LETTER FROM

THE EDITOR

I have always enjoyed this time of year. I’m not sure what it is about the holiday season. Maybe it’s the change in weather, the festive decorations, or anticipation over the inevitable indulgence in retail therapy and gift-giving. Whatever it is, each year seems to bring its own special nuances and memorable experiences. Within this issue we tried to capture the spirit and unique energy of the 2015 holiday season. One of my favorite articles can be found on page 62. Once again our Lifestyle Editor, Pandora Vanderpump-Sabo, gives us a glimpse of what it takes to make A Very Merry Vanderpump Christmas that we’re sure you won’t want to miss. Within this spread you will find a plethora of delectable recipes and effortlessly-elegant decorating tips to take your holiday bash to the next level. You can see more of what Pandora has to offer by visiting our website at www.cvlux.com and perusing the extended content. Another stand-out in this edition is the fabulous fall trends we have highlighted on page 88. Some Like It Haute is a gorgeous editorial highlighting some of the latest designer styles from Gucci, Hermes and Saint Laurent, to name a few. Set in picturesque Central Park at the heart of bustling New York City, photographer Natasha Kertes, captures an effortless elegance set against the lush golds and vibrant oranges and reds of the autumn season. We feel sure you will agree that looking through Natasha’s camera lens is a view you won’t be able to get enough of. That’s why we are delighted to welcome Natasha to the Modern Living family and will continue to feature her work this coming year.

Speaking of New York, this year we featured none other than the glamorous fashion maven, Tinsley Mortimer, on our holiday cover. Tinsley made her mark on the New York social scene as the “it” girl about town in the early part of the millennium, and she doesn’t show any sign of stopping. Since then Tinsley has evolved into top-selling author and multifaceted designer, and most recently, launched her own line of housewares. I found Tinsley to be bubbly, fun, refreshingly open and quite frankly, a sheer delight on set. Chatting with her about everything from marriage, her artistic upbringing in the south, the inspiration for her exciting new designs, to her time at Vogue. You can read all about Ms. Mortimer on page 76. To see her entire line of exquisite home décor, visit www.popcultureliving.com. While you turn the pages of this edition, please remember to take some time and vote for this year’s Luxury Awards. Visit www. cvlux.com to cast your vote. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Marjaree Mason Center. The Awards are set for January 22, 2016 at TorNino’s Banquets, and is sure to be the event of the season. Once you finish voting be sure to purchase your ticket or table online. The event is already filling up and space is limited. I have to once more thank all of our clients and readers for supporting us over the last two years. We have so much to celebrate as we embark on 2016. And remember to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and subscribe to our newsletter online. Cheers and Happy Holidays,

Vonda Flanigan High Profile Feature Editor Ann T. Sullivan Whitehurst

Vonda’s, located at the Villaggio Center, began as a quaint little flower shop in early spring of 1977. Only 900 square feet, with no heat or air conditioning, that first little shop may not have looked like a dream come true, but for Vonda Flanigan, it was. Today she is celebrating 38 years in a store whose customers shop for gifts for all seasons and occasions. Vonda was born and raised in a small town in Illinois where she met and married her husband, Andy. In 1965 the young couple moved to Fresno where Andy worked as a chemical engineer with Valley Nitrogen. Together they had three children, two boys and one girl. Vonda was a stay-at-home mom who did volunteer work until the idea of a flower shop was born in the late ‘70’s. Self-trained, Vonda began those early days in her first shop ordering, designing and delivering flowers herself, with the help of her daughter, Trina, a Fresno State student at the time. “It was family encouragement that got me through those early days,” she says. Vonda Flanigan Owner, Vonda’s at Villaggio

Over time the little shop grew, eventually evolving into carrying gifts, as well as floral arrangements, and ultimately led to the delightful dilemma of needing more space. While at their Bullard and West location, Vonda’s continued to blossom, expanding into a full-line china shop, even being honored by a visit from Lord Wedgwood of England, who came as an ambassador for Wedgwood China. “During his visit, Lord Wedgwood also assisted in raising a beautiful robin’s egg blue Rolls Royce on four Wedgwood teacups and saucers. Being a hot summer in Fresno — guess what? — they sank into the asphalt!” Vonda remembers with fondness. The store’s move to Fig Garden Village was another “dream come true” for Vonda. Within a few months they opened a Hallmark store, also in Fig Garden Village. A few years later they separated the flower shop from the gift shop, into a third shop. Later, they relocated to the current location at Blackstone and Nees.

