LETTER from the

I

EDITOR

n this special Bridal Edition of CVLUX, we celebrate one of life’s most significant milestones: weddings. Within these pages, we address all your bridal questions, from fashion to etiquette, to help make your life on your big day a bit easier.

My personal favorite article in this issue is entitled A Match Made in Texas. We were fortunate enough to get a glimpse inside the magnificent wedding of Caroline Baliker and John Bonadelle. Dallas was the destination for this simply stunning event, where every detail was meticulously thought out. It is a beautiful example of elegance mixed with tradition and character. If you are looking for inspiration for your big day, you need not look any further. Registering tends to be an overwhelming task for many brides, but Social Graces answers all your bridal registry questions. Everything you need to know concerning timing, what to select, and how to curate the gifting process is covered, including tips on protocol and good manners. You will know exactly what you’re getting yourself into and any apprehension you may have in addressing registry queries will dissipate after reading this article. When selecting this month’s cover feature, I was instantly drawn to the funny, charming, and charismatic Kristin Cavallari—she’s basically a superhuman. Needless to say, we are all crazy about Kristin. Features Editor Andrea Towers interviewed Cavallari a little over a month ago. They chatted about her career, family, and all her business ventures. Celebrity photographer Jim Jordan captured this beauty at a fabulous estate in Calabasas, California. You can read all about Kristin and see her stunning images on full display in the Summer Love article inside this edition. Here’s to celebrating life’s most momentous occasions in luxurious style, and may you have the happily ever after you have always dreamed of. Cheers,

David

W

e met Kathy at one of her favorite new local hot spots, Tamari Robatayaki & Whisky Bar, in northwest Fresno. I always say you can tell a lot about a person by what they order— Kathy personifies this. She ordered a myriad of menu items, and I quickly discovered that, much like her appetite, Kathy wants to have a little bit of everything life has to offer! She also wants her guests and friends to experience that as well; constantly sharing with others is one of her best traits. It’s this love of life, family, and friends that drives this multi-talented, fabulous lady. A Fresno-grown native, Kathy graduated from Clovis West High School. After high school, she intended to graduate from California State University (CSU) Fresno with a degree in interior design. (If you haven’t seen her house, you should try to get an invitation as quickly as possible! Her love of design is echoed in each room, with a strong Spanish hacienda aesthetic.) While studying design, tragedy unexpectedly hit in December of 1992, when her husband of three months died suddenly of a fatal heart arrhythmia. Kathy had the unfortunate experience of becoming a widow at the age of 21. She decided to continue her education in interior design, and redirected her financial focus. After high school and during her early college years, Kathy worked as a manicurist to support herself and her college ambitions. In the early 90s, Kathy got her real estate license. It was then her life began to change; she saw an opportunity and potential.

