LETTER FROM

THE EDITOR

I get nostalgic every September. It’s crazy to think that two years ago CVLUX was merely a dream, and here we are going into our third year. Over the past two years I have met so many amazing people who have left an indelible mark on my life and our company. When I look back at the first edition of CVLUX, I see how much the magazine has grown. We are constantly adding editors and contributors to elevate the content of each edition. Not only has our content continued to evolve, but also, so has our mission. We are leading the way on the digital front with the addition of the LUX daily which we launched at the beginning of this year. This platform allows our readers and advertisers to connect on a daily basis. Our circulation also continues to grow and I am pleased to announce that this Fall CVLUX will be distributed in almost every Barnes & Noble across California. Recently, at an event at the Montage in Beverly Hills, we were called out as the “fastest growing luxury publication in the state.” A huge honor when I think about our humble beginnings, working from a glass top table out of the sunroom at the home of our dear friend and colleague, Eddie Melikian, in Old Fig Garden.

Donna and I are so happy that all of you have chosen to be part of our journey. Without the support of the community none of this would have ever been possible. Each day is a celebration for us and it warms my heart to look back and think that we’ve accomplished something that no one else in the Valley has ever done before. I am extremely pleased with this most recent edition of CVLUX. The out-of-the-box and completely original fashion is perhaps my most favorite part. You can see the work of our dear friend and celebrity stylist, Nazy Meknat, on page 55. This all white explosion plays off the hard lines and geometric shapes that is so pivotal in fashion this coming Fall. Another fabulous addition to this issue is our candid interview with actress, Betsy Brandt. Betsy is best known for her critically-acclaimed role on the hit HBO series, Breaking Bad, which catapulted her career to new heights. The interview can be seen on page 46. My business partner and dear friend, Donna Kaczmarki, had a chance to work with Betsy recently in L.A. and found her to be a breath of fresh air within the entertainment community. Finally, it is time for the Luxury Awards! This year we have assembled a list of all the businesses and individuals who are offering unparalleled service to the community. I encourage you to take the time to log on to www. cvlux.com and cast your vote. Once again, I am so happy to be partnering with Cumulus Broadcasting for the event, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Marjaree Mason Center. Let’s make this year’s event one for the record books, and keep an eye on social media for all the latest Luxury Award news and updates. So take a little time, stop what you are doing and thumb through the pages of this edition; who knows what you might discover? Cheers,

David Manning

HIGH PROFILE An Interview With Celebrity Stylist Nazy Meknat Features Editor: Ann T. Sullivan Whitehurst

WHERE DID YOU START AND WHAT WAS YOUR BIG BREAK? After I graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, I started as an intern for a stylist. My big break came when a friend of mine set up an interview for me with model and actress, Milla Jojovich, and I got the job. WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL PROCESS OF STYLING CLIENTS? It starts with a consultation. I need to know their age, lifestyle, job, likes and dislikes so I can dress each individual before the pulling, shopping and fitting. WHAT TREND DO YOU SEE NOW THAT HAS TO GO? Lady Loafers! The stacked, chunky kitten heel is just not doing it for me. WHAT IS HOT FOR FALL/WINTER? From belts and shoes, to sweaters and leather jackets, this season will be everything maroon. DURING OSCAR SEASON, HOW MANY CLIENTS DO YOU TAKE ON FOR EACH EVENT? No more than two. If you want to do your best, you can’t spread yourself too thin between too many clients. It’s best to spend most of your time and energy on one or two clients and give them your best service.

WHAT WAS THE MOST EXCITING PHOTOSHOOT LOCATION YOU’VE BEEN INVOLVED IN? The Eiffel tower. There is nowhere in the world like Paris, especially to a fashion enthusiast. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG STYLISTS TRYING TO MAKE THEIR MARK IN THE BUSINESS? Don’t shy away from the idea of interning; it’s the best way to learn the ins and outs of this business. This is a tough business to be in and can be frustrating, so make sure you love it and have passion for it. Work hard, stay true to yourself and don’t get discouraged. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HOTEL? The Plaza in New York City and Sunset Tower in Los Angeles. DO YOU SEE YOURSELF EVER DEVELOPING YOUR OWN LINE OF CLOTHING? As of now I am pretty happy with just styling, but I never say never, who knows what the future may bring?