“The new store brought along with it new ventures like adding more ‘wee one’ items, expanding the gift lines and adding yummy candy. But along with the new we still love having the ‘old,’” says Vonda. “Vonda’s has grown from a tiny shop to what it is today, a store with much to share with the great people who come across our doorstep.” When asked what advice Vonda would give about having such a successful career, Vonda talked about investing and mentoring young people to reach their full potential. She knows most of her employees’ final career destination is not her shop, but she is committed to teaching them while they work for her, so they can carry that experience with them. Vonda enjoys baking, gardening and her “pig-out food” is any good hamburger. But a great evening for Vonda is to stay home with her husband and make meatloaf from her mother’s recipe. “I am often asked when I plan to retire,” Vonda says. “My answer? Not any time soon.”

ou know the feeling … the rush of excitement the first time you see a handbag that draws you in. It’s the outward expression of your inner self being shown to the world. For more reasons than we can put into words, accessories make us happy. If you don’t believe me, just look around and you will see almost every woman carrying one. So how did you find that perfect one? We first start by looking at the color, materials, price, size, etc. However, nowadays we need more than that. We need a brand that we connect with the heritage of what they represent. We want to extend our personal connection beyond the design to the actual meaning of the design. A brand that takes you on a journey and aligns with your lifestyle; that is who we want to support and what shopping is all about. I recently was introduced to a new brand, Kalamarie Handbags, that is launching their first collection, Heritage. Two sisters, Meli (in NYC) and Kara (in London) sought out to create a brand based on the inspiration of their home country of Colombia. The name Kalamarie was created out of the love of the colonial city of Cartagena. Cartagena was previously known as Calamari and the sisters tweaked the spelling to accommodate it to fit with their initials, K&M. Kalamarie Handbags took influences from the door knockers to design the distinctive Kalamarie Handbags Trademark Gecko. They fused all their innovative creativity with the experience of living in the west to curate their handbags. I got a chance to interview the owners and learn more about their stunning designs and luxurious exotic leathers.

CVLUX: How did you decide to start this business?

CVLUX: What is unique about your products?

KM: As sisters, we are very close and had each gone through the experience of leaving the loving family home and our country, to set up lives overseas. One day, we were both in NYC, having lunch in a roof-top restaurant after attending a sewing and crafts course together. We were full of ideas. We started talking about home and we soon identified we both wanted to create something that would speak highly of Colombia. We kept talking and came up with the idea of leather accessories. We even shared some design ideas. We spoke for a good few hours and then set off to get drawing pads and that was pretty much the genesis of this project. That planted the seed.

KM: We believe we are offering a top quality product, with ethicallysourced materials, at very fair prices. Crocodile is a material that will last a lifetime. It is an investment and we believe we offer the best possible rate for that investment, along with beautiful, timeless design and functionality. From a design point of view, we offer the fusion of two worlds in our designs—beautifully handcrafted materials are made urban, but classic and sophisticated, all at the same time.

CVLUX: What has been your greatest obstacle to overcome? KM: Finding a manufacturer that shared our values and goals, and that we could form a meaningful partnership with.

We are an emerging brand of luxury goods, but more than anything, we are a family business; we want to deliver our customer the best personal experience. We come from a culture where the line between business and pleasure is blurred because there is kindness and warmth in making business. We want people to feel happy not just that they have bought a new handbag, but that they bought a Kalamarie.

