BEGINNERS How to start a new fitness program or try a new style of working out. Health & Fitness Editor Dina Juve
Some of the primary reasons most people have a hard time starting a workout routine are:
“I cannot afford to.” “I do not have the time.” “I am too old to start now.” “I would not know where to start.” “I am too embarrassed to work out.” “It is too difficult or painful when I do.” Despite the many reasons people have to not workout, it is indisputable that physical activity can improve one’s overall health. I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase, “Your health is your wealth.” The past few years have shown us how true this expression really is. Regular exercise can help reduce your risk of health issues, help you maintain a healthy weight, and strengthen your bones and muscles. The Department of Health & Human Services’ Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans 2nd Edition recommends the following exercise guidelines for aerobic activity and strength training:
Aerobic Activity
Strength Training
Get at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity a week, or an equal combination of moderate and vigorous aerobic activity. The guidelines suggest that you spread out this exercise over a week. To provide even greater health benefits and to assist with weight loss or maintaining weight loss, at least 300 minutes a week is recommended.
Do strength training exercises for all major muscle groups at least two times a week. Aim to do a single set of each exercise using a weight or resistance heavy enough to tire your muscles after about 12 to 15 repetitions.
If the above recommendations are too overwhelming, it’s okay. You don’t have to follow them rigidly. Don’t use it as a reason not to get aerobic activity in. Even small bursts of activity throughout the day can add up and provide health benefits. If this still sounds difficult, it doesn’t have to be. An effective aerobic activity can be as simple as a brisk walk, jogging in place, or jumping rope. There are two easy ways to measure your exercise intensity: 1) how you feel, and 2) your heart rate. If you are unsure how to measure your heart rate, you can find instructions on how to calculate it at www.heart.org or you may procure a heart rate monitor.
If you are unsure what your major muscle groups are and the best exercises for each, you can look them up online, get a strength training book, or schedule a private training session. If you have health issues that may prevent you from working certain muscle groups or your doctor has told you to avoid using certain muscle groups, I’d suggest asking your doctor to refer you to work with a physical therapist. I truly believe there is a fitness routine for everyone. We have already gone over the benefits of having a fitness program in place and why it is important. You just need to find the right one for you. Maybe you have worked out before and didn’t see the changes you hoped for, got hurt or injured, or just needed a break.
It is time for you to try a new style of working out.
Exercising Outdoors
With all of the changes happening, we have also seen that the future of fitness is shifting, too. The COVID-19 crisis continues to put a major focus on health. Fitness trends continue to emerge in the industry. Mental health and fitness continue to interlink with mind-body practices. We are seeing higher demands for personalized services, but now we are seeing virtual personal training and online offers from personal trainers. You are no longer dependent on your location, although I do believe in supporting your community, too.
People are spending more time outdoors again. That is also good for the mind and body. You can even do a Google search to find the best spots to workout outdoors in your area. They can be on your own, or opportunities with fitness trainers and gyms/studios that provide outdoor social distancing classes. We are also seeing more people hiking, running, and cycling outside again.
New styles of working out include:
Hybrid Gym Memberships You have the option to workout in person, virtually, or opt to head into the gym only a few days a week. But you can also workout at home. Hybrid memberships are providing payment options so customers can do both and pay that way.
Wearable Tracking Technology Smartwatches and fitness trackers are adding features that allow you to see metrics like body temperature, stress levels, sleep, and heart rate. You can even have healthy competitions with your friends and family.
Smart Home Gyms Equipment was already trending before the pandemic, but multiple lockdowns really accelerated recreating gym equipment. For many people, home gym equipment can be pricey, but brands are focusing more on size and price. More companies are creating options that fold and store easily. If you are a fitness beginner or it is time to try a new style of working out, we have more options than ever. Moreover, more people are talking about fitness being important for our bodies and minds, including our doctors. Starting a fitness program is an important decision, so if you have any concerns, talk to your doctor about the best options for you.

Her facilitation of donor investments enables the Central Valley’s largest healthcare provider to be a world-class enterprise. “It’s a big, huge machine,” Katie allegorizes, “and it’s a very expensive machine, but we work to keep fueling it so that we can take care of everyone who needs care.” Since its inception, Community has believed in making outstanding medical care readily available locally. Katie’s work realizes that goal. In May 2006, Katie joined Community as the Executive Director of the Foundation before being promoted to Vice President of Corporate Development in 2014. Four years later, she moved up again to her current role. Community is the largest healthcare provider in the Central Valley. It continues to be ranked as the most outstanding healthcare system in this region. Its reputation for excellence and continual advancement has been steadfast since its humble beginnings over 125 years ago. In this way, it’s easy to find a similarity between Community and Katie’s style of doing things. “I say it frequently, and I wouldn’t say it if I didn’t believe it: we really don’t stop anywhere short of world-class.”
