without any overpowering yellows. I find this paint color most fitting in spaces with a lot of natural light.

2

Chantilly Lace Benjamin Moore

Interior Designer Becki Owens Builder Cole West Home Photographer Mykal Bush

Another favorite is Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace. Many designers tout it as the most versatile of all the white paints. It’s extremely bright without being too stark! It’s warm and welcoming instead of sterile and cold.

3

Slipper Satin Farrow & Ball

Source Farrow & Ball Slipper Satin by Farrow & Ball boasts a silky texture and pale chalk hue. Though it may appear more greige or beige in the can, don’t be scared—it translates au naturel. This great neutral is devoid of any cool blue undertones.

4

Winter White Benjamin Moore

Winter White by Benjamin Moore is a great choice for modern spaces that beg for an ounce of sterility. Kitchens especially look marvelous in this shade, as it wonderfully compliments most hardware options and light sources.

A Closer Look

The Future of Beauty Beauty Editor Jessica McCafferty

The continuous evolution of beauty is one of the most exciting parts of the industry. There is always something new and different to try. But if the last year has shown us anything, it’s that the future of beauty is at home. Let’s take a closer look at the high-tech beauty devices that will revolutionize your glam game, wherever you are. Glamnetic Glamnetic has become one of the fastest-growing beauty brands in the industry since its launch in 2019, averaging over seven figures per month in sales. Their innovation? Replacing messy and hard-to-apply false eyelashes, which need glue, with magnetic liner and lashes. Since the initial launch of Glamnetic’s 5-magnet lash, a first-to-market concept, creator Ann McFerran has continuously strived to improve the brand. Starting at $24.99, the lashes are now pre-cut to 2.9 cm (the average length of a human eye), and their magnetic liner formula (starting at $37.99) is the best in the market. They have over 40 lash styles to choose from (42, to be exact!), and they can all be used over 40 times! Nushape Nushape’s patented red light therapy, called Lipo Wrap, is the “lipo alternative” for quick fat loss and cellulite control. It uses powerful but gentle LEDs to reach the fat layer, draining the cells of toxins and waste, resulting in lost inches, spot reduction in areas with stubborn fat, and toned skin. The wearable, portable belt is engineered to be a “hands-off” system and is made with 600 LED chips in 635 nm red light and 850 nm infrared waves

that slim the body, whittling away stubborn areas. Priced at $497.00, the easy-to-use wrap is suitable for all sizes, ages, and genders, is completely non-invasive, and offers immediate results—up to two inches of belly fat reduction in just one week! Glo As the only domestic patented, innovative anti-cellulite beauty device, Glo 910+ is helping to solve some of the biggest health and cosmetic problems affecting women. The Glo 910+ efficiently fights cellulite and localized fat and other associated health issues such as swelling, heavy legs, pain, poor circulation, and more. This anti-cellulite massage device retails for $299.00 and includes four different treatment heads, catering to different types of skin and body issues. Each head is non-invasive and easy to use, with adjustable intensity. Clinical studies have not only proved its efficacy for home use, but also show its incredible slimming potential. When tested on 16 women of diverse body types, five times a week for one month, 100% of them showed an overall average reduction in thigh circumference and 81.25% observed weight loss, proving Glo 910+ to be a non-invasive and effective alternative treatment for slimming and body contouring.

From Red Tape to Red Carpet Editorial Director Lauren Barisic Photographers Jaime Dillmore & Fabiola Ramirez

Adorning the entrance of Van Ness Avenue is a sign that declares Fresno to be “The Best Little City in the U.S.A.” Situated in the middle of California, Fresno is the Central Valley’s crown jewel for numerous reasons, which vary from proximity to affordability. Many have eagerly endeavored to leave their mark on the city over the years, regardless of the challenges that may have stood in the way. Now, the City of Fresno is pulling back the red tape, and rolling out the red carpet. Under the leadership of the newly elected mayor, Jerry Dyer, the greater Fresno area has much to look forward to in the coming years.