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? My very first job after graduating from fashion school was doing visual displays, dressing mannequins and taking care of the overall look of a department store. Of course I started as an assistant. WHEN YOU HAVE EXTRA MONEY, WHAT DO YOU SPLURGE ON? Traveling. I love to travel and of course, shop. WHO IS THE PERSON WHO HAS MOST IMPACTED YOUR LIFE? In my personal life my sister has definitely been the person I have always looked up to, and her strength and compassion is unreal. In my professional life, Stacy London has had the most impact on me professionally. I had the pleasure of working with her for a little while, but long before I worked with her I admired Stacy, her work and her personality. I looked up to her and learned so much from her about how to be a true wardrobe stylist. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FILM? Django Unchained is one of my favorites and all Audrey Hepburn movies.

The Boxy brand emanates from a legacy of Story: beautyAmy and Silverberg design. A third generation Photographers: James, who entrepreneur fromChance Fresno, California Dominique James and grew up in the design and furniture Melissa Wedekind business, Hannah Serimian is driven to meet consumer needs with design solutions that are useful and beautiful.

TH INK ABOUT WHY Y OU S TARTE D... #BOXYGIRL

At the intersection of versatility and aesthetics, Hannah took an opportunity to create a modern, exceptionally crafted acrylic organizer. Along with her Father, Dan, she began on a journey to design and create a clear acrylic box that is uniquely designed with exceptional quality. Hannah and Dan sought out industry leaders to assist in the engineering and manufacturing process. Using the top-of-the-line Lucite material and a single mold injection process, these stackable nesting trays are designed to be stylish, sophisticated and versatile organizational solutions. The original ten inch Boxy Girl is a 4-stack box best utilized for beautifully organizing make-up, jewelry, desk supplies and much more. Flexibility is at the consumer’s fingertips: create a side-by-side double 2-stack, get two and make a double 4-stack, or even add single trays to make the stack taller. Whatever her needs and her available space, Boxy Girl can elegantly accommodate. #stackthatboxy WHO IS BOXY GIRL?

#BOXYBOSS Imagine being able to store your makeup in a functional but stylish way. Now imagine it can go further, and actually adapt to your personal needs. Hannah Serimian, creator of Boxy Girl, has the answer to your organizational prayers, and it’s not only functional, but classy and chic, too. The Boxy Girl herself was born to a long line of entrepreneurs in California. In fact, she grew up more speifically in the furniture business. Her parents and grandparents both owned several furniture stores in California. While spending time in her family’s stores, at auctions and antique shows, Hannah developed a love for the Art Nouveau and Art Deco period pieces. This background has played a large role in the birth of Boxy Girl. “The lines, colors, and geometry of the Art Deco movement had a significant influence on my ability to understand technique and design,” Hannah says. She further explains that she is inspired by periods where women personify both strength and femininity. This interface of form and style through

imagery has highly influenced her artistic abilities. Hannah is not unlike many artists, inventors and entrepreneurs, in the sense that she noticed a need for a product that had not yet been invented, and dreamed it alive. “There are other makeup boxes,” Hannah says, “but they’re not like ours.” While competitors use cheap, glued plastic, Boxy Girl is made from high quality Lucite ™ Acrylic. Most importantly, using the injection mold manufacturing process insures durability and exceptional quality. Another differentiating factor is that, “other boxes are single solid units, Boxy Girl is versatile: you can make the box taller or wider by adding extra stacks, choose either an opened or closed top, or rearrange the drawers by using the removable dividers.” A busy, multi-tasking wife and mother of three, Hannah knows just how important adaptability truly is. “In my house,” she says, “we use one for the tv remotes, my daughter uses one for her American Girl Doll dresses, and my son uses one for his Legos.” Adaptable is right. Hannah grew up in the furniture business (her dad helped her build the prototype), but her background in retail marketing is now coming in handy. “We’re trying to do something unique,” she says, “encouraging our consumers to be a part of the branding process.” That means an Instagram account where people can show their before and after makeup organization pictures, Youtube makeup tutorials, among other new and exciting interacting endeavors. Boxy Girl is currently available on the website, and in the spring, the company will do a national launch.