CVLUX: What materials do you use? KM: We use Colombian leather, Colombian crocodile, both vegetable tanned, as well as Colombian calf leather and Italian gold-plated hardware. We do an all-croc range, made to order, in which only croc is used in the exterior, and calf leather in the lining. CVLUX: What is the style of Kalamarie Handbags? KM: Urban street style: a fusion of influences and needs reflected in the look of the Kalamarie woman. She is the woman that needs a handbag to think for her and to be tough, pretty and functional, but also a woman who cares about what she buys, one that searches the emerging brand, the different look and that something special. The Kalamarie woman is an everyday woman who is very much her own person, and distinct from the masses. CVLUX: What is one thing you would like customers to know about you? KM: We care. We do this because we love it and we want you to love it too. CVLUX: What is your philosophy of life? KM: Be alive! In every sense and sensorial way. The complex beauty of life is only truly appreciated with all senses open to the feeling. Even if the feeling is pain, be alive to it. In time, you will find even pain is beautiful in its own way. Sausage Stuffing Presents Sausage and Walnut Stuffing inside a Crunchy Dough Package We all know that stuffing is a delicious and essential part of any holiday feast. However, the stuffing inside the bird is never enough in our house! I always make extra stuffing for my guests, and this is one of my favorite ways to do it! It’s also the perfect way to use up any leftover stuffing and create something unique and delicious. Who wouldn’t want an adorable little crunchy dough package filled with a holiday favorite? Enjoy! Ingredients Makes 6-8 packages Pork & Walnut Stuffing (recipe below) 2 ½ to 3 cups flour ½ tsp salt 1 ½ tbsp olive oil 1 cup warm water (100˚F) 1 package active dry yeast Kitchen cooking twine Preparation First Make the Dough 1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the oil, water and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes. 2. Add 2 cups of flour and mix on a medium speed to combine. 3. If using a stand mixer, add a dough hook attachment, and knead the dough for about 5 minutes until it begins to form a bowl. If you are using your hands, knead on a floured surface for about 5 minutes. 4. The dough should not be sticky, so add the remaining flour if necessary to slightly dry out the dough. Do not make your dough too dry. 5. Remove the dough from the mixer, and knead for a few minutes by hand. 6. Place in a lightly oiled bowl, cover and let rest for 45 mins-1 hour. Then, Make the Packages: 1. Preheat the oven to 425˚. 2. Divide the dough into about 8 pieces. 3. On a floured surface, roll out one of the pieces into a thin round (about 7 inches across).

72

CVLUX.COM 2015

4. With an ice cream scoop, place a ball of stuffing into the middle of the dough. 5. Scoop up the sides of the dough around the stuffing, and tie at the top with a piece of kitchen twine. 6. Place on a buttered baking tray. Repeat with the other pieces of dough. 7. Bake for about 30 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown and crunchy. Pork & Walnut Stuffing Ingredients 1 cup salted butter, melted 1 large yellow onion, diced 1 apple, skinned and diced 1 lb bulk Pork sausage, without casing 1 package of slider buns or 1 loaf of white bread 2 cups chopped walnuts 3 tbsp chopped fresh parsley 3 tbsp chopped fresh thyme 2 large eggs ¼ cup milk 1 tsp salt 1 tsp ground black pepper Preparation 1. Preheat the oven to 375˚. 2. In a large sauté pan, add 1 tbsp of the melted butter and set over a medium-high heat. 3. Add the onion and cook until almost translucent, about 2 minutes.

4. Add the diced apple and cook until softened, about 2 minutes. 5. Add the sausage to the pan and break it up with your spoon. Sauté, stirring constantly, until completely broken up, browned and cooked through. Remove from the heat and let cool. 6. Meanwhile, rip the slider buns into tiny crumb pieces. Throwing the slider buns into a food processor makes this process infinitely easier. 7. Once the buns have been shredded, add them to a large oven-proof bowl. 8. Combine the breadcrumbs with the walnuts, parsley and thyme. 9. In a separate small bowl, lightly whisk the eggs and milk together. Combine with the breadcrumbs. 10. Add the cooled sausage to the breadcrumb mixture and season with salt and pepper. Combine everything with your hands until you have a smooth sausage-bread mixture. 11. Place into the oven and cook for 30 minutes, until the top is golden brown. 12. Remove the stuffing, let cool, and refrigerate until you are ready to make the stuffing packages!