Community is on a mission to provide exceptional healthcare in the Central Valley, alleviating the burden of traveling hours away to access it. “Not just me, but my colleagues, our leadership team, our Board of Trustees has a vision and a focus to be the best and bring the best. The folks who live here deserve access to top care right here at home,” she says. At Community, they “deliver the best and strive for better! This means doing the hard stuff that no one else, in many cases, can or will do. When we do it really well, success follows,” she adds. Katie is so passionate about her work that many of her conversations, even off-the-clock, go back to improving healthcare in the Central Valley. Katie remarks. “I do believe in our mission, which is to improve people’s lives. People ask me sometimes, ‘Well, how do you ask people for money?’ And I think it’s not even hard because it’s not for me—it’s to make something better; it’s to improve your life, your family’s life, your friends’, your neighbors’, ours, everybody around us, so that the central part of the state is supported.” Katie clearly loves what she does, and she’s quick to point out that Community has cultivated that positive environment for not only its patients but also its employees. “I’m very fortunate to do what I do and work where I work. The beauty of it, I think, is our culture at Community,” says Katie. “When I reflect on this, I think one of the big factors is that we have a great team. We all, at the leadership level, like each other, appreciate each other and work well together.” Katie likens the leadership at Community to a baseball team. “I play my base really well. Somebody else plays their base really well and, together, we’re amazing! So that makes a great dynamic because the environment is really constructive even in the hardest times.”
K
atie takes a reflective tone while discussing Community’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Our whole organization pulled together” to help those on the frontlines. “All I could think about was ways to support them. We worked to get them everything they needed to do their jobs. We even engaged people in the community to donate meals to them. It meant a lot to our hospital workers that people actually cared about what was going on inside.” Katie is quick to point out, however, “I don’t think any of it would have happened if we weren’t in an environment where everybody’s on the same page. It takes great vision and leadership and really good communication throughout, and we have that.” Because of Katie’s unique position, she is able to explore innovative ways for Community to serve the Central Valley. Terry’s House is a perfect example of this. Located directly across the street from Community Regional Medical Center in Downtown Fresno, the 17,000 sq. ft. “home-away-from-home” gives families of critical care patients a place to eat, sleep, and recharge. “That is my baby,” Katie is quick to admit. “I had a vision of some kind of hospitality home for the families of patients at Community Regional. I put my neck out on the line and went to our board with a proposal—I hadn’t been here very long, either,” she chuckles. Without hesitation, “they said, ‘Okay, that’s great. You knock yourself out! Raise enough money to bring it about.’ And, well, we did it.” When Katie gets her hands on a project, it tends to gain momentum quickly. Within about a four-year timeframe, $5.5 million was raised and Terry’s House was built—its 20 private guest rooms have been hosting families since 2011. “We have been very successful in seeking and gaining support for the expansion at Clovis,” elaborates Katie. Its first expansion, which culminated in 2008, doubled the size of the hospital. Recently, Katie and her team focused on cancer care. “We raised $20 million in just three years to help bring about the new Community Cancer Institute, which is on the Clovis Community campus,” and opened in 2018. “It has fixed a problem. Patients don’t have to leave the area for excellent cancer care and treatment. It’s here, all under one roof.”

I’ve always been very driven. I’ve always had focus. I’m accused of being very optimistic, which is true. I think within that optimism, I am able to innovate and be creative—which is necessary for my work.
C
onsidering the efficiency with which Katie performs her job and the passion she has for the Central Valley, you might assume that this was her calling from day one, but that’s not exactly the case. Katie was born and raised in Santa Barbara as the youngest of four, where, she reminisces, “The ocean was really our life!” Their babysitter was even a lifeguard, and Katie has fond memories of growing up surfing and fishing, and even learning to water ski in the ocean. She came to the Central Valley to attend Fresno State at the urging of her older sister, who had married a dairyman and moved to Tulare. Katie graduated from California State University, Fresno, with a bachelor’s degree in business. A series of college jobs she held had a common thread in healthcare by happenstance—she’d never previously envisioned a career in healthcare. “I became quite passionate about healing people, helping people, hearing their stories, and, hopefully, enhancing their life somehow.” Blood and guts didn’t really bother her, but she didn’t want to be hands-on in that way. “I realized, at that time, I could be most helpful on the business side of healthcare.” Katie eventually went back to school and obtained a degree in healthcare management from the University of Phoenix. “And I’ve been here defending Fresno ever since because people laugh and … aren’t very nice to Fresno.” But people like Katie are working to upend the negative misconceptions about Fresno by spreading the word that Community is building a comprehensive health system to meet the Valley’s growing needs. “I’ve always been very driven. I’ve always had focus. I’m accused of being very optimistic, which is true. I think within that optimism, I am able to innovate and be creative—which is necessary for my work,” says Katie. “I think that, as I’ve evolved, I have developed confidence and tenacity, much more than I had years ago. That’s just because of experience—you get that over time. When I was 28, I really wanted to have the experience and the knowledge that I do today, but there’s no way of getting there without having lived the professional life I’ve lived.” Outlook has a lot to do with it, too. “I think optimism is one thing, attitude is another. Both of those things are something that you can control. I would say those things might lend themselves to some wisdom,” she contemplates.