WEAR LUCK Story: Amy Silverberg

W

hat if the clothes you wore could truly reflect the way you feel? In other words, why not wear clothing with a purpose? Wear Luck is an apparel company that offers stylish shirts with positive messages and visual encouragement, like nothing else in your closet. Wear Luck started in the late ‘90s as a company specializing in shirts with humor and holiday themes. Eventually, the creators decided they wanted to design apparel that might mean something more to people. “We thought of things that make people happy or make them feel lucky—colors, symbols, phrases,” says Michelle Hastings. When they debuted the new line, people responded to it immediately. Listening to customer reactions has been integral to the brand’s success. “We’re adaptable,” says Michelle, “so if one shirt is selling well in one color, we’ll ask people on social media what other colors they would like, and add them.” Social media is not only a powerful marketing tool, but also allows customers to share their experiences in more personal ways. One customer even contacted Wear Luck to report her actual luck: she won a cruise while wearing one of their shirts. “We love hearing people’s stories,” she says. “If we know why and when people wear our shirts, we get ideas for new shirts that our customers will enjoy.” One concept often leads to another—a shirt with the phrase “doing what you love and doing it often” led to a shirt about spending quality time with family.

34

CVLUX.COM 2015

Wear Luck offers its customers more than just inspiration and positivity. When a frequent customer, who also happened to be a breast cancer survivor, went in for follow-up appointments, she always wore the same shirt, like a lucky penny. It gave her strength, she told Wear Luck. Not just a fashion statement, the company’s shirts can help turn negative experiences into something hopeful. “Why not do everything you can to manifest something good in your life,” she explains. “Let’s say you’re a single girl and you’re going to a place with a bunch of single guys. Why not wear a shirt that makes you feel like meeting someone? Something flirty, or anything you want, for that matter.” If you can stack the cards in your favor, or at least give yourself a personal boost of confidence—that sounds at least worth the price of a shirt to me. What’s next for Wear Luck? First, a men’s line. Men need luck too, after all. Visit the Wear Luck website at www.wearluck.com to find a shirt that makes you feel lucky.

behind the scenes at... NEW YORK FASHION WEEK A Beginner’s Guide Lifestyle Editor: Pandora Vanderpump Sabo Photographer: The Divine Addiction New York Fashion Week (NYFW), held twice a year during February and September in New York, is the coveted event where international fashion designers show their collections to the buyers, press, and public. It’s a mix of large branded productions (like IMG’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week) and smaller independent events. The shows are split between large tents at Lincoln Center and other less traditional locations like those in Chelsea, TriBeCa and Wall Street. By invitation only, the shows are filled with editors, celebrities, buyers, press, fashion bloggers and a whole slew of fashionistas. Get Invited Everyone always asks me how to get invited to Fashion Week and there’s no correct answer! It’s not a public, ticketed event and the guest list is usually kept to people in the fashion industry and celebrities. The easiest way, if you have anything to do with fashion, is to get press credentials, like many fashion bloggers do. If you are covering the event for a magazine or blog, you can apply for press credentials at MBFashionweek.com. If you can’t get credentials but you are still involved in fashion (a buyer, stylist, etc.) you can try to get on the PR list for the designer you are interested in. Contact their PR team and let them know you’d love to get a ticket to the show. Let them know why you should be attending their show (who have you styled for? have you worked with any publications? why are you of interest to them?) and include your past work… it’s your job to convince them! Most importantly, don’t forget to follow up. Seating & Swag NYFW’s hierarchy is most prominently visible in the seating chart. The first three or four rows are generally filled with celebrities, editors, reporters and buyers, so they can get an up-close look at the clothing and trends. Celebrities and editors of major fashion magazines sit in

the front row, so if you’re looking to star-spot that’s where to look. However, there’s not really a bad seat at NYFW; the rows are designed so everyone gets a good look. There are often gift bags and swag left on the seats of the first few rows (sometimes on every seat in the building!), filled with goodies ranging from edible yummies to beauty products. So if you’re sitting in a row with swag, make sure nobody steals yours. Can’t Make It? Don’t worry, you can still get involved! It’s extremely easy to follow NYFW online and you can really get the full effect. E! has amazing coverage live from the shows, and most fashion blogs and magazines do daily updates. Have the girls over, make a cocktail and peruse the newest trends. WHAT NOT TO DO Don’t forget to remove your hat. There’s nothing worse than sitting behind someone who looks like they’re going to the races. Be polite and take it off. Don’t Disrespect the Seating Chart. People work hard to create it, and everyone has their place. Keep to yours and don’t cause a scene. Don’t Lose Your Cool. There are a lot of celebrities at Fashion Week—don’t go nuts! Don’t be late, but don’t be too early. Networking before a show is a great idea, but don’t get there an hour early and be stuck sitting around forever. Most shows run about 30 minutes late, so if you get there on time, you’ll still have enough time to network. Don’t Over-Selfie. One or two is enough, guys. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day so that you can enjoy your NYFW experience to the fullest. Stay Comfortable What you wear to NYFW is obviously important, but don’t neglect comfort. The last thing you want to do is miss out on a show because your feet are killing you and you have to go home early. Make sure to bring things like foldable flats,