—26— MAY | JUN

Kathy wanted to not only help her clients sell their homes; she also wanted to offer her clients the best customer experience. At the time, Realty World offered a program (Real Loan) in which she, as a licensed real estate agent, could also work as a loan officer. The ability to offer both to her clients resulted in yet another opportunity to grow her business. This allowed her to provide a higher level of service to her clients, over and above what they could receive otherwise. This was empowering and a value that set Kathy apart from the competition. Kathy moved down to Southern California in 2000, working for Coldwell Banker Beverly Hills North. Kathy worked on the greater Westside of Los Angeles, Malibu Hills, and Santa Monica, laying the foundation for a phenomenal career. Shortly after her relocation, an opportunity to work for Countrywide presented itself (at the time, the nation’s largest mortgage lender). Kathy went to work as an Account Executive, becoming the middleman between the mortgage banker/broker and the lender. In a short time, she grew her territory to the #1 territory in the country. At the time she took over the territory in 2002, it was producing just under $200 million per year. With her drive and dedication, Kathy grew this to nearly $2 billion per year, making her mark as the top producing Account Executive at Countrywide, setting the record for the highest volume producer in the country and holding her #1 spot year over year. Shortly after moving to Southern California, Kathy went to Las Vegas for a weekend girls’ trip (New Year’s celebration). There, in 2001, she met the love of her life, Phil Stypula, who was originally from San Jose, however, had lived in Fresno and graduated from CSU Fresno. They immediately began dating upon their return from Las Vegas, and got married shortly thereafter in August of 2002. Word to the wise—what happens in Vegas sometimes doesn’t necessarily stay there. The couple has two beautiful daughters, Makena and Gianna, both born in Santa Monica. Even though Kathy and Phil loved Southern California, they knew they didn’t want to raise their family there, so they felt compelled to move back to the Central Valley, since they both had roots in Fresno. When the decision was made to make a move, the market began to change. With the implosion of the mortgage industry, Bank of America buying Countrywide, industry demise, and new regulations, Kathy saw yet another opportunity to re-invent herself. Making the decision to leave Bank of America (formerly Countrywide), Kathy left wholesale lending, and went back to working in the consumer direct space. During this rebuild, Kathy took the opportunity to finish her education. After she got her mortgage loan originator license in 2010, she joined Team Meeker and began rebuilding. Given the uncertainty of the mortgage industry, Kathy attended University of Phoenix, where she completed her degree in business management in just 2 years, graduating in 2013. During this time, Kathy continued to grow her business and repositioned herself in the top 1% of loan originators in the United States by 2013; she has held her spot year over year since. Today, Kathy works at Bay Equity Home Loans, a national direct lender, where she continues to help families fulfill their dream of homeownership and maintain financial fitness. It goes without saying that Kathy is extremely passionate and exceptionally enthusiastic about living life. Losing someone dear at a very young age impressed upon her the importance of living every moment to the absolute fullest. She strives to bring that passion to her role as a professional, her role as a wife, and, most importantly, her role as a mother.

Kathy’s alarm goes off at 4 o’clock every morning, though she usually wakes up at least an hour before that! She takes her Chihuahua (Hugo) outside, turns the radio on, listens to The Message station, and has her coffee, then heads off to The Bar Method or Cycle Bar for a workout as early as 5:30 am. She grabs a handful of pecans, comes home to wake the kids up, takes them to school, and then goes to her office. Depending on when the girls are done with school, she will pick them up between 3:30 and 5:30. Knowing the importance of a healthy diet and bonding as a family, Kathy cooks a homemade (vegetarian) meal daily. Making time to talk about the day with her daughters, the importance of nutritious meals, and cuddling with her babies every night is what makes her tick. Kathy truly enjoys cooking and entertaining for friends and family, and loves great champagne, but her favorite, however, is tequila…on the rocks! Needless to say, this woman never stops, and serves as an inspiration to everyone she meets. I am so happy to call her a friend

SHAKE +STIR HOSTED AT THE STANDARD Managing Editor Lauren Barisic Photographer Don Dizon Florals Simply Flowers

T

he Standard’s front patio was the perfect setting to hold Shake+Stir’s sixth edition, hosted by CVLUX’s Donna Kaczmarski. The group of Fresno ladies included Realty Concepts’ Cherry Englert, Marlene Fugman, Laurie Salvano, Deanna Spellman, as well as Dr. Hediah Arbabzadeh, and Dr. Amber Mahal, who had the pleasure of sampling three cocktails and five appetizers alfresco as a Q&A on plastic surgery (Hediah’s profession) quickly ensued. The Standard Restaurant and Lounge, located in northern Fresno’s RiverView Shopping Center at Friant and Fort Washington, offers an American-style dinner menu, craft cocktails, and upscale nightlife in a swanky lounge setting. Patrons can opt to sit both inside and out. The bar itself is centrally located between the lounge (complete with booth seating and a fireplace) and the dining room indoors. Choose between either the front patio or the cabanas for outdoor seating. A springy floral arrangement, made of yellow tulips, punch pink roses, baby blue delphinium, lavender statice, pink bachelor buttons, and delicate ferns, was fixed in a wide-mouthed, low glass vase, created by Simply Flowers’ Mariah Walton, and adorned the coffee table set amid an outdoor lounge sectional.