—31—

MAY | JUN

F

resno is getting a rebranding as much as its mayor is. To date, Jerry Dyer is perhaps best known for his police work. He served the city through the Fresno Police Department for four decades, culminating in being appointed the city’s longest-tenured police chief, which also makes him the longest-serving police chief of any major city in the United States. This post obviously gave him experience overseeing high numbers of employees and managing a multi-million-dollar budget. However, there’s a human-interest aspect of a different nature which comes with being a mayor. The networks that were in place for him as head of the police department for 18 years empowered him with the opportunity to meet a lot of people, many of whom now make up the infrastructure of his dream team, allowing him to hit the ground running. “And plus, knowing the history of Fresno helps me to know when I do make a decision what that potential impact might be on a particular group, or maybe a neighborhood, to understand the politics of City Hall, as well as county government, state government, that I’m familiar with,” Mayor Dyer rationalizes. He believes that all of this “has helped me to be much more thoughtful when I do make decisions, and then know who to contact, or work with, in order to get things done more quickly.” Mayor Dyer is going above and beyond to help Fresnans get back on their feet post-pandemic. From his perception, the most paramount struggles they are currently facing are uncertainty and increased poverty, both of which have affected small business owners most harshly. “We are moving towards a culture in our city, with employees, that clearly states we work for you, that we work for the businesses. We want to do everything we can, and we will do everything we can, to be able to expedite the opening of their business, for them to be resuscitated post-pandemic.” He aims to achieve this goal by advancing federal funding “through to those businesses in the form of business grants, so that they have the capital that they need in order to be able to stay in business,” says Mayor Dyer. “Unfortunately, we know that there’s 30 to 35 percent of our mom and pop restaurant owners who have gone out of business and may not return. It’s important that we resuscitate them, so I’ve tripled our Economic Development Department here in the city since I came, and we will be adding more people to that,” the mayor outlines. “Their duties are to reach out to small business owners in Fresno for the purpose of finding out what assistance they need and letting them know how they can get that assistance.” In late May, Mayor Dyer anticipates receiving substantial funding from the federal government through the American Rescue Plan, which “has a separate pool of money that’s going to be administered through the Small Business Administration to businesses, and it is for the purposes of resuscitation.” Mayor Dyer assures that the flexible terms under which businesses have been allowed to operate will continue post-pandemic. Take restaurants, for example, “where we’ve allowed for them to have outdoor dining on sidewalks, in parking lots. Wherever the case is, we’re going to continue to do that,” confirms Mayor Dyer. “Even after the pandemic, we’re going to maximize their ability to have outdoor dining. We’re going to be flexible with them in terms of how they operate their business and gravitate to ‘yes’ when they make requests.”

Outside the issue of the pandemic, an innate passion drives Mayor Dyer’s purpose with the City of Fresno. “The number one thing for me is always going to be (it’s in my DNA, I believe) safety— the safety of the people who live here. So whether I’m wearing a uniform or not wearing a uniform, I still feel personally responsible for the people to feel safe in this community. And I think that’s a primary function of a mayor,” he states. Another issue on the mayor’s plate is the homeless population. “I am extremely passionate about dealing with that issue.” In the first couple months of his term, Mayor Dyer spearheaded initiatives that relocated those living on the freeways; he provided some 225 people with roofs over their heads rather than simply displacing them into adjacent neighborhoods. “So that’s very gratifying, but we have a long way to go.” Major Dyer has moved forward with a sense of urgency regarding the cleaning up of freeways and enhancing the beauty of Fresno’s streets. “I am very disappointed in how Fresno has become over the years in terms of appearance. The fact that we’ve lost our curb appeal,” he admits, noting the importance of the ‘Beautify Fresno’ program, through which volunteers come together using city resources to bring back the city in terms of cleanliness. “That’s why we’re out on Saturdays, picking up trash, cleaning up the city.” The greater Fresno area continues to experience exponential growth. “There’s a lot that we have to offer here, in terms of being a desirable place to live.” Mayor Dyer believes affordable housing and land are the primary reasons people are attracted to Fresno. “We have proximity in our favor,” he references, noting how close mountains, national parks, and the Central Coast are. “We don’t have traffic congestion, like you see in many of the big cities.” The region also prides itself on its educational system—Clovis Unified ranks as one of the leading school districts in the country. “So all of those are very important to us,” making Fresno County, especially, stand apart from other cities in the Valley as an excellent place to establish or grow businesses and raise families. Yet with this growth comes a degree of urban sprawl that many cities in the Central Valley are experiencing. Driving along Blackstone Avenue, it’s easy to see how the shift to online shopping in recent years has impacted areas that have traditionally been retail destinations. Mayor Dyer understands the need for infill, and Blackstone Avenue is going to play a pivotal role in Fresno’s development as a major city. “I envision that we’ll see four to five-story townhouses all up and down Blackstone.” This plan incorporates the construction of mixed-use buildings (where the lower levels are retail with apartments above), much like how metropolitan areas function. This strip is already accessible via the city’s bus rapid transit. “Transit corridors are very, very important when you have that type of condensed housing that you’re putting on those areas,” he emphasizes. By utilizing preexisting structures, from bussing to buildings, many districts of the city will be seamlessly interconnected. Fresno offers the diversity of a major city without technically being a major city. Nonetheless, it has been on the brink of crossing that line for quite some time—public transit accessibility, from Northern Fresno to the downtown, will bring it one step closer to that inevitable evolution.