hair ties and Advil so you can stay refreshed and comfortable throughout the day. Organize Fashion Week is as hectic as it gets, so make sure to plan your week in advance. Know where you’re going, plan time to get there, have your credentials ready and don’t be late! The better organized you are, the more fun you’ll have. Layer September in NYC can be hot, cold, raining, humid, snowing or all of the above. Layering your outfit is the best way to make sure you are prepared for all of the possibilities. There’s nothing worse than being bundled up for the outside cold and melting inside under the bright lights next to hundreds of people. Don’t Panic New York traffic and potential weather problems mean running late is always a possibility. Add in frenzied confusion at the entrances to shows, street photographers and a stampede of fashion bloggers and you can easily find yourself starting to panic. Don’t! Almost every NYFW show starts 20-30 mins late, so take a breath and make your way inside.

There’s nothing better than throwing a last minute soirée … and why not use NYFW as an excuse to have the ladies over, whip up some Esspresso Martinis and bring out your inner Fashion Police while discussing the emerging new trends! These little hors d’oeuvres are my favorite for last minute get-togethers, as they are extremely quick and always a crowd pleaser. Plus, they’re very versatile – you can fill them with just about anything!

Runway Fall Entertaining: Fashion Week Hors d’Oeuvres Brownie Berry Baskets

These are essentially the dessert version of these little wonton baskets. They can really be filled with almost anything you like. As a lighter dessert, I like fresh berries, a touch of brownie and a dollop of whipped cream, but you can go all out! Try filling them with pound cake, strawberries and whipped cream, or chocolate mousse and cookie crumbles… the options are endless! Ingredients: 12 square wonton wrappers Olive oil Cinnamon 3 small chocolate brownies 1 package blueberries, washed 1 package raspberries, washed Whipped cream Powdered Sugar Preparation: For the crunchy baskets: 1. It’s a great drink for entertaining, as it’s perfect for boozy brunches, pre-dinner cocktails or after-dinner dessert drinks. They are easy to make and absolutely delicious. I’ve included two versions – one has more of a punch and less calories, while the other is creamy, decadent and delicious. The Traditional Espresso Martini Ingredients 1 oz vodka 2 oz Kahlua 1 oz freshly brewed espresso, cooled Ice Espresso beans for garnish or... The After Dinner Espresso Martini Ingredients 1 oz Vodka (try vanilla vodka for a little bit of a sweeter taste!) 1 ¼ oz Kahlua 1 oz Espresso ¾ oz Bailey’s Ice Espresso beans for garnish Preparation 1. efore I interviewed Betsy Brandt, an actress known for her seamless ability to shift between gritty roles (Breaking Bad) and more comedic parts (The Michael J Fox show), I mentioned her name to a friend. Many years ago, this friend worked in television, as a production assistant, a position at the bottom of the proverbial ladder, in which he mostly fetched people coffee and was largely ignored. In other words, Betsy had no reason to be overly kind to him. Yet, when he worked on one of her shows, she went out of her way to say hello to him every day, ask him how he was, and get to know him. She was kind for the sake of being kind. If you believe in karma, it’s easy to see that this generosity has come back to her tenfold during her career. If you don’t believe in karma but you do believe in talent, then that talent has opened door after door. I believe in both, and after talking with Betsy, I have to believe she does, too. I ask Betsy what she’s working on currently, and included in that question is an important bit of subtext: where do you go after a role on Breaking Bad, a show that many critics (and viewers) hail as the best television series of all time. “I didn’t want to chase that sort of result again,” Betsy says, “because I was so lucky the first time.” Breaking Bad was fearless in the way it portrayed the underbelly of a culture, and yet never shocking for the sake of being shocking. Betsy calls it, “a dark, dark, dark comedy with really wonderful storytelling.” For now, she’ll focus on more straightforward comedy. Her next project is a show called Life in Pieces, premiering on CBS. “It’s not a crazy concept,” she says, “just really well-written, about a family and all its complications.” On the show, two of her heroes play the role of her parents, James Brolin and Dianne Wiest, actors whom she’s always deeply admired. I asked her if that fact intimidated her. CVLUX.COM 2015

49

“When people create roles for me on shows like these, it still floors me.”