—36— MAY | JUN

Though The Standard is known for their drinks, their small bites and appetizers are absolutely something to look forward to as well. Bear in mind, each cocktail is made by hand, from scratch, to order. “That’s why so often the drinks take longer than the food to prepare,” our waiter explained as the ladies received their first beverage. The first cocktail, called a Raspberry Smash, was a concoction of Slane Irish Whiskey, fresh mint, housemade sweet & sour, and freshly crushed raspberries. You can’t even taste the whiskey… “A nice summer drink; very fresh,” offered Deanna. Marlene argued that, “It’s healthy!” I mean, raspberries and mint really should be on our daily intake lists, anyway. These were gone by the time the first appetizer came out shortly thereafter. Trust, you’ve never had calamari like The Standard’s Crispy Calamarie before! Long strips of the cephalopod are fried, then sautéed with jalapeños and slices of white onion, and served with spicy cocktail sauce. “Oh, this is interesting,” Hediah observed with enjoyment. Fork and knife are required for this one. Speaking of oceanic creatures lead Donna to ask the gals about favorite vacations, which surprisingly revealed that this is a rather adventurous group. Between skydiving, parasailing, bungee jumping, zip lining, snorkeling, backpacking, mountain climbing, and motorcycle riding, these women have cumulatively done everything, and have been all over the world in the process. How Laurie managed to maintain her perfectly wild curls under a helmet during a cross-country Harley-Davidson trip was beyond everyone’s comprehension… “The trick is to not use product! Otherwise the sweat from your head reactivates it and makes your hair flat when you take off the helmet.” We have been enlightened! Hands-down, the Southwest Egg Rolls were the favorite nibbler of the evening. Filled with avocado, corn, black beans, pico de gallo, and cilantro, they are cut on the bias and accompanied by an ancho-chipotle sauce. “These are fantastic; a great small bite,” mused Cherry of the fried goodness. As stunning as it was delicious, the CocoMelon cocktail struck the ladies with its dual-coloring and sugared rim. Watermelon liqueur rests on the bottom, while a blend of coconut rum, pineapple juice, and house-made sweet & sour float on top. “It’s neat that you can enjoy it as-is, or stir it up for an entirely different flavor profile,” offered Marlene in reference to blending the mixers. A close second favorite were the Asian Lettuce Wraps, though they are a bit of a trick to eat. “I don’t care—they are totally worth it,” professed Laurie. Butter lettuce cups are filled with grilled marinated chicken breast, water chestnuts, shredded carrots, cilantro, green onions, and puffed rice noodles, with a Thai peanut sauce drizzle. Looking for a new place to celebrate Taco Tuesday? Hit up The Standard; their Mini Grilled Tacos are on promo for a mere $1 apiece. Soft corn tortillas hold a mixture of grilled chicken and bacon, and are then topped with

lettuce, cilantro, and pico de gallo. “I’ll definitely take another one of those!” Amber declared with enthusiasm. The shredded marinated chicken manages to retain enough spicy juice to satisfy your heat craving. Similar in styling to the Raspberry Smash, the Strawberry Basil Lemonade is deceptive because it tastes simply like a more refined version of the quintessential summertime thirst-quencher. “So refreshing; that’s dangerous!” laughed Deanna. Citrus Vodka and house-made sweet & sour are muddled with fresh strawberries and basil; the protruding basil leaf and lemon slice garnish is a festive touch. Last out was the Tempura Shrimp with Sweet & Spicy Sauce, which was yet another hit with the girls. The sauce is what makes these crispy shrimp skewers special; it’s got a kick, but it is also served steaming-hot. “I like that the tempura is moist, yet crisp,” Amber said, and everyone agreed. Rein in your enthusiasm and let them cool off a smidgen, or you’ll burn your mouth…like we did. By the end of the evening, the Realty Concepts ladies had convinced CVLUX’s Editor in Chief, David Manning, to come with them on their next trip to San Francisco—not that he required much persuasion. “I put the ‘fun’ in functional!” he declared with an accompanied laugh. The girls had all their plastic surgery questions answered, and Cherry was so taken with the floral arrangement that she took it home with her. All in all, it was a lovely evening spent with lovelier people, made even better by great appetizers and drinks.