Katie understands that the “rising tide raises all ships” mentality yields tenfold benefits. Originally, “I wanted to inspire others. Now, I feel like I look for opportunities to prop others up. I want the people I am working with to be incredibly successful,” she mentions. “I ask my team for extreme performance—I ask myself for that. But when they do perform, then they should definitely be celebrated and rewarded for it.” And what happens when a whole team is successful? Just take a look at Community Health System.
N
euroscience is next on the docket. The groundwork for a dedicated neuroscience institute at Community Regional was laid when Bob Smittcamp donated $11 million dollars to seed the project and the Bob Smittcamp Family Neuroscience Institute was named in his honor. “Anybody needing neuroscience care will have a destination. There’s nothing like it right now in our region—it’ll be the first,” Katie explains. This facility will, again, solve the proximity problem, and keep patients close to their homes in the Central Valley. “It’s going to be a $65 million project, and we’re going to fundraise the lion’s share of that,” she asserts. With neurological issues, time is of the essence. “That’s part of the slogan. I say, ‘It’s about time.’ So it is about time we do this, but it’s also about time…” The pun is evident, as is the need for the neuroscience facility Community has in the works. So much of life truly is about timing—being at the right place at the right time; using time wisely; enjoying time well spent. Our jobs take up a substantial part of our time on earth, but if you love what you do, you never work a day in your life, right? Katie says, “I am really fortunate because I continue to love my work, and get up every morning and think, ‘I get to make a difference today. I get to do something that I really want to do.’” If each and every one of us got up and approached life with the zeal that Katie Zenovich demonstrates daily, can you imagine what our world would look like?

AUTUMN

Autumn is approaching, ushering in the season for comfort foods. But with the summer heat continuing to persist, lighter meals are still preferable. The following selection of vegetarian recipes complements that transition with fall flair. If you’re ready to really step up your greens game, a Warm Quinoa Salad in Rustic Mustard Vinaigrette will give you superfood energy and an even more impactful flavor (plus, it’s vegan!). Feature a Caramelized Onion Tart in your appetizer line-up or as part of a Parisian-style lunch. For dinner, Honey-Roasted Carrots with Creamy Goat Cheese Sauce are effortlessly dressed to impress. With these dishes, you’ll be getting cool-weather vibes without feeling like you’re preparing for hibernation!
Caramelized Onion Tart SERVES 4-8
1 sheet of puff pastry 1 sweet yellow onion Fig jam Gruyère cheese Asiago cheese Thyme (fresh) 4 tbs. salted sweet cream butter Seasoned salt Instructions Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cover a baking sheet with foil. Lay the puff pastry out flat. Set a large saucepan to medium heat. To prepare the onions, first slice them into ¼-inch slivers. Add the butter to the heated saucepan and allow it to melt. Once melted, add in the sliced onions, and sprinkle seasoned salt over the top. Toss the onions in the melted butter, then cover with a lid and allow them to sweat on low heat. The onions will soon soften and should slowly turn a golden-brown color. Continue caramelizing the onions, stirring occasionally (about 20 to 30 minutes). Spread the fig jam across the puff pastry. Grate asiago cheese over the jam and then layer on the caramelized onions, followed by grated gruyère cheese and a sprinkling of fresh thyme. Bake until the edges of the pastry dough puff up and turn brown (about 20 minutes). The Caramelized Onion Tart can be served at any temperature.
