Good Tidings to All
A
s 2020 begins to close, we embark on what is typically the most joyous time of the year: the holiday season. This year seems to be more reflective than others. Our world is in a new place, one which seems very uncertain at times. We should not fear the uncertainty, but, rather, reflect on the things that are certain: our family, our friends, and the moments that have shown us a shared humanity. We have experienced a collective loss this year. There has been the loss of normalcy, the loss of businesses, and the loss of human life. Grief is a horrible experience to have at any time, but especially during these winter months. It is through this universal loss that we have gained our renewed appreciation for one another.
Let this appreciation help us console each other through this unprecedented time in history. Let us continue to celebrate our diversity and bond over the things that are universally experienced by us all. Let us ask for continued humanity and humility. Let us accept the things we cannot control and learn how to adapt to better serve our neighbors and our community in the coming year. As Eleanor Roosevelt famously said, “With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts.” May this holiday season bring to you and your family a sense of renewed optimism, for out of great struggle comes a much stronger future. Wishing you the happiest of holidays, continued good health, and prosperity.

inter white is oh-so chic and never drab. We played on this home’s monochromatic scheme and brightened it even more by adding plush faux fur, snow dusted florals, and shiny silver tones. The dining room, with its oversized crystal chandelier and mirrored wall, is the focal point of this home. Playing off the reflective quality of both the mirrors and chandelier, we added mercury glass Christmas trees and frosted pine sprigs as part of the decorations. A faux fur table runner and feathered wreath softens the reflection and becomes the perfect visual anchor. To finish off the space, minimal greenery adds hints of festive cheer. Using the dining room as our template, we sprinkled the same luxury décor throughout the home. Jeweled reindeer, twinkle lights, and flocked branches transform this abode into a majestic winter wonderland.

s we continue to socially distance due to the current pandemic, our 2020 traditional holiday festivities will likely be smaller than ever before. Large family gatherings will be skipped so we can remain safe. However, small in scale does not necessarily mean small in holiday joy. We found that a fun and simple way to liven up your home is to bring in the warmth and glow of the harvest season. Deep ambers, earthy crimsons, and natural wood tones usher in a sense of abundance and richness. Focusing on what we have, instead of what is missing, helps us brave through this uncertain time. Most of the décor was locally sourced and is highly sustainable. I found the most perfect handmade pottery bowls from CnG Pottery, located in Clovis, California. The dried florals came from another Clovis haunt, The Foundry. Hand-dyed linen was sourced through Happy House, Fresno, California, by local maker Smith & Len. To balance some of the bright warm tones, hand-carved miniature trees were sprinkled throughout, creating a cute tree village. There is no right or wrong way to set your holiday table. You can have fun with twinkle lights or keep it minimal. The most important thing is to fill your hearts with hope and love. Although this year has been less than ideal, we have all learned so much. For that, we are better, stronger, and more resilient. What more could we ask for?

A Closer Look
Ceramides Beauty Editor Jessica McCafferty
Ceramides are a trusted ingredient you probably have in your beauty routine right now. According to Poshly (business.poshly.com), a California-based beauty technology company, 46% of beauty consumers already use them. So, what are ceramides and why should you try them? Let’s take a closer look.
“Ceramides are lipids which present in our own skin,” explains cosmetic chemist Ginger King (www.gracekingdombeauty.com). “They help to reinforce the skin barrier, to hold moisture, and prevent from environmental assaults.” The best part? “They not only protect our skin from ‘losing moisture’ and ‘getting irritation from environmental pollutants,’ they help to firm up our skin and give a younger presence,” King shares. Many popular brands on the market flaunt this ingredient in their formulas. But, as with all skincare products, it is important to know the difference between using the good versus the bad. “Ceramides happen to be one of the most expensive skincare ingredients available on the market, due to the time- and labor-intensive manufacturing process. There are only a handful of companies that make them globally,” notes Francine Krenicki, Vice President of Product Development & Regulatory for StriVectin. “Not many skincare products can afford to add ceramides to their formulas at efficacious levels. There are also different grades of ceramides, and a properly formulated product would include more than one type.” For our top product picks, we suggest trying StriVectin’s Wrinkle Recode Moisture Rich Barrier Cream—an indulgently rich, comforting cream that strengthens and nourishes while diminishing the look of fine lines and deep wrinkles.