Mother. Actress. Writer. Designer. Entrepreneur. Yes, reality television alum Kristin Cavallari is doing it all, but don’t let her superhuman resume fool you—she’s definitely one of us. “I have moments, like last night, where I don’t think I can do it,” Cavallari admits at the beginning of our phone conversation. “But then, like today, I pick myself back up and power on and just get it done.”

I

n preparation for our phone interview, I spent some time looking over everything Cavallari has done in the past few years, which turned out to be everything from competing on Dancing with the Stars, to guest starring in television shows and small films, to charity work involving PETA and HIV/AIDS. When I bring up her go-getter personality, though, she’s quick to point out that it’s not a one-woman show. “The fact that Jay is home all day, every day right now … he’s the reason I’m able to do half of what I do,” she says, referencing her husband of two years, Miami Dolphins quarterback, Jay Cutler. Make no mistake—the hard-working mom of three loves her work, but her real passion is her family. “Five o’clock comes and every night we’re eating dinner as a family—that’s the most important thing to me,” she says. “It’s important for me to wake up in the morning and make the boys’ breakfast, pack their lunches … I make sure that certain family things are a priority. Everything else is secondary.” Looking back on Cavallari’s life, this state of mind isn’t surprising. While most of America still recognizes her as the perky teenager from the MTV reality show Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County, and later The Hills, Cavallari wasn’t born into a life of glamor and glitz. “I lived in a suburb of Chicago throughout my entire junior high years and my mom lived here,” explains Cavallari, who settled in both Los Angeles and Chicago before finding a home in Nashville with Cutler. “Moving back to Chicago wasn’t a shock for me because I had experienced it before. But I do think, because of living in L.A. and Southern California for so long, it was still an adjustment.” What kind of adjustment? “I remember I had no clothes!” Cavallari laughs. “No winter jackets … I had to buy this stuff. But to be honest, I prefer having my kids grow up in a place that has four seasons. Snow days for me were part of my childhood, and I love that my kids are experiencing that. It’s just a different way of growing up.” At the very least, it’s different from how Cavallari grew up. After moving to California to attend Laguna Beach High School, fame came calling in 2004. She would spend three years of her life being documented alongside the lives of her friends, and then another six as part of a spin-off series from Laguna Beach castmate Lauren Conrad— but don’t expect someone who grew up in the spotlight to share that same glimpse behind the curtain. “It’s funny, because yeah, I was on reality TV, but I’m actually a very private person when it comes to my family,” Cavallari says. “But I do realize that’s what people really resonate with and that’s what they connect to, so I try to find a happy medium and a happy balance.” Still, there’s a line, and that line isn’t a surprise. “People ask me all the time why I don’t show my kids’ faces, but they didn’t sign up for this world,” says Cavallari. “I did. And I want them to choose if that’s a life and world that they want to be in. I don’t want to rob them of that decision.” Does she wish that social media existed in the days of Laguna Beach, for her own sake? Well, that’s a different matter entirely. “It’s interesting, because people will comment with things like, ‘oh you’ve grown up a lot.’ Yes, I have grown up a lot, but also this has always been who I am,” says Cavallari. “And in the same breath, yes, of course I’ve matured quite a bit since I was 18, 19, 20, but the core of me has always been the same.” Fast-forward to 2018, and the girl who was once known for being part of Lauren Conrad’s “love triangle” is, in every sense of the word, satisfied. She’s happily married, and her wedding day is one that’s still fresh in her mind. “Not to sound cheesy, but literally the entire day was so perfect,” she shares. “Our reception was so fun. We had about 120 people and it

