LETTER from the

I

EDITOR

get nostalgic every September. Six years ago, CVLUX was merely a dream, and here we are going into our seventh year. Over the past years, Donna and I have met so many amazing people who have left an indelible mark on our lives and our company.

When I look back at the first few editions of CVLUX, I see how much the magazine has grown. We are constantly adding editors and contributors to elevate the content of each edition. Our circulation continues to grow and I am pleased to announce that we have cultivated several new newsstand distribution locations for the fall, expanding our readership and reach for our advertisers. Donna and I are so happy that all of you have chosen to be part of our journey. Without the support of the community, none of this would have ever been possible. Each day is a celebration for us, and it warms our hearts to look back and think that we’ve accomplished something that no one else in the Central Valley has ever done before. Finally, it is time for the Luxury Awards! As always, this year’s list recognizes the top businesses and individuals who are offering unparalleled service to our community. I encourage you to take the time to log on to www.cvlux.com and cast your vote. A portion of the event’s proceeds will benefit Make-A-Wish® Northeastern & Central California and Northern Nevada. Let’s make this party one for the record books— keep an eye on social media for all the latest 2020 Luxury Awards news and updates. Take a little time, stop what you are doing, and thumb through the pages of this Sep|Oct Edition—who knows what you might discover. Cheers,

David

EXTREMELY GR ATEFUL De Young Properties is Building the Dream Managing Editor Lauren Barisic Photos Courtesy of De Young Properties

F

ans rejoiced at the announcement that Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (EMHE) was being rebooted. Over the summer, Central Valley natives witnessed the 93619 zip get some Extreme attention, having been selected for the comeback’s first episode. While it’s apparent that Americans love a great home and garden redo, EMHE does it in a way that unites aesthetics with service—a value both the show and De Young Properties holds dear; it’s all about the bigger picture. The EMHE production team begins with a nationwide family search. When they heard De Young Properties was interested in being a builder again for the show (they did the Fresno episode 10 years ago), the team narrowed their efforts to the greater Fresno area. Nominations for hundreds of families were received, but several families in Clovis stood out. “The City of Clovis was interested in having the show come to their community, and then it fell quickly into place with one particular Clovis family—the Reeders,” mentioned Brady Connell, Executive Producer of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Local CAL FIRE captain Nick Reeder lost his wife, Amanda, just an hour after giving birth to their twin daughters in April of 2018. This left Nick to raise their newborn twins, Kaia and Kelce, and their eldest daughter, Layla, on his own. While figuring out how to move forward without his wife, Nick’s mother, Jeanine, moved into the 900-square-foot apartment to assist with the girls. Imagine their surprise “when Nick and his family were greeted by Jesse Tyler Ferguson, show designers, De Young Properties, and a team of volunteers ready to build the Reeder family’s new home!” on July 30th, exclaimed Ryan De Young, President of De Young Properties. A new cast, including host Jesse Tyler Ferguson and designers Carrie Locklyn, Darren Keefe, and Breegan Jane, is the most obvious difference from the original series, but EMHE is also shifting its emphasis slightly. “As an HGTV show, the series will have more focus on design and process, as well as making sure the home design is just right for each family,” elaborated Brady. “De Young Properties is a long-time friend of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. They are part of the family!” Brady remarked, referring to the home they built a decade ago. “Their Fresno build in 2009 was a huge success, so when the reboot was ordered, we knew right away that the De Young family would be our first call.” Preparations for an Extreme build are, well, extreme. “The builder for any episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition works closely with the design, build, production, and location teams of the show,” explained Brady of the tremendous coordination efforts. “Essentially the television industry and the construction industry come together for one common goal. They work together for months to plan the 7-day build for the selected family.”

—34— SEP | OCT

Yet, “this home was built in just six days,” beating even the show goal, Ryan proclaimed. “What normally takes a week is condensed to one hour. Normally each trade gets to work in the home by themselves but in this case, we had multiple trades working at the same time—around the clock. It is truly incredible what you can accomplish when everyone is working together.” Considering that construction of a new home typically takes several months, this speaks volumes to the focus of the De Young Properties team and its trade partners. The Reeder family’s new home is located in The Highlands by De Young and features one of their newest floorplans. In line with the emphasis on practicality, “The show’s design team worked hard to create a home that will allow Nick, his three daughters, and his mother to have more space and live comfortably, while also giving them a fresh start.” Ryan further described, “In addition, the new home is a Zero Energy home, meaning it is designed to produce as much clean energy as the home consumes annually, resulting in lower energy bills—helpful savings potential for the single-income family.” Build It Green even certified the home GreenPoint Rated, recognizing high performance in its five qualifying categories: Community, Energy Efficiency, Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and Health, Resource Conservation, and Water Conservation. De Young Properties’ partnership with EMHE is a reflection of their dedication to the community they serve. “De Young Properties made the commitment to volunteer our time to help a local family with this life-changing effort,” said Ryan. “With that, we simply could not have completed this without the donations and support of over 2,000 local volunteers, hundreds of trade partners and our community. The construction of the new De Young home was the culmination of a united effort that saw the generous spirit of our community in full force.” That outpour of support was evident the day the Reeder family home was presented to the press. Community leaders, public servants, government representatives, and small business owners came out to display their support through certificates of recognition and donations of services, including: free hair services for the next six months for the whole family