Honey-Roasted Carrots with Creamy Goat Cheese Sauce SERVES 4
12 carrots 4 garlic cloves 2 tbs. thyme (fresh; plus more for garnish) ½ cup honey ½ cup avocado or olive oil ¼ cup pecans (chopped) ¼ cup dates (chopped) Seasoned salt Black pepper
For the Creamy Goat Cheese Sauce ½ cup goat cheese ¼ cup Greek yogurt 1 tbs. avocado or olive oil 1 tbs. honey 1 tbs. water ¼ tsp. garlic powder ¼ tsp. seasoned salt Instructions Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Begin by preparing the carrots. Chop the greens off and peel the skins. Mince the garlic. Place the carrots in a baking dish, drizzle them with the oil and honey, then sprinkle on minced garlic and thyme, as well as seasoned salt and black pepper to taste. Bake the Honey Roasted Carrots until tender (about 45 minutes). Be sure to keep the warm honey mixture that cooked down for use later. For the Creamy Goat Cheese Sauce, add the goat cheese, Greek yogurt, oil, honey, water, garlic powder, and seasoned salt into a food processor. Emulsify the mixture until ultra-smooth. Plate the carrots. Drizzle the Creamy Goat Cheese Sauce over the Honey-Roasted Carrots, followed by some of the warm honey mixture, then garnish with pecans, dates, and thyme on top.
Warm Quinoa Salad in Rustic Mustard Vinaigrette SERVES 4–8 1 cup quinoa (uncooked) 2 cups kale ½ a butternut squash ½ cup dried cranberries ½ cup pumpkin seeds or pepitas 2 cloves garlic Avocado or olive oil 1 tsp. onion powder 1 tsp. garlic powder Garlic salt Black pepper 2 cups water
For the Rustic Mustard Vinaigrette 1 cup avocado or olive oil ½ cup red wine vinegar ¼ cup country or coarse-ground Dijon mustard ½ a shallot Garlic salt Black pepper Instructions Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cover a baking sheet with foil. Clean and peel the butternut squash and cut it into bite-size cubes. Mince the garlic. Toss the cubes in oil, minced garlic, the onion and garlic powders, as well as garlic salt and black pepper to taste. Spread the seasoned butternut squash cubes on the prepared baking sheet, then roast them until they begin to turn brown and crisp on the edges (about 45 minutes). Bring two cups of water to a boil. Add the dry quinoa and cover with a lid. Lower the heat to a slow simmer. The quinoa will be cooked when it has absorbed all the water (about 10 to 20 minutes). Once cooked, fluff the quinoa with a fork and set it aside. To prepare the Rustic Mustard Vinaigrette, add the oil, red wine vinegar, your choice of Dijon mustard, and half a shallot, as well as garlic salt and black pepper to taste, into a food processor. Emulsify the ingredients until well-incorporated. To a large mixing bowl, add the precooked quinoa, followed by the kale, roasted butternut squash, dried cranberries, pumpkin seeds or pepitas, and the Rustic Mustard Vinaigrette. Toss them together. Serve the Warm Quinoa Salad as either a side or a bowl base with protein on top.

Make Beauty a Priority
Surround yourself with beauty. Display objects and art that are beautiful and unique to YOU. You may feel immense joy when you surround yourself with meaning. A vintage ashtray or a hand-me-down coffee mug may put a smile on your face just by having importance specific to you and only you. A whacky piece of art can instantly lift your spirits just because of its out-of-scale proportions or its unique color palate. So, dare to be you!
Plants breathe life into your home…literally. They consume harmful carbon dioxide and VOCs, replenishing your dwelling with fresh oxygen. House plants are often thought to be delicate and fragile, and not everyone has a green thumb. However, in reality, they are more durable than you may think, and most of them thrive with minimal attention. Peperomia and pathos have beautiful cascading vines, while rubber, snake, and aloe plants are structured and compact. All of them are perfect for adding a touch of green to your windowsill or your favorite corner.

Try Aromatherapy
Breathe in…and exhale! Aromatherapy is a holistic way of treating many common ailments, which helps in the promotion of overall mind and body wellbeing. Some of its benefits may include pain management, improvement in sleep quality, reduction in stress, and soothing of sore joints. You can introduce aromatherapy into your home through several different ways. Products such as diffusers, aromatic spritzers, and candles ensure that your surroundings exhibit a soothing scent to help you feel relaxed.
Thou shall not clutter. Maintaining a mindful home is a lot of work, so it is a good idea to declutter whenever possible and avoid bringing in more than you take out. Usually around the holidays, my home seems to accumulate heaps and piles of mess; however, if I get ahead of the clutter, my Novembers and Decembers are not overwhelming, and my holiday season is a breeze. Less stuff means a whole lot less to clean, giving you significantly more time to do as you please.

For a home spa look that will turn even your head, feeling your best in nothing but the best is the key. Donning never-take-it-off jewelry is essential. A jersey slip dress is ultra-comfy, practical, and feels as sexy as it looks. Pull up your locks with a silky headband and have satin mules at the ready. Nothing screams hotel spa more than a plush robe, so be sure to have one at home, too.