was truly our closest friends and family; it felt intimate to us. We really focused on three things to make it perfect in our eyes, so that was really good food, great booze, and really good music. We had a five-person motown band and every single person was on the floor.” She credits her relationship right now as “the closest we’ve ever been,” explaining, “we know each other so well and we’re so incredibly comfortable with one another. And I would take our relationship now over what it was in the beginning.” Aside from her children, Cavallari’s current pride and joy is her jewelry line, Uncommon James. “I started this company by myself and I’ve never had that kind of creative freedom in my life, and it’s so satisfying,” she says, and I can feel the excitement in her voice radiating through the phone. “It’s so freeing. It’s the hardest job I’ve ever had and I love every second of it. I love jewelry—I think that accessories make or break your outfit. But it’s more about owning a company for me that’s so fun. It’s the most challenging thing for me, besides being a mom, that I’ve ever done. Uncommon James hasn’t even been around for a year, and I’m already opening my own brick and mortar—which is scary as hell but it’s also really exciting.” As we speak, Cavallari is preparing for a short book tour to promote her new cookbook True Roots: A Mindful Kitchen with More Than 100 Recipes Free of Gluten, Dairy, and Refined Sugar. “My cookbook is truly a passion project of mine—I’m such a healthy eater and I’m just excited to share with everyone that being healthy doesn’t mean boring,” she explains. “You’re not missing out on anything. I really think that you can eat anything as long as you’re choosing the right ingredients … this cookbook is how I eat on a daily basis. I honest-to-God make everything in this cookbook all the time; it’s how my family and I eat. I’m a home cook who loves to cook healthy and I’m doing this to share that with my fans, who are excited about eating healthy and want to get on track.”

C

avallari’s tour will take her to New York, Nashville, and Chicago, and she’ll take her children with her to Chicago to see her mom. Even though Los Angeles isn’t on the list of promotional cities, I have to ask the obvious question— is there a possibility of having a play date with new moms (and former Hills co-stars) Audrina Patridge and Heidi Montag? “We talk about it all the time!” Cavallari assures me. “It’s just hard because they’re in L.A., and I’m in Nashville. But I’d love to. Audrina and Heidi both reached out to me a lot and I love that I was able to be there for them because when I had Camden, my oldest, I had no one I could turn to for advice or for any kind of help. So being able to be there for my co-stars and my ‘normal’ friends, too, I love nothing more.” Work, family, business success—life seems to be coming at Cavallari fast, and for a while, that’s what she always wanted. “My whole life, I always wanted to be older,” she says. “I always wanted to be in the next phase of my life, but now I just want everything to slow down. I wish I could’ve just enjoyed being 18.” She pauses, as if she’s reflecting on the journey she’s had so far, the one that’s taken her from small-town suburbia to the beaches of Hollywood and back to the grounded, simple, family-oriented life she knew before all her fame and fortune. “Just enjoy the journey and enjoy the moment.” For a girl who once wanted to grow up too fast, Cavallari is now making sure it all counts.

The trendier the wedding, the sooner it becomes dated. No one wants to look back in a year or two and wish they had done things differently. To avoid regrets, stay classic and timeless in your look, and then bring in unique details in small doses.

Chandeliers and hanging floral installations will definitely continue their popularity, as it is a sure way to create the wow-factor over a dance floor or above the head table. A traditional bouquet of flowers never goes out of style. An all-white composition of peonies or roses is every bit as versatile as a little black dress; it’s a look that will withstand the test of time. A lavish floral arrangement is beautiful in its drama and femininity, and it doesn’t get better than this. From cascading floral centerpieces, in pops of bright pink, blush, and cream, to dangling crystals and wisteria that cover the ceiling, creating an aura of romance, the possibilities are endless! Allowing the details of your wedding to reveal who you are, as both a couple and as individuals, will make your guests feel more engaged and celebratory. Regardless of the styles you love, the colors you choose, or the music you dance to, your romantic love story will be fondly remembered for generations to come.