Free Agent Skincare has LIGHTSPEED Hydra Glow C. With only four ingredients, including ceramides, this serum also uses 10% BV-OSC vitamin C to reduce the appearance of acne scarring, sun damage, and dark spots, and leaves skin absolutely glowing. Bluelene’s new Night Plus+ is a multi-tasking night cream and serum in one. It promotes UV exposure recovery, increases collagen and elastin production, and reduces hyperpigmentation as well as signs of aging. For the delicate eye area, look for Vichy Laboratories’ Liftactiv Serum 10 Eyes & Lashes. This powerful eyelash-fortifying and wrinkle-fighting serum smoothens and illuminates eyes to restore a more youthful, wideeyed appearance. If oils are your go-to, Blissoma has its Omega Miracle Facial Oil. Without clogging your pores or causing greasiness, it provides an elegant shield to keep skin looking firm and glowing. As we can see, this ingredient is definitely not one to be ignored. “Ceramides are so important because they protect the skin’s barrier,” agrees Nidah Barber-Raymond, owner of The Peel Connection in Beverly Hills (www.thepeelconnection.com). “As we age, we lose ceramides.” Therefore, she recommends using products with them on a daily basis to help rejuvenate skin. Layering up for the cooler weather and tucking your pants into knee-high boots may not sound very new, but boot season comes with a fresh silhouette this year. An average pair of suit pants can be refreshingly modern and fashion-forward when tucked into a luxurious, show-stopping boot.

ew Story is pioneering solutions to solve the monumental task of ending global homelessness. Homelessness is a tricky subject to engage with, but one thing is certain: action, above all else, is what is needed to remedy this international crisis. Due to the partnerships and innovations headed by New Story (a San Francisco-based non-profit)—namely ICON (an Austin-based construction technologies company) and ÉCHALE (New Story’s non-profit partner in Mexico)—the possibility is now within reach.
The lack of uniformity when defining the term “homelessness” hinders adequate comparisons when collecting figures from around the globe. “Based on national reports,” collected by YaleGlobal Online, “it’s estimated that no less than 150 million people, or about 2 percent of the world’s population [7.6 billion], are homeless. However, about 1.6 billion, more than 20 percent of the world’s population, may lack adequate housing.” By 2050, an estimated 3 billion people will be living without access to adequate shelter at this rate. Revolutionized homebuilding techniques are needed to prevent this already major problem from becoming exponential.