For now, but not for long, Fresno is still a “small town” with “big city” vibes, and the anchor for this mindset is firmly positioned in Downtown Fresno. Practically every mayor of Fresno has championed the revitalization of the city’s downtown, and the last few years have finally yielded results in the area. “The magnet for our downtown area is our baseball stadium,” Mayor Dyer says, referring to Chukchansi Park, which is being utilized for drawing in more permanent residents. “We’re getting ready to break ground in, probably, September on a multi-story apartment complex that’s going to overlook the stadium. We’re looking at another one that’s going to be adjacent to it, where we would actually have townhouses where you overlook the stadium there,” shares Mayor Dyer. “I really believe that great cities have great downtowns, and you can’t claim to be a great city until you have a great downtown,” the mayor states, recognizing that while Downtown Fresno is the best it has been in decades, it still falls short of its potential. “Part of it has to do with the fact that we have so many vacant buildings.” Mayor Dyer has already addressed this issue by setting a limit on how long buildings may remain unoccupied. There’s a need for more event and entertainment space, leading to developments with Selland Arena and Valdez Hall such as “moving forward with building a 7,500-seat stadium with suites,” designated for soccer and other outdoor activities. He also acknowledges that “we don’t have a sufficient number of people living downtown.” Right now, the majority of available housing offerings in the downtown area are rentals, rather than an investment for individual homeowners.

“Currently we have 3,000 people living downtown, and that number needs to grow to about 10,000 people before we’re really able to have a sustainable vibrant nightlife in Fresno.” Fresno is on the verge of becoming a major thoroughfare for the Golden State with world-class attractions. “We’re going to have the first high-speed rail station in the nation, in Downtown Fresno, and that’s going to happen over the next seven years.” Mayor Dyer is working on “Bringing in USA Wrestling, which is going to be a huge draw for Central California.” Southwest Airlines just landed at Fresno Yosemite International Airport. “There’s another development that we’re working on that I can’t talk about yet, but I hopefully can within the next six months, but I promise you, it will change the trajectory of Fresno and the image of Fresno forever,” the mayor teases. “I’ve always said, when people migrate to our country, that you assimilate as an American, but it’s important to hold on to your culture. And so, Fresno is rich in diversity, and I believe that’s what makes us so strong. I have found over the years, it’s our diversity that unites us as long as we recognize that we’re all part of Fresno— we’re one Fresno. And that has been my theme,” the mayor maintains. “You’re going to end up seeing a more prosperous, beautiful city in Fresno. You’re going to see a government that listens, keeps its promises, and a government that is owned by the people of Fresno.” Under Mayor Dyer’s guidance, Fresnans will feel welcomed at City Hall with concierge-type treatment. “We’re not here to roll out red tape, but red carpet.”

THE MATHER METHOD

I want you to love where you live.

LAURA MATHER, BROKER ASSOCIATE FRESNO, CALIFORNIA

T

he Mather Method takes the song and dance out of your home sale—whether you are selling or buying—and replaces it with something much more reliable: the art of marketing, versus just selling, and the science to back it up. My story could be much like your own. No entitlements, I have worked my way from entry-level property manager to a national Vice President of Sales and Marketing, to where I am now as one of Fresno’s top producers.

MY SPECIALTY My focus is always on my clients’ needs. I have a diverse client base with needs in every spectrum of the market. CAREER-DEFINING MOMENT There have been several career-defining moments at different stages in my career. The most memorable, by far, was during our company’s IPO (UCP Inc.), where we rang the opening bell at the NYSE on July 18th, 2013. Adding to the moment...being the only female at the podium. Now that I have transitioned from corporate America to being independent and self-employed, one of the greatest moments was being voted CVLUX Best Realtor in 2018 and 2021. WHAT SETS ME APART My vast real estate experience. I have a well-rounded understanding of the market and the industry as a whole. The Mather Method is the art and science to a successful home sale! I work very hard at delivering high-quality deliverables on a consistent basis. Each client’s goals are unique, and it’s my job to determine that and to find a solution to their needs. BEST ADVICE WHEN SELLING YOUR HOME Preparing your home for market is critical. Be proactive! Start with getting a pest inspection done (very affordable at approximately $80). The inspector is looking for wood rot, water intrusions, and pest issues, especially termites. If you have work to do from the findings, it’s best to know before hitting the market—the fewer hurdles you have during escrow, the better.

Known for my extraordinary level of customer service and relentless problem-solving abilities, my team and I will tailor your loan to best suit your long-term and short-term financing goals.

MY PASSION I love to help others! Whether they are purchasing their first home or adding to their investment portfolio, I assess each client’s financial goals and needs, then spend the time necessary to educate them on what is available and propose options and opportunities that will best suit their needs. WHAT I’M BEST KNOWN FOR Every client’s needs are unique. I pride myself on being responsive, reliable, and trusted by my clients. My realtors say, “If Toby can’t get it done, no one else will be able to either.” THE FUTURE OF MY FIELD Online lending is readily available, but is not reliable. It lacks the ability to have a trusted advisor guide you through the many challenges that arise during the escrow period. Without having a trusted advisor, how could a buyer ever have an exceptional customer service experience? WHAT SUCCESS MEANS TO ME I don’t measure success by how many loans I close. Interior Refresh

Dried Florals This design trend is a complete home run—you’ll never have to worry about replacing another beautiful flower arrangement. I often find myself splurging on beautiful fresh blooms only to discard them after a few days. Well-dried floral arrangements may be your answer. They’ve become so popular as of late. Their natural lines, muted shades, and longevity are the reasons why you will fall in love with these beauties. Some of my favorite dried varieties include: Italian ruscus, Lagurus ovatus (bunny tails), craspedia (Billy balls), and Banksia Protea. You can source individual stems or entire arrangements from your local florist or online at Etsy.