(grandma included), as well as preschool and gym tuitions gifted and waived (one through kindergarten, another until 12 years of age) for the girls. In all, including the announcement that more than $20,000 had been raised in cash gifts for the Reeders, the added donations far exceed the $100,000 mark. Nick was overwhelmed with appreciation when he addressed the team. “It’s been quite the challenge, but I can see the puzzle pieces being put back together. This is definitely one of those pieces that’s going to help … my girls here. It’s been a whirlwind of a week, let me tell ya, but, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you so much.” Finding a new normal is never easy, but with so much generosity and the security of a safe home, the Reeders are well on their way to finding some semblance of normalcy. This Central Valley builder has a long history of giving back. “For nearly 45 years, De Young Properties has been committed to supporting organizations, causes, and endeavors that make a difference in our community through monetary donations and the donation of their time, labor, and counsel.” Ryan revealed. “In addition, we have served as the major donor and builder of twelve St. Jude Dream Homes, raising over $11.6 million to benefit the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This year, De Young Properties will build and donate our thirteenth home in hopes of raising another $1,000,000.” “The opportunity to provide the Reeder family a chance for a fresh start through the combined efforts of our community, trade partners, volunteers and the EMHE team is truly inspiring,” reflected Ryan. “And my other favorite part of this experience would have to be the incredible people you meet along the way, from the volunteers in our community to the EMHE team. It is truly a neighbor-helping-neighbor life-changing experience for everyone involved.” Keep an eye out for the Reeder family’s De Young Properties home when Extreme Makeover: Home Edition goes live again. While the specific episode dates have not yet been announced, HGTV expects the series to begin airing in early 2020.

SHAKE +STIR

HOSTED AT MANHATTAN STEAKHOUSE & BAR Managing Editor Lauren Barisic Photographer Don Dizon

—38— SEP | OCT

A

t the Manhattan Steakhouse & Bar, “There’re no strangers here—just a friend we haven’t met, yet!” proclaimed owners Dave and Karyn Milutinovich as Dina Juve, Anaheed Tatarian, Tami Serpa, Ashley Hyatt, and Lannea Woods took their seats with CVLUX’s Donna Ensom for Shake+Stir’s fourteenth edition. A delicious surprise awaited the group after four (okay, five) cocktails, six incredible dishes, and desserts galore. The most outrageous stories about dating and children started to fly early on, leading this party to last twice as long as usual! The restaurant is truly a partnership between the husband and wife team. “My wife is a fabulous partner up front,” Dave mused of Karyn. “She has a talent for making everyone who comes through our doors feel special. I’m in the back!” He’s big on details (like logos on the plates, glasses, and napkins), making the Manhattan stand out for its fine points. Since its establishment in 1992, the Manhattan has been tucked in the southeastern corner of Fresno’s Bullard and West Avenues. Dave recalled that he and his brother, both restaurateurs, wanted to do a restaurant together with their wives. Both couples loved New York, hence where the name “Manhattan” came from. A few years later, Dave and Karyn bought the restaurant from their partners and updated the name to Manhattan Steakhouse & Bar as the popularity of steakhouses increased. The couple relishes being a multi-generation establishment—patrons who have been coming here since they opened have instilled that dining tradition in their own children. Dave and Karyn’s keen sense for