Chewy Chocolate Christmas Cookies Chewy, rich and delicately-covered with powdered sugar, these cookies not only taste amazing but also look like they have just been in a wintery snowfall. Easy to make and essential for any holiday party, these cookies are the perfect gift to leave out for Santa! Enjoy! Ingredients 4 oz unsweetened baking chocolate ¼ cup salted butter 4 eggs 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 cups granulated sugar 1 ½ cups flour ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder 2 tsp baking powder ¼ tsp salt 1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips 1 cup icing sugar

Preparation 1. Place a heat-proof bowl over a saucepan of boiling water. 2. Add the butter and baking chocolate to the bowl and heat it over the water, stirring constantly, until the chocolate and butter have melted and the mixture is smooth. Remove from the heat. 3. In a stand mixer, combine the eggs, vanilla and sugar and beat for about 4 minutes, until the mixture is light and fluffy. 4. Slowly add the chocolate/butter mixture into the stand mixer and beat until everything is combined. 5. Add the flour, salt, cocoa powder and baking powder into the stand mixer and mix until all ingredients are combined. 6. With a wooden spoon, stir in the chocolate chips. 7. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for about 1-2 hours until the dough is hard enough to be able to form into balls. 8. Preheat the oven to 325˚. 9. Butter and flour 2 baking sheets. 10. Place the icing sugar in a separate bowl. 11. Carefully roll a rounded tablespoon of dough in your hands until you have formed a ball. Drop the ball into the powdered sugar, and roll to coat. 12. Place the powdered cookie ball on the baking sheet. Repeat with all the dough, spacing cookies about 3 inches apart. 13. Bake for about 15 minutes. When cookies are done, they will appear fluffy and crackled. CVLUX.COM 2015

Peppermint White Chocolate Martini What better way to celebrate this wonderful holiday season than by sipping on a fabulously festive cocktail? This recipe is reminiscent of all things Christmas: white chocolate, peppermint and candy canes. Just be careful— it might taste delectably drinkable, but it’s almost 100% alcohol! Ingredients (Makes 1 martini) 1 large or 4 small candy canes (reserve 1 small one for garnish!) 1 oz Godiva White Chocolate Liqueur 1 oz Crème de Cacao 1 oz Vodka 1 tsp peppermint extract Ice Preparation 1. In a pestle and mortar or food processor, crush the candy canes into a chunky sugar mixture. Spread the candy cane sugar onto a plate. 2. Lightly brush a wet paper towel around the rim of your martini glass. Once the lip is wet, transfer the upside-down martini glass to the candy-cane sugar plate, and twist until the entire rim is coated. 3. In a shaker, add the white chocolate liqueur, vodka, crème de cacao, peppermint extract and ice. 4. Shake vigorously. 5. Strain into the martini glass. 6. We like to hang a mini candy cane on the side of the glass for an added festive touch. Enjoy!

hatever you think you know about Tinsley Mortimer, it’s without a doubt not the whole story. Once a frequently photographed “socialite” and reality star in New York, she’s been an author, a fashion designer, a beauty ambassador, and most recently, the designer of a tabletop collection. Before we get to her business ventures, I ask Tinsley about her time in New York, when her face was plastered all over the tabloids and magazines. “When I went to Columbia,” she says, “I lived in St. Anthony Hall a co-ed arts and literary fraternity, one of the oldest in the nation.” And without Tinsley saying so, I imagine everyone was as pretty and tan as she is: leggy, blonde and looking to have fun. “It was this very cool, secretive kind of club,” Tinsley explains. “We lived in a big townhouse on Riverside Drive, and Vogue wanted to run a piece about us.”

The photos in the shoot were undoubtedly drool-worthy— all of the residents of St Anthony Hall looking blessed and beautiful—although the photos didn’t end up running. But some might say that’s where everything started for Tinsley Mortimer. They led to her meeting the Beauty Director of Vogue, Amy Astley who later became the Editor-in-Chief for Teen Vogue.

your own. This, too, is her big advice for young women: create. Find something you’re passionate about.