Metallic Accessories My mind goes straight to the track “Shiny” from the original motion picture Moana when I begin discussing this next design trend. I love a little shimmer here and there. Glitter, absolutely not! But little shiny metallics, yes please! Metallic accessories come in a variety of shades: rustic copper, antique gold, polished nickel, et cetera. They reflect light, so their colors are constantly changing. I like to mix different metallic tones, which allows me to achieve great depth and warmth throughout my spaces—don’t be afraid to try mingling whichever metals naturally speak to you.

Pattern

My obsession with pattern began at a very young age when my preschool teacher taught me to draw a zigzag. The way I saw the world was forever changed. Pattern can be a scary concept for many. “A pattern will be too busy in this small space.” “I’ll grow tired of it soon, so I’d rather just stick with something plain.” “I’ll just do a fun pattern on my throw pillows so it isn’t overwhelming.” All of these are excuses to which I say, “Let’s take the leap together.” Done right, pattern can transform your space into a truly remarkable experience. Take risks, have fun, and breathe…ahhh. It’ll be worth it!

Sculptural Accents In a world of form versus function, this design trend screams the former. Whether you’re into abstract elements or literal figures, sculptures pack the visual punch! It’s a single element that has the power to stand on its own, so let it. Go bold with something that can be styled confidently on its own or start small with a design that can easily be integrated into a well-composed collection of beautiful belongings. Choose sculptures that are interesting to YOU. I like figures that are both masculine and feminine, beautiful yet odd, modern with a hint of nostalgia.

Stair Runners If you feel like your home is falling flat, or are simply in the mood for a refresh, adding a stair runner (or switching out an existing one) may be just the remedy. This is a quick and affordable way to add major wow to your home. Don’t feel like you are making a ‘til-death-do-youpart commitment—runners can be easily changed. Another wonderful quality of this design trend is that stair runners provide only minimal coverage. Whether you pick a runner with a graphic pattern or one with a bold hue, rest assured, your selection will be a conversation starter and not a complete falter.

fter nearly a decade on The Real Housewives of Atlanta (RHOA), Kenya Moore is still a peach to watch. The entrepreneur beauty queen has openly lived her life on-screen, allowing viewers to follow her life journey through all its ups and downs, which, in turn, fosters a relatability not often found in celebrity. Though Kenya’s reality doubles as reality television, there is so much more to this boss babe momma. Originally from Detroit, Kenya has been forthright about struggles concerning her mother’s abandonment in infancy. Kenya’s grandmother Doris brought her up and remained a highly influential part of Kenya’s life even after her death a few years ago—Kenya’s baby daughter is actually named Brooklyn Doris to honor her great grandmother. Doris was crucial in nurturing her granddaughter’s aspirations. “My grandmother Doris was very strict, but she allowed me to follow my dreams,” Kenya reflects, thinking of a particular opportunity that changed the trajectory of her life. “A few of my friends entered a talent pageant called ‘Little Miss Black Star.’ I was 13 or 14 and was excited to do something that was fun.” Because Kenya had been dancing since she was five, “I danced for my talent portion. I placed 1st Runner-Up. It was a very positive and exciting experience and that was just the beginning. I never looked back after that.” The pageant scene throughout her childhood eventually led to Kenya being crowned Miss USA in 1993 when she was just 22. Later that year, she placed 4th in the Miss Universe annual international beauty pageant. Though she became well-known for her Miss USA title, Kenya has also acted and produced alongside many A-list celebrities throughout her career and is known for her roles in I Know Who Killed Me, The Confidant, and Dolls of Voodoo. The values that stemmed from her grandmother’s “very old school” approach in her formative early years never left Kenya. “She loved little girls to be well-dressed, well-behaved, and well-spoken. She was the perfect role model. She also loved healthy hair,” Kenya fondly remembers. “She always said, ‘hair is your crowning glory’ and that wasn’t lost on me. She took such pride in dressing my aunt Lisa, her only daughter that I grew up with, and me. I believe my passion was born there. She hated wigs and wanted us to take pride in our own natural hair.” Thus, Kenya was extremely passionate about haircare from an early age, and from this passion stemmed Kenya Moore Haircare. “My signature line is about empowering women to love the hair that’s naturally growing from their heads.” The collection includes “shampoo, conditioner, a reparative mask, strengthening serum, and Moore edges and supplements. They all work together, and our customers say their hair is thriving and growing as a result of using Kenya Moore Haircare.”