“I find rock stars intimidating,” she says. “With actors, when you’re in the room together, you speak the same language. It makes you want to do better, to rise to that occasion.” Plus, Betsy has experience in comedy. In addition to a recurring role in Parenthood, she starred as Michael J Fox’s wife on the “brief but wonderful” Michael J Fox Show, who happens to be one of her favorite co-stars of all time. “He’s funny in regular life,” Betsy says, “without a script, when he’s not even trying.” Incidentally, so is she. And this is what I mean by the endless good fortune Betsy seems to have tapped into: she also has a recurring role on Masters of Sex, Showtime’s texturally rich and spanning episodic look at Virginia Masters and the Sexual Revolution. “When people create roles for me on shows like these, it still floors me,” Betsy says, “I still get emotional.” In fact, on Masters of Sex, when the creators made a chair with Betsy’s name on it, she burst into tears. “I started as a guest and they made me feel like family,” she says. “Meanwhile, everyone was like, ‘has she never had a chair before?’ I have!” Part of Betsy’s approachability and down-to-earth personality might have something to do with her background. She grew up in Michigan, after which she moved to Seattle to do plays. “It’s a city where all big careers are made,” she jokes. Still, there weren’t many theaters—or roles—in the rainy city, and when she came out to Los Angeles to do an independent film, she decided to stay. She met her husband in college at a frat party, and they still go back to Michigan, where her parents still live, at least a few times a year. I asked her what made her want to be an actress—if there was some early, transformative experience.

50

CVLUX.COM 2015

“My mom was my reading teacher in elementary school, and one of the class assignments was to read a play,” Betsy says. “For some reason, I suggested we act the play out. My mom cast me in the leading role, only because she knew I’d be able to memorize all the lines. I was really good at memorizing.” She also remembers writing and directing plays while growing up in her Michigan neighborhood. “I must have been pretty bossy at that time. It’s funny to think about now, because of how collaborative I am when I’m working. Now, I’m constantly seeing multiple sides, asking for other opinions, thinking, ‘Or that could work.’” As a mother of two young children, compromise and patience are crucial. I ask her if she has any advice for working mothers. “Don’t be so hard on yourself,” she says. “It’s easy for mothers to feel guilty—we feel this intrinsic responsibility to do it all, and to do it all really well, if not perfectly. As a mother, being kind to yourself goes a long way. We’re doing our best.” Betsy was pregnant with her second child while filming Breaking Bad. Her children have spent so much time with her on set her daughter used to call the Breaking Bad set “the big box with candy.” This makes me laugh. “That’s what gets their attention,” Betsy says, “craft services.” I ask Betsy if her children show any interest in acting. She laughs. (Betsy laughs often and easily—a pleasure). “It’s funny,” she says, “on Breaking Bad, my daughter would see girls her age acting and she would think it looked like fun. I had to explain to her—that little girl is working. She doesn’t get to go play after every take. She has a job.”

51

CVLUX.COM 2015

This rationale seems indicative of Betsy’s thoughtful parenting. Committed to preserving their childhood, her kids get the best of both worlds—the candy and the play-time. If her children wanted to be actors, she explains, they certainly could, when they’re older. When I ask her about advice for young actors, she says this: “There are certain actors that when I’m around them, I feel proud to also be an actor. They’re talented and kind—generous with their time. That’s my big advice: be the kind of actor that would make you proud to be around.”

DRESS: CENGIZ ABAZOGLU SHOES: CALVIN KLEIN EARRINGS: CRISTINA SABATINI DIAMOND RING: L’DEZEN BY PAYAL SHAH

In my opinion, she might as well have described herself. While I’m not an actress, I do feel proud to be around Betsy. She teaches workshops for young actors. She, too, is generous with her time and talent. “I find it very rewarding,” Betsy says, about teaching. “I teach a class entitled ‘Intro to Writing.’ We talk about how best to communicate your passion for a subject to which you’ve dedicated your life.” At the end of our time together, I tell her the story about my friend, to whom she was so kind when he brought her a coffee and Danish on set. “Wow,” she says, “that’s so nice to hear. What a cool story,” and I agree. Then again, it’s very easy to say nice things about Betsy.