“Interviewing for the job was quite the experience, as you can imagine meeting with Anna Wintour is somewhat surreal, to say the least,” she recounted.

But I figure she must have known some important things at age 20, at least about having a good time.

Her life seems to have been a series of fortunate events, as though every time she steps out of one cocktail party she happens to wander into another, equally as fabulous. When we chat about her new homeware collection, she’s in her home in Palm Beach, Florida, but more specifically, she’s sitting up on her bed with her two Chihuahuas, Bebe and Bambi, using one of her Lucite trays as a desk. I ask her about the biggest misconception people have of her, and she thinks that it must be that she doesn’t work hard, even though she’s working, even in her downtime. “Or maybe that I’m not nice,” she says, and laughs. (She’s actually more than nice—bubbly and easy to talk to). In reality, she’s been working fastidiously in design for a very long time, longer than most people know. In fact, her interest began at a very young age. Tinsley grew up in the South—Virginia to be exact—and her mother worked in interior design. In fact, Tinsley’s first word was “Churchill” because she’d been trying to say the word “material.” Her mother ran a small business, covering pictures frames in fabric, and while Tinsley sat in her mother’s makeshift studio/office in the basement, she became truly steeped in the world of interiors and entertaining.

80

“Also,” Tinsley says, “listen to your parents. They have your best interests at heart. At 20, I thought I knew everything. I thought I knew better than them. Of course, I didn’t.”

“I do know a thing or two about throwing a great party,” she says, and something tells me she’s right. Tinsley’s homeware collection is a fascinating amalgamation of her childhood in the South and everything that came after it: her much-talked-about time in New York, the years she spent in fashion in Japan, and now, her home in Florida. Who better to design a collection of home entertaining essentials? “It’s a spin on traditional,” Tinsley says, when I ask her to describe her aesthetic. It’s definitely a spin, but a uniquely-beautiful one, inspired by the decadence of her childhood: traditional American pieces, old, heavy Louis XIV chairs, silk and detailed satins. The fabrication Tinsley chooses she describes as, “fabric you almost want to make a dress out of.” Combine that with Japanese influences, and most recently, the colors of Palm Beach (lime green, orange, aqua and fuchsia). Her unique tableware collection is just as unique as Tinsley’s cultural experiences: picture glassware with miniature palm trees, blue and white porcelain, the redlacquered tables and ornate gold Koi fish of Japan, and of course—of course—Southern tradition.

“She would actually join the wood herself, and then cover them with this beautiful, luxurious fabric,” Tinsley says. “People really responded. The frames started being sent everywhere.”

“The result of all those different influences is that it’s hard to define,” Tinsley says.

This was an important lesson, as it confirmed for her that confidence comes from being able to build something on

One thing is easy to define, however, and that is that these accessories are perfect for entertaining, whether it’s a formal cocktail hour or a laidback party. I, for one, don’t want to miss out on any party advice from this woman.

I ask Tinsley about growing up in the South, and how it influenced her: “The South made me who I am,” she explains, though when she first moved to New York, her outsider status set her apart. “I wasn’t afraid to wear pink while everyone else was wearing jeans.”

over the country for ETS, including those for Palm Beach Polo and the Miami Dolphins.

It’s hard to believe that she was embarrassed about being a Southerner for a minute. But just a minute. Before long, the very things that made Tinsley different also made her strong and interesting; it gave her a distinct point of view and set her apart from the rest of her peers.

“Follow your dreams and know that you can have it all,” Tinsley says. Inspiring words from much more than just a party girl.