One aspect that distinguishes Kenya’s line from others is her belief that hair health starts from the root. “Healthy hair was my focus and the by-product of that is length retention, otherwise referred to as ‘growth,’” Kenya explains. “If your hair is healthy, it will show the growth.” All the products offered in the line are designed to help hair grow strong, long, and luscious. Creating products that help women feel more beautiful and expanding her hair empire fulfills Kenya’s spirit. “I am a creative person, so I need outlets to express myself and my passions. I am fulfilled because I am following my passion and living my dream,” says Kenya. “Prior to being on TV, I always dreamed of having my own line. Now that I do, my passion is driving me to be the number 1 brand in the world in this category. I love helping people feel good about their hair, so I won’t stop until I’m number 1.” Someday, her daughter Brooklyn will be heir to that throne. Even now, baby Brooklyn has a special haircare routine. “Brooklyn has very fine, thick, and curly hair. Yes, all three. I didn’t know that was possible!” Kenya exclaims. “I wash it every three days or so, condition, and use my leave-in conditioner that will be out soon.” In fact, Brooklyn “is the new face of Kenya Moore Haircare, and embodies everything that I want my brand to stand for.” Welcoming Brooklyn has brought Kenya more joy than she ever dreamed was possible. “I want her to have unconditional love that I never had from my own mother. To give life to her, protect her, allow her to flourish, and to thrive is the most rewarding aspect of being a mother. She is my entire world,” gushes Kenya. “I didn’t know I could be so patient, so captivated, and so in love.” Owing to Kenya’s fertility challenges, she holds the Baby Quest Foundation close to her heart. “It’s an existing charity that I am an ambassador for that truly spoke to my heart as our values align. I wanted to give back to those that wanted to have a child but are suffering through infertility the way I did.” The Foundation bridges the gap on the cost of assisted reproduction. “Baby Quest created a grant for me to give back and pay it forward,” Kenya says, referencing the Kenya Moore Giving Hope Grant. “Money should never be an obstacle for having children.”

S

ince welcoming Brooklyn in 2018, Kenya has relished her baby girl’s growth at every stage, all the while managing an extremely full career plate. Right now, Kenya is savoring “How smart she is, and her memory is unbelievable. We actually have conversations where she speaks to me like she is really expressing her thoughts. It’s the most precious thing.” Moreover, “COVID,” she adds, “slowed things down for me and made me focus on what is most important. I balance because I have to.” In addition to Brooklyn and her professional pursuits, Kenya’s home, dubbed Moore Manor, is another source of great joy. The “modern, sleek, and sexy” house features clean lines with minimal, contemporary interior design in a white and grey palette. “I hate clutter,” she says, regarding her aesthetic. “I love open bright windows and simple yet sleek décor.” Even Brooklyn’s room marries crisp whites with pops of bright pink for a fresh girly look. “Her modern Barbie nursery is the envy of all the little girls!” One of Kenya’s favorite rooms in Moore Manor is the one dedicated to glamor—her home styling set-up. “I have my own glam room downstairs. I love it. I always hated doing hair in a kitchen,” she admits. “The walls are custom glass [with a] gorgeous chandelier, and all my hair products are in their own closet. It’s über glam.” After separating from her husband Marc Daly, Kenya decided to give Moore Manor a refresh by finally adding the pool and cabana she’s always wanted. Completed in a mere nine months, “I also added some safety elements, too. I love swimming and so does Brooklyn. It’s heated and has a saltwater system. I can’t wait for the landscaping and retaining walls to be complete!” The evolution of Moore Manor is still underway. “I think I will add a pool house. We sit on an acre of land, so we have plenty of room.”

M

oore Manor is the essence of home not because of its pristine composition but because of the sanctuary she has created for herself and her daughter there—this ideal is evident in all aspects of Kenya’s life. Through RHOA, Kenya enjoys “being able to promote what makes me happy and getting behind great causes. It was especially meaningful to me when I produced my PSA for domestic violence. Even though it was incredibly difficult, I received so many letters and emails saying how much it helped people. They were so appreciative of my efforts and it allowed many to escape abusive relationships. Being a survivor allowed me to help other women survive. By bearing my soul, it encouraged others to and inevitably save[d] lives.” Kenya is relentless in her pursuit of happiness alongside career ambitions and is laserfocused on having it all, but on her own terms—this is a tricky path for a lot of people, yet she manages to make it seem easy. “My idea was always to have an amazing family unit, unconditional love, a thriving and fulfilling career, and to be financially secure. I can honestly say I have the happiness I have searched for, and I did it my way. There is and will always be a learning curve and bumps and bruises along the way in life, but those battle scars are a roadmap to all I have accomplished. I still want more; I’m not done yet!” According to Kenya, “In life and love and business… women can have it all. It is a matter of believing just that,” she trusts. “I never doubted that I could win Miss USA. I never doubted that I could be a successful actress. I never doubted that I could find love. I never doubted that I could follow my passions and become a founder and owner of a haircare line. It may not always be when you want or expect, but your blessings will always be right on time. I hope my strength and irreverence, of which I make no apologies for, can also serve as a template on how [women] can have success. All women can achieve their dreams. I followed my passion. I was unafraid. I was fearless and I am here. Still standing.” By believing in herself, Kenya Moore is doing more than just talking the talk—she is an inspiration for women everywhere.