But it’s the new luxurious floor plans and features that will sweep you off your feet. The Granville design team has added sconces, beveled-edge mirrors, marble counters in the bathroom and utility areas, and under-mount sinks throughout. An optional 12-foot sliding glass French door creates an indoor/outdoor lifestyle. The homes in Phase III of Via Fiore are built to make your life easier in every way. Each comes equipped with Granville’s cutting-edge Total Connect package, delivering comfort, security and convenience at the touch of a button. Season TASTE THE

An Interview with Chef Pamela Salzman Story: Amy Silverberg

Think it’s impossible to prepare a delicious, gourmet meal that’s also healthy? Think again. It’s possible, and Chef Pamela Salzman can teach you how—maybe even in the privacy of your very own home. Pamela didn’t follow a traditional culinary path, but she always knew deep in her heart that she’d end up in the food world. As a child, she waited by the mailbox for Gourmet Magazine to arrive, and her parents instilled in her a love of cooking from scratch, using ingredients harvested from the family garden. After Pamela attended a cooking class with her friends, what started out as a hobby eventually turned into a career. The recipes Pamela and her friends were taught in the cooking class advocated the usual excess of butter and fat. Pamela had a bright idea: why not make a few healthy adjustments to the recipes? She did just that, and in doing so, realized she had a knack for making delicious food healthier. This realization led to Pamela teaching a group of her own, and it took off—people wanted more. She eventually left the corporate world to follow her dream. In fact, she still leads the same, original cooking group since 2008.

72

Teaching monthly cooking groups around Los Angeles, in addition to open classes in Manhattan Beach, Pamela’s recipes don’t fall into any sort of fad diet trends such as Paleo or Atkins. Instead, most of her recipes are classically healthy, featuring anti-inflammatory, low-glycemic ingredients, meaning less animal products, more fish, and plenty of vegetables, fruits, and legumes. According to Pamela, these ingredients are the basic nuts and bolts of health. She also customizes classes and recipes according to personal preferences. CVLUX.COM 2015

Roast until tender, approximately 20-30 minutes. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool. 4. The Golden Door Spa, a wellness institution since the 1950’s, recently underwent a 50 million dollar renovation. With its iconic pagodas and specialty one-on-one treatments, it continues to be a major innovator in the world of hospitality. The recent expansion might have something to do with the spa’s good karma: 100% of the net profit goes to eliminating child abuse. The Golden Door Spa has consistently ranked number one in the world by Travel and Leisure for a reason: with only 40 rooms, a personal chef, 50 miles of trails and workshops in meditation and mindfulness, guests can truly enjoy a customized experience. In fact, the spa offers its guests personal trainers who provide customized workout sessions. Guests aren’t even required to bring anything—the spa will provide clothes and toothpaste, in case you’ve suddenly vaulted out of the rat race and landed on one of the spa’s lush green expanses. The Golden Door Spa’s spokesperson, Kathy Vanneff, says that guests don’t just come to relax and unplug, but also to change their lives: “People come after a tragedy, or to get off coffee or cigarettes, you name it.” What’s next for Golden Door Spa? Food and skin care lines, says Kathy. “The fact that a hospitality company could start a lifestyle brand that people actually want to be a part of—that’s really rare,” Kathy says. Retail stores in Century City and La Jolla are set to open in the beginning of September. According to Kathy, the new stores will be true to The Golden Door Spa experience, with all of the unique items you would normally enjoy as a spa guest. If you don’t get a chance to experience the famed spa in person, this is certainly the next best thing: spa living in everyday life.

Fashion has become such a huge part of our lives. MILAN, ITALY Bulgari Hotel

I fell in love with this property when walking the amazing streets of Milan, passing quaint yet stylish shops and restaurants, then making one turn on a private residential street before reaching this gorgeous garden oasis. BULGARI MILAN, once a former 18 century palazzo, is sleek and suave but in a very subtle way. From the moment you walk in you are greeted with black marble and a roaring fireplace but also the most lovely staff and an intoxicating aroma (I love their candles!) to make you feel perfectly at home and comfortable. As you make your way through the lobby, you come across my favorite aspect of the hotel—a gorgeous 4,000 square meter garden, a natural th

extension of the nearby botanical garden. This is such a perfect place to escape the busy streets of Milan and enjoy a relaxing breakfast or a delicious afternoon cocktail. This boutique hotel also just completed a beautiful renovation of all their guest rooms, most of which offer mesmerizing views of the private garden below. You will also love unwinding in the newly renovated BULGARI Spa whether relaxing in the new outdoor Jacuzzis or swimming in the shimmering pool. The entire property embraces such a peaceful serenity but never loses its style and grace.