New Story is on a mission to tackle this massive issue, but they also recognize that the global homelessness crisis cannot be solved alone. The organization’s “Create, Prove, Share” model outlines their step-by-step methodology. Since traditional building methods will never catch up to growing shelter needs, they develop cutting-edge solutions to build homes and communities faster, better, and stronger. By listening intently to the people they serve, New Story creates communities using innovative tools and technology. When those strategies prove successful, they are shared with other non-profits and governments who are also working to end global homelessness. It all started in 2014 when Co-Founder & Chief Executive Officer Brett Hagler went on his first trip to Haiti. The dilapidated living conditions he witnessed inspired him to team up with three other passionate twentysomethings who shared the common goal of solving homelessness around the world. New Story, their brainchild, got its big break in 2015. Y Combinator, the world’s top venture accelerator, accepted New Story as one of 106 startups that made the cut that year (7,000 applied, resulting in a program acceptance rate of 1.5 percent. To put that into perspective, Harvard’s acceptance rate is 5.9 percent).
average fair market rate without paying more than 30 percent of one’s income, a person must earn at least $16.35 an hour,” resulting in an average monthly income of $2,616.00. The families who will live in the Tabasco, Mexico homes built by New Story and ICON survive on a mere $76.50 a month. Vulcan II’s 3D printed homes are built in around 24 hours’ time, also over the course of several days. They feature two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and a bathroom. Using New Story's Lean Participatory Design (LPD) process, the homes are co-designed with feedback from the families who will live in them. This way, the communities are planned to complement the lifestyle of those living within them, and residents feel more invested in their home and neighborhood. Through the LPD process, it was discovered that open green spaces were of utmost importance for 95 percent of the families who would live there, with 1 in 5 ranking it their top priority. Additionally, 99 percent of families preferred to have flat roofs to enable easier future additions and customizations—evidence of intent to settle indefinitely there and improve property value.
During New Story’s first six months, they were able to fund only 16 homes. Y Combinator challenged the fledgling organization (one of the first non-profits ever accepted into their program) to build 100 homes within 100 days. Incredibly, they managed to produce 113 homes that summer, establishing their first-ever community. Within four years, New Story expanded from Haiti to El Salvador, Bolivia, and Mexico where they have built 16 transformative communities, containing 2,700 homes, impacting 15,000 people.
To further encourage families to stay in the homes long-term and foster pride of residence, they receive a zero-interest, no-profit mortgage at a manageable rate of 400 pesos (the equivalent of approximately $18.70) per month, which lasts for seven years. The additional home cost is considered a subsidy from New Story. Mortgage funds go into a community investment fund rather than returning to New Story or ÉCHALE, their partner in Mexico. Over time, the families can vote on how the funds may be used. Families who are financially invested in their homes are likely to take better care of their community and provide more meaningful feedback during the design planning process.
That’s a big number, but not big enough for New Story, which has always been about going above and beyond to achieve a greater good. So, in 2017, they began working on a secret project in conjunction with ICON: building the world’s first 3D home printer, specifically designed to work 1) where housing is needed most and 2) under less-than-ideal conditions. Dubbed the Vulcan, the first printed home was unveiled at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas. The 350-square-foot home, printed over approximately 48 hours across several days in March of 2018, served as a proof-of-concept and demonstrated machine capability. There was absolutely no doubt that the prototype was impressive, though the technology needed further refinement.
There is a multiplying factor associated with home stability that New Story is keen to tap into. “It took a long time for mobile devices to penetrate Africa because companies focused on more lucrative markets. But look at the impact cell phones had in transforming entire economies and livelihoods on the Continent,” professes Alexandria Lafci, Co-Founder & Chief Operating Officer of New Story. “Instead of waiting for profit motivation to bring construction advances to the Global South, we are fast-tracking innovations like 3D home printing that can be a powerful tool toward ending homelessness.” With humanity prioritized over profit margins, millions, even billions, of people can escape survival-mode living.
Eventually, New Story was able to create the Vulcan II, a gantry-style printer on rails that extrudes a proprietary cementitious-based material, dubbed “Lavacrete,” layer by layer. It is designed to work under constraints commonly found in rural areas, such as power unpredictability, excessive rainfall, and flooding on construction sites. All home finishes are completed using traditional construction techniques. As the first printer of its kind, Vulcan II will begin tackling housing shortages for vulnerable populations starting in the remote town of Tabasco, Mexico. After approximately a year and a half of planning, New Story and ICON completed the first two printed homes on-site of the first planned printed community, which will include 50 3D printed homes.
Funding for the non-profit comprises a two-tier system with a transparency-first platform. The “100% Promise” allows public donors to be completely confident in how their funds are used—every penny donated is used exclusively for homebuilding costs. This group of donors is called “The Neighborhood,” while those who support New Story’s operational costs are referred to as “The Builders.” This model allows New Story donors to know exactly where their investment is going and who it is specifically benefiting.
The rising issue of homelessness is evident around the world, though its presence in the United States continues to be more difficult to deny. “One recent study, for example,” recounts YaleGlobal Online, “found that nowhere in the United States can someone who works 40 hours a week at the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour afford a one-bedroom apartment at fair market rent. To afford a one-bedroom apartment at the
Soon, New Story’s “transparency dashboards” will also show donors exactly where and when Rent Relief funds are deployed. Once donations are distributed, New Story sends donors more information about the specific family their money supports. New Story’s objective is ambitious, arguably impossible. Yet they have sought the support, developed the tools, and leveraged the appropriate resources to make the impossible inevitably possible—and possibility is, above all else, hope. Everyone can provide hope and help end survival-mode living. Visit www.newstorycharity.org/the-neighborhood to give the gift of home.