est Coast natives, from the Central Valley to the Central Coast, are all, to some degree, produce snobs. Now, don’t get defensive! Having high crop standards isn’t a bad thing. Agriculture is big in the state of California—the Salinas Valley is even called the “Salad Bowl of the World” in reference to the fun fact that 70% of our nation’s lettuce is grown there. Californians, especially, get to experience the bounty of each season with a cyclical abundance of fruits and vegetables. So, what better way to showcase the produce yielded by the turning calendar than by making one of the most universally diverse dishes known to humankind? Behold, the humble salad! The variations that salads offer are truly infinite. Eat the season—challenge yourself to experience all that the Golden State’s spring has to offer by curating your own leafy medleys using what’s available at your local market or roadside fruit stand. Remember, there is no wrong recipe for a salad—you can’t mess it up! Start with what’s in season, pick a leaf or two or more, make sure there’s some crunch, add a protein if you prefer, and MerriamWebster highly encourages the presence of a dressing. The following is an assortment of three seasonally inspired salads to get your creative juices flowing for the warm weather kick-off.

Wedge-Style Salad SERVES 2

2 heads of romaine lettuce 3 hard-boiled eggs 1 lb. bacon 1 handful of cherry tomatoes ½ a red onion Red wine vinegar

Instructions Begin by preparing the salad toppings. Thinly slice the red onion before pickling it in red wine vinegar (preferably overnight but, if in a hurry, half an hour will suffice). Hard boil and ice the eggs before slicing them in half. Reduce the balsamic vinegar to a glaze (if needed). Cut the bacon into half-inch-wide bits and fry them to a crisp; set the bacon aside to strain on paper towels. Wash the cherry tomatoes, then cut them in half. Prepare the lettuce by washing the romaine while keeping the lettuce heads intact. Pull off the outer leaves to expose the romaine hearts. Slice the exposed ends of the bases away, allowing the leaves to still remain attached to the base of the head. Now, gently unfold each head so that the hearts are exposed.

Blue cheese crumbles Balsamic vinegar (a high-quality option with syrupy consistency is preferable, but a reduction or glaze will also work beautifully)

Assemble the Wedge-Style Salad Place the romaine hearts on their own plates with the exposed side up. Nestle 3 hard-boiled egg halves against each romaine heart. Sprinkle the bacon, pickled red onion, and cherry tomatoes atop the romaine hearts. Drizzle the balsamic vinegar over the salad before finishing it off with the blue cheese crumbles.

Mediterranean Salmon Salad SERVES 2

1 bag of herb mix lettuce 2 Persian cucumbers ½ cup garbanzo beans (canned) 16 Kalamata olives (pitted) 1 red bell pepper Feta cheese crumbles

For the lemon vinaigrette Avocado or olive oil 1 lemon (juiced) 2 garlic cloves (minced) Garlic salt Black pepper

Instructions Begin by preparing the salmon fillets. Add oil to a sauté pan and heat it on medium (avocado oil is preferable because it has a higher burning point, which is an added bonus when working with an oily fish like salmon). Season the fish with garlic salt and black pepper, then drizzle the lemon juice on top. Cook the prepared salmon to your desired wellness. Prepare the lemon vinaigrette by adding the minced garlic cloves and lemon juice to a mixing bowl, then season it with garlic salt and black pepper before mixing. After that, let it sit and marinade itself while you prepare the salad toppings. To prepare the salad toppings, first wash the Persian cucumbers and red bell pepper. Thinly slice the Persian cucumbers and julienne the red bell pepper to bite-sized pieces. Strain and rinse the garbanzo beans and drain the Kalamata olives.

For the salmon 2 salmon fillets Avocado or olive oil 1 lemon (juiced) Garlic salt Black pepper

After the salad toppings are prepared, turn back to the vinaigrette and whisk in an equal part of avocado oil or olive oil (avocado oil will have a lighter palate, while olive oil tends to be heavier, so use whichever you prefer). Assemble the Mediterranean Salmon Salad In a large mixing bowl, add the herb mix lettuce followed by the prepared salad toppings and feta cheese crumbles before tossing with the lemon vinaigrette (reserve a bit of the lemon vinaigrette). Plate the tossed salad on two plates, top each with a salmon fillet, and pour the remaining lemon vinaigrette over the fish.