“I wanted to wear color when other people were wearing black,” Tinsley tells me. “I wanted to wear make-up; I wanted to do my hair up. I decided I wouldn’t feel ashamed. I became unapologetic.” And why should she apologize? That outsider status, and her super-fun-looking lifestyle in New York eventually led to one of her many incarnations as an author. She wrote a novel entitled Southern Charm, which was partly inspired by her actual life, as well as, Tinsley adds: “the parties, the people I knew, and the stuff I saw and did. I couldn’t help but write about it.” And while her life has been especially exciting, it definitely hasn’t been easy to categorize. The only correct category for Tinsley might be “constantly changing.” Tinsley Mortimer is a study in adaptation. I ask her about the label “socialite,” a description that was thrust upon her whether she liked it or not. “I ended up embracing it,” Tinsley says, beginning undoubtedly with those fateful parties at St. Anthony Hall, which eventually led to her being photographed by Vogue, writing for the magazine and developing an interest in fashion. Maybe everything good in Tinsley’s life is the result of a really awesome party. She became the consummate hostess and expert in entertaining, and now is entertaining on a professional level. She currently serves as the Director of Events for Engineered Tax Services, the preeminent national leader in engineering-based tax advisory services for the CPA and design communities, real estate investors and businesses across America. A GIRLFRIENDS GUIDE

Travel Editor Reagan Lowery, ALTOUR Hotel Collection

I have always enjoyed traveling with significant others and members of my family, but some of the most memorable experiences are the trips that I have made with my “Bestie.” Traveling with one of my closest friends creates memories that make us smile and even giggle. There is a different type of laughter with my best friend, one that is unique and special because I know that we are connected on so many different levels. She is the sister that I never had and while our trips tend to get us in a little more trouble than the standard vacation, they are also the most fun and exciting! And of course, a girls’ getaway isn’t complete without an amazing hotel to relish after our long day of activities and adventure! Here are a few of our favorites at ALTOUR… ALTOUR Los Angeles; VIP Services Stefanie.Behrens@Altour.com 310-954-3277 * Stefanie’s personal connections add amazing value to each property, such as complimentary breakfast, room upgrades and spa credit.

Ritz Carlton Pudong

My Local Favorite: Ojai Valley Inn & Spa I adore the ocean coastline of Santa Barbara, but there is something more restoring and intimate about staying a bit further inland. Ojai Valley Inn & Spa has always been one of my favorites. Ojai is a Chumash Indian word that means “The Nest.” It couldn’t be a more cozy and quaint city with its charming tasting rooms, family-owned restaurants, farmers market, and unique shops to find that perfect hidden gem. You can spend your days taking gorgeous nature hikes, visiting the wineries of Ojai, such as The Ojai Vineyard, or Casa Barranca Tasting Room, driving up to have dinner at The Hitching Post, or shopping on Santa Barbara’s State Street. Ojai Valley Inn & Spa is the perfect place for a girls’ getaway because it has everything that we love. The Spanish style of the entire property feels seamless, comfortable and relaxing from the minute you pull in the drive. While the resort is quite large, I never feel overwhelmed by it and the grounds are beautiful and inviting. A short stroll from the tennis courts to the spa will delight the senses. I could describe the beauty and charm of the guestrooms, but while they are comfortable and lovely, we were barely in the room!

When I stayed at the Inn with my bestie we woke up and enjoyed coffee on our patio, followed by morning yoga and a dash to the pool to soak in the sun and enjoy fresh fruit smoothies. In the afternoon, we went to the spa for an afternoon of rejuvenating treatments, before hitting the driving range for a few shots at sunset. And speaking of Spa Ojai, it’s stunning (they even have a “pumpkin spice” treatment this season). My absolute favorite is the Kuyam Experience; you sit in Moroccan tile chaises and apply special cleansing desert clay all over your body, let your pores open and sweat in the intense dry heat, all the while being guided by traditional Chumash meditation and chant. What an experience! And for those of you with a passion for potions, Ojai has the ultimate apothecary to create your own lotions, soaps and bath salts. You create your own unique recipe, which you’ll never find in any store (think of Jasmine meets Amber), and add your own special scent profile dash of this and that. The Inn will keep your recipe on file, and you can order your own products for years to come— so unique and so special! Ojai Valley Inn & Spa