here’s something invigorating about the fresh scent of evergreens at this time of year. The real thing is easy to find locally, whether it be from the grocery store or cut from your backyard, but it’s also a synch to pull out your tried-and-true faux garlands from storage. Whatever your preference, evergreens usher in the holiday season with undeniable crispness. Use them in the usual places and try to find ways to sprinkle them throughout your home in unconventional spots, that still get high traffic, for maximum impact. As that chill settles into the air, I cannot wait to layer up and embrace sweater weather. Chunky knits can be as festive as they are functional. Let your knitted throws take the spotlight when styling living spaces—they beg to be showcased in all their intricate glory just as much as they wish to be wrapped around those snuggled up on the sofa. Sprinkling oversized ornaments atop folded blankets will give them even more intent. Though stockings are traditionally hung by the chimney with care, not everyone has a fireplace. I love the opportunity to hang stockings in unexpected places, as the little gifts they hold are some of my favorite items to give to friends. Repurpose a coatrack or a set of functional knobs as makeshift stocking holders. For presents, brown paper packages tied up with string…and greens! Let sprigs of needles, pinecones, and frosted forest flowers adorn your wrapping. The pine hues will shine against natural craft paper—layer with sheet music for that added touch of whimsy. Remember: it’s what’s inside that counts, but presentation is everything, and with the extra time we have this holiday season, we might as well go all-out with the details!