NEW YORK CITY, NY

Baccarat Hotel & Residences New York New York’s new social stunner is the Baccarat Hotel & Residences New York. This absolutely gorgeous property opened in March of 2015 and is receiving nothing but amazing reviews. Of course, we would expect nothing less from the team producing the most beautiful crystal in the world. The hotel has truly exceeded expectations and I was blown away by my entire experience. In the spirit of being perfectly honest, I was worried that the hotel would be over the top and on the verge of being a bit gaudy. I imagined-crystal flaked walls and pretentious staff, a place I would want to visit for the pure theme of it but not one that I would feel completely comfortable enjoying my vacation or corporate travel in. I could not have been more wrong. The entire hotel represents true luxury, finesse and precise attention to detail but there is nothing pretentious about it. Baccarat Hotel & Residences New York achieved an amazing feat in creating a lavish experience you are encouraged and, more importantly, welcomed, to enjoy. The entire hotel feels like a dream to me. Rich lush colors, the freshest red roses in every corner, the sparkle of subtle yet mesmerizing crystal, sleek guest rooms of polished marble and custom-made Mascioni jacquard linens. And speaking of fashion, my favorite aspect of this elegant piece of art disguised as a hotel is the design concept of the staff uniforms. From the hostess at the restaurant wearing a backless-knee length black satin cocktail dress, to the chic and modern version of a 1950’s retro dress at the front desk, to the doormen wearing amazingly stylish floor length wool coats and luscious leather gloves, staff members are dressed impeccably. What else could you ask for?

PARIS, FRANCE

Le Royal Monceau - Raffles Paris This hotel feels like a fairytale! Everything about it represents a whimsical and magical spirit among the hustle and bustle of Paris’s vibrant streets. After a long day of shopping, eating, and enjoying the sites, I love walking into this glamorous hotel lobby that exudes elegance and style but in a modern day version of Alice in Wonderland’s dream state. While the fashion and design of Philippe Starck isn’t the preferred style for everyone, Le Royal Monceau - Raffles Paris presents his favorite concept of mine. The colors are lighter and more romantic than some of his other properties; there are mirrors trimmed in ornate gold all over the hotel (and elevators) which give the illusion of even grander and more open spaces, and the open air kitchen of La Cuisine is incredibly enticing, as you can smell the chef’s master pieces as soon as you walk in. In addition to having a lovely amorous quality throughout the property, there is also an element of rock and roll with the art bookstore, a guitar in every room, a private movie theater, and the amazing contemporary art gallery on site. The public spaces throughout, including the indoor pool complete with a glass ceiling where guests in the garden can enjoy a glimpse of someone’s afternoon swim, are playful and alluring, while the décor in each room is relaxing and calm. The white linens and subtle touches of pink and violet are the perfect combination of beauty and grace within a hotel that already feels like a fantasy.

SAO PAOLO, BRAZIL Fasano Sao Paulo

Of course Sao Paulo is a fashion capital of the world, with its vibrant culture and style, but Fasano is where the best qualities of the city and Brazil’s fashion elite come together. The hotel itself is charming, simple, and elegant as the design includes natural resources from the area with its wood paneled walls, warm colors and fabrics, English brickwork façade inspired by 1930s architecture, and complete sense of place. As you arrive to Fasano, you immediately feel the escape from the rest of the city as you are transferred to an area with the best restaurants, shops, security, and upscale style. And you don’t even have to leave the hotel in order to experience the best that Sao Paulo has to offer! You are a guest of two bars (with a club feel) and roaring fireplaces as soon as you step foot into the hotel. The reception desk appears even secondary to making you feel right at home as soon as possible. You are a guest of an elite members only club rather than a hotel. The hotel itself is the local favorite for beautiful people, the best Italian restaurant in South America, and a perfect place for live music and surprise guests.