maintaining relevance instigated a slew of renovations and updates a few years back. New lighting fixtures and tile flooring were added, grayscale vintage photos line the walls, and black and white checkered tablecloths bring an element of informality that juxtaposes the atmosphere splendidly. Don’t fret—the trademark Manhattan skyline mural along the back wall of the restaurant and the expansive mirror behind the bar remain. If your party might not fit in the main dining room (where dinner is served Monday through Saturday starting at 5 o’clock), banquet rooms are available: the Park Avenue Room offers seating to 85, while the Carnegie Room seats up to 40. Meet your friends for Happy Hour in the lounge from 4 p.m. to 6:30 (shout-out to $5 Tito’s Thursdays!), and remember that on Fridays and Saturdays hours are extended from 10 to midnight. The Milutinoviches dislike the term “fine dining” because of the pretentiousness it implies. “We like to say ‘fun dining’ instead,” Dave explained. Their daughters helped develop the menu, which changes frequently and features upscale yet familiar fare with a twist. “We try to incorporate a young vibe,” which is evident from the décor to the food selection—prepare to be blown away by everything placed on your table. Ideal for fall, the Apple Manhattan features Jim Beam Apple bourbon, sweet and dry vermouths, and a Filthy Black Cherry. “The dark cherry is a nice touch,” Ashley admired. It’s the epitome of a “smooth sipper.” Presentation alone of the Vine-Ripened Tomato Stack will have your mouth watering… A thick slice of tomato supports thinly sliced avocado and a bay shrimp nest with diced red onions. Creamy bleu cheese dressing

—39— SEP | OCT

and crumbles spill over it all, securing the jumbo prawn on top. “The combination of avocado, onion, and baby shrimp reminds me of ceviche, but this is much fancier and fresher!” related Anaheed. If you’re an sushi/poke fan, be sure to order the Ahi Tartare. Tossed in sesame vinaigrette, it is served in a bowl with wakame salad, avocado, and radish. Nori chips line the perimeter, making the appetizer an interactive experience unlike the traditional pre-dinner tuna snack. Good any time of year (or day), the Tangerine Cosmopolitan is a blend of Grey Goose L’Orange vodka, triple sec, cranberry and orange juices, and sweet and sour. “I don’t usually go for Cosmos—this one is refreshingly citrusy, but you get a kick from the alcohol,” relished Anaheed. “And you wouldn’t know there’s cran in there—it’s basically a sophisticated screwdriver.” Beet Salad is “One of my favorite salads to eat,” Ashley admitted, “and I love seeing such a different version.” Manhattan’s is certainly not the norm. Featuring both golden and red beets with red onion, citrus supremes, and a wedge of fried goat cheese, it is arranged atop spinach with a light vinaigrette. The Honey Old-Fashioned cocktail uses Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey as its base with orange bitters, a splash of soda, sugar, plus a Filthy Black Cherry and an orange wedge garnish. “I don’t like whiskey, but this I’d come in and order,” Tami admitted. Donna concurred, “The orange bitters make it lighter.”

Manhattan’s New York Roquefort highlights a generous spoonful of melted bleu cheese, but this ain’t your typical steak and potatoes dish... The Milutinoviches serve this cut with the butteriest, most golden hash brown you’ll ever lay eyes on—it’s one of their signatures. Dina called it “delightful. Not too heavy. I only eat cheese on occasion and I would have the cheese again on this dish, especially if you do not have an allergy or intolerance to dairy.” With not one but two 4-once filets set atop an artichoke bottom, the Tournedoes Monterey might be the most creative marriage of favorites from Manhattan. Served with mashed potatoes, al dente veggies, and topped with mushroom caps and béarnaise sauce, Tami “loved the way it was prepared,” and you will, too. Classic and strong, “The Lemon Drop cocktail was absolutely perfect,” Dina reflected. A combination of Absolut Citron vodka, triple sec, Monin Lemon Syrup, and sweet and sour, it is served in a chilled glass. “I wanted to enjoy it exactly as they make it, but without me even asking they asked if I wanted sugar on the rim or not. So thoughtful.” Pressed with a pistachio crust and oven baked with pistachio-lime butter, the Pistachio Crusted Halibut will make you feel transported to the Central Coast. “It’s simply wonderful on the outside, it’s cooked perfectly,” Lannea described, “and it’s so fresh that I feel like I’m at the ocean!’ Dave and Karyn are experts at making their patrons beg for a reason to stay—enter the dessert list: there are approximately 10 slices and creamy things to choose from, in addition to a selection of floats and three sweet cocktails. The ladies were so excited at the prospects that they asked CVLUX’s Editor in Chief David Manning about ordering a few to share—everyone selected one (a Shake+Stir first!) and all proceeded to be passed back and forth around the table. Surprise! David insisted on Park Avenues all around, too. Liquid ice cream, Baileys Original Irish Cream, Kahlúa, and Chambord are blended with ice into a perfectly pink adult milkshake with whipped cream filling the remainder of the glass. “I’m in love!” Lannea couldn’t help but exclaim. “Stir it up! It’s even better when you mix the whipped cream in,” Ashley divulged. Donna was right when she declared it the fan-favorite drink of the evening—way to save the best for last. The Milutinoviches’ hospitality is as renowned as their food and drinks. Rumor has it that the Manhattan is already almost fully booked for the holiday season party scene, but don’t let that keep you from coming in to experience big city dining in small town Fresno. Remember: at the Manhattan, “It’s always nicer when you’re here!”