HOPE F O R T H E H O L I D AY S
Managing Editor Lauren Barisic Photographer Ellie Koleen Hair Robert Sandoval Makeup Emily Dudley
Hope, home, and humanity are innately intertwined—Catherine Jameson understands this on an intimate level. As the mother of a son who defeated childhood lymphoma, her insight concerning the parallels between cancer families and current coronavirus limitations reflects the bigger picture—that is, how our individual worlds fit within the universe as a whole. Taking this in heed, her heart for others continues to touch California’s Central Valley in numerous ways.
C
atherine’s volunteerism journey began shortly before she permanently moved back to California. “I have lived kind of half on the East Coast, half on the West Coast for my life,” the Massachusetts native explains. When she was a child, her parents moved the family out to Fresno. Catherine eventually left the Golden State for New York City, where she lived throughout her twenties. “I was just about to join the Junior League of New York when I met my husband [Michael] in Fresno,” she reminisces. Catherine moved back to the Valley in 1989—the couple has been married now for 31 years. Since her initiation into The Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) in the Big Apple was cut short, “I joined the Junior League of Fresno here,” recalls Catherine. She volunteered briefly for a women’s organization while living in NYC. “But really, the start of my volunteerism was with Junior League.” “The first few years, I could really go gung-ho,” says Catherine about the time before she had her twins, son Hunter and daughter Chandler, in 1993. “I was on numerous committees.” She marveled at the caliber of women in Junior League. It was there that she met Rita Gladding, among other outstanding community leaders, who became long-time
friends. “It was so inspiring, and causes you to rise to a higher level,” all of which is based in training. This gave Catherine a foundation for decades of servitude. “I worked my way up,” she says, adding that she was eventually named Junior League of Fresno’s president in 2000-2001, culminating 11 years of service. “The year I was president, I got to go to New York City,” the place where her volunteer journey began, “because it was also the 100th anniversary of The Association of Junior Leagues International.” She truly brought her presidency full circle. “Maya Angelou was one of the guest speakers, and Gloria Steinem—it was amazing! So that was kind of the coup de grâce of the whole experience—being able to go to that wonderful AJLI conference in New York City.” On paper, that final Junior League year was obviously a landmark for Catherine. But there was much more going on behind the scenes. “Talk about a rough year,” Catherine begins. “While as president, the big, final year in Junior League, my dad got lung and liver cancer and passed away at the end of November of 2000, right around Thanksgiving,” about halfway through her presidency, which ended in June 2001. “Then Hunter was diagnosed in September with cancer,” a few months later.
Hunter’s diagnosis came out of left field. The eight-year-old “had a T-cell lymphoma that was so aggressive that it was doubling in size every 24 hours, and it was in his chest and it was crushing his aorta and his lungs,” recounts Catherine. Had she not brought him to Valley Children’s Hospital then, her son would have gone into cardiac arrest between two and 10 days later, and likely would have passed away due to a tumor the size of a grapefruit in his little chest. “That was September 7th, which was actually my grandmother’s birthday who I was very close to and I always say she was his angel from that day, watching over him,” remembers Catherine fondly. “Days later, 9/11 happened in New York, where I had lived for almost 10 years and had tons of friends and everything there—it just felt like the world was crumbling.”
S
everal treatment plans were proposed for the little boy, so the Jamesons wanted a second opinion on which one to choose before proceeding. But because of the flying restrictions that had immediately gone into effect, the family couldn’t fly Hunter anywhere to get that second opinion. Catherine was at a loss over which course of action to select—she turned to the counsel of the wonderful doctors at Valley Children’s and relied on the immense research done by numerous close friends and relatives on Hunter’s behalf. Despite the overwhelming nature of what needed to be settled, they decided to send Hunter’s records to The University of Texas’ MD Anderson Cancer Center for review. To Catherine’s relief, the panel of doctors there recommend the same exact treatment plan that Valley Children’s was advocating. The fact that one of the top hospitals in the country said that Valley Children’s plan was what they would do was extremely encouraging to her. Just before Catherine’s father passed in 2000, the Jamesons bought the home they still reside in. “There’s our home away from home!” exclaims Catherine. “You can literally see Valley Children’s out my backyard, across the bluffs.” Though subtle, it is a constant reminder of the blessing the hospital has been in
her family’s life. “I can’t advocate enough for Valley Children’s Hospital having that kind of a facility here in the Valley. We’re just very, very blessed.”
E
ven after treatment, patients are very closely monitored. “Going through that experience, you really do see the faith of God in people,” Catherine says, thinking affectionately of the wonderful teachers, medical professionals, family, friends, and even unfamiliar persons who had surrounded them with unwavering support during the most difficult time of her life. She recollects being at Valley Children’s on Halloween with Hunter, who was bummed about not being able to go out trick-or-treating with his friends, and the kindness of strangers who chose to spend their evening at the hospital, sharing treats and stories of encouragement. “I really thought to myself, ‘If we get through this, we’re going to pay this forward,’ because it meant so much to just have that daily dose of hope. Hope is everything when you are going through something like that.” Throughout Hunter’s treatment, Catherine drew encouragement from inspiring quotes. One by Napoleon Bonaparte particularly hit home: “Courage is like love; it must have hope for nourishment.” “You’ve got to have a lot of courage going through a cancer diagnosis, really any kind of adversity in life,” imparts Catherine, “and hope is the nourishment for courage. It really makes you get through on a daily or even hourly basis—sometimes, just that little bit of hope that someone brings to you, in whatever way, is key … that’s really why we ended up calling it Hunter’s Hope International Foundation (HHIF).” Before Hunter’s diagnosis, Catherine had no direct affiliation with Valley Children’s Hospital. The Madera location was a relatively new facility back then— her children were actually born at the old hospital off of Shields Avenue in Fresno. Besides attending fundraisers and events at the new healthcare center, she remembers going to a luncheon for the Central California Blood Center about Camp Sunshine Dreams—a program for Valley Children’s oncology patients. It was Catherine’s job to take notes and report back to the Junior League. “Who knew that just a couple of years later my son