POWER of manifestation Features Contributor Christine Rose
Learning to Love Yourself
Y
ou’d think that with an Instagram handle like @hashtag.pretty, I emerged from the womb loving myself. But let me tell you…the self-love journey I’ve been on hasn’t been, well, the prettiest. In fact, it is still very much in progress (and I’m so okay with that). Although it has taken me a while, it has been worth the wait since self-love comes with the ability to make your dreams come true. Don’t get me wrong: I felt the love from my loved ones growing up. However, everyone has their own way of showing and sharing affection. Throughout my formative years, I received quite a few messages that were not the most uplifting. This was my introduction to the pressures of expectations, which, as I got older, I encountered in other ways. I felt the pressure around me at all times. If it wasn’t a comment about the way I looked (including how much I weighed), I was being compared to others around me. The underlying message, or the way I translated it, was: “You’re not enough.” Fast forward to my life as an adult. It took me a long time to realize how that upbringing played a big role in why I became a people-pleaser. It took me even longer to realize that I questioned my worth and let others’ thoughts of me dictate the way I felt about myself. In my 39 years of existence, I’ve spent way too much time and energy worrying about everyone else’s opinions of me…sheesh. This realization was key in helping me turn things around and reclaiming my power. It helped me acknowledge my relationship with alcohol and become sober, dig deeper into yoga, make my mental health a priority, incorporate mindfulness into my daily routine, and establish a consistent gratitude practice.
The recipe or formula varies for everyone. But at the end of the day, clarity (and slowing things down) gave me the opportunity to take huge leaps. With clarity came the ability to see myself in another light, which gave me the opportunity to not only learn who I am, but to celebrate it as well. Really learning to love myself included acknowledging my accomplishments while also loving my flaws and accepting my mistakes and the fact that I will make a few more in my lifetime. Self-acceptance broke open my world in the best way possible. It freed me from years of familial and societal expectations, and gave me the power to just be myself, which is just enough. More than enough. To say this process was healing is an understatement. Then came the healing powers of yoga. In 13 years of practicing, it has helped me in so many different ways. I learned how to move my body to make myself feel better, both physically and emotionally. I learned how to love my body, regardless of the way it looked, and just be grateful for my health. However, learning to breathe was the biggest game-changer for me amid all these benefits. Awareness of my breathing patterns helped me realize that holding my breath was symbolic of my inability to let things go. When was the last time you checked in with your breathing? Do you ever catch yourself holding your breath? Take some time to notice how much more relaxed and present you are when you are intentional about the way you breathe. Similar to yoga practice—with every class, every posture, every breath—you become more prepared for the next. Your ability to create physical and emotional stillness allows you to discern the messages your body and mind are trying to relay to your heart, and through that discernment you are able to make your dreams come true.
—67— SEP | OCT
No, seriously. You have that power, and it starts with believing it exists. With that belief, combined with your ability to center yourself, you are able to pinpoint the things in your life that you want to come to fruition. Manifestation is defined as the act or process of making something evident through thoughts, attraction, and beliefs. For me, learning to love myself and believe in myself became the gateway to unlock my ability to manifest. From there, I visualized what I wanted to receive and what it would take to make it happen. Then, I took the time to meditate on how it would feel when I met my goals so that I could prepare myself for receiving what I otherwise may not have felt worthy of. Some things I have also learned to be helpful are to stay grounded and present throughout the process, and to ensure my best to stay positive, humble, and grateful (easier said than done, I know). Doing this has allowed me to unlearn the expectations from others and align more with my own life path, one with more peace and contentment. When your dream surfaces, it is highly important to devote just as much time to practicing gratitude. This will help keep the cycle of gratitude and happiness going, which will also enable you to feel more positive
emotions as well as an even greater awareness of and gratitude for all that you already possess. If you told eight-year-old me that I would be teaching yoga, pursue a career as a journalist, and be married to the woman of my dreams with four dogs (!!!!), I am pretty sure I would have rolled my eyes and laughed at you. But that is only because eight-year-old me wasn’t aware of what I am capable of doing now, and eight-year-old me didn’t possess the same strength and love that I have for myself that came with every single experience that brought me here. My journey is my own and it may not resonate with everyone. However, it has brought me to a happier place that I’m beyond grateful for, and I now understand the steps it took for get me to this place of realization. You, too, are more than capable of making your innermost fantasies become realities. You can have it all…but only when you find clarity, refine your own expectations, and work towards manifestation. Be intentional and selective with every decision you make and watch how your life unfolds as you breathe on.