High Profile Bit by Bitwise Jake Soberal

Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder, Bitwise Industries Features Editor Ann T. Sullivan Whitehurst Managing Editor Lauren Barisic Photographer Gordon Howell

P

icture yourself driving the 41 through Downtown Fresno. Ever wondered what that rainbow ombre honeycomb building is all about? It’s The Bitwise Hive—one of four Fresno Campus locations that facilitate Bitwise Industries.

Founded in 2013, Bitwise Industries is the brainchild of Jake Soberal and his business partner Irma L. Olguin, Jr. Irma was Jake’s client; he her IP attorney. In 2012, while meeting over drinks in Jake’s Tower District home, an “aha” moment inspired the two to build a company that fostered Fresno’s tech industry and potential, thus using it as economic leverage to help remake and rebuild the Central Valley’s largest city. A year later, Bitwise was born. Fresno’s Mural District was simultaneously established with the debut of The Bitwise Hive’s 360-degree honeycomb mural on the 1st of July, 2013—that was a major game-changer for the revitalization of Downtown Fresno, but it was only the beginning of Bitwise. The company’s mission is simple yet ambitious: “Bitwise is a tech ecosystem, activating human potential to elevate underdog cities around the country.” Fresno is that biome’s nucleus. Implementation of said objective is being sustained, supported, and accomplished through three avenues: education, place, and industry—what they call the “technological tidal wave” because of the domino-like reaction these components have in the tech industry, each essential to knocking over the next and causing a chain reaction.

—44— SEP | OCT

“Bitwise is a tech ecosystem, activating human potential to elevate underdog cities around the country.” Geekwise Academy teaches people to code. Reaching to Fresno County’s outlying communities, the Academy’s aim is focused on building “onramps” for the marginalized groups who are traditionally left out of the tech industry because they may have fewer opportunities to access higher education. Many students speak Spanish primarily. Jake explained, “We are aiming right at the language barrier, teaching courses in Spanish to transcend that language barrier in rural communities.” Classes meet twice a week (at the Bitwise South Stadium location) for six week durations, culminating in 36 hours of instruction for a mere $250—a fraction of the cost traditional educational institutions charge. More than 4,000 people have now gone on to create technology, start companies, and develop apps to answer the challenges of our modern world through this accelerated learning program. Bitwise’s commercial real estate ventures provide a place to call home for aspiring technologists, fast-growing technology companies, and many mission-aligned enterprises, whom often hire out of Geekwise Academy. Spaces are diverse—a selection of tenant offices allow for a permanent place of business, while Hashtag Collaborative Workspace can be rented out by the day or month. Fostering a physical home for small businesses contributes to the ongoing revitalization efforts of Fresno’s downtown and the cities where Bitwise will expand, as the company is known to restore buildings that could use a little TLC.

As Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Bitwise Industries, Jake leads the company by rallying the army behind Bitwise to cast his vision into reality through strategic initiatives and organizational efforts. While growing up to be President of the United States hasn’t come to fruition yet, Jake’s desire to do something big and meaningful is fully fledged and Fresno is reaping those benefits first. Valley residents are known to be boomerangers—Jake is another such example, albeit a transplant. Born in Los Angeles, his family moved to Clovis when he was in middle school. Athletic, he loved sports and team exercises, and is still a runner. “I had a fortunate upbringing,” Jake recalled, which wasn’t taken for granted. But he divulged that breaking both hips in his youth promoted some perspective that helped him value ability and time in a way he hadn’t before. As a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Jake took up rowing, thriving in and savoring the high degree of teamwork it required—a mentality he nurtures in Bitwise. Having earned a dual degree in history and political science there, in addition to a JD from Western State College of Law, Jake returned to Fresno where he practiced intellectual property law at Walter & Wilhelm Law Group. It was during that time he met Irma—obviously that worked out well!

Directly in line with it’s tech-driven vision, Bitwise’s portfolio of fastgrowing custom software and SaaS companies (namely Ordrslip, 6 Degrees Software, My Design Deals, and LoopdIn), birthed of it’s own Shift3 Technologies, hires the best of the best from its own Geekwise Academy, too, allowing the corporation to be a direct player in proving that it is possible to build top-flight companies with extraordinary technology in unexpected places—even more impressive when you factor in that those companies are comprised of nontraditional, diverse talent sourced from regional pulls.