A MATCH made in

TEXAS The Marriage of John and Caroline Bonadelle Managing Editor Lauren Barisic Photography Jennefer Wilson

—58— MAY | JUN

W

hen first meeting newlyweds John Bonadelle and Caroline Baliker, the sweetness between the two is immediately apparent; you can tell that this is a couple whose friendship is the core of their love for one another. John and Caroline’s story together commenced at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, Texas, but they are building the next chapter of their lives in Fresno, California. It all started at SMU. Caroline grew up in Houston, Texas with her little sister, but moved to Dallas to attended SMU for accounting. John grew up the eldest of three siblings in Fresno, California, and also chose SMU because of its business school’s notoriety. The two had mutual friends in college, but didn’t formally meet until their junior year on spring break, yet it wasn’t until that summer that they reconnected and hit it off. “I think we both knew pretty early on. It just felt natural,” said Caroline. She brought John to meet her family in Houston that following winter break, and then Caroline followed him to California to meet his family a few days later. They dated those final two years of college, and then for another two after graduation. From shared interests to their calm dispositions, John and Caroline’s similarities far outweigh any differences. Independently, John loves duck hunting and golf, and Caroline is avid about running and Pilates. But together, they enjoy being physically active outdoors. Dallas made them major foodies, so they are always eager to try new restaurants, as well as experiment with cooking. The couple love to travel, and have been to several states together already. Before settling down, visiting Europe and going on a safari are on their bucket list. It was on a vacation in New York City that John popped the question. The couple went out to dinner in Brooklyn with some friends, and then back to the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, where they were staying; he proposed in the lounge there. Was she expecting it? “Kinda, but we had talked about it … I didn’t know exactly when, but [I knew] it was coming.” Friends had been teasing them the night before, asking when it was going to happen, but Caroline admitted she had no idea he’d do it right after. John proposed the weekend before Thanksgiving 2016, but the couple chose to wait until after the holidays to begin planning their wedding. “You got right into it! And I tried to stay out of it!” John divulged with a smile and an enduring chuckle. “Yeah, I was a very hands-on bride,” Caroline admitted, though the couple hired a wedding planner to help. “We didn’t want to see each other before the wedding, the ceremony,” Caroline explained of their shared traditional tendencies. She made a point of integrating traditions to honor John’s Italian roots. His grandmother’s Italian cookies were included, and each place-setting had the traditional five almond favors, which signify five wishes for the bride and groom: happiness, health, wealth, fertility, and longevity. Both partook in groom & mother and bride & father dances. To honor Caroline’s special relationship with her maternal grandparents, she shared a dance with her grandfather, and carried the handkerchief her grandmother used on her wedding day.

—60— MAY | JUN

Getting married on the SMU campus, where it all began, was the logical place to start their journey as husband and wife. John and Caroline tied the knot in a traditional Catholic ceremony on January 13th, 2018, at SMU’s campus church, Perkins Chapel. “It was perfect and everything we wanted,” mused Caroline of their wedding day. Well, almost perfect… It turns out the Catholic Church wasn’t on board with incorporating John’s beloved hunting lab, Brick, into the ceremony itself. The wedding party included eight bridesmaids and nine groomsmen, and 250 guests joined them in the celebration. “Most people [came] from out of town, either Houston or Fresno … Everyone that was there you knew on a really intimate level,” John said of their guest list. Black tie was optional, and everyone was dressed to the nines. Caroline’s ivory, sweetheart neckline gown, with allover lace, was classically elegant. Her “something blue” was her grandmother’s sapphire ring. Styled with a sleek, side-parted chignon, petite diamond drop earrings, and perfectly pink lips, the look truly captured the bride’s polished aesthetic. Both John and Caroline enjoy history and appreciate the elegant, elaborate architecture of historical landmarks, so they held their reception at downtown Dallas’ Adolphus Hotel. Round tables were set with white linens, topped with tall, fluted vases featuring bouquets of pale pink roses, a medley of white flowers, and a touch of greenery. Being foodies, fantastic cuisine was a must. Canapes of tuna tataki on a wonton crisp, heirloom tomato on burrata toast, and black-eyed pea tempura shrimp were waiter-passed. A sit-down dinner began with charred corn, lump crab, and poblano soup as the appetizer. Guests had a choice between miso-marinated sea bass, Texas grilled filet mignon, or house-made cavatelli pasta for the main course. The five-tier wedding cake was vanilla sponge with vanilla creme and raspberry filling, while the groom’s cake was chocolate devil’s food sponge with white chocolate mousse and buttercream. But, “The best part was the band!” John and Caroline enthusiastically agreed, revealing that their first dance was to “The Way You Look Tonight.” “We both loved The Parent Trap when we were younger,”