would be [there].” Though Hunter couldn’t attend the camp because of last minute complications, hearing all about it prepared Catherine, in a way, she says.
R
eferring to COVID-19, “There’s something that I find very interesting about today’s world and what we went through,” Catherine shares. “Everybody has to be on lockdown. People can’t go to restaurants and you can’t see your friends. That is the life of families that have a child with cancer every day! That’s nothing new! We’d have complete lockdown,” she recalls. “We couldn’t see people. I find it amazing how everybody is complaining … go to Valley Children’s and see the countless kids that can’t do any of this stuff for years!” Catherine says. For years, their lives had been focused around getting Hunter well—when he was on the up-and-up, it was time to pay it forward. Catherine’s first entrée back into volunteerism was with the Central Valley Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, a partner affiliated with Valley Children’s, who had reached out to the Jamesons. For the next few years, she and her family actively participated with them, raising awareness and encouraging involvement. Catherine has even chaired the committee for the Man & Woman of the Year campaign for two years. Yet, at the same time, little by little, they were becoming more involved with Valley Children’s directly, taking treats to the hospital on Halloween and delivering gifts to inpatient children during the holiday season. “Hunter wanted to reach out to other kids,” she says, adding that he wanted to be an inspiration to them. So, in 2013, Hunter’s Hope International Foundation was established, with Hunter as president and Catherine the CFO, while her husband Michael and close friend Rita Gladding served as the founding board members.
even while current social distancing restrictions are in place. “We’re not huge, but we have never had to turn down an application,” for assistance. After seven years of dedicated service, between $90K and $100K has been raised through Hunter’s Hope International Foundation. Countless moments of Catherine’s life seem to have foreshadowed what was to lie ahead, allowing them to come full circle. That memorable first Halloween inspired HHIF’s annual Hunter’s Hope Halloween Bash Fundraiser, which is held during their Fall Fund Drive from October through December. Hunter now lives in Washington DC, where he attends Georgetown University (for his Master’s in Applied Intelligence) and works for the United States Department of Justice, yet he still chimes in virtually for grant giftings and visits home during the holidays to support foundation events, which he actively participates in even while living on the other side of the country. Chandler now serves as the Development Manager for California Health Sciences University, but immediately after graduating from California State University, Fresno, she was recruited by the Central Valley Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as a campaign manager—yet another full-circle moment for the Jamesons. “We were involved with them as a patient, then as a volunteer, then as a paid employee in the family!” Catherine explains. “Working with that mission just meant so much—seeing her in that role and giving it her all.” Chandler helped the Student of the Year campaigns grow to the high-grossing levels they are at now. “But it’s totally too timeintensive when you have a little child,” she says, referring to Chandler’s daughter Chloe Grace. “She is the joy of our lives!” Catherine gushes. Since Chandler went back to work, Catherine watches her six-year-old granddaughter while helping with remote kindergarten lessons.