Jake and his wife Sarah (also a Clovis native) exemplify what it means to be Fresno-proud. The couple lives in the Tower District, where they relish being able to walk to dinner with their three children (two girls and a boy) while passing friendly neighbors. Like many Valley families, they love traveling together, particularly to the California coast and Sierra Nevada mountains, since the kids are still young enough to keep the family “carbound” as Jake put it. Sarah and he took the kids to Fort Bragg over the summer, accomplishing Jake’s most recent goal: “I took a month off consecutively for the first time since starting Bitwise!” But he isn’t slowing down.

Today, the Fresno Campus is served through four locations: The Bitwise Hive (40,000+ square feet of indoor/outdoor work and warehouse space), Bitwise South Stadium (housing over 100 companies and more than 1,000 professionals), Bitwise State Center Warehouse (a collaborative revival transformation scheduled to open in 2020), and Bitwise | 41 (boasting multi-purposeful space with unparalleled views of Downtown Fresno). Southern expansion was announced this past June, with hopes that the Bakersfield Campus will be a significant presence there within the next couple years.

Fresno has much to offer, and Jake Soberal is doing everything in his power to guarantee Bitwise does its part to ensure the city reaches its potential. That is, transcending the challenges of finding place and creating space (psychologically and physically), then overcoming language barriers, cultural hurdles, demographic struggles, stereotype strains, all the difficulties that prevent people from exercising their abilities in order to attain success. With his leadership, the Bitwise vision will be embedded in Fresno’s DNA as it strides toward empowered improvement via technology.

A Closer Look:

AirSculpt

®

Beauty Editor Jessica McCafferty

“If you can pinch it, we can take it.” When it comes to cosmetic surgeries, this phrase almost sounds too good to be true. But what if we told you there is an option exactly like this and more? Enter AirSculpt®—the body-contouring phenomenon taking over Hollywood. Created by celebrity plastic surgeon Dr. Aaron Rollins of Elite Body Sculpture (www.elitebodysculpture.com), this patented, precision-engineered technology is a minimally invasive, virtually painless alternative to traditional fat removal procedures. “We are removing unwanted fat through a freckle-sized hole cell by cell with no needle, no scalpel, and no stitches—and you’re awake the whole time,” explains Rollins. “It can remove any stubborn fat that does not respond to diet and exercise, whether a few tablespoons or over a gallon.” Many patients describe the discomfort as equivalent to a deep tissue massage (patients are just prescribed a single Xanax to help them relax). Rollins’ technology also tightens your skin in addition to removing fat for results that appear natural, never fake or uneven. With glowing patient testimonials and even more incredible before and after photos (head over to @elitebodysculpture on Instagram—you won’t be disappointed), it is no surprise women and men are travelling all across the U.S. to have an AirSculpt® session done at one of their nine clinics.

it is truly minimally invasive, unlike traditional liposuction…which scrapes away unwanted fat with a tube resembling a cheese grater. Yikes!

Don’t get this confused with your mama’s liposuction—it’s far from it.

And, it’s actually way more common than you think. Almost 18 million people underwent surgical and minimally invasive cosmetic procedures in 2018, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. That’s a number Dr. Rollins is taking a big bite into. The main difference between AirSculpt® and other procedures is that

“AirSculpt® allows you to start seeing results the same day as your procedure,” says Rollins. “There is little to no bruising, and you may return to work the next day.” In fact, the typical recovery time is less than 24 hours and many can resume normal activities 48 hours after, including exercise. “We frequently have patients who go out for dinner or head to an event on the same day.”

Right now, the procedure can be done on areas like the chin, abdomen, back, arms, and legs. Nicknamed by some as “lunchtime lipo,” a chin contouring procedure takes around 20 minutes, while a full abdomen can take just over an hour. And because the process is so gentle, the fat can be transferred and used in other body sculpting procedures like their Brazilian butt lift or Up A Cup™ breast enhancement. Even with this add-on, the whole experience is equivalent to a luxury spa visit, a far cry from old school options requiring general anesthesia. “The response has been just incredible, which is the most important part to us. There is no better feeling than helping someone feel like ‘themself’ again.” We couldn’t agree more, Dr. Rollins...we couldn’t agree more.

HEALTH IS WEALTH Health & Fitness Editor Dina Juve Photographer Alicia Nelson

—59— SEP | OCT

As a Deepak Chopra Certified Perfect Health Ayurveda Instructor, I’ve learned there are 5 key tips to obtaining the body you desire and living a full life. Like all good things, it requires hard work that only comes from within. It comes from a love for your self.