Caroline began. “It was more a function of my sisters loving The Parent Trap,” laughed John. “So the song ‘L.O.V.E.’ was played while we cut the cake,” continued Caroline. Family friend Pat LaRocca, owner of Five Restaurant in Fresno, even serenaded the bride with a beautiful rendition of “Sweet Caroline” that evening. The couple planned to ride away from the festivities at the Adolphus in a horse-drawn carriage, but seeing as the temperature was a mere 20° outside, the horse had to be convinced to get moving, leaving the newlyweds to wonder what the delay was. Guests partied until 4 o’clock in the morning, and eventually went for pizza, before retiring from celebrating the union of the young Bonadelle couple. For their honeymoon, as much as John and Caroline love travel, they decided against going around the world because they wanted a short flight, so the couple spent a week at the luxurious Rosewood Mayakoba Resort in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, near Cancún. “While we were sitting there on our honeymoon, we realized that we hadn’t really planned anything beyond the honeymoon … The itinerary stopped!” John revealed. Nevertheless, right after returning to the States, the couple packed up and moved from Dallas to California, where they have managed to find a happy work/home balance in Fresno; John is Director of Operations at Bonadelle Neighborhoods, and Caroline works as a CPA for The Garabedian Group. Weekends are their opportunity to go jogging and hiking, while most evenings are spent breaking in their new cookbooks together (they are really into making cedar plank salmon as of late) and catching up on favorite television shows (unless it’s baseball season; they’re Giants and Astros fans). It really is the simple pleasures in life that make it worth living. With love, great company, and good food and music, it appears this couple is well on their way to a lifetime of happiness. Cheers to #BecomingBonadelle, the marriage of John and Caroline—a match made in Texas.

Choosing the style and decor of your home is almost as big of a commitment as the one you just made to your fiancé… We know it can be a bit overwhelming!

From your bedroom and bathroom linens, to your stoneware and fine china, there are many choices in every category of bridal registry. Take it one step at a time, and remember that the love is in the details! Although you may gravitate toward neutral selections because you’re not sure where you’ll be living, add some spice in there. Utilize the services offered by your registry consultant to style your new home! Here are the top 12 things you should know about registering, to ensure you get exactly what you want (and need).