The mission of HHIF has been “to bring ‘hope & help’ to pediatric oncology patients and their families by providing grants to improve and enhance their quality of life while undergoing cancer treatment, chemotherapy and recovery” since its founding. “Hope comes in many forms, and it can be for a minute or a year, but it’s so important to do as much as possible,” Catherine professes. “The poverty that we’ve seen … it’s really been an eye-opener about the needs in our community,” she adds.
ith the holiday season upon us, this year will, hopefully, get to be a time of renewal and reset, where we get to value our traditions a little bit differently, understand why family is so imperative, and know why having these rituals is so critical for all of us. “Just really spending time with the people you love,” Catherine reinforces. “My husband and I both have birthdays in December, so we all like doing a lot of festive things with different friends and just getting together to celebrate at that time of year,” she shares, adding that gatherings will be a bit different this year.
“This is what we need to do … there’s nothing greater to me than seeing the look on somebody’s face, of bringing that hope and help, because I’ve been there—I know what it feels like.” Because of COVID-19, it is now more difficult to have contact with the families that HHIF supports, but that doesn’t stop Catherine from finding a way to reach them, even at a distance. Over 160 grants have been bequeathed through HHIF and Catherine has managed to continue surpassing that landmark number,
“Our traditions are food, food, and more food!” Catherine laughs. There’s also “the holiday baking of cookies. Of course, we go to church for Christmas Eve.” Catherine loves to officially commence the holiday season the day after Thanksgiving by going on a fun trip. “I like to kick off the holidays in a big city. I think that’s because having been in New York all those years and having lived in Massachusetts,” where the seasons are so heartily embraced. “For many years, Chandler and I would
have a Christmas tea party with our friends, like a mother/daughter thing— we’ve continued that, but we do it on Valentine’s Day with Chloe now,” beams Catherine. Nowadays, holidays largely revolve around the joy of seeing Catherine’s granddaughter enjoy Christmas traditions. “We make many different cookies,” she chuckles. Yet, the needs of Valley Children’s patients remain, even throughout the holidays—gifts and grants from Hunter’s Hope International Foundation are distributed year-round. “For many years, we’ve been running around trying to get ‘that one thing’ that one of our Hunter’s Hope kids wants!” Catherine says of their Christmas shopping. “My husband and Hunter have stood in those long lines many times, waiting.”

atherine has clearly planted the advocacy seed in her children. Inspired by her kind heart, tried by her son’s diagnosis, and reinforced by her family’s involvement, advocacy is an absolutely essential component of betterment— especially for childhood cancer research. “People in general need to realize your voice counts. Your vote counts. That phone call counts … what have you got to lose? All you can do is ask. If you don’t ask, you’ll never know. And there’s a lot of people out there that are willing to help!” But it starts with us as individuals, she emphasizes. “This too shall pass. This isn’t going to go on forever. But I really think we all need to come together and do whatever we can to have it be over sooner than later,” Catherine says of 2020. “I feel hopeful about 2021 because people have been through so much this year—people that didn’t get it before are getting it now. Between sickness, finances, civil unrest, and racial turmoil—we got hit with all of it in 2020, and now it’s time to, piece by piece, try and understand and figure out how we can make it better, because it depends on all of us. A lot of people are relying on others to make the world better, when it really is within all of us to make it better.” Catherine Jameson isn’t expecting someone else to do this work—she’s getting out there and being the change she wishes to see in this world.

or many of us, 2020 has been a year of unpredictability, trepidation, and angst. Driveby birthday parties, wearing a mask in public, and watching my children schooled through a screen is what I will remember most about this year. Amidst our new normal, I yearn for things to go back to the way they were. I can’t wait for the day I can give my best friend a hug or have my big Armenian family in our home to celebrate a joyous occasion together. As I am overcome with a deep sense of nostalgia, I realize it is time to unpack those cheesy mismatched ornaments, jingle bells, and Grandma’s festive napkins that I swore I would keep buried in my drawer for eternity. Holiday décor has become anything but traditional in recent years. Images of Kylie Jenner’s pink Christmas tree flood my Instagram feed every year, reminding me just how far we have diverged from traditional holiday colors. This year, why not bring back the time-honored crimson and emerald hues of our past? As for the holiday tree, let’s make it a real one. It is a cinch to put up my artificial tree every year, plug it in, and…viola! Not this year, though. The tangled lines and whimsical character of the real thing is something I’m not willing to forego. Begin new traditions…or continue old ones. Every year, my kids receive an individualized ornament that represents a significant event or activity in their life. As each ornament is unwrapped, they revel in the year’s memories. Finally, bring out the old hand-me-downs. My grandmother gave me a set of Christmas napkins that I rarely use but can never part with. In 2020, these hand-me-downs will take center stage at all of our holiday meals, just as it was at my grandmother’s many years ago.

Eye-popping shades are shaking up fashion this holiday season. Regal tones are saturating closets and beaming brightly against the coldweather blues. These impactful hues work well with neutrals and set the stage for winter wonderland accessory glitz.