1. Think positive. Focus on all the things you’re grateful for. Are you holding grudges? When we get hurt it’s easy to take on the victim role. If you have past trauma, pain, recurring hurtful situations, talk to a professional. Until you deal with these issues, stop negative self-talk, or learn to give yourself a break, you won’t fully enjoy the gift of each day. Your body hears what you think, so take the time to forgive your past so you can fully enjoy your present. If you struggle with this, try this technique: write down 3 things you love about yourself every day. Take time to spend time by yourself. When you remove yourself from outside distractions, you give yourself the time to focus on what makes you happy, healthy, and loved. When we sit by ourselves, we find our true selves.

2. Keep good company. Who do you spend most of your time with? Do you feel happy and healthy around them? Or do you find yourself sad, mad, and irritated? Are they unkind to you or are you unkind to them? This is not healthy. Breaking up with unhealthy people that you love or have been longtime friends with can be hard, but you must set boundaries for your own well-being. Spend time with people that lift you up and you lift up. You cannot stop someone from being unhappy—that is their own work (show them Step 1!). We all have bad days, but feeling good, helpful, and positive should outweigh feeling drained. Make a commitment with friends and family to talk about positive events, take walks, make healthy meals, fill up each other’s souls with love, kindness, laughter, and fun.

3. Get your ZZZs in. During sleep, your body repairs muscles, organs, and cells. It clears waste from the brain, supports learning, and memory. With a good night’s sleep comes more productivity. When you don’t get enough sleep, your body produces the hunger-causing hormones: leptin and

ghrelin. I notice my clients that sleep more don’t struggle as much to maintain or lose weight. They’re more positive and upbeat, don’t fatigue as easily from workouts, enjoy work, and have a love for life. If you have a tough time sleeping, try to adopt a nighttime routine. Don’t drink caffeine after 3 p.m. Turn off all electronics one hour before bed. Drink chamomile tea. Darken the room and turn your clock away from you. You can also try these relaxation techniques: journaling worries or stressful thoughts to get them out of your head, put on calming music, meditate, stretch, or try different breathing techniques. An easy breathing technique I use is: breathe in through your nose for four counts and out your nose for four counts. Continue, focusing on your breath. Soon enough, you’ll be fast asleep!

4. Make exercises fun. Exercise comes natural to some, but to others (like me and some of my clients), it feels like we’re just going through the motions. Since I was diagnosed with arthritis at age six, it hurt to move. At age 21, I weighed 204 pounds and I had enough. I knew that it was up to me to make me feel better. Embarrassed to be seen exercising, I started doing videos in my living room. To start, I could only do 5-10 minutes a day. The negative voice in my head told me it would make me feel worse, but to my surprise, as I started losing weight, I felt so much better! At first it was hard, but once I got in the groove I had fun. It relieved stress, anxiety, and my confidence soared. I still suffered from chronic pain, but exercise changed my life. Now I help others transform their lives by transforming their bodies. Exercise is vital for longevity and overall mind and body wellness. Physical activity helps avoid developing certain diseases, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure. If you’re struggling to find something you love, try different things. Schedule time to move with friends. Make specific fitness goals and track them. Celebrate small victories. Try different forms of cardio 3-5 times a week. Then add strength-training exercises for all major muscle groups at least 2 times a week. Today, there are so many apps that can help you get enough exercise. Make sure you check with your doctor to decide what exercise is best for you.

—60— SEP | OCT

5. Be a picky eater. Food is my medicine. When you eat food that fuels your body well, you feel energized. Food is healing. I’m a firm believer that when it comes to a particular way of eating, we’re all different. We 100% control what we put in our mouths. So, choose wisely. Make sure to pick whole, real food. Try to avoid artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and chemicals. If you cannot pronounce it, don’t eat it! That doesn’t mean food has to be boring or bland. Some people do better with more animal protein, some with complex carbs, some vegetarian, vegan, et cetera. Vegetables and fruit help reduce the risk of many diseases, including high blood pressure and some cancers. Also high in fiber, they keep most people full longer and are rich in vitamins and minerals that help you feel energized. Low in fat and calories, they’re a good choice for people watching their weight. Fruit is a simple carbohydrate full of vitamins, antioxidants, and some with electrolytes. True, they contain carbohydrates, but

don’t leave them off your plate unless your doctor instructs you to. Complex carbohydrates are found in vegetables, peas, whole grains, and beans. They turn into glucose in the body and are used as energy. Complex carbs are digested slower than simple carbohydrates, which raise blood sugars quickly. Not all fats are bad for you, but should be eaten in moderation if you’re trying to lose weight. Some healthy fats are avocados, olive oil, salmon, eggs, nuts, flaxseeds, and nut butter. These aren’t trans fats, the type you find in high-fat cuts of meat and fried foods. Healthy fats help with digestion, trick your body to be happy and full, control blood sugar, power up your immune system, and foster better skin. Certain proteins have woundhealing benefits and can make you feel full longer. Like I said, food is medicine! You are the only you. You are worth all the money in the world. Treat your body, mind, and soul like it. Take care of yourself. Health is wealth!