Central Valley Spring Salad SERVES 2 1 bag of spring mix lettuce 2 cooked chicken breasts 1 avocado 1 handful of blueberries 1 handful of pre-sliced almonds Goat cheese crumbles

For the strawberry vinaigrette 2 to 4 strawberries Italian salad dressing

Instructions Begin by preparing the strawberry vinaigrette. You’ll want an approximately equal ratio of strawberries to Italian dressing. Wash and destem the strawberries before cutting them in half. Using a food processor, emulsify the strawberries with the Italian dressing until the mixture becomes smooth. If the dressing is too thick for your liking, add more Italian dressing to thin it. Prepare the salad toppings. Slice the cooked chicken breasts into strips. Cut the avocado into cubes. Rinse and dry the blueberries. Assemble the Central Valley Spring Salad In a large mixing bowl, add the spring mix lettuce followed by the avocado, blueberries, pre-sliced almonds, and goat cheese crumbles. Then, toss it with the strawberry vinaigrette. Plate the tossed salad on two plates before topping each with a sliced chicken breast.

Houseplant

HAPPINESS Editorial Director Lauren Barisic Photographer David J. Orozco

etween the broad range of those who are capable of maintaining indoor jungles versus those who can barely keep track of pet rocks, one thing is certain: how to bring the outdoors in is a widespread and ancient subject of intrigue. Houseplants are beneficial for a myriad of reasons. Not only do they add aesthetic appeal to home décor, they improve indoor air quality and do wonders for mental health. Just like house pets, some plants just do better with indoor life. But what exactly defines a houseplant? According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, “any plant adapted for growing indoors. The most common are exotic plants native to warm, frost-free parts of the world that can be grown indoors in colder climates in portable containers or miniature gardens. Most houseplants are, therefore, derived from plants native to the tropics and near tropics. Those that make the best indoor subjects are the species that adjust comfortably to the rather warm, dry conditions that generally prevail in indoor living spaces.” Houseplants fall under one of two categories: 1) foliage plants, some of which only occasionally bloom, prized for their lush leaves, and 2) flowering plants, which, as the name suggests, are kept primarily for their blooms. As such, thousands of tropical and subtropical plants have adapted to growing indoors. Though some exotic species only thrive in well-controlled environments (such as humid conservatories or glass-enclosed terrariums), innumerable varieties have been introduced that are extremely tolerant of the adverse conditions often found in modern homes, such as dry heat and low light intensity. In addition, ancient paintings and sculptures depict indoor gardening by the early Greeks and Romans, “who grew plants in pots and perhaps brought them into their homes,” Britannica goes on. “The older civilizations of Egypt, India, and China also made

use of pot[ted] plants but usually in outdoor situations, often in courtyards that were extensions of the house; and for centuries the Japanese have carried on the dwarfing of trees and other plants for room ornaments,” further contextualizing the fluidity of indoor-outdoor lifestyles since early human history. But it wasn’t until the publication of The Garden of Eden in 1652 by Sir Hugh Platt (an English agricultural authority) that discussion on the possibility of cultivating plants inside was formally explored, leading to the popular art of growing houseplants. According to Britannica, “shortly thereafter, glasshouses and conservatories, which had been used during Roman times to force plants to flower, were built in England and elsewhere to house exotic plants. In mid19th-century England and France, books began to appear on the growing of plants in private residences, and the use of enclosed glass cases of plants (the wardian cases, or terraria) became popular.” Some might say getting a plant for your first place is like a rite of passage into adulthood. Many consider plant babies to be the ultimate introductory practice run when it comes to taking care of a dependent life—however, unlike fur babies (or human babies, for that matter), they cannot make indicating noises and intelligent motions to convey their needs, likes, and dislikes. So, how can you know what your plant babies require? Yasmeen Gonzalez is a professional plant parent on a mission to help educate individuals on plant knowledge, grow the plant community through encouragement, and promote creativity through plant designs. As the owner of Foliage, the Houseplant Shop & Plant Design Studio located in Clovis, California, her collection of “specialty houseplants make it easy to create your Foliage jungle so you can be a thriving plant parent,” too.

“The houseplant addiction is real,” professes Yasmeen. “Since everyone has been home these past months, it has been more prevalent to want to bring joy and beauty into our homes. It really starts with just one plant—the joy and reward of keeping one alive sparks the houseplant parent frenzy.” Yet even the most enthusiastic plant parents have mishaps. As humans, “we can bond over how we love plants, how we love being around them, and how we kill them!”