—64— MAY | JUN

1. Time it right. We recommend that you begin to register as soon as you get engaged! Many guests will be inquiring about what to buy for your pre-wedding celebrations (engagement party, showers, brunches), and for those who’d like to send something as a token of congratulations. 2. Take stock. Make a list of what you both have and will keep, and also what you still need and want. Consider the need for “everyday” and “formal” versions of dinnerware, glassware, table linens, and serve ware. Will you incorporate what you already have, or will you completely refresh your dining collections? Speak with your registry consultant about this to potentially utilize your pre-existing dinnerware. 3. Choose more than one spot. Different necessities come from different stores. Cover them all by selecting at least two locations for your bridal and gift registry. 4. Know your guests. Be sure to register for items in a range of prices so people can choose gifts within their means. Provide a good mix; think traditional for older relatives, and affordable and fun for college friends. Don’t hesitate to register for items you really want—your guests want to get you something memorable for this very special occasion! 5. Over register. To satisfy gift needs for showers, engagement parties, and, of course, your wedding, request more items than the number of people on your guest list (i.e., if you have 200 invited wedding guests, this will equal 100 wedding gifts + another 100 bridal shower gifts at minimum). Having options doesn’t look ostentatious; you’re actually doing guests a favor by giving them more choices. 6. Get the good stuff. The largest hesitation we see from brides is on fine china. Many brides feel that they won’t use it because it’s too delicate—this is a huge misconception! Porcelain or china is actually the most durable item you will register for because of how it is made. The fine-particle clay is fired at a higher temperature than what you might choose for your daily dinnerware or stoneware. This method of making results in most fine china being dishwasher, microwave, and oven safe, unless the manufacturer indicates otherwise, or it has a gold, silver, or platinum trim. Although china has a more formal feeling about it, you can most certainly enjoy it every single day, and make Wednesday evening dinner feel a little more special.

7. Get plenty of plates. It’s a good idea to request 12-16 place settings. Regular dinner parties are usually only six to eight people, but if you have a large family and plan on entertaining during the holidays, you should register for more. Also, bear in mind that you may lose some over time—you’ll appreciate having these extra settings in 5, or even 15, years from your wedding date! 8. Guide the gift giving. A good point to keep in mind when you first register is to sign up for products that you really want or need, like your china and bathroom linens. Then, as items on your checklist start to dwindle, add more. That way you won’t be stuck with a gravy boat, when instead you really needed those extra salad plates. 9. Stay in season. If you have longer than one year before the wedding, don’t register for seasonal items that will be replaced in a few months. When guests go to purchase, these items may be unavailable. 10. Let your guests know. Unfortunately, it’s not advised to include your bridal registry on the wedding invitation. You should share your that information with very close friends, bridal party, and immediate family because those are the first people that get asked when your guests are in search of the perfect gift for you and your fiancé! Also, be sure to include your bridal registry on your bridal shower invitations and wedding website! 11. Weekend update. Most gifts are purchased two weeks before and two weeks after bridal showers and weddings. Be sure to recheck your registry and add additional items, if necessary, to make sure guests have options! 12. Be gracious. Remember to thank your guests! Each person took the time to hand-select a gift for you and your honey. Please take the time to hand-write notecards to show your gratitude. Your thank you notes should be sent within three months of returning from your honeymoon. During this joyous time in your life, don’t be practical; enjoy every minute! You deserve it! As you peruse all collections for your new life together, just remember what Elsie de Wolfe said: “I am going to make everything around me beautiful— that will be my life.” Cheers to you and your new life!

Are you a bride-to-be in 2018, or planning for 2019 already? If so, then I have just three words for you: texture, texture, texture. Statement lace in structured panels, head to toe beading, and three-dimensional adornments filled this year’s runways, and these trends are everything beautiful, elegant, and wow-inducing. We are also seeing a twist to the traditional “something blue” with pale blue silk gowns; it is something unexpected yet classic all at the same time. If a blue gown doesn't suit your style, try punching up the impact with just a hint of blue peaking out from under your gown, as you walk down the aisle in crystal-clad, navy Badgley Mischka heels. When else will your feet ever look so good? A new take on sleeves is a ruffle adornment; the added flounce gives a sense of whimsy and elegance. If veils aren't quite your style, try a cape or capelet for an added wow, perfect for adding a touch of demure. The newest trend of late is the two-piece gown—a fitted bodice, a glimpse of skin, and a skirt, in any number of styles. The options are endless, making that special dress even more special. Whatever your style preference, there is a gown (or three) to fit your taste, making the decision that much harder. But remember, whichever you choose, you're bound to look stunning.