JUMPSUIT BY ADOLFO DOMINGUEZ EARRINGS AND BELT BAG BY TERIA YABAR

There’s no shortage of Colombian stars in this world—the Central American country seems to be overflowing with beauty. So it should be no surprise to learn that the Colombian bombshell Nataly Correa was born in Cartagena.

A

s a little girl, Nataly dreamed of being a model. “From an early age, I felt admiration for this world of fashion and beauty. When I discovered that I had potential I went for it.” Her supportive parents allowed their daughter to give it a shot at the age of 12. She began her career as a youth model in one of the best agencies in the capitol “City of Eternal Spring,” Medellin. Great success followed her early modeling career, leading her to be represented by some of the most prominent firms in the country.

Nataly’s success persisted, leading to her being hired by many notable Colombian magazines. International and national proposals for television shows and major events followed, as offers emerged for her to work as an actress. “I moved to Madrid 16 years ago,” to pursue those dreams, Nataly recalled. And she has made Spain her home, since. With so much accomplishment under her belt, the Colombian model decided to take a break from her career to become a mom. “I have a beautiful family. I am married to a super man,” Nataly said of her husband. “He is very intelligent and I admire him so much. I could say that he is and will always be the perfect man for me. I say he’s like me but even more

successful, and I have Tarek and Philip, my kids, who are my reason for living and fighting every day. I also have a pet that is my other baby: a Boston terrier dog named India.” While Nataly considers her family her greatest success, she desires to “never stop working on myself and learning,” which has initiated both her modeling comeback and segue into the makeup industry. “I am finishing my own line of cosmetic beauty, for all those women that take care of themselves and that in spite of the years want to look more beautiful,” explained Nataly. Early off, she recalled that the best advice she received was to have her goals clear, “without letting anything influence me as the person I am, since this world is very demanding.” With so much to juggle, it’s impressive that Nataly manages to do it all. “I differentiate my professional life from the personal one, and I always keep my balance,” Nataly boasted. “I am a very happy and positive woman and I believe in my goals. I am very independent,” which allows her to “lead my life calmly both as a businesswoman and as a model.” Persistence and self-confidence are key for any entrepreneur, no matter the profession or where one is in life. But in Nataly’s world, “there is no age, there is attitude.” And eyelashes, perfume, lipstick, and twice-weekly full-body coconut oil masks for hair and skin help maintain that ideal.

THE BODY BUILDING KASEY & AMANDA KAHL, CO-OWNERS CLOVIS, CALIFORNIA

MOST REQUESTED NON-INVASIVE PROCEDURE? Our Sélene Sculpting device. The Sélene is state-of-the-art, combining thermal shock technology with CryoSculpting to first heat the fat cells then immediately freeze them away. Results from this treatment are often immediate and can be permanent! HOW DO YOU PROVIDE THE SAFEST ENVIRONMENT FOR YOUR PATIENTS? Safety is key. We have some of the newest technology in the Valley. Oftentimes we schedule consultations even for our most non-invasive treatments to ensure that specific treatments are the right choice for a client. With some therapies, a posttreatment wellness program is created to follow up and follow through with a client’s progress. KASEY KAHL DESCRIBE YOUR INSPIRATION My inspiration stems mostly from loss. From high school to this day, the opioid epidemic has taken a large toll on several friends of mine. I wanted to create a better alternative to pain management and relief. I dived into as much research as I could to open a wellness facility of the utmost, highest natural standard.

BODY DEL SOL MEDICAL SPA AYDE MENDIBLES, MBA, LE, LVN DIRECTOR OF SPA OPERATIONS FRESNO, CALIFORNIA

B

ody del Sol Medical Spa has developed a devoted following by helping our patients maintain and improve their skin and body health from head to toe. Our clinic offers the care of a physician with all of the comforts of a luxury medical spa. With a focus on value, integrity, experience, and quality, Body del Sol Medical Spa has become a top choice for non-invasive cosmetic treatments in Fresno and its surrounding areas.