A

firm grasp of what you can provide, in terms of attention and environment, is key to growing success and helps to narrow down houseplant options. The first consideration is expertise level—the difference between having houseplants already or being a new houseplant parent. Moreover, knowing what kind of lighting is available is also essential. Lastly, be sure to account for toxicity concerns for pets, as well as general size preferences. Whether you are a novice or established houseplant parent helps to determine what care level to take on: easy, intermediate, or humidity loving. Easy plants are drought and typically low light tolerant, making them extremely low maintenance and ideal for newbies. Intermediate plants prefer weekly watering and are partial to bright, indirect light, which are “perfect for someone who is a little more experienced and wanting to add to their collection,” Yasmeen explains. Lastly, humidity loving plants are the most delicate, as they prefer high humidity and consistently moist soil. “Their high maintenance characteristics are what makes them hard,” she clarifies, “but really anyone can manage these plants as long as you can water and tend to them at least two times a week. At any point, anyone can graduate to the next level—it just takes a good watering schedule and depends on how much time you have to attend to your plants.”

P

lants make their way into your home in a few different vessels—they may be either fully potted, cache potted, or still in their plastic grower pot. Fully potted is a planter with a drainage hole and saucer: “this plant is ready to go, and you can start watering because it has proper drainage and a saucer to catch the excess water,” says Yasmeen. A cache pot is a decorative pot without a drainage hole: “so, cache potting is when we keep the plant in its plastic grower pot and place it inside a decorative one.” When it comes time to water a cache potted plant, “you take the grower pot to a sink, water it, let it drain, then set it back in its cache pot.” The soil used for planting at nurseries is extremely nutrient-rich. For this reason, “I recommend waiting to start fertilizing or giving your plant food once you’ve had it in the same pot/soil for more than six months.” After approximately half a year’s time, those nutrients will have been both absorbed by the plant and drained out with watering. “So, at this point, you can either repot the plant with new soil if it is root-bound or you can begin to fertilize.” Repotting is easy. Yasmeen suggests, “just gently loosen the roots at the bottom and place a couple scoops of soil in the new planter. This new planter should only be two inches larger in diameter than the current pot. Next, set the plant inside the new planter, then top it with soil and compress around the edges to secure the plant inside.” But knowing when it’s time to graduate to a bigger pot isn’t an exact science. “You just need to wait until the plant shows you it’s ready to be repotted,” she offers. “You’ll know when you see roots growing out the bottom drainage holes, and when you pull the plant out, you’ll notice it’s root-bound, meaning the roots have grown to be tightly coiled around the bottom of the soil.” Furthermore, improper fertilization, watering, and placement can all lead to various plant problems, most commonly resulting in root rot. “It all starts with improper drainage—this will cause the soil to be sopping wet, and wet soil will produce gnats. So, the best thing you can do is set your plant up for success with a proper pot size and one that has drainage holes. Ideally, you want your plant in a pot that is roughly the same size as the root ball. Anything too large will cause damage to your plant from overwatering because of the excess soil.” Proper lighting is also essential. Low light plants require the same amount you’d need to read by. But when it comes to direct versus

bright light, many are confused by the difference. “Direct light is just that: direct rays of sunlight coming through a window— this can be harsh, damaging light if it gets too hot over summer. Bright, indirect light is just bright ambient light—like sunlight that brightens a room but doesn’t shine directly through the window.” Happy houseplants will eventually require graduation to larger pots or pruning, which opens the door for a fun new challenge: propagation. “Each plant has its own way that it can be propagated. There are methods like a simple stem cutting to plant separation or root division.” Do some research on the most successful way to propagate your specific plant variety, “but, also, don’t be afraid to experiment!” encourages Yasmeen. “I’ve had broken pieces of plants that I throw into water just ‘to see’ and become pleasantly surprised to see them root fairly quickly.” Water propagation is an excellent rooting technique. “I recommend growing cuttings in water versus soil because you can visually see the roots growing and know when it is time to transplant to soil,” advises Yasmeen. For a stem cutting, “start at the tip of the stem/ branch, find a root node (a brown bump on the back side of the stem), then cut one inch below. Take that cutting and place it in water so that the root node is submerged. The key is to replace the water two to three times a week to keep the water fresh and to prevent the cutting from molding.” Finding the perfect plant is personal, but no matter where you are in your houseplant journey, there are a handful of varieties that are just universally appealing. “Our most popular plants are the classic, hardy plants, like snake plant and pothos. I love recommending these because they instantly create a warm, welcoming space without the hassle of constant attention.” Relationships with and access to nature are essential components of wellness for many—aside from the visual intrigue and cultivation gratification, houseplants are scientifically rooted in well-being. “The most important way that plants enhance our wellness is in our symbiotic relationship with oxygen,” imparts Yasmeen. “Plants are our natural air purifiers because they absorb toxins as they take in our carbon dioxide and in turn give us fresh, clean oxygen to breathe. This, along with their elements of beauty and design, just naturally bring joy to a household—and who wouldn’t want to have a little piece of paradise in their home?” Make your residence a mini oasis, then, physically and emotionally, let the growing begin!