Shopping like a Pro: Ritz-Carlton Pudong, China I know I am supposed to talk about the amazing shopping in Shanghai and what a great girls’ getaway destination it is, but the first thing I always think of is the bathrooms of Ritz-Carlton in Shanghai, Pudong, and specifically, the bath tub. Truly, I have never loved a bath tub more. The alluring and stylish hotel room beckons you into the bathroom where you’ll find a bath tub that is like a lounge chair that you can actually take a bubble bath in! Ok, back to the hotel: I loved this hotel the minute we arrived. It has the fashionable taste of a luxury hotel in NY, the stylish clientele and social stature of Paris, a hint of trendy sex appeal from Los Angeles and the absolute best views of Shanghai that you could ask for. The property reflects aspects of many different cities but created a solid product that represents a beauty and grace all its own. The aesthetic includes sleek grey marble, fresh orchids covering empty spaces, splashes of rich pinks and reds, and rich velvet throughout the lobby. The hotel itself is beautiful and I love the design story that it represents. Designed by the world famous architect designer, Cesar Pelli, The RitzCarlton in Shanghai, Pudong is contemporary, with hints of new interpretations of 1930’s Shanghai Art Deco. This gives a great sense of place to the hotel, guest rooms and restaurants provide magnificent sweeping views over The Bund, which contains the most intact collection of Art Deco architecture anywhere in the world. And of course, we can’t forget the shopping! I would highly recommend a personal shopper to show you around the city. When we weren’t eating the most amazing dim sum or visiting open air markets, we were having pencil skirts and winter coats made by talented tailors. I thought shopping in Beverly Hills was nice, but shopping in Shanghai is a whole new adventure. It can be a bit stressful and sometimes overwhelming, so be prepared. My girlfriend and I had heard the urban legends of this glamorous experience before we left (Who are we kidding? That is why we went to Shanghai!), so we each had an idea of style, cut and color before the shopping extravaganza began. There are fabrics, colors and look books from all the recent runway shows, so choose your style, get measured and your clothes are delivered to your hotel the very next day.

Beach-Sleep-Party: The Miami Beach This one is easy … Miami is already fun and sexy, but with the opening of the Miami Beach edition, the entire city has reached a new level of class. I loved this hotel! And who wouldn’t want to travel to South Beach for a little fun in the sun with their best girlfriend? You pull up to the chic porte cochere, just off Collins Ave, and are greeted by some of the most handsome valet attendants (tall, tan and blonde). Then you enter a white marble lobby with gold accents and candles burning in every corner; this is when you feel true Miami culture, but with a unique sophistication and style. The rooms are large, serene and subtle, each imbued with a sense of ease and relaxation in neutral color schemes. This calming presence is such a wonderful contrast to the bright, loud and sometimes overwhelming beat of Miami streets. I loved the rooms, truly, but we could not have been happier with the dining outlets. Market at Edition is a delicious choice, featuring multiple food stations to choose from: bakery, charcuterie and cheese, raw bar, juice bar, pizza station and more. I recommend eating at the gorgeous Matador restaurant … more than once. While the same menu is offered, the experience in the dining room versus Matador Terrace was completely different; the dining room is more formal and the terrace has a more relaxed, poolside feel. Definitely don’t forego drinks at the Matador Bar, as well! And last, but not at all least, its Miami, edition has a beautiful pool that is reminiscent of throwback 50’s style, on prime beach real estate with full-service beach chairs and setup. But to end a girl’s trip in complete style, you must visit Basement. Night club, ice-skating rink and bowling alley, all in one glamorous venue … oh my!

Food and Culture: Capella Singapore My bestie’s parents moved to Singapore a few years ago and I have been fortunate enough to be invited on a few family visits. Singapore, as a whole, was such a beautiful and wonderful experience for me. It was my first trip to Southeast Asia and I have to say, it’s a location/destination that I could visit over and over. From the minute we arrived at the airport, I was so impressed with how clean and fresh everything was. Even the drive from the airport to her parent’s house was beautiful and unique: forest, water, metropolitan areas and beach. The city itself is stunning and has much to offer its visitors. We were able to walk through Chinatown and gather fun trinkets, visit the most spiritual and calming Buddhist temples and monasteries, take a river boat ride through the middle of the city, enjoy too many Singapore Slings (gin-based cocktail … delicious!) and experience the ultimate of views, while having dinner on the rooftop of Marina Bay Sands. I truly enjoyed seeing and learning all about Singapore, including eating as much spicy crab as possible, but the highlight was visiting the Capella property on Sentosa Island. Sentosa is a more relaxed and residential area of Singapore, just over the bridge, and Capella had some of the most distinct architecture that I had ever seen. I fell in love immediately.