WHY IS SKINCARE SO IMPORTANT? Our skin is the largest barrier against infection that we have! Keeping our skin healthy and moist keeps this barrier strong. A proper skincare routine, along with medical/professional grade products, also enhances and prolongs any skincare treatments you may have had, such as cosmetic injections or facials. MOST REQUESTED NON-EVASIVE PROCEDURES The top three most requested non-invasive procedures include botulinum toxin type A (Botox, Dysport, and Jeuveau—the NewTox), cosmetic fillers (Juvéderm/Versa/Restylane for volumizing lips, Voluma/Restylane Lyft for adding volume and lift to cheeks and hands), and mechanical exfoliation (SilkPeel DermalInfusionMicros or HydraFacials). WHAT NEW SERVICES ARE YOU EXCITED TO OFFER? CoolTone and Emsculpt! Both CoolTone and Emsculpt work by building, toning, and targeting muscle cells. This procedure helps both women and men build muscle and sculpt their body by using high-intensity electromagnetic energy causing an automatic muscle contraction. Approximately 20,000 supramaximal muscle contractions will occur per 30-minute session in the area treated. Areas that can be treated are abs, buttocks, calves, triceps, biceps, and thighs!

FRESNO SMILE MAKEOVERS

Cosmetic dentistry can truly transform smiles and a person’s life.

SAM NAMDARIAN, DMD, FAGD FRESNO, CALIFORNIA

D

r. Namdarian obtained his DMD from Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine in 2005. He completed his post-doctoral residency program at University Medical Center, Fresno (where he was Chief Resident), and then achieved post-graduate certification from the UCLA School of Dentistry. A member of numerous professional organizations, he is also a clinical instructor at the Frontier Institute. Dr. Namdarian’s extensive Invisalign training earned him Elite Provider status—over 700 Invisalign patients are now smiling with confidence!

HOW IMPORTANT IS A GREAT SMILE? A great smile gives a fantastic first impression. It changes the mood of people, removing bitterness and soreness towards other people. It gives and builds confidence to the person who smiles. WHAT DREW YOU TO COSMETIC DENTISTRY? Cosmetic dentistry can truly transform smiles and lives. The joy and excitement in a person’s face proves what a positive impact my cosmetic work can have—it’s life changing. My patients can smile confidently, share their happiness with others, and socialize more with friends and family. HOW IMPORTANT IS YOUR TEAM? I believe my success in dentistry is not based on my personal achievement, but on having a great and well-trained team. My staff members are excellent team players. Each cosmetic procedure is a product of perfect communication between my team and me. WHAT SETS YOUR PRACTICE APART? The main goal of our practice is to bring excellent patient care and customer service. We strive to accommodate every patient’s needs. We feel our patients are part of our family. They are the center of our attention at Fresno Smile Makeovers. THE FUTURE OF YOUR FIELD? I see a great future for the field of dentistry. People in California tend to care more about their smiles and dental health now than ever before. Due to the fast-growing population, there will be more of a need for dentists to provide dental care.

VALLEY INSTITUTE OF PLASTIC SURGERY AND

ASPIRE MEDISPA MARK A. CHIN, MD, MPH FRESNO, CALIFORNIA

D

r. Mark Chin is a boardcertified plastic surgeon who has served the Central Valley for over 25 years. His staff at the Valley Institute of Plastic Surgery and Aspire Medispa is committed to providing you with the latest technology and safest procedures to help you feel and look your best. Using our computerized analysis, our expert aesthetic providers will give you options to optimize your best qualities, enhancing your natural beauty.

Helping you age gracefully, more or less.

WHY DO YOU EMPLOY A LESS-IS-MORE PHILOSOPHY? Aging gracefully should be embraced, however, slowing the process is our goal. It is unnatural to look over-tightened, overfilled, and over-done. Subtle changes are the key to avoiding looking odd, and the solution is to begin with quality skincare and treatments to maintain a youthful look with surgery the last resort. HOW DOES SOMEONE KNOW IF IT’S TIME FOR A FACELIFT? There comes a time when treatments have maximized their effectiveness—the skin is too loose, and a person looks tired or angry when they are not! If the forehead also feels too heavy, then a facelift may be the best solution to give you a rested and youthful appearance. WHAT PART OF COSMETIC SURGERY DO YOU LOVE THE MOST? Helping mommies get bikini-ready. Sometimes patients can only do so much for themselves with dieting and exercising (which doesn’t help stretched out tissues). It is so rewarding to help a patient achieve her pre-baby shape once again—Mommy Makeovers help perk up breasts and flatten tummies once again.