Capella Singapore Premier Room

As you start the drive up toward the hotel, you become completely entranced by your surroundings. A vast green landscape with huge trees that already represent an abundance of history and age surrounds a grand building that combines traditional white columns and wrap-around balconies with a completely modern twist of glass walls and contemporary building structure. I genuinely thought it was one of the most intriguing and engaging hotels I had ever seen. The combination of rich and residential warmth feels like you have been invited into someone’s luxurious traditional home, mixed with modern dining outlets, cascading swimming pools and floor-to-ceiling windows in the guestrooms engaged all my senses in the most captivating way. You can tell how much I loved this hotel, and hopefully my best friend invites me to visit again!

Mix-It-Up: Golf and Spa at Verdura Resort, Sicily My best friend and I truly love to relax, play golf, spa, cook and enjoy fitness classes in this exquisite location. What’s better than a little physical activity mixed with the personal treat of a spa day? Verdura Resort in Sicily is the perfect destination for enjoying all of these things. I was originally intrigued by Verdura because I have always been a big fan of Rocco Forte properties (I even wrote about Browns London just a couple months ago), so when I read an article about Verdura representing Rocco Forte’s new spa philosophy, I knew we had to check it out. The spa philosophy is based on Sebastina Kneipp’s five pillars: water, plants, exercise, nutrition and balance. Verdura specifically features 5 health-focused programs: Fit, Slim, Detox, Anti-Age and Relax. This couldn’t be more perfect for a long-haul girl’s getaway that makes for extra bragging rights. Outside the spa, there are a million other fabulous ways for two friends (or a romantic couple) to spend quality time together. We were so happy to take advantage of yoga classes, organic cooking classes and even a personally-guided tour of the two championship golf courses, as well as the beautiful 9 hole par 3 course; the golf pro, David, wasn’t so bad either … Verdura faces the crystal clear Mediterranean Sea on the South Coast of Sicily, close to the fisherman village of Sciacca where you can enjoy authentic and absolutely delicious food, as well as appreciate the close proximity to amazing heritage sites and temples.

At the end of a most lovely day, we were thrilled to be sipping signature Sicilian mojitos made with fresh oranges, lemons and basil leaves while enjoying the heartwarming Sicilian sunset reflecting on the crystal water of the Mediterranean Sea. We left our vacation feeling relaxed, rejuvenated, healthy, spiritually-centered and awakened. This is truly a resort designed for guests to unwind while at the same time, maintaining your active side. isiting Los Angeles is exciting, but let’s be honest—it can be stressful. There are so many things to do and see, the city is so widespread and the traffic is a constant nuisance. But what if the best of L.A. could be brought to you? That’s the question Sofitel so brilliantly answers. Located right in the middle of Beverly Hills, Sofitel is an urban resort that brings European luxury to one of L.A.’s most famous enclaves. From the moment you walk through its doors, Sofitel’s attention to detail is apparent. French-inspired decor with a Hollywood twist provides an excellent backdrop to attentive staff and top-notch services. Each room and suite in Sofitel Los Angeles is outfitted with a SoBed, created exclusively for Sofitel. Let the noise and activity of Los Angeles fade away as you drift off on a Multispires mattress, topped in a featherbed, wrapped in a down comforter. After all, you’re going to need your energy to visit the pool and bar tomorrow. Sofitel’s outdoor, heated pool has an upper deck where you can watch all the action unfold: guests unwinding, locals visiting for a drink and Hollywood bigwigs meeting up to discuss business. It’s all happening at the Sofitel pool. Look out at the bustling city, down streets you’ve seen in dozens of movies. La Cienega Boulevard and Beverly Boulevard are exciting on the silver screen, but they’re even more exciting when you’re lounging above them at the Sofitel pool.
